Mark my words

To Dr. William R. Hite Jr.: I am a 67-year-old grandmother, and I would like to tell you a story about my trek through the School District of Philadelphia. Let me begin with I lost my one and only child at 24 due to injuries sustained from an auto accident. She left behind a son. So here I am a 54-year-old with a 3-year-old boy to raise, while I am trying to put myself back together over my loss. He was already in day care and from there he attended James Rhoads School. After second grade, I enrolled him in Samuel Powel School where he moved up from fourth grade to Middle Years Alternative (where he was introduced to football) until eighth grade. Now came the big decision, where to go to high school? I went to the high school fair, talking with educators, students, everybody. Finally, we decided on Edward W. Bok Technical High School, my grandson’s first choice. After an interview, we waited for an acceptance letter. Praise the Lord, he was accepted. On orientation day we met some teachers and were given a tour of all the shops that were available to students, at which time my grandson walked up to the football coach and introduced himself and informed the coach of his football experiences. The coach told him when they began practice and if he showed up, he would suit him up. After Mark walked away, the coach turned to me and said, “That’s what I like; he goes after what he wants. In Mark’s freshman year, he started out playing junior varsity and after a short while, that and varsity at the same time. He has a coach that is adamant about grades, and Mark’s have improved. I support him in every way I can. Yes, me, an old lady who always has disliked football, has her own custom-made team shirt, is the loudest one in the stands and has become a football grandmom who has not missed one game in three years. Mark and his education are my priorities. I have great support systems with his teachers, administration and his coach. There has been no problem they have not been able to help me solve. I am watching Mark ma-

ture into an impressive, young man. Don’t get me wrong, there is still work to be done, but with the right school and the right personnel helping me, it’s getting done. Bok’s staff cares, and that is hard to find. Now you are telling me I have to start all over again. Being a senior citizen, I don’t adjust to change really easily, and I have worked hard to be very visible at all his schools and nurture a relationship with the staff. When Mark heard of your decision to close Bok, he was devastated. This was the school of his choice, his first big decision, and now it’s closing with his having one more year to go. Of course, when he is hurting, so am I. My home is open to all of his friends, so I hear what they are thinking, and they are all floundering, confused, indecisive, worried. They are not looking forward to going to Southern nor am I. If you could just talk to some of them, you would know what this means to them. I realize you have a hard task in front of you, that you walked into a king-sized mess and now

you have to fix it, but isn’t there anything we, as parents, can do to keep Bok alive? Please give this matter further thought, and see if there is something else that can be done. Engrid R. Bullock West Philadelphia

Tired and disgusted To the Editor: I read the articles on the public school closings (Mapping the Future series, Jan. 17, 24 and 31). I definitely agree with [Superintendent William R.] Hite. People in Philly are protesting the closings. How many of these people are paying property and City wage taxes? Let them sacrifice like the Catholic school parents are doing. Stop living off the City, and get a job. No more excuses. I am a 78-year-old senior and have worked all of my life. I am tired of these freeloaders living off me. We owe you nothing —

Avoiding a cat-astrophe To the Editor: Bravo Kenneth Veith for your letter (“Humane act, Jan. 24). I couldn’t agree with you more. Poisoning cats is one of the most heinous acts of animal cruelty. To harm a living creature in this (or any) way is unfathomable. If it weren’t for irresponsible “pet owners putting their “cat(s) out because they no longer want them, we would not be dealing with the overpopulation of stray cats in the city. Your facts and information regarding the sequence of events following the cat’s ingestion of the poison are very important for pet owners. I would have never thought about a cat vomiting up poison in my yard only for my own dogs to potentially ingest it. So, now, I will be checking my yard prior to letting my dogs out. I have been doing volunteer work with various shelters throughout Philly and want to share that if anyone has a cat (or even a dog) that they no longer want or cannot care for, to take the cat to our city’s Animal Care and Control Team, 111 W. Hunting Park Ave., which is open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Call 267-385-3800, or visit acctphilly.org. To those poisoning the cats, killing the animals is not the proper resolution. Instead, please call Animal Care and Control Team if you feel there are too many cats in your area, or to help you trap the cats. Animal Care and Control Team also has low cost spay/neuter services for cats and dogs. Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society also has those services, as well as basic vet care and microchipping. Call 215-298-9680 or visit phillypaws.org. Thank you again, Mr. Veith, for your letter. I’m so happy to see that someone else is so concerned with the stray animals in our city. nvestigators identified Sophal Thach, 29, of the 700 block of Snyder Avenue, as the gunman in an attempted robbery in Southeast Philly last week. Authorities executed arrest and search warrants at Thach’s home at 6:30 a.m. Friday. At 10 a.m., authorities located and arrested him on the 1600 block of South 28th Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver said. Thach allegedly pulled out a small, silver revolver inside the store at the time of the incident, told everyone to get down and demanded money, Tolliver said. When a customer refused to cooperate, Thach is believed to have fired three shots, striking his target, a 48-year-old male, once in the left leg and again in the head at Koh Kong Grocery, 2233 S. Seventh St, at 5:50 p.m. Jan. 21 before fleeing with nothing. The victim was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in critical but stable condition, Tolliver said. He was charged with two counts of robbery, attempted theft, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person; one count of attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime; and various firearm violations, according to court records. His bail, which he had not posted by press time, was set at $750,000. Thach pled guilty to a 2003 robbery and criminal conspiracy for which he was sentenced to four to eight years in prison and an ’09 receiving stolen property charge for which he spent six to 23 months in prison and a year on probation, according to court records. Police are still seeking the man who stood as the lookout during the incident. He was described as Asian; having a stocky build and wearing a black hoodie. He fled northbound on Seventh after the shooting. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Subway surprise A Hawthorne man remains in jail on $2 million bail after robbing a woman and throwing her in the subway tracks in Center City. While waiting for the Broad Street Spur at Eighth and Race streets, a 23-year-old

sat on a bench beside William Clark, 36, whose last known address is on the 1300 block of Fitzwater Street, at 3:20 p.m. Jan. 15, according to police. Clark is believed to have asked her what time the train was coming and for a lighter. She handed him William Clark hers, which he later returned, Tolliber said. As she placed her lighter back in her coat, Clark allegedly grabbed her neck and punched her in the head a few times. The victim screamed she did not have anything, so Clark suppposedly grabbed her legs, dragged her to the end of the platform and tossed her into the tracks. He is believed to have picked up her phone, which fell out of her pocket, and fled. The victim suffered minor injuries to her head and face, police said. SEPTA police spotted Clark Jan. 17 and believed he matched the description of the offender wanted for the assault two days prior, according to police. He allegedly refused to cooperate and resisted arrest. He was wearing the same jacket as he did during the earlier robbery and also had the victim’s cell phone in his possession, police said. Clark was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records. He pled guilty to nine Center City robberies in 1996. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Cornering the market Police are seeking two men who are responsible for stealing a combined $1,000 from a Grays Ferry corner store and one of its employees. The robbing duo entered Wharton Food Market, 1300 S. 28th St., at 6:22 p.m. Jan. 17, according to police. The gunman pointed his weapon at one employee, demanding cash and taking his wallet, cell phone and $700 while his accomplice ordered cash from the register, which another employee who was working behind the counter provided by

A South of South deliveryman was robbed after dropping off food in West Passyunk Sunday. The 43-year-old male employee of Southside Pizza, 917 S. 20th St., completed a delivery on the 2000 block of South Norwood Street at 12:47 a.m. when he was held at gunpoint, Detective Danielle Tolliver said. The man armed with a silver revolver said, “Where’s the money at? Where’s the money at?” as the other offender punched the man in the back of his head and shoved him against a wall, so he could remove his wallet that contained credit cards, a Social Security card and $1,000, as well as his iPhone. The pair fled northbound on Norwood Street. The victim sustained minor scrapes to his hands, but did not seek medical treatment, Tolliver said. The offenders were described as black with a light complexion, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8, thin and wearing a black jacket. The gunman also was described as lacking facial hair. An argument led to an attempted carjacking Saturday night. A 20-year-old was driving his 2003 black Chevy Blazer with two friends, a 17- and 18-year-old male, in tow on the 700 block of Porter Street at 1:40 a.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver said. About nine male teens — one of which was armed with an ice scraper — and a female teen surrounded his car and asked if they were with Matt and Donte. Those in the car exited, and a verbal dispute ensued, but it soon turned physical, Tolliver said. The auto’s driver was knocked to the ground and heard his car door close. After getting backup, he saw one of the offenders in his seat, so he opened the door and sat on his lap and put his foot on the brake while the offender was pressing the gas. The car headed east on Porter for less than a block before it struck two parked cars and a street sign, Tolliver said. Both a 2008 block Mercedes Benz and 2003 white Dodge van received minor damages. The offenders fled in unknown directions, Tolliver said. No injuries were reported. Not all of the offenders’ descriptions were available at press time. One of the male teens was described as white, 5-foot-6 and blond, while another was described as black, age 18, 6-foot-1, heavy and having no facial hair. Colonial times Local cat lovers have devoted years to helping feral and stray felines within a Pennsport shopping district. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

A

s she bonded with three cats and waited for two more to complete her customary quintet Tuesday, Diana D’Ambrosio made her affection apparent. “I love these animals,” the resident of the 1300 block of McKean Street said as she prepared food for the trio. “They are my children.” The East Passyunk Crossing dweller has visited the felines for two years, nourishing them and tending to their space adjacent to the parking lot at Walmart, 1675 S. Columbus Blvd. The beneficiaries constitute only a fraction of the feral and stray specimens whom she and her peers have assisted over the last four decades, with strategies to improve the colony members’ lives through key partnerships as their top tactics. D’Ambrosio’s proxy progenies competed with seagulls as they consumed their late-morning meal at one of the 10 feeding stations that sate as many as 175 cats. With delighted bellies, they headed for a fenced area to rest by the Delaware River, the body of water responsible for their nickname, the River Kitty Cats. “The colony began in the late 1980s, I believe, so this area, which is undoubtedly the most populous local one for the animals, is now in its fourth decade of being a haven for them” Teresa Reed said at the main nutritional stop, where as many as 45 cats, representing the largest subsection, dine. “It started with people just dumping them here and not caring about the consequences.” With roughly 10 years of commitment to the Pennsport post, the inhabitant of the 400 block of Durfor Street laments the disregard so many have had for the felines, whose descendants are classified as feral because of their in-the-wild births. The Humane Society of the United States estimates the nation’s feral and stray cat population at 50 million, and since pregnancies can occur when females are as young as 5 months old, Reed and their allies have become disciples of the Trap-Neuter-Return philosophy on population control. They have benefited the last two years from free-roaming cat spay/neuter grants through PetSmart Charities, endowments that have permitted them to aid as many as 700 meowing acquaintances each year.

Elly Scoblink and others have given their time and money to help the Pier 70 cats. S TA F F P H O T O S B Y G R E G B E Z A N I S As Philadelphia might have as many as 300,000 feral and stray critters, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the allocations and an affiliation with the Pennsylvania chapter’s spay and neuter clinic, dubbed “The Club,” have meant the assistants have had to welcome few new faces. The established colonists and the recent arrivals whom they have brought for procedures also have received rabies vaccinations and ear-tippings, which involve the snipping of a quarter inch of their left ear. That practice has become the universallyrecognized sign indicating trap-neuter-return status and separates veterans from the new residents. “We all know our colonies,” Reed, whose nightly ventures allow her to develop the clowder’s trust, said as a half a dozen denizens responded to her popping open a wet food can. “We all look out for their welfare and see that they suffer no harm.” THE WHITMAN FIGURE acts as the main trapper for the Pier 70 populace and noted that new dropoffs usually dominate the ranks of those who are adoptable because

of their recent roles as atdomesticated companions. anions. She typically cally holds such cats for two weeks while seeking abodes for them and commends her close friend Elly Scoblink for falling hard for two former colony occupants. “These are beautiful creatures,” the resident of the 100 block of Tasker Street said as she and her Rottweiler/Doberman mix prepared to play with the assembled bunch. “We all enjoy caring for them despite whatever opposition we receive.” The Pennsport personality recently became a trapper. With nine years of treks to the shopping center area, which she said used to attract dog packs, she has noticed some people still object to the animals’ presence, but she and Reed, who claim that Walmart once had a role in the disappearance of two cats, do not have to count the business giant as a foe. “I don’t know anything about past interactions between management and the handlers,” store manager Frank Pellicori said.

“I’ve been here since 2011, and we’ve had no problems. We’ve let them do what they need to do to tend to the cats.” That often has involved cleaning massive amounts of debris from passers-by, with the rubbish giving Reed even more cause to be a diligent attendant. “Trash complicates matters, as life at this end of the colony is the harshest because of the proximity to the temperatures from the Delaware River,” she said. “Many of the cats have frozen to death, and that has meant our needing to bury them.” While many of the colony constituents eagerly fraternized with D’Ambrosio, Reed and Scoblink, others secluded themselves themselv in heavily foliaged areas, focusing fo more on sleep than interaction. inte Reed, who hopes to land a third grant from the pet p store’s altruistic arm, maintains data on the cats and has observed that upper respiratory tract infections head the small list of afflictions from which they suffer and that because of o spaying and neutering, few fe males have wounds one might mig expect from competing for mates. m “We have a very manageable system here, here but there is still a bit of trapping i to ddo,”” Reed said. “This area and Whitman, where I oversee another colony, has fluctuating numbers, so everyone is striving to gain control over how many cats we care for and what kind of comfort we can provide for them.” She and her fellow enthusiasts have memberships to surplus stores and often receive donations from supporters who likewise want the River Kitty Cats, with names such as Speckles and Silvia, to thrive. “They are such good cats,” D’Ambrosio, who always brings her cats a chicken once a week, said as the seagulls, whom Reed also aids, finally flew away and let the little ones eat, said. “Winter is a tough time for them,” Reed added. “We’re hoping for a little extra help to get them through it.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. SMITH

continued from page 1 serves on its advisory council. “These children are spirit beings,” the activist said of its 402 enrollees. “They have feelings, too, but it doesn’t seem to matter to the district if they suffer spiritually.” Beaufort has aligned herself with other crusaders to launch a petition and has distributed information at Garnet and Wharton streets as a safe corridor program volunteer, all to keep the young minds from having to say farewell to Smith come June and hello to figures from Chester A. Arthur, 2200 Catharine St.; George W. Childs, 1599 Wharton St.; and Edwin Stanton, 1700 Christian St., schools in September. She planned to speak at Tuesday’s Facilities Master Plan community session at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., where she hoped to learn why Smith’s pupils could need to venture out of Point Breeze. “Nobody has heard a thing, but, aside from that, what’s disgraceful is the district’s advocating for the further decline of our community,” she said. Gladly recalling better days, Beaufort knows Smith has declined, registering a “10,” the worst possible score, on the School Performance Index in 2011, the last year for which data is available, and meeting only six of its 24 Pennsylvania System of School Assessment targets that same year, but would not speculate on the causes for its inclusion on the list, which the School Reform Commission will address and likely vote on in March. Hite compiled it with assistance from the Boston Consulting Group to respond to a 27 percent enrollment plunge since 2002; 53,000 empty seats; $300 million borrowed to cover this year’s expenses; and to elevate the districtwide capacity rate from 67 to 80 percent. Along with the closings, the first-year head is proposing grade changes, mergers and program co-locations in what would amount to the largest-ever constriction for the nation’s eighth-largest school district. His suggestions include shuttering Abigail Vare School, 1621 E. Moyamensing Ave., and relocating learners to George Washington School, 1198 S. Fifth St., whose program options would end, and halting operations at Edward Bok Technical High School, 1901 S. Ninth St., with Southern as a replacement. The moves, which Beaufort says are rooted in greed, could save Hite’s employer $28 million beginning in ’14-’15 but would rob Smith’s youths of their enriching times at their present spot, Sterling Rideout said. “I hate to say it, but I think it’s a done deal,” the resident of 16th and Tasker streets said at Friday’s dismissal as he re-

trieved nephew Devon Hudson, a thriving fourth-grader. “There’s too much money to be had, so I think it’s going to be sold and converted into condos.” RIDEOUT’S KIN AND the boy’s peers received letters announcing the possible desistance and details on Newbold’s Childs and South of South’s Arthur and Stanton. Parents must select their most desired school option, with the letter coming to serve as an application the district will address on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the master plan. When an institution becomes full, the Office of Student Enroll-

ment and Placement will assign learners to their families’ next choice, with another correspondence to announce their new destinations coming by April 1. For Devon, finding a different educational haunt would not represent an example of novelty. “Yes, I’ve been through this before,” the 9-year-old said. “Just because I’m used to it doesn’t mean I want to do it again though.” The precocious youngster began his elementary career at Childs, then 1541 S. 17th St., but its advanced age of 116 years led the district to close it in ’10 and send registrants to the current address at the former Norris

S. Barratt Middle School. Devon became a Smith student, with twin sister Dajoir landing at the current Childs site. If Smith were to shutter, Devon would reunite with his relative, but he knows that gain would come as the result of a huge loss. “My teachers and Ms. [Rachel] Marianno encourage me to work very hard,” he said of his instructors and their fourth-year principal, who elected not to comment. “I really feel they are making a difference in my life and for my schoolmates.” “We need for everyone at Smith to be a voice for our future,” Beaufort, who led a prayer vigil adjacent to the school Jan. 14 and will participate in an onsite meeting with district personnel Feb. 8, added. “We can again be vibrant and overcome leadership flaws to make it back to where we once were, to being an outstanding academic facility.” With a 14-2 vote, City Council backed 3rd District Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell’s call for a one-year moratorium on school closings Jan. 24, and Beaufort hopes that the legislative body’s decision will resonate with the five-member commission. “I keep reading about problems, gang stuff mostly, that people in North and West Philly are saying will make some moves dangerous,” Rideout said. “I don’t know what sort of stuff might go down if Smith’s kids have to relocate, but I do know everyone in that building is a hard worker.” “These children have enough on their minds,” Beaufort said of their non-school circumstances. “They shouldn’t be treated as if their future doesn’t matter. Nobody should have to struggle to get a good education.” SPR

What a trip A Marconi resident appeared on a game show for a chance at $1 million and a Disney cruise. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder

Review Managing Editor

arah Donaldson had returned to her hometown last year after living and working in Los Angeles for about four years, and heard about an open call for a show she often viewed with her parents, Jim and Antoinette. “I was watching Rachael Ray as I was applying for jobs, and there was some teaser for [an open call for ‘Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?’] here in Philly and [directed those interested to] look at the 6ABC Facebook page,” Donaldson, 31, said. “I knew right away, ‘what the heck? I’ll go down. It’ll get me out of the monotony of applying for jobs.’” The resident of 18th Street and Oregon Avenue appeared on “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” Oct. 18 in an episode that aired Jan. 9. While she didn’t walk away with the grand prize, she won $1,000 and a dream Disney cruise. Her mother, along with an estimated 1,500 others, joined her in her pursuit to be cast for the show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center Oct. 11. She passed the 10-minute, 30-question, multiple-choice trivia test, and producers interviewed her and informed her she may receive a call the next week. “I said ‘Call away,’” Donaldson, who currently is unemployed, said. “I was completely shocked and floored.” Four days later, she received that call, asking her to come to New York City Oct. 17. Upon arriving on set, she saw a promo for a Disney cruise. “I started going ballistic,” she said of a dance she started doing that included steam boat noises and her saying “Mickey.” “‘This is awesome. We get to play for a cruise, too?’” Although she didn’t play that day, she was called back the next day for the “Cruise In and Win Week” taping, during which each

LIFESTYLES contestant had the Disney prize attached to a random question. “I can’t believe that this isn’t even a week since I went on the audition,” Donaldson said of her mindset on the show. “This is the craziest experience I’ve had in my life.” She either knew or was able to deduct correctly by a process of elimination on her first few questions. With the first 10 price points shuffled, she reached her $25,000 prize on question No. 3, which was followed by her cruise question. Correctly answering questions related to Wicca and Sonia Sotomayor, respectively, she had accumulated $31,000 and the cruise. “To me, getting the cruise was more than the money,” Donaldson, who plans to take her parents and her boyfriend, whom she met four days after her win, on her vacation aboard the Disney Fantasy, which will stop in the Cayman Islands, Mexico and the Bahamas’ Castaway Cay in May. Donaldson’s fifth question asked “What potentially injurious wardrobe item” Katy Perry was prohibited from wearing on stage. Instead of spinning peppermint bra, she guessed flame-shooting thong, basing her hunch on the song, “Firework,” and her having seen Perry in concert wearing the bra. Her incorrect assumption dropped

her cash winnings to $1,000. “I’m not a gambling type at all, so I don’t know what came over me,” she said. “Those lights are blaring on you, there’s an audience, they’re waiting for an answer — it’s nerve-racking.” THE SOUTH PHILLY native’s craving for the spotlight started when she appeared in school productions at the now-closed Trinity Christian School, 2300 S. 18th St., where her mother taught pre-kindergarten. “I was always the Christmas tree or the ringleader in the circus play, so when I was 3, I was already doing shows,” Donaldson, who continued to perform in various school plays, including those at her alma mater, Montgomery County’s Merion Mercy Academy, said. After attending Washington, D.C.’s The Catholic University of America, where she graduated in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in musical theater, she performed “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” in Philly and Atlantic City, N.J., and often traveled to New York City for auditions, being cast as Jan for a yearlong North American “Grease” tour in ’03. “That was the most exciting thing I’ve ever done career-wise, and I got to perform with other South Philly natives, Frankie Avalon

“The more I kept going up, I said, ‘No, my heart’s here in Philly, and I really want to kind of parlay my skills and maybe it’s not in entertainment anymore. I wish it would be. I’m trying to find something in entertainment.” Regardless of whether she was struggling or succeeding, her parents have been there for her and her younger brother, Stephen. “They never really said, ‘no,’” she said. “It wasn’t that they were pushovers, but they were believers and had such a great faith in me succeeding.” That’s why she had hoped to win big on “Millionaire.” “For me, it wasn’t as much as having money for myself at the end of the day, but being able to give money back to them,” Donaldson said. However, while on set, her mother pushed producers to put her on the show, too and succeeded, with her episode tentatively set to air next month. “God, how much money we were playing with — it’s just an opportunity of lifetime,” Donaldson, who couldn’t disclose how her mom fared, said of the motherdaughter duo having played for a combined $2 million. and Chubby Checker,” Donaldson said. During one show, she learned Avalon had left an Italian roll and broccoli rabe in her dressing room. He had assumed a South Philly girl would appreciate the classic dish, but she had never tasted it before. “From that day on I’ve started eating broccoli rabe, and I credit it to Frankie Avalon,” she said. “Every time I have it I think of him.” She also has appeared as extras in a variety of films, including “Rocky Balboa” and “Invincible,” and as a dancer in Cascada’s “Everytime We Touch” music video. Since then, she has switched career paths, working for Harrah’s (now Caesars) Entertainment in Atlantic City, N.J. as a coordinator, booking acts like Jay Leno and Tony Bennett, as well as her favorite singer, Sheryl Crow, and handling prize distributions on shows, like “The Price Is Right.” “I made sure someone got their car and TV,” she said. “It was nice to give out a prize for a game show because I always wanted to play.” In ’08, she worked for various L.A. talent agencies that represented celebrities like Tom Arnold and Aretha Franklin and on TV shows, such as “True Jackson, VP” and “90210,” before heading home to begin treks to New York again.

Shorts in contention By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

oviegoers get special treats this weekend as the year’s Oscar-nominated shorts, oft-unseen by those outside the ballot-casting Academy, are released in theaters for a brief run. The animation bunch is particularly rich with amusing choices. The first is “Paperman,” which some viewers might remember from its debut as the opening act of “Wreck-It Ralph” earlier this year. A modest, nostalgic charmer stylistically reminiscent of last year’s “The Artist,” the black-and-white Disney production follows an office drone as he tries to woo a pretty stranger, whom he stumbles across in a meet-cute on a train platform. Paper planes serve as his Cupid’s arrows, and the short’s wordless charm, however frivolous, is largely irresistible. There also is “Fresh Guacamole,” a very brief but nonetheless memorable concoction of offbeat creativity, with Claymation bringing to life history’s strangest dip preparation, with ingredients as diverse as lightbulbs, baseballs and hand grenades. It’s as strangesounding as it is perfectly rendered. Also in the mix is “Maggie Simpson: The Longest Daycare,” which indeed stars the youngest of Matt Groening’s original modern family. Subjected to an absurdly oppressive day in a kiddie center named after Ayn Rand, Maggie fights to save a helpless insect from a mallet-wielding bully, and the results, though quickly forgettable, are sweet without losing any trademark “Simpsons” subversion. “Adam and Dog” is a surprisingly profound and comparatively lengthy entry, set in the Garden of Eden and essentially telling the first boy-and-his-dog tale. Adam encounters the unnamed pooch in the wild

brush of the forest, one of many beautifully realized, traditionally animated environments. Their bond grows, gets interrupted by Eve’s arrival, then takes a surprising turn that brings faith itself into question. The art is uneven, but the material is provocative. Finally, there’s “Head Over Heels,” an “Up”-meets-“Amour” flick about an elderly couple in a floating house who’ve grown to have gravitational pulls that are literally at odds. With the right blend of sentiment and whimsy, it’s the short to beat on the big night.

Oscar Nominated Short Films 2013: Animated NR Three reels out of four Opens Friday at the Ritz at the Bourse

Recommended Rental Flight R Available Tuesday

Denzel Washington is at his compelling best in the ever-evolving “Flight,” a disaster flick that becomes a legal drama that settles into a character study. Centering on an alcoholic pilot (Washington) whose astonishing act of heroism hasn’t placed him above suspicion, the film is a complex triumph as a studiobacked picture, its dramatic focus something oft-reserved for shoestring indies. One of 2012’s best. SPR Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-entertainment/movies.

restaurant again, one that doesn’t think that Metallica sets the right romantic mood. I’d like to see the end of reality shows that have no relationship to reality. I’d like a moderate Republican to get elected anywhere, just for the novelty of it. I’d like to see the return of mainstream films with the glamour of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the wit and sophistication of Myrna Loy and William Powell, and the impact of “On the Waterfront.” Enough with the superheroes. I’d like to see an art museum where poor folks can afford the admission. I’d like to see a Center City free of panhandlers and the truly needy given a safe place to be fed and housed. I’d like to see Charlie Manuel and the Phillies get one more ride down Broad Street. I’d like to see a future where newspapers and books are valued. I’d like to see the Kardashians treated with indifference. I’d like to see folks around here shop in Philadelphia and help our economy rather than cross the bridge into South Jersey. I’d like Philadelphia to be known more for the Super Bowl than the Wing Bowl. I’d like gun collectors to be more concerned about senseless school massacres than tougher background checks. I’d like bartenders to refuse to serve Lindsay Lohan. I’d like to see a day when the entire tip I leave at a bar or restaurant actually goes to the server. I’d like us to be less impressed by celebrity and more impressed by good works. I’d like to see a time when the terms “victim” and “hero” are not used interchangeably. I’d like to live in a world where there is always Tony Bennett. I’d like jazz musicians to start playing for the audience again instead of just themselves. I’d like pedophiles to be reported and treated, not protected by big, self-important institutions. I’d like to go to a beach in Cancun where someone doesn’t try to sell me a silver bracelet. I’d like to travel back in time to see a Bob Marley concert in person. I’d like to eat in a restaurant where the only choices are not “small plates” and “very small plates.” I’d like to sing “Thunder Road” with The Boss. I’d like to finish my life without another assassination of someone I love and admire. I’d like to be transformed from a bumbler with two left feet into Fred Astaire if just for one dance. SPR

t is common practice these days for folks to have a bucket list. Personally, I never heard of the term until Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman made a movie called “The Bucket List,” which I have managed to avoid watching. I don’t like the whole idea of making one. At my age, my bucket list consists of — I want to wake up each morning and be able to pee. Think about it. If I can’t do either, it doesn’t matter what the rest of the day will be like. Would any of my family or friends believe me if I claimed my life would be incomplete if I never get to ride a yak while visiting Tibet? I don’t think so. But frankly, I am feeling the pressure to come up with a bucket list if only for the sake of conversation. In order to get everyone off my back, here is my bucket list (not necessarily in order of preference). I’d like to see Joe Banner smile, just once, just not at our expense. I’d like Alicia Keys to sing “Girl on Fire” to me, even if I don’t have the right credit card. I’d like a woman to be elected president or governor of this state or mayor of this city, or better yet, all three. I’d like to see a movie set in Philadelphia without one mention of a cheesesteak. I’d like a statue of Joe Frazier, a real Philadelphia boxing great, to replace the statue of Rocky Balboa, who only exists in the movies and in the mind of Sylvester Stallone. I’d like to see the end of social media and texting and for people to begin speaking and writing in full sentences again. I’d like to hear someone address Ed Snider without the “Mr.” I’d like to see a holiday without a war. I’d like to hear a rap artist who can move me like Otis Redding. I’d like to see the Kimmel Center book a pop artist whom I care about. I’d like to see a brightly lit and clean City Hall. I’d like to see the end of the skinless hot dog. Bring back the snap and pop. I’d like Philadelphians to appreciate the beauty and history of their city in the same way as tourists do. I’d like to celebrate a hero who hasn’t cheated or lied. I’d like to see audiences come back to the Philadelphia Orchestra and Philly Pops concerts. I’d like to experience a quiet and classy

Big-game planning With Super Bowl XLVIl just days away, it’s time to finalize the viewing plans.

T

he first weekend in February is just about here and the Philadelphia Eagles are once again not part of the conversation. But Sunday’s matchup will include plenty of brotherly love as John Harbaugh and his Baltimore Ravens take on younger sibling Jim Harbaugh and his San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. Whether rooting for a favorite Harbaugh or team, Super Bowl Sunday is all about bonding with family and friends. Some fans may watch to rate the night’s best commercials. Another big decision is figuring out where to watch the game. Local establishments are gearing up to serve a packed house of hungry and thirsty patrons. The guide below provides a small sampling of options. Contact the restaurants about any specials being offered Sunday. For those hosting a Super Bowl party, this week’s Big Game special section will hopefully make the take-out or delivery decisions a little easier. Adobe Café: 1919 E. Get More Value out of Your GaMe DaY PartY (Family Features) No matter what your favorite sport is, when you host the watch party you need to be on your A-game. But, like many people, you don’t want to break the bank on food to entertain. In fact, according to a national survey by DiGiorno® Pizza, 90 percent of people look for deals to get more value when making food purchases.

1925 S. Broad Street • Phila PA 19145 (215)271-6840 • www.pestopizzeria.com Gift Certificates Available Eat in • Take out • Delivery • Catering

Here are a few tips for hosting a winning game day party on a budget:

SUPER SUNDAY SPECIALS

Go Big – Grab some savings when you buy in bulk. Look for party-sized packages of your favorite chips, dips, pretzels and nuts. You can stock up on bulk beverages and desserts, too – saving you time and money.

20

Count on Teamwork – Have each of your guests bring a favorite snack or dish to share with everyone. To make sure you don’t have too many of the same dishes, assign different categories to people – one to bring chili, another to bring chips and dip, etc. For those that don’t cook, let them bring drinks, ice or paper goods.

DIY to Save – Deli and veggie trays from the grocery store can be expensive. You can make your own and save more money. Choose a variety of items you know your guests will eat. You can wash and cut produce a day or two before the party and just store them in the fridge until party time.

It’s easier than you think to host a game-day party that doesn’t cost a fortune. A little planning and some smart shopping means you can enjoy the big game and all the delicious fun that goes with it. Don’t Trash It – When you skip disposable plates, utensils and cups, you not only save money, but you also cut down on the amount of trash you have to deal with when the party’s over. Use the dishes you have, even if they don’t match. If you’re having a large party and don’t have enough dishes, borrow some from friends.

15

Keep it Simple – Pizza is always a game-time favorite – but ordering carryout or delivery pizza can get pricey and time-consuming. According to the same national survey, nearly two-thirds of consumers (65 percent) prefer the convenience and quick-preparedness of frozen foods versus ordering out or having food delivered. You can often get more pizza for your money with frozen pizzas such as DiGiorno and their new “Law of Pizzaplicity” which states that you can get two DiGiorno12-inch Rising Crust pizzas for the price of one delivery pizza.1 A deal like this can save you time and money for your next game-day party. ace it, finding a good plate of pasta in these parts is not very challenging. South Ninth Street alone presents several delicious dinning destinations. But when the wallet starts feeling a little lighter, splurging for a fine Italian meal no longer seems like such a good idea. For those keeping a close eye on the budget, Debbie Robb, of the 300 block of Mercy Street, offers up a cheaper solution with her Yummy Pasta recipe. With artichoke hearts, spinach and tomatoes in the mix, this meal also will satisfy those appetites running on empty. SPR

INGREDIENTS: 1 box of bow pasta, cooked according to package directions 2 tablespoons of olive oil 1 can of artichoke hearts (in water) 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 small onion, chopped 1 teaspoon of red crushed pepper flakes 1 29-ounce can of diced tomatoes

Chefs will feature threecourse, prix-fixe lunches and/or dinners for $15 to $35. “We are so excited to launch our first-ever East Passyunk Restaurant Week and showcase the amazing talent that makes our dining scene so unique,” Renee Gilinger, East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District executive director, said. and tasteless, but when prepared properly, it’s one of my favorite vegetables. Cool roasted beets mixed with herbs and generous chunks of tangy feta cheese was another tasty side dish. Beet salads have been the rage in so many places for years but this simple and flavorful preparation brought smiles. Casual and moderately-priced places like Rotisseur, where one can either dine in or take out, are popping up throughout the city. Barbecue blazed the trail after burger joints made their deep imprint. But fast food need not be loaded with calories and fat. Rotisseur demonstrated this on every level. = Very Good

cheese, set it next to the roasted potato wedges, and I immediately got big eyes. I wanted to try everything. The clerk told me two sides come with the whole chicken dinner ($26). I also wanted to take home a sample of contrasting cool vegetables as well. While I was making my choices, a couple arrived and asked for a vegetarian banh mi to go. If you are not in the mood for a meal, a chicken sandwich or any type of banh mi is available. I brought home our goodies and set the table. Rotisseur roasts local, organic birds, which is a plus with me. The meat was moist, tasty and juicy. Sometimes breast meat can be dry and bland, but our bird was evenly roasted, resulting in a comforting experience. Since the chickens roast on a spit, much of the fat falls off. It’s a healthy way to cook. The six grilled baby bok choy were a fine foil with dinner, especially when we dipped them into a rich, deep garlic sauce that the clerk included as a sample. The people at Rotisseur come up with new sauces and like their patrons to sample them before they appear on the menu. Pickled vegetables have gained in popularity within the past year or so, but many cooks just can’t seem to strike the right balance of slightly sweet and pungent. The pickled vegetables hit the mark. The container was filled with shredded cabbage, onions, marvelous carrots that retained a bit of crunch, beets and okra. Okra can be tricky. Some folks say it is slimy

n my youth, our stove had a separate rotisserie compartment where my mom would roast whole chickens or roast beef for Friday night dinners. Some people owned free-standing countertop rotisseries that took up a lot of space, but produced juicy, succulent birds. For years, supermarkets have offered whole roasted chickens for easy meals. All one needed to prepare were the side dishes, and dinner was ready in about 30 minutes. About a year-and-a-half ago, Rotisseur, a BYOB on South 21st Street, opened for business. I walked by it a number of times and made a mental note to sample its chicken dinners and freshly-prepared side dishes. Last week, I decided it was the perfect time to try Rotisseur’s fare. I cooked all week, simmering a big pot of chicken soup, braising some short ribs, grilling salmon with root vegetables and brewingendless cups of tea. I simply could not face the stove until the next day. Rotisseur is a small, brightly-lit place with about a dozen seats, but it also offers takeout. Patrons simply order from the chalkboard, and the meal is ready in minutes. A delightful clerk described all the offerings as I glanced at the chickens roasting on spits. For $33, Edward and I enjoyed a simple, tasty, comforting dinner. Unfortunately for us, Rotisseur was out of cornbread, but the array of fresh vegetables on the mise en place table was enticing. A black, cast-iron skillet held baked beans, and another was filled with braised then grilled baby bok choy. The owner pulled out a pan of macaroni and

Will BYOB’s Parsnip Veloute

Chef Christopher Kearse

Will BYOB Owner/Chef: Christopher Kearse Opened Aug. 24, 2012 1911 E. Passyunk Ave. 215-271-7683 willbyob.com

“You learn a lot over the 10 years — you kind of want to take that experience and do your own thing,” Kearse said Friday. His friend, whom he met while working at LaCroix, chef Lee Styer of Fond, 1537 S. 11th St., told him about the then-vacant spot. “The location, the area, this landlord, [Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corp.],” he said of factors that resulted in his decision to open a South Philly restaurant. “I used to work at a small, 30-seat restaurant. It kind of was a nobrainer, natural progression.” His recipes also have a progression until each is just right. When it came to his Parsnip Veloute creation, which will be featured on his Valentine’s Day menu, he focused on the vegetable, working on the rest of the ingredients until he found the right mix of flavors. “Taste it and taste it and taste it, and analyze,” the Fifth and Morris streets resident said of the process.

But to taste his version, one must make reservations quickly as Kearse alters the menu frequently. However, he also has revealed his recipe for those who want to try their hand at the winter soup. SPR

Aunt Lee worked as a bookkeeper for the U.S. Marine Corps, was active with St. Edmond’s Church all her life, and contributed to many charities. She took her nieces and nephews to Philadelphia Orchestra concerts and lunches at the Crystal Room, and made possible more than one summer vacation in Wildwood. Lee liked traveling, making birthday cards and Christmas wreaths, cooking extra-healthy meals and baking biscotti. She cared for both parents in their home through each of their illnesses, until their deaths. She soldiered through a bout of breast cancer and lived a long, healthy life until Alzheimer’s Disease slowed her down in her 70s.

Birthday presence Despite a loss on its coach’s big day, a Lower Moyamensing basketball team is celebrating newfound confidence. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

A

s Ralik Wise joined his teammates at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., in presenting coach Doreen Coleman with a pre-game birthday cake Jan. 24, he surely believed a victory against Simon Gratz High School would complement the sweet offering. Despite receiving 25 points and 22 rebounds from the senior center, the Rams fell 64-61 to the Bulldogs in a riveting Division B Public League basketball battle. Even with the home loss, the Lower Moyamensing-based athletes still gave their firstyear instructor a much appreciated second gift, a solid display of determination. “This is a wonderful group of young men,” Coleman said as she dished out post-contest slices to her ballers. “They’re hardworking, energetic and, based on this little treat, considerate.” The Wynnefield resident came to Southern after the School District of Philadelphia folded her program at Horace Furness High School, 1900 S. Third St., where she oversaw 10 junior varsity and three varsity units, and still serves as the girls’ volleyball coach and works as the dean of students. A district agreement allows the Pennsport site’s enrollees to play for Southern, which, coming off a 4-16 season, needed as many consistent contributors as it could find. Along with the transfer of Wise from Upper Darby High School, the combination has proven profitable, as the hosts entered last week’s affair with an 11-6 record, including a 6-3 mark against divisional foes. “I want constant movement a n d t e n a c i t y,” Coleman said to her senior-heavy bunch, which is seeking Southern’s first winning campaign in four years. “Keep your focus.” With eight

championships since 1990, Gratz has built a remarkable reputation yet slumped to a 3-15 record last year and entered the duel with seven losses in its previous eight games. That streak mattered little in the first quarter as an 11-0 sprint erased an early deficit and had the Rams wisely feeding Wise for interior scores. The resident of the 2200 block of Hemberger Street tallied 10 points, including two buckets that showed off his 6-foot-4 frame’s flexibility. With her charges down 17-16 after the first eight minutes, Coleman, though realizing Wise had the hot hand, hoped other roster members would provide offensive variety. Senior forward Wayne Brunson, who in the fall rushed for 1,207 yards, proved his talent extends beyond football fields by leading the Rams with five second-quarter points. With improved defensive stands, notably two blocked shots from Wise, the home team engineered a 33-26 edge at intermission. WISE, WHO ALSO suited up for the Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Charter School Warriors, transferred to Southern for family reasons. Coming from Upper Darby, which

he said ran a more set style of play as opposed to his current unit’s fancy for runand-gun schemes, he has enjoyed aiding the Rams’ fast-paced, often jaw-dropping mentality. “The guys have really embraced me,” the big man, whose effort pushed his scoring average in divisional games to 15.2, said. “I want to repay them by helping us to city and state championship appearances.” Gratz began the second half by letting Wise’s band know it will need to show more discipline if it wants to be a postseason noisemaker, as the visitors made second attempts and deadly perimeter shooting force Coleman and assistant coach George Anderson to rant about maintaining aggressive defensive attitudes. Numerous foul calls had their players crying foul and seemed to stymie their energy, which they used more to complain than to compete. “Let our play do the talking,” assistant coach Arthur Russell said of the loose whistles. Brunson responded to the instruction with seven points, and Wise added three, but the guests decided to be impolite and barked their way to a 47-45 advantage as the final quarter commenced. “Defense will get

PRO SPORTS at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php you back in it,” Anderson, the Rams’ former head helper, said. Wise listened intently and used his athleticism to pressure shooters and run back for dishes from senior Robert Leonard, who, in addition to handing out six assists, entered Southern’s annals Dec. 28 when his waning-seconds layup gave Southern the title in the Black Knights Tournament against Landisville’s Hempfield High School. Nearly a foot shorter than his lauded teammate, the point guard revealed he has as much heart, as he tried to will the Rams to victory. Not a huge scorer, Leonard stroked a key three-pointer, and Wise added eight points, but wayward heaves by the latter and Brunson in the final moments resulted in dejected looks and consoling handshakes from the Bulldogs. “We beat ourselves with turnovers,” Wise, still pondering where he will take his talent upon graduation, said of 16 miscues. “We’ll clean up our game going forward, though.” Though her youngsters could not come through, Coleman enjoyed the effort and capped her special occasion by dining with her family. She hopes her Rams will batter the Franklin Learning Center Bobcats today in the regular-season finale. “I have the greatest coaching staff any woman or man could ask for and players who care,” she said. “We’ll be ready for anyone.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Rams’ seniors Tyreese Livingston, from left, Ralik Wise and Wayne Brunson will shoot for their school’s 12th win in this afternoon’s regular-season finale, with their postseason fate partially resting on the result. S ta f f P h o t o b y Greg Bezanis
