Questioning the standards

To the Editor: Tom Cardella missed the real issue entirely in his recent column on women in combat and related job achievements (“More than the fair sex,� Feb. 7). Men are not sour sports, despite a dishonest media continually slanting gender stories. What many ask is that women who get a job be held to the same standard as the men. Nothing less. This is not sour grapes. Women entering previously male-only fields are often allowed lower standards for the same job — a fact Mr. Cardella leaves out. This often requires extra labor from male coworkers (for the same wage by the way), and puts all the workers at risk. If a woman in a battle unit need only carry a smaller weight or run a slower mile, do you think the enemy will give her the same break — in combat? But you can bet men will die protecting her. We went through this shell game in firefighter units when the liberals screamed that it was unfair to make women carry a 150-pound sack down a ladder as a job prerequisite — as many failed the test that men passed easily. In many jobs, appropriate standards have been discarded for political correctness, even putting the public at risk. I’ll ask Mr. Cardella, if he’s up on the third floor dying from smoke inhalation, does he want to be greeted by the 100-pound female firefighter, who couldn’t pass the old test, to carry him down to safety?

Some of the seniors moved to South Philadelphia Older Adult Center, 1430 E. Passyunk Ave. While the staff there has done an outstanding job in taking in many of these citizens, there is not enough room for all. [Caring People Alliance, which ran the Marconi Older Adult Center at Fels, is renting the former St. Monica’s day care building, 2433 S. 15th St.] It has been eight months and it still has not been opened. There has been no coverage in the Review. All the former members have heard are rumors. My question, and that of many others, is when will it open and what stage of completion it is in? I respectfully request on behalf of the seniors that the Review look into this and find out where are our South Philly politicos who should be moving this along. We ask for your immediate attention to this problem and we would like to hear from our politicians on expediting this opening. Joseph Cirella South Philadelphia

Lauding Landreth To the Editor: It was hot that day as I recall. The guys were gathering to play some ball. I was proud to be a part of it all. It was really our thing. Passion for the game is all you had to bring. Watching great moves on the court all the time, Refunding soda bottles for a nickle or a dime, This was a part of it all and it wasn’t a crime. There were lessons to be learned on the court that day. Older guys helped you in a mentoring way. Scoring points and looking your best Wanting to be better than the rest. Guys wore Converse and Pro-Keds, Maybe a headband on their heads. Landreth schoolyard was for me. It gave me character and a sense of purpose you see.

The kind of education to make me stay, Good players schooled me I must say. Some guys took their talent to another state While others didn’t make it and sealed their own fate. With its rusty gates and wornout nets, A chance to play at Landreth schoolyard is what you get. Landreth School was there for a reason, Developing good players from season to season. To some, Landreth schoolyard is a thing of the past, But to me the memories will always last. Goodbye, Landreth School, with its rusty gates You will always be the best schoolyard in the state. fter an extensive search, Lower Merion and Philadelphia police departments located an officer of the former unit in FDR Park, Broad Street and Pattison Avenue. Sean Quinn, 46, was last seen at 5:30 a.m. in Ardmore Monday while his final contact with his family occurred about an hour later somewhere near Columbus Boulevard, according to the Lower Merion Police Department. He was supposed to report to work at 7 a.m., however, officers located him inside his personal vehicle at FDR Park unresponsive with a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.” “The Lower Merion Police Department wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to Officer Quinn’s family and friends and asks that they be kept in your thoughts and prayers as we all try to come to terms with this tragic event,” Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael McGrath said in a statement.

Tracking the crime The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals continues to look for clues since posting a $2,000 reward Feb. 7 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the death of the six pit bulls found dead along the railroad tracks in South of South Jan 30. Workers were completing a routine inspection of the tracks at 26th Street and Washington Avenue when they spotted several black trash bags containing the canines’ remains. The PSPCA’s humane law enforcement officers reported to the area and transported the bags back to their headquarters. The investigation is ongoing. Each animal had extensive injuries and wounds, and appeared to have died within 24 hours of discovery, the nonprofit’s Director of Humane Law Enforcement George Bengal said. “Until we have more details, we don’t want to speculate on the cause of the death, but we do know that these animals did not die of natural causes,” he said. “We urge anyone with information about how these dogs died or who placed them in that area to contact us.” To report information, call the group’s anti-cruelty hot line at 866-601-SPCA (7722).

Illegal view A Queen Village man was cited for providing private security for more than 30 city businesses without a license. Since 2011, Osvaldo Gallelli, 39, of the 1000 block of South Second Street, has provided private security services to 33 clients through his Northern Liberties’ operation, Prodigal Private Security, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Some of those whom he provided services to included restaurants, such as Center City’s El Vez and Rouge; entertainment venues like Fairmount’s Eastern State Penitentiary and University City’s World Café Live; events such as the Navy Yard’s Philly Craft Beer and International Beer festivals; as well as the University of Pennsylvania. Gallelli turned himself into the District Attorney’s Office Monday, at which time he was charged with 33 counts of violating the Private Detective Act of 1953 and was released on his own recognizance, according to court records.

asmin McNeil knows life can force alterations to even the most detailed and thoughtful plans, but if the 17-yearold has her druthers, she will become a registered nurse and pay forward all the help she has received. The senior at Universal Audenried Charter High School, 3301 Tasker St., and 25 other honorees gathered at City Hall Tuesday for the Lockheed Martin Police Athletic League Day, the 43rd recognition of city teenagers’ academic and community service successes. “I feel so fortunate to have this experience,” the resident of the 2700 block of Dickinson Street said of gaining recognition for her three-year involvement at her Grays Ferry secondary institution. “PAL has given me a great outlook, and anyone who becomes involved at a site is going to learn that staying active keeps young people out of trouble and away from violence.” The adolescent serves as Audenried’s homework club instructor and attendance coordinator; participates in the Positive Images Girls Mentoring Program, which offers healthy lifestyle advice, including leadership-building activities, career readiness discussions and physical awareness tutorials, to girls as young as 10; and picks up monetary skills at the Universal Companies’ Marketing Club, 800 S. 15th St. Due to become a certified nursing assistant next month, the future Drexel or Temple University learner and medical professional beamed as City officials, PAL officers and Lockheed Martin’s Gerry Fasano lauded how well she and the others have followed their personal prescriptions for distinction. “Your accomplishments give us hope for the future and surely will help you to become Philadelphia leaders,” Fasano, the president of information systems and global solutions for the security and aerospace company that has sponsored the event for seven years, said. “You have kept on the right track, and that is commendable considering all the pressures that could derail you.” Philly’s PAL centers have produced young visionaries since 1947, including Phillies’ general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., who attended Northeast Philly’s Gibbons

site; basketball immortal Wilt Chamberlain, who starred at Overbrook’s location; and boxing legend Joe Frazier, who prepared for his life as a pugilist at North Philly’s 23rd PAL destination. Montel Little had heard of the organization’s reputation for fostering athletic development so often, he thought sports would be his only option. Becoming aware of the various offerings through Janice Little, his grandmother and the stationed police officer at Point Breeze PAL, he has combined his athletic acumen and other interests for 12 years and credits it for shaping his mentality. “I joined Point Breeze PAL to learn about how to forge my future,” the 17-year-old Germantown resident and senior at Central High School said of the influential programming offered through George W. Childs School, 1599 Wharton St. “To anyone who is considering joining a center, I say do it because it will change your life.” Little has sated his athletic cravings through six sports, has expanded his literary acumen through reading programs and has shown his altruistic side through tutoring and computer and homework club duties. He maintains an active civic involvement, too, walking in AIDS, cancer and domestic violence events and will study animation and psychology once he selects from three college suitors.

NextFab 2. “I thought, ‘Wow, this place really exists,’” the Old City dweller said from the space’s second floor, an area where attendees perform most of their mental endeavors before heading to the equipment-heavy first floor. “It’s really a great destination for deliberation and action.” Like his fellow enthusiasts, Swanson has had opportunities to take classes to further his cognition and creativity, with numerous membership options to guide their level of interest, availability and commitment. “We’re not in the business of rushing ingenuity,” Malone, a University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University alumnus, said after a waterjet cutter designed a NextFab identification badge. “We’re warming up the engines to have people feel comfortable about tackling whatever they come to us with.” His venue, which formerly housed the Salini Bros. Ornamental Ironworks and underwent a $4-million renovation to accommodate the apparatuses, hosts individuals who have acquired expertise on their own or through its workshops and accepts assignments from assorted parties. Industrial employers soon will work with NextFab 2 to facilitate their operations through a partnership with the Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center and other entities. “That’s a slow process, too, but we’ve been able to give small businesses offices where they can ponder their marketing and advertising materials,” Malone said. “We essentially have solutions that fit any budget and are here to transform ideas into product prototypes and more and really bring about a sense of confidence to anyone who walks through our doors, especially those with visions they have doubted they have the time and/or ability to finalize.”

“Partnership income is not taxed at the partnership level,” according to the indictment. “Rather, partnership income is considered ‘flow-through’ income; that is, partnership income is to be split evenly between the partners and reported as business income on the partners’ personal federal income tax return.” His reported income spanned $96,000 to $177,000 in ’06 and ’07, during which he supposedly did not report about $44,000 each year, according to the indictment. In ’07 and ’08, he reported about $30,000, but allegedly brought in up to $80,000 more each year. During the latter two years, he allegedly had declared he was not employed and collected $12,272 in unemployment compensation between July ’07 and February ’08. He then is believed to have claimed K & O employed him until he was eligible for benefits again and collected another $13,212 between July ’08 and March ’09. If convicted, he could face more than 100 years in prison, five years supervised release, a $5.75-million fine and $2,300 special assessment, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Because of Washington Avenue West’s surplus of home construction and modification businesses, he picked the NextFab 2 site as a result of its likely ability to join the thoroughfare’s other locales as havens for problem-solvers and do-it-yourselfers. “It’s really been a convenient area for us, and being among companies so embedded in the neighborhood has been a plus, too,” he said. Scientifically-inclined individuals have frequented the framework in droves, calling on such amenities as lasers, 3-D printers, computercontrolled plasma cutters and a chemistry lab to show off their ingenuity, but brainiacs are not the only ones who could benefit from an excursion or membership. “We’re not highfalutin,” Malone said. “Anyone with a desire to improve accessories, design promotional materials for whatever endeavor or show off an affinity for crafts can find friends here. There can be a bit of an intimidation factor at first among participants, but once people come here, the integration becomes pretty relaxing.” The aforementioned tools have come to top NextFab 2’s offerings list, but someone also can use, among other treats, an industrial sewing machine, a photography studio, soldering stations and a wood shop, with raw materials sales also occurring on the premises. Children can become members, too, with Malone et al seeing the opportunity to guide young, analytical figures as a major reward. “We have a great relationship with [Center City-based] Philadelphia Futures to try to get more kids interested in the wonderful world of knowledge and discovery that science and its applications can afford them,” Malone said. Through the original location, he has developed partnerships to encourage such curiosity, with the Sea Perch Ro-

botics Team, composed of School District of Philadelphia high schoolers, winning trophies at two recent Drexel University-held competitions for remotely operated vehicles. “I just enjoy the calm atmosphere and the opportunity to mingle with other people with novel ideas or with difference approaches to everyday situations,” Roxborough’s Sam Finney, a two-year member who is working on bringing commercial agricultural techniques to home gardens, said. Such people will gather Saturday for a show and tell event, where they will give and receive feedback for their concepts. On Feb. 21, Malone will welcome members for NextFab 2’s first social, another occasion to see how fluidly their creative juices are flowing. “Science can be a bit of a conundrum because it appears to many people to be too intensive, even though most of it strives to simplify life,” Malone, who mentioned his site’s help in improving technology for breast cancer and glaucoma screenings and management as proof, said of his field. “We’re looking to be that support for those with drive.” SPR For more information, visit nextfabstudio.com. common conception holds that most artists will receive adulation only posthumously. As he sold only one of his more than 900 works yet has become a coveted creator for collectors, Vincent van Gogh offers proof of that belief. Brian Cowden knows all about the struggles the Dutch master faced during his brief life and beginning Tuesday, he will portray the painter as a young man seeking affection and inspiration in the Walnut Street Theatre’s production of “Vincent in Brixton.” “I play him as someone who is starting to discover the depth of his desires, both artistically and sensually,” the resident of the 800 block of Dudley Street said of the PostImpressionist icon following a Feb. 7 rehearsal. “Part of the appeal is knowing where he will go, but at the start of the

LIFESTYLES action, he is only a 20-year-old with ample ambition yet little direction.” The four-act piece debuted in 2003 at London’s National Theatre, capturing that year’s Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play and a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. It opens in 1873 and situates van Gogh as a London-based art dealer who develops feelings for his landlady’s daughter. The script mixes fact and fiction, with Cowden drawn to the chief by-product of that blend. “He gets to be in love and open his heart despite the possibility of heartbreak,” the 27-year-old East Passyunk Crossing inhabitant said. “That opportunity to notice and go after beauty unabashedly is a great feeling for him and a great one for me to bring to the stage.” Having a chance to convey that vulnerability nearly fell to someone else, as Cowden had auditioned for another role. He landed the job in June and began formal preparation last month, although he confesses to feeling as if he had nearly nailed a huge aspect of van Gogh’s identity long before setting eyes on Nicholas Wright’s opus. “We both have a tremendous sense of drive and urge to put into our craft as much as we can to produce a better understanding of our connection to others,” he said. “However, we differ in a few ways that make taking on his persona so instructional.”

Syntactical elements and discrepancies in views on the frequency of occasions to thrive head their variations, with Cowden finding van Gogh’s blind sense of having only one shot at success disturbing and invigorating. “In searching for his ‘in,’ he struggled to accept that failure is often a call to modify an approach and not necessarily a demand to revamp oneself,” he said, adding his character’s religious leanings, psychological and physical frailties and engrossing pursuits of acceptance all earn examination in the play, which is receiving its first staging at the Walnut, the nation’s oldest continuously operating theater at 204 years old. “He marched to a different beat and felt pushed in so many directions, all to find out the various aspects of what it means to love and explore his artistry,” Cowden said. “He lost more often than he won, but I can’t play what’s yet to come. I’m Vincent as someone who wants a bright future yet who cannot fully grasp his present.” ALONG WITH AN abundant reserve of zeal, the thespian shares with van Gogh a desire to be the center of attention. That yearning led the Mechanicsburg native to take improvisation classes as a youth and made his early adulthood a period for altering lofty goals that included being a film star.

artistic skills to use until the final scene, but Cowden believes his depiction catches van Gogh at a formative stage, where art for art’s sake meshes with love for love’s sake to produce a pitiful yet powerful look at the play’s namesake. As a teacher and stage combat instructor at Center City’s MacGuffin Theatre & Film Co., he encourages his 12- to 17-year-old students to be as adamant about being emotive as he is when attacking a script. Along with strengthening his mind, Cowden builds up his body as a mixed martial artist, with two amateur bouts to his name. “It’s great to have an outlet outside the theater,” Cowden, whose “Vincent” castmates include Liz Filios of the 1600 block of South Fifth Street as the title character’s sister, said. “Plus, I’m really excited about continuing ‘My Ruined Life,’ which is a film series I do that has won some awards. Like van Gogh, I’m interested in exploring what life has to offer, but even if things become a little uncertain, I intend to keep my ears intact.” SPR See What’s Happening on page 18 for show details. “I came to love the immediacy of theater more,” Cowden said of the professional shift that occurred during his sophomore year at Center City’s University of the Arts. “I felt as if I could gain more of a sense of what motivates people and channels their energy.” A talent for tackling diverse roles has benefited Cowden, whose turn as van Gogh will mark his second time at the Walnut following 2009’s world premiere of “The Eclectic Society.” He has worked for Philadelphia’s Arden, Mauckingbird and Pig Iron theatre companies and Azuka Theatre and the Malvern-based People’s Light & Theatre Co., developing a knack for appreciating each individual’s nuances. In that vein, he has done considerable homework on van Gogh, who died of a supposedly self-inflicted gunshot wound at 37. “He lived a damaged existence,” Cowden said of the figure, who battled alcohol dependency, a strained friendship with fellow Post-Impressionist Paul Gaugain and mental instability that led him in 1888 to cut off his left ear. The performer does not have to examine such heavy despair in the work, which spans the winter through summer of ’73 and concludes in the fall of ’75, nor does he have to put his self-professed horrific

(or ethnic or racial lines either). It meant a distinctly smaller dating pool at Temple in the late ’50s for me. There was the girl at school with a reputation. Reputation or not, I still struck out. On prom night we double dated only to find out the other girl had “forgotten” to request an extension of her curfew, so the night ended early for the four of us. My next romance didn’t end well either. Her parents were strict Catholics, born in Ireland. When they saw me show up at the door wearing my father’s chocolate brown cashmere coat, it was if they had seen Lucifer in the flesh. It didn’t help me with her dad when I showed up at the door at 5 p.m. on Memorial Day to take her to a picnic. “What kind of a picnic begins at 5 o’clock?” he wanted to know. It was a good question for which I had no ready answer. The girl was very devout and let’s just say I was less so. This led to her seeking advice from a friend, who also happened to be a priest, about where our relationship was heading. He told her exactly where it was heading and our romance was no more. One source of dating for young radio disc jockeys in my day were anonymous female listeners who would call while a record was playing to flirt with you. Disc jockeys of that time always placed great stock in the possibilities of such relationships (and likely still do today). I tested those perilous waters twice while playing jazz at WHAT-FM. The first time began with a phone call from a young woman with a French accent, which, at least on the telephone, made her seem very sexy. It turned out she was much more interested in meeting the late French jazz pianist Bernard Peiffer. I was a poor, unsophisticated substitute whose contact with things French was limited to French toast and French dry cleaning. The second date with an anonymous caller (she liked the Miles Davis-Gil Evans version of “My Ship,” a song by Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin) also ended with me boring her out of her mind (she expected Miles Davis?). Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in awhile. This blind squirrel found the Hope Diamond on a typical ’50s first date in Wildwood, N.J. We got caught in a thunderstorm walking to dinner and had to flee to safety in a nearby Laundromat. There was a first kiss standing in the darkness near the entrance to her parents’ apartment house. We stood there, fearful her parents would catch us. A mist was falling and once we jumped in fright when a taxi rode by, we were bathed in the glare of its headlights. Twisted with ‘Side Effects’ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

S

teven Soderbergh has spent his career displaying a gift for genre diversity, and in “Side Effects,” the director’s final theatrical film, he fittingly melds a few types of movies, emerging with a largely satisfying thriller. Things kick off with the emotional unraveling of Emily (Rooney Mara), a depressed Manhattanite whose husband, Martin (Channing Tatum), has just been released from prison for insider trading. Emily sees Dr. Banks (Jude Law), who prescribes the latest and greatest happy pill, but when apparent side effects drive Emily to commit unspeakable acts, the heat of the case falls as much on Banks as it does on his patient. Thus, the murky tale of a troubled girl coincides with the plight of a good man losing face, giving the audience options of whom to care and root for. Evoking everything from “Primal Fear” and “Rosemary’s Baby” to “Dial M for Murder” and TV’s “Homeland,” the script by Scott Z. Burns oozes paranoia and conspiracy, and Soderbergh’s classy helming of the material (which includes the use of a killer Thomas Newman score) makes much of it feel artful and new. But there’s yet more layers in this onion-esque enigma, and as more are peeled back, the less appeal the film retains. What begins as an offbeat mutual character study becomes a rather boilerplate twistfest, and one that’s ultimately wrapped up too cleanly to boot. Where “Side Effects” scores is in its pharma-industry commentary, which explores the real potential dangers of the fine print on new drugs, and how Emily’s particular

case is very bad for business. More interesting still is the questions it raises about therapist-patient discourse, and what hardships may come, legal or otherwise, to the doctor whose couch-dweller falls to pieces. As said patient, Mara is compelling, making good on the promise of her “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Oscar nomination, which felt somewhat unearned at the time. She’s the perfect dark dame to tackle this tricky role, which, in an almost film-noir style, often leaves you uncertain if she’s femme fatale or damsel in distress.

n past years, my Valentine’s Day column concentrated on the somewhat wry, cynical anecdotes about love. In this modern age where lust is often mistaken for love (I feel as if I might break out in a couple of choruses of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” right about here), sometimes it seems as if romance is an antiquated idea. I admit when I watch the HBO series “Girls,” there is anything but love connected to the so-called act of love. What am I as an older male doing watching “Girls” anyway? I watch the show primarily as a conversation piece to discuss with a friend and hopefully to get some insight into a generation that is as different from mine as aliens from another planet. And hey, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar tweeted recently about the show! While the show is well-written by Lena Dunham and sometimes has good comedic moments, it paints a picture of a generation of young men and women for whom sex is more often about consoling a disappointed friend or as something you do after you knock down a few beers. In many ways, I marvel at how friendships among young folks often cross gender lines. We always viewed the other sex as something mysterious to be approached with caution. Today, the big question hovering over a first date for females is: Do I have sex with him? Compare that to the 1950s when the big question was: Do I kiss him on the first date? More often than not the answer was “no.” I look back upon my own past relationships more with amusement than regret. I recall the breathless excitement I once felt, as a college student, calling a popular girl who lived in the dorms for a date. And that riotous rainy night when I picked her up in a taxi. As she entered the cab, I inadvertently slammed her head with the handle of my umbrella. If that had happened today, they would have called in a concussion specialist to examine her. Not surprisingly, there was no second date, although the way she called off our second date was unusual even for ’56. She sent me a telegram saying her out-of-town family had paid her a surprise visit. A telegram! Later I learned from a friend of hers that her Jewish parents were not keen about her dating a gentile. We accepted, without resentment, that some families didn’t allow dating across religious lines

hen talking recipes with the word “stew” in them, there’s a good chance the term “leftovers” will follow. Some may get bored with eating the same dish two to three nights in a row, but Theresa Maiellano’s Beef Stew includes hearty helpings of meat, carrots and peas blended with tomato and onion flavorings that are sure to please every time. While the preparation may sound like an all-day affair, the resident of the 1500 block of Forrestal Street keeps her version simple. A warm bowl of her creation is a meal worth savoring. SPR

1 to 2 pounds of boneless cube stew beef 2 tablespoons of flour 2 tablespoons of oil 1 package of onion soup mix 1 cup of water 2 cans of tomato juice 4 carrots, chopped 1-1/2 cups of peas

Shake the beef and flour in a plastic bag. Place the contents in a skillet with the oil and sauté over medium heat until brown. Combine the soup mix and water. Add to the skillet and continue to cook slowly until the meat is tender, for about 40 minutes. Add the tomato juice, carrots and cover. Reduce the heat to low. Add the peas with about five minutes to go.

comes alive when it marries well with any type of bacon. Grilled asparagus ($7) is a good example. We received four spears of mid-thickness wrapped in thin slices of prosciutto, dusted with herbs and grilled just right. Since Redwood is described as an American bistro, the cooks like to mix up the cuisines. I have not seen fried green tomatoes ($6) on a restaurant menu since our last venture down South. Three green tomato slices were dried of any excess moisture, dusted in flavorful crumbs and deep-fried to a golden brown. They were stacked up on the plate and topped with a dollop of homemade marinara and bits of feta cheese. I didn’t think these disparate flavors would work but they surely did. The marinara was obviously homemade and rich with tiny chunks of slightly acidic tomato along with the tang of the feta and seasoned crumbs. We could have eaten a second order. Redwood might be the first new restaurant on South Street to become a wine destination for those of us who enjoy a glass with dinner. The installation of a cruvinet was a fine idea. Edward and I shared a glass of Domaine Montfaucon Cotes du Rhone ($6.75), which had a jammy flavor and a plum-like aroma. Now to the gumbo, which must begin with a dark caramel roux. crayfish. For me, sausage is a must. Redwood serves a chicken and andouille gumbo ($6). The roux could have been darker and richer but it was tasty and included the proper addition of spice and heat. Tabasco sauce also is a must and although it packs heat, it was not too hot for me. Chopped tomatoes were added to the pot along with shreds of chicken breast and a tiny bit of andouille. I would have liked to have seen more sausage in the mix. Unfortunately, the long grain rice was way undercooked. Steak frittes ($20) was a simple grilled steak, which arrived rare, and was prepared au poivre. Peppercorns were crushed and deeply massaged into the beef before it hit the pan or the grill. religiously watch CBS “Sunday Morning” with Charles Osgood because I think it is one of the finest news magazine programs on the air. On Super Bowl Sunday, the program headed to New Orleans where a reporter told viewers about the history of Tabasco sauce and New Orleans-born-and-raised musician Wynton Marsalis found himself in a home kitchen making gumbo. I immediately developed a craving for it. Fortunately for me, Redwood, a fourmonth-old restaurant on South Street, listed chicken and andouille gumbo on the menu. Edward and I discovered the establishment while driving down South Street. We decided to pay a visit on a bitterly cold night and warmed up immediately as we entered. The front room is brightly lit and features a long mirrored bar, tin ceiling, highly polished wood tables and brightly colored banquettes done up in sunny shades of gold, red and orange. Cocktails ($7.50 to $9) were icy cold and expertly mixed. The menu features small plates, which were not small, like tapas, salads, sandwiches and entrées. Redwood has a cruvinet for those who appreciate fine, but not overly pricey, wines and a heft beer selection. We nibbled on the house made potato chips ($5) to take the edge off our appetites. The chips were fried in duck fat, which imparted an indescribable flavor, dusted with five-spice powder and sea salt and arrived piping hot. The chips came with a ramekin of aioli whipped with cilantro and a hint of ginger. Quite often a simple, fresh vegetable

moking meats is a multi-day process at Blue Belly BBQ, 600 Catharine St., but chef Gene Giuffi and his wife Amy aim to provide tasty, high quality smoked selections. “We don’t really prescribe to any one kind of barbecue,” Amy Giuffi said, noting her husband prefers a smokey taste. The pair, who resides in Bella Vista — just four blocks from Blue Belly — and also runs the French-inspired Cochon BYOB, 801 E. Passyunk Ave., has opted to share its Baked Beans recipe. “It’s just a traditional side dish,” Gene Giuffi, who hails from Brooklyn, N.Y., said. “We just do our own version, add some of our own smoked meats.” “It’s delicious. There’s a lot of flavors, layers to it. It’s smoked meats, different cuts of meat. I think there’s a slight kick,” his wife added asking the chef if he uses Tabasco sauce. “When I feel like it,” he said in response.

The side portion is $4, or may be selected as one of three sides when ordering a smoked platter at Blue Belly BBQ, which also provides takeout and delivery orders via its website. And now also may be attempted at home. SPR

INGREDIENTS: 4 ounces of bacon, diced 2 cups of onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, chopped 2 tablespoons of fresh ginger, grated 30 ounces of cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1/4 cup of dark brown sugar 1/2 cup of barbecue sauce 1/4 cup of ketchup 1 tablespoons of dry mustard

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cook the bacon until brown in a heavy pot large enough to fit all

of the ingredients on the stovetop. Discard all but 3 tablespoons of the bacon fat. Saute the onion, garlic and ginger for about eight minutes. Add all of the remaining ingredients and stir. As her elementary football schedule dwindled, she knew beginning high school would cause her to try other ventures. “I attended Goretti and recall receiving an invitation to try out for the freshman team at St. John Neumann,” Germana said of the former Grays Ferry secondary site at 2600 Moore St., which merged with her alma mater in 2004. “Though I consider playing, I wasn’t willing to end up hurt, and I know I would have had my [butt] kicked, so that was that.” FINE WITH THE transition, she played basketball and softball for the East Passyunk Crossing institution, though tearing her ACL as a senior jeopardized her opportunities to play collegiately. She matriculated at New Jersey’s Rider University, where academics came to top athletics as

She has been following the Pla clan’s fight to keep Caroline on her Bucks County unit, a process that diocesan spokesman Ken Gavin has said will involve a review of his employer’s stance on football-related gender integration, and she stated that her only child likely will become aware of the societal implications, as she challenges him to keep an open mind. “I don’t want him to think that girls have to be limited to certain activities and that boys must think a certain way or need to be afraid to show emotions or even cry,” Germana said. “I’d like for them to let Caroline play for as long as it is safe for her to play. I don’t know how long that might be, but cutting her off now would be unfair. “I give her credit for her fighting spirit. oe Germana approaches life with an appreciable blend of idealism and pragmatism. The philosophical movements help the West Passyunk product to recount the joy of her physical movements as a football force for the since-shuttered St. Edmond School, formerly 23rd and Mifin streets. Current backlash against a Doylestown girl’s quest to continue to compete against boys has given Germana even more cause to reminisce as she marks the 30th anniversary of her last display of gridiron gusto. “I definitely will support her for as long as she can keep up,” the Hamilton, N.J., resident said Friday of 11-year-old Carolina Pla, whose family is contending with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia over its claim that Catholic Youth Organization football is a full-contact sport designated for boys, with her reaching an age where lining up against male foes could prove dangerous as an underlying element. “She will be weeded out as everyone ages and will end up knocked around. It’s reality, natural selection, after all, and those guys are going to grow fast.” A native of the 2000 block of South Croskey Street, Germana experienced an entirely different existence when she began donning a helmet as a third-grader. A street hockey, touch football and wiffleball buff, the self-professed tomboy had little knowledge of the intricacies of tackle football prior to choosing it as a pastime following a banquet for older brother Wayne, but the opportunity to master them had not inspired her to suit up anyway. “I wanted trophies,” Germana said of the significance of her sibling’s pigskin event. “I had my interest in playing approved shortly after and let pure enthusiasm guide me.” Ample school and community support aided the girl, who quickly became a consummate contributor, earning plaudits from opposing coaches such as Pat DiPilla. “Rosie was a tough cookie,” the present athletic director of Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., said of trying to devise ways for his St. Monica School squad, 16th and Porter streets, to stop Germana, whose father, Sam, served

as a St. Edmond’s assistant coach. “She was as aggressive as any boy out there, too.” Germana became a starter in her second season, with her gender being an underthe-radar topic, as she never heard of any overt criticism of her participating. She knew of no rule barring her from fulfilling her fullback and linebacker duties, though her family never approached the diocese for confirmation. “Because of my background, I never felt pressure to be too girly, so I saw playing tackle football as my way of being a trailblazer,” she said. “I mean, I dreamt of being in the Super Bowl.” That ambition led Germana to become St. Edmond’s captain, and she garnered
