What’s bothering Frank

To the Editor: It seems to me that it’s the little things that bother me the most. I wonder if any of you feel the same. For instance, if basketball players get any taller, they won’t have to reach up to the basket. All they will have to do is bend down and dunk the ball. I remember many years in the past that almost all players were of average sizes and heights and so was the basket. I believe if you are going to have near giants playing the game, it is only fair the basket should be raised accordingly. I would love to hear comments from those who think otherwise and why. Another irritation of mine is that hockey has become a game for gladiators where players punch the living daylights out of each other. What was once a fine sport has become a bloodletting spectacle, and I am maddened by the spectators cheering them on, almost wishing the players had spears and swords instead of hockey sticks. What does this say about those who attend the so-called sport and clamor more for blood and less for the game? I don’t care how angry it makes the so-called sportsman feel — this jewel of a sport that has raged on for years, it seems, tears the heart from me in its cruel and callous hardheartedmess. Many years ago it was done for food, survival and necessity. Today, it’s for joy. Rifles, shotguns, knives, bows and arrows are used to kill unsuspecting and innocent animals — mostly not for food, but for sport and trophies. Look at the fun these sportsmen would have if a law were passed making it legal and OK to hunt and kill humans. My way of thinking is much more fun because of the amount of blood that would spurt from humans who don’t have fur to hide most of their blood. Instead of hanging or electrocuting felons, let them loose in the woods and give hunters a field day. I hate to step on a cockroach. Does it make me less of a man?

One day, I sincerely hope all of mankind will have hearts. Frank Cavallaro South Philadelphia

For anyone who has a heart To the Editor: Although Valentine’s Day has passed, and this letter may be considered a couple weeks late, I decided that there should never be an expiration date to write about love. I know Valentine’s Day has become very materialistic, as have many other holidays. But it does not change the fact that it transforms an otherwise dreary month into a hearty and festive occasion. A sea of pink and

red flowers and hearts are found in every store and many neighborhood windows, including my own. Of course, these things, although very superficial, simply make us feel happy. I’ve always believed that the deepest forms of love are the things that you don’t see and the words that you don’t say, but rather it’s the unspoken word that is the truest and most heartfelt. It needs no explanation or description, it just is. And so, in the midst of sad events and some gloomy days, we have all taken a timeout to remember love. Four men were wounded after leaving a rap show at a Whitman club. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor

A

n unknown shooter fired multiple shots at a vehicle and its passengers as they left Club Onyx, 2908 S. Columbus Blvd., Monday night. As a 2012 silver Honda Accord headed north on the 2100 block of South Columbus Boulevard at 3:22 p.m., an unknown person pulled up beside the passenger’s side of the stationary vehicle at the Snyder Avenue light and opened fire, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Bullets struck the vehicle and three passengers. The 21-year-old driver was unscathed. A fourth man also was injured, but it remains unclear if he also was in the same car. Private vehicles transported the four victims to three different hospitals. The 32-year-old front passenger was in stable condition at Delaware’s Christiana Hospital with a bullet to his right leg that fractured his tibia, Tolliver said. A 19-yearold rear passenger suffered a wounded right hand and was transported to Pennsylvania Hospital and then transferred to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he was treated and released. A 26-year-old rear passenger and 27-year-old man were transported to Chester’s Crozer-Keystone Community Hospital. The younger male was released after being treated for a leftshoulder wound while the man who may have been in another vehicle was listed in stable condition with wounds to his right shoulder and leg. Detectives recovered ballistics evidence, shattered glass and blood at the scene, Tolliver said. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

EXPERIENCE IS WHAT COUNTS

POLICE REPORT

A Pennsport retail store’s employees averted a robbery while a passer-by’s 911 call helped police to nab the alleged offenders. A 38-year-old male store manager at Marshall’s, 2000 S. Swanson St., opened the front door to allow his first-shift employees to enter at 9:56 a.m. Feb. 24, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A 57-year-old male employee saw three masked men approach the door, so he informed his 43-year-old

male coworker, who quickly closed and locked the door just before one of the offenders attempted to open it. The trio fled on foot removing their masks as they ran westbound toward Water Street through an alley bordering the southern side of the store, Tolliver said. When a 31-year-old pulled into the parking lot, he saw the suspicious men and called police. Police spotted the alleged offenders who matched the given descriptions about six blocks away in an alley between the 300 blocks of Wolf and Daly streets, Tolliver said. Police surrounded Khalil McDonald and Jamire Drummond, both 19, of Southwest Philly, while other responding officers demanded Avont Marshall, also 19, of Southwest Philly, to stop. When Marshall, allegedly reached for his waistband, an officer pointed his firearm and demanded Marshall show his hands, Marshall is believed to have retrieved a silver handgun and threw it to the ground. The officer continued to hold Marshall at gunpoint until more backup arrived. The three teens were arrested and charged with conspiracy, robbery, attempted theft, firearm violations and related offenses, according to court records. None of the men had posted their respective $150,000 bail as of press time. Police recovered a loaded firearm, a pair of black gloves, a black jacket and two black backpacks containing masks, clothing, flex cuffs and duct tape from a backyard on the 300 block of Daly Street, Tolliver said.

Cousin collaboration Police arrested two Point Breeze relatives last week for allegedly beating and robbing a taxi driver in Upper Darby. A 53-year-old cabbie was inside his vehicle waiting for a customer outside of SEPTA’s 69th Street Terminal at 11:10 p.m. Feb. 14 when Nahfeeh Williams, 18, and Dawald Williams, 25, both of the 2000 block of Mifflin Street, asked to go to Southwest Philly, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit. Upon reaching their destination, Nahfeeh Williams allegedly wrapped a belt around the driver’s neck, choking him while Dawald Williams grabbed his wallet, containing ID, debit cards and $100. The pair, who police believe are cousins, supposedly forced their victim in the cab’s trunk, beat him until

POLICE REPORT he gave them his pin numbers and locked him inside. Three days later police retrieved SEPTA surveillance video of the suspects getting into the taxi, according to the Police Public AfNahfeeh fairs Unit. Authorities Williams released the video to the public Feb. 19, and received a tip the same day that the pair were at an Upper Darby apartment where police arrested both men. They were charged with attempted murder, Dawald robbery, kidnapping, Williams conspiracy, false imprisonment and related offenses, according to court records. Neither has posted his respective $1 million bail as of press time.

Surveillance video Police have released surveillance video of a failed-then-successful Point Breeze robbery. Two men were loitering on the 2000 block of Sigel Street before starting to walk into Nana Grocery Store, 1826 S. 20th St., at 7:10 p.m. Feb. 18, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit. Upon seeing a customer, the two retreated and returned 20 minutes later. During their second attempt, the armed man stood at the door as a lookout while the other demanded cash from the 42-yearold cashier, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Her 21-yearold associate insisted she do as was asked, but before she could the man jumped on the counter and grabbed $200 from the register. The younger worker hit the panic alarm and the robbing duo fled in an unknown direction. The armed robber was described as black with a dark complexion, age 18 to 20, 5-foot-5, and wearing a black and graystriped jacket, dark-colored jeans and a ski mask while his accomplice was described as black with a dark complexion, age 18 to 20, 5-foot-9 and wearing a blue jacket, black hoodie and a white ski mask.

Zevin’s Drug Store Inc., 800 McKean St., at 11:18 a.m. Monday and ordered the 56-year-old manager, two employees and two customers to put their hands up and drop to the ground. The armed robber escorted the manager to the store’s rear office and demanded he hand over Percocet, Oxycontin and money in his maroon duffel bag with tan handles. His accomplice kept an eye on the others and the pair fled westbound on McKean Street with $200 and an unknown amount of prescription drugs. The armed robber was described as black with a medium complexion, 6-foot3, heavyset and wearing black clothing, a black ski mask and tan canvas work gloves with blue grips on the palms while his lookout was described as black with a dark complexion, 5-foot-7, heavyset and wearing a black coat, ski mask and gloves. Police suspect the same men robbed Bertolino’s Pharmacy, 1500 S. 12th St., at 10:37 a.m. Feb. 11, according to the 3rd District. During the earlier robbery (“Inventory clearance,” Feb. 21), the duo yelled, “Give me the drugs,” ordered everyone to the ground, placed an unknown amount of cash, prescription drugs and cigarettes in a gray bag and fled northbound on 12th Street, according to police. Going once, going twice... A Queen Village school will hold an auction to counter likely budget cuts. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

enna Makuen appreciates the entire learning experience when she fraternizes with her second-grade peers and authority figures at William M. Meredith School, 725 S. Fifth St. The vivacious girl enjoys art, but as the School District of Philadelphia contends with consistent debt, her creative pursuits soon could dry up. To try to prevent the loss of her interest and other ambitions, her Queen Village institution’s Home and School Association will hold its seventh annual auction Saturday night at The IATSE Ballroom, 2401 S. Swanson St. “I believe Meredith is a very good school that is trying to move to be a great school, but without more resources, we’re going to struggle to do that,” Principal Cindy Farlino said Monday. “We’re in such a predicament now that parent community involvement, which should be for deepening and enriching our site, has become something we rely on to fulfill daily operations here.” The fifth-year leader and other locations’ heads recently met with district Chief Financial Officer Matthew E. Stanski, and learned their educational havens could have to function on a miniscule budget, as the overseer attempts to dwindle a deficit that a report notes could amount to $1.35 billion over the next five years. That news has colored this year’s auction with a touch of dismay, a distant cry from its predecessors at the ballroom; the Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St.; the Mummers Museum, 1100 S. Second St.; and the Waterfall Room, 2015 S. Water St. “We started out looking to enhance classes and our identity,” committee co-chair Donielle Calabrese, the mother of fifth-grader Natalie, said of the gatherings, whose proceeds have allowed them to secure additional time for the school nurse, revamp their auditorium’s sound system, purchase laptop carts and develop a diversity curriculum with an anti-bullying component. “Now we’re galvanizing to give thanks to our dedicated principal and teachers, who love and care for our children.” Farlino and her staff help to instruct 530 pupils in kindergarten through eighth grade, and the 18 classrooms each have a role in prepping for Saturday, with handmade crafts and themed baskets among the auction items. Meredith following her family’s move from Seattle last winter, the experience proved productive and perhaps prophetic. “Our craft project was making blackboards to explain what we want to be when we’re older,” the resident of the 700 block of Fitzwater Street, whose mother, Rebecca, aids Calabrese as a committee presence, said, adding that she chose “veterinarian” as a vocation. “I have fun with everything I do here, so it’s good to help.” The enthused youngster is hoping her mom can win a babysitting offer that her teacher, Serena Kuney, has included among the night’s choices. “That should be really neat,” she said as her mother vowed to make a valiant attempt. PRIOR TO THE budget meeting, Farlino, Calabrese and Makuen had hoped to endow the fifth through eighth grades with iPads and to soundproof their gymnasium. With the bleak financial situation, though, this weekend’s event instead will center on sustenance over extravagance. “We’re really hoping for a fantastic turnout,” Calabrese, a Packer Park resident, said of the celebration, which will include a silent and live auction with a professional auctioneer, a Meredith first. As proof of Farlino’s belief that great

families help her spot to excel, a pair of parents will give the night more novelty with a “Why We Love Meredith” video presentation just before the live auction. Jim Donovan, holder of 13 Emmy Awards for consumer reporting, will handle the master of ceremony duties, and DJ Johnny Looch, of the 700 block of South 10th Street, will show his pride as a Meredith parent by spinning tunes. “Through sheer willpower they came,” Makuen said of how she and her peers landed more than 200 donors for the occasion at the Whitman destination. “We went through many talks on securing backers, and most of the time we isolated neighborhoods for help.” Their outreach has resulted in a diverse set of opportunities, including a summer vacation at a Cape Hatteras beach house; a VIP tour of the United States Capitol; a private makeup class at Neiman Marcus; floor seats to see the 76ers; a helmet adorned with the Flyers’ signatures; cooking classes; and gift cards to museums, restaurants and theaters. Along with the professional sports franchises, South Philly will have ample representation among the benefactors. “We’re at a point where we may need even more onsite support from our parents,” Farlino said, citing having to enlist

parents as welcome desk attendants, “so whatever we can generate from the auction not to overburden them is going to be much appreciated.” Farlino’s fifth graders, including Emma Bertolino, Natalie and her cousin, Reno Dagostino, placed 3-D images on blocks for their auction crafts, painting moons, rainbows, stars and suns. The three children have told their families they want for them to win “the fun stuff,” like craft classes, experiences with their teachers and the chance to be principal for a day. “We like helping our school however we can,” Emma, of the 1200 block of Dickinson Street, said. “Your money will pay off in helping us to be strong,” Natalie added. Reno is seeing the evening as a chance for adults to bond and band together for Meredith’s survival. “We want your presence,” the Packer Park dweller said. “Your money would be nice, too.” SPR

JAZZ SANCTUARY continued from page 1 he and Joy Segal, his wife of 31 years and Gloria Dei’s pastor, live. “For me, it is this music, and I have many people to thank for that and for my sanity, really.” He and his peers will make their monthly appearance at his abode as representatives of the church-stationed Jazz Sanctuary, which he orchestrated last year to forge camaraderie with audiences and promote free music education and devised to rejuvenate what an ailment had all but deteriorated. For Segal, a certified public accountant by trade, nothing ever will prove as taxing as that which inspired his ingenuity. “My musical background kicked off when I was 36 years old,” the West Philadelphia native and Temple University product said of heeding a friend’s suggestion to have his hands join his feet, which he had been gliding across floors as a dance student and an instructor, as competent limbs. “I can’t say, though, I was that into the bass for the longest time, as I played at it, not in it.” Seeking an upgrade, he purchased a Kydd Bass in 2005, with its slender structure resulting in a relaxed playing style. Enamored with the guitar, he feared he would part with it, his spouse and friends the next year when he suffered a cerebral arteriovenous malformation, an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain, and learned he had a 40 percent chance of surviving. “The diagnosis came in May, and I had surgery in December, making for a very pleasant waiting period,” Segal said, flashing a wry smile. The already humble individual soon increased his docile demeanor, as his tribulation initially deprived him on his hand-eye coordination, fluency of speech and sense of balance, the final element proving the most disturbing because of his prior prowess as a dancer. He began his recovery with walks in his residence, and as his gait slowly returned, so did his ambition to tame the bass. “It made me and coordination friends again,” Segal said of practicing for as many as eight hours a day. “I became a technician, which is easy to become. It’s morphing into a musician that required a bit more guidance.” As his life came to combine personal conviction and interpersonal determination, he found playing jazz, with its fusion of solo opportunities and group dynamics, a perfect metaphor for his revitalization. Through pianist and friend George Sinkler, he recruited drummer Leon Jordan and saxophonist Eddie Etkins to further that fire. The Alan Segal Quartet debuted

roughly one year after his ordeal and eventually gave its namesake enhanced maturation and inspiration. “I started feeling even more alive and eager to explore my jazz identity,” Segal said. “I credit that to my band mates and to everyone who supported me. With the former, we developed such trust that I say we breathe together.” F OR THE LATTER and even for strangers, the grateful personality, whose musical career includes working with rock and country groups; forming the 12-piece

Jack Alan Band, which offered country tunes through tours of the tri-state area in the 1980s; and producing for bands and vocalists, decided to form the Jazz Sanctuary, for which he serves as president, and last year created Jazz & Joe, a series of coffeehouse-style performances at houses of worship. Business friendships yielded sponsorships to cover 65 percent of the annual budget, with show donations joining with entities’ contributions to pay the sanctuary’s roster of vocalists and musicians, except for Segal.

“I don’t want money,” he said. “I want bonds with my peers and our patrons instead.” His role with the organization, which visits 11 churches, jams at special events and hopes to situate its representatives in public institutions such as libraries and charitable associations, leaves him feeling “absolutely no pressure.” He gladly courts backers and loves prepping his bass for the concerts, which draw as many as 150 spectators, including a parish’s registrants and community members. With 180 songs in their repertoire, mostly time-tested creations from the ’30s and ’40s, they stage two-hour shows, though Segal would not mind if they were to last at least twice as long. “With this bass, I feel no tension, as it allows me to play for hours,” the craftsman said. As the tunes all rely on his thumping aid, Segal loves to be a showman without being a braggart. “I’m to outline a song and hold on to the bottom of it while helping my friends to create intense audience receptivity,” he said. “We offer something far warmer and participatory and benefit from the generosity of the crowds, as they bring cheers and food to our little bashes.” With at least 21 Jazz & Joe concerts slated for this year, Segal appreciates the response his brainchild has garnered and hopes to receive as much support for an additional aim. “For those who cannot afford music education, I’m working to obtain a grant for them to get free instruction,” he said. “I cannot imagine a world without music, art and literature. What a tragedy it would be.” As his cerebral drama nearly claimed his life twice, Segal has a great grasp on enjoying the finest elements of his journey and respecting character-building setbacks. Though he occasionally suffers from balance troubles, his strength and verbal voracity have mostly returned. “I love to communicate,” he said. “Because of a mishap during my intubation, I’m a bit hoarse and have a voice perfect for the blues, not that I could carry a tune in a bucket. I’ll stick with the bass.” SPR

Armed with ponderous tunes, a Queen Village musician is plotting success for his alternative rock band. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

n a world laden with instability, Dave Pitone has resolutely crafted careers as a lawyer, screenwriter and tennis coach. Always courting fulfillment yet cognizant of its fleeting nature, the Queen Village resident has spent the last three years involving himself in a field synonymous with thrilling high and bewildering lows — music. His venture has thus far proven more fruitful than frustrating, as Wooden Hez, his alternative rock band, has generated local support and soon will embark on a tour to back its debut album. “I suppose, like any musician or artist,

I’m just looking to create something beautiful, knowing the reward could be instant, way down the road or nonexistent,” the 49-year-old of the 100 block of Pemberton Street said. “We’re hoping to get some national attention and get signed. Essentially, the sky’s the limit.” His trio will seek that expanded renown April 12, with a 10-day trek

through Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. It will perform pieces from “Children’s Parade,” the eight-track collection it released in early December at Connie’s Ric Rac, 1132 S. Ninth St., with Pitone, the lead singer and principal lyricist, conveying the struggle to fend off anguish and despair. “We’re more about the music, so if the words reflect something about ourselves, that’s incidental,” the guitarist said of his two-year-old group. “I have grunge sensitivities so we find ourselves looking to come up with edgy, dynamic, even emotional songs.” He and his mates, including bassist and Passyunk Square resident Alan Lee, have garnered gigs across the city, including stops at Connie’s and The Legendary Dobbs, 304 South St., where they will play March 8. Musical contacts bred an opportunity to see the South, with the impending journey leading Pitone to ponder the future for Wooden Hez now that it has made its recording splash. “It all seems more viable because we have traction and are empowered by knowing more courtesy of the first sessions,” he said. “We’re already at work on another album, and I feel a tremendous pressure to make everything better and fresher.”

Pitone credits The Beatles as pioneers of perfecting pieces that relied on innovation and evolution. Though he counts the Liverpool lads as influences, he aims for a sound more reminiscent of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, who both played at Dobbs in their formative years, and has heard his threesome likened to them and alternative rock mainstays Dinosaur Jr. and The Flaming Lips. “I can see how those comparisons apply, and I appreciate them,” he said. “However, we’re looking for distinction as Wooden Hez, not as people who sound like someone else.” A NEW JERSEY native, Pitone completed his legal preparation at Rutgers School of Law and has handled projects for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court as a writer. The parents of two girls, ages 14 and 12, he and wife Jane Fitzgerald, a teacher at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., settled in Queen Village nearly two decades ago, with the former figure finding the area conducive to creative endeavors. “I do consider myself primarily a writer,” Pitone, with a penchant for poetry, said of his preferred passion. “I gravitated toward writing through my law background and have used it to navigate my way through

numerous situations.” As a sought-after editor, he has brightened prospects for those with cinematic ambitions yet has taken a break from that task to work on his own figurative tale, which essentially began three years ago at South Street’s Lickety Split. “I attended an open mic there and thought I could become a competent guitarist and songwriter,” Pitone, who prior to that epiphany had dabbled with his current instrument and the piano, said. He began playing acoustic originals at the venue shortly after and found a few local music makers to jam with in 2011. Tinkering with his works’ identity, they replaced his gentle treatments with edgy arrangements, with Pitone, who abandoned the idea of setting his poems to music, proud of the alterations’ ability to help him and his peers to pursue greater cohesion. “I would say the songs were strong from the beginning and that we perhaps struggled with a bit of individualism before we emerged as a whole,” the founder, who has had to part with a few collaborators, said of the band, which began as “South” and now bears a name whose second half is Spanish for “dregs,” “scum” and “sediment” to reflect its affinity for grunge.

Pitone esteems Lee’s ample stage and recording experience as a solidifying element of their ambition and the motivation for last fall’s self-produced work. “I’d wanted to record for some time, and by the time we did, it felt like it was a dam that was ready to burst because I was so enthused,” he said. Now that he has ruptured the figurative barrier, Pitone, whose spring also will involve an appearance at Mount Holly, N.J.’s Hebe Music, is maintaining an upbeat mentality while not neglecting the uncertain life that playing strings could help to compose. “We’ve had great feedback so far,” the frontman said, mentioning positive reviews of “Children’s Parade” and a prominent ranking on the Philly alternative charts at ReverbNation.com, a website that focuses on spotlighting independent acts. “We are enthused about the tour and will probably play in Philly once a month or every other month as we improve even more. With music, nothing is guaranteed but we’re looking to make our names known.” SPR Visit woodenhez.com. Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Why I’d use drones, too

I

much like playing a video game. We are killing folks we don’t even see. But those targeted are overwhelmingly terrorists. By using drones, we don’t put American soldiers in harm’s way. There would be no American bombers shot down by anti-aircraft fire and no American soldiers killed storming an enemy stronghold. I find that fact cheering, not morally bankrupt. I am happy we have a tool that lowers the casualty rate on our side and minimizes the deaths of innocent civilians on their side. I have even seen those on the other side of the argument cite the cost to produce drones as an argument against their use. The idea that drones are too expensive only holds up if the choice is to use drones or nothing at all to get at the terrorist hierarchy. But that is clearly not the choice, unless we are going to sit back and give the terrorists all of the advantages in this struggle. The choice is between drones or bombers and more troops (or rotating the same group of troops). In the case of building a drone or new bombers, the cost argument falls apart. In the case of using drones rather than our own troops, we cannot minimize the human cost to our troops, both physically and psychologically. I don’t have any trouble defending the spending of more money on drones rather than rotating our already exhausted troops even more times into battle. Another argument against our use of drones is whether we would want drones used against us. We must be honest here. Whether we use drones or not will not affect whether our enemies would use drones against us. You can take it to the bank — if one of our enemies were able to launch a drone attack at us, there would be no great moral debate about it. If they had the capability, the drones would already be flying over Washington, D.C. Our enemies use what they can against us. Our big advantage at this time is our technological ability to target their leadership no matter where they hide. The fact that President Barack Obama is using this advantage should surprise no one because the paramount duty of our president is to preserve and protect American lives. While the right chortles that Obama has copied his terrorism policy from his predecessor George W. Bush, I think the drone policy shows exactly the opposite. Bush got us involved in two costly land wars — Afghanistan and Iraq — Obama is ending that foolish policy and relying more on drones. We played into the terrorists’ hands by launching unpopular invasions of two countries from which we will probably not be able to totally extricate ourselves in our lifetime. I’d rather use drones. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

“True Grit” and “Tron: Legacy” star, Jeff Bridges, produced the documentary, “A Place at the Table,” which spotlights the hunger crisis.

Hungry for more By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

W

ith so many “issue” documentaries being cranked out annually, it’s easy to be suspicious of certain films’ validity, not to mention picky in regard to whether or not they’re worth your time. “A Place at the Table,” a hunger-crisis doc from the distributors of “Food, Inc.,” falls somewhere in the middle of the scale, putting the spotlight on an urgent, provocative topic, but revealing banalities and lapses in good taste along the way. Directed by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush, and produced by Tom Colicchio (“Top Chef”) and Jeff Bridges (who’s been championing hunger prevention for decades), the movie points out that 50 million Americans, many of them children, don’t know from where they’re going to get their next meal. Using their creation as a call for action, the filmmakers make a strong case for U.S. policy change on food availability (certain subjects in rural towns have next to no produce access) and deftly combat the controversial stigma surrounding government handouts (regardless of who deserves them, food stamp allowances are near-impossible to live on). “A Place at the Table” certainly aims to make you feel as though you’ve gained ample insight, and some of its subjects, like native Philadelphian and struggling single mom Barbie, put a genuine, cheerworthy human face on the crisis. But it’s also another nonfiction movie that bombards one with statistics and countless talking-head experts, the mess of which occasionally adds up to a lack of cohesion and coherence. It’s a tactic that, at this point, is beyond formulaic, and the excess, in all its strained force, has a way of crip-

pling the central argument. In general, the film falls short of being remarkable, checking off the documentary must-haves instead of transcending them. Opening aerial shots of landscapes boast epic promise, but that’s about where the formal beauty ends, and one key figure, a Colorado fifth-grader named Rosie, is permitted to jump the boundary between sympathetic character and cloying sympathy ploy. This is a noble movie that deserves to be seen, but it needed more focus, more finesse and less on its plate.

It couldn’t beat “Brave” for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, but “Wreck-It Ralph” trumps Pixar’s girl-power tale in the newfangled-fun department, offering an immersive world of video game nostalgia, and revealing its titular villain as a redemption-bound teddy bear at heart. Not a great computer-graphics-toon, but a solid, amusing one, “Wreck-It Ralph” includes the voices of John C. Reilly and Jane Lynch. don’t like killing people, but there are exceptions. If someone is going to spend their every waking moment planning to kill Americans, I’m in favor of killing them first. Even if he or she is an American citizen. In my mind, when you kill Americans, you are no longer subject to protection as an American citizen. What you are is a traitor, an enemy combatant. You are no different than the sniper in the jungle aiming to put a bullet in my head. I am going to try and kill you first. We all know war today is not two armies facing each other across the Maginot line. It is terrorists flying a plane into the World Trade Center;someone with a bomb strapped to their chest walking into a crowded market; or a bunch of thugs with Uzis taking over a hotel and slaughtering its guests. This should be obvious to all of us who live in a post-9/11 world, but it is apparently not obvious to the president’s liberal critics. I find myself at odds with folks with whom I normally agree and agreeing with those whose views I normally find loathsome. The United States use of drones is pilloried for reasons that make no sense to me. The critics of our drone policy cite “collateral damage,” a coldblooded military term that aims to desensitize the deaths of innocent civilians. These critics see, in the use of drones, nothing but the deaths of innocent civilians, yet it is the use of drones that reduces those deaths. I am not being cute here. We can argue about the degree of accuracy of drones, but when we compare it to the usual tools of war like bombing or a raid on a village, is there any doubt that drones are more efficient in destroying our target with less innocent death than either bombs or raids? I am not saying that we shouldn’t scrutinize our drone policy or that we should, in any way, be casual about any civilian deaths. We should tighten the controls on how and whom we target. We cannot ignore that when we inadvertently kill innocents, we create new terrorists. But is that any less the case when we use other methods of killing in war? And if that method actually kills fewer innocents, then how logical is the argument that we are creating more terrorists by using drones? There is much chagrin over the fact that we direct the drones from remote sites,

oseph Russo, like many others, craves a hearty Italian sandwich on a Saturday afternoon or evening. But when the native of 21st and McClellan streets prepares his Sausage Medley, he knows there is a very good chance things could get a little messy. The offering has been shared through the years with his friends and family, and the Aldan resident, now is passing it on for all of South Philly to enjoy. For those fearing the idea of a steadily dripping sandwich, just have plenty of napkins nearby and savor every bite. SPR

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

2 pounds of Italian (sweet or hot) sausage 8 Italian rolls 1 sweet onion, sliced Enough oil to coat the bottom of a pan 1 or 2 green bell peppers, sliced Salt and pepper, to taste White button mushrooms, to taste, sliced Tomato sauce, to taste

Sauté and brown the sausage in a large pan or skillet until done. Remove sausage from the pan and either keep at hot dog-length or cut into 1-inch pieces. Pour the oil in the pan and sauté the onions and peppers until translucent and soft. Add the mushrooms and sausage and stir. Mix in the tomato sauce. Heat the mixture thoroughly, add the salt and pepper and serve on rolls. Comment at southphillyreview.com/food-and-drink/recipes.

Fratelli’s returns to Center City, offering a variety of Italian-American dishes. S ta f f P h o t o b y G r e g B e z a n i s

Edward always enjoys a plain veal cutlet. He does not care for sauce or cheese on top because he feels it detracts from the flavor of the veal. His dinner ($22.50) consisted of a slice of veal pounded paper thin, coated in crumbs and quickly fried. I thought it was dry, but he liked it. The aforementioned vegetables also were included in his entrée. Service was excellent throughout dinner. Our server knew the menu, answered our questions and offered distinct descriptions of several dishes. However, I was a bit disappointed with the menu. I hoped Fratelli’s would be more upscale, with interesting twists on = Very Good

hen the Marathon Grill, 1339 Chestnut St., suddenly closed months ago, I knew someone would open a restaurant at this prime location. I was surprised to discover Fratelli’s Italian Bistro as the new tenant because I remember its days at 17th and Spruce streets. I’m not sure Center City needed another Italian restaurant, especially since Fratelli’s opened across the street from the Olive Garden. Still, I was curious about the menu and wanted to see if a few dishes had what it took to tempt my taste buds. Edward and I hopped on the bus on a bitterly cold night. At Fratelli’s, two women greeted us at the door, checked our coats and showed us to a roomy booth. The interior has not changed much since its Marathon days. There’s a well-lit bar with two televisions, hanging lights and red leather booths near large windows affording a view of the happening Chestnut Street scene. We settled in and glanced over the wine list, deciding on a bottle of Santa Christina Sangiovese ($29). Its rich, robust flavor enhanced our Italian fare quite nicely. Our server brought us some cool Italian bread and softened butter. Then we began dinner with a Caesar salad and eggplant rolatine ($9.50 each). Bite-size pieces of romaine were crisp and cool, but the salad lacked flavor. A sprinkling of salt and pepper helped it a bit, but this was less than mediocre.

The rolatine consisted of two slices of not-at-all bitter eggplant filled with fresh, creamy ricotta cheese, rolled up and topped with a fresh homemade tomato sauce. This dish imparted a light flavor, but I think a few fresh herbs would have pepped it up. Still, it was tasty and arrived piping hot. I usually enjoy a pasta appetizer portion when dining in an Italian restaurant. Since Fratelli’s does not offer small pasta portions, Edward and I shared the fettuccine Alfredo ($16.50). It’s important to hit the right balance of butter, cream and Parmesan cheese in this famous Rome creation. Fratelli’s version was OK, but it lacked depth in flavor. I sprinkled on a little grated Parmesan, which added a slightly salty flavor that the pasta needed. Fratelli’s offers a list of fresh fish that can be either grilled or pan-seared and comes with a choice of sauces. In Italy, grilled fish is topped with a little wine, olive oil and chopped fresh herbs. Fratelli’s is an Italian-American restaurant so sauces, especially for the pasta, run the American gamut of brandy cream to simple fresh tomato. I chose tuna Livornese ($21.50), a classic dish of seared tuna topped with a rich, slightly chunky tomato sauce and laced with olives and sautéed onions. It was pretty tasty, and the fish was seared medium and not overcooked. A few pencil-thin grilled asparagus and roasted potatoes encrusted with sea salt were fanned out on the plate.

hile East Passyunk Av- a feast at a discounted rate. enue Restaurant Week is At Paradiso, 1627 E. Passyunk wrapping up Saturday, Ave., owner/chef Lynn Rinaldi there is still time to enjoy is featuring her dessert, Cinnamon Bomboloni, which is on her regular menu as well, replacing zeppoli with ricotta filling two years ago. “When they get served, everyone around them is, ‘Oh, it smells so good,’” the resident of 17th and Porter streets, who also own Izumi, 1601 E. Passyunk Ave., with husband Corey Baver, said. Rinaldi has worked in restaurants most of her life. While a café owner at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, she attended culinary school part time in her lateChef Lynn Rinaldi 20s. Upon graduating, she scoped the city for a location for what now Pardiso is Paradiso. Owner: Lynn Rinaldi and “It was like every time I walked Corey Baver into a place it didn’t seem right Opened in 2004 until I walked in here,” she said 1627 E. Passyunk Ave. of the restaurant near her 12th215-271-2066 and-Dickinson-streets childhood paradisophilly.com home.

INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup of warm water 5 teaspoons of yeast 3/4 cup of milk 1 stick of butter 3-1/4 cups of sugar 6 cups of flour plus more for needed consistency 1 teaspoon of salt 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg 4 eggs 4 to 6 cups of olive oil

DIRECTIONS: Place the water in a small bowl and sprinkle the yeast on top. Measure 1-1/4 cups of sugar and add a 1/2 teaspoon of it to the bowl. Stir to dissolve the yeast. Set aside and allow the yeast to proof until foamy, for about 4 minutes. Heat the milk and butter in a saucepan until the butter melts. Using an electric mixer’s paddle attachment, combine the flour, salt,

nutmeg, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and the remaining 1-1/4 cup of sugar thoroughly in a bowl. Make a well in the center of the dough and add the yeast and milk mixtures and eggs. Beat on medium until a smooth dough forms. Replace the paddle with the dough hook, and beat on low, adding additional flour to make a smooth, soft, somewhat elastic dough. Increase to medium and mix for about two minutes. Turn the dough into a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm area to allow the dough to rise until doubled, about 2 hours. Gently deflate the dough by pulling it from the bowl and turn it onto a floured surface. Roll the dough to about a 1/2-inch thick-

ness. Using a fluted or plain-edged round cutter, cut doughnuts 1- to 1-1/2-inch in diameter. Dust them with the flour, place on a baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap and allow to proof. Heat 6 inches of olive oil to 360 degrees in a large, heavy-bottomed pot. Fry four to five doughnuts at a time, gently turning them until they are golden brown on both sides and cooked in the center. Drain the doughnuts on paper towels. Combine the remaining 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and 2 cups of sugar and roll the warm doughnuts in it. Happy Birthday to our beautiful boy in heaven. We celebrate your day because it was one of our most special days. The day you were given to me, you came in as quiet as a lamb and lived your short life in an abundance of love. You will be forever loved and missed, the bond between Mother and Son is a special one, it remains unchanged by time or distance. It is the purest love, unconditional and true. The bond between Mother and Son lasts a lifetime ever eternal. So with this my son you will always be in my heart. Rest my boy, your Mommy loves you! THE GAME SET upp as a statistician’s dream come true, as Arrigale and Prep rep coach William “Speedy”” Morris, for whom he played yed two seasons at Penn n Charter, entered with h eight titles each, and each ch team dressed two 1,000-point 0-point scorers, Newton and senior forward John Davis for the Saints and senior forward Miles Overton and senior guard Stephen Vasturia, the two-time MVP, for the Hawks. After the first quarter, though, gh, Newton cared only nly about one digit, 10, 0, which represented ed n, his unit’s cushion, as the Saints used a well-balanced at-tack that saw five players score. Newton led with six, including a buzzer-beating three-ball that momentarily quieted the Prep student section. The boisterous area again earnestly began the pleas for an upset in the second frame frame, as perimeter shots found the twine. Newton and Davis, a three time first-team honoree and a resident of Fifth Street and Washington Avenue, though, treated the rock as if it were a security blanket with which they could not part, tallying all 13 of their unit’s points. While earning an interior bucket midway through the quarter, Davis, a Towson University signee who would score 11 points and grab as many rebounds, lost his

Hungering for a victory, the junior sniper then scored 27 points to lead the Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School Saints, 1736 S. 10th St., to a 60-42 triumph over the game, yet overmatched St. Joe’s Prep Hawks at the Palestra. His thrilling effort combined with his teammates’ tenacity to secure their East Passyunk Crossing site’s fifth-straight Catholic League boys’ basketball crown and sent a message to those who had thought regular-season setbacks might foreshadow postseason disappointment. “People threw a few funerals for us this year,” Arrigale, of the 2900 block of South 15th Street, said of his celebrating ballers, citing Jan. 7’s road loss to La Salle College High School that snapped their 73-game winning streak against parochial opponents and Feb. 10’s nationally televised drubbing by Chester High School as detractors’ main material. “Luckily, I got a group of tough kids who put their minds to bouncing back and earning another title.” The Chester debacle dealt them their fifth defeat, the most for an Arrigale-led squad since the 2007-’08 unit dropped 10 contests, but prompted them to work harder. The Saints clobbered Bishop McDevitt 85-54 in Feb. 15’s home quarterfinal and blasted Archbishop Carroll 57-34 at the University of Pennsylvania’s famed venue Feb 20. Returning there for the final, they desired to designate the Prep, whom they made a 67-43 casualty Jan. 14, as the runner-up for the second year running. NoveNas PRAYERS NoveNas novena to the holy spirit

Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads, so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life You are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank You for all things as You confirm once again that I never want to be separated from You even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with You in eternal glory. Thank You for your mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days and after three days the favor will be granted. The prayer must be published immediately.

C.M.S

sacred heart of jesus

never fail novena

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world, now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, have mercy on us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day for eight days and your prayer will be answered. Publication must be promised. J.H
