ennie DiGiandomenico bore a radiant smile Monday morning as she fraternized with friends during a nutrition workshop at the Marconi Older Adult Program, 2433 S. 15th St. The ladies delighted in having the chance to chat, a custom they had enjoyed at their former

haunt, the Samuel S. Fels South Philadelphia Community Center, 2407 S. Broad St. The group had been left stranded without a gathering place to call their home away from home as the Caring People Alliance sold the latter building in late June to the Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School, 2600 S. Broad St., for $1.7 million to counter a debt dilemma. Through an agreement with St. Monica parish, 17th and Ritner streets,

they have spent the last two weeks reconnecting and expecting new experiences. “For us, it’s like having a place to call home again,” DiGiandomenico, of the 2400 block of South Opal Street, said of the 42-year-old facility that became their secondary abode March 6. “We all tried other locations after the closing, but caSee MARCONI page 10 >>

Word on the Street How will the proposed plan to raise SEPTA fares in July affect you? “I think it’s unfair. The current economic system is not very fair as it is, and this is just too much. Inez Brown. Broad and Wolf streets “It won’t affect me because I am a senior citizen. Even if I had to pay more, I would continue using SEPTA. I am SEPTA’s biggest fan. Susan Carnott, 22nd and Tasker streets “The rise in fares is forcing me to drive to work instead. It will almost cost just as much as it would to drive anyway. I think they are going to lose a lot of business from this. Michael Testa Broad Street and Snyder Avenue “It’s going to affect my money. I am already giving them my money every day — about $3 to $4 dollars a day. I think it’s about freaking corruption and the increase in gas prices. Sam Ing, 15th and Tasker streets

Behavior etiquette

To the Editor: The other day, while I was standing in line at a department store, a young women burst through the line. She demanded that the cashier take her in front of the five others that stood waiting before her. She proceeded to perform and argue with the cashier when the employee asked her to move to the back of the line. I had never seen someone act so rude. Showing respect goes a long way. We as women, young ladies and mothers need to demonstrate appropriate behaviors as people. We need to be kind to one another. Women need to treat each other better. We need to get it together. Frances Nichols South Philadelphia

Nothing against Frank To the Editor: I don’t get it. On the one hand, Frank [Cavallaro] [“What’s both-

@

ering Frank, Feb. 28] speaks about the sport of hockey and how unnecessary violence “tears the heart from me in its cruel and callous hardheartedness, and how sportsmen “kill unsuspecting and innocent animals mostly for sport; yet, on the other hand, he finds that it would be “fun if “instead of hanging or electrocuting felons, [we] let them loose in the woods and give hunters a field day Really Frank? Not cruel or callous? I guess he never heard it said that “a society is only as good as it treats the worst of its citizens. But then he concludes by saying, “one day, I sincerely hope all of mankind will have hearts. Well, today I’ve been inspired. I decided that I would be more compassionate and have a bigger heart. And I will start by not holding anything against Frank. Richie Marra South Philadelphia

Wrong angle parking To the Editor: While I am in favor of angled parking to get rid of double parking, it seems that some streets on the west side of Broad park at a different angle then the ones on the east side. They back into their spots which makes it more difficult. Isn’t it easier to just pull into a spot and then just back out? Also it looks better with cars parked with their fronts to the sidewalk and takes up less space than with the back ends protruding out. There also is less chance of someone sideswiping a car as they try to back in. Just a thought. Surveillance video

ocated within a mile of one another, a pharmacy in Passyunk Square, East Passyunk Crossing and Lower Moyamensing were held up between Feb. 11 and March 6. Police released surveillance video of each incident last week. Most recently, an armed offender wearing a black mask walked into Walgreens, 2655 S. 10th St., at 11 a.m. March 6 while his accomplice waited outside in a green minivan or SUV, according to police. The former pointed his weapon at the employees and said, “Give me all the drugs.” The workers handed over an unknown amount of Adderall, and the robber left the store, hopped inside the vehicle and fled east on Oregon Avenue and south on Hutchinson Street. Eight days earlier, two men entered Zevin’s Drug Store Inc., 800 McKean St., at 11:15 a.m. and ordered the employees to lie on the floor, according to police. One of the armed men forced its manager to the store’s office area where he forced him to hand over Percocet and Oxycontin as well as money. He placed the stolen goods — an unknown amount of the requested drugs and $200 — in a maroon duffle bag with tan handles and fled, along with his accomplice, westbound on McKean Street. The pair first struck at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 11 at Bertolino’s Pharmacy, 1500 S. 12th St., where the pair ordered the owner and several customers to the ground before raiding the register and narcotics cabinet. They fled north on 12th with an unknown amount of narcotics, cigarettes and cash. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Questioning leads to answer The alleged shooter who gunned down a West Passyunk man as his young son looked on in a Girard Estate parking lot was taken into custody Sunday. Jahmir Harris, 23, of the 1600 block of South Ringgold Street, was taken to Police Headquarters for questioning after a witness identified him, according to police. He subsequently was arrested for allegedly killing Louis Porter, 45, of the 1900 block of South Bonsall Street. Porter parked his vehicle in the parking lot at Walgreens, 2310 W. Oregon Ave., but as he and his 5-year-old son walked to the store at 8:16 p.m. Dec. 23, 2012, Harris allegedly pulled up, stepped out of his auto and rapidly fired 17 shots toward Porter, who tried to back away, police said. The victim’s son, who was unscathed physically, ran to someone in the parking lot. His father, however, received a wound to his left wrist, two to his left arm and several additional ones to his head, which caused severe brain damage and eventually led to his death a week later at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to police. Harris was charged with murder, conspiracy, firearm violations and possession of an instrument of a crime, according to court records.

No comic relief

Surveillance video A pair of robbers broke into a Bella Vista comic book store, taking memorabilia and money. Eric Lewis, 32, of the 5500 block of Catharine Street, allegedly shattered the front window of Atomic City Comics, 638 South St., at 4:50 a.m. March 2 and began rummaging through the merchandise, placing certain items in a large red sack, according to police. Another unknown man joined him, and the pair looted the store for about an hour before fleeing the

POLICE REPORT location in unknown directions. Police, who are seeking assistance to identify the second thief, responded to the scene for a reported disturbance, police said. Upon arrival, the responding officer spotted Lewis, who matched the description of one of the offenders, and was arrested on the 600 block of South Ninth Street. He was charged with burglary, trespassing, conspiracy, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief, according to court records. Lewis posted a percentage of his $5,000 bail March 3. The other perpetrator was described as a male of an unknown race, stocky; having short, dark-colored hair; and wearing a dark-colored hoodie, dark-colored pants, dark-colored sneakers and a baseball cap. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Troublesome threesome

Crime wasn’t on the list A man thought he was purchasing an iPad off of craigslist, but the seller deceived and robbed him in Girard Estate. The 27-year-old arrived on the 1900 block of Shunk Street at 10:15 p.m. March 6 to meet the man with whom he arranged the transaction, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man, whose ad he saw on craigslist, walked to the driver’s side of his vehicle, at which point another man hopped in his auto on the passenger’s side, held him at gunpoint with a small firearm and demanded his belongings. The duo fled on foot in an unknown direction with the man’s credit cards, ID, two cell phones and $1,900. The initial offender was described as black, in his 30s, thin and wearing a brown leather jacket, while the armed offender was described as black, in his 30s; having a medium build; and wearing a dark-colored hooded jacket. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Surveillance video A man robbed a Girard Estate cell phone store and its employee of her phone. The thief entered Metro PCS, 2121 W. Oregon Ave., at 3:55 p.m. March 10 to inquire about cell phones, but once all of the other customers had left, he put his hand in his pocket, making it appear that he had a gun. As he walked around the counter, he said to the 18-year-old employee, “Give me all the money,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He swiped $700 and the woman’s phone and said, “Don’t call the police” before he fled westbound on 22nd Street. Two men robbed a West Passyunk store, holding two 12-year-old girls at gunpoint in the process Saturday afternoon. Three armed men entered Wendy’s Food Corner, 2101 S. 22nd St., at 4:15 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Two of the offenders jumped the counter while the third man, who carried a silver firearm, stood as a lookout at the front door. Behind the counter, one of the men asked where to find the money, Tolliver said. After a 38-year-old female employee opened the register, the thief grabbed $300. Meanwhile the other thief took an iPhone and wallet from a 21-year-old male and an iPad from a 12-year-old girl. The same man then pointed his gun at the other 12-year-old girl, who had her hands in her pockets, and commanded her to empty her pockets, which were empty. The first offender insisted on more money from the woman, but she said she didn’t have any more, Tolliver said. The lookout said, “Let’s go,” and the pair jumped over the counter, but before they fled, the first offender snatched the woman’s iPhone and 30 SEPTA tokens from the counter. The trio fled westbound on Snyder Avenue and northbound on Croskey Street, Tolliver said. The first robber was described as black, age 30, 5-foot-8; having a medium build; and wearing a gray hoodie, black mask and black gloves while the other was described as black, 5-foot-10, thin and wearing a dark-colored hoodie, blue jeans, a black mask and black gloves. The lookout was described as black, age 23, 5-foot10, thin and wearing a black hoody, black pants and a black mask. A stellar speller A Passyunk Square school student spelled her way to glory at a regional competition. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

s a voracious reader, especially of the “Harry Potter” tomes, Nina McManus, 14, enjoys coming to understand literary techniques. The eighth-grader at Christopher Columbus Charter School, 1242-46 S. 13th St., received a non-book-based yet nonetheless captivating example of irony March 9 at the West Philly-based School of the Future when her successful spelling of “degenerative,” meaning “leading to decline,” caused her to exult and judges to exalt her as the 19th Scripps Regional Spelling Bee winner. She will look to duplicate her letter levity at May’s national competition in Maryland. “I had handled most of the others with little delay, and when I heard that one, I felt very good,” the Southwest Philadelphian said of the triumph-inducing word. “When I finished, I was really excited. I still am, actually.” The term became her 26th correctly recited challenge and helped her to beat 62 other spellers representing area institutions, all conquerors of their facilities’ individual duels. As it derives from Latin, which, along with Greek, she deemed the easiest of her 14 studied languages, Nina needed no time to ponder it and garnered a dictionary, laptop and trophy for her diligence. “She is an exceptional, well-rounded student, and we’re so proud of her,” seventh- Nina McManus will strive grade teacher Bernadette Parker said. to add another trophy The Northeast Philly resident and Pennsport to her Southwest st Phill native began prepping her Passyunk Square home in May. pupils last school year at the suggestion of S ta f f P h o t o b y Principal Rosemary Dougherty. Nina meshed Greg Bezanis Parker’s guidance with her own commitment as a seventh-grader to win her site’s chap- of pressure despite her preparation, which ter and advance to the regional final. alternate pronunciations and sentences containing the utterances. For Nina, the first element of that triad helped the most, as it enabled her to determine which posed declarations had silent letters and double consonants, among other characteristics. “I was thrilled that they varied the picks,” the child, whose academic identity also includes a mix of interests thanks to a love of mathematics, science, reading and, of course, spelling, said. “That made it more interesting and challenging.” With thoughts of surpassing last year’s efforts as partial motivation, Nina watched the number of challengers dwindle yet focused only on her tasks. She numbered “begonia,” an eponym honoring Michel Bégon, a French patron of science, and “tantalize,” a

derivative of the Greek king Tantalus, whose afterlife punishment involved not being able to eat or drink items within his reach, as easier words and “pfeffernuss,” a biscuit often adorned with ground nuts and popular in Germany and the Netherlands, as a difficult one. “I loved watching her process the words,” Parker said. “It was really rewarding to see the care she took.” That wherewithal intensified as she and Amir S. Lewis, an eighth-grader at West Oak Lane’s Gen. Louis Wagner Middle School, became the final fighters for spelling supremacy. The boy misspelled “lozenge” yet Nina could not capitalize and tripped up on “alacrity,” meaning “willingness.” When Amir then could not master “mossery,” a place where mosses grow, his female counterpart confidently spelled “cubit,” a unit of length, and “degenerative” to cause her matriarch to hold back tears of joy. “I knew I had a very good chance to win, but to be the actual winner, wow, that was a welcome part of the day,” Nina said from her school, whose enrollees have joined with Parker in esteeming the youngster. “Even a few days later, I’m still overwhelmed and will love representing Christopher Columbus Charter School in two months.” All of the winners will arrive in Oxon Hill, Md., May 26 to prepare for the competition that will open two days later at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. Not quite two weeks after her regional revelry, she has given herself a little break from analyzing prefixes, suffixes and other common bugaboos but soon will set herself to steadying any nerves and readying her resolve for what she envisions as the most powerful test of her spelling might. “Everyone will be just as prepared as me, so it will be much harder,” she said. “This might sound funny but if I make it far, I know I’ll be on the televised part of the competition. I want to win but if I don’t, at least it will be neat to be on television.” As she reflects on her journey, Nina knows many of the words she has studied could become fixtures of her vernacular, so she has added a few to her vocabulary. In summing up how spelling has put her under its spell, she noted its ability to make her more worldly. “If you can speak well, you can write well and speak well,” she said, “and I’m working on all three.” SPR

MARCONI continued from page 1 maraderie and comfort were lacking.” The Girard Estate resident had attended Fels for five years before its repurposing as an educational institution for kindergarteners through fifth-graders. Her prior spot had suffered severe financial burdens for years, with Caring People needing to subsidize offerings through its other locations’ returns. Minus the 43,000-square-foot haven’s amenities, DiGiandomenico and her peers tried finding solace at Center City’s Philadelphia Senior Center; the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center, 1430 E. Passyunk Ave.; the St. Charles Senior Center, 1941 Christian St.; and the Tolentine Community Center, 1025-33 Mifflin St. When Shawna Lisa, who headed the older adult programming at Fels, learned late last month of the endowment of a Licenses & Inspections-issued Certificate of Occupancy, she found herself thrilled to be able to reunite with the affable attendees. “I’m so happy our members again can explore real friendships, relationships and services,” the senior project director and resident of the 900 block of Dudley Street said as three such figures used treadmills. “We knew with our hiatus that some of them might moan and groan and adopt a sour attitude, but we have not heard any griping, as everyone is ecstatic about resuming.” Following the Fels matter, the East Passyunk Crossing dweller assisted with painting and scrubbing the new destination, which her employer has been renting from St. Monica, which had used it as a day care, to aid afterschool pupils from PPACS; Abraham S. Jenks Academic Plus, 2501 S. 13th St.; and St. Pio Regional Catholic School, 1826 Pollock St. Making the space wheelchair accessible, giving the fitness equipment professional checkups and changing the tiny toilets and sinks also factored into the refashioning process. “It’s been a true labor of love,” Caring People President and CEO Arlene Bell, who interacted with nearly 90 participants on the inaugural day, said. “For our members, it’s all about sustaining social bonds. We knew how much they missed one another; therefore, we’re happy to have them back and are gearing up to give them the best slate of options. The way I see it, relationships will continue to blossom as our identity as a center grows.” THE PROGRAM’S MISSION statement aims to have workers provide a “full and active life for members, enjoyable recreational and educational activities, an opportu-

nity for friendships to grow and deepen, a support system for members with special needs and assistance to other organizations with similar goals for the betterment of all older adults.” With 16,000 square feet to accomplish those quests, they have loaded their schedule with such helpers as arts and crafts workshops, clubs, lectures, line dancing, trips, Wii games and zumba and connect members with numerous social services, including the low income home energy assistance program and the Caring Paws Visiting Pet program. “Our fitness area has already proven to be a big draw,” Lisa said. “Just like at Fels, they are also attracted to billiards and board games.” Having received its funding from the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging March 1, the program has begun to reach out to those sites that served its members during the interim to reestablish its population of approximately 750 members. Lisa noted that has gone well and looks forward to welcoming more individuals no matter their interests.

“We’re confident we have something for everyone,” she said. “The best part is that if someone walks in today and desires to join, we could have him or her experiencing time here right away.” That all aspects came together so quickly and efficiently impressed DiGiandomenico. “I’ll come two or three times a week because I really enjoy the exercise, the social programs, trips, shows, mural tours, whatever,” the enthused registrant, who also bulks up her civic identity through participation in the South Philadelphia Lions Club, said. “For [the suggested price of] $25 a year, $50 for the fitness room, where are you going to go to find all that?” As senior program coordinator Lee Fass led her and her companions in designing a spinach salad with clementines, cranberry raisins, goat cheese and walnuts as part of the fruit and vegetable of the month presentation, DiGiandomenico also noted how pleased she is the new two-story site likely will follow its predecessor as an intoxicating place for residents within and

beyond the confines of South Philly. “We like to think of ourselves as a microcosm of the world,” Lisa said, adding the benefits of interaction between children and adults under her roof. Meals mark key components of breaking bread at the facility, which has taken on the same name that referred to one element of Fels’ multi-faceted outreach. As the weather becomes more enticing, Lisa hopes to welcome more enrollees to engage in fellowship and, as part of Older Adult Month, will gather the gang for an official grand opening May 18 in the site’s spacious yard. “We’ve retained most of our Fels offerings, with swimming as a big exception, and we’re coming along fine,” Lisa said. “Older adults drive communities, and we’re happy to sustain their liveliness and receive some from them, too.” SPR

s the mother of two thriving girls, Erin Flynn Jay never finds herself short on joy. Like any provider, though, she also worries about managing schedules and finances in order to increase that pride. The Hawthorne resident last year analyzed working matriarchs’ struggles by writing “Mastering the Mommy Track: Juggling Career and Kids in Uncertain Times,” which is contending for self-help distinction in the Small Business Book Awards competition. “The Great Recession really has brought on many professional challenges,” the 41-year-old said of the global economic downturn that has hampered households for more than five years. “Because I knew, and continue to know, struggling families, I decided to go forth with this project.” She commenced crafting what would become a 197-page product two years ago, using a poem whose author detailed the devastation of unemployment, especially its effects on rearing her grandson, as inspiration. For Jay, who

for 12 years has run an eponymous communications firm offering public relations and copywriting services, the task meant promoting fellow females’ successful navigation through various roles and responsibilities, and she addresses them over 12 chapters divided into four areas, home, health, parenting and work-life. “There are personal elements to it,” Jay said of references to Jason, her husband of six years, and their 3- and 5-year-old daughters, “but it’s not a memoir. I focus on motherly struggles and offer solutions from experts.” The lifelong scribe, who yearned as a girl to be a news reporter, completed her piece early last year and landed a United Kingdom-based publisher to oversee it for fall distribution. She engaged in a month-long virtual tour to gain exposure for her debut volume and has participated in signings, with this Sunday’s appearance at the Center City-situated Mama’s Wellness Joint and March 28’s stop at the University of Pennsylvania Bookstore looking to up her current sale total of 400 copies. “I viewed writing it as a hobby and not necessarily a moneymaking activity,” Jay said of evening composition of the guide, whose target audience, according to her

website, consists of “working mothers with young kids, and those who are unemployed or underemployed.” As her own abode has needed to overcome financial fluctuation, too, she chronicled the wonders and woes of breadwinners and downtrodden figures through extensive interviews and meticulous research. Confident in the output, she nominated her creation for the national contest’s fifth edition in January and has been seeking votes at bookawards.smallbiztrends.com ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. Up against numerous wordsmiths in her category, with the top five entrants to receive awards, Jay is hoping her offering’s emphasis on perseverance, healthy relationships and strong support systems will garner her a victory. If she cannot come to call herself a winner in a new sense, she will proudly reflect on her present triumph as a loving mother and wife. “I’ve come to a greater self-awareness,” she said of lessons learned from her endeavor. “I’ve also realized even more how much I enjoy being self-employed and am looking to network with mothers and anyone else with a message.” JAY HAS MADE making such connections the chief element of her professional iden-

tity. The New Jersey native began as an English major at the University of Scranton before switching to communications, a move that came to yield a penchant for public relations, which she tabs her “bread and butter.” She established herself as a reliable freelancer as a 10-year New York City resident, including a stint with careerbuilder.com, a consultant who booked tours and speaking engagements for authors and a customizer of training programs for Fortune 500 clients. “People have said I’m a strong writer, but I just see what I do as a product of my relentless drive to cull information from people and explore numerous topics, including the frustration I explore in ‘Mastering the Mommy Track,’” Jay, who also is a blogger for MetroKids, said. Ready for a change, she flocked to South Philly in 2007, the Great Recession’s tumultuous first year. Having founded her firm six years prior, she made the move from one intimidating metropolis to another with a solid clientele list and strong awareness of less fortunate women and their often destitute situations and burdens, such as depression, nonsupportive mates and poverty. As the economic doldrums intensified for strangers, family members and even her own livelihood

through the loss of a large client, Jay felt an urge to extend her nonfiction infatuation beyond her communications and public relations duties. Originally drawn to transplantation as a topic because of a family member’s status as a recipient, she shifted her focus as her maternal maturation progressed and spent seven months devoting her spare time to understanding how to maximize her main moments as a worker, partner and mother. “The process of writing a book was exciting, with the primary aims being to give mothers reminders of their worth, their need for respect and their roles as bearers and upholders of life,” Jay said. She has enjoyed her South Philly residence, especially for her neighborhood’s tremendous amount of growth and improved identity as a spot for families. As she awaits word on the competition, she knows that like all matriarchs in her area and beyond, she must be willing to listen and adapt. “No, I’ve not mastered the mommy track,” she said. “Like everyone else, I’m always learning.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Being dense in Philly Mag

I

my son, I continue to feel both profoundly sad and a blind desire to escape. Though I wonder: Am I allowed to say even that?” He not only said it in eight long pages, but he got paid for saying it. Imagine the unfairness of it all. I got news for Huber and others who think like him. White people aren’t the only ones who are scared going through a high-crime-rate neighborhood. The sadness is that law-abiding minorities are trapped living in drug-infested areas every day — areas where the overwhelming amount of crime is black on black. Let me relate an anecdote from the 1960s: I shared my fears about traveling into the kind of tough area Huber was writing about with a good friend of mine who happened to be an African-American woman. She responded without the slightest hint of sarcasm that she also was afraid traveling into that area. The simple fact Huber misses is the issues he raises aren’t really black-white issues, but economic issues. Maybe Huber should talk more openly with his own neighbors about race because his article would surely have been more enlightening. He’d find that his middle class, minority neighbors, by and large, have the same values he has and share the same hopes and dreams, and yes, even fears. The idea that one way to make “bad” neighborhoods “better” is for white people to offer minorities ideas on how the inner city can get its act together would make a great Chris Rock skit. It also might result in the need for a new set of teeth. I’ve got a feeling Huber ought to be talking to his son to get educated about race relations. The kid is apparently happy living near the Temple campus while Huber craps his pants. Maybe the kid sees the experience differently than his father. I have my own simple set of guidelines for getting along with people who are different thanme. Treat people as people because that’s pretty much what they are. Some you’re going to like and some you’re not (hint — you’ll notice pretty quickly that there are enough idiots in every race and ethnic group, including your own, so if you can sort out the nice ones you’re ahead of the game). When the other person notices you treat them with the same discerning eye that you treat anyone else, a real connection will form. That real connection will not be based on your telling him or her everything you don’t like about their culture unless you allow them to tell you “we can handle it without your advice, so take care of your own problems.” And that, as they say, will be the beginning of a real friendship. Best of all, Philadelphia Magazine will be able to go back to doing what it does best — overrating the restaurants who advertise within its pages. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/

Disgraced Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) leads a rescue mission through the White House.

‘Olympus’ under attack By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

A

full-tilt action flick recalling the sort that used to star guys like Steven Seagal, “Olympus Has Fallen” merges old-school attitude with a chillingly modern premise, making its central crisis a terrorist takeover of the White House. After an opening act that sees the wife of President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) die in a car accident, a casualty that might have been prevented had Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) not been following orders to save the president first, the film leaps forward to 18 months later, then dives headfirst into a riveting attack on our nation’s foremost residence, an act that seems as outlandish as it does unnervingly simple. Relegated to a desk job after the first lady’s death, Banning, an ex-Special Forces brute, slips past the bad guys on the ground level and winds up the nation’s last hope, while most other top officials (including the president and the secretary of defense, played by Melissa Leo) are held hostage inside 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Boasting a rather stellar ensemble, which also includes Morgan Freeman (as the speaker of the house who becomes acting president), Angela Bassett (as the head of the Secret Service), and Dylan McDermott (as a fellow Secret Service agent), “Olympus Has Fallen” is a highly watchable adventure, for its breathless pacing, its no-nonsense toughness (get ready for carnage), and its considerable tinge of dread. But while the film, directed by Antoine Fuqua (whose sole, 12-year-old triumph, “Training Day,” is continually pushed as a promise of quality), doesn’t pretend to have the false prestige of something like “Argo,” it similarly promotes a hoo-ra,

pro-America attitude that, these days, can do much more harm than good. As bad as it may be that the movie basically shows potential enemies how to take the White House, it’s even worse how viciously it demonizes North Koreans, who, through this film’s gaze, are officially the new Taliban. Right down to Banning’s insistence that the terrorists “speak English!” the film unabashedly promotes us-versus-them rage. That might have worked in Seagal’s heyday, but in 2013, it feels awfully regressive.

Recommended Rental Lincoln

PG-13 Available Tuesday

One of the very best films of 2012 (and the one that should have taken home the Best Picture Oscar), Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” features excellence in just about every filmic discipline, with restrained direction from the legendary maestro, an utterly brilliant script from Tony Kushner, evocative photography and production design, an ace performances from a cast that includes Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, and, of course, lead star Daniel Day-Lewis. It may not have walked off with armfuls of trophies, but “Lincoln” should be remembered as one of the great historical biopics. have never met Robert Huber. He might be a nice guy, but Huber just wrote one of the dumbest articles about race relations in Philadelphia — the Philadelphia Magazine cover story called “Being White in Philly.” In essence, here is how I see Huber’s beef: His son is a Temple University student living at 19th and Diamond streets. Huber is scared for his safety. After this article, if I were Huber’s kid, I’d change either my name or address, maybe both. Out of Huber’s concern for his son has emerged an article that makes numerous dubious claims — not the least of which is that race is “a dominant motif in and around our city.” He gives a few anecdotes as if to prove his point (they don’t) and winds up with the incredibly arrogant assertion that in order for “troubled black communities” to be better, “white people have to risk being much more open” about “how the inner city needs to get its act together.” If Huber didn’t tell readers that he lives in racially mixed Mount Airy, a neighborhood he describes friendlier than most, I would have sworn that he had been living under a rock — a suburban rock on a neat lawn surrounded by a white picket fence — since the 1960s. After reading the article, I wonder how Huber has such a superficial understanding of his own neighbors. Perhaps it is unintentional, but he equates the days when “black people knew their place” with today where the situation has been reversed and white people know their place. One is tempted to add it’s still a pretty good place in the power structure for whites even with the first black president (actually mixed race) in the White House and an AfricanAmerican mayor in Philadelphia. This must be the issue Philadelphia Magazine picked to become relevant on social issues other than where to eat on the trendy restaurant scene and whether you can wear white after Labor Day. The March issue, which has a black cover with “Being White in Philly” in bold white letters that promises so much more than the story delivers. What the article does deliver is an unintentional piece of irony that could have been printed as satire in The Onion with very few changes. Imagine after an eight-page cover story ending with these words, “Meanwhile, when I drive through North Philly to visit

Southwark Restaurant’s Chicken Liver Mousse

S

Chef Nick Macri

Southwark Restaurant Owners: Sheri and Kip Waide Opened 2004 701 S. Fourth St. 215-238-1888 southwarkrestaurant.com

heri and Kip Waide opened Southwark Restaurant’s doors in 2004. The latter continues to serve as head bartender while his wife stepped down as executive chef in January to allow her more time to tend to the couple’s two-acre plot of land in Cape May, N.J. where the restaurant retrieves all of its produce during the warmer months. In her absence, the Queen Village restaurant’s former sous chef, Nick Macri, who has worked at Osteria and Farmacia, stepped up in her place. The Toronto, Canada native eventually earned his culinary background at Drexel University where he attended on a soccer scholarship, but the switch to food happened later. “My mother is a chef,” Macri said “I grew up on food.” It wasn’t until he had to pick a major that he began following in

his mother’s footsteps though. “It was kind of a happy accident,” he said. One of the dishes he creates is a charcuterie plate, which contains a variety of meats including Chicken Liver Mousse. However, that specific portion became so popular, it earned its own spot on the Southwark menu. The poultry is obtained from Griggstown Quail Farm and Market in Princeton N.J., but also is available at Headhouse Farmers Market, Second and Lombard streets.

INGREDIENTS: 1 pound of chicken livers, trimmed and spots removed 8 ounces of unsalted butter, cubed 1 white onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and finely chopped 1/2 cup of brandy 2 sprigs of thyme, chopped

S ta f f P h o t o s by Greg Bezanis

1 tablespoon of grape seed or Canola oil 1 tablespoon of salt 1/4 tablespoon of black pepper Grilled bread and pickles

DIRECTIONS: Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed sauté pan over medium. Cook the onions and garlic until lightly colored. Add the livers, salt, pepper and thyme, and cook the livers until browned but still pink in the

center. Remove the mixture from the pan. Return the pan to the burner and deglaze with the brandy, and cook, scraping the pan with wooden spoon, until a syrup forms. Add all of the ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into a serving dish and allow to cool in the refrigerator overnight. Remove from the refrigerator a half-hour before mealtime and serve with grilled bread and pickles. SPR

the star of the dish. The meat was perfectly seasoned and so well braised it literally fell off the bone. It was bursting with rich flavor that stood us in good stead on a cold, windy evening. I assume wine and stock were used here in a fine combination. Even the beans retained a bit of bite. We shared an order of asparagus napped in hollandaise ($5), which was so uncommonly delicious we easily gobbled it up. The sauce never separated on the plate. Lee used thick spears, which I have not seen in the markets, but fine chefs have fine suppliers. We shared apple cake with vanilla ice cream ($7), which was not an overly sweet ending to a fine meal. in a muffin tin and imparted a marvelous cinnamon flavor and aroma. The scoop of ice cream was most generous by the way. Restaurants plan a to-do list before they open. Some fall short on ambience, noise level, service and, of course, the meal. It is obvious Lee and his staff excelled on all levels. Four tips of the toque to Sophia’s. SPR

ast Passyunk Avenue has quickly become the dining destination for those of us who appreciate a fine meal. I think I have eaten in all of the restaurants that have been in business there ever since Tre Scalini first tempted me years ago with authentic Italian family meals. Sophia’s, a charming place that offers new American fare, is the newest addition to East Passyunk Avenue. The man in charge is chef Christopher Lee who instinctively knows how to put a tasty twist on classic dishes, such as cassoulet and paella, and at the same time offers bar fare such as tacos and sliders. Vegetables also take pride of place at Sophia’s, so does first-rate service. Edward and I spent a few hours leisurely dining on three courses and never once did our professional server ever interrupt our conversation. He checked in on us to offer more bread and ask if there was anything else we needed. Sophia’s is lodged in the short-lived Salt & Pepper, which morphed from Rosalena’s. There’s a cozy front room with bar and television, but we opted for the dining room, which was perfectly lit with soft music playing on the sound system. Sophia’s is a white-tablecloth restaurant, but there is nothing formal or stuffy about it. I am often appalled at the price of cocktails and wine in restaurants. We sipped a Hendricks martini ($11) and an expertly prepared Johnnie Walker Black Rob Roy ($10). I actually discovered a bottle of Côtes du Rhône for just $30. Four tips of the toque for charging fair

prices for drinks and wine. A sliced loaf of hot-from-the-oven French bread arrived with whipped butter, and we began dinner with a spinach salad ($9) and Brussels sprouts ($5) from the sides and vegetable list. Baby spinach leaves were mixed with sprigs of frisee, along with crunchy quinoa and sweet cranberries. I really enjoyed the tart yet sweet flavors the berries emitted, especially since the greens were so mild in flavor. I thought the salad was slightly overdressed but Edward did not. It was also nicely seasoned. Our server, thank goodness, did not attack us with the pepper mill. Tiny Brussels sprouts are the ones I seek when I prepare them at home. They are less bitter. Lee roasted them and added pancetta, a now classic combination. Pancetta is unsmoked bacon and the smoky flavor from the sprouts offered a pleasurable high note. Paella ($25) is a dish that is very difficult to prepare in a restaurant. I have been disappointed on so many occasions. Lee hit the mark. Perfectly cooked rice formed the bed for mussels, clams, shrimp, salmon and chorizo, which was served in a large soup bowl. The rice had a crispness on the bottom that is the hallmark of paella. It was not a bit mushy. The fish and shellfish have to be timed properly so each one is not overcooked. Bravo, Lee. You achieved a four-star dish. Cassoulet ($22) is a French classic always prepared with beans and usually includes sausages and duck. Lee performed a culinary twist and made a lamb shank

t first glance Sukuma Wiki may look like a confusing dish, but after a little research, this basic recipe seems like a perfect side for most entrées. This East-African dish means “stretch of the week” in Swahili, as it is made to last for an entire week’s worth of meals. Laura Okidi, of the 2400 block of South 11th Street, is sharing her version of this ethnic offering, which she suggests serving with a favorite meat or fish dish. Based on the good-for-more-than-one-night concept, this recipe may be a keeper. SPR

Bace M. Shuey March 24, 1913 • December 13, 1999

If roses grow in Heaven Lord Please pick a bunch for me. Place them in my Mother’s arms and tell her they’re from me. Tell her I love her and miss her, and when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while. Because remembering her is easy, I do it everyday, But there is an ache within my heart That will never go away.

R OSE F ERARRA 7-10-36 • 3-1-07

Come To Me God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you and whispered come to me. With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away. Although we loved you, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best. Sadly missedby your loved ones, Tommy, Brian, David & Anna

Joe Sandefur Jr. 12-9-85 ★ 3-20-11 We can’t forget that fateful day, You had to leave, you went away. A sadness filled us up inside, Emotions that we could not hide. Tears, they came, sadness too, All our emotions, just for you. Time will heal, so we were told But time could never fill this hole. Here in our heart there is a place, You’re always there, keeping us safe. It’s filled with love and happy times, It’s never dark, your light it shines. In heaven now you do reside To watch over us with love & pride. I know one day, we’ll meet again, Until we do just know how much we miss you, and you are always with us. Love Always. NCAA and NIT Tournament updates

S

unday bore great news for basketball players with local ties. For the rst time in 21 years, the La Salle University Explorers, featuring 2010 Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School graduate Tyreek Duren, received an invitation to the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship. Last night, on their school’s 150th anniversary, the Atlantic-10 member took on the Mountain West Conference’s Boise State Broncos in a First Four contest in Dayton, Ohio, with the winner earning the 13th seed and advancing to tomorrow’s second-round West Region contest against the fourthseeded Kansas State Wildcats at Kansas City’s Sprint Center. Villanova Wildcats junior guard Tony Chennault, another ’10 Saints’ product, saw his Big East school earn the South Region’s No. 9 seed and a Friday date with the Atlantic Coast Conference’s North Carolina Tar Heels, also at the Sprint Center. The University of Massachusetts Minutemen, with junior guard Jesse Morgan, who played for Prep Charter High School, earned a spot in the National Invitation Tournament and hosted the Stony Brook Seawolves in Amherst last night. Sophomore guard Ameen Tanksley, another Prep Charter figure, senior forward Andre “Scooter” Gillette, of NeumannGoretti, and the Niagara University Purple Eagles visited the Maryland Terrapins Tuesday night, falling 86-70. A state of disbelief

S

outh Philly’s hopes for a state high school basketball winner perished last night when Center City’s Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School Mighty Elephants, with senior forward Jeremiah Worthem, of West Passyunk, and senior guard Shafeek Taylor, of Point Breeze, fell 83-66 in their PIAA Boys’ seminal to Vaux at Ben Franklin High School to nish 26-3. Hoping to top last year’s semifinal run, the West Passyunk’s Prep Charter Lady Huskies, stumbled, 67-46, in Saturday’s AAA quarterfinal against Bethlehem Catholic to end their campaign at 19-3. The biggest shock came Friday when the three-time AAA boys’ defending champion Ss. Neumann-Goretti Saints lost their quarterfinal against Donegal, 55-50. The East Passyunk Crossing ballers concluded the year 23-6. Their female counterparts matched last season’s AA second-round effort, falling to Notre Dame GP 51-49 in double overtime March 12 to complete a 14-12 campaign. SPR —By Joseph Myers
