Being fair with the fare

An open letter to SEPTA: You want to raise fares? I understand that SEPTA is a big asset to this city and you guys work hard and the cost of living is increasing, so on and so forth. However, before you raise fares, please keep in mind the following information. First and foremost, the public’s safety is not being properly protected. Your drivers jam pack these buses. I ride the Route 17 every day to and from work. It looks as if sometimes people are crawling from the ceiling. Maybe you could extend the buses to make it safer for your riders, being that we are paying for service. Also, maybe you could make seats wider to accommodate the people who don’t fit, as well as the ones who are forced to stand because some people take up more than one seat (I say this with no intention of insulting anyone). If the bus were to collide with another vehicle, almost every per-

@

son aboard would be injured because there are people standing on top of people. Secondly, your buses smell awful and are not clean. They are filled with trash. Again, this is harmful to us as passengers. We pay for your services. If we are going to pay extra, your services should be improved. And last but not least, I understand that it is “public transportation but for God’s sake, when you have people falling over, smelling like booze, or flat out sleeping standing up on a bus, it should be SEPTA’s responsibility to remove these individuals. Children ride these buses, and that is not something they need to see on their morning commute to school. Those are my main issues, but I’m certain the fact that buses are never on time is an issue to most. I hope you will take this into consideration as you are considering rate increases. Your jobs are tough. Dealing with the public has

to be taxing, but if you want us to pay more, you should give more. Nicole Canale South Philadelphia Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

n unknown man responsible for assaulting and robbing an employee inside her business, was caught on tape. The man walked behind the counter at Good & Plenty Mini Market, 1201 Snyder Ave., at 10:44 a.m. March 21 and struggled with the 42-year-old female store owner, according to police. He punched her and cut her neck with a knife, forcing her to open the register. After clearing the register, he placed the undetermined amount of cash, along with some of woman’s belongings in a white plastic bag. A 20-year-old woman entered the store during the crime, so the offender directed his attention to her, taking her wallet, cell phone, keys and $5, police said. The robber fled north on 12th Street and west on Mercy Street where he discarded his zip-up hoodie before continuing north on 13th Street and west on McKean Street, police said. He was described as black with a dark complexion, 5-foot-7; having light facial hair; and wearing a black jacket, royal blue shirt and black sneakers with white soles. A medic transported the employee to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where she was treated for a laceration to her neck, according to police. Life-ending altercation

Philadelphia Eye Associates |1703 S. Broad Street | Philadelphia, PA 19148 | 215-339-8100

A Point Breeze woman was stabbed inside her home in South Philly’s second homicide of 2013. Elaine Brooks, 46, of the 1900 block of Reed Street, received multiple stab wounds to her body at 9:17 p.m. Friday after what police believe was an argument

South Philly’s third — and Point Breeze’s second — homicide victim came less than three hours after and less than four blocks away from its second. Aaron Cole, 36, of North Philly, was gunned down on the 1200 block of South 22nd Street at 11:08 p.m. Friday, according to police. Cole was wounded five times with three bullets to his head, one to his back and one to his left shoulder. Officers transported him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. Sunday. The motive remained unknown, police, who did not have any suspects as of press time, said. To report information, call Homicide Division at 215-686-3334, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Three-peat thievery A West Philly man robbed three people at a South of South corner, and was apprehended after his final act. Brandon Thompson, 26, of West Philly, allegedly put a gun to a 42-year-old male cabbie’s back while he was pumping gas at 12:20 a.m. Sunday at Hess, 615 S. Broad St., and demanded cash, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The taxi driver handed over $200, and the thief supposedly fled in an unknown direction. At 2 a.m., he is believed to have returned to Hess and asked for $5 from a 25-yearold man, who was filling up his car and claimed he did not have it, Tolliver said. Thompson then allegedly walked behind his car, placed an object to his back and threatened to shoot. The man gave him his wallet. Thompson is believed to also have demanded he purchase a pack of cigarettes while the object believed to be a gun was still to his back. The man did as he was asked and Thompson supposedly fled in an unknown direction. Eight minutes later, Thompson allegedly swiped a purse from a 23-year-old woman while she was eating inside New

POLICE REPORT Tower Pizzeria, 1410 South St., Tolliver said. When police responded to the robbery in progress, the officers saw the victim and her friend chasing Thompson, who allegedly was running south on the 600 block of Broad Street. Police stopped the man on the 1400 block of Bainbridge Street where they recovered the woman’s brown wallet and a pack of Newport cigarettes from him. Thompson was charged with three counts of theft and receiving stolen property; two counts of robbery, terroristic threats and simple assault; one count of possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person; possession of marijuana; and various firearm violations, according to court records. Thompson’s bail was set at $300,000, which he had not posted at press time.

It was unclear whether Espada or Avallone allegedly pulled out a bat, but one of them started to swing it at their neighbor while the other pointed a black handgun at the man, who called 911. Both were arrested Sunday and charged with conspiracy, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime and firearm violations, according to court records. Floating around ideas Philadelphia Mummers Fancy Brigade Association clubs have selected their concepts for the 2014 parade, setting the stage for endless hours of preparation. both types of themes have won over the years.

■ By James Julia Review Special Contributor

T

he theme is what denes the Mummer organization for the remainder of the year. It is what the clubs are pinning their hopes on to win a championship or at least get some hardware that comes with a topfour finish. If the organization loves the theme, the leadership will not have to work hard to motivate the membership. If they do not, well, it can be quite the opposite. In the Brigade Division, there are no rules for how themes are picked. There is a deadline for when themes must be submitted. And, of The first in a course, there’s that monthly series one rule that causes focusing on the the most problems: behind-the-scenes One theme per catpreparations of egory (pirates, Indithe Philadelphia ans, Romans, etc.). Mummers Some brigades let Fancy Brigade their captain make Association. the decision while others have their leader put together a committee to come up with the idea. And some, like the Downtowners, 148-50 Snyder Ave., employ a very democratic process in which the membership selects the theme after an elected committee trims those submitted to three. The once-legendary Mummer secrecy is no longer part of the selection process. Everyone knows what everyone’s theme is the day they are turned in. There was a time when captains who picked the theme did not tell the membership until drills started in September or sometimes later. Even in today’s more open environment, the one thing that remains sacred and kept secret is the special effects that will be used in the theme. Brigades will pick their theme between January and March (Yes, the old adage that

WHETHER OR NOT a club is coming off of a win, once the new theme is selected, the slate is wiped clean. It’s spring training and everyone has a chance again. As with life, renewal in Mummery is a positive thing. Clubhouses will be decorated with the new theme while shirts and hats are ordered. And most importantly plans will be made on how to have fun with the theme on Soup Sunday (aka Hat Day, Gazo Day and Rally Day). The annual event takes places the second or third Sunday in December. Also, at this time, the age-old tradition of busting on other brigades about their new theme begins. Some clubs have been known to leave packages — and worse — on the doorsteps of rival clubhouses (there could be a column just on this tradition). But make no mistake, many hours of planning and building will take place over the next nine months — most of which will be spent in cold, damp warehouses or under I-95 practicing drills in all types of weather. For a Mummer, it is simply part of the tradition. Yes, many changes and reiterations will take place between now and New Year’s Day 2014. For a captain and theme committee, there is no better feeling than when it all comes together with sketches, costumes, choreography, music, props and special effects in a brilliant crescendo. Only 278 days until New Year’s Day. For more information, visit fancybrigade.com. SPR Jim Julia is the president of the Philadelphia Mummers Fancy Brigade Association.

There is no time to wait when it comes to the Mummers Parade. The clubs recently selected their themes for the Jan. 1 festivities.

Mummers start the next year on Jan. 2 is true). Once chosen, the captain and theme committee will move forward with the planning almost immediately. Some clubs may select a theme that has

been done before, and will look for that one ingredient that will make their version unique and their own. Other clubs seem to thrive on going “outside the box.” What makes it interesting is that

MAKE-A-WISH continued from page 1 they’ll be helping a child they can put a face to,” Gallo said Friday from Alphabet Station, 1510 E. Passyunk Ave. Through her business, the resident of the 1500 block of East Passyunk Avenue has overseen coat campaigns and food initiatives for Philabundance, 3616 S. Galloway St., and gladly accepted last year’s suggestion from Yael Tacher, director of program services for Make-A-Wish Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley, to have her facilities foster hope for children with life-threatening conditions. Her Blue Bell-based chapter made its initial interaction with a South Philly entity to help Sophie, a now-3-year-old Montgomery County dweller with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, to go to the same Florida destination. “We brought in more than $8,000 the first time and set out in February to match or beat that this year,” Passyunk Square’s Gallo said, adding her helpers tallied $7,100 through the hop, with two weeks remaining in their altruistic outreach. For Gabe, whose family elected not to comment, the procured amount will not hamper his chances to enjoy a spring journey to the Sunshine State, as all children between ages 2-and-a-half and 18 whose physicians deem them medically eligible to receive and participate in a wish have their request honored, Tacher said. “We cover everything because we don’t want families dipping into their pockets,” the resident of the 1300 block of Dickinson Street said, with her employer aiding clans in 10 counties to obtain wishes whose average values are $6,177 in cash and $2,456 in-kind. For Tacher, whose two children attend Alphabet Academy, which consists of the aforementioned station; The Alphabet Station, 1631 E. Passyunk Ave.; The Alphabet Tree House, 1506 E. Passyunk Ave.; and The Aquarium, 1720 E. Passyunk Ave., helping Gabe, whom she said has dealt with his conditions for most of his life, gives the community and the children chances to generate more hope and friendships. “Though they cannot relate to what Gabe is going through medically, our guys, especially our similarly aged kids, understand that he wants to enjoy himself and have fun with his family,” Gallo, aware that MakeA-Wish sends siblings and parents along for recipients’ experiences, said. “Once we knew he would be our beneficiary, we set out to secure donations, and the kids really began to look forward to hopping.” ONE OF 62 national chapters, Make-AWish Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley has granted nearly 5,000 wishes since 1986, including 291 for Fiscal Year 2012, when 40 percent of the

youngsters sought excursions to Disney World. Tacher’s division is celebrating its sixth year of using bunny hops, walkathons and jump rope contests to ensure happier days for stricken children and do so as an extension of the foundation begun in 1980 following the death of 7-year-old leukemia patient and Arizona resident Christopher James Greicius, who dreamed of becoming a police officer and experienced a day as one. With more than 219,000 honored wishes in the United States and its territories and 47 countries adopting similar missions, global efforts to have smiles outnumber tears for forlorn families have proven lifeaffirming. For Alphabet Academy figures, their recent revelry meant revealing just how much they care for their peer. “Come the day of the event, they were so excited,” Gallo said of the 100 eager participants, the youngest of whom waited for the Easter Bunny to join them in their classrooms. The others congregated at The Singing Fountain, also the location for last year’s levity, for 20 minutes of hopping delight. “We took breaks but it was pretty lively and enjoyable,” Gallo said. Their famous rabbit visitor had them reaching for the sky, though its look could not fool Natalie Foster. “I know someone was in a costume,” the very observant 4-year-old said of the bunny, “but I didn’t really care because I just wanted to hop to help Gabe.” “His nose was really big and pink,” class-

mate and fellow 4-year-old Aaliyah Hennessey added of the garbed guest. “We had so much fun with him.” While they delighted in recalling their joy, they also wished Gabe a great time among other cherished characters. According to Make-A-Wish Philadelphia and Susquehanna Valley’s website, he likely will benefit from the trip, as 97 percent of wish families and 96 percent of health professional observe increases in recipients’ emotional health, and 89 percent of nurses, doctors, social workers and child life specialists believe the wish experience can influence physical stability. Tacher mentioned that Sophie is progressing well, and she and Gallo cannot wait to see what time in Florida will do for Gabe. Well aware of childhood as a supposed time for innocence and carefree days, they have their own wish, namely, the sustaining of the belief that no matter ones’ circumstances, a little generosity can provide big dividends. “We really admire and appreciate all the help we’ve received because 87 percent of the revenue we take in will be applied by Make-A-Wish to help Gabe and because we love knowing that even in these tough times, people are still finding ways to contribute,” Gallo said. “To everyone, we say ‘Thank you’ on his behalf.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Cultural pride is guiding a Point Breeze resident’s efforts to help the city’s Cambodian population to excel. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

hen Rorng Sorn arrives at Bala Cynwyd’s Hilton Hotel Saturday evening for the 34th annual Cambodian New Year Celebration, she will experience the gathering as a reveler and a realist. The fourth-year executive director of the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia certainly will enjoy the cultural performances and camaraderie while remaining mindful that her fellow Southeast Asians need more direction and intervention to thrive in America. “Knowing there are so many struggling families motivates me to make differences in their lives, with the hardest part being the awareness of having limited time to do all I desire,” the 44-yearold said. “Still, we have much to be proud of, and our ceremony will express that, especially through children’s dances and a video montage.” South Philly, Logan and Olney contain the city’s highest concentration of Cambodians, the resident of 17th and Mifflin Staff photo by Greg Bezanis

LIFESTYLES streets said, so she has aligned her organization, which has a center at 2416-18 S. Seventh St. and in North Philly, with agencies that are helping her to address their most pressing matters — health woes, socioeconomic setbacks, educational deficiencies and immigration dilemmas. Advocating for more than 1,000 individuals has enabled Sorn to intensify her appreciation for her heritage while also reminding her of one of life’s constants. “People suffer everywhere and I understand very much what my people go through,” the native of Cambodia’s Kampong Speu Province said. “So many of us carry so much baggage because of a number of circumstances, including former time as refugees, but we are expected to make something of ourselves and contribute to communities, and we want to do so.” Because many populations are languishing, Sorn and her colleagues approach their mission minus insularity, offering services to any forlorn party. Funding cuts have hampered their progress, but for the mother of two boys, ages 18 and 12, persisting for the sake of the next generation counts as the central tenet of her professional and familial identity. “We’re striving to engage all Cambodians in building civic pride,” Sorn said, noting

the organization of cleanups and the registration of hundreds of voters for last year’s election as achievements. “For our young participants, we have ample programming, including, as a way to assimilate themselves to American culture even more, hip-hop dance classes, material they will incorporate into our new year celebration. Because we’re the only existing, active organization for Cambodians in the tri-state area, we constantly care about the present because we know its influence on the future.” SORN HAS DEVELOPED such an affinity for helping families to flourish by reflecting on her own often arduous background. The Khmer Rouge, the moniker of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, ascended to power in 1975, establishing a reign rampant with forced labor, political executions and starvation. When Vietnamese forces invaded in ’79, incidentally the same year of her employer’s genesis, Sorn and her kin, including four siblings, soon found themselves bound for refugee camps, with four sites serving as their quarters for the next eight years, the last being Thailand’s Khao-I-Dang. During the confinement, Sorn, 11 at its onset, experienced interruptions to her education but enjoyed enough consistency to become a certified nurse

five years into the period. “Eventually we received an opportunity through a sponsor to come to the United States in ’87, and we lived on the third floor of a place not far from where I live now,” she said of her initial residence on the 1600 block of Mifflin Street. “During time in the Philippines, I had picked up more English and understanding of American culture, so I felt somewhat prepared for this new existence.” Her clan relocated to the 1900 block of Morris Street and without knowledge of public transportation, she set out on foot each day from her abode to a clothing job on the 2700 block of South Street. “After a few weeks, I thought ‘This is not the life I want,’” Sorn said of coveting more education to bolster her prospects. She entered South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., as a junior and also took language lessons at the Houston Center, 2029 S. Eighth St. Her confidence growing, she soon added an associate’s degree in liberal arts from Community College of Philadelphia and a medical interpretation position at Health Center No. 2, 1720 S. Broad St., to her résumé. “All of these experiences were leading me toward CAGP, I realize, because they were exposing me to community growth,”

she said. She landed what she termed her “first real job” through Albert Einstein Medical Center, spending four years as an educational outreach specialist for Southeast Asian women. A spell as a realtor preceded her joining the Cambodian Association as a field coordinator, with interim executive director and director of program duties following. “I fit in right away because I have always felt a great connection with the community, including its struggles and aspirations,” Sorn said. “I feel empowered through helping them to understand how to meet their responsibilities because in many ways, we teach people how to help themselves so they can help each other. That process is simultaneously challenging and rewarding.” The aforementioned trouble areas are serving as the components of her organization’s five-year plan to bring to communities the sort of happiness that will be on display Saturday. Sorn, too, is hoping to evolve, with dreams of acquiring a doctorate and teaching at a university. “The future looks busy, and that’s something I cherish,” she said. already spent the money, but “Senator No” didn’t want to pay the bill. (The Senate voted “yes” by 30 votes). Toomey voted against confirming Chuck Hagel, a Republican and a decorated Vietnam War veteran, as Secretary of Defense. The Senate normally provides deference to the president in cabinet appointments because unlike Supreme Court appointments, service ends with president’s term (The Senate confirmed him by 17 votes). You also can tell where the senator’s sympathies lie by looking at how various interest groups have rated him over the past few years. He has received an 100 percent rating from Global Exchange for loyalties to the finance, insurance and real estate lobbies and an 83 percent rank from The Gun Owners of America. Because of his conservative stance on abortion issues, Toomey has received no support from Planned Parenthood. He has had a 25 percent rating on civil liberties issues from Open Doors USA, an F from the National Education Association, no backing from Citizens for Global Solutions based on his foreign aid and everything from 0 to 33 percent ratings on various health issues. When Toomey ran against Joe Sestak for the Senate in ’10, he bristled when his opponent labeled him beholden to Wall Street. Toomey likes to portray himself as a staunch defender of the middle class, although one would be hard pressed to find where he votes that way. What makes Toomey so different from some of the more boisterous Tea Party members of Congress is his veneer of respectability. You won’t hear established Republicans like John McCain calling Toomey a “wacko.” Yet in many ways, there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between Toomey and the loony-tune right. When Rand Paul (R-Ky.) took the Senate floor to filibuster the nomination of John Brennan as the director of the CIA, Toomey was one of the few Republican senators to support him on the floor. It was not really aimed at Brennan, whom Paul knew would be nominated as soon as his filibuster ended. The real target was the possible domestic use of drones, something most Republicans as well as Democrats felt was the wrong debate on the use of drones. Toomey, as he always seems to do, managed to side with the most extreme element of his party, while maintaining a façade of being part of the political establishment. Toomey has three years remaining in his term. At this point, he does not seem in any danger of not being reelected. He is the clean-cut guy, who appears the very symbol of the Republican establishment. In reality, Toomey is an extremist. When it comes to helping the poor and middle class, Toomey is Senator No. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

In “The Host,” Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) and Ian O’Shea (Jake Abel) encounter a race of body-snatching “Souls” that threaten mankind.

Fantasy world By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

T

here’ll be many who’ll apply the praise “Better than ‘Twilight!’” to “The Host,” as this new (and occasionally superior) film also is based on a book by “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer. But such kudos would wrongly suggest that the “Twilight” flicks raised some kind of artistic bar, and what’s more, this dystopian soap opera bears more than a passing resemblance to the ballad of Bella and Edward. The plot is enough to make one’s head spin: Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) is one of few humans left on Earth after the invasion of a race of body-snatching “Souls,” whose possessions are marked by the presence of glowing irises. Melanie gets possessed, too, though not fully, as she mentally fights against her occupier, “Wanderer,” and leaves two minds working to control the same body, presenting the ultimate internal conflict. Things get especially tricky when Melanie urges Wanderer to run off to a human hideout, where Melanie’s beau, Jared (Max Irons), and another hunk, Ian (Jake Abel), each fall for one half of the same form. So, once again, Meyer has penned an elaborate female fantasy, wherein two men pine after a “special girl” of remarkable power (for reasons never explained, Melanie also possesses superhuman strength). That’s all fine and good for the film’s target audience, but there have already been enough apologetic reviews lobbed at “The Twilight Saga,” which repeatedly got off the hook because “the fans would love it.” The truth is, “The Host,” like its epic, soul-sister predecessor, offers a cavalcade of preposterous dialogue, thin characterizations, on-the-nose metaphors and

romance-novel-lite couplings — all of it adding up to a whole lot of not much. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the film also inexplicably throws in pseudo-biblical names like Jebediah (Melanie’s uncle played by William Hurt), and proves a poor vehicle for Ronan, whose goofy narration makes her “The Lovely Bones” voiceover seem comparatively poetic. One major plus is that the in-pursuit “villains,” led by Diane Kruger, have nearthree-dimensional depth. It’s a pity the same can’t be said for the film in general.

Available Tuesday A sort of urban cousin to “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “LUV” follows a young boy (Michael Rainey Jr.) as he’s taught to live in a tough world by his ex-con, gangster uncle (Common). Rapper-turned-actor Common shines as the unlikely father figure, and though the movie stumbles as it reveals its typical crime-lineage plot points, the bond between the central figures feel true. The underseen film also stars Danny Glover, Dennis Haysbert and Meagan Good. SPR Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-entertainment/movies.

e has been called the “de facto Tea Party voice” in Congress. Of the last 50 votes taken in the Senate in the past year, he has voted “nay” on 35 of them. He is U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, or as I like to call him “Senator No.” While Pennsylvania voted for Barack Obama in the last two presidential elections, it voted in a senator who rarely agrees with or supports the president. Those who voted for both Obama and Toomey obviously can’t complain about gridlock in our nation’s capital. Any legislator can vote “no” on any number of issues. That doesn’t necessarily make him a bad legislator. The numbers can be twisted to suit a purpose. Your columnist admits as much. But when one examines his voting record, that one realizes that if there is a mainstream in American politics, Toomey is somewhere on dry land. He recently sent voters an e-mail where he boasted of his efforts at cooperation, but he has a distinctly funny way of showing it. His voting record is public, so you don’t have to take my word for it. Look it up. Here is a sampling of Toomey’s voting record from April 2012 to the present. You decide. Toomey voted “no” to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (The Senate voted “yes” by 37 votes). Toomey voted “no” on prohibiting increases in interest rates for student loans (The bill was not invoked). Toomey voted “no” on repealing sugar subsidies (The amendment was tabled). Toomey voted “no” on increased funding for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (The Senate also voted “no”). Toomey voted “no” on the middle-class tax cut (The Senate voted “yes” by 3 votes). Toomey voted “no” on repealing the limit on procuring alternative fuel (The Senate voted “yes” by 25 votes). Toomey voted “no” on expanding Tricare health coverage of autism for military families (The Senate voted “yes” by 37 votes). Toomey voted “no” on prohibiting the indefinite detention of citizens (The Senate voted “yes” by 38 votes). Toomey voted “no” on the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act that would have provided relief help for victims of Hurricane Sandy (The Senate voted “yes” by 26 votes). Toomey voted “no” to ensure the U.S. government’s “complete and timely payment of obligations.” In other words, the government

Bariatric surgery may be the answer. My job involves pep rallies. I announce college games. But at 348 pounds, I didn’t have much pep – just high blood pressure, headaches and sleepless nights. Luckily, my wife introduced me to Jefferson, where I had my bariatric surgery. Today, my hypertension and sleep apnea are behind me, but the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery team still has my back. At my current 188 pounds, it’s way easier to get in the team spirit. And, with all my friends at Jefferson, I’ve got a whole other team to cheer for. Ralic’s on South ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

I

always keep a keen eye out for new restaurants by simply walking or driving around the city’s neighborhoods. A while ago, I happened upon Ralic’s on South, which features seafood. I visited the website and decided to make a visit. It has been especially cold and windy, so the breath of warm air that greeted us was most welcome. Ralic’s is a large space with 180 seats and numerous televisions on which to enjoy March Madness. Two women were sipping wine and enjoying appetizers at the bar when Edward and I arrived. Since the dining room was empty, we joined them. They were regulars as were two men who slid onto bar stools for draft beers and assorted happy hour appetizer specials, which we did not notice until one of the gentlemen pointed them out to us. This was most kind. The man in charge of the kitchen is executive chef John Anninos. We were told he used to be a commercial fisherman, which is a difficult job I appreciate. The menu was simple, large and straightforward. There were no gimmicks or trendy dishes. This suited me fine. A Bluecoat martini ($10) and Rob Roy ($9.50) were icy cold and expertly prepared. The price was right, too. We began with two happy hour appetizers. Fried calamari ($5 or $9.50 regular price) consisted of a large mound of piping-hot, tender bay squid dusted in seasoned flour and flash fried to a golden brown. The squid was crisp and tasty. We especially liked the inclusion of hot peppers, which Coffee/Café/Sweets Caffe Chicco: 2532 S. Broad St., 215-334-3100, $

added a small kick because, thank goodness, Anninos had a light hand. Mussels ($5 or $8.50 regular price) can be ordered in a red, white or cream sauce. I cannot think of any restaurant that charges such a modest price for a good-sized portion of farm-raised mollusks bathed in a light white wine sauce with garlic and fresh herbs. They were free of grit and sand. A basket of warm bread arrived just in time for us to finish off the sauce. I have eaten New England clam chowder all over the city and in Boston. The bartender told us Anninos adds carrots to his version ($6.50). I have never seen this, but tried it. He was much too heavy handed here. The soup was the right consistency but was too sweet. A server saw I was not eating the soup and removed it from the bill. The Manhattan version ($6.50) fared better. It was chock full of clams, vegetables and the right touch of tomato. Some restaurants add a dash of cream, but Anninos prepares it straight. Edward orders a fried seafood combination whenever he can. It takes him straight back to his childhood when he and his family spent Sunday evenings at Fisher’s Restaurant on Broad Street. This version ($27.50) made a fine presentation. The platter was brimming with shrimp, calamari, scallops and flounder. Each fish was done just right and not a bit overcooked. The problem was they lacked flavor. The coating on our calamari appetizer was nicely seasoned, but here we could not even detect a hair of salt. The pepper mill arrived and pepped things up a bit. ExRestaurant Review:

tra tartar sauce appeared almost as soon as we requested it. Since the platter was so generous, we toted some flounder and shrimp home to enjoy the next night at which time I seasoned it and warmed it up in the oven. It was simply delicious. Broiled stuffed shrimp ($17.50) smacks of the 1950s and ’60s. When carefully prepared, it can be a most satisfying dish. I received about five midsize shrimp topped with bits of crabmeat and simply broiled. They also required a bit of seasoning, but arrived on a pool of butter sauce that added a bit of depth and moistness. The side of sautéed spinach needed some garlic and herbs. Devil’s Den’s Diablo Mussels

U

Chef Paul Trowbridge

Devil’s Den

Owner: Erin Wallace Opened April 1, 2008 1148 S. 11th St. 215-339-0855 devilsdenphilly.com

pon coming to Devil’s Den, 1148 S. 11th St., in 2010, chef Paul Trowbridge revamped its menu. “I didn’t really do too much to the mussels. They’ve always been popular,” he said noting he added a fifth option, the Gates of Hell, which has a higher heat level than the Diablo Mussels. The chef, who learned he could make a living off of his talents when his passion for food developed, started his culinary career at then-Center City’s Dock Street Brewery and Restaurant in 1992. He worked at a few Montgomery County spots before returning to the city to work at Moriarty’s Pub in Center City in 2005. “They say once you get started you can’t shake it,” Trowbridge said. The chef now is divulging the most popular mussels dish for Devil’s Den fans to try at home.

“It’s got a nice balance of flavors,” he said. “You get the fat from the bacon and heat from the Sriracha and balance it out with the butter.”

INGREDIENTS: 1 tablespoon of olive oil 1 tablespoon of garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon of shallots, chopped into small dice, not crushed 2 tablespoons of slightly crisp bacon, chopped and fat rendered 22 Prince Edward Island mussels, cleaned and debearded Salt and pepper, to taste 2 cups of wheat beer (chef’s choice is Franziskaner) 2 tablespoons of cilantro 1/4 cup of Sriracha

rigale relied on Duren, a Yeadon resident, the same way his postsecondary coach is doing, as a member of a four-guard set. Though using one means often sacrificing size, it typically yields a quickness advantage. All along, Arrigale has known his former athlete’s speed would benefit the Explorers. “John has been putting all the parts together,” he said, “and I’ve felt Tyreek would be the guy to drive the car.” Having led the Explorers in scoring seven times, Duren knew his goal would be to visit the goal often against the Southeastern Conference’s University of Mississippi Rebels Sunday. The 12th-seeded representatives from the Magnolia State had relied on junior shooting guard Marshall Henderson to register a 27-8 record coming in, and the 6-foot-2 baller drew constant attention from La Salle’s guards, with Duren and his peers failing to fall prey to the hype surrounding his perimeter play. Galloway outshot Henderson from beyond the arc, with six three-pointers to the flashy figure’s four, but the latter performer’s team looked as if it would emerge victorious until Duren proved his durability in the clutch. A 78 percent free-throw shooter, he knocked down a pair of charity-stripe at-

tempts with 1:07 left to knot the score at 7474. With 32 seconds left, Duren accepted an inbounds pass and waited for an opening. “Any team that we play, no matter if they’re big or small, we try to beat them off the dribble,” he said. “We create opportunities for our teammates or finish at the cup if we get our opportunity.” Duren, who finished with 19 points, fed junior guard Tyrone Garland, a John Bartram High grad, for a bank shot, dubbed the Southwest Philly Floater, with 2.5 ticks left. An errant Ole Miss heave preserved a 76-74 win and set up La Salle’s first Sweet 16 appearance since ’55. “At this point, you’re too young to be getting tired,” Duren said of winning three times in five days. He will need his energy for tonight’s 10:17 p.m. TBS-aired tilt against the Shockers, who lived up to their name Saturday by beating the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs, 76-70. “I just listen to the people closest to me,” Duren said. “They tell me we are just as good as any other team in the tournament, in the country. If we play tough, we can beat anybody.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.

Now is a good time to address your roof after this tough winter season. Ice & snow freezing and melting opens flashings, lifts seams, drain box seals open, and even high winds can cause capping to blow loose! By having a qualified roofer do an inspection now, it may save you $$ from water damage later. Sometimes only minor maintenance is needed. So how do you find a qualified roofing company? The Better Business Bureau and other websites post reviews online, and in Pa all home improvement contractors must have an Attorney General’s license. It’s blue and should be readily available to be shown to you and it means your contractor is fully licensed & insured, and must follow the roofing industry standards set by the state. Another way is to see how long the company has been in business, is it local, family owned, has a neighbor used them successfully, do they have a web site, have they won any awards, helped out in the community, are they working on a regular basis in the area? Following these guidelines will help in the search for an honest and qualified roofer!

prayer to the blessed virgin

(never known to fail). O Most Beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful Vine Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here You are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor my necessity (Make Request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. Then you must publish it and it will be granted to you.
