Broad St., as attendees anticipated enjoying the 55,000-square-foot mix of interior and exterior establishments and diversions. “They are your cathedrals. Xfinity Live! is thrilled to become your living room.” Cordish, whose business ranks as the country’s largest entertainment entity developer, commemorated his family’s first stadium-area project with partnering personnel from Comcast-Spectacor and Mayor Michael Nutter. Their commitment to furthering Philadelphia’s reputation as a prime sports center and leisure location helped work to end After more than four years of plans, Xfinity Live! Shouting hooray for Stanton! To the Editor: Kudos to the administration, parents, teachers and students of the E. M. Stanton School, 17th and Christian streets, on the decision by the School Reform Commission to spare the school. This was another victory for the small school which has battled hard to remain viable in spite of poor support from the School District of Philadelphia. Like the little engine that could, the Stanton community has proved it has not only the talent but the heart to fight for its survival. What separates Stanton from other schools that were forced to close is the intense involvement by the whole community, including business leaders in the educational process. Along with heavy doses of the arts and a wealth of extracurricular activities, students get the message every day that learning is important. If they knew what they were doing, the SRC would duplicate this model for the rest of the city. Congratulations to all who made this huge success possible! Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia
Admiring Nutter To the Editor: Say what you will regarding Mayor Michael Nutter. I, for one, admire him immensely. When our city contended with the flash mobs last summer, Mayor Nutter didn’t waste any time. He enacted a curfew for teenagers immediately, and the police enforced it. When Philadelphia was voted by a magazine as one of the filthiest cities in the country, he initiated the Philly Spring Cleanup, and thousands of concerned citizens gathered to improve our city streets (myself included). When it seemed as though our city would lose valuable funding, our mayor made a quick trip to Harrisburg to urge lobbyists to support us. And, finally, when a young teenager named Trayvon Martin was tragically murdered in Florida, Mayor Nutter took the time from his busy schedule to attend the protest in Love Park. Our mayor is a decent, caring family man who genuinely wants to see our city succeed and flourish. Obviously, none of the residents of
Philadelphia wants higher taxes. But it’s time to face facts. Our city has a major financial crisis, and Mayor Nutter cannot simply grow a money tree in City Hall to replenish the budget. We may not like the increase in our taxes, but we need to accept it. I applaud Mayor Nutter’s efforts to enhance the City of Philadelphia, and I encourage everyone to support him. Carol A. Pasquarello South Philadelphia
Extending a sweeping hand An open letter to Neighbors: As you may have heard, the fifth annual Philly Spring Cleanup is quickly approaching on April 14. Many of you signed up last fall to register your block as a Litter-Free Zone, and LoMo would like to help support you and keep that positive momentum going! If you would like to organize a cleanup on your block on the day of the Philly Spring Cleanup, let us know.

We can help by providing bags, gloves, brooms and dustpans, and we’ll also help coordinate a trash pick-up with the City following your event. We also can share a flyer template to help you get the word out to your neighbors. E-mail the Lower Moyamensing Civic Association at lomophilly@ gmail.com and include your block, a list of needed supplies and what corner you’ll be leaving the trash bags. Also, let us know how things are going in your Litter-Free Zone! Have neighbors been helping out? Any recurring problems we should know about? Do you need a new Litter-Free Zone sign? We look forward to teaming up with you for this year’s Philly Spring Cleanup! Thanks for helping LoMo “Keep Up the Sweep Up! If you’re not a LoMo resident, we’ll do our best to connect you with your civic to get the ball rolling! Police Report

e
olice nabbed a Grays Ferry man for a Feb. 25 East Passyunk Crossing and Passyunk Square incident and then linked him to an earlier Lower Moyamensing holdup after police compared video surveillance. Michael Allen, 41, of the 2600 block of Jackson Street, allegedly approached a 38-yearold man from behind Michael Allen on the 600 block of Fernon Street at 8 p.m. Feb. 25, Officer Christine O’Brien of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. He supposedly placed an object, which is believed to be a gun, to his back, so the man put his hands up. When Allen allegedly told him to put his hands down, he swiped $22 and cigarettes from the man’s pockets. Twenty-three minutes later, Allen is believed to have entered Rite Aid, 1443 S. Seventh St., where he cut in line and demanded cash from a 22-year-old female employee’s register, O’Brien said. He had one of his hands in his pocket, but left empty-handed. Police surveying the area spotted and arrested Allen at 8:30 p.m. on the 500 block of Fernon Street, O’Brien said. As a result of surveillance footage, police believed the thief in a video from the Feb. 22 robbery of Los Charales Inc., 2100 S. Ninth St., also is the 41-year-old, according to the Public Affairs Unit. Allen allegedly walked into the Lower Moyamensing corner store at 6:55 p.m. and said, “Give me all the money. I have a gun” to a 32-year-old employee, who opened the register, according to police.. Allen is believed to have grabbed $1,000 from the drawer and fled eastbound on Snyder Avenue. The employee followed him, but lost sight of the offender at Eighth Street. Allen, who was charged with three counts of robbery simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and related offenses, was rearrested at 3 p.m . March 27 at South Detective Division, 2301 S. 24th St., for the later incident, according to court records. He previously has pled guilty to robberies in 1991, 2001 and ’09.
Alleged stabber nabbed A West Philly man was arrested for killing a South of South man inside his apartment and stashing the body in the closet. John M. Smallwood, 33, of the 6000 block of Irving Street, has been charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. Smallwood John M. allegedly stabbed Smallwood Shawn Andrews, 41, inside his apartment on the 700 block of South 19th Street following a dispute, Officer Tanya Little of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. Police discovered the victim at 4:31 p.m. March 24 inside his bedroom closet. Authorities pronounced him dead at 5:12 p.m. Police brought Smallwood in for questioning at the department’s headquarters, 750 Race St., and then placed him under arrest at 10 a.m. March 28, Little said. He was held without bail in county jail at press time, according to court records.
Dodging a bullet A man had a close call when gunfire erupted in Point Breeze last week. The 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were about to enter a home on the 1900 block of Mountain Street when the pair heard gunshots coming from 19th Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man felt a burning sensation on his leg and the two quickly went into the dwelling. Neither was injured as the bullet had entered and exited the man’s pant leg with out hitting his leg, Tolliver said. Detectives recovered ballistics evidence at the scene. The offender was described as black, age 18 to 25, 5-foot-9 to 6 foot, thin and wearing a dark-colored hoodie and a baseball cap. Child rapist pleads guilty
A pharmacist was convicted of running a pill mill from his Dickinson Narrows office. Richard Minicozzi, 78, of Elkins Park, was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and 17 counts of distribution of controlled substances March 14, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and not guilty on one distribution count, according to court records. Minicozzi, with the help of his assistant Joan Israel, of the 700 block of Morris Street, purchased pills, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone and alprazolam, from pharmaceutical supply companies and repackaged them for sale at his office between about January 2005 to September ’10, according to court records. Israel and Minicozzi falsified records to make it seem as though patrons received physical exams and treatment even though they did not and allowed customers to use multiple names to obtain medicine. Minicozzi also dispensed 60 Vicodin pills to an undercover officer Nov. 17, ’08. Israel pled guilty March 13, according to court documents. Both will be sentenced July 2. Minicozzi faces at least a decade in jail, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. SPR

former West Passyunk resident will spend up to about seven decades in prison for two separate crimes. Christopher Reeves, 33, formerly of the 1900 block of South 23rd Street, will serve 31-and-a-half to 63 years in jail for raping a woman in a Bella Vista coffee shop a year ago and another twoand-a-half to five years for 2010 theft and receiving stolen property Christopher charges. Reeves, who is beReeves lieved to have been homeless at the time, entered Bean Exchange Coffee House, 650 Bainbridge St., and asked a 29-year-old employee for some cash at 6 a.m. March 31, ’11, according to police. Although she gave him a few dollars, he returned 30 minutes later demanding cash. He took $173 from the till and pushed the woman inside the shop’s bathroom where he sexually assaulted her. He was arrested three days later in Chester while attempting to find a homeless shelter, Assistant District Attorney Michael Stackow said. Bail was set at $150,000 April 5 and doubled April 21 after Stackow made a point that Reeves failed to appear for court for the theft sentencing March 24, ’11 — a week prior to the assault, but a month after being released on his own recognizance upon pleading guilty to the Dec. 28, ’10 incident, according to court records. He pled guilty to rape and robbery Oct. 12, ’11. Court of Common Pleas Judge William J. Mazzola sentenced Reeves to three consecutive eight-and-a-half-to-17-year sentences for rape and two counts of forcible compulsion plus another six to 12 years for robbery March 23 while three days later Court of Common Pleas Judge Rayford A. Means added two sentences of two-anda-half to five years to run simultaneously, but consecutive to the former jail time. He will remain at the state prison in Montgomery County, according to court records.

Chestnut sexually assaulted a then-5-yearold girl on the 900 block of Winton Street July 8, 2011. Authorities arrested Chestnut Nov. 14, ’11 after tips led them behind DeAnthony von Self Storage, 12 Chestnut E. Oregon Ave., where it seems he was residing inside a 5-by30-foot metal tube, according to the U.S. Marshal Service. Chestnut did not post his $250,000 bail that was set the day after his arrest and therefore, has remained in county jail, according to court records. ODUNDE 365 continued from page 1 with a pair of dances. Their well-received drumming expertise and footwork marked another success for ODUNDE 365, an offshoot of ODUNDE, Inc., 2308 Grays Ferry Ave., overseer of the ODUNDE Festival, which in June will celebrate its 37th anniversary of promoting African culture. The afternoon gathering featured six performances focusing on Brazil as the chief recipient of Africans during the 16th to 19th century Atlantic slave trade-fueled diaspora. The event corresponded with the Imagine Africa gallery project, which in September will end the museum’s year-long look at the titular continent. As ODUNDE works to educate people on the forced exodus, Chief Executive Officer Bumi Fernandez, a display board member, sought to involve the children. “I am looking to make ODUNDE a global phenomenon,” the resident of 21st and Fitzwater streets said. Her outreach followed fortunate late summer dealings with Rahim Islam, chief executive officer and president of Universal Companies, 800 S. 15th St., which runs the youngsters’ educational locale. He approved of making ODUNDE more than a one-weekend wonder, and dance classes began shortly afterward at the school and Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 744 S. 17th St., the latter being one of her sites when employed with the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department. That entity assisted the mother of two, whose matriarch, Lois Fernandez, founded ODUNDE in 1975, to develop enthusiasm for youth programs. “Such opportunities really give kids the experiences necessary for growth,” Bumi Fernandez said. Under the direction of Ronsha Dickerson, head dance instructor for Camden’s Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble, the children in nine classes perfected their offerings to the excited attendees, who had already enjoyed workshops on drumming and assorted dances. “It’s great to welcome new generations,” Lois Fernandez, whose brainchild draws more than 500,000 culturally covetous consumers to its 12-block extravaganza, said. As five boys manned drums, 11 girls swerved to the lamban, a welcoming dance popular in Guinea, Mali and Senegal. With precise slaps and steps, they had ears and eyes marveling for two minutes. Their beats and moves proved that Bumi Fernandez’s allegiance to ODUNDE, which means “Happy New Year” in Nigeria’s Yoruba language, deserves merit. With 192 million inhabitants, Brazil ranks as the fifth most populous country. According to culturaldiplomacy.org, nearly 86 million, or just about 45 percent, are Af-

ro-Latinos, placing the South America land atop the world’s diaspora statistical chart. Saturday’s program promised the students would complement their work with “a Brazilian flair,” and they did by giving their salutational offering a rapid tempo. Donning African dresses, the girls twirled their frames as their cohorts pounded their instruments. Their efforts led to an encore, with Dickerson having her daughter lead a koukou, a celebratory dance that called on the skillful hands of fellow kindergartener Hassan Sabree, who worked a djembe drum to provide a rollicking mood. “The day was great,” the Camden resident, who took up the instrument at 1, said. “I play because music is fun.” SIMILAR MUSIC WILL be among the delights of this year’s ODUNDE jubilation. Bumi Fernandez revealed the upcoming occasion will be the first time her beloved endeavor will include a week’s worth of events, culminating with June 10’s 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. grouping of more than 200 arts, crafts and food vendors. The longest running and largest East Coast African American street festival, ODUNDE uses 23rd and South streets as its center, but the levity and spirit of the action fill the entire radius with such verve that Lois Fernandez knew in handing over duties to her only daughter nearly 16 years ago that all would be well. She also knew her offspring would preach inclusivity though ODUNDE primarily honors African cultures. “ODUNDE is for everyone,” Lois Fernandez, who in December 2010 took part in the dedication of Osun Village, which houses ODUNDE and offers African-inspired cultural programs, said. “Through ODUNDE 365, we are hoping to coordinate diverse celebrations with churches, community groups and anyone with pas-
sion for being culture crusaders.” The activist hopes to collaborate constantly with the museum and feels her daughter’s commitment to ODUNDE’s mission will yield results. “I am happy Bumi has followed my path, and her involvement is a blessing,” she said. “Newness is usually good, and whatever direction she wants to take ODUNDE in, I’m sure it will work out.” Lois Fernandez recalled carrying a young Bumi on her back for an early ODUNDE experience. That Bumi now carries ODUNDE on her back and looks for cultural ties furthers her mother’s opinion that new ideas mark the successful transition from one generation to another. The Universal children also proved the elder Fernandez’s point by earning applause and hoots. “They are like sponges; they suck up everything,” Dickerson said of the enrollees in her 28-year-old ensemble. The youths range in age from 5 to 13, and the youngest, including Tenenfig and Hassan, are destined to acquire bigger roles. They will welcome more companions, as ODUNDE 365 will begin five weeks of Saturday African dance and drumming classes April 28 at Marian Anderson. Existing members will perform at ODUNDE, so Dickerson is preparing the sponges to be more absorbent. “Prolonging culture is vital,” she said. “These children are forming the arts as their passion, and that is so admirable.” Bumi Fernandez foresees the children as being great advocates for her mission to make ODUNDE a daily gift. “We will have obstacles,” she said, “but we can make it all work.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. he School Reform Commission voted March 29 to determine the status of 10 Philadelphia schools facing closure. While eight institutions — none of which are in South Philadelphia — learned that the 2011-12 school year would be their last, two, including one in the South of South neighborhood, received the necessary support needed to continue educating students. Edwin M. Stanton School, 1700 Christian St., and West Kensington’s Isaac A. Sheppard School had reason to celebrate following the vote that finalized five months of community meetings and testimonies surrounding the School District of Philadelphia’s Facilities Master Plan process. “This SRC has been very clear in its commitment to maintain its focus on student achievement while we work toward fiscal stability,” SRC Chairman Pedro Ramos said. “Tonight’s vote reflects those priorities. The decision to close a school is never an easy one, but we are doing what we need to do to improve the opportunities available to our students while working within our means. And we are doing it the right way, with a process that is open, transparent and inclusive.” The SRC’s proposal could have spelled the end of the successful school, whose enrollment is far below the District’s recommended range of 450 to 800 students. Faculty and staff’s dedication to maintaining Stanton’s strong academic standing shows in its Adequate Yearly Progress rating under the No Child Left Behind Act. Eighty percent of students also obtained advanced or proficient reading or math scores on ’10’s Pennsylvania System of School Assessment. The SRC emphasized that work is not done, and that commissioners will continue to work with Stanton to address remaining issues of rightsizing, building conditions and student services. XFINITY LIVE! continued from page 1 weekend a sensory symbol of the sports complex’s possibilities. “It has exceeded my wildest expectations,” Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider, who had foreseen opening today yet asked Cordish to have efforts finished for last week’s two Bruce Springsteen shows at the Wells Fargo Center, said. The 16-year-old facility, home to the Sixers and Flyers, for whom he serves as chairmen, enabled Snider to aid the City’s quest for a connector to spur economic growth. He found that link in 2007, uniting with the Maryland corporation responsible for similar spots in Atlantic City, Baltimore, Houston and St. Louis. “This is the realization of the vision of so many great people,” Cordish said before deferring to Nutter, a jobs advocate sure to rejoice over Xfinity Live’s! creation of 800 full-time positions. Feet from the beginning of the Walk of Champions, a path that leads to the new enclosure and that includes statues of Flyers Hall of Fame center Bobby Clarke and Sixers Hall of Fame forward Julius Irving, Nutter praised Philadelphia as the only city whose four major athletic teams play within a half-mile radius of one another. “There has been so much progress in the area over the last 16 years,” he said. “Let’s go celebrate the latest example.” Nutter joined the moguls, including Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko, to flip an oversized “Live!” switch that signaled their brainchild’s official status, with all peering at a fireworks display. “Everything turned out far better than the renderings,” Luukko said of the initiative, whose leaders he noted will explore adding a hotel in their next planning phase. “I am so eager for all to enjoy.” He dubbed The Broad Street Bullies Pub, complete with the memorabilia from the Flyers’ top period, which yielded Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and ’75, his top destination, as did Mitchell Nichols of the 2800 block of Morris Street. “I think they’ll win the Cup this year, too, but it’s great to see some old stuff,” the Grays Ferry resident said as he inspected samples of the franchise’s lore, including a cartoon depiction of the ’76 exhibition victory over the Soviet Red Army Team. “The atmosphere here is relaxed and should draw nice crowds for music, beer and food.” Nichols’ favorite haunt is situated among Chickie’s & Pete’s, Nick’s Roast Beef and The Original Philadelphia Cheesesteak Co., the components of The Philly Marketplace, Xfinity Live’s! centerpiece. They enjoyed a steady stream of patrons and seem destined to sate the cravings of the 5,000 consumers who can occupy the

total space. When mouths were not busy chewing food, they were spewing praise on how impressively the internal and external amenities struck them. No location lacked action, with the Spectrum Grille earning plaudits from seafood and steak lovers and the Victory Beer Hall receiving kudos from eager imbibers. The latter’s selection, live entertainment and 2,000-square-foot patio featuring a fire pit led Stacy Vargas to declare the other areas pretenders to the hall’s crown. “It’s brilliant here,” the resident of the 500 block of Carpenter Street said. “I’m going to make this whole weekend a celebration of this new vibe in my hometown.” THE QUEEN VILLAGE dweller planned to let the afternoon slip into the evening by sampling something from each space and winding down by watching the night’s free concert with the alternative rock band Third Eye Blind, a late ’90s hit maker. Her passion for the grounds bears the same sort of intensity that Snider had hoped to have apparent by asking Cordish to speed up preparations. “They are great partners,” Cordish said of Snider and Luukko after giving his family a tour of the district, which held a music festival and entertained viewers of the Fly-
ers’ loss to the Ottawa Senators, the Sixers’ win over the Atlanta Hawks and the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament’s semifinal tilts Saturday. “What we have helped to create is a model for development around stadiums that will be looked at all across the country and maybe internationally. It will put Philadelphia very much on the forefront.” Cordish then dined with his clan in the interior section of the NBC Sports Arena. The space offers a 32-foot diagonal LED HD television, with LED Rings displaying a sports ticker. The exterior’s On Demand Theater calls on a 24-foot-wide LED videoboard to show family-oriented movies and sports duels. Friday’s attendees also enjoyed assorted games on a 100-yard artificial turf field. Margaret Becker, of the 2500 block of South Marshall Street, took the Broad Street Line to the district but plans to use her car for subsequent adventures. For her future jaunts, she will not need to pay for parking on days minus events and will be able to avoid paying anything one hour after the day’s last occasion begins. Xfinity Live! personnel, in a December release, said free parking will be available after 9 p.m. for 95 percent of the year. “That’s a pretty high figure,” the Lower
Moyamensing inhabitant said before dining at the PBR Bar and Grill. Eager for its Tex-Mex fare, she expressed the most enthusiasm for riding the establishment’s mechanical bull. A 30-second date with the gyrating cattle left her laughing and coveting another. “That thing is going to be a smash,” she said. Cordish hopes the whole complex, which takes the place of the Spectrum, whose demolition ended in May, becomes a runaway hit. He will be checking in with Snider and Luukko weekly, with talks certain to include safety matters. Security officers ensured a peaceful progression and will continue to maintain order daily. All seemed idyllic Friday as Blackwood, N.J.’s Joanne and Jack Brunkle enjoyed the sunshine while on the patio. “I think the whole setup is great,” Jack Brunkle said as his wife nodded approvingly of her beau’s estimation of the outdoor seating, fire pit and entertainment stages. “It’s going to draw people from everywhere and will be a great place to come to in order to watch games.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. hristine Cox began training as a ballerina at age 10, which, she said, “is pretty late.” After a long career dancing on stages from Pennsylvania to Ohio, she and fellow dancer Matthew Neenan launched Ballet X. “We wanted to put in a company that was based in classical ballet and was about all new choreography from around the world,” Cox, who co-founded the business in 2005, said. “We wanted a ballet company that was structured around new work, bringing in classical but drawing a contemporary sense of it, a contemporary feel.” Cox, who moved to 21st and Catharine streets four years ago, is now co-directing the troupe’s newest production, “Spring Series 2012,” running at the Wilma Theater April 18 to 22. “We’re really excited about the world premiere of Jodie Gates,” Cox, 42, said. “It’s electric and passionate and very physical and athletic. And it’s pushing the dancers. It’s exciting to see. And, for us, the piece is taking us to the Joyce Theater in New York City for the first time.” The company will present the series, which consists of three pieces, at the Wilma and then at the Joyce in June. The other works rounding out the performances are by Edwaard Liang and Neenan. “What I love about this program is the diversity of the music,” the South of South resident, who codirects all of the company’s productions with Neenan, of Gerritt and Dickinson streets, said. “Mathew and I think it’s fun to present a wide range of movement, sounds and styles.”

It’s an opportunity to expand the whole night into almost a mini festival,” Cox said, though they are keeping the details a surprise. “And dance photography in the lobby, that’s the plan.” Along with the innovative format Cox stresses that BalletX is a refreshing performance for classical fans and the uninitiated. “I often hear of people’s perception of what ballet is and they say someone drags them in to see our performance and they leave bouncing out of the seat, saying ‘I’ve never seen a ballet like that before in my life. If I’d known, I would have been going to it for years,’” she said. COX GREW UP in West Philly, where she began her craft as early as she can remember. “I don’t think you could ever stop me from dancing. I was dancing from when I was very young. My family loved dance and music, so we’d dance in our living
room together,” she said. “My parents were very social and they’d throw parties and I’d always love dancing. I used to perform for friends and family on Christmas Eve — you couldn’t stop me from dancing.” It makes sense, then, that she followed in her sister Linda’s footsteps when she finally chose to start formal training. “My sister went to study adult ballet and I remember going with her to one class and that’s when I decided, with my mother, to go,” Cox said. She began her studies at the School of Pennsylvania Ballet where she continued for seven years before she was selected for a company position. “I was fortunate to start dancing professionally at the age of 17. I moved to Columbus, Ohio, to dance with a company called BalletMet,” Cox said. After a handful of years at BalletMet, she made a quick stop for a year to dance in New York City before returning to Philly. “I never wanted to leave; I wasn’t accepted [to the Pennsylvania Ballet] when I was 17 even though I was dancing with the company as a student for two years,” she said. “I wasn’t — the director at the time, I was not his [favorite] dancer. Fortunately, time passed and I grew a lot as an artist and just took some time. The director that took

over the company after really liked me.” Cox danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet until ’06, and when she left, she and Neenan had already hit the ground running with BalletX. The two dove full force into the many facets of running a successful venture. “It’s so much work and it’s actually just turning out to be more work than I ever anticipated, which is great,” she said. “I did not plan 10 years ago, ‘Let’s start a ballet company.’ It was a twist of fate and saying ‘yes’ to an opportunity.” Today BalletX boasts 10 dancers, including Tara Keating of 21st and Christian streets, and a steady influx of choreographers who’d like to work with the group. Though they are still in search of a permanent space — while they currently practice at The Rock School, 1101 S. Broad St. — the Wilma residency that began in ’07 has set an interesting precedent for the other local troupes. “Our relationship with the Wilma, I think a lot of people are looking at how well this collaboration has worked. Other organizations have taken notice and how this is really a terrific opportunity for both organizations,” Cox said. “They have been very gracious and generous in opening their doors for us.”
The company is continuing to expand and though Philadelphia is home, they are taking their art on the road. The company will be performing at the Laguna Dance Festival in California April 13 to 15, Spring to Dance Festival in St. Louis May 25, Vail International Dance Festival in Colorado Aug. 5 to 8 and New York City Summer Stage in Central Park Aug. 15. The directors are already looking a head to ’13, and Cox is considering the first New York City residency, as well as an exciting new project already in the works. “Next year we’re going to present a work, if we can raise enough money, an outstanding work by Nicolo Fonte. It’s about the aging process and just how beautiful a ballet could be that would showcase and address what we’re all going through in different stages in our life,” Cox said. “We’re inviting two senior, significantly older dancers to be a part of the project. “I’m looking forward to that. We’re looking for support in the community to make that happen. We’d have sets for the first time so we’d be taking it to the next level.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

Cardella
By Tom Cardella Columnist
Florida dress code Columnist’s note: This column is not meant to make fun of a tragedy, but sometimes humor can best make a serious point.
I
own five hoodies. When I wear a hoodie, it’s not a political statement. It’s just my ears get cold. I also am a white geezer who hasn’t lost a fight in 60 years. I haven’t had a fight in 60 years. One of our local bar/restaurants has a sign outside the entrance that warns one must remove their hoodie before entering. Another famous establishment has an unofficial policy that one can’t wear a baseball cap backwards. Geraldo Rivera believes wearing a hoodie was as much the reason for Trayvon Martin getting shot as anything else. I think I sense a trend here toward dress codes for minorities. Spike Lee tweeted what he thought was George Zimmerman’s address. Spike, as you know, wrote and directed “Do the Right Thing.” Spike didn’t do the right thing. He got the address wrong and apologized to the elderly couple who did live there. But what if he had gotten the address right? Would that have been much better? Can we all agree that doubling down on vigilantes won’t bring justice to Trayvon? A friend told me a bank in the suburbs requires anyone wearing a hoodie, a baseball cap or sunglasses to remove them before entering the bank. My bifocals are transitional lenses. If I had to remove my glasses before banking, I would probably collide with the teller’s window. Why not add baggy pants, sneakers and burqas to the list? In fact, if they can require you to wear a jacket and tie at a fancy restaurant, why not to a store or bank? As “Curb Your Enthusiasm” once showed, some folks would feel more secure if all AfricanAmerican males wore glasses. But as Jon Stewart noted on his show, please, no bow ties, we’ve got this Nation of Islam fear we’re dealing with. I am against a rush to judgment, but this has been more like a slow waltz to justice. Incidentally, I admit to a bias against Florida since the dangling chad thing helped give the Supreme Court a rationale for installing George W. Bush in the White House. At this writing, here’s what we do know about the shooting of Martin. Zimmerman
is believed to have carried his gun on the town watch while his colleagues say they were told to leave their guns at home. That makes me want to sing the old Johnny Cash tune “Don’t take your guns to town, boy. Leave your guns at home, Bill. Don’t take your guns to town.” Zimmerman supposedly tracked Trayvon even though the 911 dispatcher warned him not to do so and he agreed not to do so. The tape records Zimmerman using the word “coons” or if you believe his friend “goons.” I guess goons is qualitatively better because it is non-racial, but why would Zimmerman describe an unarmed kid as a goon? Zimmerman’s claim that he acted in self-defense is not backed up by ABC video that shows him as unmarked. There is someone heard crying on the tape. Zimmerman claims he is the one crying, not Trayvon. But since Zimmerman emerged unmarked and had a gun and Trayvon got killed, who would you bet was doing the crying? On the positive side for Zimmerman, his gun is legal and he was not wearing a hoodie. The police decided the weight of evidence was on Zimmerman’s side and did not charge him or take away his gun. May I digress for a moment? While I am partial to wearing a hoodie when it’s windy and cold, I think politicians and celebrities are just opportunists when they wear hoodies in public. Besides, they really look silly wearing a hoodie on the floor of Congress when they are actually trolling for votes. It would probably bother a lot of women if George Clooney began wearing a hoodie. Even the Miami Heat have taken a team photo wearing hoodies. Personally, I don’t think a hoodie makes LeBron James any more loveable. Kim Kardashian will soon be seen wearing a sequin-studded hoodie any day now. The KKK wears a kind of hoodie. I have always thought the white sheets of the Klan were inspired by Casper the Friendly Ghost. I never understood why a KKK member has to be completely covered from head to toe. You think they are covering up a really bad wardrobe? There is a distinct possibility Yankee pitcher CC Sabathia is in violation of the Florida racial dress code. When the Yankees visit Tampa, CC risks being locked up for wearing his flat brimmed Yankees cap sideways. In the end, I hope and fervently believe justice will prevail, even if it is in the state of Florida. SPR

‘Titans’ is a lost battle
Persus (Sam Worthington), left, with the help of Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), right, attempts to save his father, Zeus, and the Greek world from Hades and the Titans.
By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer
P
erhaps the best thing to be said about “Wrath of the Titans” is that if you buy a ticket, odds are you won’t be able to see the full mess on screen. Yet another insufferable bit of post-converted 3-D, this cash-driven sequel to the equally ugly “Clash of the Titans” remake is as dark and dreary as they come, grayed out by after-effects that are supposed to enhance the picture. And yet, it’s somehow for the best, seeing as the content that’s being obscured here is just one giant, cacophonous snooze, and a filter, however dirty, makes the whole ordeal less painful. Obnoxiously over-confident in every bit of its execution, the film, directed by “Battle: Los Angeles” helmer Jonathan Liebesman, regards its characters like every viewer has been awaiting their returns with baited breath, when really, they’re only here because the first film raked in a global take of about $500 million. “You’re Perseus, right?” one side player asks Sam Worthington’s hero. “Release the Kraken, and all that?” Yes, that’s him, and we’re sure of it because everyone is repeatedly announced in Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson’s rudimentary script. “Andromeda!” “Ares!” “Zeus!” The whole class is present, screaming right along with roars from Underworld bad boy Kronos, but that doesn’t mean any of it warrants your attendance. There’s a definite place for films that simply offer rollicking adventure, but this series can’t even get that basic pleasure right. It’s one thing to deliver nonstop action, but it’s quite another to serve up a string of barely coherent sequences, edited with the chief concern of maximizing the
crunching sounds. Unless you love sandy, computer-graphic epics with every ounce of your impressionable, resilient soul, then “Wrath of the Titans” is a profound waste of time. And as for Kronos, that monstrously giant villain who dwarfs the Kraken and is made of fire and brimstone, he registers as a gross embodiment of Hollywood greed — a massive, multimillion-dollar effect devised to get butts in seats. Don’t buy it, and by Zeus, don’t buy a ticket.

Recommended Rental The Iron Lady PG-13 Available Tuesday A cartoon of a biopic, Phyllida Lloyd’s Margaret Thatcher film “The Iron Lady” proves the director hasn’t learned a whole lot since piloting the dreadful “Mamma Mia,” but it’d be a sin to miss Meryl Streep’s towering performance as the titular sovereign, an oft-derided monster the master actress imbues with a soul. Streep recently pulled off a surprise Academy Award win for her work, and in recent years, it’s hard to think of a more rewarding Oscar moment. Preparing for the big day means planning a multitude of details; everything from the flower arrangements to that something blue must be decided upon well in advance of the ceremony. Here are some tips to help ensure your big day goes off without a hitch.
The Big Decisions The decision to get married is the first of many big decisions you will be making in the weeks and months to come. Here are some things to consider right away: · Pick a date. Talk with your fiancé and family (and your fiancé’s family) about potential wedding dates to ensure the important people in both your lives will be able to take part. · Select your guests. The number of guests you invite will directly influence the cost of your wedding. · Set a budget. Budgeting for your wedding is crucial, as this will have a great impact on every other aspect of your day, as well as your honeymoon. Plan for a little wiggle room for unexpected expenses. · Choose a location. Because most popular bridal spots are just that — popular — you may want to start searching for a location quickly. · Organize the bridal party. Make careful decisions about who you want supporting you leading up to the big day, and who will be displayed in front of everyone in your life. · Pick a style. Many brides choose wedding styles that are reflected in their save-the-dates, invitations, ceremonies, receptions and thank you cards. Choosing a theme and color scheme in the beginning will help narrow down options later. Photos courtesy of Getty Images

Square Peg By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

amous quotations and sayings are among a writer’s best friends. Many come from Shakespeare and the Bible. We are familiar with the adage “can’t fit a square peg in a round hole.” I wondered where the saying comes from since Square Peg is the name of a new restaurant near Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Edward Bulwer Lytton coined the metaphor in the late 19th century. It conjures up an image of a person who dares to be different. One chef who dares to be different is Matt Levin. I gave him high accolades when he was executive chef at LaCroix at the Rittenhouse. His creativity and use of farm fresh ingredients never failed in dish after dish. Now he is at the helm at Square Peg. I wondered what he had up his culinary sleeve. After a long day of shopping, Sandy and I nipped into Square Peg. The place has a warm welcoming neighborhood feel. Square Peg was packed at 6 p.m. but we were fortunate to get a table for two. There’s a long bar, two televisions, a large, exposed brick wall and comfortable banquettes. I sipped a Rob Roy ($13.83) and was immediately wowed by Levin’s downhome menu of comfort foods. Chau, our delightful server, answered our questions and we made our selections. Tacos in a bag ($10.50) was a whimsical way of serving carnitas and corn chips. Levin took an individual bag of Fritos and placed tasty shreds of tender, juicy pork on top of the chips. He topped the pork with chopped scallions and queso crema. Peking Inn: 20th St. and Penrose Ave., 215-271-1389, $$

Some shredded iceberg lettuce was placed in a large bowl with the chips. Sandy and I dove in and immediately fell in love. Carnitas was a first for her, so now I can tempt her with my version at home. Grilled romaine ($9) consisted of two large hearts of crisp, fresh romaine, which hit the grill and then the large plate. Levin called the dressing, which was drizzled on the plate, onion caramel. The smoky aroma and flavor of the romaine pleased our taste buds. Fortunately for me, I had dibs on the large frico that came with the salad since Sandy does not care for it. Next up was a large platter of fish and chips ($16), which would have delighted even the most finicky Englishman. Levin used scrod, or baby cod, that was dipped in a malt batter and crispy fried to a deep golden brown. The fish was sweet, succulent and tender inside. It flaked beautifully on the fork and was not one bit overcooked. The pile of French fries was equally as flavorful. They came slightly salted and we had a bit of trouble finishing them. Portions at Square Peg are most generous. There is a fine selection of sides ($5) on the bill of fare. The roasted cauliflower aroused my interest. Bite-size bits of cauliflower were topped with lemon juice, sesame seeds and sumac and served at room temperature. “It’s like a cauliflower salad,” Sandy said. Both of us recommend it. You cannot miss dessert ($7) at Square Peg. Chocolate pudding pie is not a pie.

Levin’s sense of whimsy also was evident here. Deep, bittersweet chocolate pudding, prepared in the French manner, was placed into a small Mason jar with layers of pretzel dust which served as the crust. It was bittersweet and salty, just like I prefer. As a girl, I would dip salty pretzels into chocolate ice cream. Levin’s pudding is second to none. Service was excellent although two servers felt the need to talk incessantly, which I find extremely annoying. I did not want to hear descriptions of the dishes as they were placed on the table. Chau, our server, did not do this, however. A woman next to me was dining alone. All she wanted to do was enjoy her meal and read her

SOUTh PHILLY REVIEW I April 5, 2012
aster is holiest day on the Christian calendar. I asked some of my friends about their plans. Many of them are going to a restaurant for Sunday brunch. My Greek friends will celebrate Easter one week later with a hearty meal featuring roast lamb and Greek Easter breads and sweets. Several weeks ago, while chef Joseph Scarpone and I were cooking in my kitchen, I asked him what he and his extended family eat on Easter Sunday. “We go to my aunt’s house and she always serves ham,” he said. “I think many Italians have become Americanized, especially on Easter.” I did a highly unscientific survey and discovered that Italians prepare roast lamb, but many Italian-Americans go the ham route. So do my Irish friends. Pork takes pride of place on the holiday table. It is, indeed, the other white meat.
Pigs are bred to be leaner than they were years ago. Cuts to consider include pork belly, crown roast of pork, pork-loin roast, pork chops and pork shoulder. Certain fruits and vegetables enhance this main course beautifully. Pork and apples is a perfect culinary marriage. Any type of potato also is welcome here. Cabbage, one of my favorite vegetables, is not just for serving in the autumn and winter. I prepare it year-round. Fresh English peas are in the market now. I like to prepare them the French way with Boston lettuce. Ham is a fine holiday roast because the leftovers can be turned into a myriad of dishes. The bone goes into the kettle for soup. I would serve a slightly chilled Beaujolais with this Easter meal. For those guests who prefer white wine, chardonnay with a buttery, oaky flavor fills the bill nicely.

A West Passyunk basketball product led her Texas school to its best season and an NCAA Tournament berth. By Joseph Myers
unit traveled to Baton Rouge, La.’s Pete Maravich Assembly Center to face fourthseeded Penn State University. “Win or lose, we knew it would be a memorable night,” she said. Brown tallied her 12th double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the Nittany Lions proved too experienced and claimed an 85-77 win. “It was a great experience,” she said. “Even in defeat, I took good things from the game.”

f Gloria Brown were an actress, she would likely land supporting roles and probably top the star thespian’s performance each time. Similar hardwood scenarios played out constantly this year, as the University of Texas at El Paso senior forward proved substitutes can be as devastating as starters. The native of 18th and McKean streets made the season a 33game course in misery for her foes, propelling the Miners to 29 wins, two titles and a trip to the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Championship. “I loved having my role and bringing energy to the team,” the graduate of Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., said of being the Conference USA squad’s first bench insertion. Logging 20.3 minutes per game, the 6-foot-2 interior intimidator averaged 12.1 points and 8.8 rebounds. Those totals led coach Keitha Adams’ roster, as did the 22-year-old’s 52.7 field goal percentage and 81.6 free thrown conversion rate. Her 97 blocks more than doubled her nearest teammate’s figure and tied her opponents’ tallies. Her statistics support her stance that maintaining desire and playing hard build confidence no matter how frequent one’s time on court is. “It’s all about producing during your moments,” Brown, in her second year at UTEP after stops at North Carolina State and the Texas-based Trinity Valley Community College, said of capitalizing on her opportunity to achieve acclaim. She has not yearned for praise directly, favoring the belief that she constantly needs to improve her game, but copious kudos has come to her. For her stellar regular season, Brown earned her second straight conference Sixth Player of the Year award. Having dominated on the secondary level by registering more than 1,800 points, 1,200 rebounds and 400 blocks for East Passyunk Crossing’s Saints, she knew the collegiate game would have a faster pace and would demand more discipline. “I’ve done well to work on my entire iden-

tity, on and off the court,” the former McDonald’s All-America finalist said of her journey from South Philadelphia to El Paso. Her maturation has included improving her grades, which she counts as one of her collegiate career’s biggest outcomes. Summer classes will help her to graduate with a multidisciplinary studies degree, which she will one day use to become a coach. “I would love to be on the D-I level to help girls to expand their game,” the baller, whose hoops start occurred at DiSilvestro Playground, 1701 S. 15th St., said. “I could really see myself succeeding at that.” Loyal to her tutor’s trust, Brown also gave her fidelity to her teammates, making sure their off-the-court joviality created a solid on-court belief in one another. “There is such a light vibe at UTEP,” she said. “We have fun but we know how to
get the job done.” This season, they did a more thorough job than any other UTEP men’s or women’s squad in the win department. Their final triumph, March 10’s 69-65 victory over Tulane University at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, earned the Miners the conference tournament crown, a fine complement to their regular season championship. The win booked their spot in the national competition and showed that Brown enjoys pressure situations. Against the Green Wave, she deposited 20 points and 11 rebounds. Her big-game heroics garnered her most valuable players honors, with that distinction and her increased grade point average giving her a memorable couple of feats. The third jewel in her senior campaign came March 18, when her 13th-seeded
WITH SUCH ACCOLADES and statistics, one might find it hard to believe Brown feels she requires tinkering, but she deems adjustments necessary if she is to find her name on the roster of a WNBA or overseas club. “I still have to become better at putting the ball on the floor,” she said. “I have solid fundamentals, I think, but everyone can stand to improve because everybody is being judged.” She spoke from experience, as Friday and Saturday found her in Denver at the WNBA combine, a showcase for players hoping to impress scouts who flocked to the Colorado capital as part of the ladies’ Final Four. “I am looking into finding an agent and putting a lot of thought into my future,” she said. She considers her decision to attend the 98-year-old school one of her best, as it has intensified her knack for both joking and being serious about putting stock in herself. “There are great players everywhere,” she said. “Texas, Philly, it doesn’t matter. I like to have fun, but I have a different mentality on the floor.” She enjoyed interacting with teammates and Adams, dubbing them friends and confidants, and will take with her their commitment to excellence as she seeks the next hurdle. Even if it proves daunting, the master rebounder will surely bounce back. “I’m ready for whatever,” she said. “I’ve had great help along the way.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. (never known to fail). O Most Beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful Vine Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here You are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor my necessity (Make Request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. Then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. B.P.
