With conviction and curiosity, he capped four emotional days of regaining the ability to walk, a gift that a 1994 diving accident

To the Editor: The governor’s proposed Pennsylvania budget is all about cuts. Let’s pause a moment and think about the children. This is not a time to cut the ground from under them. Close to 100,000 at-risk children across the state — including thousands in each of the five Delaware Valley counties — still lack access to quality early-childhood education, which is the foundation to success in school and beyond. Funding early education makes financial sense. Investment in quality early education provides substantial savings down the road. Long-term studies have shown that such investment lowers special education and grade retention costs, increases high school graduation rates and earning levels, and saves costs in juvenile justice and social services. The governor promised, as a candidate, to increase funding to double the number of children in high-qual-

ity early-childhood programs. He has been very public about how he is keeping a promise to not raise taxes, but we haven’t heard a word from him on breaking this promise to the children. Let’s ask the governor what kind of a promise-keeper he is. It’s time to put a conversation about new revenues back on the table. There are a variety of ways of tapping revenue sources in the state that could fund early childhood and other critical social services: Closing corporate tax loopholes, taxing cigars and smokeless tobacco, taxing shale gas drillers beyond the current very minimal impact fee. These are all standard practice in the great majority of other states and could bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue without adversely affecting regular citizens. Let’s not buy into a false sense of scarcity and leave our smallest children farther and farther behind. We can do better than that. P

olice arrested a Florida woman 26 hours after she allegedly robbed a Queen Village store. Janice Ann Nick, 47, of Key West, Fla., allegedly entered Queen Village Mini Market, 246 Christian St., and pointed a gun at a 23-year-old employee, who was waiting on a 79-year-old woman, at 3:55 p.m. April 12, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Nick is believed to have demanded cash from the register, so the cashier handed over about $100, Tolliver said. Nick also allegedly snatched a bag containing $2,200 from behind the counter before fleeing eastbound on Christian in a lightcolored Buick Park Avenue. The following day police spotted the auto with a matching license plate number on the unit block of Vine Street, Tolliver said. Nick allegedly was sleeping in the driver’s seat when officers asked her to get out of the car. A loaded firearm was recovered from the vehicle, which was discovered to be stolen from North Carolina. Nick was charged with two counts of theft, receiving stolen property, as well as aggravated assault, robbery, terroristic threats, unauthorized use of a vehicle and related offenses.

Retail ruckus A Grays Ferry man was pinned for allegedly stealing from a City Avenue store and attacking an employee who confronted him. Surveillance video supposedly captured John Bailey, 36, of the 1300 block of South Hollywood Street, placing items inside his jacket prior to exiting CVS at about 3:53 p.m. John Bailey March 6, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit. When an employee tried to stop him, Bailey allegedly hit the worker, which resulted in severe lacerations, before fleeing eastbound on Haverford Avenue. An anonymous tip to Southwest Detective Division identified Bailey, who was arrested April 1 and charged with aggravated assault, robbery, retail theft, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault and recklessly endangering another

person, according to court records. Bailey had guilty pleas and convictions for thefts dating back to 1997, according to court records. He also has three open retail theft cases in the 12th District, as well as in Delaware and Montgomery counties.

Puncture wound A deliveryman was assaulted as an unknown man tried to steal his truck in Pennsport. A 36-year-old was making a delivery to Linsky Pharmacy, 1701 S. Second St., when an unknown man pushed him from behind as he entered his auto, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As the victim turned, the man said, “Shut … up. I have a gun. Give me the keys.” He then pulled out a screwdriver and stabbed the worker in the left shoulder. The two struggled, but when the man started screaming, a crossing guard scurried over, which caused the offender to flee westbound on Morris. A medic unit treated the man’s small puncture wound at the scene, Tolliver said. The offender was described as Hispanic, in his mid-20s, 6-foot-5, thin, having gelled hair and a beard and wearing a black and white Adidas hoodie and blue jeans. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635 or visit phillypolice. com/forms.

Adolescents attack senior An elderly man was walking in Passyunk Square when three youths whacked him in the face for no apparent reason. The 66-year-old was strolling along the 900 block of Annin Street at 1:15 a.m. Sunday when the trio hit him twice in the head with a baseball bat before running west on Annin Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A medic transported him to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to treat facial injuries. The youngsters did not steal anything from the man. Police did not provide a description of the offenders. police charities. Opening Ryan’s eyes to the benefits, McCann convinced him to add Segway presence on East Passyunk Avenue and increase the district’s bike patrol, which will add four more trained officers in June. “Now they come in handy down here with the traffic,” Ryan said. The Northeast resident started out as an officer in the 6th District and the Stakeout Unit before traveling throughout the department taking roles in the 35th District as sergeant; Central Detective Division as lieutenant; and 18th District, Internal Affairs Bureau, Safety Office/Staff Services, 23rd District, Command Inspections Bureau and Recruit Background Investigation Unit as a captain before landing his current role. “His police experience alone is invaluable,” Bologna, who heads Police Service Area 1 and the South Street Mini Station, 905 S. South St., said. “He’s worked in a multitude of assignments, which I think makes him a valuable commander.” The St. Joseph’s University graduate has various components comprising his district — formerly split at Tasker Street prior to the 2010 merger — such as South Street, Columbus Boulevard shopping centers, the sports complex and Xfinity Live!, as well as a high-crime section bounded by Dickinson, Fourth, Ritner and Ninth streets. “There’s enough crime down here to keep us all busy and concerned,” Ryan said. THOSE WHO WORK under Ryan noted his willingness to implement effective and innovative crime-prevention tactics. The district’s Police Service Areas cut through already established neighborhoods when Ryan and Lt. Joseph Bologna, who formerly held a post at the 1st District, 2301 S. 24th St., arrived. Within a month of its undertaking, a solution was presented, Bologna said. “We broke it down for all the communities to stay in their framework,” the Passyunk Square native, who now calls Northeast Philly home, said. “That was one of the big problems when we got here.” Administrative Lt. James McCann influenced Ryan’s exercise regime, as the pair cycle Sundays along the Schuylkill River in order to train for the Tour de Shore, a summertime 65-mile bike race from Center City to Atlantic City, N.J. that benefits

eing a police officer runs in 3rd District Capt. Michael Ryan’s blood as his father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather have had the profession, though none reached the rank of captain. Ryan made his way around the room with a smile on his face and shook the hands of each person, who congratulated him for 35 years of service to the Philadelphia Police Department, at a ceremony at 3rd District headquarters, 1300 S. 11th St., Friday. “It was a very big surprise,” Ryan, who has held his latest post 18 months as of yesterday, said. “I was actually going to training.” He also had planned to tend to an afternoon task afterward, but asked his wife of 26 years to take care of it. “He doesn’t even know I’m here,” Mary Jo Ryan, a former Packer Park resident, said before her husband entered the room. “Of course, he scheduled me to go to the vet and I had to call the vet and say, ‘I can’t get there.’” His co-workers insisted he stick around as they honored 3rd District Officer Susan Paul for her 30 years on the job. While they also honored Paul, who grew up at 30th and Tasker streets and currently resides at 15th and Ritner streets, they failed to mention his share of recognition. “All too often we take these milestones for granted,” Deputy Commission Kevin Bethel, a former 17th District captain, said before taking a friendly jab at Ryan. “… Mike, I have to tell you this: Thirty-five years ago, I was in ninth grade.”

SPRING CLEANUP continued from page 1 Rachel Bicksler, a Center City Di Bruno Bros. worker, as well as an avid supporter and past volunteer of the citywide initiative, coordinated the Ninth Street activity with co-worker Ashleigh Havermann. “I think it’s a great opportunity for people to give back to either where they live or where they work, and having just a bunch of people come together and help out,” the Bucks County resident, who hopes to draw more volunteers for next year, said. With the strong support of Bill Mignucci Jr., Di Bruno Bros. president and the business association’s team project partner, volunteers, including 11 City Year members, were able to give back to the heart of the historic corridor that dates back to the 1880s. “I think that especially in an area like the Italian Market where there are so many vendors, it really allows for a lot of trash to collect,” City Year member Sydney Congdon said. “So being able to pick that up really made us feel like we were not only helping the vendors, but helping the customers and everybody kind of comes through.” Some City Year members even cleaned their way through parts of Washington Avenue and down alleyways leading off from Ninth Street, Congdon, of Eighth and Morris streets, said. “We had some of the neighbors come out and thank us, and it really made us feel like part of the community,” she said. Besides hosting the cleanup, Bicksler coordinated with other Di Bruno Bros. locations to collect donations for the South Ninth Street Businessmen’s Association, in hopes of keeping up the efforts. Her employer replenished volunteers by providing sandwich platters and coolers filled with drinks, in addition to raffling off gift cards for the gourmet food store. With 347 other projects taking place across Philadelphia, this year had the most projects ever registered, Deputy Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams, said noting the program, which Mayor Michael Nutter created to beautify the city upon taking office in 2008, is driven by the community’s volunteers. “It’s an identity location in [volunteers’] neighborhoods that they want to see addressed, and we come in and support it,” Williams said. “And we think that’s the key to long-term sustainability — people identifying their own problems and us trying to support it as government.” Since Nutter was unable to make it to the event as planned because he was attending a funeral service for fallen firefighters, Williams appeared in his place to spread encouraging words to volunteers equipped with brooms and plastic bags that were sweeping the ground and collecting trash.

“I think this is a great awareness campaign, as well as a cleanup, to let people know how spirited and how big of an issue this is,” Williams said. ABOUT SEVEN BLOCKS away at Jefferson Square Park, 300 Washington Ave., and Sacks Playground, 400 Washington Ave., greenlimbs, a nonprofit dedicated to urban sustainability, took last year’s cleanup to a whole new level. Joining greenlimbs in its second year of participation were Friends of Jefferson Square Park members, about 60 students and staffers from George W. Nebinger School, 601 Carpenter St., and area volunteers. “It was really a positive experience today,” Nebinger Home and School President Maureen Fratantoni said. “We had many, many people from the community and Nebinger School come out and help.” Since last year’s spring cleanup, volunteers have kept the Pennsport park and Dickinson Narrows playground tidy, setting a foundation for bigger projects to flourish this year, greenlimbs co-founder and project coordinator Lauren Leonard, a Thirdand-Bainbridge-streets resident, said. “There’s more happening in the park today that was sort of able to happen because a lot of the [initial] cleaning has already taken place,” Leonard said. Volunteers, accompanied by 1st District Councilman Mark Squilla, Queen Village Neighbors Association President Jeff Hornstein and Nebinger Principal Dr. Ralph Burnley, were not only picking up litter, but also weeding, gardening and spreading mulch that Urban Jungle, 1526 E. Passyunk Ave., donated to further beautify the area. “I think that this is a good example of what’s really happening in the neighborhoods,” Leonard said. “It’s a lot of people engaged and enjoying their time together — it’s families, it’s all kinds of groups of people and really diverse crowds in our neighborhoods.” Fellow Third-and-Bainbridge resident Christian Dunbar, who is the co-founder of greenlimbs, also noted the importance of getting Nebinger students involved in the community. “It shows [the children] that people in and around their neighborhood do care about them and that they should also care about the environment they live in.” Whole Foods, 929 South St., provided an environmentally-friendly lunch for the student volunteers at the start of the Philadel-

City Year volunteers, top left, joined DiBruno Bros. and Italian Market neighbors, top right, to spruce up the historic Ninth Street corridor Saturday. Meanwhile volunteers of all ages, above and right, helped to make spaces like Jefferson Square Park and Sacks Playground more green and less covered in litter. phia Bobcats baseball game. The youngsters enjoyed a break on the bleachers, watched the game and soaked up the sun while prizes were awarded to trivia winners. About 10 volunteers from the recreational softball team from The Pub on Passyunk East, 1501 E. Passyunk Ave., opted out of the lunch break to spruce up the grassy parcel where they usually play. “We’ve just been cleaning up the field, looking for litter, sweeping, just picking up some weeds, replenishing some of the playing field,” Julie Haynes, from 11th and Jackson streets, said. Cleanup coordinators invited all volunteers to a family-friendly happy hour at Paddy Whacks Pub, 150 South St., directly following the cleanup from 3 to 5 p.m. Citywide 12,115 volunteers removed 1,000,940 pounds of trash and 40,340 pounds of recyclables, according to statistics from the Mayor’s Office. Dunbar hopes that people will continue to “Keep up the Sweep Up,” as the slogan

goes, and promises that greenlimbs will aid in the maintaining of the park. The cleanup doesn’t stop here, Dunbar said. “I would say maybe it starts here,” she said. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

10 SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW I April 19, 2012

EXOSKELETON continued from page 1 tive Rowing, whom Penn Partners contacted last month. A rapid response to an e-mail initiated his selection, and he spent the pre-demonstration time reflecting on his fate. “I have had bouts with fear,” the graduate of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, 2329 S. Third St., and St. John Neumann High School, formerly 2600 Moore St., said of his quest to ambulate. “I had thought something would keep me from these moments.” Sullivan has never lacked motivation and argued the timing of his Jersey Shore episode inflamed his will even more. Following an Aug. 21, ’94 Jet Ski ride, he dove into the water to rinse off, with his head striking submerged wood. Rehabilitation ensued, with much of his recovery focusing on how to prepare for fatherhood, as he suffered misfortune when his partner Donna, whom he wed in 2000, was one month pregnant with their son Michael. “My top concern was holding him,” Sullivan said of his offspring, a junior at Center City’s Roman Catholic High School. “Eventually all went well and Michael would treat my wheelchair as just another toy.” Their relationship has proven so mutually rewarding that Sullivan, having regained arm mobility, last year took up tennis at his child’s urging. His participation has maintained his strength and heightened his resolve, as he claimed two wins at last month’s NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour’s Pensacola Open in Florida. Enhancing his upper extremity stamina helped to build his candidacy for Ekso, a 45-pound robot that Ekso Bionics, a seven-year-old Californiabased company introduced two years ago as eLEGS, or Exoskeleton Lower Extremity Gait System. He met height and weight requirements, displayed proficient sitting balance and possessed a suitable range of motion in his leg joints. Ekso Bionics renamed eLEGS “Ekso” last year, the same time it began interactions with rehabilitation clinics to test its creation, according to physical therapist clinical manager Melissa Pullia. The entity contacted Allentown’s Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network, making it the nation’s third facility to receive an exoskeleton. As Penn Partners is a joint venture of the network and Penn Medicine, it became the sixth site last month. “It was important for us to make this technology available quickly for our patients,” Executive Director Lisa Marsilio said of operationalizing the project, including patient selection, in less than three weeks. Sullivan, who had loved jogging five miles daily, eagerly accepted Marsilio’s offer to regain even more belief. All users have the Ekso strapped over their cloth-

After exercising his legs, Michael Sullivan beamed over his opportunity to be among the city’s first users of the new technology. S ta f f P h o t o s b y G r e g B e z a n i s

ing with Velcro and clips, with a physical therapist operating it through a controller. Though it does not grant a wearer total autonomy, it can promote increased feelings of independence, and the Whitman resident yearned for his boost as his helpers fastened the gadget and reviewed a procedural checklist. “Wheelchair or not, you still have to live life to the fullest,” he said. A FEW DEEP breaths and gulps came from Sullivan before rising, but he became a paragon of precision. Swaying tested his ability to shift his weight, with his right foot soon after thrusting forward to commence his crusade across the floor. Pullia, guiding him and his assistants, noted after his treks that 70 patients had undergone screenings, with 63 passing and taking as few as 81 and as many as 638 first-session steps. Sullivan started his return to stability April 9 and managed 130 strides, with 125 and 300 over the next two days. Striving for quality over quantity, he completed his initial walk with sturdy concentration, balancing downward glances and straight-ahead stares. A well-deserved exhalation followed the first foray, with Sullivan excited for more. “This is cutting-edge technology,” he said to onlookers. “I love that it let me be

eye to eye with people again.” Sullivan has often shown nimble footwork, as he has enjoyed a four-decade relationship with the Mummers Fancy Brigade Association, lending his talent to the Jokers New Years Brigade, 1602 S. Second St. He also has shown an acumen for enterprise, serving as vice president for Collingswood, N.J.’s Standard Office Solutions. Last week, however, his business was producing a steady gait. Few directional variations occurred in his subsequent attempts, as Pullia and the others complimented his willingness to make the session a 60-minute lesson in realizing, to alter a popular Bible verse, that one’s spirit and flesh can be strong. His face gave away few hints at his handling of the pressure of again being erect, though he entertained more than thoughts of letting his left foot follow his right and keeping his arms steadily on his walker. “I was thinking ‘This is fantastic,’” he said. Breaks staved off fatigue and left Sullivan meditative and beholden. “I’m trying to but I can’t find words to explain what I’m feeling,” he said before his final three journeys. “I’m in pain but it’s good pain. I feel so fortunate to be among the recipients of such innovative thinking.” The exoskeleton can assist those between

5 f t 2 and 5-foot-2 d 66-foot-4 f t 4 and d who h weigh i h no more than 220 pounds. It allows wearers to walk in a straight line, stand for extended periods and from a sitting position and sit from a standing position through a battery providing more than six hours of power. According to exoskeleton-suit.com, Ekso Bionics may market the robot to individuals next year. “We are seeking those who would want the therapy,” Joan Levicoff, Penn Partners site manager for outpatient rehabilitation, said. “Today felt even better,” Sullivan added Friday. “I am not as sore and am eager for what’s to come.” He noted Penn Partners is finalizing his rehabilitation schedule, and he hopes for an upright future. Although he began the week literally looking up at everyone, he ended it by figuratively having everyone looking up to him. “The goal is to walk again,” Sullivan said. “I would love to be able to jog at least one mile again.” SPR For more information, visit phillyrehab.com. Accounting for a seat

How will you ensure tax dollars are used efficiently and effectively, if elected? I pledge to be more than a “bean counter.” I promise to use performance audits to produce common-sense comparisons to save money by offering best practices solutions. Since I’m not a politician, I won’t be afraid to expose waste, fraud, incompetence and mismanagement — no matter whose toes I step on. I’ll be your fiscal watchdog, and I won’t be afraid to bite.

A Passyunk Square native has his sights set on becoming the state’s auditor general.

F

rank Pinto, originally from 10th and Fernon streets, will be on Tuesday’s ballot vying for the Republican nomination for auditor general. The individual elected will serve as the state’s fiscal watchdog. Jack Wagner currently holds the position, but due to a twoterm limit, cannot seek reelection. Pinto, 67, who moved to Dauphin County 35 years ago, will face state Rep. John Maher of Allegheny County. The winner will compete against state Rep. Eugene A. DePasquale of York County, a Democrat, for the seat in November. Family: Frank and Antoinette Santoro Pinto, parents; Rose Amorosi, Kathleen Bilotta, Mildred Masino, Geraldine Scardino, Ann Marie Pinto and James Pinto, siblings; Barbara H. Pinto, wife; and Carole Lynn Proferes, Debra Martini, Karen Hackimer, Marissa Burt, Tory Pinto, children Education: St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, 913 Pierce St.; La Salle College

High School; bachelor’s degree at La Salle University; master’s degree at Villanova University and doctoral studies at Bryn Mawr College Experience: Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers president/CEO; La Salle College, Villanova University, Glassboro State College and University of Pennsylvania Fels Institute of Government professor; Goodwill Industries board member; and Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition Pink Ribbon Awardee

Frank Pinto

How do you feel you are qualified to fulfill the duties of the position? Growing up the youngest of seven in South Philadelphia, you learn immediately the basic values of life: Love of God, love of your family and love of your country. You learn respect and dignity, how to listen and then how to lead. You learn the value of life and of a dollar, and the responsibility of making a difference either

on your corner or in your neighborhood and beyond. I learned from my family that leadership and service was expected and promoted. I’ll take these “downtown” values into the auditor general’s office and lead by example. My leadership skills, my academic training, college teaching experience, small business experience and practical, common-sense approach to problem solving more than qualify me for the job.

How will you ensure the School District of Philadelphia remains fiscally responsible, if elected? As auditor general, I will ensure that any tax dollars going into the school district is not only spent accurately, but more importantly, wisely. I’ll offer recommendations for improvement when necessary, and I’ll hound those empowered to be fiscally responsible. I’ll cut through the political red tape and get down to the basics so our kids in school get the best chance to succeed. Having taught myself in the school district (along with three of my sisters), I understand the necessity of balancing the books, and utilizing frugally a limited source of money to deliver the best education possible. Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Joe Gariffo is making his film dreams come true in his own backyard. By Jess Fuerst Review Contributor

oe Gariffo grew up at Seventh and Bigler streets. In June, he’ll shoot his third feature film in his childhood home. “They know. [My parents] already know what to expect, they’ve been through it before, they had 30 people sleeping in the basement,” Gariffo said of the past films he’s shot there. “They know exactly what they are getting into. Luckily, they are extremely supportive about it. They like what I’ve made.” Gariffo and business partner Shaun Paul Costello — with whom he has worked on almost all past projects — are the writers of the film “The Independents,” slated for a June shoot. “‘The Independents’ is the name of the hockey team. It’s a Philadelphia independent movie, and we’re a Philadelphia minor league team,” Gariffo, 25, said of the plot that follows a group of minor

He and Costello always act in their comedies, and are looking forward to taking this film to the next level. “We want to do things legitimately now and we are. We’ve really grown from when we made ‘Swooped.’ We were a ragtag group of kids that didn’t know what we were doing,” he said. “Swooped,” which is the first featurelength film the duo made in 2008, propelled Gariffo into a independent film community, and set the groundwork for getting their future projects off the ground. “We wrote it over the World Series in 2008, when the Phillies won. I believe it was between games two and three. We locked ourselves in my basement to get it done,” Gariffo, who currently lives near FDR Park on the 3700 block of Gateway Drive, said. “We had made [a second film,] ‘Booted.’ I edited a lot of that movie and learned a lot more than I knew on ‘Swooped.’ “I was able to learn all that stuff on a bigger film and we went back and trimmed

all the stuff no one laughed at [out of ‘Swooped’]. When we trimmed that people laughed throughout the entire thing.” Last year, Gariffo sent out the streamlined cut and “Swooped” was admitted to multiple festivals, the highlight of which was a win at the Action On International Film Festival in Los Angeles, where it took home the prize for best comedic feature. “Originally, it was going to be a short, but we decided to make it a feature. We just wanted to try it and see if we can do it,” Gariffo said. “It was kind of an accident how it all started. We didn’t plan to make anything as big as it turned out to be.” GARIFFO ATTENDED STELLA Maris, formerly 814 Bigler St., and took classes at Old City’s The Actor’s Center before going on to West Catholic High School. “I had done a few commercials, but nothing through school, one for AOL and some others,” he said. “Senior year, they were doing ‘Grease,’ and the main reason I auditioned was I was like the only Italian guy in the school. … I did audition and when they posted the cast list, I was Kenickie. It was the best version of ‘Grease’ I’ve ever seen, definitely interesting.” After West Catholic, Gariffo matriculated at Temple University’s film production program, where he met Costello.

“Actually I met Shaun, but I didn’t know this, at Senior Week 2004 at his beach house,” Gariffo said. “But we never knew that till we met years later. I met him on a film set. We started hanging out. He knew who I was and I knew who he was, but we hadn’t met. We just went everywhere, like Florida, and wrote about what we did. “We wrote the first part of ‘Swooped’ as a short. We wrote the first 11 minutes, or 11 pages, on the way back from Florida to Philadelphia, in the back of his cousin’s Honda Civic.” That film, which follows two men as they pursue their crushes and end up with each others’ girl, was shot in South Philadelphia and Orlando, Fla., and featured at least one local celebrity. “When we got to Geno’s, he let us film there, brought the entire crew in there,” Gariffo said of the late Joey Vento, who agreed to appear in the film and hand Gariffo a cheesesteak. While shooting in South Philadelphia is economical, Gariffo also likes to showcase his hometown and feels there is a mutual respect between him and the local business owners. “We’re shooting at Cookie’s at 10th and Oregon. We shot a scene there in ‘Booted,’” Gariffo said. “I just found out [April 12] that the Flyers, we have permission to

use the Flyers’ logo, as well as shoot in the Wells Fargo Center, [for ‘The Independents’]. And we can have some of the Flyers players there for a scene in the movie.” As things begin to pick up for the filmmaker, he has flirted with the idea of moving to New York or Los Angeles, but he received some sage advice to stick with what is working. “Alan Ruck, he was in ‘Booted.’ It was the first time we had worked with anybody at that level,” Gariffo said of the actor who played Cameron in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” “We were like, should we go to New York or L.A. and he said, ‘You guys should stay here, at least for now. You’re making enough noise here. Eventually someone will hear it.’ Otherwise we’d be just another needle in the haystack.” With a bigger budget, but the same work ethic, Gariffo and Costello are gearing up for “The Independents,” which includes weekly hockey workouts. And, for now, they will keep shooting on local soil. “We asked Alan if he wanted to do [another] movie, and because it was us, he said ‘yes,’” Gariffo said. “To me, someone on that level, who I greatly respect and then he respects us, that’s just the coolest. I feel like we’re doing something right.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

Ozzie and Fidel

O

zzie Guillen is the baseball manager of the Miami Marlins. He is an outspoken guy. Ozzie is anything but politically correct. When he managed in Chicago, he made candid comments about everything from getting drunk after games on the road to his wife’s lousy perfume. There are lots of characters in public life in Chicago and when you have won a World Series, your outrageous quotes are greeted with a shrug of the shoulders rather than shock. Ozzie was signed to manage in Miami, in no small part, because ownership is hoping to get the local Cuban community to buy tickets. The Marlins historically have drawn miniscule gatherings that could only be called “crowds” in the loosest sense. But this season, ownership hopes things will be different. The Marlins are now named for Miami instead of Florida and have a flashy, new stadium with a retractable dome to protect its fans from the summer weather that makes life in South Florida a delight only for gators and mosquitoes. The owners paid big bucks for new players in hopes Miami could soon contend for a championship. And then Guillen and his “love” for Fidel Castro intervened. Actually Ozzie didn’t say he loved the policies of Castro. What he said was he loved Castro’s resilience. Here’s the quote that got the older Miami Cuban community so upset: “I love Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that SOB is still there.” Ozzie called Castro an SOB, but who noticed? Unfortunately, no one, especially not the Cuban refugee community in South Florida. It is enough that he used the word “love” to describe any feelings he has about the Cuban dictator. In Chicago, folks know Ozzie has made many more outrageous statements in his life, but you’re not in Chicago anymore, Ozzie. The outrage that greeted Ozzie’s comments would have made one think he was the one that failed to provide air cover for the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion 50 years ago. The predictable American ritual followed. At first, Ozzie tried to blame his poor English for the distortion of his quotes about Castro. The Marlins ownership was aghast as they envisioned the local Cuban community turning from paying fans into protesters. Ozzie was forced into one of those painful public apologies, so common these days that they might soon

have a cable channel entirely devoted to the public apologies of public figures (call it Contrite TV). The Marlins suspended Ozzie for five games in hopes the furor would be quieted. A five-game suspension hasn’t satisfied the angry local Cuban community, who wants Ozzie fired because, if there is an axiom in this country, it is that all of us have a constitutional right not to be offended at any time. I am not here to defend Guillen’s comments about Castro, although admiring Castro’s ability to survive the poisonous cigars of the CIA is quite different than supporting the dictator’s political principles. Uncle Nunzi even once admitted to me he admired Mussolini’s ability to make the trains run on time. I am bothered by our easy acceptance of an employer’s right to stifle an employee’s right to voice his or her opinions. The Marlins’ organization knew what it was getting in Ozzie so it should not escape blame if there is blame to mete out. Ozzie’s statement is essentially innocuous as well as stupid. The Cuban refugee community outrage is over-the-top even by its standards. Here’s why. Because of the political importance of Florida in electing presidents, politicians have long catered to the whims of the Cuban refugee community. The embargo on Cuba continues even after it has proved a failure in getting rid of Castro (brother Raul is now in charge). We trade with Vietnam, China and Russia, but hold our nose when it comes to Cuba. Meanwhile it is the people in Cuba who are really the ones suffering from the embargo. The only thing standing in the way of diplomatic relations with Cuba is the fear of political reprisal in Florida. Then there’s the other hypocrisy. We supported the Batista regime in Cuba because it allowed American investment (if that’s what you call the mob-run casinos and brothels). The Batista dictatorship’s ruthlessness didn’t outrage us because we got a cut of the profits. There was a time when Fidel’s revolution was cheered in the United States until we found out he wasn’t a believer in democratic capitalism. Our attempts at killing Castro only served to drive him into the arms of the Soviets. President John F. Kennedy used the mob to try to get rid of Castro, and it does not take a farfetched imagination to wonder if this action played a role in him being assassinated in retaliation. If we could use the Guillen incident to rethink the hypocrisy of our own policies toward Cuba, maybe some good will come out of all of this nonsense. In the meantime, the Marlins better get on a long winning streak soon or they’ll throw Ozzie under the bus faster than a drunk’s wallet disappears in a South Beach bar. Scream about it

With its skillful melding of comedy and horror, “The Cabin in the Woods,” featuring Marty (Fran Kanz), from left, Curt (Chris Hemsworth) and Jules (Anna Hutchison) help to entertain audiences.

By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

F

rom the abrupt, bloody title card to the wisecracking character intros, “The Cabin in the Woods” begins with a spark suggesting a cheeky horror gem for a new generation — a “Scream” for the 4G-crowd, as it were. The dialogue is snappy, the humor is a spot-on carnage counterpoint, and the skewering of genre tropes makes for excellent snicker-whileyou-squirm diversion. It’s been a while since a self-reflexive slasher could truly grab viewers on both comedic and splatterific levels, and “Cabin” has been on a roll since wowing crowds at the South by Southwest Festival. Its greatest weakness is it may be too much of a good thing. When we meet virgin Dana (Kristen Connolly), sexpot Jules (Anna Hutchison), bookworm Holden (Jesse Williams), stoner Marty (Fran Kanz) and jock Curt (Chris Hemsworth), it’s clear the five archetypes aren’t super bright, headed for a lakeside getaway that has “death” scrawled all over it, right down to the ghastly gas-station attendant who warns against the trip. At the same time, two cynical surveillance gurus (Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford) are tracking the quintet’s every move in what proves to be a controlled arena serving some elaborate program — like “Jersey Shore” by way of “The Hunger Games.” To say much more would be to spoil the movie’s teased-at twists, which gather like a particle under pressure before exploding into a free-for-all of geek staples. Those who fawn over the work of writer/producer Joss Whedon (“Buffy,” “Firefly”) will especially appreciate his all-inclusive fright-flick upheaval, which sees him collaborate with “Cloverfield” helmer Drew

Goddard. The agile spirit of the duo’s film trumps its thin commentary as a transcendent element. The movie steps wrong in that once it opens its floodgates (which, again, won’t be described here), it never finds a way to close them, and as a result, a lot of that initial vitality is washed away. There’s plenty for which to commend the mad architects of “Cabin,” but one leaves the film wishing it were keener to please all of humankind, and not just the geeks who’ll inherit the earth.

The Cabin in the Woods R Three reels out of four Now playing in area theaters

Recommended Rental Pariah R Available Tuesday In this heartfelt subculture drama from breakout filmmaker Dee Rees, Adepero Oduye makes her arrival as formidable actress, portraying a 17-year-old, Brooklyn-based lesbian coming to terms with what it means to be a young, gay woman of color in today’s world. The movie often favors wobbly melodramatic beats over honest vibrancy, but Oduye’s work and the rarity of subject make it well worth the glimpse. The Toque Stops Here Restaurant Review:

eviewing a restaurant during Passover is no easy feat. It presents a number of dilemmas. For eight days, no bread passes my lips. I have to veer away from Italian fare should pasta and pizza tempt me. Although Sephardic Jews eat rice during Passover, I usually do not. That nixes any type of Asian fare. The solution: A steakhouse. I will feel most comfortable dining in a restaurant where beef takes pride of place on the bill of fare. Center City is bursting with this most traditional type of restaurant. I’ve said numerous times that The Prime Rib is my favorite steakhouse. Garth Weldon knows how to put together a menu and the atmosphere is reminiscent of a 1940s supper club. Reserve is the city’s newest steakhouse. Sandy and I happened upon it by accident strolling through Old City several weeks ago. I made a mental note to review the restaurant. After seeing “Jeff, Who Lives at Home,” at the Ritz East, we decided to dine at Reserve. The place is drop-dead gorgeous with looming ceilings, carved Corinthian columns over the bar that has been kitted out with several televisions. There’s lots of wood trim, along with deep burgundy leather banquettes and booths. A gentleman greeted us at the door and advised there was a wine tasting going on in the back of the main dining room. I took this as an invitation, but we were hungry and settled into a roomy, highly-polished wood table set with cloth napkins. Peking Inn: 20th St. and Penrose Ave., 215-271-1389, $$

The menu featured no surprises. It was standard steakhouse fare with soups, salads, beef, a chicken dish, a few fish dishes and sides. Our stoic-faced waiter began with the bottled water spiel but Schuylkill punch is always our water of choice. We had a few questions about the specials. It listed prices from $10 to $15, which was strange because I do not think a steakhouse serves a $10 steak. Sandy and I discussed the menu and after a few minutes he returned with “are you girls ready to order?” This was extremely off-putting but at least he didn’t say “you guys.” Dinner began with crispy polenta ($9), which consisted of a few batons of baked bland cornmeal batons topped with a few sautéed mushrooms, shards of Parmesan and a dressed lettuce leaf or two. The whole appetizer lacked flavor. The kitchen was most thoughtful because Sandy and I wanted to share the wedge salad ($9) as this appetizer is always big enough for two. It was split in the kitchen. The salad consisted of one-half of a head of cool, crisp iceberg lettuce, drizzled with blue cheese dressing, topped with four pieces of walnut and surrounded by cherry tomato halves. The star of the wedge salad must be the dressing. It must be thick, rich and studded with small chunks of cheese. This was thin and lacked any bites of blue cheese. The walnuts added nothing. This salad cried out for slightly salty pieces of crisp bacon. A good, dry-aged rib-eye ($36) is my

steak of choice. Sandy and I ordered it medium-rare. The 12-ounce steak was coated in salt and pepper and grilled as ordered. It was split in the kitchen and served on very hot plates, which was a big plus with me. Hot food should be served on hot plates. The beef was tender, but I found the coating a bit too salty. We had been eating potatoes almost every night during Passover. No potatoes au gratin tonight. We selected creamed spinach ($5) and cauliflower au gratin ($6). The spinach was obviously fresh because although it was finely chopped, it retained a bit of toothiness, which I like. I found it had a funny sour-tinny flavor. The cauliflower on the other hand was

I

so love a good, gooey grilled cheese sandwich. It remains a strong comfort food of my childhood and teenage years. At home, we made grilled American cheese on rye. Friday lunch specials at Lower Merion High School were grilled American cheese on white bread with a bowl of homemade Tomato Soup. According to the editors at Woman’s Day, April is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month. I did some culinary sleuthing and discovered America fell in love with grilled cheese during the Great Depression because sliced white bread and American cheese were inexpensive and readily available. The French could have invented it with their yummy Croque Monsieur made with cheese and ham, and croque madame, made with cheese and leftover cooked chicken or turkey. Their Italian neighbors created a grilled sandwich called the panino prepared on its own unique press. Little is required to make the perfect grilled cheese. You need a cheese that melts easily. My favorites are cheddar, Swiss, Gruyère, brie, Taleggio, fontina from Italy and good old American cheese sliced to order at the deli. Bread choices run the gamut from farmhouse white, whole wheat, challah, Jewish rye, seven-grain, rustic Tuscan and sourdough. I like Metropolitan Bakery’s sandwich white and challah. Ask the clerk to slice the bread on the machine. A crusty

authentic Jewish rye from a deli floods me with memories of childhood. You can use either a heavy nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan. Unsalted butter is a necessity. You can smear some mustard on the bread. I heat the skillet over medium. Once the sandwich has settled in nicely, I cover the pan and keep a watchful eye on it because the butter and bread could burn easily. Use a spatula to press down and flip it over. Some people add thinly sliced tomato, but I don’t care for this combination. The tomato gets too watery and runny. Bacon is my favorite additive for grilled cheese. I also love any kind of ham especially prosciutto di Parma. If you have some corned beef or pastrami in the fridge, get set to make a Reuben. The original Reuben also calls for sauerkraut. Use your imagination when making grilled cheese. You can add spinach leaves or baby spicy arugula. As Cole Porter wrote: “Anything Goes.”

Croque Monsieur Ingredients:

Two slices of bread of choice Mustard, optional 4 thin slices of Gruyère 4 thin slices of boiled ham Unsalted butter

Directions: Build your sandwich using alternating slices of cheese and ham. Heat 2 tablespoons of the butter over medium in the pan. Add the sandwich and let it

sit for about two minutes. Cover the skillet with a lid. Allow to cook, checking to make sure butter is not burning. Press down with a spatula. Flip the sandwich over. You may need to add a bit more butter. Cover the pan with a lid. Allow to cook for about another minute. Check the sandwich to see if the cheese has melted. Serves one.

Tomato Soup Ingredients:

2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter 1 large onion, cut into small dice Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 28-ounce cans of whole San Marzano tomatoes 1 32-ounce package of chicken or vegetable stock 1 cup of water Fresh herb of choice, chopped Dollop of sour cream, optional

Directions: Melt the oil and butter in a 4-quart pot over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for about eight minutes. Add the remaining ingredients, ex-

cept the sour cream, and cook over medium heat. Blend well. Puree the soup in batches in a blender or food processor. Reheat when ready to serve. Serves four to six. Note from Phyllis: Since tomatoes are not in season until July, this recipe works well using top-quality whole San Marzano tomatoes. I will give you a recipe for fresh tomato soup sometime this summer when tomatoes are big, rip, juicy and plentiful. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/food-anddrink/features.

Marie & leo NEVER FORGOTTEN

You will always be loved and missed. My Daddy, My Pal, My Heart. Now you and Mario are with Jesus, and one day I’ll see you and my brother again. I think of you and Mario often always with love. I look back Daddy at the memories that remind me how much we’ve always meant to each other. I’m so very proud and thankful to our Lord for us. It was a Blessed honor knowing that our hearts felt the same love for life and happiness and it was an honor for father and son best pals to have that love throughout our lives. Dad I knew that smile you left with and you knew all the truth. Love you and Mario with all my heart. Known truth is forever and so is love until we meet again with Jesus.

Soccer-hungry Americans made her acquaintance with her Nov. 13 appointment as head coach that same year. Already an accomplished bunch before her arrival, with World Cup wins in 1991 and ’99, her gang has further positioned itself as a juggernaut, blasting this season’s opponents by a combined 55-4 mark in attaining a 10-1-1 record. Having broken so many foes’ hearts while enriching supporters’ lumps, she found herself thrilled to learn of the museum’s decision. “It’s so cool,” Sundhage said. “The feedback has been wonderful, and I feel fortunate to have another opportunity to promote the game.” THROUGH HER CHARGE employment, Sundhage visited the museum in 2002, two

1996 Olympics, but by that time, she had already plotted her future in her beloved sport, amassing six years as a coach, including two seasons as a player-coach. “I like to live in the present, but I sometimes look back and feel even more grateful for my journey,” Sundhage said. Pennsylvania figures prominently in her career, as she spent 2001 and ’02 as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Charge, a member of the defunct Women’s United Soccer Association. Following the stint with the Villanova-based outfit, she became the head coach of the league’s Boston Breakers the next year before returning to Sweden for three seasons. Global audiences began to observe her passion in ’07 when the China People’s Republic Women’s National Team tabbed her as an

hough only 99 days remain until the Summer Olympic Games begin in London, U.S. Women’s National Team coach Pia Sundhage admitted she is not obsessing over devising plans for her soccer stars to defend their gold medal. “To keep perspective, I look at yesterday, today and maybe tomorrow,” the 52-yearold leader said Sunday from Sweden of respecting life’s idiomatic flow. Perhaps she will allow herself to think two days ahead, as the American Swedish Historical Museum, 1900 Pattison Ave., will present her with its 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award 6 p.m. Saturday. The ceremony will continue the 86-year-old site’s mission to honor Swedes and Swedish-Americans whose achievements have brought their culture attention and esteem and will complement the annual Spring Ting fundraiser that supports educational programs and exhibitions. “With her success as a player and a coach and the fact she is a charming and engaging person, we thought Pia would be a perfect choice,” membership and marketing coordinator Caroline Rossy said of lauding the Scandinavian, whose nearly five-year tenure has yielded commendable results. In addition to its Olympic triumph over Brazil, her squad, which holds FIFA’s top ranking, has captured the prestigious Algarve Cup three times, the Four Nations Tournament twice and the Peace Queen Cup once. It nearly scored last year’s World Cup title, too, losing the final to Japan in a penalty shootout. “Shoot, it’s been absolutely crazy,” Sundhage said of her soccer sojourn, with her contributions to America’s legacy holding extra significance. “I am living my dream.” Her vision began in 1975, when she debuted for Sweden’s national unit. The next two decades included 146 international contests in which she scored 71 goals; five Swedish Club championships; four Swedish Club Cup victories; the ’84 European Women’s Championship, in which she netted the title game’s winning tally; and the ’91 World Cup bronze medal. Her Nordic land placed her image on a postage stamp in ’85, and she earned a sixth-place finish in FIFA’s Women’s Player of the Century voting in 2000. She retired following the

years before the Packer Park location instituted the Spring Ting. She will become the 11th winner, situating herself alongside such names as former Flyers captain Peter Forsberg. As a pre-festivity component, the site is holding an online auction, which ends at 10 tonight. At the formal event, whose ticket prices range from $85 to $550, a silent auction will occur, with proceeds benefiting the country’s oldest Swedish museum in its attempts to explore Scandinavian pride. Along with the museum, South Philadelphia contains Pennsylvania’s oldest Christian worship site, Gloria Dei (Old Swedes’) Church, 916 S. Swanson St., which dates back to 1677. Though the landmarks promote Sweden’s history, one may wonder what future their treated population will have in Philadelphia. According to zipatlas.com, the city contains 3,597 Swedes or Swedish-Americans, 0.24 percent of its population. “Our celebration helps people to know that Swedes and Swedish-Americans are always at the forefront of creativity and achievement,” Rossy said. Sundhage will be leaving Bradenton, Fla., site of a 12-day Olympic preparatory camp, to make her return to the area. Her past will again mingle with her future May 27, when her athletes face China at Chester’s PPL Park. They will finalize their pursuit of another gold June 30, with a match against Canada at Utah’s Rio Tinto Stadium. “We are fit and healthy,” she said of her players, with forwards Amy Wambach and Alex Morgan, who have combined for 21 goals this year, likely to lead the London call. “The team looks good and will be among a field of amazing contenders.” In line with her refusal to rush matters, Sundhage said she had not pondered what she would say in her acceptance speech. With a reputation for singing, she hinted some notes might leak out. “You never know,” she said with a laugh. “It all depends on the situation, but there might be some tunes.” SPR

Thank You Blessed Mother for Prayer being answered

Gloria

5 DAy NOVENA TO ST. ThErESA St. Theresa, The Little Flower. Please pick me a rose form the heavenly garden, and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to grant me the favor I implore and tell him I will love him daily more and more. This prayer is to be followed by 5 Hail Mary’s, 5 Our Father’s and 5 Gloria’s. The prayer is to be said by 11 AM daily for 5 days. On the 5th day you will receive a single rose or more in some form, but only if your favor is to be granted. Take note of what you have promised, if God grants the favor you implore. J.Q.

THANK YOU GOD

Say nine Hail Mary’s for nine days and ask for three wishes. First business, second and third is for the impossible. Have this published on the ninth day and your wishes will come true, even though you may not believe in it. S.T.J. NOVENA TO ST. CLArE Ask St. Clare for 3 favors. “One Business, Two Impossible.” Say 9 Hail Marys for 9 days with Lighted Candles. Pray, whether you believe it or not. Publish on the 9th day. “May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be Praised, Adored and Everyday.” Request will be granted no matter how impossible it seems. Publication must be promised. J.Q. NOVENA TO ST. JUDE

Oh Holy St. Jude, apostle and Martyr, great in virtue & rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depths of my heart & humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present & urgent petition. In return I promise to make your name known & cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Mary’s & Gloria’s. St. Jude, pray for us & all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. I have had my request granted. J.Q.

Thank You God For Answering My Prayers J.D.H.
