What are your thoughts on the mayor’s proposal to increase liquor and cigarette taxes to fund the school district? “It’s not a good idea because people won’t be able to afford cigarettes. I will be inclined to cut back or even quit smoking. Francesca Oliverio, Broad and Jackson streets “Some people need alcohol but not necessarily cigarettes. Crime will unfortunately increase to get more money to buy alcohol. Chris Forshee, Eighth Street and Oregon Avenue “It’s a good way to make money for an ailing school district.

Educating others

To the Editor: At the Girard Academic Music Program, all of the members of the senior class participate in a youth services project. My group consisting of Titus Knox, Julia Bokunewicz, Zipporah Ridley and myself decided to focus on autism awareness. We felt that this was an appropriate topic because autism is a condition that effects the lives of many of our peers and it is something society needs to become more aware of. We started by contacting the autism research departments at several universities throughout the Philadelphia area. The first contact to respond was a woman named Ryan Hammond who is the head of the Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support at St. Joseph’s University. We were then invited there on one of our days off from school to take a tour and find out everything that the facility offers.

We learned that the Kinney Center provides many programs for people on the autism spectrum, as well as their families. Some of these programs include summer camps, after-school activities, athletic clubs and even life skill classes. We were very impressed and decided that our goal would be to raise money for the Kinney Center to help fund these wonderful programs. We set up a booth in our school cafeteria where we distributed literature regarding the purposes of the Kinney Center and some general information on autism. We also provided items such as apples, hand sanitizers, wristbands, lotions, notepads, books, ribbons and T-shirts to people who gave donations to the Kinney Center. This fundraiser lasted for several weeks and we raised a total of $478.22. This money was distributed to provide assistance to families that may have financial difficulties in paying for their children

Our project concluded with Ryan Hammond coming to GAMP for an assembly and happily informing the student body about ways that they can help children on the autism spectrum by participating in the Kinney Center’s volunteer programs. Supporting the federal tobacco tax To the Editor: One of the best ways to prevent kids from ever starting to smoke is to increase the price of tobacco products so they can’t afford to purchase them. Right now, there is a bill pending in the U.S. Senate that would increase the federal tax on cigarettes by 94 cents. This one simple act can keep 1.7 million kids from ever becoming adult smokers. And more importantly, it means that more than 600,000

youth won’t die prematurely from a smoking-related death. I’m calling on U.S. Sen. Bob Casey to cosponsor Senate Bill 826 to increase the federal tobacco tax. The impact of this bill would be extraordinary for children, for adult smokers trying to quit smoking and for the fiscal health of our country. It’s time to save lives and protect kids. Senator, it’s time to cosponsor Senate Bill 826 to increase the federal tobacco tax. wo men threw a man off of his bike and robbed him after a brutal assault early Monday. When he went to the hospital 12 hours after his attack, doctors discovered the severity of his injuries. On his way home from work at 1 a.m., the 21-year-old cyclist pedaled down the 1100 block of South Ninth Street where two men disrupted his ride, shoving him to the ground and punching and kicking him in the head. One said, “Give me the money,” and the duo took about $300, his backpack containing clothing and his light blue 22-inch racing bicycle. The offenders fled in an unknown direction while the victim walked home and went to sleep. At about 1 p.m. a family member escorted the teen to Methodist Hospital, which transported him to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Trauma Unit for a possible brain injury. At press time, detectives were unable to interview the victim, who suffered severe head trauma, including a left orbital fracture and hematoma in the temporal lobe, due to his condition. A detailed description of the offenders was not available at press time. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Parked and punched Following an argument over double parking, a North Philly man allegedly beat a man with brass knuckles. The riff is believed to have begun at 2:35 a.m. May 22 on the 2700 block of South Darien Street between two 19-year-old men and Khanh Nguyen, 22, of North Philly, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When it got heated, Nguyen allegedly entered a residence on the 2700 block of South Ninth Street and returned with a pair brass knuckles, which he wore as he punched one of the 19-yearolds numerous times, causing lacerations to the teen’s nose, back and knees. Nguyen was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime and prohibited offensive weapon, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records. He posted a percentage of his $10,000 bail May 22.

Pick-pocketing perp A man was attacked and robbed in a Whitman parking lot last week.

The 44-year-old man parked in the lot at Pathmark, 330 Oregon Ave., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When he went to his trunk, a man placed an object to his back and said, “Give me the … money.” The thief pushed his target down and held the trunk to his back as he took $160 from his pants pocket. The offender, who was described as white or Latino, having a small build, and wearing blue cutoff shorts, long-sleeved red shirt and a red baseball cap, fled through the parking lot and west on Oregon. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Batter’s up An unknown man struck someone with an aluminum baseball bat for an unknown reason in Grays Ferry Sunday. A 24-year-old was at 28th and Reed streets at 12:30 p.m. when the bat-wielding man stuck him with in his lower back with the object, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The victim fell down and wasn’t able to get back on his feet right away. By the time he did, his attacker was headed south on 28th. The motive was unknown. A medic transported the victim, who complained of back pain, to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Tolliver said. The offender was described as black, 5-foot-11, having a medium build and wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Boutique burglary A Marconi store was ransacked overnight Saturday. An employee from Duo Shoes & Clothing, 2551 S. 17th St., notified police at 11:05 a.m. Sunday when the employer arrived to work and noticed the front store window shattered, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. There was $400, $500 worth of purses and $400 worth of jewelry missing from the business, which was closed but secured between 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms. SPR Contact Managing Editor Amanda L. Mummers getaway The competitive spirits are being pushed aside as the Fancy Brigade clubs head back to North Wildwood for their 19th annual June gathering. ■ By Bill Gelman Review Editor

M

ummers tend to make a lasting impression. The downside is fans have to wait an entire year for the next New Year’s Day Parade to come around. Former North Wildwood mayor Aldo Palumbo attended the 1994 parade and enjoyed it so much that he approached the Philadelphia Mummers Fancy Brigade Association about coming to the Jersey Shore for an annual weekend affair. Now the groups are packing their bags and costumes for the 19th annual gathering taking place June 7 and 8, but unlike Jan. 1, this isn’t about earning firstplace praises from the judges. “This is actually a time to go down to North Wildwood as a division and have some fun together. The fact that it has been going on for 19 The third in a years now says how monthly series much the brigades focusing on the are into this special behind-the-scenes weekend,” Jim Jupreparations of lia, president of the the Philadelphia Philadelphia MumMummers mers Fancy Brigade Fancy Brigade Association, said. Association. “So while we are competitors on New Year’s Day, we can still enjoy each other’s company during the year. And the North Wildwood Weekend is the top social event of the year for the Brigades.” Of the 10 groups that marched earlier this year, nine will be making the two-day excursion. The South Philly Vikings, 1815 S. 11th St.; Downtowners, 148-50 Snyder Ave.; Saturnalians, 1811-13 S. Second St.; Avenuers, 1226 S. Second St.; Jokers, 1602 S. Second St.; Satin Slipper, 1444 S. Second St.; Golden Crown, 2022 S. Third St.; Clevemore, 2119 S. 10th St.; and 2nd Street Shooters, 1438 S. Front St., make up the list of participants. The festivities begin 7 p.m. June 7 with the seventh annual Friday Night Pub Crawl that currently includes stops at Casey’s on Third, Coconut Cove, Anglesea Pub,

Number 1 Tavern, Keenan’s, Echo’s and Westy’s. More than 200 Mummers will be going from bar to bar, Julia said. Some “friendly competition” amongst the clubs is expected. Saturday starts off with the annual block party — complete with music, dance and strut contests — along Olde New Jersey Avenue from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. The 19th annual Fancy Brigade summer parade follows, starting at Second Street and Olde New Jersey Avenue. “Since the prize pressure of New Year’s Day is not there you will see a different type of parade,” Julia said. “As a spectator, don’t be surprised if you become part of the presentation. If you come once, you will come back.” FOR NORTH WILDWOOD’S Joe Quattrone, the annual second-weekend-of-June gathering is one of his favorites. The 72-yearold knows a little something about the Mummers from his days growing up at 11th Street and Oregon Avenue, and being a member of the Fralinger String Band, 1901-03 S. Third St., for 50-plus years. He

currently serves as North Wildwood’s entertainment coordinator. “One of my favorite pet projects is the two times a year the Mummers come in,” Quattrone, who also is organizing the Sept. 7 Mummers String Band Show, said. “This is the summer home of the Mummers. So many people from the Mummers are down here.” He said between 20,000 and 25,000 people are expected for the five-block parade in which each of the participating groups will be performing multiple times in full costume. It’s expected to last about two hours. The late-afternoon start allows families to get in some valuable beach and ocean time prior to the festivities. Like the spectators, the Mummers and their families enjoy taking in all of the Wildwood offerings including the board-

walk, sunset on the bay, the great restaurants and bars and some impromptu Wiffle ball games. For those making the trip down, there may be some noise in the hotel parking lots as the brigades will be holding Saturday morning rehearsals. For the first 12 years of this event, the groups actually competed for prize money, but Julia said it got to a point where groups were turning down the opportunity to go to Wildwood as they were front-loading the prize money, so they removed that aspect. “It has gotten better since we did away with the competition since all Brigades now participate,” Julia said. Quattrone said he has received calls from people in Altoona and Cincinnati, Ohio who are making the trip east. “It’s an event that the whole family enjoys,” he said. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone.” SPR For more information, visit NorthWildwood.com.

Throwback Quiz

AUTISM EXPRESSED continued from page 1 31-year-old said Friday from her Lower Moyamensing classroom. “I’m excited to scale my content to reach thousands of families across the country.” In claiming the $10,000 endowment from the fourth annual University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and Milken Family Foundation’s Education Business Plan Competition, the resident of the 1300 block of Tasker Street emerged as one of seven winners from a 250-entrant pool. Representing 17 countries, the hopefuls competed for $145,000, with the Passyunk Square dweller eager to tout her belief that society must strengthen autistic adolescents’ life skills instruction. “I use digital media to circumvent the learning variations of those with autism,” McKeone, who earned her special education master’s degree from Chestnut Hill College, said as her eight pupils interacted and visited her brainchild’s website. “I’m all about preparing them for different opportunities and consider this instruction a new way to hit more rigorous goals and objectives.” The ebullient educator readied her reaction to a dearth of resources through the University of the Arts, whose Corzo Center Creative Incubator/Wells Fargo Fellowship granted the alumnus $10,000 in 2011. She launched the public platform last year, with the homepage billing her quest as teaching “marketable, digital skills to promote independence for special education students in a technology-driven society and economy.” To acquaint her charges, freshmen through seniors, with those concepts, McKeone starts by discussing Internet basics, such as browsing, managing e-mail accounts and understanding Web safety by differentiating between proper and improper conduct and content. Lessons, 150 in total, build on their predecessors and feature activities for practice purposes. After each gain, McKeone bestows achievement badges, with members also able to accumulate imaginary incomes to heighten their knowledge of financial obligations. “Under the law, I am to provide the least restrictive setup,” she said as DeShaun Cole marched to the head of the class to deliver a presentation on their school’s garden. “My mission is to raise the bar for them so that they can overcome stigmas and notions of what they can be and what they can achieve.” ACCORDING TO A ’12 University of Pennsylvania Wharton School survey that appears on Autism Expressed, 47 percent of parents of autistic children find themselves “Not at all satisfied” with educational offerings for their offspring, with another 26 percent of responders “Mostly unsatisfied.” In presenting her curriculum before

the judges three weeks ago, McKeone reiterated that early intervention cannot continue to be the lone recipient of engrossing support. As her edifying duties have her calling on applied behavior analysis and Benjamin Bloom’s Taxonomy of Cognition that addresses affective, cognitive and psychomotor matters, she has observed greater earning and learning potential, increased motivation and resiliency among her ambitious youths. “They’re giving their all every day,” McKeone said of the teenagers, most of whom spend the entire day with one another. “Most need multiple ways to express themselves, so I am targeting how best to do that because I know that is true of so many autistic figures.” Cole numbers himself among those whose aspirations for a fruitful existence have received enduring encouragement. The 17-yearold junior has worked with McKeone for three years and has come to love the rapport he shares with his moderator and peers. “I think we are excelling really fine,” the resident of the 1700 block of Reed Street, who earned kudos for his explanation of Southern’s green space, said. “Personally, I like working on projects and getting ready for my future.” The Point Breeze inhabitant is greatly anticipating landing a job, likely in customer service, and has crafted a résumé and worked on his interviewing abilities. Friday’s presentation gave him more understanding of the scrutiny that will await him as he tries to maximize his dreams. “So many people are quick to judge autistic individuals,” McKeone said, adding that her attendees came to her with individual-

ized education programs and that the school can continue to offer life skills tutelage to them until they turn 21. “If they were to analyze more, they’d learn how bright and excited to advance that they are.” The New Jersey native applied for her eventual honor in February to tally more believers in her philosophy and learned of her semifinal status last month. Venturing to the Ivy League campus for the competition’s conclusion, she knew she had come a long way from her early education days when she possessed no autistic support knowledge. “I know how hard it can be to have a start-up company,” McKeone, also Autism Expressed’s CEO, said of sharing with her students the realization that persistence is a must. “I’m ready to advance the lives of as many people as I can.” Along with the award money, she received an invitation to the Education Design Studio Fund, an initiative through the University of Pennsylvania that will likely commence this summer. Diligently working to place her content, which is responsible for a big chunk of her instruction, within organizations and schools, she values opportunities to promote literacy and, more importantly, openness. “I run a structured, disciplined classroom,” McKeone said. “We try to understand what the world has to offer, but the focus is on what we have to offer back.” SPR For more information, visit autismexpressed.com. s her résumé includes prominent awards and positions in such cultural havens as Barcelona, New York City and Rome, Elizabeth Grimaldi has become quite acquainted with distinction yet has never developed an elitist attitude regarding creative aptitude. The 32-year-old has promoted her all-inclusive approach along each journey and has hoped to inspire a similar stance since her April 1 appointment as the executive director of the Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St. “I have so many aspirations, with all of them relating to my belief that creative outlets should be accessible to everyone,” the resident of the 700 block of South American Street said last week from her Bella Vista-based workplace. “I’m so keen on having community members realize how their artistic needs can find fulfillment here.” The seven-year Queen Village dweller learned last winter of the opening at the 115-year-old site, the nation’s first community-based art center, and expressed her aesthetic bent over five interviews, including a 10-hour evaluation. LIFESTYLES choice in February, she greatly anticipated helming the location she had long known about through her same post at North Philly-situated The Village of Arts and Humanities. “Fleisher has a reputable history working with neighborhoods and individuals to engage them in strengthening their communities, especially for children, so I’ve come to continue that great outreach,” Grimaldi said. “I’m observing and learning every day, too, just like our students.” Her employer, the winner of a 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, annually provides thousands of such figures with free and low-cost studio art instruction, grants beginning and established creators exhibition space and offers School District of Philadelphia pupils arts-integrated residencies. Through focus groups, interviews and surveys, it determined two years ago how to improve access and inspire participation, selecting “Come to us,” “Show us” and “Welcome us” as its top themes. “We’re marketing those three right now, and I’m excited to see how adults and children come to realize that art, which can appear intimidating, is actually capable of relaxing and invigorating someone,” Grimaldi said, spotlighting ColorWheels,

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

Fleisher’s mobile art studio, and the FAMbassadors initiative that aligns employees and volunteers with area inhabitants, as prosperous means. Two months into her tenure, the leader enjoys every chance to opine that exposure to art crafts a lifetime of potential. So far she has seen enough creative curiosity, including that of learners at George Washington School, 1198 S. Fifth St., whom she recently observed benefiting from lessons, to know encouraging exploration will yield content attendees. With diverse tastes and populations to address, she welcomes the task of motivating acquaintances and strangers to think of themselves as upholders and advancers of a powerful calling. “There are so many perceptions of what art is,” Grimaldi said. “One thing we must remember is that it’s never stagnant. It’s always encouraging us to look, react and evolve.” THE PASSIONATE HIRE matured among few who shared her beliefs. A native of Hong Kong, she attended its Island School, where most of her classmates elected to become bankers. With art perceived as an enriching practice that stood little chance of providing someone with a career, Grimaldi had not intended to become an artist yet could

not shake her interest, especially in painting. Having visited the United States periodically, she settled here permanently in 1999 to attend Bryn Mawr College, with the Lower Merion Township institution intensifying her fine arts attraction. “I eventually made my way to South Philly because I was looking for a spot conducive to establishing relationships with people who appreciate the city’s overall sense of loyalty in the cultural and arts scenes,” Grimaldi, who also noted her fondness for citizens’ conscientious appreciation of Philadelphia as a holistic environment for artists, said. Three years after her move, she came to head The Village, enjoying a four-year run that included the development of a master campus plan for its 12 art parks and 14 buildings; the launch of Cred, a magazine with art and writing from contributors ages 25 and younger; the creation of the PhillyEarth environmental education center; and the receipt of an Impact100 Philadelphia honor and two Knight Arts Challenge awards. “Through The Village, I was able to gain a great sense of how to mobilize resources,” Grimaldi, who also has guestlectured at Drexel and Temple universities and assisted the Free Library of

Philadelphia Community Advisory Committee, the last role linking her with the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia’s South Center, 2416-18 S. Seventh St., said. “Since I’ve transitioned, I’ve been able to build on relationships with all sorts of colleagues, all of whom are of the mindset that we can do even more. Of all the places I’ve been, Philadelphia has the most room to experiment because of the number of grants and other opportunities.” Declaring that she “couldn’t be happier” with her employment situation, Grimaldi also is enjoying domestic bliss with Michael, her husband of six years, and Hayden, their 3-year-old daughter. She does, however, fear what might happen to her offspring’s generation if the district follows through with its plan to make arts programs a budgetary casualty. “Art is supposed to be a constant, and we shouldn’t have to ponder being without it,” Grimaldi said. “Through Fleisher, I’m going to do my best to be among this area’s greatest advocates for its possibilities.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Using Gosnell to ban abortion

W

hat Dr. Kermit Gosnell practiced was indefensible. His actions were horrific, disgusting, brutal, illegal and criminal. The guilty verdict was just. But what the Gosnell case did not prove is that we should ban abortion. The anti-abortion movement is trying to use Gosnell’s atrocities to outlaw all abortions. It seeks to show that Gosnell’s butchery is the common practice at all legal abortion clinics. The movement’s leadership knows that is not true and that Gosnell violated federal regulations governing clinics. That is why he was convicted. The State is supposed to inspect these clinics. Gosnell’s clinic was not inspected in more than 15 years, during which it evolved into a filthy “house of horrors,” violating not only the law, but standards of medical and human decency. Gosnell turned to second-trimester abortions to make his money because some women were without insurance and living on the fringes of society. His staff was untrained, the equipment was not sterile, and he took cash only. Statistics show most women avoid second-term abortions. About 1.5 percent of U.S. abortions during a given year occur after 21 weeks, according to The Huffington Post. So why would any woman turn to Gosnell’s clinic? Many of his clients were reportedly poor, uninsured, uninformed and desperate. States with restrictions, such as waiting periods, often force women to go to a rogue clinic. Gosnell made his blood money off such women. Other women in similar circumstances had the choice to go to safe and sanitary clinics. A Bhutanese refugee who died at Gosnell’s clinic, tried unsuccessfully to get an abortion near her Virginia home when she was 15 weeks pregnant, only to be turned down three different times, according to The Huffington Post. She wound up going to Gosnell, and it cost her life. It seems to me it is counter-intuitive to conclude the way to prevent the Gosnells of the world from subjecting women to their butchery is to completely ban abortion. What happened at the Gosnell clinic was not only a horrible crime, but a failure of the State to ensure its own prescribed standards were met. We know what happened before Roe v. Wade when abortions

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

were banned in this country. The Gosnell clinic and back-alley abortions were the rule, not the exception. Wealthy women able to travel to places where abortions were legal were the only ones who could obtain safe abortions. The rest were left to the underbelly of society, to the back-alley butchers, or, out of sheer desperation, to resort to coat hangers. This is not some pro-choice propaganda, it is our history. Before the Gosnell case hit national headlines, several states had hoped to place restrictions on clinics to make safe, legal abortions almost impossible. Arkansas tried to ban abortions after 12 weeks until a court blocked the law’s implementation. North Dakota will put a measure on the ballot in 2014 that, if passed, would define life as beginning at conception (for all practical purposes that would outlaw abortions). Access to clinics performing abortions is severely limited in many southern states. Some states have simply implemented many roadblocks to make abortions difficult. In some cases, the requirements border on the bizarre. North Carolina has banned pregnancy terminating pills and subjected doctors to increasing lawsuits and heavy fines. These laws, known as Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers, impose requirements not deemed medically necessary and are often imposed in the guise of women’s safety issues. Abortion, no doubt, will remain a divisive issue in this country for a long time. Polls indicate the country is almost evenly split on the issue. Even as the country has become more liberal on other social issues, it has become more anti-abortion. Most of the pro-choice folks I know, like myself, are not “pro-abortion.” We believe, as former President Bill Clinton once said, “Abortion should not only be safe and legal, it should be rare.” Religious belief is at the core of the anti-abortion movement. There is also an inconsistency there that often goes unchallenged — the idea that contraception is also wrong. If we are truly to make abortions rare not only in this country but across the globe, then we should be encouraging contraception. Pro-life protesters often hold up posters with pictures of bloody fetuses, but outlawing abortion wouldn’t change those horrific pictures. In fact, those instances would become more frequent if we leave women in the hands of a Gosnell. Ensure abortion is safe, legal and rare in this country, and be willing to pay for public service health workers to ensure clinics meet medical and safety standards. That’s the best way also to ensure there are no more Gosnell clinics in America. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Mub (voiced by Aziz Ansari), from left, and Mary Katherine (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) embark on a journey to battle evil in “Epic.”

Lacking ‘Epic’ elements ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

I

t’s telling that “Epic,” the new animated adventure from Blue Sky Studios, has such a generic title. The film is a shameless grab bag of blatantly borrowed storylines, showing elements of “The Borrowers,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Fern Gully,” “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” and “The Lord of the Rings.” Its name also is ill-fitting, as this tale is hardly one of sweeping, enveloping grandeur. It tells of teenage Mary Katherine, or “M.K.” (voiced by Amanda Seyfried), who reunites with her estranged scientist father (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), before being magically shrunken to the size of the forest folk her dad has been hunting for years. The only truly epic element of the film is the startling beauty of its animation, which marks a definite artistic peak for the folks behind Pixar also-rans like “Ice Age” and “Robots” (Chris Wedge, who directed both of those films, also is at the helm here). Inevitably, the immersive brilliance of the verdant setting calls to mind comparable spectacles like “Avatar,” but “Epic” carves out its own woodsy aesthetic with truly gorgeous touches, like plants that unfurl with colorful glory, and armies of birds and bats that swarm with jaw-dropping awe. It’s a pity the script, penned by five people, can’t offer similar rewards. Beyond that general lack of originality, all the characters, including a forest-army general (voiced by Colin Farrell), a jungle queen (voiced by Beyoncé), a cadaverous villain (voiced by Christoph Waltz) and a rebellious mate for M.K. (voiced by Josh Hutcherson), spout nothing but ex-

position, feeding you the plot on a platter that’s condescending, no matter the target age group. There are some valuable eco-themes to be found here, as the pint-sized battle that rages is essentially one between human neglect and environmental stewardship, but they lack the weight of, say, those found in last year’s “The Lorax.” And though it’s nice to see female characters like M.K. running the show for a change, it doesn’t change the feeling that “Epic,” while visually marvelous, is as simple-minded and derivative as they come.

Epic PG Two-and-a-half reels out of four Now playing at area theaters

Recommended Rental Identity Thief R Available Tuesday

“Identity Thief” may not be the year’s best comedy, but it’s likely to boast one of the year’s best comedic performances, as Melissa McCarthy, who plays the titular con artist, ably proves her breakout turn in “Bridesmaids” was no fluke. Starring opposite Jason Bateman, whose identity her character nabs amid the crime spree that is her life, McCarthy is revelatory, pairing her LOL moments with unexpected depth. Her character steals identities; she steals the show. SPR Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-entertainment/movies.

ore than eight years ago, Café Du Laos, the city’s first Laotian restaurant, opened on South 11th Street. I had never tasted this Asian cuisine, but found it similar to Vietnamese in its delicacy and Thai, which always brings bold flavors. Several months ago, the restaurant, rechristened as Ratchada, expanded its Thai dishes, although I found a bit of Laotian influence on the menu. The dining room is filled with earthy carved mahogany, colorful Thai-Laotian artwork with a strong nod to the noble elephant. I slid onto a comfortable banquette and enjoyed the simple beauty of the table. White cloths and napkins were set off by black and gold table runners woven with elephants. A petite, young woman walked about the room with the grace of a ballet dancer. She told us she was the owner, and answered all of our questions with a smile. Thai flavors always excite my taste buds. Lemongrass, galangal — a blue ginger, hot chilies, kaffir lime leaves and basil form the flavor principle that gives this cuisine its unique taste. The restaurant is still BYOB. I recommend a Gewurztraminer, which always marries well with spicy Asian fare, or a nice cold beer. Edward and I began dinner with Tom Yum, a lemongrass-based broth with a choice of either chicken ($4.95) or shrimp ($6.95). Steam was rising from the deep bowls placed before us. The hot-and-sour broth imparted a distinct flavor enhanced

by lime juice, kaffir lime leaves, basil, fresh button mushrooms, galangal and a touch of turmeric which gave the broth a rosy/orange color. My shrimp were perfectly cooked, retaining a bit of bite. From the appetizers, we selected Koong Sarong ($7.95) and Sai Krog ($6.95). Both are authentic Thai and Laotian starters. The first one consisted of three large, marinated shrimp generously wrapped with thin, fried, crispy egg noodles and served with a sweet plum sauce. I picked up a shrimp with my fingers, dipped it into the sauce and took a crunchy bite. It always amazes me how fine Asian chefs can fry thin noodles so crisp and totally free of grease. I found the sauce a bit too sweet, but this is a matter of personal taste. Our second appetizer was in direct contrast in flavors and texture, with the shrimp. You may be surprised to find that Laos is famous for its sausages. Four fat, slightly spicy pork sausages were fashioned with lemongrass, garlic, kaffir lime leaves and fragrant jasmine rice. They were chargrilled, emitting a slightly smoky flavor. I enjoyed how the chef was able to keep the natural casing a little crunchy. There are few things worse than a mushy sausage casing. A small mound of shredded cabbage and eye-appealing carrot rosette came with both appetizers. If you are watching your calories but want to enjoy a tasty dish, order the whole steamed fish for two ($29.50). It takes abut 30 minutes to properly cook so be patient. There will be much reward when you take the first bite. The fish of the day was striped bass. It Restaurant Review:

was steamed in a light, tasty broth fragrant with lemongrass and can be cooked truly hot and spicy or on the more mild side. The owner waltzed over to our table bearing a large fish-shaped metal platter set upon an oval, hot pot. The fish had to be at least three to four pounds, and was served head to tail. This never bothers me. Whole fish is best steamed with its bone and skin. If it had been served on a platter, we could have helped ourselves. But since there was a small fire on the hot pot, the fish was filleted for us. The striped bass was so fresh, my first taste was like a hug from the sea. Black bass has a slightly sweet flavor that can be enhanced by any type of sauce. The broth was lovely with lemongrass and a bit of chili. Bite-sized bits of broccoli, rounds = Very Good

of thinly sliced carrots and shredded Napa cabbage added a bit of texture to the dish. And don’t forget to enjoy the skin. A bowl of rice came with our dinner. Ratchada was doing a fine business, including takeout, on the night we dined. hinamoto, the newest ground-level addition to 777 S. Broad St., rolled out the red carpet May 21 to welcome guests for its official grand opening. It was a chance for rising 26-year-old chef Sunny Lin to put his international sushi skills on full display. He gained valuable knowledge on the techniques on proper sushi preparation while growing up in the Chinese province of Fujian. At the age of 16, he came to America and, shortly thereafter, found work at several popular New York-based restaurants. “He flew to America to learn about fusion-style sushi,” Chinamoto manager Kelvin Lee Sin, who served as translator, said. “He learned from the best places in New York.” Ten years later, the timing was right to take on the leadership role at the Hawthorne establishment that also features Thai and

Thursday afternoon Lin, with all of the ingredients in front of him, performed a demonstration on how to prepare his White Tuna Tartare Sushi, which he and Lee both advised not trying at home. However, that would take the fun out of this weekly feature, so they provided a couple of useful tips. “Making sushi is very difficult because the knives are super sharp,” Lee said. “You can try it at home [using] extreme caution.” Also, the majority of the ingredients can only be purchased as speciality markets.

After Mr. Jeffs passed away, Mr. De Leuca came into her life. This led to their marriage which was an exceptionally happy one. With their children grown they were able to enjoy a couple cruises and a trip to Hawaii. Lena is survived by her daughter Linda Jeffs Rebuck and Twin Sons Frank & John Jeffs, her 5 grandchildren; Timothy, Tamara, Elizabeth, Maria & Rachel, 4 Great grandchildren, and Brothers Alfonso and Pasquale Pellecchia.

Funeral arrangements were private. Your Prayers will be appreciated.

In Loving Memory of

I asked the Lord to bless me with an angel in my life, a woman I could treasure as a loving friend and wife. And so you came from heaven as the answer to my prayer, and changed my world forever for the the one to be my wife. WE miss you always and forever loved

t 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, Joe D’Emilio is enjoying his physical maturation yet is not shunning the simultaneous need to build up his mental acuity. The sophomore at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., relied on both blessings May 16 as he hurled his way to a second-place shot put finish at the PIAA District 12 AA Championships. Having initiated his track and field existence only three months ago to complement his football talent, he subsequently qualified for last week’s state meet. “As long as I focus, I know I can achieve anything,” the resident of the 1300 block of Reed Street said Tuesday at his East Passyunk Crossing institution. “I’ve had great support but even I’m a bit surprised it’s all come together like this.” Taking the advice of first-year track coach Lincoln Townsend, D’Emilio decided in February to be a two-sport performer and selected the discus and the shot put as his disciplines. Having known nothing about either, he sought to gain confidence through each meet, especially his premiere, which he dubbed “not impressive.” “Gradually, I’ve been growing stronger and I know it’s going to take thousands of throws to make it where I want to be,” the teenager said. “Football is my focus but I’m not doing this for nothing. I still have to be serious about it.” Part of Townsend’s pitch involved convincing D’Emilio that he could easily squash the school’s shot put mark of 32-9, which he would go on to top in April with a 34-11 heave. Eclipsing that distance with a 35-8 chuck only days later, the Passyunk Square dweller began to feel even more motivated, with steady results in the discus also making his spring switch an introspective exercise. “I think about improving all the time, especially my technique,” D’Emilio, whose training regimen includes time at Columbus Square Recreation Center, 1200 Wharton St., said. “Whatever I get involved in, I do it to the fullest of my ability.” His adrenaline and ambition raging, he ventured to Northeast High School two weeks ago to test his brawn against that

of the area’s best competitors. As he had failed to advance to the finals in either event at May 11’s Philadelphia Catholic League Championships at Upper Darby High School, he set out to gain redemption and distinguish himself among more experienced foes. In his preferred endeavor, he propelled the shot put a career-best 39-9 to claim the second spot among 12

entrants, falling three feet short of victory. He guided the discus 87-11 to finish in fourth place out of 10 competitors. The former result guaranteed him a trip to Shippensburg University last Friday, where his 38-11 offering put him 23rd out of 24 athletes. “I wasn’t ready for states, but you live and learn,” D’Emilio said of the sting of

WHEN D’EMILIO NEXT aims to enter his school’s track and field annals, it will come after his having vied to lead the Saints to the pigskin postseason. Having taken up football two years ago, he has come to love its influence on his friendships and self-esteem. While those elements have appealed to him, the accumulation of triumphs has likewise compelled him, and last season he and his mates registered their program’s first winning campaign since 2006. “I knew we would be a solid team, and I owe a ton to the seniors for helping us to mature,” D’Emilio, who started the whole year at right tackle after having earned lateseason first-unit duties as a freshman, said. “I’m hoping this time can be even better and includes us getting into the playoffs.” For his role in the successful run, which included victories over Horace Furness, 1900 S. Third St., and South Philadelphia, 2101 S. Broad St., high schools, he earned Second-Team All-Catholic honors, a feat he also hopes to improve upon once an upperclassman. “The league is very competitive, and I want to make us better so that people think of us as a great football team,” he said. Courtesy of his efforts, those individuals had better view the Saints as formidable track and field presences, as the boys’ squad won the overall District 12 title, and the girls’ gang gave commendable performances to finish 12th out of 16 representatives. No matter what he accomplishes in the discus and the shot put, football will always head his preference list. “I definitely envision a pro career,” D’Emilio, with college interest already building, said. “If I continue to work, who knows?” A fan of world history, he enjoys being a part of local lore thanks to his fruitful track and field exposure. “I began to become stronger for football,” he said. “The records are a great bonus.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124.
