Opinions still mixed on SEPTA Route 49 At the latest public hearing on the matter, Grays Ferry residents weighed in on the seven-mile span that would connect South Philly to University City and beyond By Grace Maiorano SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

he three-and-a-half year conversation surrounding projected SEPTA Bus Route 49 continued last week during public hearings regarding the transit authority’s 2019 Fiscal Year Annual Service Plan, which proposes 15 new or amended routes throughout Southeast Pennsylvania. The latest version of Route 49 reaches as far north as Strawberry Mansion, weaving throughout major urban districts, including University City and Center City West, eventually stretching all the way south to Grays Ferry, stretching a total of seven miles near the Schuylkill River. Residents of Grays Ferry have expressed mixed feelings about the latest revised route, which has undergone several tweaks since its inception a few years ago. See SEPTA, page 8>>

Is it Yanny or Laurel?

I

n our infinite appetite for the trivia of life, America has gone bonkers over an internet hearing test known as “yanny or laurel.” In case you’ve spent the last few weeks on Europa and are not familiar with the phenomenon, the test consists of listening to a voice speak one word to determine whether you hear “yanny”or “laurel.” “Yanny” or “laurel” is now the subject of intense debate. I took the test and clearly heard “yanny.” Fran says it’s a wonder I heard anything. “You mean you didn’t ask the voice to repeat itself? Wonder of wonders,” is how I believe she put it (I’m not certain because I asked her to repeat herself and she steadfastly refused). Fran is skeptical of this test. “Skeptical” being her baptismal name. I’m sure she would claim to hear “Laurel” just to be obstinate. Uncle Nunzi took the test and swears he heard “provolone.” “Why would the voice keep saying ‘provolone’,” is how I believe he put it. (I’m not certain because I asked him to repeat himself and like my wife he steadfastly refused). One of my friends heard both words because he claims to hear everything twice. Sort of like Yossarian in CATCH-22 who saw everything twice. I am more interested in the origin of the test than in the results. Did some auditory scientist (is there such an occupation?) come up with this test, and if so, what exactly is it supposed to prove? Does whether you hear “yanny” or “laurel” tell us anything about our political leanings? For instance, I heard that Trump supporters are more likely to favor biscuits and gravy as opposed to brie and white wine. I don’t believe in those kinds of stereotypes. In fact, when I’ve been especially hungry, I’ve been known to drink white win with biscuits and gravy. Many politicians are secretly taking the audio test but are reluctant to tell us what they hear for fear of alienating half of their voters. For example, in our 5th congressional district, it is rumored that most of us hear “yanny.” In the la-di-da areas of Montgomery and Delaware counties, voters are more likely to hear the more elegant sounding “laurel.” I understand that Donald Trump kept hearing “Mueller” when he took the test. Kellyanne had to help him access the internet. I figure the difference in what we hear is based upon the range of our hearing. Some of us have difficulty hearing sounds in the lower register.

Until my wife corrected me, I thought Pavarotti was a soprano. Fran keeps saying, “I told you that you need a hearing aid. Desperately.” I claimed I couldn’t hear her. Husbands are very good at selective hearing. What puzzles me is that yanny and laurel don’t sound anything alike. Is the reason I couldn’t get a reservation at LAUREL because I tried to book YANNY on OPEN TABLE? I don’t think so. If I wanted ALEXA to play selections by the Greek composer and musician Yanni, I wouldn’t say, “Alexa, play songs by Laurel.” Actually, I don’t own an Amazon Echo. I’m afraid Alexa would refuse me and I hate feeling rejected. And even if I owned an Echo, I certainly would not be asking her to play Yanni. I suspect Yanni’s music is the eternal soundtrack that sounds celestial but is played in Hell to annoy the unrepentant. Note: Yanni’s real name is Yiannis Chryssomallis. It is reported that a reporter (I think it must’ve been Chris Cuomo) once asked Yanni why he changed his name. Yanni supposedly responded so that folks could wonder in later years whether it was his name or laurel they heard on the internet. People have told me that President Trump is giving the auditory illusion test to his staff to determine their loyalty. All of them, except for Scott Pruitt, claimed they heard “Trump” when they took the internet test. In a moment of candor, Pruitt admitted he heard “money.” Editor’s note: It is not true that a couple of wise guys downtown heard “moolah.” For the younger generation, “moolah” is slang for money – bitcoin to you. We administered the test to other public figures. Surprisingly none of them heard either yanny or laurel proving that celebs are indeed a different breed. As yet another public service to devoted readers of this column (all two of you), I share the results: Congressman Bob Brady – “retire” Union leader John Dougherty – “Scanlon” Mayor Jim Kenney – “rebuild” Chef Jose Garces – “bankrupt” Council President Darrel Clark – “quota” See CARDELLA, page 7>>

Second annual career fair in Grays Ferry set for June 2 The event will feature more than 100 job opportunities, aims to provide employment resources By Grace Maiorano SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

hile teaching first and second grade, Grays Ferry Civic Association Vice President Kyle Shenandoah conducted an experiment to maintain order in the rowdy classroom. Assigning students various tasks, like sharpening pencils or attending to the bathroom, he noticed a shift in their behavior – a correlation, he’d come to realize, that also exists in his backyard. “That next day was a transformed classroom,” he recalled. “That next day no one was getting in fights. Everyone was quiet. Everyone had their job. Everyone was responsible. And I feel like, in a lot of ways, that’s a mirror of what a lot of communities are like here.” Although he is no longer a teacher, Shenandoah wanted to continue this vision. Perceiving unemployment’s connection to a slew of societal concerns, Shenandoah kicked off an annual job fair last summer at the Salvation Army at Park Stinger – just east of the Forgotten Bottom in Grays Ferry.

Grays Ferry Civic Association Vice President Kyle Shenandoah, second from right) aims to build on the success of last year’s job fair with a bigger event on Saturday, June 2, at the Pennovation Center. While the event experienced a solid turnout of about 150 or so people, this year Shenandoah, along with a team of organizations, is aiming to amplify it, relocating the fair to the recently built

Pennovation Center on Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Recruiting more than 50 city employers and agencies, like SEPTA and PECO, and featuring nearly a 100 job offers, Shenandoah says the upcoming event hopes to reach as many South Philly residents as possible. From the University of Penn to the Urban League of Philadelphia, close to a dozen organizational partnerships from around the city are working to make the fair a reality. “I think it’s cool to have one big thing happen, but it’s important for something to be sustainable,” said the Grays Ferry native. “You want to have something people can look forward to – you want to have something people can count on.” The genesis behind the first fair stems from Shenandoah’s experience going door-to-door throughout the community, encouraging neighbors to vote for the next district attorney in spring 2017. But he realized that residents were more concerned with upcoming employment than the upcoming election, recognizing people are often more worried about immediate problems, like simply paying a household bill, than

If you go: For more information on the fair, contact Kyle Shenandoah at kyleshenandoah@gmail.com. The second annual career fair is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pennovation Center located at 3401 Grays Ferry Avenue. nationwide issues four years down the road. “It’s hard to ask someone for a vote when they don’t have work,” he said. From there, Shenandoah started posting hundreds of job opportunities on social media – a platform the Grays Ferry Civic Association has been working on since its inception three years ago. Along with addressing zoning issues and coordinating public services like Parent Cafés, when the RCO established itself, it considered the dissemination of public information as a cornerstone of the group. “No matter how big or contracted we got, we always maintained the communication with information that was coming down,” said Grays Ferry Civic

Association President Michael Bradley. “We’ve seen the neighborhood changing – not only demographics but just in the way of how neighbors communicate.” And while Shenandoah’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts were reaching some, he was thunderstruck once more when meeting residents, particularly older citizens, who did not even own computers. To tackle this “digital divide,” as Shenandoah describes, he started planning for that first job fair, aiming to foster more face-to-face networking. The second annual fair falls around the same time and place of conversation surrounding the projected SEPTA bus Route 49, which has been considered by the city over the past couple of years. The route, connecting Grays Ferry to Strawberry Mansion, will journey through University City, Center City West and Brewerytown – some of the city’s largest employment hubs. Shenandoah says the potential route, which would operate seven days a week, could transform Grays Ferry, satisfying his three keys to an improved community – housing, workforce development and transportation. “I feel like you solve those three things, that’s your way of addressing the poverty issue,” he said. “That’s your way of addressing class disparity. That’s how you build a community.” Hamlets throughout Grays Ferry, like the Forgotten Bottom, can quite often feel forgotten, as ideally the route – and the fair – will help to bridge the area with the rest of the city. Compared to its neighbor – the transformed Point Breeze region – Bradley says Grays Ferry still maintains a high level of apathy in some ways, which is why the job fair is especially needed in this locale. “To bring the fair is like ‘hey listen, there are jobs down there,’” he said. “We want you to go down there and poke around for some jobs, so I think it’s perfect.” “I could have done a job fair anywhere, but I kept hearing my neighbors say they’re looking for work,” Shenandoah said. “I wanted to make sure it was somewhere close. So, I brought it here to South Philly.”

<<Continued from page 1 However, despite debates and alterations in streets and lengths, Route 49, which plans to run seven days a week, retains its primary purpose – to provide easier access to the health, employment and transportation resources in University City. “When we realized there was a gap in our network, we decided to see what was there now in terms of residents striving to get to University City,” Anita R. Davidson, SEPTA management analyst, told SPR following the hearing. Davidson said, some years ago, SEPTA started receiving requests from the Fairmount community for better public transportation access to that region of the city, and eventually the transit authority was presented with similar thoughts from residents in Grays Ferry. “Once we saw there was a similar request in Grays Ferry, we decided to take a look and see if there was something we could do to address that need,” she said. Before embarking on a new project, SEPTA reflected on all of its current routes that travel though Brewerytown, Fairmount and Grays Ferry. Davidson said they noticed some of those routes, like Route 7 and Route 12, were activity avoiding University City, which is the second-largest central business district in the city. From there, SEPTA partnered with the University City District to conduct research about the demographics and traffic pumping in and out of the area on a daily basis. According to their 2013 findings, substantial numbers of University City employees commute from Fairmount with a significant population coming from Grays Ferry, as well. The research also revealed the area experienced a nearly 8 percent increase in job growth from 2007 to 2015, jumping from 55,000 to 75,000. But, they also found that among a large concentration of University City employees, there was a low transit usage. “That was an indication to us that there was potential for new riders to support that addition of operating expenses...That trend of employment is not going to plateau or decline anytime soon,” Davidson said. “So, it’s really imperative of the transit authority to make sure we have additional resources to meet that demand in place.” She says, when putting together an operating budget, a major consideration while implementing a new route or putting in additions to old routes is the assurance the bus will actually see riders. According to SEPTA’s fiscal year 2019 annual service plan, the annual revenue for the route is $1,052,902, offsetting the $5.8 million allocated expenses to about $4.8 million. Once research was complete, SEPTA started drafting designs of the route, which presented challenges, considering the Schuylkill slashes right through the ideal path. “Something really interesting about these neighborhoods – if you think about 33rd and 34th streets – is it exists on both sides of the river,” Davidson said. “And when you don’t have a route that connects those neighborhoods that are so proximate through that street grid, you’re really interrupting that network of transit services.” Davidson says, in South Philly, the first version proSee ROUTE 49, page 10>>

Part of Washington Avenue is getting a facelift I-95 cited as barrier to flourishing waterfront presence akin to NYC, Chicago By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

R

esidents and representatives from Langan, an engineering and environmental consulting firm based in Philadelphia, took to Gloria Dei (Old Swedes’) Church in Queen’s Village for an open house to discuss the Washington Avenue Connector Project, a plan to revamp Washington Avenue from Columbus Boulevard to 4th Street organized by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation. “The idea is that they redeveloped the Washington Avenue Pier a few

years ago and now they want to create a better connection between the city and the waterfront. So before we really dive into design for the project, we want to get the public involved and find out what the community wants that space to be and what their priorities are, said Eric Huefner, a project engineer at Langan. Ever since I-95 was built, many urbanists have considered it a primary reason why Philadelphia never quite had a waterfront presence like many other big cities like New York or Chicago have. Huefner called the interstate highway a “barrier, that the firm – and the city – is trying to overcome. The firm is also looking to residents

for input regarding how they can improve conditions for bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers along that stretch of the avenue. “The DRWC really wants this to be a connecting street, said Spencer Finch, a project manager and sustainability leader for Langan. “A street that pulls people to the waterfront and so people can see that there’s actually a river and some cool stuff to do here. Neighborhood residents who aren’t sure what to expect from the project can look to the Race Street Connector Project and the Spring Garden Street Connector Project – both of which are previously completed projects by the firm and the DRWC.

public plaza so people can do something instead of just standing there at the corner. Finch said that many people who drive along Washington Avenue between Third and Fourth streets weren’t even aware that Jefferson Square is located there. “If you clean that up a little bit then people will come out and enjoy the square. But there’s other places that can be improved. And we’re asking questions. Why do you think those places could be improved? Representatives from Langan said that the project is currently in schematic design and that residents can expect construction to begin in 2019.

In the case of the Spring Garden Connector, lights and other artwork were added under the I-95 bridge where Spring Garden Street runs underneath I-95. On Race Street, giant yellow arrows and letters that spell out “RIVER point toward the river, to create a beachlike atmosphere in the tunnel. There are yellow letters that spell out “CITY closer to the river, with arrows pointing in the opposite direction. “The landscape right now, quite frankly, is not something to look at, Finch said. “People don’t want to be on this stretch of Washington Avenue. So lights, it might be greening, it might be redoing the pedestrian spaces. Hopefully you have some extra space for a

<<Continued from page 8 posed northbound routes on 26th Street and southbound routes on 27th Street, but gradually moved west toward its current proposal of traveling northbound on 30th and southbound on 29th. In deciding the most ideal paths, SEPTA says it frequently communicated with residents most affected by the proposed route, especially those in Grays Ferry. Davidson stressed the community’s feedback is a major part of SEPTA’S route planning process. “It’s interesting in Grays Ferry, she said. “There’s a large group of people that really want this service, and the folks on 29th Street don’t want a bus on their block. While 29th Street was not included in the initial draft, this street provides access to the Grays Ferry Shopping Center, which Davidson says was requested by residents in Grays Ferry. However, during the public hearing, folks living on 29th and Tasker voiced various concerns, including safety and environmental issues, about the 49 Bus’ travel down their block. “I believe approximately 70 buses per day passing my house will severely impact quality of life for the residents of South 29th Street,

said resident Kathleen White. She says the street is already dilapidated with potholes and gravel, arguing that a 30,000-pound bus will further ruin the street bed. White also noted the large buses will cause increased air and sound pollution and present safety concerns for children and seniors. Davidson says all new SEPTA vehicles are hybrid or electric and that less pollution would be produced considering a decreased amount of car usage. Jenn Carbin, also a resident of 29th Street and board member of Grays Ferry Community Council, said she supports the route but not its relocation to 29th Street. “There’s a whole lifeblood of the community on 29th Street ‌ It’s a very old street,â€? she said. “It’s sort of a main thoroughfare, as well as being old and delicate.â€? Carbin said the community council supports the route, but not its current projection traveling so far south. Residents in the same area, including Grays Ferry Civic Association Vice President Kyle Shenandoah, sees the flipside of Route 49, advocating that it will provide access to employment for residents in a neglected part of South Philly. “A lot of people think (Unfor-

gotten Bottom) is a good name for our neighborhood, because people think they’re disconnected from the rest of the world,â€? he told SPR before the hearing. “It’s a spot in South Philly where they don’t fit in. I feel like this SEPTA route is going to solve that in one way or another ‌ If you can’t create jobs, at least make it easier for people to get work.â€? He says that while there may be some merit in moving the route to bigger streets, the whole premise of Route 49 is to grant isolated neighborhoods easier access to employment, health and transportation opportunities throughout the city. Public input, included written testimony, will continue through May 30. Once this period closes, a summarized report is submitted to the SEPTA board over the next month and a final decision, including any new revisions, will be made by June 21. If it is approved, Davidson says Route 49 could be implemented as soon as the end of 2018 or beginning of 2019. “We want to make sure this service works best for the community, because, in the end, it’s for them,â€? she said. “And, we want to make services that will be useful.â€?

Academy at Palumbo is PPL volleyball champ By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

F

or the first time since 2010 and only the second time in school history, the Academy at Palumbo is volleyball champion of the Philadelphia Public League, defeating Central High School three sets to one. It was the fourth year in a row Palumbo made it to the Public League Championship, but the team lost the first three years. “The core of my team was returning from last year, said the team’s coach, E.J. Goldstein. “They were very motivated to win the championship. Unfortunately, the team lost to Archbishop Wood High School in the Title XII District Championship. However,

it still qualified for the state tournament and is lined up to play Elizabethtown High School in the first round. The game was scheduled for this past Tuesday night, after the Review had gone to print. Goldstein said his team will have a challenge on its hands, saying many of the schools in Lancaster County compete at a “different level of volleyball. That being said, Goldstein thinks with such a tight-knit team with great leaders, they have a shot. He said the biggest leader on the team, who was also the team captain, was senior Bruno Vargas. “Bruno brings the love of volleyball and he’s like fire, Goldstein said. “Sometimes it’s his strength and his weakness. He gets emotional. He wants to compete. He brings that energy to the

they all love it. To get to the Public League Championship, Palumbo had to knock off South Philadelphia High School in the first round, Horace Furness High School in the second round and George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science in the third round. In Palumbo’s PPL Championship game against Central, it lost the first set, 25-20. It won the next three sets by scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-22 to win the championship. “We lost our first set, which was a wake-up call, said Vargas. “We had a great crowd. We got a lot of energy from them. We knew we’d come back no matter what. We stayed positive. We were hungry. Vargas, who is graduating this year,

is committed to playing volleyball for Eastern University next year. He said he’s excited to start training and dieting for the next season. “I want to show the coach that I’m hungry, he said. “I am very excited to go to Eastern. Vargas said he’ll be earning his degree in nursing while he plays volleyball. If it gets past the first round in states, Palumbo will have checked off two of its three goals for the year. The first was to win the PPL (check), the second was to win a round in states (potential check) and the third was to be the Title XII District Champion (unfortunately, due to the team’s loss to Archbishop Wood, it lost the Title XII District Championship). But, hey, two out of three isn’t bad.

table. He’s kind of like a point guard in basketball. He’s that culture on the court. Vargas spoke to the tight-knit friendship found among all the players on the team. “It’s pretty different from other teams I’ve seen, said Vargas. “Other teams - they don’t go out or play games with each other or make jokes or talk about actual personal stuff like we do. We would sit in the gym and talk about life and things that are going on and stuff like that. We knew each other so well. “The biggest difference between this team and the other three years that we made it to the championship is that this group really are friends, said Goldstein. “They have their own group chat and they bust each other’s chops and

Birds could turn the corner at corner

n the world of the NFL, where offenses rule, a great cornerback is a hard man to find. Often the best athletes on the field, cornerbacks have the game stacked against them: Cornerbacks can’t touch wide receivers five yards beyond the line of scrimmage and, thus, play a bit of catchup against the free-running pass catchers. The Eagles had quite a thing going at cornerback for more than a decade, with Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor ruling the field in the late 1990s and early 2000s, followed by the duo of Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown through 2008-2009 and then Asante Samuel from 2008-2011. But since then, they have had trouble filling the position with quality. High-priced free agents (Nnamdi Asomugha and Byron Maxwell) have flamed out. Lower-dollar options (Walter Thurmond, Bradley Fletcher, Cary Williams, Leodis McKelvin) didn’t last long. Draft picks (Eric Rowe) didn’t hang around very long. Now, though, the Eagles have a bright outlook at cornerback. They won the Super Bowl in the 2017 season with a combination of youth (rookie Rasul Douglas, second-year man Jalen Mills) and experience acquired in free agency (Patrick Robinson) and via trade (Ronald Darby). Robinson moved on in free agency, signing with New Orleans. The player to watch now at the position is one of their own acquired in the 2017 draft – Sidney Jones sat out much of his rookie season rehabbing the torn Achilles tendon that he suffered just before the draft and is now healthy and prepared to make his move. “I’m all the way back, Jones said after a recent Organized Team Activity practice at the NovaCare Complex. “I feel great. I learned a lot last year about being in the NFL, and it’s exciting for me to be back on the field. I want to show everybody what I can do.

At 6-0, 181 pounds, Jones has excellent size to match up against bigger NFL receivers, and his smooth acceleration and change of direction set him apart from the rest of the Eagles’ cornerbacks. Had Jones not been injured six weeks before the ’17 draft, he likely would have been taken among the top 15 draft picks. The Eagles nabbed Jones at No. 43 overall and are now hopeful for big things from him in 2018. “He’s in the mix, head coach Doug Pederson said when asked if Jones is in line to start at cornerback. Nobody has higher expectations than does Jones. He calls himself “a playmaker, and there’s evidence to support that selfconfidence after a brilliant collegiate career at the University of Washington, where Jones had 30 passes defensed and nine interceptions in 40 career games and was an All-American in his final season. Jones played in last year’s regular-season finale against Dallas to knock the rust off, and he’s full go in the spring for the Eagles. Just how much of a difference can Jones make? Well, if he plays as the Eagles think he can play, Jones just might be the shutdown cornerback this defense hasn’t had, really, since Vincent. Taylor, Sheppard and Brown were good, and Samuel was an interception machine, but none of them were truly in the “shutdown category. Jones just might be that good. He’s a player to watch through the summer and into the regular season as the Eagles hope their search for their next superstar at cornerback is over.

The prayer is to be said by 11 AM daily for 5 days. On the 5th day you will receive a single rose or more in some form, but only if your favor is to be granted.
