Ninth St., June 20, 151 seniors displayed a blend of gladness and sadness. Eager to accept acknowledgment for their four-year commitment to academic and personal

growth, they also entered with the proud yet simultaneously upsetting distinction of being the East Passyunk Crossing site’s final graduates. “This is a historical moment for you,” Principal Dr. W. David Bowman said. “You’ve done great work here, and as you begin to figure out your next steps, make sure you always stay positive.” Remaining upbeat might have sounded impossible March 7 when the School Reform Commission announced the shuttering of the 75-year-old location to chip away at the School District of

Blessed by a stranger

To the Editor: One night when I was returning home, a man stopped me on my doorstep. I had been stopped numerous times in my neighborhood; I figured he was going to ask for money like everyone else does. I stopped and turned, and he said, “Do you have a sandwich or anything I can eat? Tears were coming from his eyes. They were glassy and red; obviously from crying. He was not high or drunk. He was healthy looking. He said, “Anything is a blessing. I am hungry, I am on the streets, I have 20 cents and I don’t want money, just some food. My heart instantly broke for this young man. I didn’t care about anything at that point other than getting him some food. Everyone who reads this knows how it is to be approached by someone begging in the streets. We all trust our intuition and know when

we are feeding a habit, versus feeding someone whose truly hungry. We pray that every time we extend our services that we are getting it right. My judgement told me this guy legitimately needed help. Without hesitation, I went inside and told my mom that a man was outside looking for food and I wanted to help. We gave him some Combos, fruit, power bars, a roast beef wrap, a half gallon of iced tea, some smokes and $7. He told us his story, with tears in his eyes, and a quivering voice. Again, my heart broke for this guy. His wife left with his kids, he lost his job and home and he’s sleeping in the park. His family won’t help him and he spent a little time in jail. I admired his honesty. I said, “I’m sorry, buddy. I hope this helps. He replied, “This is a blessing. God bless you.

I didn’t get his name, and in retrospect, I wish I did. I can tell you that I’ve been doing a lot of complaining about the lack of a great jobs in my field of communications, missing out on opportunities to be a full-time musician and expressing discontent for some of the miniscule things going on in my life. I started to ponder. Maybe God sent that guy into my life at that moment to remind me I have it pretty damn good; things are never as bad as they seem and could always be a lot worse. After all I have a loving family, a beautiful caring fiancee, amazing friends, a roof over my head and a job that helps me pay my bills and live a little. I guess life doesn’t hurt so badly, and maybe he now knows that there are some caring people left in this world. Maybe it will give him a little boost or hope, some motivation to pull his life back together. Whoever he is, he changed me for the better in a matter of minutes. He thanked me 100 times that night. I woke up the next day realizing that

“I would probably go to Paris or Africa. Susannah Chapma, 12th and Dickinson streets

“I would save it for my son’s education or buy a house. Danielle Hutchinson, Broad and Jackson streets

he fourth annual Difference Makers issue will be hitting doorsteps this fall. Just like the last three years, the South Philly Review is seeking nominations from its loyal readers. Who are the Difference Makers in your community? Who are the people who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist others? Here is your chance to tell us their stories. They can be teachers, volunteers, coaches, doctors or any other profession. All entries will be reviewed by our selection committee, with the best ones being profiled in our very special Oct. 10 Fall Guide. Those who were selected previously are not eligible. In 250 words or fewer, tell us the story of your worthy candidate who resides or works in South Philadelphia and send it our way via e-mail, fax or regular mail. The entry deadline is noon Aug. 23. hree men, who helped to set up an armed robbery, acted as if they were innocent customers, with one buying cigarettes with the stolen money. The trio met at Seventh and Wolf streets at 6 a.m. June 18, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit. While one of the men entered Sav-Mor Pharmacy, 2237 S. Seventh St., to check out the scene, the others waited outside until the first suspect made a phone call. The gunman then arrived at the intersection, entered the store and demanded money while the other offenders stood as lookouts at the door and on the street. When the armed man fled the store, he dropped some money before heading westbound on Wolf Street with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. The first man to enter the store, who even put his hands up during the robbery, quickly picked up that cash and as the two lookouts entered the store, purchased a pack of cigarettes with that money. The offender who made the phone call was described as Asian, age 20, 5-foot-8, thin and wearing a dark-colored hoodie and blue jeans. The gunman was described as black, age 20 and wearing a mask, gloves and a backpack. The first lookout was described as black, age 20, 6 foot, thin and wearing a dark-colored hoodie and blue jeans while the second lookout was described as Asian, age 20, 5-foot-9, stocky and wearing a two-toned gray shirt and dark-colored cargo pants. Two men entered Kerrs Building Materials Inc., 1528 Washington Ave., while another stayed outside to serve as a watchman at 11:35 a.m. Saturday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Blocked call

A man was attacked as he walked to his car in Packer Park early Saturday. A 29-year-old man was walking to his auto with his 41-year-old brother-in-law after leaving a bar at 2:30 a.m. on the 3000 block of South 16th Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As they exited the tunnel on that block, a man tackled the younger man, biting the left side of chest and his lip and fleeing in an unknown direction. A private vehicle transported the man to Methodist Hospital where he received numerous stitches to close a gash to his lip, Tolliver said. The motive is not believed to be a robbery. The attacker was described as white, age 25 to 30, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, having dark-colored spiked hair and wearing a gray hoodie and blue jeans. MAKE US YOUR LAST STOP AND SEE! A man swiped $20 from a Lower Moyamensing corner store. The offender browsed inside Ho Choi Grocery, 2300 S. Ninth St., at 8:38 p.m. June 19, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He tried to reach for some merchandise behind the counter, which the 47-year-old female storeowner was standing behind, Tolliver said. When the worker denied him and asked what he wanted, he pulled a gray handgun from his waistband and pointed it toward the register. The woman stepped back as the gunman grabbed a $20 bill that was on top of the credit card machine and shoved it in his left pants pocket. The perpetrator fled from the store, heading southbound on Ninth Street. The robber was described as Latino or Asian with a light complexion, in his 20s or 30s, thin and wearing a gray and white plaid button-down shirt, dark-colored pants, a pink belt white sneakers, gray and white Air Jordan baseball cap and whiteframed sunglasses. pon nishing the nal note of her band’s 45-minute set Friday at Lickety Split, 401 South St., All My Uncles’ lead singer Gracie Martin ashed smiles toward her peers and the patrons. Grateful for the chance to helm the quintet’s premier performance, she also appreciated the greater significance of contributing to the inaugural Make Music Philly, a 12-hour celebration that relied on numerous venues, including seven South Philly sites, to mark the summer solstice. “It’s been amazing to be a part of a cool opportunity to spread the power of music,” Martin said. “For us, too, this has been great because it was our first gig and will give us an idea of where we are.” Consisting of University of the Arts enrollees, the group formed in February and had sought the right time to offer its blend of folk, rock and soul before using social media to learn of Make Music Philly in the spring. A descendant of France’s Fête de la Musique, which began in 1982 and has morphed into World Music Day, the local acknowledgment of tunesmiths stands as a collaboration between the City’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy and WXPN, the University of Pennsylvania’s public radio station. In organizing the day, the entities aligned Philadelphia with more than 500 global cities that have likewise welcomed the third season with song-fueled revelry. “We’re thrilled so many people have worked so hard to put it together,” Martin, a 21-year-old acting major who has been singing since childhood, said. “Because of them, we felt more relaxed about playing and hope other acts feel as fortunate.” The third act to take the Queen Village location’s stage, All My Uncles, like the day’s other entertainers, had needed to sign up for the 8-a.m.-to-8-p.m. bash, with artists able to receive consideration for more than one location. With 10 spots, including the Kimmel Center, Love Park and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Pop Up Garden, where Martin et al will make their next appearance Monday, Center City led the way, yet South Philly claimed second with seven, with Bainbridge Green, Fourth and Bainbridge streets; Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St.; Hot Diggity!, 630 South St.; Settlement Music School, 416 Queen St.; the Theatre of the Living

Arts, 334 South St.; and Xfinity! Live, 1100 Pattison Ave., complementing Lickey Split’s schedule through an assortment of genres, including classical and jazz, favorites for Declin McManus. “I’m new to Philly by way of Ireland, and I’m always looking for any sort of event to cater to my musical tastes,” the resident of the 1000 block of South 12th Street said upon making a mid-afternoon stop at Lickety Split. “I have my preferences, yeah, but who really cares about being particular when everything is free and in the spirit of trying to unite us through music?” ADOPTING “ALL DAY, all over, all free” as its slogan, the festival, along with its distinction as an offshoot of international gatherings such as those in Italy, Greece, Jamaica, Lebanon and the People’s Republic of China, helped Philadelphia to join notable metropolises like Chicago, New York City and San Diego. It also put an end to the inquiries of many curious citizens who had long wondered why their turf had not seemed eager to team up with its American brethren, many of whom have participated since the 2006 inception of National Music Day. Randy Bucksner had heard a few of those questions before Friday and beamed as music lovers strolled by Bainbridge Green.

“It’s been a difficult birth to bring something here,” the personality from Tri State Indie, a North Philly-based music source for artists, fans and promoters, said as he distributed guides at the Queen Village park. “It’s involved a bunch of grassroots community work and has all been in the name of reinforcing that music is moving and inspirational.” Bucksner noted the overseers selected venues that could support their mission of conveying that Philadelphia possesses a vibrant musical identity that receives strength from anyone’s attempts to make statements with instruments and voices. As Bainbridge Green has a committed friends group whose redesign plans include strategic and decorative lighting, improved sitting areas, enhanced landscaping and the possible erection of a sculpture and a food garden, organizers deemed it a great stop for residents and Queen Village visitors to appreciate singers such as Charlie Sweeney. “Philadelphia is a great music city,” the Warminster resident said shortly before his hour-long fusion of Irish traditional tunes, classic rock, country and blues, with original pieces in the mix. “It’s amazing it’s taken this long for it to get involved, but now that it is, and with a little more publicity, because this time it was lacking, I think

the festival can be a real benefit to all of our communities.” Having plied his trade for 41 years, the Bucks County dweller has enjoying mastering the trumpet and guitar, garnering a steady stream of paying gigs. Often hearing that playing for free cheapens a musician’s craft, Sweeney shot back at that assertion by saying that regardless of monetary compensation, offering one’s talents always possesses the ability to inspire, which he sees as a product of the festival, its global predecessors and its probable successors. He used that attitude to guide him through his stint at Bainbridge Green, a morning turn at Old City’s Historic Headhouse Square Shambles and an evening show at the Kimmel Center. Lauding South Philly’s musical possibilities, he wished well to everyone trying to cause a ripple. “Many people have come because they’re doing it for exposure,” Sweeney said. “That’s great and I hope they get it. I’m here because I love playing.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

BOK FAREWELL

Architecture mattered little to the departing learners as they settled into their seats. Mixing tears and laughs, the white- and blue-clad teenagers reverently listened as salutatorian Hien Ho recounted their evolution from often brash freshmen to wise and wishful seniors. “The hard work has finally paid off,” the resident of Eighth Street and Snyder Avenue and commercial arts and advertising student said. “We will miss the high school experience and at the same time treasure it.” Set to attend Temple University as a nursing major, the Lower Moyamensing dweller earned a $1,500 Philadelphia Public School Retired Employees Association honor, contributing to the graduates’ $373,500 awards and scholarships tally. James Phillips, the only pupil to top Ho’s grades, drew applause upon the announcement of his cumulative $82,600 endowments from corporations and universities. “Four short years ago we came here, many of us unfocused, but now we’re a unified family,” the valedictorian said. “All of you have helped me, and as we separate, we have to remember that graduation is the first step in the journey of life, which we should live to the fullest. We will B-O-K.”

A PROJECT OF the Public Works Administration, Bok opened in 1938 and came to help the country’s cause in World War II by training numerous workers, including USS Alaska crew members, whose vessel docked in The Philadelphia Navy Yard, 4747 S. Broad St., for alterations shortly after its ’44 commissioning. With thousands of success stories in its annals, the institution picked up two more major accolades within the last year, designation from the Anti-Defamation League as a No Place for Hate zone and commendation from the Michigan-based Nocti for stellar scores on career and technical standardized tests. Those and other honors came to the forefront when Tom DeFelice received warm applause before beginning his commencement speech. “I had many of you for health and physical education, and you all got As, so that’s why you’re clapping,” the retired coach and educator, who spent 43 years at the facility before leaving in 2011, said. “Anyway, I want for you to think about the changes you’ve gone through and consider the ones you will encounter and realize the key to understanding them all is education.” The former Bella Vista resident explained that the learners must proceed by relying on their faith, families, friends and foundations, or building blocks, tab-

bing their teachers’ advice to persevere as a sure guide to remaining viable in a competitive world. “I still do exactly what Mr. DeFelice told them to do,” Ben Latimer, a resident of the 1200 block of South 16th Street and a 1988 graduate who never had the Glen Mills inhabitant as a teacher but holds him in high regard, said. “They’ll all do just fine.” Outgoing athletic director and chemistry teacher Frank Natale, who played football for DeFelice as a West Catholic High School attendee, and succeeded him as Bok’s baseball and football coach, followed him at the podium to distribute awards to athletes from 11 sports, endowing Phillips with two for his track and field and wrestling exploits. “Bok has given me a sense of fulfillment and purpose, and Mr. Natale has been a huge part of that,” the Northeast Philly denizen and class president said. “No matter what we’ve pursued, though, everyone has been so supportive.” With emotions soaring after their singing of R. Kelly’s “The World’s Greatest,” the adolescents began to ascend the stage to accept their diplomas, with some electing to do casual walks and others engaging in creative jaunts to pick up the proof of their dedication. “This part always gets me because I know how many sacrifices so many of these kids have had to make and how many hardships

they’ve gone through,” Natale, a resident of the 1600 block of South Juniper Street, said upon shaking hands with one such figure, Antoine Whitney, an All-Public wide receiver and defensive back, whose sister, Nyesha Whitney, became a homicide victim in Southwest Philly four years ago. “It’s a shame they’re going to be the last group, but you couldn’t ask for a better bunch to be the last ones to call themselves Bok graduates.” When Melvin Phillips became the last commended student to have his name called, the auditorium erupted, with even more cheers coming after class vice president Mia Spady instructed her peers to move their tassles to the right of their caps. Belting out the three verses of their alma mater by ’41 graduate William M. very election season, the politicians cynically re-discover the subject of education. “Our children are our most valuable resource,” they say. “They are our future.”

Call them today. Tell the politicians to send a budget to the Governor’s desk with the right priorities -- that funds public education and puts our children first. Not just because it is the law, but because it is the right thing to do.

But, then, the funding of education takes a back seat to politics, big business and big money.

It has been said that a politician thinks of the next election. A statesman, of the next generation.

Twelve years ago the state took over control of the city school system but not the responsibility for it. They’ve gotten it all wrong. But, there’s still time to get it right. It’s not too late to fix the problem – a statewide funding problem. But we all have to band together and demand that the politicians keep their promise.

We’ll all remember who did the right thing – 7 those who choose educating our kids over 7 politics.

A Pennsport resident used a health setback to launch her career in culinary education. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

s Christina Pirello had expected to succumb to leukemia 30 years ago, she deems each day a delightful occasion to laud that which saved her — healthy cuisine. Carving out a successful career as a natural and whole foods expert, the Pennsport dweller hosts an Emmy Award-winning public television series and pens books addressing the medicinal makeup of meals. “It’s our birthright to feel well, and I think we’ve forgotten what it’s like to feel that way,” the 57-yearold said Monday from her home on the 200 block of Dickinson Street. “In many ways we’ve become our own worst enemies, but that’s partially because we believe so-called authorities too easily.” Pirello experienced a bout with doubt in 1983 upon learning she had acute lymphoblastic leukemia and no more than nine months to live. With cancer having claimed numerous relatives, including her mother, she initially felt fighting would prove futile and planned to perish in Italy. “Then I met Robert,” she said of her husband of 25 years, a whole foods touter who

LIFESTYLES suggested dietary modifications. “Initially I had thought it would make no difference if I switched from eating pizza to brown rice, but I listened and learned.” Having trusted her family’s food-based home remedies, staples of her northern New Jersey upbringing, Pirello accepted her eventual spouse’s tips and became cancer-free after 14 months through adopting meal plans laden with beans, grains and vegetables. Compelled to give back, she decided to make cooking, which had served as her first calling and had teamed with illustrating to form her professional existence, her lone vocation and means to promote improving longevity and satiety. “We’re marketed to virulently, and the material is often subversive and subliminal,” the nutrient navigator said of corporations’ methods for distancing people from eating “real food.” “We need to gather around the hearth more and take control of our health.” Pirello began backing her beliefs earnestly in 1988 by offering cooking classes, which have come to be multifaceted looks at the science behind food selections, even involving a four-month program dealing with the energetics of meals and Chinese medicine. Instruction has endowed the vegan with added concern for conveying

that change, although often daunting, will add more years to one’s life and put extra life in one’s years. Teaching has also hatched her most recent and unexpected endeavors — writing and overseeing her own show, “Christina Cooks.” “I had never intended to write,” Pirello, whose early 2014 e-book will become her eighth publication, said of scripting cooking manuals, “because I had not been one to use measurements. Instead, I was someone who loved developing and playing as elements of preparation.” Formalizing recipes for the New York City-based Penguin Group, she became introduced to receptive readers and reviewers, with ’07’s “Cooking the Whole Foods Way” winning distinction from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine as the “Healthiest Cookbook of the Decade.” “I’m not mad at consumers,” Pirello said of her target for ’11’s “I’m Mad as Hell and I’m Not Going to Eat It Anymore.” “I’m mad at what has been done to our food supply. There are many misconceptions about food, especially that no matter how well we eat we’re going to fall prey to certain diseases and that we can get away with eating junk food. There’s so much to learn.”

HER BEAU SUGGESTED in 1995 that Pirello take to television to intensify her outreach, yet she shunned the idea for two years before heeding and presenting her collection of pointers. More than 200 American stations air the show, which nabbed an Emmy Award its first season, with Discovery Health helping more than 50 countries to give her international favor. “I’ve enjoyed the entire journey,” she said of rallying support for contemplating what fuels people. “As I’ve taken on more responsibilities, I’ve become much more tolerant and less zealous because I’m realistic and the goals are to make small steps and to show that plant-based diets are safe and healthy. We have to live sensibly.” The macrobiotic maven, who enlists her partner as her executive director, paired with him five years ago to found her eponymous health education initiative, a nonprofit organization seeking to set everyone along the path to enhanced health. The brainchild has allowed her to visit numerous schools, including A.S. Jenks Academics Plus, 2501 S. 13th St.; Delaplaine McDaniel, 1801 S. 22nd St.; William M. Meredith, 725 S. Fifth St.; and George Sharswood, 2300 S. Second St., where she and pupils recently constructed an 85-foot

hummus sandwich. “We really need to help our children because in many ways, what is happening to them is criminal,” Pirello said. “South Philly, especially, has great nutritional potential, with farmers markets all around, and so many restaurants offering natural options. We just have to want to improve.” Peering at her garden, she noted vegetables resound as the best items to eat more of, with soda, which she labeled “toxic,” as the top deterrent to well-being. “I call for buying a new vegetable each week and cooking it,” Pirello said. “Use more herbs and spices, too.” Set to leave next week for Italy, Pirello said she feels incredibly alive and energetic and yearns for others to emulate her. In an era where many live to eat, she stresses the need to reverse that stance. “We have to understand then embrace a better way,” the 30-year South Philadelphian said. “Let’s give ourselves the power.” SPR For more information, visit christinacooks.com. Paving the road to hell

O

jumped into the debate with both wingtips. Clinton joined those folks on the right, who like to challenge Obama’s manhood, implying the president is a “wussie.” Clinton received little or no criticism for publicly calling out an incumbent president. So let me be the first. Clinton was out of line, way out of line. If a former president has some advice for the current president, you tell him privately. Obama doesn’t have to prove his bona fides against Middle-East crazies. His administration took out bin Laden. Obama’s use of drones has demolished much of alQaida’s leadership. But he made a huge mistake when it came to Syria — not by being reluctant to get involved, but by publicly drawing the infamous red line regarding Assad’s use of chemical weapons. Obama publicly backed himself into a corner. Assad has already killed 93,000 of his own people, mostly by ways not involving the use of chemical weapons. I just don’t get the moral difference. Dead is dead. Killing your own is killing your own. Our involvement in Syria should be based on having an opposition to Assad that promises a good outcome for the Syrian people and the interests of the United States, and has a reasonable chance to be successful. But that’s not what we have in Syria where most of the rebels are al-Qaida types. Obama is being told he depends too much on polls, that it is up to him to lead the American people and not pay attention to their opposition to getting involved. Sometimes that works like when Roosevelt took us into war to fight the Nazis. The stakes were clear. The interests of the U.S. involvement in Syria are anything but clear. One thing history has shown us is that we don’t succeed in intervening in wars without the support of the American people. Just because Russia and Iran are helping Assad is not a reason for us to get involved. All our involvement does is raise the stakes of the outcome. It turns Syria into a proxy war between us and the Russians. Russia is not a democracy. President Vladimir Putin is not former leader Mikhail Gorbachev, but neither is Russia the Soviet Union. We don’t need a resumption of the Cold War. It made for some great John le Carré novels, but its return is in no one’s interest. We need to be able to fix our economy and focus on Americans who are out of work. I don’t believe all of the wars we have gotten ourselves into since World War II have been for sinister reasons — that we want empire or, as in Iraq, oil (actually it is the Chinese not the United States that is getting most of the benefit from Iraqi oil). But good intentions or not, we have paved our own personal road to hell with them. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) arrives at college in “Monsters University.”

Eye for a prequel ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

lot of viewers will (and should) walk into “Monsters University” with skepticism. Not only does Pixar’s 14th feature exhibit the cash-conscious franchise-itis to which the studio was once immune (it’s a prequel to “Monsters, Inc.” and joins such follow-ups as “Cars 2” and the just-announced “Finding Dory”), but it also comes in the lackluster wake of Pixar’s artistic peak, feeling, like “Brave,” as if a lesser company could have made it. The plotting is rather standard-issue, and whereas films like “Up” and “Toy Story 3” struck uncannily human chords, “Monsters University” settles for familiar and only semi-poignant beats. Still, this remains one of the better bigname pictures of the summer, succeeding in recapturing the spirit of its 12-year-old predecessor, and never failing to entertain for even a moment. Exploring the origins of cycloptic Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) and freckled furball Sulley Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman), the movie is a kind of family-friendly “Animal House” packed with creepy critters, each of them vying to become the best “scarers” at the prestigious, titular institution. That’s an especially tough hurdle for Mike, who has the book smarts down, but, as is coldly observed by the odious, centipede- and dragon-like Dean Hardscrabble (voiced by Helen Mirren), isn’t inherently scary. Bitter frenemies at first, Mike and Sulley bond when they join an unpopular fraternity and compete in the scare games, a campus-wide monster competition that, after some mishaps that get under Hardscrabble’s scales, proves the unlikely duo’s only hope to remain enrolled in the school.

“Monsters University” isn’t as thematically resonant as its predecessor, which, in artfully demystifying notions of monsters in the closet, served as a kids’ entertainment that also quelled their bedroom fears. But the prequel is considerably funny (frat geek “Squishy” Squibbles is a hoot), it’s as visually detailed as Pixar devotees have come to expect, and it manages to make the underdog tale seem somewhat fresh, which, these days, is about as common as finding a slimy creature under your bed.

K, so now we’re going to help arm the rebels in Syria — just small arms and just enough help to hopefully bring its president, Bashar alAssad, to the peace table. The administration assured us we won’t really get into a war in Syria — no boots on the ground as they say. Even John McCain and Lindsey Graham, the Senate’s version of Marvel Comics superheroes, don’t want boots on the ground. Somehow we found a “moderate” general that is not an al-Qaeda crazy who we hope will emerge from this mess and lead a new Syria. Balderdash (that’s a polite word for the American BS). It won’t work. Our enemies know it won’t work. The rebels know it won’t work. And maybe worst of all, the president must know it won’t work. We might as well forget about wasting the small arms that will inevitably wind up in the hands of al-Qaida. Just say a novena, Mr. President, you’ve got better odds of it working. Here’s why our latest policy in Syria won’t work. It’s too little and too late. It’s token gesture like dipping your toe into the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of February and hoping for warm water. The administration has been goaded into getting involved. I’m not sure it even believes a rebel government that is any better than what the Syrians have now would emerge. We’ve all heard the myth before of the “moderates” whom we arm, but turn out to be corrupt tinhorn dictators like the shah in Iran or worse a terrorist who turns on us like Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. Nevertheless, there is this clamor from those who still believe America can work its will on the Middle East. Yes, these are the same folks who thought we could turn Iraq into a beacon of democracy that would transform the Middle East. Last time I paid any attention to Iraq, the Sunnis and Shiites were beating the crap out of one another there. There is this phenomenon in American political life that no matter how many times you are wrong, like Bill Kristol of The Weekly Standard, you are still treated as someone to whom we should listen. It’s sort of like “Love Story,” Kristol and his neo-conservatives never have to say they are sorry. To be fair, established Democrats alsohave been imploring Obama to get involved in helping the Syrian rebels. Recently even former President Bill Clinton

Protect Young Eyes in the Technology Age (Family Features) Whether it’s a tablet with an educational purpose or a big screen displaying the latest video game, the use of electronic technology is skyrocketing among kids. In fact, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, children ages eight to 18 spend more than seven and a half hours with electronics every day. Unfortunately, all of that screen time can cause eye fatigue, and ultimately have an impact on your child’s overall vision and eye health.

Dental News

Nice Care Dental located at 1320 Ritner St.

Philadelphia, PA 19148 in South Philly welcomes back Dr. Hong Ni. Our new office hours are

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and every other Saturday. Please come and join us and celebrate

your beautiful smile. Call our office to make your appointment today (215)-389-3876.

To view things closer, our eyes automatically adjust by drawing inward; our pupils get smaller to focus, and our eye muscles adjust so we can see a clear image. As a result, extended use of electronic screens can cause tired, blurry or irritated eyes. Intense focus on a video screen also leads to a diminished blink rate, which can result in eye injuries.

To help protect your child’s vision, consider these tips from Ameritas, a leading provider of dental, vision and hearing care plans: · · · · · · · ·

Know that prolonged use of electronic devices can exacerbate underlying eye conditions, so electronics should be used in moderation. Limit screen time to two hours or less a day (including watching TV, playing video games and using mobile phones). Encourage intentional blinking while electronic devices are in use to help refresh eyes with natural moisture that helps prevent bacterial infections, dry spots and corneal breakdown. Reduce additional eye strain by managing glare from windows and using low-watt bulbs in light fixtures. Keep computer screens 20 to 28 inches away from the face. Practice a rule of 20s to give eyes a rest. Every 20 minutes, ask your child to look at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds before refocusing attention up close again. Move around and change positions periodically while using a device. Watch for signs of eyestrain while electronic devices are in use, such as squinting, frowning at the screen or rubbing eyes. If vision problems or discomfort arise, schedule an appointment with an eye doctor for a professional evaluation.

When taking into account time at the office in front of a computer screen, many adults regularly use electronic devices for as long as, or even longer than, their children. Following the same advice not only sets a good example, but it can help protect your own eye health. For additional information and tips for managing eyestrain while using electronics, visit www.ameritasinsight.com. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Although there is no scientific evidence that computers and handheld electronic devices directly cause vision problems, using these devices wisely can help prevent eye fatigue and strain, as well as associated headaches, blurred vision and dry eyes.

W

hen the weather doesn’t cooperate for a family trip to the Shore, bring some edible, sandy fun to your youngsters right inside your home. Phyllis Liberati shares her summer treat, Sand Dessert, for the little ones. The resident of the 2300 block of South 11th Street suggests serving the finished product in a flower pot or sand bucket with a shovel. This surely will be a fun snack that the kids will shovel up throughout the warmer months, especially on rainy days when the beach is out of reach. SPR

Saigon Cuisine, which is located in University City, offers a taste of Vietnamese dishes from chef Kamol Phutlek. P h o t o b y K at h r y n P o o l e

Saigon Cuisine lacks the refinement of Le Viet, my favorite Vietnamese restaurant. The dishes also lacked the freshness and eye appeal of the ones I have enjoyed on so many occasions at Nam Phuong. University City is filled with restaurants that cater to students. Jose Garce’s Distrito comes to mind. The Mexican dishes are tasty and inexpensive. I am pretty certain Saigon Cuisine is the only Vietnamese restaurant in the area. It is a shame the food we sampled was be= Very Good

or more than 40 years, Thai and Vietnamese immigrants have contributed to and influenced how Philadelphians cook at home and dine out. One such chef is Kamol Phutlek. He arrived here from Thailand and began cooking at La Panetiere, once the city’s finest French restaurant. Phutlek mastered the art of French cooking, met Steve Poses of Frog/Commissary fame, and was Frog’s first chef. For many years, Phutlek owned Nan, his glorious French/Thai restaurant at 4000 Chestnut St. It was a serene room washed with pastel shades, crisp linen and colorful flowers. I enjoyed many dinners at Nan and still dream of the duck with Thai flavors. Phutlek suffered from back problems and retired a little while ago. I heard the space recently became a Vietnamese restaurant. My culinary curiosity was up. The restaurant is now Saigon Cuisine and it is BYOB. I felt a sense of loss as soon as Edward and I stepped in. The beauty of Nan has been transformed into a non-descript room with simple banquettes, tables and chairs. The alarm usually goes off in my head as soon as I see a long menu with color photographs of suggested dishes. There were a number of young people in the restaurant and every one of them were eating pho. Our server told us the restaurant has been open for about four months. He was familiar with Phutlek’s menu and style of cooking. “Because we have so many students,

our portions are bigger and the prices are lower,” he said with a smile. The menu features typical Vietnamese fare simply presented. Vietnamese spring rolls ($4.25) arrived with lettuce, sprigs of fresh mint, pickled carrots and turnips along with a sweet dipping sauce. Summer rolls are often a highlight of Vietnamese cuisine. At Saigon Cuisine, one receives two cool fat rolls ($5.50) filled with too much vermicelli, bland shrimp, pork, bean sprouts and basil. A few pickled vegetables came with the appetizer along with a very thin peanut sauce on the side. I’ve enjoyed Vietnamese food in many restaurants, but have never heard of bun. Our server said these dishes are very popular and are served like a salad. I always have a sense of adventure, so we ordered the bun with grilled slice pork ($8.50). A large white bowl was filled with rice vermicelli, bean sprouts, shredded cucumber, lettuce, mint, crushed peanuts and topped with some bite-sized slices of pork. Our server poured some fish sauce on top of the ingredients and tossed it up. Unfortunately, it was rice noodle overkill in the bowl. All I could taste were cool noodles and a slightly sweet sauce. The bits of pork were OK, but the dish did not win any stars. Crispy shrimp with minced pork sauce ($13.95) fared a bit better but I found it too salty. Small shrimp were coated in minced pork and quickly stir-fried. They arrived on a bed of shredded lettuce that added a cool contrast. We shared a small bowl of steamed white rice.

Growlers Bar’s Broiled Trout

“A

s soon as I was able to reach the stove, my grandma had me stirring the pot of gravy,” chef Jerry Donohue of Growler’s

Chef Jerry Donohue

Growlers Bar Owners: Jason Evenchik and Jay Willard Opened Oct. 5, 2012 736 S. Eighth St. 267-519-3242 growlersbar.com

Bar, 736 S. Eighth St., said of his early cooking memories. Donohue never attended culinary school, calling his educational background the “school of hard knocks.” He studied biology, but eventually left to find a job in the kitchen to pay off his school debt. “Next thing I knew I was a lifer in the kitchen,” he said, noting roles in suburban Philadelphia before landing at Growlers. The avid fisherman enjoys utilizing fresh, local ingredients whether it is shopping in the Italian Market on the way to work or utilizing a farm in the Poconos to supply the main ingredient for his Broiled Trout. He even imports the truffles from Italy, but encourages those trying to recreate the dish to purchase a more economical version from DiBruno Bros. Those visiting the eatery may see the Massachusetts native — who relocated to 10th Street and Passyunk Avenue shortly after Growlers opened last fall —

greeting guests and even bringing dishes directly to their table. “We enjoy having people who come five, six nights a week for dinner,” Donohue said. “... It’s nice to have that real neighborhood feel.”

TROUT INGREDIENTS: 1 fresh Pennsylvania wild or farm-raised trout 2 tablespoons of truffle butter

TROUT DIRECTIONS: If purchased, ask for the trout to be deboned with the dorsal and lateral fins removed.

BRUSCHETTA INGREDIENTS: 2 slices of red onions, grilled and diced 1 large ripe heirloom tomato, diced 1/2 of a head of escarole, washed at least three times and cut in small pieces

the butter in the pan until melted. Turn the broiler on high. Place the trout on an oiled, ovenproof pan skin side up. Place under the broiler for a minute. Turn over the trout and top with truffle butter. Return to broiler for about two minutes or until cooked through. Remove from the pan and place on a serving plate. Top with warm bruschetta, drizzle any butter remaining in baking pan over the trout. SPR

1 teaspoon of garlic, minced 5 basil leaves, torn into pieces 1 tablespoon of truffle butter 1 teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil

BRUSCHETTA DIRECTIONS: Place the olive oil in a hot skillet and swirl around for five seconds. Add the garlic and onions and sauté for 20 seconds. Add the escarole and sauté until tender but still bright green. Season with the salt and pepper. Add the tomatoes and basil and cook until the tomatoes are warmed through. Remove from the heat and add the truffle butter, swirl

because of his unflagging attention to his scholastic identity. “That really picked up in 10th grade, and as my grades improved, I figured I would give my all to my studies,” Brinkman, who will enter Penn undecided on his major yet is drawn to engineering, said. “With that said, I believe GAMP really prepared me for the rigors of what’s to come.” Maintaining close friendships with other prominent South Philly ballplayers, Brinkman likely will not join them in playing summer ball. Regardless of whether a coach will have the luxury of adding his name to a lineup over the next two months, he will practice on his own and be ready for the fall. He also anticipates the end of the year, as it will find him preparing for his New Year’s Day involvement with the Pirates Wench Brigade. “I’ve been in the Mummers Parade since I was 11,” he said. “It’s the best time you can have besides playing baseball.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Call Eileen

Holy Spirit, You who make me see everything and who shows me the way to reach my ideals, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You, who are in all the instances of my life with me, I, in this short dialogue want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones. Pray this prayer three consecutive days straight without asking for your wish. After the third day your wish will be granted. Promise to publish your dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted.
