GRACE MAIORANO/ South Philly Review

A Philadelphia Magic Gardens patron walks through “Down Below: A Reaction to Our Times,” by Latin American artist Ornella Ridone. Ridone uses discarded clothing of Mexicans to depict their country’s flag. Visitors walk over the artwork, representing Americans’ perception of being superior to Mexico.

I

understand that we live in a time when every issue is likely to divide us into two tribes – one for President Donald Trump, the other against him. I don’t like it, but I am doing my best to live with that reality. On one issue, though, the question remains, have we finally reached a moral breaking point in America? When it comes to this Administration separating children from their parents and placing them in chainlink cages, are there enough of us to cry out, “no more!”? If we can finally put aside our partisan bickering just this once, we can redeem our country from the shame that is enveloping us. Do we have the guts to stand together and force the White House to end its heinous policy? We have reached moral breaking points before in this country. We became convinced that the price for winning the war in Vietnam was not worth it after seeing a photo of a child racing down a street in flames from one of our napalm bombs. And we said, “Enough!” During the civil rights movement, we saw Alabama Sheriff Bull Connor use fire hoses and dogs on protesters that included women and children. And we said, “Enough!” We saw photos of tortured and abused prisoners at Abu Ghraib. And we said, “Enough!” See CARDELLA, page 4>>

n a sunlit afternoon last week, twinkling mosaics glinted in the curious eyes of a bustling crowd, as several visitors zigzagged through the eclectic indoor and outdoor galleries of the Philadelphia Magic Gardens.

Exhibit at Philadelphia Magic Gardens encourages visitors to re-examine Mexico relations

Approaching the first room, tourists were unsure whether they should walk upon a tattered creation, entwined with red, white and green clothing, that was sprawled across the floor. The folks didn’t take more than a few moments to make a decision, as the piece had seemingly been walked over every day. But, little did they realize, their action was emulating a much larger concept.

In PMG’s latest exhibition, “Down Below: A Reaction to Our Times,” Latin American artist Ornella Ridone uses a concoction of textiles to illustrate North Americans’ perception of Mexicans falling geographically, culturally, economically and morally below the rest of the continent, according to Ridone. “We really believe in giving artists freedom to See DOWN BELOW, page 9>>

CARDELLA: When will we say ‘enough’ of this?

<<Continued from page 1 Last week, while members of the Trump Administration and the president himself uttered lies defending the current separation of children from their families at the U.S.-Mexican border, we saw and heard the evidence of those lies. We heard the cries of the children being taken from the arms of their mothers. We heard the voices of border guards joking about “the orchestra of their screams. And, in ever greater numbers, we are saying to Mr. Trump, “Enough is enough! This is a president who famously said during the presidential campaign in 2016, that he could shoot someone in broad daylight on 5th Avenue and not lose voter support. But this time it we must tell Trump, “You’ve overreached! The President and some members of his administration, and yes, his network of choice, FOX NEWS, have tried hard to either justify the cruel, heartless child-separation practice or deny that it is going on, in the face of evidence to the contrary. Laura Ingraham, a commentator on FOX, compared the detainment of kids in cages to “summer camp. During a cable news discussion of a Down syndrome child being taken away, Trump spokesperson Corey Lewandowski sarcastically said, “Whomp, whomp! In scurrying for cover, Trump and members of his administration have contradicted themselves over and over again, sometimes in the same sentence. Trump denies the practice exists, but then blames the Democrats and Obama for causing it. He falsely claims that Congress must act to change a law even though such a law does not exist. There is NO law that forces the President’s Department of Justice to separate children from their families. Mr. Trump, who likes to brag endlessly about his power to change things, need only pick up the phone to stop his heinous activity. Do it on FOX NEWS in prime time if it makes you feel better, Mr. President, but for God’s sake, do it! These are families legally seeking asylum, not criminals “infesting (the President’s word) our country. As a people, we wouldn’t stand for the Government forcibly taking pets from their owners, let alone taking babies and young children from their mothers. Our president rants that the U.S. won’t be turned into a “migrant camp. His Attorney General invokes the Bible to justify this policy. In response, the Pope and major Christian groups have expressed outrage. Incredibly, the White House has NO specific plan for reuniting these children with their families. The images and sounds haunt the nightly news. The outrage grows. The President remains defiant. According to recent polls, 62 percent of Republicans support the border policy. However,

E D I TO R I A L C A R TO O N

there are some hopeful signs. All five living First Ladies of both parties, including Melania, have pleaded for the White House to stop separating children from their families at the border. The United Nations has demanded that we immediately cease and desist. Republicans in Congress are trying to distance themselves from Trump on this issue. They have responded with two separate bills to deal with the problem. However, both bills hold the children hostage to spending billions on the wall to pacify the President, while also cutting legal immigration. Mr. Trump hasn’t indicated that he’d sign either one. There is no justification for letting the Administration get away with trying to make this a partisan issue. This isn’t about gun laws. It isn’t about a fair minimum wage. It isn’t about whether government should cut or raise taxes. This isn’t about pro-life or pro-choice. This isn’t about liberals versus conservatives. This is about our collective humanity. Our higher angels. Americans have always acknowledged our past sins and tried to correct them. Anguished over the moral issues of our time. Agonized over our failure to live up to our ideals. As a child, did you ever think you lost your mother in a crowd? Remember the terror you felt? The trauma until you were reunited with her? That’s what thousands of helpless children are feeling right now at the border. Leverage. In the name of leverage, Trump has turned kids into bargaining chips. Pawns in their game. (Note: On June 20, President Trump signed an executive order that ends his policy of splitting up families at the border. There are still practical and legal obstacles to ending these separations. His order doesn’t address those who’ve already been separated.)

Tell us your news.

We’ll tell everyone else.

Kitchen Crawl set to benefit community-owned grocery store By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

his Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the South Philly Co-op is hosting a Kitchen Crawl to raise money for a new community-owned grocery store to be opened on the 2300 block of South Juniper Street. The co-op’s website states the store “will be a hub for community and food-centric education, south of South, river to river, and will be owned collectively by its membership. To date, according to board member Leigh Goldenberg, more than 900 people have paid an equity stake in the business. At the event, attendees will meet at the future site of the store at 2301 S. Juniper St, and travel around in small groups to five nearby homes of member-owners to dine on food and drinks, which will be supplied by local businesses. Local businesses supplying food include pizza spot Birra, a new fermented food/kombucha store called Phickle, craft cocktail bar The Thirsty Soul, Essen Bakery and coffee from Equal Exchange. “I personally think that a cooperative grocery

store is going to solve so many issues in our neighborhood and country, Goldenberg said. She noted the food supports small businesses, which keeps the money in the neighborhood and reduces transportation, which has a positive environmental effect. It’s also oftentimes healthier for you, it’s a great way to get to know businesses in the neighborhood, and will often be farmed in a smaller capacity, unlike foods that come from factory farms. “Factory farming has a lot of downsides in terms of chemicals used or practices used, said Goldenberg. “A lot of these are going to be smaller and more focused on creating a healthier experience. Also it just tastes better. The opening date of the new grocery store is contingent upon funding, but the co-op is hoping to have it open in early 2019. The Kitchen Crawl costs $30 for member-owners of the co-op and $40 for others. For more information about South Philly Food Co-op, including how to become a member-owner, visit southphillyfoodcoop.org.

TOM BECK/South Philly Review

Philadelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson speaks to residents at a public safety walk on the 1200 block of Fitzwater Street in the wake of a shooting that killed 16-year-old Symir Walker at the same location a week prior.

Kenyatta Johnson leads public safety walk in South Philly ‘We’re out here making sure they don’t feel like they’re hostages inside their home,’ councilman said at the event By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

P

hiladelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson took to the 1200 block of Fitzwater Street on Friday afternoon to discuss with local residents issues with gun violence, including one incident that happened one week prior to the event that left a 12-year-old injured and a 16-yearold dead.

“We’re out here making sure they don’t feel like they’re hostages inside their home,” Johnson said at the event. The event was also attended by Diane Williams from Moms Bonded By Grief, Greg Thompson from the Institute for the Development of African American Youths, the city’s executive director for the Office of Violence Prevention, Shondell Revell, and members from the Third Police District, including Capt. Frank Milillo.

“How are things going to change from the current conditions with gun violence in our communities?” Johnson said. “First and foremost, we should never live inside a neighborhood where, if a young person’s life is taken or a young person is shot, that [life continues as if it’s] normal, that life goes on as if everything’s OK. Any time any young person loses a life, any time a young person is shot in the streets of Philadelphia, but specifically in my district, I’ll always feel some type of

woe. Not only for the family most importantly, but for the young life that has been taken.” The 16-year-old victim has been identified as Symir Walker. The police department’s homicide Capt. John Ryan told reporters at a recent press conference he believed Walker was targeted. According to a report from the Inquirer, the victim’s mother, Allissa Jackson, believes the act was a random act of violence. “There is no gang out here, and my

son is not affiliated with any gang,” she told the Inquirer. “I’m out here primarily because I believe in this issue,” Johnson said. “We’re never going to move our neighborhoods forward if we don’t unite and get a grip on this particular issue.” After his speech, Johnson knocked on doors in the surrounding neighborhood to hand out packets of information regarding resources in the community for preventing gun violence.

DOWN BELOW: Exhibit explores U.S.-Mexico relationship amid tension

<<Continued from page 1 do whatever they’d like and give them that platform to be able to express themselves as much as possible in an honest way,” said Emily Smith, executive director of PMG. “One of the things we find very important in the time that we’re living is to try and give voice, or at least show where we stand on these issues that we should be reflecting on how we’re interacting with Mexico and how we’re treating other people in other countries.” The image of Americans’ mindless dawdling over the depiction of a Mexican flag, weaved together with clothing once worn by the country’s citizens, is one of a few aspects to the installation, which runs through July 8. Tackling ideas like immigration and consumerism that surface in the artwork, Ridone did not solely draw inspiration from Latin America but also from the streets of South Philly. “If you’re just plopped into a city and say ‘go absorb it’ – what you get out of that is quite interesting,” Smith said. Ridone was the inaugural recipient of PMG’s “Julia Zagar Residency for Women Artists,” which aims to feature artists from Mexico and South America. Last spring, the residency allowed Ridone, a novice to the city, to immerse herself in an unknown and unfiltered town where she was particularly thunderstruck by various Philly staples, including history and museums, yet also homelessness and litter. At the trip’s conclusion, she returned to Mexico where she crafted the majority of the artwork. Always with a sketchbook, Ridone drew scenes of the city from life, including places like the Mütter Museum and South Street police station. She later embroidered these images on red and white clothes which hang in a sequential order on the backroom walls of the gallery. Aside from Philly landmarks, Ridone was chiefly moved by materialistic and environmental component sites. “Consumerism is probably what impresses almost anybody coming from a Latin American country,” Ridone wrote in an email. “Multiple packages for any merchandise, thrown away food in every garbage can, pieces of furniture in the streets, fancy cars or brainwashing advertisements at each corner … silently suggesting – ‘have more, work more, earn more, buy more’ in an end-

GRACE MAIORANO/South Philly Review

In Philadelphia Magic Gardens’ latest exhibit, “Down Below: A Reaction to Our Times,” Latin American artist Ornella Ridone sketched sites of Philly from life and then embroidered them on clothes.

EXHIBIT: Runs through July 8 <<Continued from page 9 She mentions the exhibit is particularly timely now considering new immigration laws targeting Latin Americans and Mexicans benefit the United States. “This infinite hunger produces an evident imbalance in the equilibrium of the world, with immigration only one among all the above-mentioned spoiling pattern,” Ridone wrote. “The present political and social situation, both in the USA and in the entire western world, is demanding for transparency, justice and consciousness because we are in a very delicate and crucial moment that will decide the future of the entire planet.” For both Ridone and PMG, a key concept was choosing which medium would be used to depict these notions. Ridone, who is renowned for her textile creations in Mexico, felt discarded clothing of men, women and children from the country most accurately portrayed the message she was attempting to convey, as the art would not merely act as a showpiece but an experience for visitors. She also says ceramic and textiles are among the most ancient art forms of civilizations, even furthering humanizing the exhibit. Ridone’s approach to the project also aligns with PMG’s missions and values of highlighting foreign artists, as the museum features a permanent display of Mexican folklore artifacts. “The clothing were once worn,” said Adam

Mazur, exhibitions manager of PMG. “They’ve embodied the spirit of a certain society, or the certain culture … once it’s composted together to create the installation that’s in our gallery space, it’s a very reflective experience where you are literally walking on – not just the representation of the colors of Mexico – but the individuality of each person.” Both Smith and Mazur stress that, even though they were slightly concerned about audiences’ reception to the exhibit, visitors have been energized and engaging with the work. They say, like many of their featured artists, Ridone, wholeheartedly responded to societies, communities, and of course, the PMG space. They hope people feel propelled to shift their mindsets and behaviors about immigration and consumerism, especially regarding Mexico. Although, visitors may feel uncomfortable stepping on the “flag,” it should – and has – evoked a certain emotion. “My principal aim is to awaken some sort of uneasiness and discomfort in visitors,” Ridone wrote. “I would be completely rewarded if any of these three bodies of work would make people question themselves about their own lifestyle, their values, their system of belief, to increase in this way their consciousness about the world we are currently living in and the hegemonic role American society has claimed from decades to be the example other countries in the world should follow.”

Rookie TE Dallas Goedert eyed for immediate impact

T

he NBA just conducted its annual draft, and as fans and analysts debated the moves your 10-9-8-76ers made (I liked them!), the Eagles players were scattered across America, enjoying their last gulps of free time before training camp begins on July 26 at the NovaCare Complex. One of those players, safely ensconced in his hometown of Britton, South Dakota, is a rookie looking to make an immediate impact in the man’s world of the NFL. From boys to men. That’s the step taken by college players – basketball and football – into the highest level of sports in the world. They are just kids thrust into the spotlight working for teams that have invested millions of dollars and hard-to-calculate manhours into scouting and speculation.

Projecting that the players will transition from college to the professional game quickly is educated guessing, with a success rate of less than 50 percent. For the Eagles, the scouting that went into grading South Dakota State tight end Dallas Goedert was extensive. They sent personnel evaluators to his games in college. They interviewed his coaches, his teammates and his rivals. They did extensive background checks. They learned about his home life.

And when it came time to make the 49th overall pick in the spring NFL Draft, the Eagles tabbed Goedert and the projections were instantaneous. “The addition of Goedert will present a matchup headache for opposing defenses, said ESPN. “He is as ready for the NFL as any player in this draft, said Pro Football Focus. “He was my top-ranked tight end in this class. Philadelphia played with at least two tight ends on 350 snaps last season, so there’s plenty of ways to get (Zach) Ertz and Goedert on the field together, said ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. How hard is it to jump from college to the NFL, much less from South Dakota State to the National Football League? From A to Z, basically. “In college, Goedert said, “there are times when you are bigger and stron-

ger than the players on defense, so you know you have an advantage. Here, not only is every player a great athlete, he also has experience in the league as a factor to consider. Everything is different. The tempo is so much faster on and off the field. A lot happens. It’s a job. It’s a man’s game. The difference is a huge one. With all of those obstacles in place, Goedert made swift progress in the spring and he’s very much in the plans for the Eagles in the offense. In Goedert, the Eagles see Zach Ertz 2.0 – a passcatching machine with good athletic ability and sticky, reliable hands. If all goes according to plan, Goedert should provide immediate impact in the Eagles’ two-tight end set. He should make the quantum leap from a smaller-school football scenario (South Dakota State) to the rough-and-rugged NFC East. He

should be a man in a man’s world. It helps that Goedert turns 23 years of age on July 3, and having three years in college should aid in the transition. Still, there are no guarantees. The NFL is a wicked, uncompromising place to be. You either perform or you’re gone. The rush to judgment on Goedert has been swift, just as it has been for the Sixers and their draft-night daring. “You have to give a guy a chance to get acclimated and kind of grow into the game, Ertz said of rookies entering the NFL. “We don’t let that happen too often. The level of pressure, you just can’t imagine what it’s like. No, but we know how instantaneous the evaluations are. Goedert is the hope for immediate productivity and if he comes through, the Eagles have made themselves a better football team.
