Pomp and unfortunate circumstance To the Editor: Thanks to Joseph Myers for a sensitive and moving report on the last graduation of 75-year-old Edward Bok Technical High School (“Commencing kudos, June 27). Indeed this school has achieved many honors and championships, and can brag about some famous alumni, including actor Sherman Hemsley who made television history as George Jefferson in “The Jeffersons. What is especially sad here is that there is really nothing to replace this uniquely designed vocational school. Most of the undergraduates, as Myers reports, will attend class in the fall at Southern. But in spite of their optimism, it will be a challenge adjusting to another school environment and its existing population. We should wish them all well, and at the same time continue to question the motivation behind the endless dismantling of our public schools, especially successful schools like Bok.

Host a cleanup day on your block, complete with a get-toknow-your-neighbor barbecue. It bothers me so that our generation does nothing to stop the huge and unnecessary amounts of salt put into our foods that is literally killing thousands of Americans every year. I wound up hospitalized for days because salt caused a buildup of fluid in my lungs. I use salt at a minimum because I am very fond of the body God has given me. I am not by any stretch a health nut. Reasonable action will get you reasonable results. To all of my older friends, fret not, you can and must take charge. Let no one kid you, it’s really not hard to do and will make a huge difference to you. Give it a try. You will thank me for this advice. Well, I don’t take kindly to physical ailments and keep intending to go down fighting, which I do vigorously to battle the onslaught of gnarled and twisted fingers that I see in many older people. I make both hands into fists, squeeze tightly for the count of 10, release then spread and wiggle my fingers. I repeat this at least five times. It works, and I can continue to hold a pen and continue doing what I enjoy most — writing. Alzheimer’s, which my father had, scares me to death. Fight back, you ask? You can bet on it. Trash etiquette To the Editor: I hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather. Too hot for me, and too hot for stinky garbage. As the weather heats up, I thought I would send in a few helpful tips for dealing with trash in between pickup days. I learned this neat trick when I moved to South Philly. Freeze your trash. Take leftover food and put it in a baggie or what have you and freeze it until garbage day arrives. Better yet, take the kids on a fun filled drive to the sanitation center and throw your trash in the bins. On your way out on trash morning, pick up large items lying on the sidewalk and throw them in the nearest trash can waiting to be emptied by those nice men in the big white trucks. Same goes to those nice men — if you drop garbage, please pick it up and put it in the truck where we intended it to go. If there is a storm or high

n unknown man threatened to kill the father of a 6-year-old, who accidentally wet his car with a hose, along with spectators in Whitman Friday. The youngster was outside playing with a hose on the 2500 block of South American Street at 1 p.m. when a 2008 turquoise Mazda coupe drove by, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When the girl accidentally splashed the car, the unknown driver said, “You should watch what you’re … doing. You wet the inside of my car.” Her 26-year-old father came to her defense, saying, “Watch out how you talk to my daughter. She is only a little girl. She did not mean to wet the inside of your car,” Tolliver said. The driver had no sympathy, telling him “I will be back to [mess] you up,” Tolliver said. A few hours later the driver returned with another man who began a verbal dispute with the father, Tolliver said. The three men walked to the 200 block of Porter Street where the fight turned physical. At one point, the driver pulled out a gun, pointed it to the crowd that had gathered and said, “I am going to kill you all.” His friend directed him to put it away since children were present, but he repeated his action and statement again before the pair walked to the car and fled. No injuries were reported. The driver was described as white, age 20 to 30, 5-foot-8, 200 pounds, having black hair and wearing a white tank top and blue jeans. His accomplice was described as black, age 20 to 25, 5-foot-5, 130 pounds, having multiple tattoos and wearing a white tank top and blue basketball shorts. A man assaulted a boy in Point Breeze even though he was looking for his brother. The offender approached the 13-yearold on the 1500 block of South 20th Street at 11:50 a.m. Friday and said, “Don’t move. Where is your brother?” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When the boy responded that he didn’t know, the man struck him on the side of his head with a silver gun and fled southbound on 20th Street. A medic transported the boy to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he received two staples to close a gash to his

head, Tolliver said. The offender, who had been arguing with the boy’s brother earlier at 21st and Dickinson streets, was described as black with a dark complexion, age 26, 6 foot, 160 pounds, having a moustache and wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and black boots, Tolliver said. Delivery halted A homeless man and two others robbed a deliveryman in South of South last week. The 43-year-old employee from an undisclosed Chinese restaurant arrived via his motorized scooter on the 1600 block of Webster Street at 10:52 p.m. June 27, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Three men, two of whom were armed, allegedly came up behind him, struck him on the head with a weapon. As the victim fell to the ground, the trio allegedly stole his bike, cell phone and $500. A 29-year-old male witness followed Courtney Duncan, 19, who is homeless, flagged down police at 16th and Christian streets, Tolliver said. Police arrested Duncan on the 1500 block of Catharine Street and recovered evidence from Duncan that allegedly linked him to the crime. Duncan was charged with robbery, criminal conspiracy, aggravated assault, firearm violations and related offenses. Police did not release detailed descriptions of the other two offenders.

Robbed twice An unknown man swiped a pastry and then cash from a Newbold/Point Breeze corner store Sunday. The thief entered New Market Grocery store, 1800 S. 17th St., and took treat at 10:05 a.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When the 62-year-old male owner demanded payment, the man pointed a black gun at him and fled through the store. The storeowner pursued him, but then the thief returned to the store, taking $150 from the register before fleeing again. The robber was described as black, in his late 20s, 6 foot, 175 pounds, having facial hair and wearing a long, white T-shirt and jeans. t was supposed to be a drug deal, but then the defendant [Jermaine Henderson] turned it into a robbery of his friends,” Assistant District Attorney Lorraine Donnelly said of the crime that resulted in one dead and another wounded. Following a three-day jury trial, Henderson, 26, of Southwest Philly, was found guilty June 18, according to court records. He was convicted of two counts of robbery, as well as one count of first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and a firearm violation for carrying on the streets. He will serve a life sentence at Montgomery County’s Graterford State Prision. Henderson hopped in the back of a Pontiac Grand Prix at about 10:30 p.m. Dec. 19, 2010 on the 2500 block of Jackson Street, according to authorities. Bryant was in the passenger’s seat while a 25-year-old man was behind the wheel. Henderson was allegedly dealing, but he caught the pair off guard when he tried to rob them. When they hesitated, he got out of the car and opened fire, striking both men. The 25-year-old, whose arm and knee was wounded, drove to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and survived. However, Bryant, 26, of the 2300 block of South Bambrey Terrace, suffered from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and succumbed at the hospital. Henderson was arrested at Police Headquarters Aug. 9, ’11, authorities said. “I think these illegal transactions are the prefect setup for a robbery,” Donnelly said. “It happens more than you think.”

22; and Sovereign Bank, 2701 S. 10th St., July 27, according to authorities. Additionally, he attempted to rob a North Philly and Center City Bank of America July 11 and 19, respectively. After a halfway house employee identified Digman in bank surveillance video, authorities interviewed his mother, but she had not heard from him since his release, but revealed “He may be engaged in illegal activity,” according to the indictment. She informed investigators July 18, ’11 he requested money from her, but she denied him, and told investigators “that without income, he would likely commit another robbery.” Digman was arrested at a Bucks-County motel July 31, ’11. Digman, who authorities said was known to frequent South Philly, previously served 10 years for three ’02 robberies, according to court records. He was released July 1, ’11. In prison, Digman must complete the Bureau of Prisons Inmate Financial Responsibility Program and “intensive drug and mental health programs,” including 500-hour drug treatment and Allenwood Challenge programs, according to court documents. During his three years of supervised release, he must submit to drug testing, disclose his financial records and not open any more lines of credit or add charges to existing credit, according to court documents. He must pay an $800 special assessment and return $10,813 in restitution to the six banks. This includes $2,910 to Pennsport’s Prudential and $5,015 to Marconi’s Sovereign. He was ordered to pay $1,613 immediately upon sentencing and will pay $25 a quarter while imprisoned and $100 a month starting 30 days after his release. Interest on the stolen money has been waived. but I didn’t continue in school,” Bridgett said. “I never had the opportunity to learn, to be able to carry on.”

raduates were waiting in the hallway, dressed in red graduation caps and gowns. Family, friends and staff members were thrilled to watch the seniors proudly walk down the aisle to receive their certificates. However, this wasn’t the typical graduation. June 25 marked the beginning of a new journey for six South Philly senior citizens — many of whom were experiencing their first graduation. For participant Rosetta Bridgett of South Philly, graduating at age 65 feels very special. After attending Temple University in her youth to get her GED, Bridgett is now eager to go back to college to take an English course. She and 14 peers were among the class of 2013 graduates at Mercy LIFE, 1930 S. Broad St., where the site’s initial set of PEER advocates were certified to assist their fellow seniors, serving as a liaison between their peers and the staff. “I just wish I was able to graduate before now; that I would have continued in school

THE STATE OMBUDSMAN Office launched the Pennsylvania’s Empowered Expert Residents (PEER) Program in 2002 in long-term care facilities in Pennsylvania. However, Mercy LIFE is the first health center in the state to launch the PEER program, Beth Lorell, Mercy LIFE’s social worker supervisor, who is highly involved in the program, said. “The participants are taught to advocate themselves and peers,” she said. The enrollees learn their rights, quality of life and care, communication strategies, confidentiality, cultural diversity in addition to improving their quality of life at the center. To recruit for the initial class, a state-certified ombudsman went to the three Mercy LIFE centers to promote the program. This year, more than 50 people were interested, Lorell said. After a thorough recruiting session, the staff chose 15 people, based on their level of interest and ability to succeed, to partake in the five-week training session.

Six of those individuals — Bridgett, Wanda Brown, Angela Costanzo, Edith Hayman, Harry Schreffler and Diane Tully — are South Philly residents. Brown, a resident of 25th and Jackson streets, is participating in a graduation for the first time at the age of 64. “People come to me when they have a problem,” Brown said of why she decided to become a PEER advocate. “It seems like the perfect thing to do.” The program allowed Brown to learn more about herself and how to treat people who need help. “In my religion, we are supposed to love everybody and treat people right,” she said. “I learned that you have to be confident, that you can’t talk about what people tell you and you have to know the rules, like if they want to write a grief against someone. So all those things I didn’t know. Now I know so I can be a PEER counselor.” Brown devoted her life to others by raising a family and working as a radio operator for the Philadelphia Housing Authority Police Department. When she had time for

herself, Brown decided to become a companion and caregiver for the elderly. “I worked at the housing authority years and years ago.” Brown said. “When the kids got older and all, I went to school for elderly. And that’s what I did until I couldn’t do it anymore.” A first for many participants, graduation is a major part of the program, Lorell said. Bringing more than just certificates and badges, the ceremony created a sense of accomplishment for the graduates and staff members. “It is very empowering to them. They worked very hard for it,” she said. Meanwhile, the program, which allows certified advocates to assist at its Newbold, Grays Ferry and North Philly sites, increased the participants’ confidence in raising their voices. “Some of them served their country, their family,” Lorell said. “They believe in rights; they want to have their voices heard as strongly as possible.” SPR

We’ll address public safety problems and will aim to keep every resident safe.” To adhere to Nutter’s design, the center, with nearly 130 analysts, will operate every day of the year. Fittingly, the Philadelphia Police Department will have a strong presence through its Real-Time Crime Center, which joins the force’s Criminal Intelligence and Homeland Security units and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Watch Center. Amtrak and SEPTA police units, the FBI and the U.S. Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security also are upping senses of security, with regional partner agencies having established themselves there, too. “The center will support and enhance the activities of the numerous investigative, operational and emergency management professionals through accurate and timely information exchange,” Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey said. “Throughout this process, the protection of individual civil liberties and civil rights will be paramount and consistent with all federal, state and local laws.” FOLLOWING A RIBBON-CUTTING ceremony, the crime stopper and his colleagues headed to the second-floor Watch Center for further explanations of their goals. proponent of the “Let go and let God” adage, Rev. Richard Cannuli touts the rewards of opening hearts to inspiration. The native of the 1900 block of Mifflin Street is acknowledging his receptivity through “Sacred Treasures: Ever Ancient, Ever New,” a liturgical art and vestment exhibition making its American debut at the Baltimore Basilica following 2012’s successful European run. “The search for comfort is pervasive, as everyone’s on a life journey with numerous moments where consulting the divine becomes necessary,” the 66-year-old Augustinian priest said last week at the National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia, 1166 S. Broad St., the spiritual haven that initiated his religious vocation in 1966. “This show has become my latest way to advocate for that.” The brainchild consists of 32 mixed media and icon creations and eight vestments, a scaled-down yet

LIFESTYLES similarly compelling version of the previous presentation that saw time in Italy, the Czech Republic and Poland. Having struck a sponsorship agreement requiring placement in Baltimore, Cannuli prepared materials for the Maryland metropolis’ church, the United States’ first Roman Catholic cathedral, whose overseers opened them to the public June 19 and will display the pieces through July 21. “It’s very time consuming to put a show on the road, so to speak, but the whole process involves appreciating the need for reverence to God, expression of gratitude for blessings and communion with viewers of my art,” the 35-year faculty member at Villanova University, where he instructs watercolor, printmaking and icon and oil painting, said. “I consider myself a liturgical artist, and the link between liturgy and art can involve simplicity or pomp and circumstance depending on the situation.” For his Old World and Charm City expositions, with the first element also having included stained-glass works, the Point Breeze product drew from his allegiance to edicole, or small niches housing images of divinities, icons and vibrant vestments, with the middle components proving especially powerful. “Icons can offer extremely lasting lessons,” Cannuli said of the staples, mostly

paintings, of Eastern faith communities, such as those in Greece, the Middle East and Russia that have received mixed responses from Western church adherents, notably Roman Catholics and Protestants. “Images speak to us if we leave ourselves open to explore their depth.” The religious figure experienced his allure’s genesis in 1986, with 15th-century Russian Byzantine style, which he deemed the “highlight of iconography,” coming to fascinate him. Each rendering, including one of St. Rita, the patroness of peace, instills in him a greater appreciation for his perpetual student identity. “I love spreading the message of icons through teaching, but I’m always seeking, inquiring and wondering,” Cannuli said. “As a child, I hadn’t a clue what I wanted to do, and I still don’t because each day can offer a new road even if we seem content with our present one.” WITH HIS WATERCOLORS having earned exhibitions throughout the United States, Belarus, China, Greece, Italy, Russia and Spain and Egypt’s Holy Monastery of St. Catherine having recently added one of his icons to its permanent collection, Cannuli proves greatness can result from humble beginnings. His faith-filled family applauded dexterity, as his father practiced

carpentry and his mother’s side excelled at sewing. He began to explore art’s possibilities at 5 and within three years he had connected his creativity and budding knowledge of theology, with assistance from household statues of his relatives’ lauded saints, including Anthony of Padua. “I came to be always interested in making or building,” Cannuli, an alumnus of St. Thomas Aquinas School, 1719 Morris St., and Bishop Neumann, then 2600 Moore St., now Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., and a former attendee of programs at Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St., said. Upon venturing to the aforementioned shrine to offer a novena for an ill aunt, he met Brother Bill Harkin, whose tutelage and that of other friars led Cannuli to join the Augustinian order at 20, the same age he began designing vestments. He professed his vows three years later and became a priest in ’99 via ordination by the Most Reverend Louis A. DeSimone, pastor emeritus at St. Monica Church, 17th and Ritner streets. “The priesthood has given me more impetus to be mindful of art’s aims since I’ve sought to convey fully those visions, personalities, moments and connections between the past and present that my faith comprises,” Cannuli, who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Villanova

in ’73 and his masters in the same field at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute five years later, said. “As I go forward, I’ll be looking to increase my receptivity and hope inspectors of my work are as curious and reflective.” The frequent recipient of commissions is preparing stained-glass windows for a Prague church and will present “Cloud of Witnesses,” a collection deriving its name from the Epistle to the Hebrews, in November at University City’s Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. Like his savior before him, he eagerly puts out his message and understands not everyone will esteem it. “Hearing ‘yes’ or hearing ‘no,’ they’re both OK,” Cannuli said. “I will just go on making art and seeking solace.” As for “Sacred Treasures,” he might court additional locations if he can find backers, again calling on an “If-it’smeant-to-be” mentality with regards to his output’s outlook. “I’ve been blessed it often has been meant to be,” Cannuli said. “Once you let go, it’s like being on a roller coaster ride where things just happen. I’m eager to see what’s next.” SPR For more information, visit richardcannuli.org.

Paula Deen

Y

ou know things have gone “south” (if you’ll pardon the expression) when a stick of butter goes on TV to announce it’s disassociating itself from you. That’s right, butter wants a cease-anddesist order issued against Paula Deen so she can never ever use butter again in one of her recipes. It was bad enough Deen got diabetes and started hawking sugar-free recipes, but now she’s gone and admitted using the “N-word” in the past, and butter just can’t take it anymore. “Let her use margarine,” was the way butter put it when CNN’s Anderson Cooper (or is it Cooper Anderson? Who the hell has two last names anyway?) interviewed it. In case you’ve been stuffing your face with macaroni and cheese and missed it, Deen was deposed in connection with a former employee’s sexual-harassment suit filed against her and her brother “Bubba.” The employee claimed her workers used racist language. Under oath, Deen admitted using the “N-word,” but only when under duress or making a joke (I think Paula is still telling those “Little Black Sambo” jokes). One time she used the epithet when a gun was pointed at her during a robbery back in 1986. What she meant to say was, “I need a strong black man to help in my kitchen, are you interested?” As far as the jokes go, everybody knows you need a Jew, some blacks or a stray gay to make a joke really funny. Deen wants you to know just because her confederate bean soup is a menu favorite doesn’t mean she is yearning for the days of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler. However, she admits she wanted to stage a Southern plantation-type wedding for her brother, complete with “slaves” dressed in formal clothes while waiting on the guests and presumably Aunt Jemima cooking in the kitchen. Deen admits to a fondness for that time before the Civil War when the world was young and Thomas Mitchell’s character in “Gone with the Wind” ran Tara. But frankly, my dear, I personally don’t give a damn. Deen didn’t follow through on her plantation-style celebration because she thought the mean ol’ media (obviously populated with Yankee spies) would use the occasion to criticize her. Well, as far as Deen is concerned, they can take her biscuits and shove them where the sun don’t shine.

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

Deen also admitted to saying she would not stand by and let a piece of (slang for the female private parts) destroy her empire. If butter could blush, it would’ve over that one, but, of course, it can’t as the Geico commercial says, “It’s a stick of butter.” When confronted with the fact her brother “Bubba” often watched porn at the workplace and showed it to the employees, Deen professed a lack of concern. Now if he had hung a picture of Gen. William Sherman on the wall next to the menu, Deen would’ve really been ticked. She also was not very interested in knowing employers told sexist and racist jokes at Uncle Bubba’s (that’s the name of the restaurant, You thought it would be Le Bec Jefferson Davis?). Deen claims she’s never met a man who didn’t tell one. Since she’s been on the “Today Show,” that doesn’t speak well for Matt Lauer and Al Roker, does it? Speaking of the “Today Show,” the grits really hit the fan when Deen originally bailed on her TV appearance. She was scheduled to be interviewed by Matt Lauer. Instead Deen opted for issuing a videotaped apology of sorts where an interviewer wouldn’t be questioning her. She was promptly dropped by The Food Network, where she made her claim to fame. Deen’s mistake was not scheduling an appearance on “Fox & Friends” where she likely would’ve gotten a warm reception as another victim of the politically incorrect crowd. Hell, they would’ve even allowed her to make her famous baked Vidalia onions with morel butter. Did Julia Childs ever have to put up with this crap? Deen blamed her Southern heritage. If Paula is going down, honey, she is bringing the entire South down with her. Nevermind she unfairly stereotypes the entire South as a bunch of rednecks, just save her food empire and she’ll throw in an extra pad of butter with that corn bread. I am a product of my times, Paula Deen seems to be saying. Deen was born in Albany, Ga. in 1947. The initial landmark Civil Rights Act was passed by Congress in ’64, followed by additional legislation in ’68. Deen was 17 back then and has had 49 years to shake off her infatuation with plantations. In the interim, she has made millions and been exposed to successful African-Americans (one made it into the White House, Paula, and he’s not from Kenya). She has not continued to be stuck in the backwoods of ’40s Albany, Ga. Let’s be fair. Many white folks up north have used the “N-word,” black rappers also have helped to keep that word alive in their songs and youths toss the “N-word” around so casually it makes you want to cry. We can’t just sit back and point buttery fingers at Paula Deen. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Duncan (Liam James), from right, and Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb) are trying to fit in during a dysfunctional summer vacation in “The Way, Way Back”.

Hold ‘Back’ ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

I

t’s hard to believe that “The Way, Way Back” sprung from the minds of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, the same guys who co-scripted Alexander Payne’s near-flawless “The Descendants.” There are surface similarities, as the new film, like Payne’s Hawaii-set drama, is a work of perpetually sunny atmosphere, its shore-town setting juxtaposing narrative conflicts. But Faxon and Rash, making their feature debut as co-directors, deviate far from the humanity of their Oscarwinning effort, delivering an unlikable and unwittingly nasty follow-up, which negates its own attempts at coming-of-age warmheartedness. The title refers to where 14-year-old Duncan (Liam James) feels he stands in the line of human importance, and also where he sits in his family’s station wagon — the place where Trent (Steve Carell), the irredeemably mean boyfriend of Duncan’s mom, Pam (Toni Collette), confirms that the kid is a “three out of 10.” “The Way, Way Back” seems to think it proceeds to remedy that moment’s chilliness (it’s the opening scene), particularly with a bond that’s formed between Duncan and kindred spirit/surrogate dad Owen (Sam Rockwell), who runs the local water park. But despite the subplot’s sustained tenderness, the film oozes a feeling of icky disconnect, and squanders its cast’s embarrassment of talent. Ace actors like Rockwell and Allison Janney (who plays boozy neighbor Betty) could make mad, dramedic poetry while reciting takeout menus, but even they struggle to sell the script’s banal snark, which is uttered at lightning speed as if to hide that not much of value is said. Char-

acters tell Duncan to “cut his own path” and such, but the movie also winds up teaching him lots of privileged white elitism, as he gains confidence by learning to dance from some lowly black water-parkgoers, and is invited to sneer at weird folks like a cross-eyed kid and a gangly rental clerk (who’s no less off-putting because he’s played by Rash himself). The poor taste and unfortunate hollowness overtake the movie’s better moments, and its title ultimately points to where it should fall in your Netflix queue.

Recommended Rental Spring Breakers R Available Tuesday

Provocative, divisive, and certainly not what you’d expect, Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers” transcends its stunt casting of Disney princesses like Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens as part of its overall skewering of the messages media projects on society. Celebrating seaside debauchery while tearing it to shreds, the film is both dream and nightmare, and as it further empowers its bikini clad heroines, the cautionary tale becomes an unlikely feminist work. One of the year’s best movies. SPR Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-entertainment/movies.

The creamy pudding-like confection was scented with real vanilla and topped with fresh seasonal juicy berries. An individual chocolate hazelnut cake ($8.50) was akin to the chocolate lava cake. It arrived warm and was obviously baked with top-quality chocolate and topped with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream. Service was on the mark. It was unobtrusive, professional and caring. witter is an excellent source for restaurant news. When I read chef Mike Stollenwerk, who worked magic with sea creatures at Little Fish in Queen Village a number of years ago, was at the helm at Branzino, I could not wait to visit the restaurant. Branzino, a BYOB Italian restaurant, opened nearly 10 years ago. I enjoyed my dinner, but suspected Stollenwerk might tweak the menu. The bi-level establishment has yellowgreen walls, a crystal chandelier, pale yellow linen and lovely china from England. Our server opened the Muscadet we brought as Edward and I settled in to peruse the menu. Warm bread and a dish of olive oil with slightly salty black olives kept me happy as I decided on dinner. We began with a generous order of freshly grilled asparagus ($6), beautifully slicked with the right touch of olive oil and fresh herbs. Beet salads have become so ubiquitous that I usually pass on them, but Stollenwerk’s version ($9) was an inspired choice. A large mound of immaculately fresh, spicy watercress was topped with tiny cubes of roasted cool beets, a scattering of marcona almonds and small shavings of hard goat cheese. All it required was a few twists of the pepper mill. The flavors and textures in this properly dressed salad set my taste buds up beautifully for the next course. Risotto can be tricky. The rice is the star while other ingredients play supporting roles. The wild mushroom risotto ($14)

was about the finest I’ve had in any restaurant. Each grain of arborio rice was properly coated and cooked. It was blended with a heady mix of woodsy mushrooms and stock that added a creamy texture. Our server grated a bit of Parmesan on top of the risotto, I stirred it a bit and the rice spread, as it must, in the heated bowl. Orecchiette with chicken ragu ($14) also was outstanding. The little ear pasta was cooked al dente and topped with a mix of tender chicken, fresh herbs and bits of chopped fresh tomato. As Marcella Hazan always says, “a ragu must cling to the pasta.” Stollenwerk’s version surely did. I prefer a whole fish baked or grilled on the bone. Bones add flavor to any fish and a simple classic preparation always pleases me. Stollenwerk’s keen sense of how to properly prepare it was more than evident in the whole branzino ($32). A waiter carefully skinned and boned the whole fish with the skill of a surgeon at our table. He placed the fillets on a hot plate and napped them in a warm white wine butter sauce laced with tiny capers and bits of chopped fresh Italian parsley. Stollenwerk placed a handful of fresh grilled asparagus on the plate as a perfect tasty foil for the fish. Edward’s salmon ($27) consisted of a six-ounce center-cut fillet, covered in spices and grilled to perfection. It was slightly translucent inside, imparting a natural juicy flavor that we both enjoyed. Stollenwerk set the entrée on a bed of cool potato salad prepared with tiny fingerling potatoes. It was tossed with a bit of olive oil and fresh herbs. We did not need to

It was like there was no outlet for me.” Growing up, the Carlisle native honed her baking skills under the tutelage of her grandmother and mother. She and her three sisters continue to prepare baked goods for holidays, a practice that is “kind of competitive,” she said. The parallels between the precise nature of graphic design and baking allowed Ricciardi to part from her husband’s company and open Magpie, 1622 South St., where she offers an assortment of seasonal pies, including her Strawberry Rhubarb Crumb Pie, fries made from pie crust and pie-flavored milkshakes. “I started a second life,” the Drexel Hill resident said of open-

ing her pie shop. “Maybe it was a mid-life crisis.”

PIE INGREDIENTS: 1 pie crust 1/2 cup of granulated sugar 3 tablespoons of cornstarch Pinch of salt 1 pound of rhubarb, washed, leaves removed and cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 pound of strawberries, washed, hulled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

From escarole soup, roasted pork and meatballs during her annual New Years’ Day open house, to peppers and eggs, brown chicken with spaghetti, and breaded chicken cutlets on a Tuesday evening, her meals were near impossible to replicate. We all followed her recipes to a T. Even after many hours of observing, the flavor still was hard to duplicate.

Needing to beat UCLA twice to seal their site’s third march to the finals, they fell 4-1 the next day, with their score coming off his ninth-inning, basesloaded groundout. “I think we looked past UCLA and went against our mentality of taking one day at a time,” Zolk said. “That’s a shame because we had an outstanding group of guys and coaches who gave us so much, including interest in who we are becoming, not just as ballplayers but as people, too.” Knowing successes often follow setbacks, he anticipates a fantastic season for

his bunch, including the incoming freshmen with whom he already has interacted. As this season’s athletes accumulated the most wins in school history and he has gained a greater sense of his duties, he knows only one event can top what he deemed the most amazing year of his life. “We have the greatest fans at this school,” Zolk said of backers who also have successful basketball, lacrosse and soccer teams to laud. “I want to bring them a national championship.” ZOLK, WHO DERIVES his nickname from a former soccer coach’s belief that he resembles a boy who utters “Zoom, Zoom” in a car commercial, selected his postsecondary site three years ago. It had courted him as soon as he began to excel for Northeast Catholic High School. Transferring to Neumann-Goretti in 2009, he became a vital piece of the Saints’ lineup, earning First-Team All-Catholic nods in his two seasons and capturing the Blue Division’s MVP award as a senior, a year that saw the East Passyunk Crossing-based ballplayers win the league championship.

at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php “Just like at North Carolina, where I feel blessed, I really loved being around that team because we looked out for one another and had such ambition and drive,” Zolk said of his South Philly days, which he partially relived through receiving former teammates’ best wishes during his Nebraska sojourn. “I wish them well in their endeavors, too.” This year’s Saints, with his father, Mike “Big Zoom” Zolk, serving as coach, could not add a third-consecutive league championship plaque to their school’s hallways yet added their third-straight city title with a win over Prep Charter, 1928 Point Breeze Ave. Following their Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association loss, the elder Zolk traveled to Nebraska, where his son experienced celebrity status. Expecting to work only on his hitting and fielding, the young man also needed to polish his penmanship. “In a few years, I’ve gone from someone asking for autographs to being asked for them,” Zolk said of signing baseballs for eager children and adults. “We were around so many people who just love baseball and appreciated our play. We appreciated their enthusiasm, too.” If Zolk keeps elevating his game, he could soon be applying his name to a professional contract. Major League teams selected six Tar Heels in last month’s draft, and though he never makes assumptions on his baseball future, he hopes he can show scouts he deserves their consideration as a possible contributor to their employers’ chances. “I’m going to be excited to get back to the field,” Zolk, who is refraining from summer ball to concentrate on academics, said. “We have unfinished business.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. hrough his University of North Carolina-situated communications studies, Mike “Zoom” Zolk is acquiring added appreciation for interpersonal relationships. Though his instructors have proven instrumental, the 19-yearold alumnus of Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., last month received thousands of unforgettable pointers from strangers, as his Tar Heels ventured to Omaha, Neb., for the College World Series. “We enjoyed an amazing atmosphere and felt so much support from our fans who made the trip and especially the people of Omaha,” the junior-to-be said Sunday from North Carolina, where he is taking three summer classes. “Because of the excitement, I compare our time there to what goes on in Philly at the Mummers Parade, only our time lasted longer and lacked as many fancy costumes.” The Northeast Philly native and his peers had earned an automatic bid to the Cornhusker State-based competition as the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season champions. Entering as the nation’s topranked diamond dwellers, they initially emerged from the double-elimination regionals and best-of-three super regionals, both in their home state, by posting a 5-2 mark. For his efforts in the first set of tests, which included June 3’s three-hit, four-RBI performance in a 13-12 victory over Florida Atlantic, Zolk received an All-Regional selection. “For me, the year was about learning to handle pressure better, adjust to a leadership role and take advantage of my chances,” the second baseman, who after tiring toward his freshman year’s conclusion devoted himself to more intense preparation, said of the campaign, which saw him make 66 starts for the 59-12 club and improve his average 14 points to .269. “I really wanted to be at my best in the postseason, and we almost got it done, but no matter what, the whole experience made it
