ack in the day, the Fourth of July really used to be something in our family. Grandpop was born on July 4. We used to call it Independence Day. Maybe they still do, but I never hear the term anymore unless it’s some DJ introducing that Springsteen song. Anyway back then, most of our family lived in sideby-side row homes around 9th and Wolf. My Aunt Betty’s back yard was, by today’s standards the size of a postage stamp, but we thought it was glorious. And it was big enough for our celebration. We even had family halfball games back there. All of us idolized Grandpop. He put the “grand in “grandpop. A mane of silvery hair. The kind of hair that befits a king. He was beautiful if you can call a man “beautiful. As were the roses that he grew in his garden. Roses, corn, and figs. That was Grandpop’s crop. Kind of summed up who he was – elegant and practical. He was what was best about the Old World. You knew that whenever Grandpop visited, he’d be armed with fresh corn and figs. And, of course, beautiful roses. He was our greatest contribution to America. Our Yankee Doodle Dandy. He’d come here as a young man from the region near Naples. I never did find out exactSee CARDELLA, page 4>>

<<Continued from page 1 ly where. Italians like the Irish were vilified back then as lazy, dirty, and not bright enough for anything but back-breaking labor. Sort of like what we say about the new immigrants today. Yeah, I’m sure you’re about to remind me that our Grandpops came here LEGALLY. But it was an easier legal path back then. And it wasn’t as if he had much choice either. It wasn’t like he could swim the Atlantic or hope to cross in a row boat. And I have a feeling that if he had a family at that point and they were in danger of getting murdered in their own country, Grandpop wouldn’t have cared about the legal fine points either. This Fourth of July doesn’t have the same feel as the ones back then. It isn’t only because Grandpop ‌ and most of my family who worshipped him ‌ have been gone a long, long time. It feels different now. Sure, folks still hang out the flag. The smoke from the BBQ still smells fragrant and sweet. Fireworks still light up the sky. Politicians give speeches extolling what they like to call America’s “exceptionalism.â€? I’ve always thought our exceptionalism was based on a noble experiment. Kind of a crazy experiment at that. The idea that a nation of immigrants from countries the world over could somehow unify under one flag. That we could all believe in the same basic things even though we could fight like hell about the particulars. Hell, that’s what made us exceptional, not apple pie and baseball. But it all kind of rings phony now. The politicians know it. You know it. I know it. The world knows it. We really don’t believe in that noble experiment anymore. Oh, a lot of us still believe we’re exceptional. After all, this is our home. But pretty much everybody around the world believes their home is exceptional. The world believes in the concept of “Home Sweet Home,â€? unless, that is, some member of a drug cartel is raping and murdering their sister or their family is being systematically starved to death. And that’s when they swim the Rio Grande or walk hundreds or even thousands of miles to come here. To be safe. These desperate souls must be foolish enough to believe that the Statue of Liberty means anything more than a thing we can visit while we pretend that we still welcome the tired and poor humbled masses. These new immigrants don’t look like us or talk like us. They eat funny food made of stuff we throw away sometimes. They worship religions that we kind of snicker about. They tend to have too many kids. Pretty much what the Anglos said and wrote about our own grandfathers more than a 100 years ago when they came through Ellis Island.

Truth is we like to ignore the fact that this nation of immigrants hasn’t always been so welcoming. We gave the cold shoulder to the shiploads of Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. Turned them away with an indifferent shrug and sent them back to the death camps. We “relocated Japanese-Americans (U.S. citizens, not immigrants at all) during World War II. Took away their homes and possessions and sent them packing to detention centers, ostensibly for their own safety like we separate the migrants today at the border. Only for their own safety, you may be assured. And now we’re even thinking about deporting the sons and daughters of illegal immigrants back to their homelands – the homelands they’ve never seen because they foolishly thought that this was their homeland. The law’s the law, you know. So, we still fly our flags. We will gather in our backyards for BBQ. We will gather at Independence Hall and hear speeches from politicians that amount to patting ourselves on the back. And we will light up the sky with real pretty fireworks. We will all pretend as if nothing’s changed in America. Pretend we’re just one big happy family. The noble experiment is working just fine. Grandpop is gone. So is the America I once

Indego bicycle program set to expand into South Philly By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

I

ndego bike share program announced last week that it will grow this summer, adding at least eight stations to the system. Early summer expansion will include station and bike availability at the Navy Yard with connections at AT&T Station and FDR Park. Additional stations will be installed throughout the summer to provide more dock and bike availability in high ridership areas. As part of this expansion, Indego will grow to more than 130 stations and 1,300 bikes by the end of 2018. “Indego is a key part of the City’s commitment to expanding safe and accessible transportation options for all Philadelphians, said Mayor Jim Kenney. “Hitting the 2 million-ride mark this year is a milestone for the program. Indego will soon be available in even more parts of the City for even more Philadelphians to enjoy. Additionally, Indego’s title sponsor, Independence Blue Cross, recently extended its sponsorship through 2022. “It’s hard to imagine our city without hundreds of people every day riding Indego to work, exercise, run errands or visit Philadelphia’s incredible attractions, said Daniel J. Hilferty, president and CEO of Independence Blue Cross. “For us, Indego

is a commitment to the community and an expression of Fearless Fit, our campaign to make healthy lifestyles a goal that we pursue together. So, we are proud to extend Independence’s sponsorship of Indego through 2022. Indego’s expansion to South Philadelphia will give the Navy Yard’s 13,500 employees another option to get to and from the SEPTA Broad Street Line and travel around the 1,200-acre campus. Navy Yard Indego stations will be located at Crescent Park (Rouse Boulevard and Crescent Drive), Central Green (12th Street and Normandy Place), and 15th Street and Kitty Hawk Avenue. “We are thrilled to partner with the City and Indego to add three stations at the Navy Yard. Indego at the Navy Yard will complement the existing shuttle bus system, and give employees another fantastic choice to get to work, said Prema Katari Gupta, PIDC’s senior vice president, Navy Yard Management, Planning, and Operations. “We are also very excited for visitors and their families to use Indego to explore the very bikeable Navy Yard on weekends. This expansion comes on the heels of another successful year of the Indego bike share program, including the milestone of its 2 millionth ride in April 2018 and Indego’s third anniversary of operation. The Indego bike program was initially launched in 2015 with 60 bike stations and 600 bikes. It expanded in 2017 to 120 stations and 1,200 bikes.

Pennsport couple celebrates 75 years of marriage Ed and Kate O’Malley reflect on more than seven decades of marriage and life in South Philly By Grace Maiorano SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

O

ver the past three quarters of a century, Pennsport has experienced untold changes, as cotton mills crossed over into condominiums with countless businesses existing in the years between. But, as business, cultures and demographics came and then vacated the community, one couple has stayed rooted amid the metamorphosis of the South Philly neighborhood. On June 26, Edward “Ed” Patrick O’Malley, 97, and his wife, Kathleen “Kate” Jane O’Malley, 94, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary and lifelong residence in the Irish-American quarter. “In 75 years, so much has changed,” Ed said. Recalling memories from morning coffees with Babe Heffron to cows running loose on Moyamensing Avenue, the couple recently reflected on the cornerstones of their more than seven decades of union, reflecting on their children, their travels, and, of course, South Philly. “When you see those (wedding) pictures, it brings back memories,” Kate said. “We have to be thankful. … We were lucky. We had good kids, good grandkids. How lucky can you get?” After giving her a ride one night, Ed showed up at Kate’s doorstep on Halloween in 1942 to formally commence his courtship in costume. One accessory in particular, he says, whisked her away. “She liked the straw hat,” Ed said. After getting engaged the following Valentine’s Day, Ed, a graduate of Southeast Catholic, now Saints Neumann and Goretti Catholic High School, and Kate, a graduate of Edward W. Bok Technical High School, were married at Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ that June. Shortly after their honeymoon to Coney Island followed by a cruise to Wildwood, N.J., Ed served in World War II where he was stationed in the

On June 26, Edward ‘Ed’ Patrick O’Malley, 97, and his wife, Kathleen ‘Kate’ Jane O’Malley, 94, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary and lifelong residence in the Irish-American quarter. Pacific, including Guam while Marines constructed the U.S. Naval Base. After Ed returned home, the couple eventually moved into their current Moyamensing home in 1953, which actually belonged to Kate’s grandmother, who raised 10 children in the two-bedroom home, and is believed to have been in her family since the 1890s. Over the next several decades, the couple sparked an O’Malley lineage, as photos of four kids, 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, plus two on the way, adorned the walls of the home.

“I remember coming here as a kid and this just being the home hub,” said their grandson Ryan Lawrence. “The meeting ground for all of the families. … These are two of the most loving people. They’re the best role models you can have.” And while families flocked to Ed and Kate’s home, the couple consistently followed their kin wherever life led them – across the country and even around the world. When their eldest son served in the military or when their daughter moved to Europe, the couple traveled as far as Hawaii, Germany, Italy and beyond to check in on their children. As major Phillies aficionados, the couple even flew to Clearwater, Florida, where they met former outfielder Shane Victorino in

recent years to visit Lawrence while he was covering the team. While the couple says they can’t quite travel these distances now, their summers are still spent by the sea in Avalon, New Jersey. Yet no matter how far they journeyed, their hearts always led them home to South Philly, where, they say, between family and community, they could never envision themselves living anywhere else. “We were always satisfied here,” Kate said. “And the people are nice. They always treated us nice.” “I like South Philly. It’s very historic,” Ed added. In fact, the couple, whose ancestors descended from Ireland, also have archival traces around the neighborhood and even other aspects of American history. Ed’s mother’s side landed in Jamestown in the 1700s. His great-grandfather was captured by the Confederates at Gettysburg and taken prisoner to Virginia. Kate’s great-great grandfather was involved the 69th PA Infantry Regiment – an Irish Regiment that ended Pickett’s Charge. Bringing it back to the present, nearly 50 descendants of these forebearers planned to gather in Collingswood, N.J., this past weekend to celebrate Ed and Kate’s 75 years of marriage. Aside from the grand reunion, the couple even received a shoutout on live TV by sports broadcaster Tom McCarthy during a Phillies vs. Yankees game last week. While contemplating their lifelong companionship, Ed offered a few words of wisdom for lovers. “Respect each other and have a lot of sense of humor,” Ed said. “You need a sense of humor to get along.” For Kate, this milestone unmasked many things she says she took for granted all these years, like the persistent and passionate presence of her progeny who still make it a priority to visit them in Pennsport. “I say ‘I guess we did something right,’” Kate said. “Right, Ed?”

Italian Market scavenger hunt highlights new book Author Mary Dixon Lebeau will be at the market’s visitor center Saturday to help teams get started By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

R

esidents from Bella Vista and beyond are welcome to join in for the 9th Street Market Scavenger Hunt, which will be held Saturday, July 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Philly’s Italian Market. The market is linking up with Mary Dixon Lebeau, author of her latest book, Secret Philadelphia: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful and Obscure, to put on an all-ages event for those looking to explore more of the market and find

clues to win prizes. Lebeau will be at the Italian Market Visitor Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help teams get started by providing instructions and clues, and her book will be available for purchase. “One of the chapters [of Lebeau’s book] focuses on the Italian Market, and we thought it would be a lot of fun to work in some of the things in her book with some of the things going on in her market,” said the South 9th Street Business Association’s Business Manager James McCrone. The scavenger hunt was the brainchild of the business association together

with a few of its board members, Liana Ottaviani, who works at Fante’s, a cookware store in the market, and Eugene Desyatnik, the president of the Bella Vista Neighbors Association. At the visitor center where the scavenger hunt will begin, competitors will be given clues and maps to help them with the hunt. The winner will receive prizes, although McCrone said they’re still working out what exactly the prizes will be. A number of businesses in the market will be participating in the hunt, including Cappuccio’s, Fante’s Kitchen Shop,

Esposito’s Meats, Giordano’s, Gleaner’s Café, Grassia’s Italian Market Spice Company, Talluto’s, Bitar’s, Isgro, Villa di Roma, Cardenas, Italian Market Florist (cookie), and 12 Steps Down. McCrone said events such as this always draw a crowd. “It’s really wonderful,” he said. “You think what you think is a good idea and it kind of falls flat. But that doesn’t ever seem to happen here in the market. People like to jump in, which is really fun and gratifying.” After the hunt, Philly born/South Jersey-raised and now Memphis-based

Americana stalwart Dan Montgomery will offer a free performance at 2:30 p.m. outside Molly’s Books and Records, which is located in the market, before his headlining slot at World Cafe Live later that day. McCrone said it was “crucial” for the market to hold events like the scavenger hunt in an effort to interact with the community more. “We are a part of this community,” he said. “As a historic market, we are one of the reasons I think people move to this area. Interacting with our neighbors and the customers is a great idea.”

LANZA: Group seeks $20,000 for museum, scholarship fund

<<Continued from page 1 of the new location, which will occupy the first floor of the Reed Street building. The institute, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization comprised of volunteers, only has until the end of September to hand over the Montrose Street keys, as the museum hopes to move into Billotti’s location over the summer. “I think it’s important just to get across how this institute needs funding,” Bilotti said. “To promote this basic involvement of people. … This could create more people you can get access from.” The cornerstone of this access centers upon benefiting rising young classical musicians, as the institute, since it started, has financially supported more than 250 musicians from around the region – even reaching as far as Canada. Lanza “knew, as a young singer, what it took to get a career going,” Ronayne said. “So it was his dream to give young singers a start through scholarships.” Even though they’re modest prizes, the institute sees several applicants every year, as scholarships are awarded after an annual competition at Settlement Music School, which is later followed by a grand ball at the Doubletree Hotel in Center City. Recipients of the Mario Lanza scholarship, which include students of the Academy of Vocal Arts, Curtis Institute for Music, and Juilliard School, have reached exceptional heights, including appearances at the Metropolitan Opera House. Along with private sponsors and donors, scholarships are also funded by the Coccia Foundation based in Northern New Jersey. “It’s hard for (young musicians) … the kids need the money – even if it’s just for sheet music,” Ronayne said. “That’s what Lanzo wanted to do, but time ran out.” After Lanzo died at the age of 38, an initial ex-

Bill Ronayne, president, secretary and publicity director of the Mario Lanza Institute and Museum, and Pete Bilotti, owner of the Alexstone Marble & Granite Co., including its entire property on 12th and Reed streets, peruse the museum’s current location at the rectory of St. Paul and St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi at 712 Montrose St. hibition, composed of memorable items from the singer’s life and career, popped up in the back of Nick Petrella’s Record Shop on Snyder Avenue in the mid-1970s. Following a brief period on Broad Street, the display found a new home on the third floor of Settlement Music School in Queen Village in the 1980s, where it remained through the early 2000s. Finally, in 2002, the series of movies posters, costumes and other treasures found a home in its current location. Ronayne, who commutes from Brooklyn to maintain the museum, discovered the insti-

tute sometime in the 2000s. An opera enthusiast, Ronayne recalls his earliest memories of Lanza. Reflecting on his parents’ records, the New Yorker feels even more enlivened about this cause. “I’d hear him in the house,” he said. “When you watch him, he grabs you. The voice grabs you, but when you watch him, too, he has that magnetic personality. And that’s how it all started with me.” Along with modernizing the museum, including installing TVs screening Lanza films, this move will resurrect Lanzo’s legacy in a new way, as this relocation falls in the hub of Passyunk Square – one of several hamlets in South Philly

experiencing major economic and cultural revamping. Along with the common site of blooming condominiums, the immediate area will soon see even more renewal, as Columbus Square’s new construction project is set to break ground in September. Even the institute itself will be an addition to other performance art spaces, as Bilotti’s property is also home to Ballroom Philadelphia. “We’re reaching out to the community. Not just the Italian-American community but the community in general, because we want to be part of this area. … We want to make people aware of what’s going on. This community is being revitalized,” Ronayne said. “We thought this would be a nice fit for us.” Serendipitously, the new space happens to be just down the block from the collosal Mario Lanza mural overlooking South Broad Street, but, also, Giangiordano says the new location has more visibility than the last location, which will improve foot traffic, and therefore awareness, about Lanza’s legacy. “Me and Pete felt like we had an obligation to really help,” Giangiordano said. “It’s a collaborative effort. On my end and Pete’s end, and it was a moral obligation. We just had to do this to help (Ronayne) out, because (Lanza) is an important piece of South Philly history.”

fter a three-and-a-half year discourse surrounding SEPTA Bus Route 49, the transportation authority voted last week to implement the route during its 2019 Fiscal Year Annual Service Plan, which proposes 15 new or amended routes throughout Southeast Pennsylvania. After the launch of SEPTA’S Boulevard Direct Northeast Philadelphia last year, Route 49 is the second major enhancement to the bus network since 2017. Feedback from the community led to various versions of the sevenmile route. But the current version, which will start in the winter, reaches as far north as Strawberry Mansion, weaving throughout major urban districts, including University City and Center City West, eventually stretching all the way south to Grays Ferry, stretching a total of seven miles near the Schuylkill River. “It’s a brand new route, which is exciting for us,” SEPTA’s Chief Service Planning Officer Charles Webb told SPR following the hearing. “So, I’m thrilled we’re able to finally implement it, because, again, we’re very optimistic that’s it’s going to be a success.” Although there’ve been a few drafts, Route 49, which plans to run seven days a week, including a nearly 3,000 established ridership every weekday, retains its primary purpose – to provide easier access to the health, employment and transportation resources in University City. Before the route is officially finalized, SEPTA plans to conduct a oneyear trial beginning in February 2019, which the city has requested, according to Webb. “The experiment gives you a flexibility to make any changes you need to do within that year before it’s etched in stone at the end of the year,” Webb said. Through February 2020, SEPTA will analyze ridership, routing, technical operations and other essentials before crafting a lasting system. Final decisions about the fate of the route will be made at the end of the trial, as Webb says it’s possible Route 49 could be made permanent, receive changes or be discontinued altogether depending upon results of the experiment. While many factors will be evaluated, Webb says the chief measure of success is ridership. Experimentation will focus on the northern end of the route in Strawberry Mansion, as both the city and community members voiced concerns about the layover in that area, as Webb says the loop itself is constrained and requires construction. However, similar construction is not needed at the terminal point at the route’s southern end in Grays Ferry. During the initial run through of the route, there weren’t many changes noted that were necessary in that region, he says, particularly in terms of parking registration. “We wanna do this right … you want to make sure everything is done really nice and tidying up before we go in,” Webb said. For SEPTA, it was key to collaborate with the several communities that will be influenced by the bus, as, at May’s public hearing, residents voiced various concerns, including safety and environmental issues, about the 49 bus’ travel down their blocks. Residents specifically in the Grays Ferry area were worried that dilapidated streets riddled potholes and gravel would further be damaged by 30,000See ROUTE 49, page 10>>

SEPTA: New Route 49 gets the go-ahead

<<Continued from page 8 pound buses. Members of the public also noted the buses could cause increased air and sound pollution and present safety concerns for children and seniors. Webb says such concerns will be monitored during the experimental basis. However, during this week’s hearing, residents voiced generally positive opinions about the route, saying it would actually improve safety concerns. “I can’t focus enough on how dangerous these roads are to walk across,â€? said Grays Ferry Civic Association Vice President Kyle Shenandoah during the hearing. “And this bus route, I feel is the safest way in order for us to get from South Philadelphia to University City.â€? Shenandoah presented the SEPTA board with a petition, including more than 340 signatures from South Philly residents who were in favor of the route, arguing this was an accurate representation of the community. He mentioned that, currently, despite being able to see University City from Grays Ferry, it is not possible to get from one location to another without people either braving a walk over Grays Ferry Avenue Bridge or taking a bus to Center City followed by a train trip to West Philly. “I think this is a barrier for a lot of people who are looking for work,â€? Shenandoah said. “This is a barrier for people looking for health resources.â€? Webb stressed that SEPTA is sensitive to community concerns about the route, as both positive and negative conjectures about the route will be evaluated and considered during the experimental trial next year. “We don’t do a lot of new routes at SEPTA,â€? Webb said. “So, we want to make sure something like this, especially since we put all this work into it – the communities and the elected officials – that we have some flexibility, in case we start running it and something really isn’t working ‌ this enables you to really make the change.â€?

Walnut Street Theatre stages ‘Mamma Mia!’ By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

F

rom now until July 22, the Walnut Street Theatre is showcasing “Mamma Mia!,” a play that showcases the music of Swedish dance-pop group ABBA. The story follows 20-year-old Sophie’s quest to find her real father so he can walk her down the aisle at her wedding. Sophie looks through her mother’s old diary to find that she had intimate relations with three men. Thinking one of these men must be her father, she invites all three to the wedding in hopes that one of them will be revealed to be her father. The musical features some of ABBA’s biggest hits, such as “Souper Trouper,” “Lay All Your Love on Me” and “Dancing Queen.” “The talent on the stage is incredible,” said Billy D. Hart, who plays Eddie in the production. “People who may not know the performers here, Philly has a huge pool of local talent that is quite impressive.” Eddie is the best man and best friend of Sky, the groom who Sophie plans to marry. Eddie, Sky and Pepper are all close friends and are featured in various comedic mo-

ments throughout the play. Eddie is also in charge of Sky’s bachelor party. Mamma Mia marks Hart’s 11th show at the Walnut Street Theatre, and he has the unique distinction of being in every single musical at the Walnut since 2014. He’s been seen in tons of shows, including “Annie,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “South Pacific,” “Saturday Night Fever,” “High Society” and “Memphis.” “I love the music and getting to perform it eight or nine times a week,” Hart said of the performance. “There are some heavier shows like ‘Les Mis’ with dark undertones, but this show is exactly what it needs. It’s light and fun and makes you forget your troubles every time you’re here.” Hart lives in the 19148 ZIP code, and there are two other South Philadelphia natives involved with the play, including Kimberly Maxson, who plays in the ensemble, and the production’s Music and Vocal Director John Daniels. The performance runs for about 2 hours and 35 minutes and tickets range from $20 to $97. For more information, visit walnutstreettheatre.org.

Defense will have to hit the ground running this season

W

hen the Eagles report to the NovaCare Complex on July 25 for the start of their 2018 training camp, they’re going to be two weeks away from their first preseason game and a scant six weeks away from opening the NFL season against the Atlanta Falcons. That Sept. 6 date is circled as the Eagles begin defense of their Super Bowl championship. And the defense, one with significant changes from a season ago, is going to have very little time to do a lot of catching up before the Falcons come to town. It didn’t get any easier for coordinator Jim Schwartz’s group when the NFL announced last week that linebacker Nigel Bradham was suspended for that Atlanta game as punishment for

an off-the-field incident involving Bradham from the offseason prior to the 2016 campaign. It’s more than just a one-game suspension for Bradham that is concerning for the Eagles defense. Injuries to end Brandon Graham (ankle), tackle Tim Jernigan (back) and middle linebacker Jordan Hicks (Achilles tendon) kept them off the field the entire spring. Veteran tackle Haloti Ngata, signed in free agency, barely practiced in the spring. New end Michael Ben-

Dave

Spadaro

nett missed most of the spring until he showed for the team’s mandatory minicamp and Bennett has a lot to learn in the defense. Cornerback Sidney Jones, in his second year after taking the NFL’s version of a redshirt rookie season as he recovered from a pre-draft torn Achilles tendon, missed the latter part of the spring practices, including the mandatory minicamp, with lowerbody soreness. “We know that when we’re all together,” Graham said, “we’re gonna have something special. We added some veterans who know how to get after the quarterback. They know how to get it done. We’re going to have time to put the pieces in place. I’m not even worried about it.” While it’s true that many of the things that happen in the spring in the

NFL tend to vanish by late August, the Eagles have reason to be on guard with the defense. Losing Bradham for the opener takes off the field a physical, intelligent and playmaking linebacker who will be very difficult to replace. The defensive line, projected to be a strength of the defense, has those medical concerns throughout. Jones is expected to be a key contributor in the secondary and must show he can be durable. And what about Hicks? He has been hurt in two of his three NFL seasons, and the Eagles need him to anchor an already-thin corps at linebacker. Like, immediately. Against an Atlanta offense that has great balance and explosive playmakers and one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Matt Ryan. The test will be a considerable one,

made that much harder with the absence of Bradham. If you expect the defense to lead the way for the Eagles in 2018, understand just how much work has to be done to get that side of the ball squared away. Key players recovering from injuries is enough of an issue. Losing Bradham for a game was a stinger. In a very short period of time, the Eagles defense has to come together to prepare for an opening-game, “statement” kind of outing. If you thought this was all going to be easy, that the Eagles would waltz to a second Super Bowl, a quick peek at the state of the Eagles defense is a reminder of just how difficult repeating is in this league. The defense has so little time and so much to do to get to where it wants to be as the season opens.
