Ninth St., and the taste of sweet treats from Isgro Pasticceria, 1009 Christian St., accompanied about 60 other diverse food vendors, lunch trucks and area businesses June 27 for South Philly’s second Night Market. About 25,000 people braved the heat and came out for the food, arts and music bazaar — founded and hosted by The Food Trust that partnered with Bella Vista See NIGHT MARKET page 8

ith roasting temperatures making their typical summer onslaught, one could easily wish for winter’s biting digits. The Mummers Museum, 1100 S. Second St., meshed seasons June 28, hosting Go 4th & Learn About Mummers, the fourth of five interactive, pre-Indepen-
dence Day educational opportunities for youngsters. Nearly 400 children ventured to the 36-year-old Pennsport location as part of the 10-day Wawa Welcome America! festival, which culminated with last night’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway-situated Philly 4th of July Jam and Grand Finale Fireworks. Representing 10 camps and day cares, the youths escaped the heat to gather information on the costumed figures who have
led New Year’s Day celebrations since 1901. Though many see the Mummers as only one-day winter comforters, the City is hoping to promote them as a perpetual provider of pride. “We are looking to give people more knowledge and draw more attention to the museum,” representative Randy GiancaterSee GO 4TH & LEARN page 10

Playing the blame game To the Editor: What is to become of us — all of us — and every country in our sorry world? The unrest, the turmoil, confusion, disturbed state of conditions and unbelievable strife — who is to blame for it when there are so many to point the finger at? Can all of these people, who are the citizens of these countries and truly have no say or input on how to get out of what has been forced on them through absolutely no fault of their own, be blamed for these terrible conditions? The leaders, wearing flashy suits and highly educated by the finest colleges and schools, become wealthy and therefore completely ignorant of the real world and the lives of the countless people who trusted and depended on them. The outcome, of course, being the better and worse times of violent disagreements against the political establishments lead to their downfall. There are among us the common men who force wisdom and intelligence that no amount of education or wealth can instill. A shiny new suit and good vocabulary can never really hide what lurks inside the blow-hard demeanor, which has proven to be the hallmark and originates in the cause of the terrible turmoil they have put the world in. No country is exempt from this dreadful lack of leadership and skill, and we better start looking to the more intelligent and wiser, the commoners, to take control of the life only we can know about, and only we can correct and improve. Don’t ever forget “We the People, as we are the last hope and bastion that gives hope to all of humanity and our brothers throughout the failing, mean and hopeless world. We are loyal to our flag and the country it stands for, and not to do-nothing politicians who are only good at the lining of their pockets. They will never do what is right for mankind — only themselves, which is obvious to all.
They don’t even know us, yet they are willing to protect us. They may get benefits, but does it cover the cost of their lives? I don’t think so. When you see a police officer, give them a smile instead of a frown. Josephine Zirilli South Philadelphia

Show respect To the editor: I am sick and tired of people always putting our police officers down. True a few do stray. The majority are hard working people. They put their lives in danger every day.
DESTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Frank Rizzo Sr. vigorously fought crime in four years as police commissioner and eight as mayor, but this City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program tribute at Ninth and Montrose streets became a victim of wrongdoing over the weekend. olice responded to a “report of a person cooking a cat” Sunday. It was unclear at press time what sparked the pet mistreatment. At 10:15 a.m. on the 1800 block of Dickinson Street, the responding officer saw a charred cat hanging in the side yard while Alvair Desousa, 40, allegedly starred at him as he sat on the side steps of his home, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When the officer began walking toward Desousa, he is believed to have fled into a side garage door and secured it. Back-up officers arrived and tried to make contact with Desousa, who allegedly spoke to them through a closed front door, is believed to have relayed that he was a “diplomat” and a “sovereign nation,” Tolliver said. Police noticed the scent of gasoline and saw two young children at a second-floor window, and deemed Desousa a barricaded person at 11:09 a.m. Officers set up a perimeter while members from SWAT, Homeland Security and South Detective Division attempted to negotiate. Desousa allegedly conversed with authorities at his front window on a few occasions while holding his infant son. DeSousa surrendered to police at 5:13 p.m. The children were returned to their mother and a medic unit transported them to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for evaluation, Tolliver said. A search warrant did not recover any weapons, but detectives discovered gasoline and torch fuel poured throughout certain areas of the home, Tolliver said. SWAT, Bomb Squad and the Fire Department cleared the home; Animal Care & Control Team removed the feline from the yard; PECO and Philadelphia Gas Works disconnected services upon discovering alleged illegal hookups; and the Department of Human Services was contacted for a follow-up inquiry, Tolliver said. The Department of Licenses and Inspections inspected the property and planned to issue a stop work order for construction projects that are lacking proper permits and are in violation of the building code. Desousa was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person, as well as a count of arson, causing catastrophe and possession of an instrument
of crime, according to court records. His bail, which he had not posted as of press time, was set at $300,000 Monday. Desousa, whose address is listed as Houston, Texas in court records, was convicted in Philly for 1997 murder and possession of an instrument of crime charges, according to court records.
Seeking suspect Police have identified the man allegedly responsible for stabbing a man to death inside a Lower Moyamensing bar last week. Omar Wright, 31, whose last known address is on the 500 block of Cantrell Street, is wanted for allegedly killing George J. Fox, 44, of the 1400 block of South Eighth Street, at 1:14 a.m. June 24 Omar Wright while he was bartending at T Barr’s Bar, 2201 S. Eighth St. Wright allegedly entered the bar, struck Fox in the head, stabbed him and swiped $600 from the register, bar owner Thomas Barr said last week. Fox suffered stab wounds to his arm and chest and was pronounced dead at 1:25 a.m. at the scene, according to police. The City offers a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of homicide offenders. The bar has added $1,000 to that total. Pickup setup A cabbie was setup and then dragged into a Point Breeze home and robbed Saturday. Two women hailed a cab at 3:30 a.m. at Ninth Street and Washington Avenue asking to be transported to 21st and Latona streets, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Upon pulling onto the 2100 block of Latona, one of the females said, “I have to go inside the house and get some money from my mom,” as both exited the taxi and went inside, Tolliver said. The pair came out a few minutes later and one woman said, “Our mom doesn’t believe we were

Police Report picked up in a taxi cab. Could you come inside and tell her?” However, the 41-yearold cabbie instructed them to have her come outside. Instead, a man ran outside, opened the driver’s side door and dragged the cab’s occupant from the car and into the house, Tolliver said. The man, along with the two female passengers and another man, started to punch and kick him. One smacked him with a large unknown object on the back of his head and one of the women said, “Get his money and find his keys.” The offenders stole $75 before fleeing the home in an unknown direction. The cab driver stumbled out of the dwelling, drove his taxi to 21st Street and contacted his dispatcher, Tolliver said. Police officers transported the victim to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment of a deep cut to the back of his head and several other lacerations, Tolliver said. One of the women was described as black or Latino with a light complexion, age 20 to 22, skinny and having long hair while the other was described as black with a light complexion, heavy set and having short hair. The man that dragged the cabbie was described as black, age 18 to 25 and 5-foot-2. A description of the fourth offender was not available at press time. Two thieves were caught in a woman’s Marconi home after she called the police. A 49-year-old woman was asleep on the couch inside her home on the 1700 block of South 17th Street when a noise woke her up at 4:50 a.m. Sunday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. She saw her first-floor bathroom window open and two unknown intruders, so she ran out of the abode and called 911. Police surrounded the house and allegedly saw Rasheed Johnson, 20, of the 2000 block of Croskey Street, hiding under the kitchen table, Tolliver said. Officers ordered him outside and arrested him while a juvenile jumped out of the open window and attempted to escape. Police apprehended him as well after a brief pursuit. From Johnson, police are believed to have recovered two cell phones and two credit cards under a 51-year-old man’s name, Tolliver said. An investigation led detectives to learn the man resided at a home on an undisclosed block of Winton Street that Johnson allegedly entered overnight through a front basement window. Stolen items included a wallet that contained credit cards and an ID, as well as a cell phone and a watch. The juvenile was charged with burglary criminal trespassing and related offenses while Johnson was charged with two counts of the former charges, as well as a count of conspiracy of burglary and related charges, according to court documents. Johnson’s bail was set at $10,000 Sunday. His arrest violated his probation as he pled guilty and was sentenced to six to 23 months of jail plus three years of probation for a 2010 burglary, according SELL to court records. SELL

A man was mugged after returning to Hawthorne from SugarHouse Casino. Shortly after a 46-year-old exited a taxi on the 1300 block of Bainbridge Street at 4:10 p.m. June 28, two men pushed him to the ground from behind, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. One of the offenders grabbed his throat and said, “If you move, I will shoot you” as the other man pulled his glasses off of his face, took $310 from his hand

A man wearing a wig and fake beard robbed a Whitman bank and one of its customers last week. The offender walked into Wells Fargo, 2710 S. Third St., and snatched $4,000 from a 45-year-old patron at 12:40 p.m. June 28, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division Surveillance video said. When he tried to retrieve his cash, the unknown male pointed a small, semi-automatic pistol at his neck and approached a 22-year-old teller, pointed a gun at her and said, “Give me all the money. No dye packs.” The man fled the establishment with an undetermined amount of cash, headed north across Oregon Avenue to an alley on the 2600 block of South Third Street, entered a white or cream-colored auto at Third and Shunk streets and traveled west on Shunk, Tolliver said. The man was described as white, age 25 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-6, heavyset and wearing a gray T-shirt, white painter-style pants,

NIGHT MARKET continued from page 1 United Civic Association and The South Ninth Street Italian Market — which stretched from Eighth to 11th streets along Washington Avenue and ran on Ninth Street from Ellsworth to Christian streets. “There’s obviously a very rich food history here at the Italian Market, and it’s wonderful to highlight and show how that rich history is still going on and it’s very, very modern and very at-the-moment,” The Food Trust’s Executive Director Yael Lehmann, of 10th and Carpenter streets, said. Mike Fager came from New Jersey to attend the event that he saw advertised on Facebook. “There’s a lot of different stuff,” he said, as he snacked on margherita pizza from Nomad Pizza, 611 S. Seventh St. From Mexican specialties to Asian delights to Caribbean soul food and Italian treats, the Night Market celebration was a mouthwatering — and affordable — success determined by the smiles on everyone’s faces, all enjoying locally grown goodies, including beers, wines and more, from almost every participating vendor. “There’s probably new things that people didn’t realize, so it’s nice to bring people out and reintroduce the neighborhood to people,” Lehmann, who also performed at the event with her band Happy Accident, said. On Ninth Street, at least 16 local businesses, one of the busiest being Esposito’s Meats with its classic Italian pig roast, were showcased. Jules Esposito from Esposito’s Porchetta, 1627 S. 10th St., cooked the roast pork for both his stand on Washington Avenue and his cousin’s on Ninth Street. “I thought it was pretty successful, it seemed like a really nice crowd,” Alexis Albater, an Esposito’s Meats worker and resident of 11th Street and Snyder Avenue, said after the event. THROUGHOUT THE FOOD Trust’s 20 years of existence, its mission has been to provide affordable, healthy food to everyone, especially in impoverished areas. One of the ways the nonprofit has done that is through its 26 farmers markets around the city, including local destinations in Grays Ferry, Lower Moyamensing and Point Breeze. From the realization of how great a community revolves around a farmers market, Night Market formed in the fall of 2010 — with its first debut of 17 vendors on East Passyunk Avenue at the Singing Fountain — as a “next-generation farmers market,” White said. Aside from the pilot Night Market, there have been four other prior markets — in University City, Mount Airy, Chinatown and Northern Liberties. Gus Isgro, the owner of the Bella Vista-
Night Market patrons enjoyed an evening of mingling with friends while sampling drinks and bites from about 60 participating vendors at last week’s gathering. P h o t o b y K at h r y n P o o l e
based bakery, tracked what Night Market was doing and said he was “blown away” by the May event in Northern Liberties, which had 45 vendors and about 20,000 attendees. Excited to get involved, Isgro applied to participate at the Washington Avenue Night Market. To prepare for the warm, busy night, he made freshly baked cupcakes and sfogliatellas and packed the cannoli fillings inside plastic containers with ice until needed. “We stocked up on a lot of items that are durable, that don’t need heavy refrigeration,” he said. Anticipating a large turnout, Isgro had more sweet treats ready about a block away. “I’ve got four boys running back and fourth to the warehouse,” he said.
The Night Market provides an outlet for Philadelphia restaurants, vendors and more, while getting people engaged and excited about the celebration of food, White said. “[South Philly] is such a cool food scene,” White said. “To me, this is an exciting place to be for food in Philly, and for me that was a big part of the reason I wanted to bring people down here.” Regan Cooper from Eighth and Wharton streets attended the Washington Avenue event with her neighbor Holly Keefe — both previous Night Market attendees. “I think this one is much better in that it’s on a much wider street, so I think it will be better to accommodate for the herds of people that show up,” Cooper said. “... I love that they do these events. I think that it’s a really great way to get people out in the summer.”
Who’s making a difference
T
he third annual Difference Makers issue will be hitting doorsteps this fall. Just like the last two years, the South Philly Review is seeking nominations from its loyal readers. Who are the Difference Makers in your community? Who are the people who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist others? Here is your chance to tell us their stories. They can be teachers, volunteers, coaches, doctors or any other profession. All entries will be reviewed by our selection committee, with the best ones being profiled in our very special Oct. 11 Fall Guide. Those who were
selected previously are not eligible. In 250 words or fewer, tell us the story of your worthy candidate who resides or works in South Philadelphia and send it our way via e-mail, fax or regular mail. Photos are not required. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 27. SPR

Cooper and Keefe spent most of their time before the sun went down staying cool inside the Night Market’s first full-on VIP tent experience, which was sponsored by ?uest Loves Food and Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corp. The tent exhibited local art from With Art Philadelphia; Philadelphia Distilling cocktails designed by Farmers’ Cabinet mixologists; beer from Yards Brewing Co.; wine from Penns Wood Winery; and Love’s Drumsticks, ?uestfucious Cupcakes and music curated by ?uestlove, the Philly native and The Roots drummer. The pop-up tent tickets sold out at $55 a head, and all proceeds went to The Food Trust and future Night Market celebrations. “The idea behind the tent is that we want Night Market to be sustainable. We want to be able to do this for as long as people are excited about it,” White said. “It’s one small fundraising effort to give people something cool and different, and to help support the program.” About 70 people involved in The Food Trust and other organizations around Philadelphia helped from set-up until cleanup by passing out maps, giving directions, keeping the area clean and much more. Volunteers counted nearly 5,000 more attendees than the Northern Liberties Night Market, making this event’s turnout the highest thus far, White said. The people attending the celebration were considered just as diverse as the food options. “South Philly has a great mix of people,” Lehmann said. “It’s really fun at Night Market to see the reflection of that, all the different people out.” Every neighborhood brings a different, organic experience, White said. “It really felt like South Philly,” she said. GO 4TH & LEARN continued from page 1
POLICE REPORT continued from page 7
City spokesman, said, citing the day and “Fancy Folks: Art and Mummery,” a December-through-February City Hall photo exhibit, as the biggest contributors to the local government’s advocacy. The two-hour affair, which complemented the 12-year-old Go 4th & Learn series’ talks on animals, fitness, history and imagination, began with The Hardly Ables Retiree String Band, which played standards such as “Alabama Jubilee” and “When You’re Smiling” as the enthusiasts found seats. Once the group had finished its opening tunes and a Free Library of Philadelphia representative had ended a discussion of her employer’s Summer Reading program, Ed Kirlin took the stage. “I’m going to need your participation,” the resident of the 200 block of Morris Street said as he opened “The Littlest Mummer: A Philadelphia Story,” his 2006 how-to manual for those eager to perfect the Mummers’ strut. A 54-year Mummer, Kirlin belongs to Froggy Carr Comics, 1429 S. Second St., and yearned to combine decades of dancing with his writing pursuits, which include screenplays, short stories and historical pieces for the Franklin Institute and the Independence Seaport Museum. With signed copies featuring the inscription “Now you know how; pass it on!,” his listeners offered rapt attention to hear the tale of first-time Mummers Parade attendee Maxie, who vows not to be too little to enjoy the outing. The boy, whom Kirlin named as a sign of gratitude to Max Raab, a producer whose work includes ’01’s Mummers documentary “STRUT!” comes to accept his diminutive form while attending the Broad Street spectacle. After a fun time with his mother and brother Steve, he falls asleep and dreams of meeting three Mummers. The first, Flapping Jack, encourages him to believe that “Every day is a holiday, but New Year’s Day is a very, very special holiday if you are a Mummer.” Kirlin instructed the audience to flap like Maxie after the latter received Jack’s tutelage, with the museum coming to resemble a mini flock of birds. Meeting with Spin-Ya Virginia and Russell also teach Maxie to spin and shuffle and earn him the title “The Littlest Mummer.” Donning gold shoes, he caps the story by heeding their advice to “Flap and spin, shuffle and grin.” Kirlin, who pledges proceeds from sales to the Katie Kirlin Fund, named in honor of his niece, who, at only 12, lost her two-year battle against spinal cancer in 1989, received help from another Mummer in detailing Maxie’s moves. Four-year-old Daniel Fundora, who, as Captain Jack, claimed first place juvenile distinction in this year’s parade, reprised his “Pirates of the Caribbean” role to ex-
and snatched a watch and keys from his pockets. They demanded he remove his shoes and walk down a driveway as they fled in an unknown direction. Police did not release a detailed description of the perpetrators as of press time. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

ecute steps for Kirlin. A member of the Hog Island Fancy Brigade, 2116 S. Third St., the Drexel Hill youngster beamed as he mimicked Maxie. “A friend of mine helped him to get this chance,” grandfather Bill Harpin, of the Broomall-based Ferko String Band, said of Daniel, who enjoyed his time as a replica of his fictional contemporary. “Maxie likes dancing and so do I,” the child said. Kirlin fraternized with Daniel and the other participants to gain a sense of their appreciation for his work’s tenet that heart, not stature, makes a Mummer. “It is so rewarding to see interest in what for me has been a major part of my identity,” the Pennsporter said of Go 4th & Learn’s initial creation of a Mummers event. “Today is a great example of what the museum can do to expand interest in the Mummers.” AFTER KIRLIN’S READING, organizers divided the participants into two groups that alternated completing arts and crafts pieces and touring the museum, which opened in ’76 as a tribute to the New Year’s Day revelers. Through art classes, concert luncheons and lectures on the origins of mummery, the site strives to acknowledge the past while motivating new generations of crusaders. Honoring their predecessors, the children commended one another as they created Mummers masks. Salt shakers filled with glitter let them honor the parade’s penchant for vibrant colors, with their imaginations handling the rest. Though Kirlin, who deemed himself “an amateur historian” has cloaked himself in Mummers raiment for more than five decades, he approached his tour as an awestruck
newcomer to the pageantry. His younger companions shared his sentiment as they headed upstairs to inspect the garb, read walls lined with text on the history of various groups and follow the feet of Annette Granato, whose family consists of three generations of Mummers. The resident of Bellmawr, N.J., and a member of the Clevemore Fancy Brigade, 2119 S. 10th St., bedecked herself in a costume to dress the part of an accomplished strutter. “Now you’re all Mummers,” the former inhabitant of 20th Street and Snyder Avenue said after some clever limb manipulation. After instructing her would-be peers, she watched as they continued to practice imitating the winter well-wishers. “I enjoyed the parade as a child, but it’s more fun being directly involved,” Granato said of participating. “Being a performer helps the vibes to stick with you.” Olivia Andy McFadden might follow Granato in the limelight. The 4-year-old Center City resident joined Kirlin and Daniel for “The Littlest Mummer” reading and took in her surroundings with immense joy, especially when gazing at the wardrobe. “I want to be a Mummer,” she said of the inspirational aspect of the day. “The dancing is exciting.” Kirlin, whose interest likewise began when he was a child, claimed bias but added the Mummers promote a sense of carefree abandon. “The Mummers help us to forget our troubles,” he said. “It’s like the song says, ‘When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.’” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext 124. A Point Breeze/Newbold man, who held a woman at knifepoint in a Passyunk Square mugging Monday, was apprehended. The 22-year-old woman was walking down the 1400 block of South Watts Street at 1:35 a.m. when Belarmino Cruz aka Emillo Sarro, 30, of the 1200 block of South 15th Street, grabbed her neck and said, “Give me what you got,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When she claimed she had nothing to give, he allegedly placed a large knife to her neck, so she handed over $175 from her pocket. He also is believed to have snatched a gold necklace with a cross medallion that she was wearing. The woman sprinted to Broad Street as she dialed 911. Police located Cruz across the street on the 1400 block of South Broad, Tolliver said. The knife, cash and the necklace minus the cross were recovered and her belongings were returned. Cruz was charged with robbery, aggravated and simple assaults, terroristic threats and related charges, according to court records. His bail was set at $50,000 Monday. A new mother and professional scientist from East Passyunk Crossing gears up to bring traditional Indian dance styles to the Fringe Festival. By Jess Fuerst

agore is really revered in the East and he has a Western following, but the average Westerner doesn’t know of him as they do other artists. He was the first non-Westerner to win a Nobel Prize, in 1913 — at the turn of the century was when he was really prolific,” Bidisha Dasgupta, of 11th and Emily streets, said. “He is to the East what Shakespeare is to the West. He’s really, really big.” The poet Rabindranath Tagore is an inspiration to Dasgupta, who is a performer of traditional Indian dances, most prominently trained in Bharatanatyam. For the upcoming 2012 Fringe Festival, Dasgupta is drawing inspiration from Tagore and a Western icon to present Indian dance to the Philadelphia audience with her show, “Einstein/Tagore: Seashore of Endless Worlds.” “The first time Tagore and Einstein met was in 1926 in Berlin. They were introduced by a common friend who thought, ‘You are the big thinkers of our time. You should meet,’” Dasgupta said. “I’m also a scientist and [their conversation] was something that really triggered my interest in the scientific view of humanity and how does religion and human consciousness tie-in to the world around us. “The transcripts of their conversations from the 1920s to ’30s are really well recorded and it was the inspiration for the piec-

I didn’t want the first iteration being in a big, black box theater setup. I wanted something more intimate,” the 34-year-old, who hopes to move the show to larger audiences after the Fringe, said. “I really like this gallery’s vision, as well. Their art and philosophy really spoke to me. They mainly have Southeast Asian art, but they are into connecting to other cultures, so I approached them and asked if they would be willing to be the venue for show.” The gallery agreed, and Dasgupta is putting her full effort behind producing the event — her first self-produced showcase of original works — and hoping to bring awareness to philosophical questions Tagore and Einstein explored. “What I want people to take away is the idea of breaking down cross-cultural barriers to see that language and music and art go across the stereotypes we have, to find the community of humanity that exists,” she said. “This is what came out of
their conversations.” IN THE SUBURBS of Boston, Mass., Dasgupta always felt the pull of the arts. “My mom always says I learned to dance before I learned to walk,” Dasgupta said. “I took to it naturally; I wanted to be in it.” Dasgupta was enrolled at Nrityanjali School of Dance, with the teacher Jothi Raghavan, and she took immediately to the elements of the ancient style. “It’s primarily a solo art form. People who are professional dancers perform it usually in concerts of pieces that are very technical and ones that really tell a story,” Dasgupta said. “There are a lot of poses and rhythmic footwork and there is a big storytelling component to the art form, so the performer may act out the words to the song.” Though she excelled at dance, Dasgupta harbored a love of academia and sciences that led her to graduate in 1999 with a bachelor’s in biology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. “[At Case Western,] I did a lot of folk dance and I was very active with the ballroom dance team. I was exposed to a lot of other different dance styles,” she said. Upon graduation Dasgupta moved to New York City to complete a Ph.D. in immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College. In the decade she spent completing her stud-
ies and beginning a professional career, she also saw the growth of her dance résumé. “During that time I was involved with a lot of dance in New York as well. One of the highlights was a company called eyeBLINK. I was their dance director for two years,” she said. “It was a multidisciplinary and multicultural group. Indian dance was a big part of the company, but we worked to find a common language between different cultural art forms.” A job at a large pharmaceutical company offered Dasgupta the chance to move south to Philadelphia in 2008. She and husband Jeffrey Stanley — who is also an artist — were wary of what they would find. “When I came here, it was a big transition for me. I was apprehensive and I knew nothing. We were wondering, ‘What is the art scene?’” she said. “My husband and I were thrilled, and found it more engaging and we were liking it here more than New York. “It’s very diverse and it’s really not pretentious. There is a lot of really experimental art and it’s very appreciated. I love the fact that — at a lot of places I performed in New York, you get the same demographic that comes to all your shows … But here there is a really diverse audience of people with families or with some person who found out about it from a neighbor through word-of-mouth.”
Balancing her professional and artistic lives, she realized a move from her and Stanley’s Art Museum area apartment was necessary when the couple got news that they were expecting a son. “We came to it with an open mind and of all the places we looked at, the family and community feeling we got in South Philly was the strongest. We liked that it was diverse in age and multicultural,” Dasgupta, who gave birth to Ishan in March 2011, said. “We love food. It’s a good food destination.” Settled into their place for about a year, the family is gearing up for Dasgupta’s return to the stage, as she took a hiatus from performing during the pregnancy. With Stanley as her “right-hand man” putting together the performance, she is excited to showcase the traditional dance styles and expand the artistic community she recently joined. “I hope a lot of proponents of Indian dance come to see a traditional art form they are familiar with being performed in a new light,” Dasgupta said. “And then I hope people who are completely unfamiliar get exposed to the poetry and music of Tagore, who is not as well-known to Westerners.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

The origin of fireworks
J
uly Fourth is the day in America where, in honor of our independence from Britain, men burn hot dogs beyond recognition on the grill and wear silly chef hats and aprons. There are a great many reasons to be happy about being freed from the shackles of the Brits — warm beer, greasy bangers, Prince Charles and poor dental work. We understandably celebrate these bountiful gifts by exploding and scaring the hell out of our pets. Your columnist believes that it is high time we learn about the origin of fireworks. Contrary to popular belief, fireworks are not a diabolical scheme by the Phillies to disturb the sleep of folks living near the sports complex. I hasten to add if the Chinese had not invented fireworks, the Phillies would have invented them to get back at the people who opposed their building a new stadium. Love them or hate them, fireworks were invented around the 10th century in China when a wok exploded and showered Emperor Song with half-cooked vegetables. By the way, Emperor Song’s wife was a noted composer who wrote the lyrics and melody to “Without a Song” after he divorced her. It wasn’t until 1777 that fireworks came into use in America. Prior to that time, America was a relatively quiet place where the only exceptions were the occasional musket fire and a Puritan child practicing the saxophone. The first fireworks were not the incredibly beautiful displays we see today at public events. It is believed George Washington developed a firecracker that became the forerunner to the “cherry bomb.” Contrary to popular folklore, Washington did not chop down a cherry tree when he was a small boy. In fact, Washington was 45 when he blew up (not chopped down) a persimmon (not cherry) tree with the first cherry bomb seen in the colonies. He lied about the incident, claiming that the tree had been struck by lightning. This singular event did not prevent Washington from running for president on the slogan “I cannot tell a lie,” which was, in fact, a lie itself. The firecracker evolved into beautiful fireworks displays in the years to come, except around the schoolyard near my home where historically minded kids still celebrate the Fourth of July (and Washington’s birthday) by exploding cherry bombs under tin cans. It is the least they can do in memory of our first president.
Today there are popular fireworks displays all over our land, many of which are accompanied by the music of John Philip Sousa. Your columnist is a particularly devoted fan of Sousa. While other guys got their girlfriends in the mood for love with Sinatra and Mathis, I played “Stars and Stripes Forever” by Sousa and got incredibly lucky with drum majorettes. A little known fact is that each individual part of a fireworks display has a name. For instance, the crescent is so named because it forms a crescent of red, white and blue when it explodes into the air. I have listed some of today’s more popular fireworks below. The Romney: Forms a dog strapped to the roof of a family station wagon. The Obama: Attempts to trail colorful sparks across the sky and then goes only halfway. The Charlie Sheen: A bright blue flare that lights up the sky and then self-destructs. The Lindsay Lohan: A bright pink flare lights up the sky and then self-destructs. Natural Gas: Looks good for a while and then winds up polluting your whole fracking water supply. The Phillies: A red-and-white explosion that falls apart around the eighth inning. The Harrisburg: Get your money back. This one doesn’t work. The Afghanistan: Very expensive. Hangs in the sky for 10 years and fades away. College Kids: Forms the outline of a teen, adds nose ring and tattoo and spells out “Send money.” Breastaurants: Forms a restaurant with skimpily clad waitresses and no menus. The Larry Mendte: Looks like conventional fireworks, but suddenly it hacks into your e-mail. The Chris Christie: You shoot it into the sky and it forms the words, “You gotta problem?” The Arizona: Nice colors, but it asks for your papers. The John Travolta: Instead of exploding in the sky, it hides in the closet. The Chase Utley: Raises hopes and then lands on the disabled list. The Property Tax: Fireworks that keep going straight up. Middle-Class Wages: Only goes straight down. College Education: This fireworks goes farther out of reach every time it is fired. The Tom Corbett: Practically invisible. The Ann Curry: About to be paid $10 million to disappear. The Fast And Furious: Turns from a picture of Vin Diesel into Eric Holder. The Beach: You take one look at this flare and it reminds you of where you would rather be. SPR Comment at www.southphillyreview.com/opinion/cardella.

Newlywed Antonio (Alessandro Tiberi), from left, and Uncle Paolo (Roberto Della Casa) run into Anna the prostitute (Penélope Cruz) in Woody Allen’s newest film, “To Rome With Love.”
By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer
S
hort of the second coming of “Annie Hall,” no Woody Allen film was going to get a fair shake following “Midnight in Paris,” an ultra-lovable dream of a comedy and the prolific director’s most financially fruitful effort. So it’s no surprise that “To Rome With Love,” yet another Allen Euro-trip, feels a tad minor for its maker, as early reviews have reported. Its jokes don’t always land, its characters don’t always pop and its stance as a love letter to a city feels redundant, as if Allen is throwing darts at a map before rinsing and repeating. But in looking at the broader movie landscape, which, this year, has been less than aweinspiring, it’s hard to not be impressed and tickled by Allen’s latest, a reassurance that even when he’s not on his A-game, he outplays most other storytellers in the biz. “Rome” consists of four plotlines, which thankfully don’t connect in any manipulative manner. On screen for the first time in six years, Allen plays a retired opera director whose visit to the title locale prompts him to ignite the career of an unlikely tenor (Fabio Armiliato). Elsewhere in the film, a budding architect (Jesse Eisenberg) woos an actress (Ellen Page) under the watchful eye of a sentimental mentor (Alec Bladwin); an awkward everyman (Roberto Benigni) acquires inexplicable overnight fame; and a young, out-of-town couple (Alessandra Mastronardi and Alessandro Tiberi) sees their relationship tested, thanks to her movie-star adoration and his run-in with a saucy prostitute (Penélope Cruz). Peppered with Allen’s usual cultural witticisms and neurotic self-deprecation, this alternately dexterous and lazy tour-bus ride offers big laughs and little disappoint-
ments, like lowbrow hooker gags well beneath the auteur’s capabilities. And while it purports to be a film about love, sex and Rome (the dizzying navigation of which is deftly skewered), it’s really Allen’s blithe commentary on celebrity, inspired, in no small part, by the city’s birth of the paparazzi. Without preaching or grasping for faux profundity, Allen uses the fluctuation of notoriety as his film’s connective tissue, weaving together the yarns he continues to spin so well.

Recommended Rental Margaret R Available Tuesday One of the best films of 2011, and one whose under-the-radar studio snubbing led to a wave of critical support, Kenneth Lonergan’s “Margaret,” a New York saga years in the making, is an uncannily wellwritten and gorgeously acted drama, unfolding in a wild way that’s brilliant even in its faults. Anna Paquin is fantastic as a spoiled high-schooler whose world comes undone when she witnesses manslaughter firsthand, sparking a stunning ripple effect. Consider this essential viewing. Create a delightful display by placing the dip in a bowl centered on a platter and add some color by surrounding it with blue corn tortilla chips instead of traditional ones. Spiga By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r
S
everal weeks ago, Edward and I received a call from the Obama Center City campaign office. The young man asked us if we intend to vote for the president in November. We ended up chatting for about 30 minutes. I wanted to volunteer. Scott came to our home for dinner about a week later and we spent three hours talking about everything from politics to the media. Several weeks later, Sandy and I dropped by the Obama office where Scott introduced us to his boss Peter. A chat ensued and I realized these two young men would be fine dining companions on restaurant reviews. I enjoyed their company and conversation. We decided to try Spiga, a new casual Italian restaurant on Locust Street where Girasole served up some fine fare. I settled into a comfortable black leather banquette and ordered a Rob Roy ($12). Peter, comes from an interesting family. He is Norwegian and Swedish. A relative on his grandmother’s side was a French Huguenot who sailed with William Penn on the Welcome. “I have relatives buried in Christ’s Church Burial Ground,” Peter said. We liked the simplicity of Spiga’s menu. Appetizers, salads, pizzas, pastas, small plates and entrées are straightforward with something for everyone. We began dinner with the charcuterie plate of the day ($12). It consisted of three slices of Prosciutto di Parma, salume and spicy sopressata, a handful of top-quality M a rc o n i / Pa c ke r Pa r k

olives, a few slices of sundried tomato and a dollop of slightly sweet onion jam. Our server brought us a small metal pail with slices of Italian bread. I asked for some olive oil and butter because the antipasto needed a drizzle to bring out the flavors. Although Peter and I enjoyed this course, I thought it too pricey for a handful of items. Some cheese or pate would have filled out the course nicely. Peter earned a degree in political science at the University of California and intends to study law at Berkeley in a year or so. Although he is a California boy, he loves the East Coast, even the blizzards. Next up was a Spiga salad of the day ($12). It was baby arugula with Jersey blueberries and shards of ParmigiannoReggiano. We served ourselves and discovered the salad was limp and way overdressed. It also could have used some crunch although the tart blueberries were winners with me. When someone new joins me on reviews, I am happy as a lark when I discover he or she is not a picky eater. “I am not allergic to anything and I like almost everything,” Peter said as we perused the pizza list. Both of us gave high marks to the simple thin-crust pie, which was topped with spinach, yellow heirloom tomatoes, dreamy creamy mozzarella and a hint of fresh homemade tomato sauce. “I like when ingredients speak for themselves,” I said as I placed another slice on

my plate. Some pasta was in order and Peter told me he loves gnocchi. At Spiga, the gnocchi ($15) are prepared in my favorite manner. Once the light pillows of potato dough are boiled and drained they are mixed with brown butter, fresh sage leaves and crisp Prosciutto di Parma with a dusting of Parmigianno-Reggiano. “They could be hotter,” I said. “But they are not tough and gummy.” Spiga is my kind of place. The menu is small yet diverse and portions are goodsized. Service was a little spotty — used

Many try to hide their passionate feelings for ice cream due to the high calorie count, but in the end, some nd spoonfuls of this frozen treat simply irresistible. By Phyllis Stein-Novack Food Columnist
I
have a confession to make: For many years, I have been deeply involved in a Ménage à trois with Ben and Jerry. Edward does not know about it. I have become adept about hiding my pints of Ben and Jerry’s way in the back of the freezer, under bags of imported French green beans, Spread Bagelry bagels and Trader Joe’s chicken pot pies. My life-long love affair with ice cream began in the womb. I’m not kidding about this. My mother adored chocolate ice cream. I love ice cream so much that I can eat it, straight out of the pint, standing barefoot outside clad in a cotton nightgown during a blizzard. July is National Ice Cream Month. Heck, for me, it’s every month. My preferences are the aforesaid gentlemen from Vermont, Bassetts, Breyers and Trader Joe’s. I don’t like weird flavors or that Cold Stone Creamery garbage where clerks mash ice cream with candy and God knows what. Coffee is my favorite flavor. Coffee chip and coffee Heath Bar Crunch also are up there. So is Bassetts French vanilla and butterscotch. Chocolate recently replaced vanilla as the flavorof-choice for Americans. I often buy a half-gallon of Breyers’ vanilla, chocolate and strawberry because there’s
something for everyone. I dream of hot fudge sundaes with my own hot fudge sauce. I have been known to whip some up around midnight. Banana splits are too big for me, but Edward has been known to woof one down after a delicious dinner. I always associate summer with ice cream, sodas and root beer floats. Hires originated in Philadelphia and it is the brand I buy. Ice cream has its own special dishes. During Royal Ascot Week, Queen Elizabeth II always serves mint chocolate chip to her guests nestled in pink glass footed bowls that belonged to Queen Victoria. I do not own sundae glasses but I think
I will treat myself and buy some soon. Former Gov. Ed Rendell said he lost weight a number of years ago when he limited himself to only one bowl of ice cream at night instead of two. Sound advice.
■ Snow Balls ■ Ingredients:
Ice cream of choice, 1 large scoop per person 1 cup of flaked coconut, toasted in a dry skillet over low heat until it turns golden. Topping of choice such as hot fudge, chocolate syrup or caramel Slivered almonds Whipped cream
Directions: If possible, place 1 large scoop in four serving glasses. Place them in the freezer. When ready to serve, top with the toasted coconut, sauce of choice, almonds and whipped cream. Serves four.
■ My Hot Fudge Sauce ■ Ingredients:
1/2 cup of sugar 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa 2/3 cup of half-
and-half 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract, optional
Directions: Combine the sugar and cocoa in a medium saucepan. Blend in the half-andhalf and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil. Stir for one minute. Remove from the heat and add the butter and vanilla, if using. Blend until smooth and serve warm over ice cream. Makes two cups.
■ The Make-it-Yourself ■ Sundae Bar Ingredients:
Several half-gallons ice cream of choice 2 cups of strawberries, sliced 2 cups of blueberries 2 cups of melon cubes 2 cups of wet walnuts Chocolate syrup Hot fudge sauce Caramel sauce 1 bottle of green Crème de Menthe 1 bottle of Nocello Whipped cream
Directions: Set a table with chilled bowls and spoons. Place each of the ingredient in a pretty serving bowl. Allow guests to build their own sundaes. If you have parfait glasses, now is the time to bring them out. I love an oldfashioned Crème de Menthe parfait and a number of years ago discovered that Nocello, an Italian liqueur made from walnuts, makes a delicious topping for ice cream. I will never forget that day, 5 years ago when you were taken away. I often wonder how life would be, If you were still here with me. I miss you so much, there’s still a void in my heart. I just wish we could have lived our lives not ever having to be apart. Now all I have are memories, that I will forever treasure in my heart.

ing to the Boston Celtics with the 22nd and 51st picks, respectively, the night was not perfect for the institution. Point guard Antonio “Scoop” Jardine, a graduate of Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., went undrafted. The 6-foot-2 floor general broke his right foot June 22 while trying out for the Utah Jazz and had surgery June 26. He could still land a spot in the league via a free-agent contract. That route to the world of thundering arenas and adoring fans could apply to Temple University graduate Ramone Moore, too. A Southern alumnus, the guard had picked up second-round interest but was not among the 60 selected athletes. The Sixers nabbed St. John’s University forward Maurice Harkless with the 15th pick and acquired Mississippi State University forward Arnett Moultrie from the Heat. couple seasons removed from superstar LeBron James’ departure for the Miami Heat, which relegated them to the NBA’s also-ran category, the Cleveland Cavaliers excited fans at June 28’s draft, taking Dion Waiters with the fourth overall pick. The 19th-and-Carpenster-streets native, a two-year matriculator at New York-based Syracuse University, will hoist jump shots for the Ohio franchise, whose 21-45 record placed it 13th in the 15-team Eastern Conference. As forecasters had predicted, the New Orleans Hornets selected University of Kentucky forward Anthony Davis first, but the remaining 13 lottery choices included a few surprises. Many mock boards had Waiters, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard who briefly attended South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., going anywhere from eighth to 14th, yet Cleveland gave the 20-year-old an early meeting with commissioner David Stern at Newark, N.J.’s Prudential Center. Having not worked out for any squad, he left matters to agent Rob Pelinka. “I just tried to stay as stress-free as I could,” Waiters said of pre-draft vibes at last week’s introductory press conference. “I’m blessed to be in this situation, and I can’t wait to get to Cleveland.” When he hits the floor at Quicken Loans Arena, he will hope to incite an instant turnaround for the Cavaliers, who feature Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving, already a close friend to Waiters. “I’m excited to play alongside my brother,” the Big East Conference’s Sixth Man of the Year said. “I’ve known him for six or seven years, and we have been texting and talking forever. He was the first person that greeted me off the stage and gave me a big hug and told me ‘Welcome to Cleveland.’ That meant a lot to me.” In its post-draft analysis, nba.com noted that Waiters “gives the Cavs a needed dynamic scorer.” The Central Divisioners struggled mightily this year, finishing 29 games behind the Chicago Bulls and 25th in scoring among the association’s 30 units at 93 points per game and 26th in points allowed at 100.2. While a member of the Orange, Waiters often displayed amazing
offensive skills, while striving to improve his talents as a ball hound. As coach Jim Boeheim’s chief reserve, he had his patience rewarded, amassing averages of 12.6 points, 2.5 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 37 contests. The team won a school-record 34 duels and led the polls for six weeks. “You really can’t listen to a lot of people because you never know what can happen in certain situations,” he said of discussions on how his game might mesh with the professional ranks. “Somebody telling me I’m going 15 to 20, I don’t listen to that. So it’s all about hard work and knowing what you put in.” Though he turned a deaf ear to prognosticators, his allegiance will definitely go to Cleveland head coach Byron Scott. In two years, the 2008 NBA Coach of the Year, who led the New Jersey, now Brooklyn, Nets to the Finals in ’02 and ’03, has guided the Cavaliers to 40 wins. A three-time champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, Scott stresses accountability and commitment. “I just want to do whatever I have to do to help us win,” Waiters said. “Coach, he’s been here before, and he’s played in the NBA, so it’s my job to pick his brain as much as I can to get better in the league and just work hard and try to get wins and one day get a championship.”

a The 4th Annu
novena to the holy spirit
Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads, so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life You are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank You for all things as You confirm once again that I never want to be separated from You even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with You in eternal glory. Thank You for your mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days and after three days the favor will be granted. The prayer must be published immediately.
