BI agents startled Maribel Caballero at about 7:30 a.m. June 26 as they entered her Watkins-Street home and eventually led her husband from the residence at gunpoint. Authorities did not explain themselves or give a reason for

I have much respect for chefs who have mastered the art of French culinary techniques. The use of fresh, in-season ingredients, properly reduced sauces, the right touch of seasonings and eye appeal are just a few on the list.

I’ve never been one of her fans, but the unfairness of the media excoriation of this woman is disgusting, The corporate sponsors who dropped her like a hot potato are ridiculous buffoons. Repeat demand A North Philly man was arrested for allegedly mugging a woman in Passyunk Square and a teen in Newbold. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor
A
fter a rash of robberies on or near Broad Street one night, Police identified the culprit allegedly responsible for two of them. Gerald Hogan, 36, of North Philly, allegedly was riding a bike when he approached a 28-year-old woman at 9:50 p.m. July 1 on the 1300 block of South Broad Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He is believed to have threatened to shoot her if she didn’t hand over her bag. She gave him her wallet, which contained ID and $5. He fled southbound on Broad. About 35 minutes later, Hogan allegedly pointed a silver handgun at a 14-year-old boy and told him to hand over his property, Tolliver said. The boy retrieved a yellow pocketknife and a quarter from his pocket. Hogan supposedly took the items and ordered the boy to run while he fled westbound on Tasker. Both victims identified Hogan from a photo array, Tolliver said. Hogan was arrested at 6 a.m. July 3 and charged with two counts of robbery, theft, receiving stolen property and simple assault; firearm violations; and related charges, according to court records. Hogan pled guilty to four simple assaults and a robbery between 1999 and 2002. His bail, which had not been posted at press time, was set at $300,000. There also were three other robberies on Broad Street overnight, but police have not linked them to Hogan. Those heists occurred at 11:03 p.m. July 1 on the 1500 block of South 15th Street, 12:02 a.m. July 2 on the 1700 block of South Broad Street and 4:59 a.m. July 2 at 2000 block of South Broad Street, according to police. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.
Striking at three Three assailants beat a man who refused to give them his belongings in Newbold Sunday. A trio of bicyclists surrounded a 53-year-old man and ordered him to empty his pockets at 3 a.m. on the 1900 block of South 17th Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. After he declined to oblige, the men
punched and kicked him, swiped his ball cap and fled in an unknown direction. The victim headed home and a friend transported him to Methodist Hospital, Tolliver said. He was then transferred to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for a possible broken eye socket and bleeding in his eye. A detailed description of the offenders was not available at press time. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.
Double teen-ed
Two teens were apprehended as their victim reported the incident in Bella Vista. The duo followed a 33-year-old man at 12:07 a.m. Saturday on the 700 block of South Eighth Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When he tried to make a phone call, one teen attempted to take his cell, punched him in the face and knocked him down. The victim recovered and ran away, Tolliver said. When officers arrived, he spotted the 15-year-olds headed eastbound on the 700 block of Fitzwater Street. When they saw police, they allegedly ran southbound on Seventh Street where officers stopped the teen from the 400 block of Moore Street. Officers then obtained the teen from the 700 block of Mercy Street on the 700 block of Clymer Street. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.
Holy smokes
A woman lent a lighter to a man who then robbed her as she walked home from a West Passyunk convenience store Thursday. The 20-year-old was inside 7-Eleven, 2300 W. Passyunk Ave., at 4:04 a.m. when an unknown man asked to borrow her lighter, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. She agreed and, as she was leaving, he returned it. many were arrested as Operation Pinpoint is not complete. While she and her staff are working on following up on the incidents, she is proud of those brave enough to tell their story to a broader audience. “I don’t think it’s easy for our community to come out and talk about these abuses, she said. “I know if I’m afraid and I’m executive director of this organization, I also know that every family and every community member is afraid. Aidee and Jose Luis Martinez were two of those courageous speakers. Federal agents questioned the siblings — ages 15 and 11, respectively — for about 30 minutes outside of their Fifth-and-Tasker-streets home at about 9:50 a.m. June 26, Aidee said. They asked about a man whom the pair did not know, who lived in their house and what nationality they were. When Jose Luis wanted to retrieve his mother from inside, the agents allegedly grabbed him and told him he couldn’t go. Soon their mother came down wondering why her children weren’t answering her when she called. She then was questioned as well with her children translating. “I felt scared because they did not let me get my mom, and they wanted my mom to come outside of my house, Jose Luis said. “If they want to talk to me, they need to call first and have our parents present, but most of all, I want my community to be left in peace. “We need to do something public against these kinds of abuses and let them know that our community will not stay quiet as these
abuses continue,â€? Aidee, 15 added in Spanish with AlmirĂłn translating. “We have to raise our voice, and we have to be united and open the doors of communication to ensure that we are all safe and that we can live free from fear in our community.â€? Much of the confusion was caused by a lack of understanding. Juntos alleges warrants were not clearly present and little if any interpretation was provided to the predominantly Spanish-speaking households. The FBI source claims if children were questioned, it may have been by participating probation officers and not FBI agents. Also, any raids that were conducted would have had a valid warrant. “Anywhere where it was, doors were knocked on and people or neighbors were spoken to in more informal ways,â€? the source said. “It was ‘Hey, we’re looking for bad guys. Do you know them.’ — things sort of like that.â€? Regardless, these actions break down trust between law enforcement and the immigrant community, AlmirĂłn said. “As immigration reform is being discussed on a national level, Philadelphia should serve as an example of how to be an immigrant-friendly city, and this is not an immigrant-friendly city if our families and children are treated this way, and police and ICE collaborations still exist, and our families are torn apart,â€? AlmirĂłn said. SPR Contact Managing Editor Amanda L. Snyder at asnyder@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

homes, which prompted Caballero and others to speak up at a press conference July 3 at Ninth and Ellsworth streets. “They began at 6 a.m. in the morning, breaking down doors to peoples’ homes, pulling children out of their beds, pulled out guns in front of children, questioned community members without interpretation and questioned children without their parents present,â€? Erika AlmirĂłn, Juntos’ executive director and a native of 15th and Tasker streets, said referencing law enforcement officers. That day the FBI led a joint effort with the Philadelphia Police Department, as well as local and federal probation officers in an anti-gun violence and gang initiative called Operation Pinpoint, according to an FBI source familiar with the case. The initiative is an expanded effort of District Attorney’s Office’s anti-gun violence program, Focused Deterrence. While U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was not involved in the mission, the department was called afterward if and when needed. “If other violations were discovered in the course of carrying out our efforts and they presented themselves, then we looked into them and dealt with them on a caseby-case basis, but it was by no means an immigration raid,â€? the source said. While it is unclear if Caballero’s husband was taken into custody as a result of the operation, as no charges have been filed, Caballero witnessed her husband being taken away as authorities pointed a gun or possibly a Taser at him, she said. “I told [the agents] that he wasn’t there even though he was,â€? Caballero said of her husband who was found upstairs and escorted from the home. â€œâ€Ś They ended up taking my husband away even against the protest of his children [ages 8 and 3]. “The fear and the trauma that happened in my household is still present. My children are still scared to this day, and I think it’s completely unfair that this is happening. And I just ask that these types of injustices stop in my community.â€?

As the temperatures soar, many residents are keeping cool in the city by making a splash at local pools
Youngsters took advantage of Marian Anderson’s amenities by taking a dip in the South of South pool Monday.

but they drove down to Barry for a change of atmosphere. “It’s nice because there’s a grassy area and you can spread out and get some shade,” Kris Greenwood said, content with their choice. “This is our new pool.” In terms of staying cool, Lynn Greenwood said he and his wife enjoy the air conditioning in their house, but like to sit in the sun occasionally, too. Sometimes it’s too much to go down the Shore every weekend, Kris Greenwood said, “so this is the second best thing I think.” “I MEAN WHAT is there really to do in 93-degree weather in South Philadelphia?” Jennifer Dolce, of 16th and Bigler streets, said as she cooled off at Barry. Dolce likes to head to the pool for some “me” time. “I love it, I usually get here from like 1 p.m. and stay until 2:30 p.m. On the weekend, I come between like 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.,” she said. Of course, there’s a bit of rivalry between which pool in South Philly is the greatest. Dolce, for instance, said Barry is one of the best pools in the area.
“I’m not saying that because I live down the street. I’m just saying overall from living in South Philly my whole life, this is probably one of the best pools,” she said. But Phil Landis, of Center City, said Marian Anderson, which opened June 29, is “the city’s best kept secret.” Landis, who comes to the South of South destination to swim every year, especially enjoys going during “adult swim,” which is the last hour the pool is open, to swim laps. “It increases a sense of community here and it gives us all something we can look forward to and share,” he said of the public pools. Steven Osterhout, also from Center City, like Landis, travels south to Marian Anderson for exercise. “It’s very nice to swim in a pool in the community,” he said. “I meet people I wouldn’t meet otherwise, so there’s a nice social aspect.” And it’s part of good government service, he said. “It’s a very concrete thing that government can do and it makes me feel good that I live in a place that has services like this.” Bottom line, Osterhout sees the pool as a dire need for the area. “Where I grew up, the roofs are not flat like this,” he said, looking through the gate
at the surrounding buildings. “The houses are hot, even when they’re air conditioned, and I think a lot of people can’t necessarily afford to run air conditioning much. So just for health reasons, it’s really critical.” Beate Brockmann, a native of Germany currently residing in Center City, bikes to Marian Anderson regularly to go for a swim. “Since you don’t pay anything, you can stay for as long as you want or come for five minutes to cool off,” Brockmann said. Germantown’s Brooke Jordan works weekdays at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center Summer Camp. She said there is a time when only youngsters from the summer camp, ages 5 through 12, are allowed in the pool. “The swim times [for the children] are from 11 a.m. to noon and then from 2 to 2:45 p.m.,” she said. “After they get out of the pool, they spend the whole time asking when they can go back.” It’s important the youngsters in the area have access to a safe place to cool off in the heat, she said, noting most of the children head back to the pool after camp ends at 3 p.m. “I know just from talking to them, this is a central place for them,” Jordan said. he sun is beaming down, the air is thick and sweat drips off your brow. Yes, it’s summertime in the city. Luckily, residents have an outlet to stay cool: City swimming pools. Since June 20, Philadelphia has been opening its public pools’ gates to patrons. South Philly boasts 10 of the City’s 70 swimming destinations. Destiny DiGregorio, of 15th Street and Oregon Avenue, said she would get bored if she didn’t have a pool to go to. The 10-year-old spent most of her time in the water at Barry, 1800 Johnston St., Saturday, when temperatures hit the mid-90s. With her pink goggles strapped around her head, she said her favorite thing about the pool is, “going under water.” “Not to mention she gets a new bathing suit every other time she comes,” said her father, Jim DiGregorio, with a laugh. As for 12-year-old Jillian Goodwin, of Hicks Street and Oregon Avenue, she enjoys the pool because she “can cool off.” That is, after some fun on the adjoining playground. Goodwin said she’s already visited Barry five or six times since it opened June 26, making it a summertime favorite spot. “I do it for her,” Goodwin’s father, Alfred Mazza, said of his poolside time. “[The pool] gives kids an outlet to burn off some energy, make friends, learn how to swim and have a good time,” he added. The Marconi spot is among 10 South Philly pools the City opened over the course of 10 days that now are open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. weekends. The other nine include Chew, 1800 Washington Ave.; Ford, 609 Snyder Ave.; Marian Anderson, 740 S. 17th St.; Murphy, 300 Shunk St.; O’Connor, 2601 South St.; Ridgeway, 1300 Carpenter St.; Sacks, 400 Washington Ave.; Stinger Square, 1400 S. 32nd St.; and Vare, 2600 Morris St. That’s two times as many pools than the City opened in South Philly in 2009, due to a lack of funding. In 2010, Mayor Michael Nutter’s Splash and Summer FUNd campaign hit its $600,000 private sector goal, giving hope to a community that truly cherishes its pools. Kris and Lynn Greenwood, a couple from Second and Federal streets, tried out Barry for the first time Saturday. The Greenwoods’ usual pool-of-choice is Murphy,

hen Assunta “Dolly” DiJoseph instructs mathematics today at the Old City-headquartered Center for Literacy, she will continue to laud learning as a life-changing aid well worthy of one’s devotion. Along with motivating students to master numbers, the 91-year-old volunteer appreciates helping them to solve non-classroom-situated dilemmas, with the organization commending her June 11 by granting her its Joan & Richard Behr Exceptional Service Award. “Oh, it definitely surprised me to hear my name,” the resident of the 800 block of Dickinson Street said last week at the 45-yearold education provider’s main office, also the site of last month’s ceremony. “I almost didn’t want to rise, but

when I did, I just thanked everyone for giving me the honor and reminded the audience that educators make a difference.” In praising such professionals that evening, though, the Passyunk Square dweller conferred kudos only on her colleagues and not herself, as she credits their dedication, including that of Richard Behr, a Center for Literacy reading tutor and a resident of the 700 block of South Clifton Street who has distributed the eponymous award since 2008, for her success. Their concern certainly guided her early last decade when she, like so many of her present charges, decided to earn her high school equivalency. “I had no fear about resuming my studies even after all those years,” DiJoseph, who dropped out as a West Catholic High School sophomore to tend to her ill mother and found work to help her family after her matriarch’s passing, said. “I wanted to show that no matter what someone’s age is, education is possible.” The friendly figure made her initial attempt a family affair, as she and granddaughter Rita took instruction at the Tolentine Community Center, 1025 Mifflin St., and the South Philadelphia Branch, 1700 S. Broad St., before venturing to Center City to tackle her current agency’s Adult Diploma Program, a curriculum involving more than 150 tasks designed to increase
real-world knowledge. “I found it very interesting and really loved it,” DiJoseph, whose diminutive stature as a baby led her mother to nickname her “Dolly,” said of addressing consumer economics, cultural awareness, government/citizenship/law, health and self-awareness and occupational knowledge chores. “I completed the program in seven months and really felt good about myself when I did.” Graduating at 79, she became one of the organization’s oldest alumni and sought to reciprocate the endowment of belief by striving to assist similarly wisdom-hungry pupils. She landed part-time employment with the company shortly afterward, working with overseer Scott Bostwick to facilitate relationships between learners and their assignment assessors, with a full-time receptionist position at its Center City Gallery for Learning occupying her until ’09. “I’d made minimum wage until I became full-time, and they had to let me go because of budget cuts,” DiJoseph said with a laugh. “I figured I’d want to stay involved somehow, so I chose to volunteer, and that’s been great because from doing it, I really feel as if I’m helping people.” DURING HER UNPAID stint, the nonagenarian has worked at three sites and has relied on

grandizement and never uses her age to accentuate anything other than seeing it as a tool to encourage younger, perhaps doubt-laden, students to persevere no matter the odds. “I’d been out of school for more than six decades, raised a family, had jobs and still believed getting smarter wasn’t out of my reach,” she said. “Plus, being around everyone gives me something great to do, so why wouldn’t I stay? As long as I’m living, I’ll be coming to CFL.” In line with her quest for heightened sophistication, DiJoseph recently completed a trip to Greece, Italy and Turkey and uses the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center, 1430 E. Passyunk Ave., to learn Italian and yoga. An active member of the parish community at Annunciation B.V.M., 1511 S. 10th St., she also revels in occasions to bond with her family through parties and picnics. Though her primary clan has engineered the lion’s share of her memories, her secondary set is also delighting her brain. “I love the CFL community,” she said. “There’s that old saying ‘Use it, or lose it,’ and I love using my mind, especially for these learners.” SPR

her ample life experience to complement her explanations of mathematical operations. While scholastic matters greatly appeal to her as she visits two classes each Thursday, she knows serving as a positive voice often matters more to her successors than her discussing long division. “Many of them come with multiple problems, such as being from dysfunctional families and having histories of drug abuse and homelessness, among others,” DiJoseph said. “So many of them lack culture and values, too, so I’m trying to instill those in them. I’ve come to feel fortunate over the years for what my life has been, so I’m looking to help them believe in a bright future.” Her tireless attention to their welfare caught the eye of her superiors earlier this year, with their naming her the Behr Award recipient the least they could do, according to Kathy Meck. “Dolly is remembered by so many people because she’s always cared about their overall life journey,” the Center for Literacy director of development and marketing said. “She’s a testament to the power of human interaction and inspiration.” Though she indeed has won permanent placement in the hearts of learners, many whom she still sees all over the city, DiJoseph favors refraining from self-ag-

Almost everybody I like is dead

know Michelle Pfeiffer was a girl in that movie because she put on a pair of pants? I found out Uncle has a related problem. He not only venerates everybody that died, he gets confused over whether some celebrities have died or are still living. Uncle thought Ernest Borgnine had died 20 years ago and when he found out last year that Borgnine was still alive, Ernie up and died. That happens to everybody, I assured Uncle. I keep forgetting whether Sophia Loren is still alive or not. I must’ve struck a nerve because Uncle threw the remnants of the free-range turkey sandwich on the floor. “Sophia is still alive,” he shouted. “She is still beautiful. And you, my nephew, are hopeless.” I wanted to know whether Uncle got confused about whether his friends are dead or alive. He admitted that at his age even his friends’ status has become a problem, and he doesn’t know whether to still be upset over the way Vito cheats at cards or whether he has died and earned his forgiveness. He admitted Luigi had shown up to visit him after he had sent a Mass card to Luigi’s wife only two years ago mourning her husband’s death. “Sometimes I even think I’ve already died and this is the afterlife,” he added. “I think — could this be heaven? And then the ugly woman brings me this whitebread sandwich, and I realize this can’t be heaven unless I wasted a lot of time going to the 6 o’clock Mass. “Of course this could be hell, especially the way you’re dressed.” I picked up the sandwich off the floor and placed it on his tray for the attendant. “Maybe you ought to leave your room and eat in the dining room with the others,” I said. Uncle advised me he eats in the main dining room every other night. “I can’t take these people two nights in a row,” Uncle said as he sipped on the espresso I brought him. “Last night this guy next to me tried to tell me that Clark Gable was a better actor than Marcello Mastroianni. He’s the same guy that bragged that the turkey is free-range.” “He reminds me of you,” he added with unmistakable disdain in his voice. “Well, they’re both equally dead,” I said. Uncle looked up from his espresso and asked, “Now you’re going to try and tell me that Mastroianni is dead?” I thought about contradicting Uncle and decided against it. “Of course not,” I said. “You think Mastroianni would die while Sophia Loren is still around?” “Maybe you’re not as dumb as you look,” replied Uncle, as he finished the espresso with a slurp. Tonto (Johnny Depp), right, tells the tale of John Reid’s journey as he transformed and became The Lone Ranger.
Still dusty ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer
“T
he Lone Ranger” has its moments, and anyone who’s gaga for Westerns will fleetingly appreciate the old-school feel and John Ford references, but there’s more to loathe than love in this overloaded tentpole movie, yet another disappointment in what’s become a grim summer for Hollywood. Starring square (and square-jawed) Armie Hammer as the titular masked hero, and Johnny Depp as Tonto (who’s a sidekick despite the fact that Depp received top billing), the origin tale comes from “Pirates of the Carribbean” helmer Gore Verbinski, and it’s clearly meant to launch a new franchise for the director, Depp, and Disney. Running 149 minutes, the film has a beefy plot, which involves John Reid (Hammer), the upright D.A. goes on to become a resurrected justice-seeker; Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner), a squirrelly outlaw hunting for silver; Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson), a tycoon bringing the railroad to an 1860s Texas town; and Tonto, an outcast Native American of few words, who rocks a bird on his head and claims to be tracking an evil spirit. There also are two female archetypes, played by Helena Bonham Carter and Ruth Wilson, but they’re as sidelined as the dark-skinned “savages,” none of whom the studio could be bothered to cast in place of the markedly white Depp. As he showed in the first three “Pirates” films and the beautifully rendered “Rango,” Verbinski has a knack for dreamy, detailed, tactile visuals, and he brings that to his latest work in fits and starts. More often, though, he reaffirms his stance as a director of great indulgence, piling ac-
tion scene upon action scene, climax upon climax, until any urgency or weight in the adventure is hammered into dust. Watching “The Lone Ranger” is exhausting in many more ways than one, for beyond the length and bombast, there’s Depp doing the same tired schtick he’s been pushing since the first “Pirates” flick, and here, the work is unavoidably offensive. The real mask in “The Lone Ranger” is nostalgia, which is unsuccessfully used to downplay what’s another pro-white, pro-male and pro-effects spectacle.

Harrison Ford is tough to stomach as yet another grumbly curmudgeon, but budding star Chadwick Boseman, who takes the lead in this affecting Jackie Robinson biopic, is something of a revelation, especially when forced to suppress the racism-fueled rage is real-life dealt with tale when hitting the big leagues. Rarely sentimental, and transcending offensive “magical negro” cliches, “42” inspires and surprises, and features strong support from the underrated Nicole Beharie. visited my Uncle Nunzi recently in the retirement home where he now lives. He was eating a turkey sandwich on white bread and grumbling the entire time. “I should’ve moved to a retirement home in Italy,” he muttered, “at least I’d get a prosciutto sandwich for lunch on a nice roll.” He cheered up when I told him that I’d do better than that and take him to dinner on Sunday at his favorite Italian restaurant. He then took another bite of his sandwich and started complaining all over again. “You know what they told me when I told them the turkey has no taste? It’s freerange turkey. I don’t care if the turkey rode with The Lone Ranger,” he said, “maybe they should’ve lock it up in solitary confinement to give it some taste.” I finally got Uncle off the subject of the sandwich when he confessed another problem he’s been having. “You know, almost everybody I like is dead,” he said. I told him that didn’t make me feel very good. He said it’s not always about me. Then we discussed how dead people always seem superior to the living. The dead have a natural advantage over the living when it comes to reputation. Nobody is supposed to speak ill of the dead, so naturally we only complain about the living. The only two dead people I ever heard Uncle criticize were Hitler and Stalin (he still feels Mussolini got a bad rap because he did make the trains run on time). Uncle claims all of the great literature and music were written by people who have since died. I think it only seems that way because it takes many years for a writer or painter’s reputation to grow in stature, and by that time, they’re dead. If Michelangelo were still living, people would be griping that the art on the Sistine Chapel was derivative and the color was all wrong. The same with Shakespeare. He died just in time to save his reputation. I have it on good authority that The Times’ theater critic in London was about to write a scathing review of “Romeo And Juliet,” claiming it encouraged teen suicide. And all that stuff with boys playing girls and girls dressing up like boys in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” just was not credible. You think me and the guys on the corner didn’t

con and roasted in the oven. The result was a dry overcooked breast of duck, which took on an unpleasant gray hue. A pyramid-shaped bit of rice topped with a few pencil-thin asparagus sat on the plate. The duck was lukewarm and the rice mix cold. Our understanding waiter offered me another entrée. I ordered the rib-eye steak medium-rare ($23). A rib-eye is an ovalshaped steak, rich with marbling and adorned with the “lip,” the most tender part, which surrounds the meat. I have never seen one shaped like a rectangle. I am not sure this was a rib-eye because there was no marbling and no lip. It was a tender cut and was topped with chopped black trumpet mushrooms. The aforementioned cool potatoes and spinach sat on = Very Good

have much respect for chefs who have mastered the art of French culinary techniques. The use of fresh, in-season ingredients, properly reduced sauces, the right touch of seasonings and eye appeal are just a few on the list. Chef Adán Saavedra, who is from Mexico, decided to marry the flavors of his native land with French technique when he opened Paloma in Northeast Philly about 13 years ago. He is dedicated to haute cuisine and food fads be damned. He moved Paloma to Bella Vista right across the street from Cucina Forte. I don’t know why I never reviewed Paloma, so a visit was in order. A bubbly woman met me at the door and we chatted about the rain while Edward found a parking spot. Since the restaurant is quite dark, she asked our server to seat us near the window. Paloma is lovely. The dining rooms have white walls, colorful artwork and fresh yellow roses that set off the crisp white linen and modern flatware. The restaurant features a three-course dinner Tuesday through Thursday, but Edward and I decided to order from the à la carte menu. Our server opened the French burgundy we brought, wrapped it in a napkin and poured us a taste in a most professional manner. A hot-from-the-oven loaf of bread from a Portuguese bakery in Newark, N.J. kept us happy. It was served with a small mound of whipped sour cream piped from a pastry bag. A small dish of hot chili sauce with a demi-tasse spoon arrived and we were urged to be careful. It was quite hot.
We began dinner with corn chowder ($9.50) and crab ceviche ($12.50). The soup was rich, bursting with fresh corn, potatoes, onions, red peppers, poblano and ancho chilis. It was prepared with a homemade vegetable stock and topped with baby shrimp. Saavedra achieved the perfect balance of heat and flavor in this tasty bowl. French technique was apparent in his ceviche presentation. Jumbo lump crabmeat was marinated in lime juice, olive oil, shallots, jalapeño and cilantro and placed atop a round stack of sliced red ripe tomato and avocado. The ceviche lacked acid. A true ceviche is made with raw fish that is “cooked” in lemon or lime juice. Still, it was a cool and pleasant way to begin dinner. All it required was a sprinkling of salt. Unfortunately, our entrées went south. Edward ordered the branzino ($23) and I looked forward to breast of duck ($25). To the best of my knowledge, branzino is not eaten in Mexico or France. It is a Mediterranean fish that must be cooked on the bone to impart a rich flavor. Saavedra filleted the fish and baked it in the oven along with capers and olives and finished it with a tomato Serrano chili sauce. It was bland and arrived lukewarm. A round stack of cool mashed potatoes were set on a few sautéed spinach leaves. Mashed potatoes, or pomme puree, is a French invention. They must be whipped into submission with lots of butter. This version fell flat. My duck was prepared with a boneless, skinless duck breast. No chef would remove the skin from a duck before cooking it. This was the first problem. Before the skinned duck was seared, it was stuffedwith caramelizes shallots, wrapped in ba-

Le Virtù’s Brodetto Vastese
J
Chef Joe Cicala
Le Virtù Owners: Francis Cratil Cretarola and Catherine Lee Opened October 2007 1927 E. Passyunk Ave. 215-271-5626 levirtu.com
oe Cicala grew up eating authentic Sicilian cuisine in his hometown of Washington, D.C., and had his first taste of the food business when he assisted his mother at her catering operation. “I didn’t really have any interest in learning anything else because I enjoy eating it so much,” Cicala said of the Italian food he now features at Le Virtù, 1927 E. Passyunk Ave. Cicala took a few culinary classes, but soon set off to Italy where he studied under renown chef Pietro Rispoli. While he returns to the country for personal and work excursions, a member of the staff heads across the Atlantic at least three times a year, too. “We want to source as much of our products from Abruzzo if not Southern Italy for sure,” he said of the fresh, authentic ingredients popping up in many of his dishes, including his Brodetto Vastese, a seafood stew made to
share in a 2-foot wide clay pot that he first experienced on a trip last year. “It’s made for six people at least,” Cicala, who resides at 12th and Ritner streets with his wife, Angela Ranalli — who serves as Le Virtù’s pastry chef — and their 5-year-old son, Agostino, said. “It arrives at the table still boiling. It’s really cool to see.”

The Art of coaching An esteemed mentor recently retired after nearly three decades at a Girard Estate school. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

ecause of his early exposure to leadership roles through sports, Art Kratchman can count himself among the fortunate gures who as children can envision their vocational goals. After 37 years with the School District of Philadelphia, the last 29 of which he spent helming the athletic department at the Girard Academic Music Program, 2136 W. Ritner St., the Cherry Hill, N.J. resident retired June 24, though with inspiring youngsters as an unavoidable interest, he has not ruled out a return to the competitive world. “I always loved helping the kids at GAMP to know how to do the right thing and act the appropriate way,” the 59-yearold motivator said Monday. “I wanted my athletes to play hard and leave their bodies out there because competing is more than about winning and losing; it’s also about developing character.” Fearing the decimation of the Girard Estate site’s athletic identity because of the district’s $304-million operating deficit, Kratchman submitted his plan to part with his employer April 14. That meant the affable man, who as a boy absorbed sports knowledge “like a savant,” would leave his duties as a health and physical education i n s t r u c t o r, athletic director and coach of the baseball and boys’ basketball Art Kratchman received numerous accolades for his dedication to local studentathletes including multiple South Philly Review Coach of the Year honors. teams. Having completed what became his final hardwood campaign in December, he made his decision at the start of the recently concluded diamond season. “I knew we could compete early on in our baseball endeavors because there’s always been a solid pool of talent in South Philly,” Kratchman said of his more successful squads, the first of which took the field in 1987. “ I b e n e fi t e d from having great players, parents and administrators, all who k n ew t h a t maturation is on par with victories, by my side.” Stressing preparation and
tenacity, he witnessed his charges win nearly 300 games and capture eight District 12 Class A and AA championships, including six straight from 2005 to ’10. The players also secured eight appearances in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament, winning the program’s lone state contest last year, which followed their advancing to the Public League title tilt. Twice the league’s runner-up, the Pioneers solidified their status in GAMP’s annals by claiming the ’02 crown. “They caught lightning in a bottle,” Kratchman said of that year’s roster members, who overcame a 5-9 regular-season league mark to slay four postseason foes by a total of six runs. “Those victories stand out but so do many others. Every journey with the guys is going to remain with me.” This year’s unit advanced to the league semifinals and saw then-senior infielder Joe Brinkman and soon-to-be senior pitcher Jacob Kurtz achieve Division A First-Team designation, the 66th and 67th All-Public picks under the outgoing coach. “It’s easy to win when you have talent,” Kratchman, whose last game was June 4’s 3-2 first-round state setback against Calvary Christian at Temple University’s Ambler campus, said. “I give all the credit to my players.” THOUGH HE GAINED more renown honing diamond ambitions, the threetime South Philly Review Readers’ Choice Coach of the Year began his own sojourn as a basketball player and fondly recalled attending clinics with legendary coaches Harry Litwack, a graduate of South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., and Jack Ramsay, of Temple and Saint Joseph’s universities. Hoops continued to hold his fascination as he entered
PRO SPORTS at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php adulthood, including an assistant coaching stint at Murrell Dobbins High School through which he molded the talent of Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble, both of whom earned All-American status at Loyola Marymount University in 1990. “I came to GAMP right after Dobbins and was essentially told ‘This is your baby’ when I discussed building up our athletic program,” Kratchman, whose prePioneers time also involved subbing chores at the former Edward Bok Technical High School, 1901 S. Ninth St., and teaching at A.S. Jenks Academics Plus School, 2501 S. 13th St., said. “With that in mind, I knew I’d look to bring basketball here.” His rim rockers experienced fewer happy moments than their baseball brethren, accumulating 130 wins since their ’90 inception, but the final bunch notched nine league wins to set a school record and gave Kratchman his seventh player with at least 1,000 points through the explosive exploits of recent graduate Tobias Stokes. “We didn’t always have great talent, but the heart was always there,” he said of overseeing the squads, which featured 19 All-Public honorees. “With basketball, baseball, whatever, I’m looking for whoever replaces me to be someone who wants to run a great program because that’s what GAMP has. Sports are often the carrot that drives kids, and they’re a great way to inspire confidence.” Believing he will again find himself drawn to coaching, Kratchman, who will turn 60 Saturday, is staying sharp through a trek to Israel, where will act in a liaison role for the 19th Maccabiah Games participants competing from July 17 to 31. Having often received praise from his former players, he still defers to them when pondering what his nearly three-decade stay in South Philly has yielded. “I grow older and the kids stay the same age,” Kratchman, a father of two who celebrated his 35th anniversary to wife Judy Tuesday, said of having needed to stay mentally and physically keen each year. “No matter what I’ve done, teaching or coaching, I’ve stressed responsibility. My players bought into that, and I’m thankful for having had the chance to grow with them.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. or failing to acknowledge using a third ineligible player, the girls’ basketball team at Prep Charter High School, 1928 Point Breeze Ave., will have its two District 12 AAA City titles and two of its three Public League championships vacated. The West Passyunkbased program also must return its crowns and will suffer a twoseason playoff ban in the wake of a nearly five-month investigation by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association and the School District of Philadelphia. “All [Prep Charter] sports [teams] will be barred from the postseason for one year as well,” PIAA District 12 chairman Robert Coleman said Tuesday. “The school will receive a letter with instructions and will have 30 days to respond. It can appeal, too.” His entity learned Feb. 23 of allegations that the Lady Huskies were suiting up non-city residents. Following their 5637 thrashing of Central the next day to three-peat as the Public League’s victors, the athletes became the subjects of a probe that initially yielded nothing untoward. As the matter intensified, a district inspector general’s report determined Hannah Timmons and Martianna Wilson commuted from Coatesville to matriculate at Prep Charter, even though the school had listed them as having Southwest Philly addresses. For out-of-city learners to attend city charters, their names must appear behind those of city residents on a waiting list, with their school districts to cover tuition costs. Through the improper addresses, the two players secured spots more quickly. The falsified information led District 12 to issue a one-year postseason ban and a two-year probation period for the entire athletic department May 17, with Coleman then requiring the school to provide every student athlete’s address.
“Site visits to homes ensued, and we gave Prep Charter officials an opportunity to disclose any other potential problems, but they didn’t,” Coleman said. He noted that the initial transgressions would not cost the Lady Huskies their titles, as their overseers had presented signed transfer waivers before the investigation’s February beginnings. Those principal-signed forms stated school personnel believed the transfers were not athleticallybased. Pressing on, investigators learned that a third, as of y e t , u n i d e n t i fi e d player documented as a Southwest Philly dweller, also came to Prep Charter from outside the city’s environs, this time from South Jersey. “Keeping track of football players’ addresses can be tough, certainly, but when you have a dozen girls, you need to know where they’re from,” Coleman, who learned through Prep Charter that it has relieved Chuck Pearsall of his athletic director duties, said. He added the district will go forward with looking to recover tuition costs for the trio and revealed he and District’s 12 board of directors will likely confer with Paul Reiser in early August to gauge his knowledge of the entire situation. The former coach oversaw two of the Lady Huskies’ league-vanquishing runs and last year’s City victory over Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., and recently accepted the coaching job at West Catholic High School. “We will give him due process, with the consequences running from A to Z if he’s found culpable,” Coleman said. Noting one should not consider the matter closed, he added the school will have one year to “investigate and clean up” its operations. “There’s definitely going to be a sense of urgency,” Coleman said. “It’s time for them to tend to their own matters.” SPR

S.T.J
NOVENA TO ST. JUDE
Oh Holy St. Jude, apostle and Martyr, great in virtue & rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depths of my heart & humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present & urgent petition. In return I promise to make your name known & cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Mary’s & Gloria’s. St. Jude, pray for us & all who invoke your aid. Amen. (never known to fail). O Most Beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful Vine Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here You are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor my necessity (Make Request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. Then you must publish it and it will be granted to you.
