ur allies in doing so change, but the intense education of children will always remain our goal,” Charles J. Chaput said Monday morning at St. Gabriel School, 2917 Dickinson St. “We have great love

for that duty and a responsibility to uphold it.” The 68-year-old Archbishop of Philadelphia traveled to the Grays Ferry institution to mark its official designation as a participant in the Independence Mission Schools system. Along with 13 other parochial elementary facilities, including St. Thomas Aquinas School, 1719 Morris St., St. Gabriel will operate independently of the Archdio-

cese and consult its own board of directors to expand enrollment and opportunities for enrollees. “Today’s kids have many more learning options than we did,” George Sumner, a 1968 St. Gabriel alumnus, said. “They’re pretty much going to school for everything, including help with their See MISSION SCHOOLS page 10 >>

Concerning marriage To the Editor: In Genesis 2:24 we read, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body. Marriage proceeds from natural law, which is the creator’s will for his creation. Man is free to choose his own will. The consequences to his choices, however, are easily seen in the daily newspapers and TV coverage. Obedience to scripture brings joy and happiness to those who follow the natural law ordained by its author. Sodom and Gomorrah, on the other hand, received the effects of illicit sexual unions. Contraction of the HIV virus affects many innocent lives simply because the natural law was breached and its effects were passed on to countless others. Sin hurts everyone. Marriage is a beautiful reflec-

tion of the love of God for his creatures. This mutual love is selfgiving and self-sacrificing, open to the blessing of new life in accord with nature and respectful of the physical and spiritual dignity of the beloved. “Love one another as I have loved you. This simple sentence says everything. Let us follow the path that leads to eternal happiness. True love makes this possible making our burdens lighter and our joys sweeter. The choice is all ours — life or death. you are an African-American and charged with a crime, no matter the offense, because you are black there will be no justice for you. Our entire nation is out to get you only because you are black. There never seems to be a fair and just decision or resolve that can appease everyone, so here we go again. As expected, and certainly anticipated by the rest of our nation, demonstrations once again ensued against a fair-and-just decision in the [George] Zimmerman trial. The unexpected and race-baited outburst from Mayor [Michael] Nutter, calling the death of the victim an assassination. All of this despite the huge, unbelievable strides and accomplishments in all endeavors of African-Americans, and, of course, that includes Nutter becoming the mayor of Philadelphia. They came out in droves, complaining about the profiling of blacks with the stop-and-frisk effort by the police, and then screeced bloody murder at the huge increase of black-on-black killings. Can’t

South PhillyReview you just sense the bullheaded wrongness here? And the granddaddy of them all — O.J. Simpson. With a stacked jury of mostly blacks, in a startling miscarriage in the annals of the American justice system, he was deemed not guilty. Black colleges erupted into a pandemonium of joyful outburts nationwide. Yes, there is racism in our country, but nothing will equal the O.J. verdict. How dare anyone call the Zimmeran trial racist. Now one white person formed gangs of rabble-rousers to march in protest against the O.J. farce. Now where is the true racism? An armed duo targeted a man and woman in Newbold. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor

A

pair of robbers split up to mug two victims at once Monday. The offender carrying a knife approached a 22-year-old man from behind, pushed him and demanded his property at 12:30 a.m. on the 1000 block of South 15th Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The pair struggled as the perpetrator took his wallet, which contained ID, credit cards and $20. Meanwhile, another man armed with a black gun did the same to a 24-year-old woman, but since she did not have anything of value on her, the duo fled northbound on 15th Street, Tolliver said. During the incident, the victim suffered minor cuts to his right hand and left side, which medics treated on site, Tolliver said. The suspects were described as black, age 18 to 22, 5-foot-8 and thin. The knife-wielding man was further described as having a dark complexion and short braids, and wearing a red hoodie and blue jeans while the gunman was further described as having a medium complexion and short hair, and wearing a black longsleeve shirt and blue jeans. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Sunday night kill A Grays Ferry man was gunned down two blocks from his home Sunday night. Jacques Charles, 32, of the 2800 block of Wharton Street, was found with gunshot wounds to his chest, arm and leg at 9:12 p.m. on the 2700 block of Reed Street, according to the Police Public Affairs Unit. He was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead eight minutes later. Police did not have any suspects or a motive at press time. To report information, call Homicide Division at 215-686-3334, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Car trauma A man returned to his parked vehicle in Point Breeze Monday to find it severely vandalized with bullets. The 46-year-old parked his car near 21st and Reed streets at about 1 a.m. Monday, but when he returned 11 hours later, the windows were shattered, the tires were flat and there were several bullet holes through-

out the automobile, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Cloudy crime A Passyunk Square deliveryman was robbed Monday but cannot recall the confrontation. The 26-year-old was biking to a delivery for Iztaccihuatl, 1122 S. Eighth St., when a unknown man stepped in front of him on the 1400 block of South Sixth Street — just two blocks north of his destination — at 11:06 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The employee stopped to allow the man to pass when another unknown man punched him in the back of the head. He fell to the ground and woke up a short time later with people asking if he was OK. He then realized his iPhone and $275 were missing from his pocket. A detailed description of the offenders was not available at press time. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Image catcher Video surveillance helped police to nab the man who robbed a woman walking from a West Passyunk convenience store two weeks ago. Police recovered the footage July 8, four days after the 20-year-old was mugged as she ventured from 7-Eleven, 2301 W. Passyunk Ave., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Investigators recognized the alleged perpetrator — Andre Cunningham, 21, of the 2300 block of Bambrey Terrace — and the victim identified him from a photo array. Police arrested Cunningham at the rear of his home July 10. Cunningham allegedly borrowed and returned a lighter from the woman inside the store, Tolliver said. As she was walking on the 2300 block of South Bonsall Street, he is believed to have pulled $47 from her bra, pushed her down and fled. Cunningham was charged with robbery, theft, terroristic threats, indecent assault, simple assault and related offenses, according to court records. His bail, set at $50,000, was not posted by press time.

COURT REPORT may have broken his jaw early Sunday. A 29-year-old was waiting for his friend to exit Xfinity Live!, 1100 Pattison Ave., at 1:40 a.m. when an unknown man strongly bumped his shoulder, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The 29-year-old said, “Yo buddy, you didn’t have to bump me like that” and turned around. The other man responded, “What you say?” to which the man repeated himself. The unknown man then walked up to the 29-year-old and punched him on the left side of his jaw, knocking him to the ground. A medic transported the injured man to HUP for treatment of his possibly broken jaw, Tolliver said. It was unknown if he needed surgery at press time. The suspect was described as white, age 27, 5-foot-9, 160 to 170 pounds and having a light-colored beard. Peaceful promotion local community group presents its sixth-annual effort to promote non-violence. Unity in the Community, led by West Passyunk’s Anton Moore, will kick off Peace Week July 28 with a prayer at local churches for Trayvon Martin and others lost as a result of gun violence. Addressing the matter A South-of-South marathoner will test her might g to tout an organization’s fight against homelessness.

hile many individuals cover marathon courses to fulll lifelong promises to themselves, Maggie Guterl calls on them to strengthen her running resolve. The resident of the 1900 block of Bainbridge Street will attempt her sternest yet most welcomed endeavor at this weekend’s Stroehmann Back on My Feet 20in24 Challenge, for which she has raised funds to combat homelessness. “Each year this is the race I put everything into,” the 32-year-old said Tuesday at Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, Broad Street and Pattison Avenue. “I expect it to be very competitive this year, and I’d love to place, but aside from my ng actual involvement, I’m glad to be helping Back on My Feet again.” The South-of-South dweller and West Chester native learned of the six-year-old, Center City-based chapter in 2009 and ventured to the 8.4-mile Schuylkill River running loop that year as a Midnight Madness entrant. Observing the Lone Ranger Ultra-Marathon participants testing their endurance, she decided to further her interest in lengthy paths by becoming one two years later. “It’s definitely a different sort of suffering,” Guterl, a veteran of the Broad Street Run and Philadelphia Marathon, said. “There has to be something wrong with you if you’re an ultra marathoner.” The personal trainer has found many things right about pairing her foot fortitude with Back on My Feet’s mission to enlist running as an independence-driving, selfsufficiency-intensifying practice for homeless individuals. “It’s a unique program because of how much emphasis it puts on building up someone’s self-esteem,” Guterl said. “It feels great to run for a cause and to explain to people how vital it is to refrain from judging the homeless and start helping them.” Tuesday’s trek to the Packer Park recreation site allowed the athlete to meet Rachelle Damminger, Back on My Feet’s vice president for communications and corporate relations, whose employer has helped 193 residential members to secure jobs, 177 to enroll in job training programs and reeducation opportunites and 137 to obtain housing. Through various facilities, the Philadelphia chapter, one

of 10 na-tionwide,, learns of down-m trodden people to whom ithey can offer a communiat ty bent on fostering what he its website notes is “the ate very profound and innate arddesire for all of us, regardcioless of age, race and scioeconomic status, to feel recalued ognized, appreciated, valued and important.” b come “Many of our residentiall members to us with an athletic background, yet for many of them, this is their first time running,” Damminger said. “No matter their experience, they come to us with diverse backgrounds, and we try to change any negative perceptions about them.” The Back on My Feet worker added that when the solace-seeking individuals gather for runs, they possess uniformity in that no matter what led to their lot in life, they see running as a common balm. “I agree with that completely,” Guterl said. “No matter who people have been or who they are, running is an equalizer.

Mag Maggie Guterl will look to cover more than 120 miles in tha her weekend runhe ning endeavor. nin S ta f f P h o t o s b y K at h r y n P o o l e

I know that doesn’t re remain the same in all h races are over, but in terms of senses when the need for stability, we’re peers.” THE REFLECTIVE RUNNER developed her racing enthusiasm as a girl and, after a brief hiatus, rekindled in with her ’07 involvement in the Broad Street Run. Circling City Hall, she found the atmosphere amazing and soon began to enter tri-state area competitions, with Tennessee luring her to a different time zone for the April 24, ’10 Country Music Marathon. “I’ve been really active the last three years because I like simultaneously challenging and surprising myself,” Guterl,

who finished second in her age group at July 7’s Waitsfield, Vt.-situated Mad Marathon/Half Marathon, a performance that made the Green Mountain State her 17th stop on her 50-states goal list, said. “Just like the homeless participants in Back on My Feet, I run to get a sense of determination and discipline, but I give them way more credit.” Five race options comprise 20in24, with a five-person relay challenge, a pajama loop and a two-timer, two-person relay joining the Midnight Madness task and the Lone Ranger Ultra-Marathon as critical aids for Back on My Feet’s outreach. Guterl will make her third Ultra-Marathon appearance, with her initial attempts yielding 97- and 109.9-mile efforts. “The preparation is intense, and, yes, I definitely get tired, but I put all my eggs in one basket for this one,” she said. “I’ve set a lofty goal for myself of 16 laps, so I’ll really be looking to make an impression.” If she hits her mark, Guterl will come within 3.4 miles of the all-time 20in24 record by New Jersey’s Sabrina Moran, who on May 6 broke the American female record by covering 147.9 miles to win the Cleveland-based North Coast 24 Hour race. Having prepared herself properly, the local distance runner intends not to stress hher body as she ponders improving on last yyear’s fourth-place finish. “The experience is always a reminder of hhow fortunate most of us are because we uuse it to bring attention to a very importtant cause,” Guterl, whose overall weekend ccompanions will include roughly 30 residdential members, said. “I’m excited to be aan advocate.” Also involved with Achilles International, which helps individuals with all types of disw abilities to compete, she values any contributions she can make to promoting running and, more importantly, believing in oneself. Due to subject herself to a five-marathonsin-five-days schedule in September and then November’s Philadelphia Marathon, she will gain more expertise in both. “I left running for a time, but now I know it’s more than simply testing myself,” Guterl said. “It’s about growing, too.” SPR For more information, visit backonmyfeet.org. MISSION SCHOOLS continued from page 1 character and self-esteem, so we have to get them to stand out.” The resident of the 1200 block of Durfor Street will serve as the board chairman for his alma mater, Grays Ferry’s lone Catholic school. He and his peers have begun raising scholarship funds, with their site’s new overseers to facilitate further connections with local business heads, civic leaders and other potential financial saviors. They are uniting as a result of the Feb. 16, 2012 announcement that the Chaput-appointed Blue Ribbon Commission would not shutter the now-105-year-old location because of a sixfigure deficit and equally abundant parish subsidies. Had the body closed the school’s doors, pupils would have needed to continue their faith-based tutelage at Newbold’s St. Thomas Aquinas. Each spot petitioned to remain separate, with the committee saying they could yet with supervision. “As Catholics, we define ourselves by our values and that includes tending to the underprivileged,” Independence Mission Schools president Aldo Cavalli, whose organization becomes the first one to obtain complete ownership of a group of Catholic elementary schools, said of adding the 14 molders of young minds, with all but East Lansdowne’s St. Cyril of Alexandria within the city’s limits. “This model is one that we believe will set the standard for urban Catholic education nationwide, and we are proud that Philadelphia is where it begins.” HIS EMPLOYER’S WEBSITE notes the outreach will benefit “underserved neighborhoods,” with nearly 4,100 children, 65 percent of whom are non-Catholic registrants, set to receive enhanced educational offerings through “lean, entrepreneurial business management practices and academic accountability.” Since the Independence Mission Schools personnel began intense promotion of the system earlier this year, enrollment figures have increased by seven percent, heavenly news for Brian McElwee. “This marks the first time since 2006 that many of these schools have seen bumps in enrollment,” the chairman said, adding he hopes the tally swells to 5,500 within four years, with fundraising and overhead costs allowing his company to provide lessons for under $4,200 per student. Next year’s enrollees tentatively stand to receive $4 million in scholarships, with the Educational Improvement Tax and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit granting corporate taxpayers up to a 90 percent tax credit on annual program contributions totaling as much as $400,000 to a qualified, nonprofit endowment fund. St. Gabriel students already have prospered through such gifts, as representatives last fall joined figures from Calvary Temple Christian

Academy, 3301 S. 20th St.; Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St.; St. Anthony of Padua Regional School, 913 Pierce St.; and St. Monica School, 16th and Porter streets, at Our Lady of Hope Regional Catholic School, 1248 Jackson St., to share $98,416 from the Harrisburgbased Bridge Educational Foundation. “Scholarships will be the key to keeping students flowing into this school,” 1971 St. Gabriel graduate Basil Merenda, former Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under Gov. Ed Rendell, said. “We’re eager to help people to understand the nuts and bolts of applying for them.” With plans to accumulate a plethora of supporters, the Independence Mission Schools team desires more than sustainability for its assisted facilities, a sentiment that Merenda, a native of the 1900 block of South Hollywood Street, seconded when he said he wants an unlimited lifetime for his career-inspiring grade school. Cavalli, McElwee and their colleagues seek to contribute to the 14 schools’ communities by tracking student progress beyond the youths’ elementary days, with high school, college and vocational program monitoring to augment their efforts. They will execute their brainchild with a four-principle approach aiming to bridge the academic achievement gap often separating urban learners from greater endeavors; provide student-centered academic programs with faith matters at the core; offer a relatively low-cost alternative to the public education model by optimizing existing infrastructure for cost reductions and calling on entrepreneurial busi-

ness management; and sustain institutions that have served as neighborhood beacons that can come to give more help to underserved and immigrant demographics. That approach perfectly meshes with what Pat Doherty and his cohorts presented in trying to salvage St. Gabriel last year. “This announcement will level the playing field and then give kids an advantage because it will encourage them to want to achieve even more,” the ’75 alumnus said. “Regardless of ethnicity or creed, whoever sits in those classrooms is going to get a great education.” Monday’s event came exactly two weeks after the actual beginning of the Independence Mission Schools’ tenure as the new keepers of the facilities’ future. With McElwee at his side, Chaput signed the official transfer of the schools yet made clear that though he is parting with their main maintenance, he is not losing them as carriers of Catholic values. “They are still our schools, and we wish them well,” the archdiocese’s ninth archbishop said. “In fact, we believe they will thrive because of the committed teams now assembling.” As the Archdiocese and its churches continue to combat financial problems, Chaput acknowledged more schools might need to become mission facilities, yet he revealed any changes would have the sustenance of brighter days for youths as their inspiration. “Our mission is education,” he said. “That can’t be altered or neglected.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. ith an abundance of talent and tenderness at her disposal, Cris Valkyria will venture to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia tonight to offer melodic counterpoints to young patients’ maladies. The 34-year-old guitarist will receive accompaniment from colleague Lou Paglione, with whom she has teamed for more than three years to advocate for children’s social and emotional progression. “Once we enter their rooms, we’re striving to spread joy and induce a positive message,” Valkyria said last week from her seven-year home on the 2000 block of Pemberton Street. “We interact with kids with various afflictions, some terminal, so we want to provide an enriching experience.” The South-of-South dweller and her New Jersey-situated peer have spent more than two years making visits to the medical faS ta f f p h o t o b y K at h r y n P o o l e

cility as contributors to Musicians on Call, a New York City-headquartered organization that has united volunteers and ailing individuals in Philadelphia since 2004. Rare among their fellow tunesmiths for their child-centered appearances, they call on their altruistic identity to augment their musicianship and further infatuation with strengthening youngsters for their numerous challenges. “I give so much credit to the families who are going through so much,” Valkyria, who nine years ago earned licensure as a clinical psychologist in her native Norway and dealt with clans in crisis before starting a Chestnut Hill-based private practice for adults, said of trying to mollify their misery. “Childhood can be rough enough without having to combat sickness.” Youth inspired the singer three years ago to fuse her alternative rock predilection with lighter material. Penning the “Potty Training Song” for her now-5-year-old son Caspian, the mother paired with Paglione, a multi-instrumentalist and father of two who has assisted her as a four-year presence in her band The Valkyrians, to devise ditties to help children to master such concepts as displaying manners, sharing and toothbrushing. Their ’10 debut album, “Cris and Lou and the Virtues,” aided in their establishing themselves as trustworthy voices,

with the potty training tune leading to the creation of an iTunes application. “We’re just about to finish our second album, where we’ll address topics for older kids, such as not being a bully and using their imagination,” Valkyria said of the planned September release of “The Treasure Box.” “We might then have our third focus on anatomy. At this point, we’re happy with the reception our songs’ sentiments has received, and we’d love to reach more audiences.” As they will not know until tonight’s arrival where they will perform or how many patients they will look to uplift, the friends realize their CHOP trek serves as a semicontrast to their overall child-geared output, in that the fewer they see, the better they know the professionals are working. “They need the good vibes,” Valkyria, who became a Musician on Call through a Paglione contact, said. “If we’re the ones to bring them some sort of comfort, we do our best to let them know we care.” THE SENSITIVE SINGER kick-started her note-filled existence as a Scandinavian teenager with a penchant for poetry. Seeing the genre as therapeutic, she believed she could accentuate emotions by setting her verse to music. “I found doing so could add many layers to

Valkyria said. She feels the same about her presentations to their younger crowds, including those whom they will delight Saturday at Center City’s Hard Rock Cafe and Aug. 20 at The Philadelphia Zoo’s Rock and Roar event. Adding to her giving nature, she donates portions of proceeds to charities such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer and the Philadelphia Children’s Alliance for victims of sexual abuse. “Children need allies, so, again, whatever we can do appeals to us,” Valkyria said, adding she and Paglione find themselves excited about finding more causes and outlets for their generosity. Owing to her past counseling role for children and her continuing duty as a music therapy provider, the entertainer, who will return to her homeland with her son later this month for a much-desired vacation, yearns to build morale, knowing those for whom she performs will one day shape the world with their zeal. “Doom and gloom have too much pull,” Valkyria said. “When we see happy children, we know music can foster change.” SPR For more information, visit crisandlou.com. my feelings and the complexity of emotional states,” Valkyria said of making music an obsession as she entered early adulthood. Academics held the ultimate sway, though, culminating in her ’04 graduation from the University of Oslo. With her husband’s landing a job through Princeton’s Educational Testing Services, she relocated to Center City and eventually South Philly, with Caspian’s birth granting her admission in the “instant moms’ club” that she said has become necessary for her childheavy neighborhood. “I’ve pretty much grown up in America because it’s helped to shape my past experiences, and Philadelphia has given me a safe place to explore my musical selfhood,” Valkyria said. “It’s helped me understand musical chemistry better, too.” Teeming with deeply cerebral themes and a budding sense of bonding with listeners, she and her bandmates began to compile a lengthy list of gigs, with Valkyria aiming for catharsis yet knowing each outing will enhance her creative curiosity. With that influx of severity and sentimentality, The Valkyrians soon will issue their first fulllength album, with 12 tracks set to give her older supporters sonic solace. “We’re not exactly young, so we’re not looking to take over the world, but we feel we can improve our craft and excel,”

The Chaos Factor

I

control) over the government’s ability to gather information on us, and I am, but I also am concerned that individuals, such as Snowden, well-meaning or not (I’m not sure which in his case), can introduce a kind of chaos into our national lives. No one elected Snowden to make decisions on how best to protect our security. Whether he is right or wrong, it frightens me that he made this decision on his own. Is it my terrible need for tidiness that overwhelms me? The leaker is part of “The Chaos Factor.” The president is conflicted on foreign policy. He is rumored to be fed up with the Afghan government and ready to pull our troops out ahead of schedule. Afghanistan is in chaos. It is impossible to tell our friends from our enemies or who really is in charge. Yet, the clamor rises for us to leap into the chaos of the civil war in Syria or to pick sides in last week’s military coup in Egypt. Egypt is chaos personified. A first attempt at democracy failed because the Muslim Brotherhood, the democratically elected government, is essentially antidemocratic. Theocracy is not democracy. But there is chaos in the streets, and we wonder why the military just couldn’t wait a few years while the Muslim Brotherhood imploded from its own inept nastiness. And just how is it anyway that some of our best and brightest minds still believe that we can influence events in the Middle East to produce peaceful democracy? Closer to home, I hate the chaos that is Harrisburg. There is no orderly approach to the schools, mass transit or jobs — only chaos and uncertainty. No real fiscal policy emanates from our terribly failed governor, Tom Corbett and his squabbling Republican legislature. Each year, we have to try and overcome the massive indifference from Harrisburg where the governing philosophy toward Philadelphia seems to derive from Marie Antoinette. The only certainty in Pennsylvania is uncertainty when it comes to funding the needs of Philadelphia. There is a great danger at the heart of the need we, older Americans, have for orderly lives. It is that in our quest for quiet we can become unable to accept evolutionary social change. That in our natural preference for an orderly life we create bogeymen, insulate ourselves from the rest of the community and enmesh ourselves entirely in self-interest. Sometimes I find it even difficult to differentiate between progress and chaos. I wonder if I were this age in 1776 whether I would have just seen the patriots as rabble-rousers and the war for Independence as inconvenient? And so it turns out that I spend a good deal of time seeking to figure out when the need for change outweighs The Chaos Factor. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), from right, strives to be a better father to Tatiana (Ariana Neal) days before a transit officer guns him down.

Stalled at ‘Fruitvale’ ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

I

n the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal, the Sundance hit “Fruitvale Station” has a whole new layer of tragic relevance, as its central figure, real-life police-brutality victim Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), is eerily similar to slain teenager Trayvon Martin. The social-injustice parallels at play make “Frutivale” an uncommonly topical film, and that it stands as a resonant conversation starter is a plus. But topicality can’t fully make up for overall shoddy and schmaltzy filmmaking, which ultimately undermines the incendiary issues at hand. Grant was a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who, in the wee hours of New Year’s Day 2009, was mortally wounded by a transit officer amid a scuffle at the titular train stop. His death sparked a national discussion about racial profiling, made all the more potent by the fact that multiple commuters recorded the incident on their smartphones. But debut writer/director Ryan Coogler, who hails from Grant’s neighborhood, doesn’t bother to explore the weight of these larger discussions. His aim is to get at the heart of the person behind the politics, but the problem is, he fails to carve out a plausible man. Though played with terrific conviction by breakout star Jordan, Grant, depicted on the last day of his life, is developed in all the wrong ways, in a film that’s startlingly manipulative in terms of humanizing the marginalized and misunderstood. All of Grant’s flaws, from pot dealing and former prison time to anger issues and tough-guy lingo, register as superficial. What’s left is a barrage of cheap and largely conjecture-based ploys for viewer sym-

pathy, including a series of banal phone calls to loved ones, a flashback teeming with typical hard-assed “virtues,” and scenes with Oscar’s young daughter that, unfortunately, see their sincerity dashed out by Coogler’s fatal lack of restraint. “Fruitvale” cloyingly forces us to admire Grant, and in doing so, reduces his story to the evening-news sentiments of countless killed statistics’ loved ones, thus unwittingly fueling the blind stereotypes that beget the deaths of the Grants and Martins of the world.

Though not Danny Boyle’s best, the techno-fied heist thriller “Trance” has all the colorful style and booming musicality you could hope to get from the director’s work, mixing the art-world panache of “The Thomas Crown Affair” with the trippy dream drama of “Inception” and sprinkling on a whole lot of Boylean flair. Starring James McAvoy and Rosario Dawson, the fast-paced film deals in memory, romance and crime, and isn’t soon forgotten. just returned from seeing one of my medical specialists. I am in my 70s so I don’t wait to get sick before I visit a doctor. I try to keep a couple of steps ahead. A typical visit is almost like some weird game. In the waiting room (which is one of the most appropriately named things there is in life), some of the anticipation almost gets the best of you. Think good thoughts. Don’t worry about your blood pressure or you will become your own self-fulfilling prophecy and up it surely will go. I am called to the examining room where I wait for about 10 minutes or so until the doctor walks through the door. He examines the results of my blood test and I wait in silent anticipation. I need all of the numbers to align with good health. I need the numbers to be orderly like the rest of my life. If just one of the indicators is off, it could mean a whole new round of tests, an entire new concern until the next visit. Young people can laugh at the desire of older Americans for their lives to be neat and orderly, but those whose lives are orderly are the ones who survive. If youths wants to understand their elders, they must understand our need for the core of our lives to make sense. Without order, life makes no sense to us. We try hard to avoid chaos, which destroys orderliness. Chaos means uncertainty and my tolerance for uncertainty diminishes greatly as time goes by. We want very much to be in control of our own lives and chaos destroys control. What I like to call “The Chaos Factor” is very high in American life today. There is chaos everywhere we look in the political upheaval around the world, in our climate and in our politics. Every time we crave order there seems to be uncertainty and in the vernacular, we don’t do uncertainty well at all. The president probably wonders why his Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare) is not all that popular, especially when most of it is not even in effect yet. The uncertainty surrounding the new health-care law is what frightens many people, even older Americans who are supposed to be affected the least by it. Even though most of us agree that our current medical system is abominable, we almost prefer abominable to uncertainty. Almost. I find that I have trouble celebrating the leaked National Security Agency information Edward Snowden provided. You would think I would be concerned by the lack of oversight (just another word for

Carol’s Pizza Dip

Sweet Sundays

W

ith all of the build up for tonight’s fifth annual Pizza Olympics, many readers may be sick and tired of seeing the word pizza. It’s an easy solution to that at-least-once-a-week dilemma of what to have for dinner. But if the concept of a whole pie sounds like too much, try downsizing with Carol McGinness’ Pizza Dip. The resident of the 2100 block of South Hancock Street includes many of the traditional pie toppings in her recipe, and accompanies it with a side of corn chips to scoop up all of the flavors. This offering also provides the perfect answer to the what-should-I-bring to-the-party question. SPR

INGREDIENTS: 8 ounces of cream cheese 14 ounce jar of pizza sauce 1/2 cup of chopped onion 1-1/2 cups of mozzarella cheese, grated 1 can (about 3/4 cups) of olives, drained and chopped 2 ounces of sliced pepperoni (approximately 11 slices), chopped Light corn chips

L

e Virtù, 1927 E. Passyunk Ave., is hosting a series of dessert classes led by pastry chef Angela Ranalli. The next one is scheduled for noon Sunday on the restaurant’s newly designed patio (weather permitting). The theme of the class will be fried desserts while the Aug. 18 session will showcase grilled desserts. Tickets are $65 per person. Reservations are required. For more information, call 215-2715626 or visit levirtu.com. SPR

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Press the cream cheese in the bottom of a 9-inch pie pan, preferably a deep one. Spread the sauce on the cream cheese and layer all of the remaining ingredients in the order listed. Bake for 25 minutes and serve with the corn chips.

The Pickled Heron ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

hen Le Bec-Fin closed last month, a floodgate of memories came over me. I savored chef Georges Perrier’s distinctive cuisine on numerous occasions. When it changed owners, I did not have the heart to walk through the door as people told me it was not worth it. As I mused about the glory days of Le Bec-Fin, I began to crave French fare. Bastille Day was fast approaching, so I surfed the Web and perused the Zagat Guide for inspiration. I happened upon The Pickled Heron, a small, cash-only BYOB carved from a town house just like the original Le BecFin. Edward and I have driven by it several times, and since the restaurant offers French food, I was game to try it. The dining room features bright tangerine-colored walls, white linen and colorful artwork created by local artists. We brought along a sauvignon blanc and a bottle of Côtes du Rhône. Our delightful server placed our white wine in an ice bucket as Edward and I discussed the small menu. The Pickled Heron does not serve classic French fare, but there is a hint of its technique and style. I began with a salad of baby greens ($9) while Edward decided on an appetizer of tomatoes with homemade mozzarella ($12). My salad consisted of a small mound of overdressed baby arugula, a few sliced radishes and bits of mild cheese. The salad fell flat because it lacked seasoning and was doused with too much olive oil. I could not detect any lemon juice or vin-

egar. The French love their radishes, so I hoped they would shine here. Local tomatoes are in season. We expected thick slices of red, ripe, juicy tomatoes with fresh mozzarella and basil. This starter featured multi-colored baby heirloom tomatoes, a few small slices of mild mozzarella and a hint of fresh basil topped with olive oil. Unfortunately, the tomatoes were quite tart. Baby heirlooms are sometimes quite acidic and require herbs, a hearty cheese and classic vinaigrette to tame their flavor. Suffice to say, both starters were disappointing. We did enjoy the warm bread and soft butter that arrived with our appetizers. When I saw a dish with duck sausage ($24) on the menu, my heart and taste buds headed to France. Two slices of boneless duck breast were coated in a thick batter and either baked in the oven or pan roasted. It was difficult to discern the cooking method. The batter was a golden brown and crumbled as I cut into it. Duck should be served medium to medium-rare. This version was slightly overcooked. It also lacked seasoning. The sausages, on the other hand, were uncommonly tasty and filled with the flavor of fresh garlic and herbs. Small half-moon slices were mixed into ratatouille, the Southern France casserole made with zucchini, yellow squash and tomatoes. I am not a huge fan of ratatouille, but at least the vegetables were not a bit overcooked. My plate also contained two rectangles of a savory cake-like confection made with chicpea flour. It was akin to polenta in texture. I liked that it was creamy inside, and properly seared on the outside. Restaurant Review:

Edward’s lamb ($25) fared better than the duck. Several boneless slices were roasted medium-rare and set upon a firstrate risotto redolent with the flavor and color of fresh mint. The nicely seasoned and very tender lamb married well with the creamy risotto that spread out on the plate. Batons of seedless cucumber were scattered on the meat after they received a quick braise. Minted cucumbers are a French classic. In all, we enjoyed this entrée. Local blueberries are in the market, so I could not pass up homemade blueberry cake with vanilla ice cream ($6). I make blueberry pound cake in the summertime, so we were surprised to see a cute eye-appealing confection shaped like a cupcake. It was not a bit sweet and the ice cream added a rich flavor that we enjoyed. = Very Good

The Pickled Heron has promise. Service was excellent. Our server kept the corks so we could tote home our wine, filled our glasses without asking and gave us fresh silverware with each course. I just wish the menu featured classic French fare with a modern twist. Two-and-a-half tips of the toque to The Pickled Heron. SPR

Stateside’s Roasted Zucchini

A

t just 23 years old, Elijah Milligan filled the executive chef role four months ago at Stateside, 1536 E. Passyunk Ave.

Chef Elijah Milligan Stateside

Owner: Bill Bonaforte Opened November 2011 1536 E. Passyunk Ave. 215-551-2500 statesidephilly.com

Milligan, who has spent almost a decade in the food industry, has quickly worked his way up, beginning at his step father’s West Philly-based eatery, Just To Serve You, at age 14 as a utility person. The native of 23rd and Wharton streets played on Samuel S. Fels High School’s basketball team, but chose to enroll at JNA Institute of Culinary Arts, 1212 S. Broad St., instead of pursuing a sports career. He worked at multiple top restaurants simultaneously, such as Parc, Distrito and Le Bec-Fin while in school, and continued the trend upon graduating. When George Sabatino, Stateside’s former chef, announced his departure, others threw his name into consideration. Interviewing the day before Sabatino left and taking his place in the kitchen five days later without a menu ready, he soon devised the direction of the restaurant that continues to have a smallplate focus, with options such as

Roasted Zucchini. “Treating [the ingredients] in the right way but a different way that people are not used to seeing,” the Germantown resident who aims to relocate near East Passyunk Avenue said of his approach to creating “upscale, comfort neighborhood food.”

ith his charges needing one more victory to clinch the Stanley Cup, Flyers’ coach Fred Shero made use of his penchant for posting pithy chalkboard messages May 19, 1974 by writing “Win today, and we walk together forever.” Courtesy of their 1-0 Game 6 home triumph over the Boston Bruins, the Broad Street Bullies and their leader indeed achieved immortality and would further their legacy by cutting down the Buffalo Sabres to repeat as champions. For those feats and other contributions, Shero earned enshrinement in the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Builders category July 9, nearly 23 years after succumbing to stomach cancer. “I love the news and just wish he were here to enjoy the honor,” Girard Estate resident Don Rancinelli, who attended the decisive duel against the Bruins as a 12-year-old, said. “With so many other people from those glory days already in, I have to wonder what delayed his date with destiny.” “There’s no sense looking back as to why it didn’t happen sooner because today’s a happy day to celebrate the fact that a guy that deserves it immensely has finally been elected to the Hall of Fame,” Comcast-Spectacor Chairman and ’88 inductee Ed Snider, who founded the franchise 47 years ago and installed Shero as its third coach in ’71, said. “It’s a great day for the Philadelphia Flyers.” Shero becomes the organization’s eighth member to merit distinction in the Torontobased facility, with all but 2011 selection Mark Howe having assisted the Cup runs. One of five feted figures in this year’s class, the Winnipeg, Manitoba product garnered 308 regular-season wins in his seven-season stint guiding the Orange and Black and added 48 playoff victories — both of which rank as franchise bests. His 1973-’74 squad scored the first championship for an expansion club, and its success helped him to claim the inaugural Jack Adams Award as the top head coach. Being affiliated with firsts seemed to come naturally to Shero, who pioneered the hiring of assistant coaches, the promotion of in-season strength training, the analysis of film and the execution of opponent-specific strategies, or systems, while also being among the initial advocates for game-day morning skates. Those innovations allowed

prayer to the holy spirit

Holy Spirit, You who make me see everything and who shows me the way to reach my ideals, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You, who are in all the instances of my life with me, I, in this short dialogue want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones. Pray this prayer three consecutive days straight without asking for your wish. After the third day your wish will be granted. Promise to publish your dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted.
