Who’s making a difference?

The third annual Difference Makers issue will be hitting doorsteps this fall. Just like the last two years, the South Philly Review is seeking nominations from its loyal readers.

Less than half of the 8.5 million eligible Pennsylvania voters turned out on election day in 2010. Choosing the next governor and senator was apparently not important enough to rouse our voters from in front of their TV sets. By Tom Cardella

Chaos on wheels

To the Editor: There is an exception to every rule. Scofflaw bicycle riders in Philadelphia insist on riding on the sidewalk, riding recklessly in the street, running red lights, going in the wrong direction, turning without signaling, carrying a baby with one hand while trying to steer the bike with the other, texting while riding, wearing headphones, etc. I’ve seen them ride past the [3rd District] police station, 11th and Wharton streets. There are parked squad cars with police inside and on patrol and nobody bats an eye. If you were to sit in my favorite bar at Ninth and Washington by the window with a calculator, you could calculate at least $1,000 in potential fines an hour after 11 a.m. It should never be more dangerous for a toddler to play on the sidewalk than it is to cross the street. I would like to form a pedestrian coalition and march hand-in-hand on Washington Avenue from the Delaware River, going west on both sides of the streets to Broad Street and north to City Hall, carrying a banner saying “close the bicycle sidewalk super highways once and for all in our birthday suits. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion. I could be right. William Prince South Philadelphia

Legacy still intact To the Editor: The Freeh Report indicates the names of Gary Schultz, Tim Curley, Graham Spanier and Joe Paterno for not coming forth in the Jerry Sandusky investigation. Major points have been missed. Paterno’s responsibility of reporting the actions to Curley and Schultz were within his responsibility as the football coach. No one has looked at Gov. Tom Corbett, who had a police report on his desk in 1998 stating Sandusky’s violent act against a young man. And he did nothing — this came up again in 2001 and he still did nothing. He failed at the very beginning, which allowed these heinous acts to continue. No one wants to penalize Corbett — yet the desires from individuals to remove everything about Paterno from Penn State are ludicrous. He was the head coach for 46 years. His accomplishments were as an educator first and a football coach second. He was

a molder of men — yet there are now polls on TV asking should Paterno’s statue be removed from campus? I am a 78-year-old senior and have read every book written about Paterno and the many academic all-Americans that graduated under his tutelage. He was a staunch supporter of minorities during his reign, yet these knownothings that are polled do not have the slightest idea what JoePa was all about. Unfortunately this one misstep by Paterno has tarnished his reputation. The players who played for him and the students that saw him and spoke to him as he walked every morning from his home to his office will remember. I hope he can rest in peace knowing so many loved and admired him. Joe Cirella South Philadelphia

Angered by their silence To The Editor: In regards to the Jerry Sandusky molestation case, I am not overly surprised by the surfaced information. I am a published author of 207 books, of which, 120 are published through AuthorHouse publishing company. At least 50 percent of my writings pertain to the

prevalence of apathy in our society today. There is no excuse for this situation to have gone on as long as it has, considering the valuable knowledge that the two janitors held secret for years. In my opinion, Joe Paterno’s lack of unveiling Sandusky’s horrific and unholy acts to the proper authorities, is nothing compared to the negligence of two janitors who actually witnessed the molestation of a defenseless child. The fear of losing their jobs seemed to outweigh the life and well-being of innocent children. I could never have watched a grown man performing unspeakable activity without intervening. I would rather stand in line to receive my meals for the homeless as Rev. Brian Jenkins administered them to my family and me. I believe that the janitors should be prosecuted along with those who were privy to Sandusky’s criminal activity. The board of trustees fired Paterno, but they should have done the same to the janitors who, according to testimonies, witnessed the crimes. My heart goes out to the victims of Sandusky’s abuse and their families. Barbara Ann Mary Mack Southwest Philadelphia Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

wo men were fired upon on a stoop while another was caught in the crossfire July 12. Police responded to the 1400 block of South 22nd Street for a person with a gun and a male down on the highway at 12:12 a.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Upon circling the block, police encountered a 28-year-old exiting a home on the block with a bloody towel over the left side of his face. He was sitting on his front step while another 28-year-old walked out of the door, Tolliver said. A sedan with tinted windows pulled up in front of the dwelling and the driver’s side window went down as an unknown individual pointed a black handgun out of it. The two men fled inside as three to six shots were fired. One man suffered a shot to his left ear and cheek as he turned toward the door. The other was struck in the right calf and crawled inside. The vehicle fled north on 22nd Street. Police transported the pair to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Tolliver said. A private vehicle transported a third

victim, a 30-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his right thigh, to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. It was unclear where he was when he was wounded. Detectives recovered ballistics evidence at the scene, Tolliver said. There were no suspects or a motive at press time.

EDUCATION GRANT continued from page 1 tering an enriched future for area children heading their respective agendas. “I was elated when hearing the news,” Loretta Crea, Sunrise’s founder and chief financial officer said Monday. “Continued support for youngsters will open even more doors and really benefit everyone.” The resident of Second and Moore streets established Sunrise in 1999, relying on certified teachers to craft an after school mixture of guidance, homework help and tutoring for underachieving students. Along with bolstering their mastery of traditional academics, pupils have come from Edward Bok High School, 1901 S. Ninth St.; Eliza B. Kirkbride, 1501 S. Seventh St.; Francis Scott Key, 2230 S. Eighth St.; St. Nicholas of Tolentine, 913 Pierce St., which will become St. Anthony of Padua next year; and Southwark, 1835 S. Ninth St., schools to deepen their knowledge of arts and crafts, computers, culture and sports. A twomonth camp for kindergartners through eighth-graders ensures a safe summer, and an assortment of career learning options and clubs keeps older pupils mindful of postsecondary opportunities. “It is so vital to have chances to evolve, and we’ve been fortunate to witness tremendous strides,” Crea, whose site’s secondary work program has landed jobs for 143 teenagers, including enrollees at The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., and Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., said. Having claimed the same grant early last decade, the Pennsport dweller applied in April for another endowment. Choosing 21 Philadelphia hopefuls among 61 awardees, the state allotted Sunrise $328,429 from a $19.8 million total. Considering South Philly’s burgeoning migrant population in constructing her proposal, Crea mentioned the influence of Asian ethnicities has left many arrivals feeling disconnected as they attempt to remain loyal to their heritage while knowing they must adapt to newness. “It can be frightening for them to find direction,” the advocate, whose East Passyunk Crossing site recently completed a pilot credit recovery program for seniors at Bok; Horace Furness, 1900 S. Third St., and South Philadelphia, 2101 S. Broad St., high schools, said. “Therefore, we are going to intensify outreach to middle school students, who are already going through a ton biologically and emotionally.” To decrease their timidity, Crea also is looking to open up classes for migrant parents and, to counter a dearth of scientific interest, will add the Franklin Institute as a partner. “Not enough people are becoming doctors or engineers,” she said. “Many future

figures could be right here in South Philadelphia.” FRANCIS CARNEY, EXECUTIVE director of United Communities, a Lower Moyamensing entity that has aimed to strengthen its surroundings through pre-school and after-school programs and job readiness and training classes, among numerous aids, since its merger with the 112-year-old Houston Community Center in 1969, joins Crea in having science on the brain. He submitted a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant application in January. “The news certainly came as a plus,” he said. “We plan to work to enhance the sci-

ence curriculum at Furness.” Carney noted these grant recipients tend to focus on middle schools, but his organization, a member of the Federation of Neighborhood Centers, is electing to advance its three-year relationship with the Pennsport school. Looking to connect with 60 youngsters, United Communities is touting science, technology, engineering and math in fulfilling its first such grant. “We already have scientific aspects, like radio and video clubs, so we will just need to increase the analysis of what processes actually occur,” Carney said. he third annual Difference Makers issue will be hitting doorsteps this fall. Just like the last two years, the South Philly Review is seeking nominations from its loyal readers. Who are the Difference Makers in your community? Who are the people who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist others? Here is your chance to tell us their stories. They can be teachers, volunteers, coaches, doctors or any other profession. All entries will be reviewed by our selection committee, with the best ones being profiled in our very special Oct. 11 Fall Guide. Those who were

selected previously are not eligible. In 250 words or fewer, tell us the story of your worthy candidate who resides or works in South Philadelphia and send it our way via e-mail, fax or regular mail. Photos are not required. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 27. SPR

hawking produce they had grown at a formerly vacant lot at Eighth and Mercy streets. The Urban Sustainability Leadership Academy members are running Teens 4 Good, the federation’s agricultural venture whose inspirational components have helped 93 percent of the proprietors to graduate. “That’s far above the school district’s average,” Jesus Soto, United Communities director for the Furness Out-of-SchoolTime program, said. Last year’s on-time graduation rate hit 61 percent, according to the district’s Office of Accountability. Mayor Michael Nutter has stated a desire for an 80-percent mark by 2014, so United Communities staffers are zeroing in on helping 12to 18-year-olds, with the younger students coming through after-school interaction at Southwark, D. Newlin Fell, 900 W. Oregon Ave., and George Sharswood, 2300 S. Second St., schools. Though the age bracket covers sixth through 12th grades, the organization has decided to call on its $96,000 in funds to benefit Furness, which will welcome Daniel Peou, former principal at George W. Childs School, 1599 Wharton St., as its new leader. “The intent of this grant is to fund the establishment and sustainability of community learning centers that provide additional educational services to students in high-poverty and low-performing schools,” Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis said in a statement on the department’s website, which noted the state wishes to “enhance academic opportunities for at-risk students.” The use of “at-risk” led United Communities’ director of operations Karla Howard to analyze the term’s sweeping nature. “All children are at-risk in such times,” she said of communities’ instability. According to the Southeast Youth Collaborative, a William Penn Foundation initiative operating out of the Houston Center and targeting youngsters residing south of Market Street and east of Broad Street, 22 percent of youths speak a language other than English and 49 percent of families with children ages 12 to 17 live in poverty. Because of those statistics, United Communities aims to devise a safe haven for children and parents, with continued advocacy including a parent council and discussions on preventing compulsive gambling and substance abuse. “Our 21st Century grant will help Furness, but we’ll lump together resources to further our overall outreach,” Soto said. “Grants have a way of inspiring more creativity, and this one’s science emphasis should lead to new ideas.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. ART SANCTUARY continued from page 1 cital credits on her résumé, she emerged as the choice after an 18-month search, receiving another boost from her most recent role as Temple University’s assistant dean for institutional advancement for the College of Education. As that position and key assignments with the PNC Financial Services Group helped her to foster community relationships and to secure copious funds, she offered Cary and Art Sanctuary board members and stakeholders an irresistible blend of talent, passion and financial acumen. “As I’ve gotten to know Art Sanctuary, what really excites me most about the organization is its enormous potential,” Gay said of the organization Cary founded in 1998 as the North Philadelphia-based Church of the Advocate. “Everything it’s doing is excellent and has the potential to be more deeply embedded in Philadelphia.” Though her brainchild, which she relocated to South Philly two years ago, has earned a reputation as a haven for AfricanAmerican creative endeavors, Cary has never coveted insularity, and her selection will advocate for expansive interest in her employer’s creed. “I know the idea of having black art as the basic foundation for connecting where everything is,” Gay said. “I believe it is a missed opportunity if people of all ethnicities don’t see their connection to black art, and Art Sanctuary can actually be that bridge.” A member of the School Reform Commission and a senior lecturer in creative writing at the University of Pennsylvania, Cary, the 2003 Philadelphia Award winner, used New York’s Rochester Arts & Lectures as a model when devising Art Sanctuary, hoping to give fellow Philadelphians occasions to interact with esteemed creators. The 55-year-old, whose local ties include receiving piano instruction at Settlement Music School, 416 Queen St., had overseen the lauded organization with input from a compact staff but realized a new voice could propel its outreach, which board of directors chair Mellanie Lassiter said has increased by 15,000 community members over the last year. “For the first time, I am feeling a little sad,” Cary said. “However, I know Valerie Gay will advance Art Sanctuary’s mission and remind everyone that to make excellent art, culture trumps strategy.” Gay, learning of the executive director post in February and receiving great news in May, relayed her reactions and aspirations to 30 arts enthusiasts. “When I got the call, I was absolutely floored,” she said of assuming the top duties for the body she often assisted at open houses. “The doors are open, and I am honored and humbled to lead Art Sanctuary.”

GAY JOINS THE site during what has amounted to a very successful year. Art Sanctuary is using “Growing from Good to Great” as its theme and has already added three major successes to its annals. Its winter housing of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program’s “Behind These Walls: Visions of Courage, Beacons of Hope” exhibition celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Albert M. Greenfield African-American Iconic Images Collection, and April’s Black Professionals Got Talent event met with acclaim. Supreme recognition came April 23, when the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation declared it a Knight Arts Challenge victor, allotting it $100,000 to finalize Hip H’opera. Through the efforts of Art Sanctuary, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Opera Company of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Young Playwrights, the endeavor, conceived in ’07, has used artists to teach workshops on the aesthetics and history of hip-hop and opera in seven institutions, including Edwin M. Stanton School, 1700 Christian St., and South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St. Librettists worked on student pieces the next year, with pupils first performing the output as poetry then in musical form with an intergenerational chorus, opera singers, a pianist and a string quartet. With the endowment, Art Sanctuary will take learners on field trips and engage them in supplemental work with professionals, who will craft an opera, with an autumn ’14 debut scheduled at the Kimmel Center. Gay has familiarity with the 11-yearold venue, having served as a soloist for December’s preview performance of composer Hannibal Lokumbe’s “Can You Hear God Crying?” The work, which ex-

amines the perils of incarceration, enabled Art Sanctuary to create a curriculum for teachers as part of its Reading in Concert Program. It will aim to educate a full audience Sept. 21. Along with those milestones, Gay, who formally commenced her employment Monday, will strive to make her locale’s Celebration of Black Writing Festival an even more well-attended and greatly respected venture. The 28-year-old opportunity for reverence, which Center City bookstore owner Larry Robin began as a Black History Month writing conference, allows professional and aspiring writers and artists to discuss their work through panels and workshops. The festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award has honored renowned scribes such as Chinua Achebe, Nikki Giovanni, Terry McMillan and Sonia Sanchez in past years. The celebration bears special meaning to Gay, as many of its events occur on Temple’s campus, but every aspect of her new identity figures to excel, as she is planning to engross herself in bettering Art Sanctuary’s status. “We are certainly at a very good point in our progression,” she said. “I am going to welcome every bit of my new responsibilities.” As her time with Temple and PNC forged strong ties with the School District of Philadelphia, she plans to broaden Art Sanctuary’s interaction with youngsters, which she already sees as a hallmark. “South Philadelphia’s arts identity is strong,” she said, “but nothing is wrong with being stronger.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Property tax addressed

T

he City of Philadelphia has pushed back its Actual Value Initiative until tax year 2014, therefore, the Homestead Exemption application deadline — previously July 31 — has been extended to Nov. 15. Those already submitted will be processed for ’14. Homeowners who have not submitted a form to qualify for the tax-relief program, will receive one via mail by September. For this year, tax year ’13, the City will use values from tax year ’11 to calculate bills, with adjustments for subsequent improvements, demolition and destruction. For the approximately 25,000 properties that will have an assessment change, this year, the City will mail a notice by Sept. 17 prior to the bill’s December distribution. Next year’s new value notices will be distributed in February. For more information, visit opa.phila.gov.

After a decade at the helm of Diversified Community Services, a Passyunk Square resident leaves her post in the wake of positive change in the Point Breeze area.

By Jess Fuerst Review Contributor

“E

ver since I was a kid [I’ve wanted to do this work]. I couldn’t play baseball, so social work was the next best thing,” Cheryl Weiss, a 30-year resident of 11th and Federal streets, said. Weiss, who clocked in her last day two weeks ago as the executive director of Diversified Community Services, 1529 S. 22nd St., a nonprofit multipurpose human service agency, has been an active agent of positive social change in the community for many years. At Diversified, she oversaw many programs that bettered locals. “There are some specific achievements during my tenure,” Weiss said. “Our early-childhood education achieved national accreditation and there are only about 10 percent of all early-childhood programs that have such designations. It speaks to the high-quality standards for the education of pre-K children.” Education, however, was not her only focus. “We had a couple buildings on South Broad Street, like Broad

P h o t o s b y J a m e s Dav i s

Lifestyles and Federal, and we decided to sell and move into the heart of the neighborhood and built a brand new administrative center on Point Breeze Avenue,” she said of the 2007 relocation. “It was the first new major piece of construction in years — both for the agency, a new big undertaking, and also it represented new construction in Point Breeze.” As a resident and community leader in the area for more than three decades, Weiss has bared witness to the multitude of changes. Though there are still strides to be made, in her decade with the nonprofit, she has overseen great leaps forward. “There were a couple different issues. The first issue that clearly grabbed my attention was the high rate of violence, shooting and murders, particularly among young people. It was just devastating. Almost weekly you could hear about one,” she said. “We became very involved working with police and other community organizations to try to figure out solutions that lead us to a pilot for the city, the first ever curfew center. “We’ve had a number of other violenceprevention programs all aimed at kids, teenagers. While violence in Point Breeze has persisted — I think it is still one of the top three crime rates in the city — the level has come down very much here.” Weiss still feels passionately about proj-

ects that Diversified has on its slate. She will assist in finishing out a few initiatives, but felt that it was time for someone else to shake things up. “I thought that 10 years was a good, long time to be the leader of an organization and it was time to move on and pursue other opportunities,” Weiss, who handed over the reins to Otis Bullock Jr. July 9, said. “I did the work really flat out. I thought doing something a little different, something a little different pace was what I was ready for. “I have a feeling organizations grow with new leadership, new blood.” A BOSTON, MASS. native Weiss was interested in social work and community interfacing from the beginning. “I like the engagement and working with people and trying to solve problems,” Weiss said. “And figuring out interventions that might make a difference for people on some scale above a one-on-one.” After completing an undergraduate degree at The University of Massachusetts in Amherst, she was ready to get a higherlevel degree in her chosen field. “Actually somebody in my family knew about [the master’s program at Temple University]. They had the kind of program that would be appealing to me — one more focused on community organization and

planning rather than direct service, which is my orientation,” Weiss, who received her master’s in 1973, said. “So I came here and fell into some wonderful jobs here.” Upon graduation, she began a career in social service in Philly, starting with managing a large-scale runaway shelter. Throughout her career she also was involved with beginning one of the first fuel funds in the country, which aided those without the means to pay utility bills. Over this time, Weiss has come to make Philly home. “I just find it very comfy [in South Philly]. It’s easy to walk to downtown and obviously in the 30-plus years I’ve been here I’ve seen a lot of changes take place,” Weiss said. “It’s always been a nice selection of shopping on Ninth [Street] and restaurants, public transportation and housing and neighbors, really great neighbors.” Her neighbors also are a part of her profession, and while she has come to count on them, she knows there is always more to be done. “I think there is some level of engagement with neighbors and the work DCS does, but there is always the opportunity for more — individuals to volunteer, to help raise money, which is always a good thing, and for people to participate,” Weiss said. Point Breeze is a very different place than it was when Weiss began her term at

Diversified. The issues facing the incoming leadership will be old and new at the same time. “Another big issue facing Point Breeze now is the gentrification and revitalization that’s happening around the periphery of the neighborhood. We launched the early stages of a community visioning process. The purpose here is to bring disparate elements, segments of the community — young people, African-American, white, professional, non [-professional], retirees, longtime residents, newcomers — to a table and say, ‘OK, how do we make this work for all of us?’ Gentrification at the same time is inclusive of people in the neighborhood for a long time and the newcomers. We need a common agenda,” she said Leaving these new issues in good hands, Weiss hopes she also leaves a positive legacy at Diversified. In departing, she sees bright things on the horizon. “I hope the new leadership at DCS proceeds with the community vision plan. It’s more than just a program, it’s a communityorganizing effort to bring people together,” Weiss said. “What are some things we can be doing together — all of us, some of us — to see that move forward and get to that end point. That would be something.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

Stop Philly from voting

L

ess than half of the 8.5 million eligible Pennsylvania voters turned out on election day in 2010. Choosing the next governor and senator was apparently not important enough to rouse our voters from in front of their TV sets. Voters in our state are smart enough to know when you leave your popcorn unattended, the likelihood is it won’t be there when you get back (especially if it’s Moose Munch). As you may know by now, Republicans won both key elections in 2010. Tom Corbett became governor. You may have not seen Corbett much. He spends a good deal of his time dismantling public education. His motto should be “Waste a mind, save a dollar.” Those who did vote chose Pat Toomey as senator. Toomey’s voting record is considered very progressive — if the year were 1912. Republicans all across the country noticed a trend, especially here in Pennsylvania. Hold the vote down in the big cities and Republican chances of winning go up. Low voter turnout has become a cornerstone of Republican strategy. If you can’t get enough people to vote against their own interests, at least you might be able to get them to not vote at all. The question is, how can Republicans discourage voting without resorting to fire hoses and a poll tax? A Republican think tank — The Calvin Coolidge Institute for Progress — came up with the idea that the option not to vote is true democracy in action. The Coolidge Institute devised the following strategy: Educate minorities (otherwise known as likely Democrat voters) not to vote. Spread the word that in some foreign countries with strange sounding names, people are forced to vote. Make them think not voting is not only a precious right, it’s a symbol of freedom. Unfortunately, the reaction in minority communities was swift, unfavorable, and extremely profane. The Coolidge Institute wound up closing down from a lack of funding by the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson. A new approach was needed. That’s when someone came up with the idea of voter-ID laws. Polls found a significant number of minority voters could be disenfranchised if voter identification were required. Republicans were wary. They had been burned before trying to get the wrong kind of peo-

ple not to vote. A light bulb lit. Someone on Fox News posed the question — how did a Kenyan-born socialist without an American birth certificate ever get elected president of the United States the last time around? Simple. The election must have been stolen by voter fraud. There is a bit of a problem with using voter fraud as the excuse for why we need voter ID. According to the Brennan Center for Justice website, voter ID fraud is less likely to occur than someone getting struck by lightning going to the polls. But then as one cynic put it, who ever lost an election letting facts get in the way? Voter-ID laws have now been enacted in many states of the union. Corbett signed a voter ID law into effect in Pennsylvania in March. It is estimated that about 18 percent of the voters in Philadelphia still do not have the proper voter ID to vote this November. How important is keeping down the Philadelphia voter turnout? One prominent state Republican slipped and mentioned the voter-ID law could hand the state to the Republicans and Mitt Romney. He has been banished to the Island of Elba (say hello to Napoleon). I hate to rain on the Republican prospect of a victory parade in Pennsylvania, at least until I hand out umbrellas.Yeah, you can require non-drivers to get their ID at a PennDOT office a little difficult to get to since they don’t drive. You can also confuse those folks who were born out of state, especially in a non-state like Puerto Rico. But even if you deny all 18 percent of these folks the right to vote, is that really a sure thing? Who’s to say our voterID law won’t lead to counterfeiting of ID cards? Think about how many underage girls get into bars all of the time. You go into a bar down the Shore, the average age of the girls clutching a Miller Lite is about 16-and-a-half. I think if you want to be really sure to put Pennsylvania in the Romney column, you have to get tough. Here are some suggestions for holding down the vote in Philly. All males must wear a suit, a tie and a dress shirt with French cuffs. Rationale: If you can have a dress code at a fancy restaurant, why not proper decor at the polls? Real reason: How many non-Romney voters wear French cuffs? If this doesn’t knock out almost all of the non-Romney vote, add a requirement that the suit has to have pin stripes. All voters must be able to quote selected passages from Ayn Rand. All voters must be able to use the phrase “government takeover” in a simple sentence. All voters must be able to identify the major problems in Pennsylvania (Hint — environmentalists who oppose fracking, public unions, higher education). You live in the Cradle of Liberty. Please don’t vote. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

‘Beast’ packs thunderous roar

Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) shares a private moment with her father (Dwight Henry).

By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

N

o other 2012 film can boast the raw originality of “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” Benh Zeitlin’s marvelously textured and beautifully realized bayou fantasy, which sees the world through the kaleidoscopic lens of a child at a crossroads. Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) is a 6-year-old girl raised like a boy by her ailing father (Dwight Henry), whose illness coincides with a Katrinalike storm and a calamitous ecological allegory, which thunders forth in the form of prehistoric monsters. Along with documentary-style details that offer access to a shrouded microcosm, Zeitlin weaves these pieces together with near-masterful cohesion, emerging with something that feels gloriously homespun from end to end. Written by Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar, whose play “Juicy and Delicious” served as the inspiration, “Beasts” is driven by earthly philosophies and metaphors, particularly in regard to who the beasts are and how they fit into the grand scheme. Hushpuppy and her co-inhabitants of The Bathtub, the southern-Delta dreamland she calls home, are shown to possess the same animalism as the net-captured critters they consume, yet even more savage are those invading creatures and the “civilized” aid workers who venture past the levees, draining The Bathtub of its residents. Remarkably polished in all its un-polished-ness, this movie assumes a lofty perch on virtually every filmic level. It presents a realm that feels otherwise uncharted, it hinges on a poignant bond portrayed by spot-on actors, it achieves aural and visual styles that seem magically unique (even splatters of grease look like glistening fairy dust), and it manages to truly be about something — a worldly thematic distinction that

gives it long-term legs to stand on. Through it all, “Beasts” is enchantingly intimate, blessed with Hushpuppy’s guileless and half-articulate narration, and hoisted by the undercurrent of family as a necessary support. Just like the makeshift raft of debris and car parts that carries her through the flood, Hushpuppy’s upbringing is ramshackle at best, made of tough love and damaged goods. In a quest that also sends her searching for her mother, the wee heroine confides that her favorite feeling is to be lifted. It’s a feeling “Beasts” generously provides.

Alice’s Cheesy Broccoli Pockets INGREDIENTS:

1 10-ounce package of frozen chopped broccoli, cooked according to package directions 2 teaspoons of olive oil 1 garlic clove, minced 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, shredded 1/3 cup of Parmesan, grated 2 jarred roasted peppers, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon of fresh oregano, chopped, or 1 teaspoon of dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper 1 16-ounce package of frozen bread dough, thawed

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

In a medium skillet, heat the oil over low. Add the garlic and sauté for two minutes. Add the broccoli and cook, stirring until the moisture has evaporated, for about three minutes. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. In a medium bowl, combine the broccoli mixture, mozzarella, Parmesan, peppers, oregano, salt and pepper. On a lightly floured surface, divide the dough into eight pieces. Roll out each section to form a six-inch circle. Spoon an equal amount of the broccoli mixture in the center. Fold the dough over the filling to form a half circle. Press the edges with a fork to seal and prick a few holes in the pocket tops. Place the pockets on greased baking sheets. Bake for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Sawatdee By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

omething peculiar happened last week when I telephoned an Asian restaurant in South Philadelphia to find out if they accept credit cards, etc. The phone rang about 10 times when finally an automatic voice said the mailbox is full. This was odd. The restaurant is dine-in, but also offers delivery. I did a bit more sleuthing and found a second telephone number for the same place. Again I heard the same message. I dialed several times and heard the same response. Time to go to Plan B. Edward and I drove down South Street and decided to dine at Sawatdee, a Thai restaurant we passed many times. The pretty corner restaurant is resplendent in green. Succulent plants and tall orchids dot the room. Highly polished wood tables are set with white china and sage green linen napkins folded to resemble a rosebud. Sawatdee is BYOB. We brought a bottle of Harmony Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, which marries well with spicy Thai fare. Here’s the problem. It was a hot summer night. The restaurant is air-conditioned although you would never know it. There are ceiling fans whirling over head but the front door was open. I’m not a physicist, but I do know all the nasty hot air, bus fumes, flies and critters flying about will be sucked into the restaurant. It was most uncomfortable. A tall glass of ice turned to water within minutes. I enjoy Thai flavors because the spices are M a rc o n i / Pa c ke r Pa r k

usually in balance. It is a visually pretty cuisine that makes use of colors and textures. This is where Sawatdee needs work. One of the specials was a shrimp dish ($10) prepared with chili sauce. We received five small, lightly-floured panseared shrimp sitting naked on the plate. They packed a bit of heat, but I wondered why they sat alone save for a miniscule scattering of thinly sliced scallions. The best dish of the night and a first for us were por-piah sod ($7.95). These were long, plump spring rolls fashioned with soft, cool noodle-like wrappers filled with scrumptious real crabmeat chunks, Chinese sausage slices, scrambled egg bits, tofu, bean sprouts and fragrant cucumber sticks set on a pool of tamarind glaze. The logs were sliced into eight portions and since the wrapper was so thin and transparent, the rolls appeared striped. The sausage was red and the thin peel on the cucumber was green. The balance of flavors and textures made this one of the most memorable appetizers in recent memory. From the salads, we selected yum-talay ($9.95), which was a bit disappointing. I love cool seafood salads in Italian restaurants. This one consisted of a few lettuce leaves and slices of red onion that served as the base for small shrimp, squid, mussels out of their shell, lemongrass and cilantro that sat on a pool of chili-lime dressing. The seafood lacked flavor and I found the shrimp and squid overcooked. Ped rard-prik ($16.95) would have tied

with the spring rolls as a most memorable dish save for the fact the duck was a tad overcooked. The entrée consisted of onehalf duck presented with tasty, crispy skin with baby bok choy and napped in a chili tamarind sauce. As we always do, Edward ate the leg and I tucked into the breast meat. It should have been moist and succulent although the spot-on sauce helped perk the dish up. Unfortunately for us, the pork in padsee-ewe-moo ($11.95) was drastically overcooked. This stir-fry dish was prepared with ribbons of flat noodles, which I liked, eggs, Chinese broccoli and garlic in a black soy sauce. This entrée was totally bland. Large mounds of perfectly steamed fragrant jasmine rice came with both entrées.

Service was excellent. Two kind servers took great care of us and patrons inside the restaurant and those who decided to swat flies hovering around a hot pot of steamed fish outside. The spring rolls were tops. I would return to Sawatdee and order a succession of appetizers and soup for dinner. One-and-a-half tips of the toque to Sawatdee. SPR

Phyllis Stein-Novack Food Columnist

everal months ago, while the weather was still cool, I wrote a column about the universal appeal of meatless Mondays. Chefs and home cooks set aside the beginning of the work week to prepare simple, tasty meatless meals. It’s most welcome in our home. Our rules deviate a bit: I may serve fish and usually include eggs, cheese and butter. While leafing through my cookbooks I came upon a recipe for Gazpacho in “Mediterranean Food, French Country Cooking and Summer Cooking,” a three-books-in- one volume written by Elizabeth David with an introduction by James Beard. I found this gem in a used bookstore many years ago. Her first book, “Mediterranean Food,” was published in 1950. David, who died in 1992 at 78, is considered by many to be Britain’s finest cookery writer. She left England as a young woman and traveled to Greece, Italy, Spain and of course France where she lived for many years. She also kept a home in London. According to Beard, who was a longtime friend of David, her magazine articles and first book introduced the British to somewhat exotic dishes filled with Mediterranean sunshine at a time when Britain was still recovering from the gray, post-World War II days of austerity. Her recipe for Gazpacho in “Summer Cooking,” intrigued me. There are many recipes for this cool Spanish soup and I could not wait to try it. Seek out David’s marvelous books in used bookstores or online. I am not sure whether her books are still in print. She has a glorious, sensuous way with her pen and the results are also glorious and sensuous, indeed. We begin our summer meatless Monday with her recipe for Gazpacho. We continue on with my favorite summer pasta, Hot Spaghetti with Raw Tomato Sauce from “Food for Friends” by Bar-

bara Kafka and finish with Summer Salad.

When ready to serve, add the ice water and blend well. Divide the Gazpacho among four cold soup bowls. Place some of the crushed ice in each bowl, add the bread cubes and eggs and serve. Serves four.

■ Gazpacho ■ Ingredients: 1 pound of red ripe tomatoes, chopped to a puree in the food processor 2 Israeli cucumbers, peeled, seeded and finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 scallions, sliced 12 pitted black olives, such as Gaeta, sliced

Note from Phyllis: You can use V-8 Juice in place of the water and substitute red, yellow or orange pepper as well.

Some might struggle with the concept of a poultry-, meat-free dinner, but famous authors Elizabeth David and Barbara Kafka have published exotic recipes capable of clearing that blah idea right off of the palate. 1 small green pepper, seeded and thinly sliced 3 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Pinch of cayenne pepper Small handful of chopped fresh basil, mint or parsley 1/2 cup of ice water About 12 small cubes of toasted bread 2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped

Directions: Place all of the ingredients except the ice water, bread cubes and eggs in a large bowl. Blend well. Cover and refrigerate until very cold. You can prepare the recipe up to this point and chill overnight.

■ Hot Spaghetti ■ with Raw Tomato Sauce Ingredients: 6 large ripe tomatoes, cored and cut into 1-inch chunks 7 tablespoons of kosher salt 1 pound of spaghetti 1/3 cup plus an additional 1/2 cup of olive oil 1-1/2 cups of red onions, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup of firmly packed chopped basil 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions: Place the tomatoes in a non-aluminum bowl. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of the salt

over them and let sit for 30 minutes. Add 4 tablespoons of the salt to boiling water, add the pasta and cook according to the package directions. Do not overcook. Add 1/3 cup of the oil to the pot with the pasta, drain in a colander and shake to remove all of the excess water. Place in a serving bowl. As the pasta cooks, drain the tomatoes and add the onions, basil, lemon juice, the 1/2 cup of oil and remaining salt and pepper. Push the hot pasta to the sides of the bowl and pour the cold sauce into the center. Serves eight as a first course, four as a main course.

■ Summer Salad ■ Ingredients: 1 large head of romaine, torn into pieces 1 large head of Boston lettuce, torn into pieces 8 ounces of roasted red peppers, cut into strips 8 ounces of marinated artichokes, cut into pieces Sprinkling of tiny capers, rinsed 1 small handful of pitted olives of choice, sliced 8 ounces of feta, cut into small cubes 1/2 cup of extra-virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons of unsweetened rice wine vinegar Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions: Place all of the salad ingredients into a large serving bowl. Toss well. In a small bowl, whisk together the oil and vinegar. Pour the dressing over the salad. Season with the salt and pepper. Serves four. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/food-anddrink/features.

3 years have passed since you left us. 3 years of sadness and pain. 3 years of wishing we had the chance to bring you back to us again. They say time is a healer; not true. In time, the pain becomes a little easier to bear but the pain we feel in our hearts is still, and always will be there. You not being here with us is a battle that we fight everyday of our lives. There is not a moment that goes by that you are not in our HEARTS or our THOUGHTS. We miss that beautiful smile of yours so very much. Thank you for giving us your beautiful daughter. Hope you are finally at peace; the peace you so deserved.

Their combined score of 66 put Gentilucci and Kite at 6-under-par and four shots off the lead after the first 18 holes. A second-round mark of 69 at Pebble Beach helped them to advance and anointed the younger swinger as the premier First Tee

cumulated 10 Champions Tour wins and has also designed numerous courses. “I was happy to learn I would be playing with Tom Kite,” Gentilucci said. “He is someone who has meant a ton to the game and a person who is all about promoting the sport.” The duo debuted July 6 at Del Monte, which at 115 years old is the oldest course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River. The site of his anxious practice session, it failed to intimidate him again, as he relied on his growing confidence in his short game, which First Tee Philadelphia program director Sean Ketchum had recently improved, to court

IN ADDITION TO his California odyssey, which also afforded him occasions to relax, including an encounter with comedian Ron White, and his Florida experience, Gentilucci also has attacked greens in South Carolina and Virginia. Eager to better all facets of his game, he plies his trade at the local First Tee Philadelphia site and its Roxborough complement at Walnut Lane Golf Club, Roman Catholic’s home course. He and his Cahillite mates enjoyed a fantastic season last year, accumulating a second-place-earning 14-1 Catholic League regular-season record. Third-place distinction in the postseason advanced them to the PIAA District 12 Championships, where they dropped the final in a playoff. “We had a phenomenal year,” Gentilucci, poised to be this campaign’s captain, said. “Now comes the hard, yet possible, task of improving.” He intends to be a fervent leader when his squad begins practices next month, desiring not only the district crown but also regional and state honors. He will look to blend ambition on the links with educational pursuits, as he is carefully considering colleges. “I will really begin to think about places soon,” he said, adding his California adventure has made him consider life as a West-Coast collegiate. No matter where he applies, he can count on a recommendation from Kite and enjoys pondering his future. “I am ready for whatever a course or a classroom brings me,” Gentilucci said. SPR

ervousness often manifests itself in trembling hands, definite hindrances to any golfer. Feeling a touch of anxiety during a July 4 practice round at Monterey, Calif.’s Del Monte Golf Course, Daniel Gentilucci rapidly regrouped and let talent trump worry. The 17-year-old senior-to-be at Center City’s Roman Catholic High School competed at the ninth Nature Valley First Tee Open July 6 through 8, uniting with esteemed professional Tom Kite for 54 holes at the aforementioned site and the lauded Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif. “There were early nerves but I knew I had to maximize the rare opportunity and produce,” Gentilucci said Tuesday from his home on the 3100 block of South 18th Street. “I just called on my composure to make it through.” The teenager has honed much of his maturity through five years at The First Tee Philadelphia, 1954 Pattison Ave. Personnel from the eight-year-old initiative, which through golf and life skills programming enriches 6- to 18-year-olds, nominated him, with selection for the Packer Park resident coming in May. He had needed to complete an intricate application packet to become the local chapter’s fourth all-time participant in the West-Coast tournament, which pairs 81 juniors with Champions Tour players. Following a two-person best ball format that tallies success by letting each member play a hole then taking the lower score, the event allows ball strikers to receive trips from accomplished peers while gaining a sense of what it might take to succeed them as golf heroes. While the other invitees needed to wait until July 5 to learn with whom they would wield their clubs, Gentilucci received a July 3 call from Tom Kite. “It was a Texas number, so I wasn’t going to pick up, but I got it on the last ring,” the birdie seeker said of accepting greetings from Kite, whom he met at 2010’s ACE Group Classic in Naples, Fla., on his initial First Tee trip. The 62-year-old Lone Star State native claimed the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, one of his 19 PGA victories and a huge stepping stone in achieving 2004 World Golf Hall of Fame enshrinement. The 1989 PGA Player of the Year has ac-

Philadelphia product to advance beyond the 36-hole test. “That gave me pride,” Gentilucci, who shot a 78 and a 75 the first two days, said. A 71, also registered at Pebble Beach, gave them a 54-hole mark of 206, 10 strokes behind the winners. “It felt great to play on the last day,” he said. “Tom really helped to create a relaxed environment where it was easy to be light and stay loose.”
