nthused about strengthening the gurative foundation of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Church, 2101 S. 28th St., Rev. Matthew Cantrell realizes bolstering the literal look of his Grays Ferry worship site must complement his quest. The fourth-year rector received significant support last week, as parishioners and volunteers tended to aesthetic and architectural repairs in preparation for October’s 100th anniversary celebration. “We believe in inclusivity and as we approach that mile-
stone, we want to convey that this can be anyone’s parish,” the religious figure said Monday at the hallowed space. “I’ve noted to the congregation that we’re like a car in decent shape yet possessing an engine that requires a jump-start. Our helpers and members certainly gave us that through their involvement.” Cantrell, who resides in Bridesburg with his wife and three sons, has noticed a need for hope and stability among Grays Ferry inhabitants and believes his building, the product of Carpatho-Russian immigrants’ enthusiasm for their faith, can offer it. Word on the Street What are your thoughts on the media coverage of the royal baby?
“I don’t think it’s too much because it is consistent with what the media does. I am not surprised with the coverage. Jonathan Olsen, 18th and Christian streets
“I really don’t care. I’m American. I saw on the news yesterday that 65 percent of Americans don’t care and only 5 percent follow closely. Dan Whateley, 13th and Mifflin streets
“People are excited because it is a royal baby, but it’s too much. I don’t really care. Latyra Noland, 12th and Morris streets

The thought factor To the Editor: I have never responded to the opinions of letter writers in the Review, no matter how much I have agreed or disagreed with them. However, I thought Tom Cardella’s piece on “The Chaos Factor (July 18) provided an interesting framework to consider the letters written by Sister Mary Paul Beierschmitt (“Concerning marriage, July 18) and Frank Cavallaro (“Racial rumblings, July 18). Tom ascribes his advancing age to his increasing reluctance in accepting uncertainty. “We want very much to be in control of our own lives and chaos destroys control, he writes. It is perfectly obvious that the inevitable drift toward civil recognition of same-sex unions and the justifiable outrage of the
Trayvon Martin murder trial, especially by those in communities of color, makes those who prefer control (whether through white privilege or religious dogma) incredibly uncomfortable. Cavallaro sees the world dichotomously— black and white, us and them — no willingness to consider the nuances that make our race-infused country so complicated. Sister Mary Paul would prefer that we all live in “obedience to scripture and the “natural law. Her views on those affected by HIV underscore Tom’s point that sometimes “we almost prefer abominable to uncertainty. In his quest to maintain order and quiet, I am impressed with Tom’s honest reflection and genuine challenge for himself to remain

open and available to accept evolutionary social change. The acknowledgment of same-sex unions will happen in our lifetime and race relations will continue to remain complex, misunderstood and quite messy, yet potentially enriching — as long as we are “willing to be disturbed, as writer Margaret J. Wheatley has explored. My hope is that well-meaning individuals like Beierschmitt and Cavallaro spend more time not knowing, and, in their natural preference for order and control, heed Cardella’s observation that they beware not to “create bogeymen, insulate themselves from the rest of society, or enmesh themselves “entirely in self-interest.

Shifted to robbery A man accepted a ride with strangers who swiped his bag before he could get in the car. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor
A
fter picking up his prescriptions, a man was robbed and dragged alongside his thieves’ car Monday. A 60-year-old man retrieved his medications at Eighth Street Pharmacy, 819 S. Eighth St., at 4:50 p.m. and started to head home southbound on Eighth when a man sitting in the driver’s seat of a latemodel silver or gray sedan with chrome wheels near Christian Street offered him a lift, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. His passenger had been inside the pharmacy while the man obtained his drugs. He accepted the offer, but when he tried to open the door, the driver grabbed his bag and drove off, briefly dragging the man, Tolliver said. The victim suffered cuts and bruises to his face, arms, legs and feet, but did not seek medical treatment. Inside the stolen bag was various medications, $23, cigarettes and laundry detergent, totaling about $100, Tolliver said. The driver was described as black, age 55; having a long black and gray beard and wearing an orange and white striped shirt. The passenger was described as black, age 51, possibly a resident of the 2000 block of South Bonsall Street and wearing a navy blue scarf and glasses with a light-colored frame. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.
McNeil, 21, of the 1500 block of Wharton Street, standing at 16th and Wharton streets and then following two 23-year-old men westbound on the 1500 block of Wharton and southbound on the 1300 block of South Bancroft Street via his bike at 6:50 p.m. July 2, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. McNeil is believed to have approached the pair from behind and said, “You know what this is? It’s a stickup,” Tolliver said. He allegedly pulled out a knife and grabbed one of the men by his collar and said, “ Give me your cell phones and money or I will kill you.” Each handed over $10, which McNeil is believed to have taken and demanded that the men run while he fled in an unknown direction on his bicycle, Tolliver said. The victims, who identified McNeil in a photo array July 10, were unharmed. McNeil turned himself in to police July 18. He was charged with two counts of robbery, intimidation, theft, receiving stolen property, terroristic threats and related offenses, according to court records. He is being held on $300,000 bail for those crimes plus another $300,000 bail for a robbery that occurred on the 1700 block of South Broad Street at 12:02 a.m. July 2.

Surveillance video
Police are seeking a man who followed an 81-year-old woman from a Passyunk Square check cashing store. The suspect, captured in surveillance video, waited near the pawn window while the woman cashed her check for an undisclosed amount at United Check Cashing, 1123 S. Broad St., at 1 p.m July 17, police said. As she exited the location, he followed — and even held the door open for her, according to video surveillance. When they reached the 1300 block of South Juniper Street, he shoved her to the ground and snatched her wallet, which was hanging around her neck, before fleeing westbound on Wharton. Three local establishments will help community members to enhance their dance moves. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

s she prepares to teach and interact with participants during Saturday’s fourth annual Philadelphia Dance Day festivities, mastermind Deborah Hirsch desires to see hundreds of smiling faces, but glistening will matter more to her than glimpsing. “I want to see people sweating,” the 31year said Tuesday of a hope she holds for the celebration. “That’s always proof of how much focus and tenacity they have and how diligently their instructors are working.” If one yearns to pour out perspiration, strengthen talent or begin a hobby, the resident of 19th Street and Washington Avenue promises a day designed to affirm dance’s benefits, notably offering a creative outlet and promoting physical well-being. For Hirsch, the affair also will enlist camaraderie as a theme, as it will feature dance companies that normally compete for patrons acting as artistic allies and attendees bonding to commend the diverse nature of dance. “It’s very gratifying to see people getting joy from the workshops,” the president of Philly Dance Fitness said. “It’s a labor of love to put everything together, and the real point behind it is knowing they are willing to explore what dance can do for them.” Having established her brainchild, for which she serves as a choreographer and instructor, in 2010, the Wisconsin native, whose local connections include the Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 744 S. 17th St., and Programs Employing People, 1170 S. Broad St., that same year crafted an offshoot of National Dance Day, an initiative by “So You Think You Can Dance” co-creator Nigel Lythgoe. As her version has grown, she has accumulated equally ecstatic friends, with 10 venues, including The Arts Parlor, 1170 S. Broad St., The Christian Street YMCA, 1724 Christian St., and Major Moment Studio, 1624 South St., set to offer nearly 30 workshops, most of which will be free. “We’ve had increases in the number of sites, too,” Hirsch, who instructs at Newbold’s Arts Parlor and South of South’s Major Moment, said. “It’s encouraging that community members are responding to our inclusive approach to sustaining or restoring their health.” The trio of South Philly spots will offer 13 of the 20 daytime workshops, with Major Moment set to handle seven courses and the Arts Parlor and the YMCA halfing six lessons. On account of their being free, interested parties can attend as many morning and
afternoon sessions as they wish, with a onetime $5 admission fee covering the evening action at The Ethical Society in Center City. “I went to a couple events two years ago and felt so good about myself that I encouraged my husband to have us take salsa lessons,” Gabriella Falla said of honoring her Colombian roots. “I wouldn’t say we’re masters, but we get along pretty well because of the inspiration I felt from my introductory class.” The resident of the 1900 block of South 18th Street intends to have her 6-year-old daughter Mariana experience her initial ballet steps with the inaugural kids’ course at Major Moment, which director and owner Beverly Holskin, also a Philly Dance Fitness instructor, will present. “So many people are putting the focus on giving children exposure to [the] arts, and I often think they don’t put enough emphasis on dance in those discussions,” Falla said. “It’s great to be a musician, for example, but you need people who are willing to move to their songs.” IN ADDITION TO the day’s 10 a.m. premier performance, Holskin will handle Major Moment’s adult-geared jazz tech presentation and

ASSUMPTION CHURCH continued from page 1 Orthodox Church and the Stroudsburg-situated Holy Trinity Orthodox Church feel the same and flocked to South Philly to complete their mission trip for the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania. Happening upon a spiritual home that welcomed more than 100 worshippers four decades ago and now sees Cantrell ministering to as few as 30 devotees, the guests aimed for the rejuvenation of its exterior and interior appeal, with the latter already receiving an assist from ornate icons. “This place has my heart,” new congregant Matthew Sweet, who along with his fellow registrants and the visitors addressed the churchyard’s unruly vegetation, cleared church hall clutter, fixed the church’s leaking roof, repainted the fence and trimmed trees, said. “It teaches me about the Lord and gives me the motivation to tell others.” The 24-year-old denizen of the 2800 block of Cantrell Street is among the youngest disciples yet already possesses enough awareness to accept his spiritual leader’s contention that the orthodox facility can serve as a haven regardless of one’s background. Promoting that message has come naturally to Cantrell in terms of how it matches with his religious fervor yet somewhat difficult in that he has to overcome perceptions of the confines as being only for certain populations. “We have Russian roots, yes, but at the heart of the Orthodox Church and Christianity is the call to love God above all things and to love our neighbors more than ourselves,” the Wisconsin native, who prior to beginning his local tenure served at Frackville’s Holy Ascension Orthodox Church, said. “Through the lens of Jesus Christ, we’re to see everyone as fully human. We’re to be wise in loving, surely, but we’re not to be afraid in taking care of our neighbors.” In addition to the churchgoers calling South Philly home, Cantrell welcomes travelers from Delaware County, North Philly and South Jersey and is striving to have the structure reacquire some of its heyday’s luster. “I’m thinking of last week’s aid as a continuation of our advocacy for our inspirational role in this community,” the 35-year-old priest said, acknowledging unconditional love as his motivation. “We’ve had people see us as not for them simply because of their not knowing or not feeling we can assist them. We want to offer assistance on their journey to salvation.” HIS HAUNT BEGAN primarily through the fruits of 39 laymen who met with Rev. Father J. Krohmalny in January 1913 to express desires for a new parish, which he would come to helm as the first pastor of

The Assumption of the Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church. The spot subsequently came under the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church of America, its current overseer. For its Golden Jubilee, the Ladies’ Auxiliary donated a new and still present iconostasis, or wall of icons and religious paintings, and a decade later, the cupola, or vault, which Cantrell relayed has become an eye-catcher, appeared. In ’81, a new auxiliary, St. Sophia’s Sisterhood, formed and furthered the church’s emphasis on beauty through donations of banners and church articles and modification of the parish roof. “We do have the enthusiasm for beauty and elegance,” Cantrell said after peering at images of the Apostles, through whom Orthodox practitioners trace their bishops, and the Virgin Mary, whom they laud as the Theotokos, or “God-bearer.” “These show our reverence for our predecessors in accepting the divine call.” The rector hopes the altered green space will come to symbolize refinement, too, as he has begun talks with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to transform it into a community garden. That potential newness and commitment to positivity are in accordance with what Martha Palubniak wants for her three-year devotional quarters. “I was raised in the Orthodox faith and reconnected with it through my church when I moved here,” the Newbold resident said. “It’s definitely the belief system for
me, and I hope that as more people understand they need spiritual guidance, they come here, too, and help us to address the community at large.” Cantrell shared that vision Friday as he distributed hot dogs to locals as a sign of fellowship and an introduction to his heightened will to do his savior’s will, namely, loving as he has been loved. As the church faced closure four years ago because of financial ordeals, he sees each day as a call to evangelize and accept all into his site’s devotion to communion with others. Sweet has become a disciple of those views and wants Cantrell to baptize him in the near future. “I’ve learned to be real and be myself through Assumption Church,” he said, adding he had rarely felt any zeal for religious devotion before joining. “I don’t necessarily care what people believe, just that they do, and Father Matthew helps me to do it.” As Cantrell and his followers count the days until their Oct. 27 festivities, he enjoys acknowledging the church’s mature and rich history. Eager to add to his annals, he stresses patience as his chief assistant. “I’ve learned to ask for more of it and practice it,” Cantrell said. “It’s what we all need to understand our responsibilities to self and to others.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. A Passyunk Square actor will return to his improv roots through a comedy group’s anniversary shows. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r
H
aving left the improv world 13 years ago, Scott Greer believes his skills have collected a touch of dust, but as he prepares to end his hiatus, his comedic talent and timeliness seem intact. “I’m probably going to have to wear a diaper,” the 42-year-old performer said Friday from his home on the 800 block of Federal Street. “Because I’ll be with so many great people, though, I’m confident I’m in good hands.” Instead of being a literal party pooper, the Passyunk Square dweller intends to pay homage to his former extemporaneous existence Saturday when he and 39 peers, including wife Jen Childs, unite at University City’s World Cafe Live to help ComedySportz to mark its 20th anniversary. “I value having the opportunity because my improv training helped me to embrace and jump into the unknown without fears and judgments, and that’s helped me to increase my range as an actor,” Greer, whose tenure with the laugh-inducing troupe lastStaff photo by K at h r y n P o o l e
LIFESTYLES ed from shortly after its 1993 inception to 2000, said. “I see this as a big deal to me as an entertainer.” Along with South Philadelphians Kevin Dougherty, Noah Herman and Dave Jadico, he and his 15-year bride will engage in refereed tussles to tally points and further their reverence for life’s lighter aspects. Having replaced unscripted occasions with text-driven tests, he still esteems improv as a key capable of unlocking his creativity. “Artistically, I’m always looking for people and material that can make me better and challenge me,” Greer said. “In the theatrical universe, that’s what I would hope everyone would want, no matter if someone’s interests are comedic, dramatic or in between. With improv, we generate the material, but that same sort of spirit and vibe should be present.” Adding that the form also has intensified his presence in the present and sharpened his listening ability, the consummate professional expects Saturday to add to his impressive history of pleasing patrons and is not worrying much about the effects of the residual rust from his improv break. Rather than fretting, he is foreseeing a whimsical evening celebrating a prevailing influence on his life and a call to realize that when matters have one feeling morose, laughter remains the

best medicine. “I’m certainly ready for a great time,” Greer said. “It’s going to be a great way to stay fresh, and I expect my friends will want to put everyone in stitches, too.” ALONG WITH SERVING to rekindle his spontaneity, the weekend endeavor will find Greer reconnecting with comedy, his initial siren. A native New Yorker, he spent his formative years in Atlanta, gravitating toward humorous pursuits through his appreciation for Bill Cosby, Billy Crystal, Eddie Murphy, Monty Python and “Saturday Night Live.” “I was always a good mimic, and my interest in drawing out laughter sent me on the road I’m still on today, although the path has had a few alterations,” Greer said. “By college, it was pretty clear what I wanted to do.” Earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting from the Empire State’s Adelphi University, he came to strengthen an attraction to meatier material and moved to Philadelphia in 1992 as a Walnut Street Theatre apprenticeship winner. The next few years included a plethora of plusses, including the genesis of his ComedySportz identity; the beginning of his most successful stage relationship with Old City’s Arden Theatre Co., for whom he
will appear in this fall’s “Parade” and next spring’s “Three Sisters”; and his ’96 relocation to South Philly with Childs, who in ’98 co-founded 1812 Productions, the nation’s lone professional theater company dedicated to comedy. “I come up with ideas for ‘This Is The Week That Is,’” Greer said of dabbling as a scribe for 1812, which has its administrative office at the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, 2329 S. Third St., and its consistent crowd-pleaser. “It’s great to aid that process.” Though he enjoys being an originator, he has gained his reputation primarily as an interpreter. With the stage becoming a consistent courter of his artistic ardor, he left ComedySportz to expand his skill set, a decision that has borne considerable fruit. He captured the 2001 Outstanding Leading Actor in a Play Barrymore Award for InterAct Theatre Co.’s “It’s All True” and the Outstanding Leading Actor in a Musical honor for Arden’s “Baby Case” in ’02, the same year yielding the F. Otto Haas Award for Emerging Philadelphia Theater Artist. “I feel especially honored to have the Haas because that made it really clear I could make a few waves,” Greer, who joined his partner as a winner of the accolade and added another Barrymore in ’08

as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical for the Arden’s “Assassins,” said. With dozens of pieces decorating his résumé, he has successfully achieved his goal of constantly evolving as he matures. “Some people can phone it in, but I thoroughly enjoy everything I’m in,” Greer, whose most recent work was in “North of the Boulevard” by Theatre Exile, 1340 S. 13th St., said. “I never get bored because Philadelphia has afforded me the chance to have a diverse career.” He also never experiences tedium as a father, as he and Childs are rearing a thriving 9-year-old daughter. As he and his ladies age, Greer is realizing even more how fortunate he is to be earning his living as an actor, what with financial peril seeming to threaten the arts’ survival. Enamored with his occupation, he knows that though venues will change, his appreciation for pages cannot. “To serve the play, to tell the story,” he said of the heart of his craft. “Style and tone are important, but they’re dressing. Great theater is being made here, and I’m lucky to be where I am.” SPR

Saving lives
A
s of this writing, 10-year-old Sarah Murnaghan continues her battle for life amidst a controversy over whether she should have received the double-lung transplant in the first place. The child has end-stage cystic fibrosis which placed her at the top of the lung transplant list for children. However, the complex guidelines for transplant recipients meant she was placed at the bottom of the adult transplant list. Her parents were victorious in a legal battle that won Sarah her transplanted lungs only to see them fail and require re-transplantation. In both cases, the transplanted lungs were in poor condition. Even successful lung transplants last only five years on average. That’s the primary reason why the medical guidelines favor adults receiving lung transplants ahead of children under 12. With re-transplantation, the odds of success lessen. Adults stand a better chance of success, not only because of the relatively short-term success of transplanted lungs, but also because they are better able to withstand the effects of the surgery and the consequent need thereafter to take anti-rejection drugs. Making the choice to attempt to save a dying child or helping an adult in dire need is akin to the situation in “Sophie’s Choice,” where a mother was forced by the Nazis to choose which of her children to save and which would die in a gas chamber. If there were more lungs available for transplantation, these horrific choices would not have to be made. Sarah’s parents did what any parents would have done; they fought for their child’s life and made extraordinary emotional appeals to the nation’s conscience, finally winning their battle through the legal system. The question is whether it is in the best long-term interests of everyone that a court step-in and overrule the nuanced medical guidelines in effect. As a kidney transplant recipient, I think the court made a mistake. The court’s decision appears to have been based on emotional rather than sound medical facts. Lungs for transplants are in very short supply. It seems obvious to me the medical guidelines were not based on discriminating against dying children, but on how best to successfully save the most lives in a procedure that is problematic at best. I would rather have the medical experts making those life-and-death decisions, not the legal system. In the end, the court’s decision to try and save Sarah, un-
■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m
derstandable though it may be, could hurt the future success of lung transplantation in America. It sets a precedent where decisions may be made on emotional appeals rather than sound medical judgment. I mentioned the issues surrounding kidney transplants are different, primarily because of the disparate nature of the organs. With increased public awareness, the problems facing people needing a kidney transplant can more easily be resolved. The success rate for kidneys is much higher than for lungs. Transplanted kidneys last longer. How long they last is largely dependent on whether they are from a cadaver or a live donor. Live donor kidneys last longer, and those from a blood relative last longer than a non-blood relative. Despite the almost routine nature of transplanting kidneys, people die every year waiting for the availability of an organ. We can save a lot of lives with a few simple steps. As the public has become aware of the need for donor organs, many (particularly young adults) have agreed to donate their organs upon their death. What is largely unknown is that a survivor’s family can overrule the wishes of the deceased. In other words, though you may have “organ donor” on your driver’s license, your family can frustrate your wishes. Unfortunately that is exactly what happens all too often today. There are complicated reasons why a family may decide your wishes will not be honored, but my feeling is their feelings should not trump the intentions of the deceased. Why should the family be allowed to overturn a decision an adult of sound mind made? I don’t get it, but the folks involved in transplant programs tell me it happens all of the time. The law needs to be changed so people’s lives can be saved and the donors’ wishes carried out. Another problem involves human nature and cannot be resolved by a change in any law. Even folks in desperate need of a transplant are often reluctant to ask a family member or friend to donate a kidney. In my case, my wife stepped forward as my donor. I could never have asked her or any other family member or friend to make that sacrifice. She made it easy by making the decision herself and adamantly standing by it. She is a hero among many heroes who have donated an organ to save another. What you should know is that though the procedure is not without some risk and involves more pain and a bit longer recovery than the recipient, most donors recover successfully and go about normal lives. Donors and recipients are not allowed to go through the transplant procedure without thorough testing to ensure a high degree of success. As more donors come forward, more people can be saved. They are waiting. The decision is yours. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.
Staff aboard a flight to Mexico City aim to entertain passengers amidst technical issues with the plane in “I’m So Excited.”
Still ‘Excited’ ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer
S
panish master Pedro Almodóvar follows an array of stirring, surreal, and seatpinning dramas with “I’m So Excited,” a high-flying sex romp that recalls the director’s earlier screwball comedies. Set aboard a commercial aircraft bound for Mexico City, the film, populated by a motley crew of sinners and lost souls, is so hilarious you’ll need tissues for your tears. The title is lifted from the Pointer Sisters’ tune of the same name, which, apart from being performed, showstopper-style, by the plane’s trio of gay flight attendants (Javier Cámara, Carlos Areces and Raúl Arévalo), serves to reinforce Almodóvar’s return to the days that shaped him. The 1980s weren’t only the years in which the director found his sexy, cheeky voice; in Spain, they also marked the heyday of the postFrancoist era, a time of lingering dread, but newfound release of inhibitions. Such are the themes that Almodóvar is channeling here, along with potent bits of commentary on Spain’s modern-day woes. The airplane — on which the entire film is set, save one semi-misguided subplot on the ground — is eventually forced to fly in circles and wait for an available runway, thanks to some technical problems with the landing gear. As a result, the passengers, who are tellingly divided into business and economy classes, must find any way possible to divert their attention from potential doom. Under Almodóvar’s control, this means plenty of fornication, drugs, mescalinespiked cocktails, and ruminations on life that are as feather-light as they are politically-tinged. Though painfully funny and stupendously orchestrated (a zippy,
packed-cockpit scene is worth the trip alone), “I’m So Excited” could just as easily be viewed as Almodóvar’s fizzy meditation on life itself, with individuals in a kind of circuitous limbo, and doing whatever they can to distract themselves from impending descent. Breezily hovering like the vessel that carries its cast of hedonists, “I’m So Excited” is one of the year’s best comedies, but it’s not without weight. Come for the drinks, tunes and debauchery, but stay for the in-flight messages, which Almodóvar deftly sprinkles in.

Written by mumblecore figurehead Mark Duplass, and directed by his wife, Katie Aselton, the low-budget survival thriller “Black Rock” shifts violently from vacation flick to bloody battle-of-the-sexes, with three friends (Aselton, Lake Bell, and Kate Bosworth) squaring off against three ex-marines on a remote island. The movie has its deplorable elements, but the way it explores gender roles makes it an unexpected gem. he fth annual helping of the South Philly Review’s Pizza Olympics was served up July 18 at the Pennsport-based Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd., where a crowd of more than 600 slice samplers passed judgement in several key tasting categories. The menu for this entertaining evening also included side orders of mingling, dancing and, of course, deciding which place will be satisfying that next pie craving. The salty-andsweet combination can be risky, but the chefs achieved a fine balance. The fine staff at Le Viet cares for its guests, answer questions and makes recommendations. ince I wait at least four to six weeks to review a new restaurant, I thought it a good idea to revisit Le Viet. I was most impressed with my dinner three years ago served in lovely surroundings by a knowledgeable staff. Le Viet now has a liquor license and offers specials at moderate prices. It also features a happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m and a creative list of cocktails. Wines are a bargain at $6 to $8 a glass. The décor is sleek and modern with black leather booths, banquettes, soft lighting and large glass vases filled with fresh flowers. The music playing on the sound system provided the right background for patrons. Edward and I could actually enjoy our conversation. We began our dinner with summer rolls ($3) and a crispy crepe filled with shrimp and vegetables ($9.95). Summer rolls are eye-appealing as you can see the shrimp and basil through the rice paper wrapper. We received two plump rolls layered with cool vermicelli, thinly sliced pork, fresh, fragrant basil and perfectly cooked shrimp. The rice paper wrapper had a fine texture as it was not-at-all gluey or gummy. A small mound of julienned pickled carrots and turnips were placed on the plate along with a ramekin of peanut sauce. The crepe symbolizes the French influence on Vietnamese cuisine. Le Viet’s version topped any crepe I’ve sampled in Vietnamese restaurants. Medium-sized shrimp were married with bean sprouts and shredded vegetables and placed inside a light-as-a-feather,
thin crepe. The finished dish was crisped in a hot pan and served with a sweet and tangy dipping sauce. We cut the offering into wedges and found it perfectly seasoned. Leaves of green leaf lettuce, fresh mint, purple basil and pickled carrots and turnips made it a complete dish. You can place the crepe inside a lettuce leaf and top it with mint or basil or just enjoy the vegetables topped with sauce. Since I loved the pho on my first visit, I wanted to sample another soup. I can eat soup on a brutally hot, sultry summer evening because I am and always will be a soup girl. Roasted pork wonton soup ($7.95) was one of the specials. It was large enough for two. A large, white bowl was filled with a rich, homemade chicken stock, a tangle of thin egg noodles, thinly-sliced scallions, a green vegetable that I call the Asian version of rapini, slices of slightly sweet boneless pork and plump wontons filled with minced pork and shrimp. If I could give an award for wontons, Le Viet easily wins. The wrapper was thin and translucent, but kept its shape as I bit into it. Sometimes the pork and shrimp are overcooked and turn to mush. These little packages retained a fine texture. We sipped a glass of Fetzer Gewurztraminer ($7) that was a little sweet but paired nicely with the slightly spicy food. I also wanted to try one of the clay pot dishes because braised meats are among my favorites. After some deliberation, we decided on the spare ribs ($12.95). The bone-in ribs were sliced into 1-inch pieces and marinated in a mixture of soy sauce,

ith great-grandmother Esther Smith and mother Latonya MooreMathis as keen observers July 18, Cherelle Moore thundered a serve at Barry Playground, 1800 Johnston St., and beamed a smile indicative of pride in her progress. Along with her twin brother Terell Moore, the 12-year-old resident of the 1500 block of Federal Street is netuning her skills through the National Junior Tennis & Learning program, with their enrollment cementing their status as fourth-generation court connoisseurs. “When I started, I thought tennis would be hard, but it just takes practice to get better,” Cherelle said as she and her sibling inspected their peers’ ground strokes at the Marconi recreational space. “I’m trying to improve every day, and it’s good to meet people who want me to do that.” The Point Breeze dweller and her relative have fraternized with the similarly-aged youngsters since June 25, building on their spring involvement with the South Philadelphia Tennis Association’s Junior Team Tennis initiative. They learned of the latter through Bryan Hughes, who offered winter lessons to them and their friends at Edwin M. Stanton School, 1700 Christian St. “They’ve come far and have impressed me with their growth,” the Passyunk Square resident and association founder said. “Plus, it’s really neat that they’ve been able to continue their family’s tradition as lovers of the game.” Terell has thus far proven the more engaged tactician, but no matter their shot selection, he and his sister are giving their descendants gladness, especially Smith, who pioneered her clan’s engagement five decades ago. “I followed the game and wanted to try my luck at it,” the West Philadelphian said of her days smacking balls against a wall at Vare Recreation Center, 2600 Morris St. “I had to have my start somewhere and since I liked it, I figured I would show my kids.” Her son, Frank Jones, welcomed the wisdom and passed it along to his daughter, who became an NTJL enrollee at the East Falls-based Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education facility, now called Legacy Youth Tennis and Education. “I really enjoyed being out there and learning,” Moore-Mathis, who has rekin-
dled her interest thanks to her offspring, said. “Now with these guys, I’m finding it’s all they talk about.” Prior to partnering with Hughes, whose coaching résumé includes successful high school and junior college stints in Texas, Terell and Cherelle had sated any court cravings by playing with kin in Baltimore. When he approached Stanton Principal Stacey Burnley last year about providing tutelage to her South-of-South pupils, they gladly signed up for formal training and have used their extended relationship with Hughes to improve more than their footwork and rackethead speed. “Tennis keeps my energy up and helps me work on my character,” Terell, also the owner of a powerful serve, said. “I like playing the game and meeting people who feel the same.” NJTL DEBUTED IN 1969 through the efforts of entrepreneur Sheridan Snyder, Ashe and fellow player Charlie Pasarell, who designed it to reach out to underprivileged children who, through its emphasis on developing self-esteem and sportsmanship, increase their athletic and interpersonal
skills. Over their seven-week participation, this year’s registrants are learning about Ashe, the 19993 Presidential Medal of Freedom winner who remains the lone African-American male to win a major singles title, performing reading and reflective writing activities, entering art and essay contests and engaging in team and individual match play. “It’s been wonderful seeing their commitment,” Smith said, with Moore-Mathis adding Terell and Cherelle have come to mimic their great-grandmother’s using a wall as an opponent by venturing to Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 744 S. 17th St. “I’m enthused that they’re enthused.” Smith’s descendants are gradually accumulating knowledge of the sport, especially the contributions of African-Americans such as Ashe and Serena Williams, the top-ranked female and holder of 33 singles, doubles and mixed doubles Grand Slam championships. Growing accustomed to handling pressure through their early slate of matches, Terell and Cherelle witnessed how professionals deal with the limelight Friday, as they joined Hughes and their contemporaries at The Pavilion

Who knows?” As they head toward NTJL’s Aug. 8 conclusion, they are hoping to gain enough confidence to lead the Barry group, which last year finished as the City’s intermediate runner-up, to a championship. With Smith, Jones and Moore-Mathis as inspirations, they feel no worries about hitting crisp volleys or attacking second serves. “It’s awesome,” Terell said of coming from such a committed family, members of which are trying to find ways to improve local courts and possibly construct others. “I like that they support me,” Cherelle added. “I also like having a chance to play with my brother.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124.
