hough rain hindered many performers at Saturday’s ART/GAGE festival along the 1000 block of South Street, the clouds kept quiet long enough for Kabita Bastola to shine. The 15-yearold commenced a celebration of Nepalese culture by giving a dance display, then watched 10 female elders honor their background through singing and dancing. Their presence highlighted their refugee identity and helped Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, 1020-22 South St., to stage the fifth edition of its largest one-day event. See ART/GAGE page 8

ny parent knows the perils of taking a lengthy trip, such as the droning “Are we there yet?” cry, but Steve Bandura dealt with no such drama last month. The 51-year-old coach led the Anderson
Monarchs Baseball Club on a three-week, 4,500-mile barnstorming tour to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier, generating memories and lessons in humility for his 16 charges. “We had a chance to do what few children will ever experience,” 9-year-old Darius Isaac said Monday at the Marian
Anderson Recreation Center, 744 S. 17th St., where Bandura formed the Monarchs, named after Robinson’s Kansas City-based Negro League team, in 1995. To The Editor: Two nicely-dressed men from the church at Seventh and McKean streets strolled to the corner on the night of July 19 to gaze down with interest at the kitten screaming as it was drowning in the sewer. “We don’t live around here,� they told the teenage girls and crowd of little kids who were begging someone for help. Most of the people in the neighborhood went about their business, while the screaming continued from the desperate little cat, who was clawing at the walls trying to keep his head above the filthy water. One older gentleman stopped and started working his cell phone to summon help — the sewer grate was too much for him to lift. Verizon Wireless 411 didn’t have a number for Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Team. No one at the Pennsylvania SPCA picked up the phone. The screaming had mostly stopped by then. The kitten was going under the water for longer and longer periods, exhausted by its fight for life. Kittens can’t swim, but this kitten had been swimming for a half hour. Who came through? The Philadelphia Water Department. One burly guy rolled up in a truck, ripped off the grate, and with the aid of the older gentleman, rigged tools together to get the soaked, shivering kitten out of the sewer. He’s 6 months old, and a beautiful gray color. You can see him soon in the adoption center at the PetSmart on Oregon Avenue. Ask for Tony McKean. The kids named him after the Water Department hero who saved him — can’t give his full name because pulling drowning kittens out of sewers is really not an official Water Department matter — and McKean for the street where he was reborn. The older gentleman who led the rescue walked away before anyone got his name. And the well-dressed church folks and the adults who sat on their stoops chatting while a kitten screamed in agony in the summer evening – what about them? Chances are little Tony McKean didn’t just tumble into that sewer. He’s skinny, but not that skinny. Chances are someone threw or kicked him in there. Creeps like that aren’t satisfied torturing kittens for long. Whoever it was will be going after the children next
— maybe not this week, maybe not until next year. But it will happen. Let’s hope someone hears when those children start screaming. Peg Brickley South Philadelphia
Fired up about violence To the Editor: I have lived in South Philadelphia all my life. As my generation gets older in age and more insane, I hear a lot about gun violence toward children and teens my age and also young children. They’re either pulling the trigger or the ones dying from the bullet. I feel as though it is very sad that even young teens have the idea of buying a firearm to protect themselves. Everyone should be able to feel safe in their neighborhood. It’s good that official authorities are taking action to decrease the number of deaths from gun violence. Since the task force has been in action, many people with illegal firearms have

been arrested. Prior to, these crimes occasionally happened out in the Tasker projects, which is the 3200 block in South Philly. During the past summers, most of the gun violence was caused by ridiculous fights that turn into shootings between groups of people or neighborhoods. Also, guns have been aimed at innocents and more sadly children. Guns on the streets should be put to a stop and gun laws need to be stricter. It is sad because Philadelphia is supposed to be the city of “Brotherly Love,� but people shooting and committing the crimes are contradicting that saying. People don’t understand, even though the bullet wasn’t supposed to hit the 2-year-old, a bullet doesn’t have a name. Suicidal encounter
A woman took her life after launching bullets from her rear deck Sunday. By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor
A
fter firing shots from her apartment balcony, an area woman committed suicide Sunday afternoon. Neighbors had heard several gunshots before police responded to the 2600 block of South 12th Street for a person with a gun at 4:23 p.m., Officer Christine O’Brien of the Police Public Affairs said. Officers detected a shot fired inside the second-floor apartment before a 33-year-old woman walked out onto the rear balcony. They advised her to drop the gun, but she reentered the residence and another shot went off. SWAT arrived and were unable to make contact with the woman, O’Brien said. With the use of cameras, SWAT members determined she was deceased and entered the apartment. With a bullet to her head, she was pronounced dead at 5:57 p.m.
Temporary escape A Point Breeze robber who held up a Passyunk Square gas station allegedly borrowed a relative’s car to use as his getaway vehicle early Sunday. Ellis Rashan, 23, of the 2300 block of Dickinson Street, is believed to have entered Sunoco, 1100 S. 10th St., and said, “Give me the money. Don’t make me shoot you,” to a 28-year-old male employee as he reached for his waistband at 6:46 a.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The cashier handed over $200. As customers entered the store, the offender allegedly fled and headed southbound on 10th and west on Federal Street in a dark blue Hyundai Sonata. Witnesses provided the license plate number to detectives, who saw the vehicle parked on the 2300 block of Dickinson Street when they went to speak to the car’s registered owner, Tolliver said. The owner, a relative of the suspect, allowed Rashan to borrow the car. Detectives spotted him allegedly sneaking out the back door of his home, stopped him on the 1400 block of South 23rd Street and confiscated $200 dollars, including a bill with a Sunocorecorded serial number on it. Rashan was arrested at 8:50 a.m. and charged with robbery, terroristic threats and related offenses, according to court records. He did not post bail, which was set at $75,000 Monday, at press time. Police towed the vehicle and received a search warrant for the home where more

Disrupted service A Grays Ferry man armed with a box cutter robbed a Hawthorne cell phone store. Jesse Binion, 42, of the 1500 block of South Newkirk Street, entered T-Mobile, 777 S. Broad St., to inquire about cell phone functions at 10:20 a.m. July 25, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He then left, but returned 20 minutes later and asked two 19-year-old employees if he could speak with them in the backroom. The men denied him access behind the counter, but he allegedly kept trying to pass them, pulled out a box cutter and said, “This is a robbery.” He waved the blade around and tried to open the cash register, Tolliver said. When he was unable to do so, he allegedly snatched a store demo phone from the counter and fled. Binion allegedly resisted arrest, but was apprehended on the 1700 block of Catharine Street at 11:30 a.m. with the stolen phone in his possession, Tolliver said. He was charged with two counts of robbery, aggravated assault and related offenses, as well as a count of possession of an instrument of crime and resisting arrest, according to court records. His bail, set at $100,000, was not posted at press time. Binion has an open aggravated assault case from the 17th District for which he was arrested in June, according to court records. Broad St., earned her chance to flash her footwork through her community’s interaction with the Lutheran Children and Family Service, a division of Ambler’s Liberty Lutheran. The agency heads the Philadelphia Refugee Mental Health Collaborative, a twoyear citywide initiative working to help resettled populations to overcome heartrending memories of torture and violence and to assimilate into their new realms. Kabita and her countrywomen possess an especially wrenching tale as ethnic Nepalese, who, following mistreatment in refugee camps, experienced expulsion from Bhutan, whose government deemed their affinity for Hinduism an affront to its preference for Buddhism. “I have been here for four years,” the teenager said, “and I’m always trying to reflect while moving on.” Kabita’s arrival coincided with a massive relocation of her compatriots to the United States. Magic Gardens, in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services, Jefferson University Hospital’s Department of Family and Community Medicine and Lutheran, is honoring their commitment to integration with a photo exhibition titled “Envisioning Home: Perspectives from Philadelphia Refugees.” The 69-image collection also honors Burmese and Iraqi transplants, who combine with the Nepalese to form Philadelphia’s largest refugee groups. “First, we needed to give people an understanding of what a refugee is,” Magic Gardens fourth-year Executive Director Ellen Owens said while adjacent to an introductory plaque that defines a refugee as one who has fled because of persecution, violence or war. It also reveals approximately 850 such figures annually attempt new lives in Philadelphia, so the combined organizations involved families in a PhotoVoice study. Owens and her colleagues received information and pictures from Jefferson, who, along with Lutheran, worked to have the Asian clans note through photographs their reactions to life in a bustling metropolis. Uniting five Iraqi, six Nepalese and seven Burmese residents, the project, deriving from a London-based company that envisions a world “in which no one is denied the opportunity to speak out and be heard,”

taught them photography, encouraging candid depictions of contentment and strife. Festival visitors escaping the downpours ventured inside to inspect the refugees’ output, with 23 shots from each ethnicity covering analyses of culture, the environment, family and opportunity. Capturing images of relatives appealed most to the Burmese and Nepalese, and Ludovica Connarrelli, with 4-year-old daughter Astrid by her side, appreciated the family focus. “This one is gorgeous,” the resident of the 200 block of Pemberton Street said of a Bhutanese mother and daughter bedecked in saris. “It reveals hope and yet has a touch of sadness to it.”
Though one could debate the constitution of the couple in the display, which runs through Aug. 27, none could deny the happiness of Kabita, who wore a lavender sari to dance to a song called “Chunmun, Chunmun.” With more than 40 art and food vendors and nonprofits around her, she slowed the action by twirling her frame, earning rousing applause. “Dance is important to my people,” she said. “I’m glad people responded well to my effort.” A MOSAICKED VISIONARY art environment, gallery and community arts center, Magic Gardens became an incorporated nonprofit

in 2004, and the site stands out as artist Isaiah Zagar’s most prominent piece. Thousands of glittering mirrors, bicycle wheels, glass bottles, hand-made tiles and folk art statues dominate its interior, while its outdoor mosaic sculpture garden spans half a block. Saturday’s attendees of the 10-hour street occasion spent the time between musical performances inspecting Zagar’s work and honoring what Owens said is the site’s commitment to art as a bridge for embracing diversity and seeing talent in all. “Each celebration is a beautiful opportunity to see deeper into what people believe and desire to express,” the West Philadelphian said. “With ‘Envisioning Home,’ we are stressing the power of photography in conveying emotions, whether triumphant or sad.” The dancing likewise struck a balance between losses and gains. Many of the Nepalese dutifully manage the Growing Home Garden on the 700 block of Emily Street, with all calling the expanse from Third to 12th streets along Snyder to Oregon avenues their residence. The tight-knit ladies, who performed at the exhibition’s opening reception July 13, have used dance to increase their bonds, even moving it up on their priorities list. “We enjoy it so much,” Thagi Bastola, Kabita’s aunt, said, “that some even ask for permission to leave their jobs early for practice.” Thagi, of Fifth and Shunk streets, joined her cherished friends for a dance she explained contains layers of meaning. “It is for expressing problems, pain and strength and is very common, especially among married women,” she said. While four ladies intoned, the rest danced, often stooping to form a metaphor for setbacks before stretching out their arms to stage a contrary set of emotions. Their saris and the background formed a colorful pair, and they accepted claps and smiles as tokens of appreciation. “Being able to perform on a day devoted to creativity makes us feel special because we want to inform people of our lives,” Thagi, who arrived nine months ago, said. Their performance marked their second event in three days, as they had also entertained a crowd July 26 at the Parkway Central Branch. “October is Mural Arts Month, so the City will be revealing two or three refugee murals in South Philly,” Melissa Fogg, a Lutheran immigration mental health specialist said. “They will likely dance then, too.” “I commend the refugees,” Owens added. “We are on the edge of South Philly, so I am sure the international audience we attract appreciates their pride in their identity.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. The Mount Airy resident had designed the ’97 and 2004 treks to allow his players to see the country, but used this occasion to have the land inspect their talent. “I could not have asked for anything more from the kids,” Bandura, who began plotting the excursion in October, said of his athletes’ attitudes and results. Receiving sponsorships from numerous entities, including MLB and Vincera Core Physicians, 4623 S. Broad St., he prepared the children, who also play basketball and soccer under him, to understand further the significance of Robinson’s era and its effect on their lives, especially for the squad’s African-Americans. His plan included viewings of Ken Burns’ “Baseball” documentary and using a 1947 Flxible Clipper bus, minus air conditioning, to have them mimic what Robinson, who would go on to star for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and his mates faced in venturing to games. Mighty Writers, 1501 Christian St., also distributed journals to its South of South neighbors, instructing them to chronicle their travels for a planned book. With all in place, however, the young ones initially missed the essence of the opportunity. “We didn’t see the beauty right away,” 10-year-old Delaware dweller Myles Eaddy said. “Honestly, I thought the rides would be boring,” 11-year-old Mo’ne Davis, the unit’s lone female and a resident of 24th and Oakford streets, added, “but they gave us time to reflect and bond.” The bus adventure, though, gave them no access to technology, as Bandura prevented its use, again to establish a link to Robinson’s time. Other diversions, including cards, occupied them, and they arrived in each city committed to acing the competition. Their leader scheduled 13 contests against top opponents, but no foe inspired any apprehension. “We’re so used to playing that most of us had no nerves,” Myles said. “Our only worry was maybe sounding stupid during interviews.” “We usually play just to have fun, but we wanted to give a bigger effort,” 11-year-old Scott Bandura, the coach’s son, added. Hours before opening their slate at the Harlem RBI Field of Dreams June 30, Bandura and his band visited Brooklyn’s Cypress Hill Cemetery to see Robinson’s grave, with the ballplayers placing balls adorned with private messages at the site. “Robinson’s grave was a powerful moment because it gave so much perspective,” the coach said. In between the stop and their initial clash, the Monarchs proceeded to Yankee

Time in Pittsburgh, whose PNC Park the players deemed their favorite, included a game at the Josh Gibson Academy, named for Robinson’s Negro League peer, and a walk across the Roberto Clemente Bridge, an homage to the Pirate Hall of Fame outfielder. Cleveland’s League Park, a Negro League haven and the location of Babe Ruth’s 500th home run; a tour of Chicago’s Wrigley Field; an Iowa game on the cinematic Field of Dreams; and a jaunt to Kansas City’s Negro Leagues Baseball Museum highlighted the first 10 days. “I think our time at [Cleveland’s] Progressive Field was awesome,” 11-year-old Germantown inhabitant Femi Awodesu said of stretching with players, sprinting from home plate to center field and running around the bases after launching pre-

The second half also thrilled them, with a stop at St. Louis’ Gateway Arch; a wooden bat game in Louisville, Ky.; time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway; a soccer game in South Point, Ohio; a sojourn to the Lincoln Memorial, where Marian Anderson performed in ’39; and jaunts to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and the White House resonating the most. For Mo’ne, July 16 had special meaning, as she received tips in Aldie, Va., from Mamie “Peanut” Johnson, one of three women to play in the Negro Leagues and, like the Point Breezer, a pitcher. “Ms. Mamie was a character,” Mo’ne said of the 76-year-old, who, along with other living Negro League era players ended up as picks in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Only four inches shorter than her 5-foot-3 elder, who from 1953 to ’55 won 33 games for the Indianapolis Clowns, Mo’ne said time with the former hurler helped her to gain a better sense of their sport’s progression. “I value her example,” she said, adding, that for all of the Monarchs, the trip bred
a combination of accountability, empathy, integrity and leadership. “I am happy for Mo’ne,” Bandura, who begins to work with children as young as 6 and continues to nurture them through high school, said. “Meeting Mamie Johnson goes a long way toward connecting the past with the future. Most of the trip brought the present and the future together, but going farther is key.” The Monarchs returned July 18, enjoying a quick respite before heading to Cooperstown. N.Y., July 22 for the Hall of Fame ceremony. A trip to the hall itself occurred the next day, as did their arrival in South Philly. “I think we came close to going through what the Negro players did,” Mo’ne said. “And we remembered to be humble,” Scott Bandura added. Lifestyles continued from previous page episode, with dancing teenagers. Once there, he was tapped when bandleader Ray Anthony created a new song that needed choreography. Sheldon, then a student at Northeast Philly’s Lincoln High School, become a co-creator of the show’s signature “The Bunny Hop.” “I got known for doing it, creating the choreography with Dimples [my dance partner],” Sheldon, who has stayed in contact with Dimples, said. “I only stayed on ‘Bandstand’ for a short time because I started getting all this other work.” The exposure led to a string of opportunities, one of the earliest being the start of his broadcast career. “I was around 18, 19. I got out of school at 17 and became a disc jockey,” Sheldon, 76, said. “I always wanted to be a disc jockey. It was my dream as a little kid.” Sheldon went on to have a storied career in television and radio, marked by several firsts, such as bringing rock music for the first time to FM radio. His current projects rely on these six decades of experience, a sharp memory and his proven ability to tell a good story. “The last [book] I had written is ‘The History of the Golden Age of Pop Music.’ All my books are 828 pages, and heavy, because I have so much to say about mu-
sic,” Sheldon, who has also written on other topics, such as South Philadelphia’s history, said. “I want people to realize it didn’t just stop at a certain time. It continues on as long as music borrows the same structure of the Golden Age.” In the same vein, Sheldon still takes to the airwaves with harveysheldonphillyradio. com, where a Philadelphia-located engineer streams many of Sheldon’s favorites from a time he believes produced better music than the “screaming” of today’s artists. “A few years ago I was playing nothing but Philly artists, but I realized I had to broaden the programming to people who weren’t from Philly,” he said. “Mario Lanza, The Four Aces, Bobby Darin, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon — all the greats. I was told you can’t hear that stuff anywhere else in Philadelphia.” WITH A FURNITURE shop at 704 Catharine St., Sheldon’s grandparents — Jewish Russian immigrants — set up an outfit and built themselves a respectable business. “My grandmother, the first thing [she did] when she got to this country was to learn English. My grandfather never learned but he was the wizard. My grandmother was a saleswoman like you’ve never seen,” Sheldon said. His parents would move the family to Southwest Philly, not continuing in the fur-
niture business. Sheldon’s dream to be an entertainer also was not a family trait, but he found his way into the spotlight. “I was a great dancer. At about 8 or 9 someone discovered me … and taught me how to dance. I became very good as a professional,” Sheldon said. After building a name with “The Bunny Hop,” Sheldon was afforded two seasons on “The Red Buttons Show” and then another stint on “Swing into Spring,” a TV movie with Benny Goodman. After television, he moved back into radio. “In this country it’s amazing, what made [making music] so great: Freedom. In Europe you couldn’t do it unless you were part of the elite or royalty. [The U.S.] opened up avenues,” Sheldon, who took his first radio job in Boston because he couldn’t find one in Philly, said. “It took off in different ways.” Sheldon spent the next handful of years at radio stations spanning from New England to California, pioneering such things as bringing rock to FM, as well as hosting a conservative talk show. “I was always ahead of my time,” he said. “I came back to Philadelphia and at that time in Philadelphia, there was Steve Allison on WPEN and then liberals … I was to be the only conservative one. They’d never heard of anyone being right
wing on the radio.” He was offered a move to Florida, where the audience was more sympathetic with his views. “I had a No. 1 rating and I was going really gangbusters,” Sheldon said. “It’s a crazy business, nothing lasts forever.” Eventually finding his way back to California, Sheldon has been able to watch his son, Sam, and daughters, Beth and Ivy, grow up, while continuing to work on the things he loves. A prolific writer, Sheldon keeps churning out histories. With his last two books on the digital shelf two months ago and then six months prior, respectively, he already has plans for his next release. “‘The Golden Age of Television’ — that will be out in January. After that, I’m going to write ‘The Golden Age of Radio’ because radio has really changed,” he said. Though he ended up raising a family on the other coast, Sheldon’s heart has never left his hometown. “I always tell people I might be in California, but I’m living in exile. I love my hometown,” Sheldon said. “One thing we don’t have in California is — I can’t find a real good Italian restaurant. t’s not only the slaughter in Aurora that makes me sick. What also makes me sick are the pious words uttered by both President Barack Obama and his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, after the tragedy. You can talk about it being a time to unify and what a great country this is, but this isn’t about the need for unity and we’re not such a great country when someone can walk into a movie theater and mow down the patrons. We need to reinstate the ban on assault weapons. Otherwise, it’s just empty talk. The president hides under the four poster in the Lincoln Bedroom for fear of upsetting the National Rifle Association. The NRA lovers are not going to vote for you anyway, Mr. President. No matter how silent you are on the need for rational gun laws, they still run ads telling everyone you are taking away their guns, so be a leader. Polls show Americans want a ban on assault weapons. There is no reason why any hate-filled nutcase should be able to walk into the nearest super store and buy a weapon whose sole purpose is to kill the most people in the shortest amount of time. You don’t hunt deer with semi-automatic assault weapons that fire 100 rounds of ammo. Romney knows better, too. Back when sanity ruled and he was the governor of Massachusetts, Romney signed into law a ban on assault weapons. But that was back before he kissed the backside of the crazies who have hijacked the Republican Party. Romney no longer sees the need to ban assault weapons, despite the latest American gun tragedy. We wanted bipartisanship and resisting a ban on assault weapons is where the two candidates meet, on the legal right to buy guns that are killing machines. The argument for not banning assault weapons was stated by the conservative columnist George Will, but it could just as well have been Ted Nugent. It goes something like this — if the maniac didn’t have an assault weapon, he would have bombed the movie theater. People like to think they can fix the problem by finding a flaw in the system, but massacres even happen in Norway, says Will. But gun massacres don’t happen nearly so often in Norway than they do here in the good old U.S. of A. And while a ban on assault weapons wouldn’t
cure the problem, it sure as hell would help if it weren’t as easy as using a credit card in your local super store to purchase a gun that can shoot 100 rounds of ammo without reloading. ... The entire Penn State mess makes me sick. While the NCAA penalties are severe, on the whole you can make a case for them. Personally, I was for letting the program continue to make loads of money and mandating much of it go not only to organizations that support victims, but also to the specific victims of Jerry Sandusky. I am also for the entire board of trustees stepping down. But here’s what also makes me sick: The hypocrisy of the NCAA. Hey folks, I hear your noble words about sending a message to other colleges and universities where the head coach is better paid and has more clout than the president of the university, but I’ve got news for you, they haven’t gotten the message. In fact, you have sent these football and basketball factories the opposite message. Right after the NCAA announced Penn State’s football players are, in essence, free agents, the campus has been overrun by smarmy recruiters from the other big-time schools trying to steal players. Sitting Bull had less Indians when he attacked Custer at Little Big Horn. It’s as if the Penn State players were coated with honey and the recruiters were flies. As I write this, the self-righteous wrath of the NCAA is nowhere in sight. Even the pros don’t allow tampering. Listen, if some Penn State players want to contact another school to investigate the possibility of transferring, that’s fine. But it’s not fine when recruiters from other schools descend on the Penn State campus like a plague of locusts. Didn’t the NCAA expect this? A comment about our media in this town. This is the same media, some of whom continue to suggest shutting down Penn State’s football program altogether in the hope of what, punishing more innocent people? Will Bunch and Buzz Bissinger separately wrote in the Daily News that the entire Penn State campus should be broken up — turn the campus into a bunch of little community schools (or maybe a nunnery or a parking lot). The only media guy I know who has actually made a sane contribution to the debate about dealing with the problem of big time athletics running roughshod over their schools is Bob Ford of the Inquirer. Ford suggested the NCAA put a cap on the enormous revenue a school can reap from their athletic programs. But the NCAA is awash with money from big time collegiate sports so nothing will be done. hat happens when your imaginary muse leaps off the printed page and greets you in the kitchen with eggs? That’s the ostensible question posed by the writerly romantic comedy “Ruby Sparks,” but it surely isn’t the only one. Both sweet and slyly dark, the film, which marks the sophomore effort of “Little Miss Sunshine” helmers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, explores some complicated territory beneath is magical-realist canoodling, presenting its creatively stifled novelist (Paul Dano) as an awkward puppy dog with near-contemptible quirks. Is Dano’s Calvin Weir-Fields hero or anti-hero? Does he deserve to be with his sprightly creation, Ruby (Zoe Kazan), or doesn’t he? Such shaky points are among the many plusses of the script Kazan wrote, a bold venture that allowed the actress to perform opposite her real-life squeeze (Dano), and lovingly critique the self-involvement and manipulative ways of successful male artists. It also gave Kazan the chance to pen her own showcase role, which births a performance that’s among this year’s best, evolving in dramatic range and emotional intensity. Inexplicably manifested from a story Calvin is writing, Ruby is strongwilled, but slave to whatever Calvin types about her, including her varying feelings toward him and random improbabilities like her sudden fluency in French. Kazan is the fervid answer to Dano’s nebbish bewilderment, resulting in a give-and-take that comes to a surprising head. A behind-the-camera couple leading the couple on set, husband-and-wife team Dayton and Faris raise their visual palette considerably, offering a thoughtful look that wasn’t quite present in their unfussy, roadtrip debut. Shot with attention to shapes by
Matthew Libatique, Calvin’s stark-white apartment looks like both blank page and rodent’s cage, and it’s the best example of how the movie’s aesthetic supports its various themes. To that end, what exists beyond the space is often awash with color, including Ruby, who, with her vibrant outfits and vivid demeanor, serves to bridge the gap and de-fog Calvin’s world. A cool little psychological study wrapped up in a date film, “Ruby Sparks” boasts the most interesting dichotomy of its own characters: Measurably simple on the outside, but far more rich within.

his quick-and-easy, meat-filled pasta dish is perfect for a family Sunday dinner or any night of the week. Instead of heading out to a favorite local Italian restaurant, stay in and enjoy Salvatore Bronti’s Easy Sausage Rigatoni. The resident of the 2500 block of South 19th Street‘s dish only takes about 20 minutes to prepare, but is guaranteed to have the whole family coming back for seconds. 1/2 pound of rigatoni, cooked according to package directions 1 or 2 ladles of pasta cooking water 1/2 to 3/4 pound of Italian sausage, hot or mild, casing removed 1 tablespoon of oil 1/2 of a red onion, chopped 12-ounce jar of marinated artichoke hearts 6-ounce jar of roasted red peppers, sliced Salt and pepper, to taste Parsley, for garnish
Crumble or slice the sausage and fry until brown in the skillet with the oil. Add the onion and cook until clear. Add the artichokes, with its marinade, and peppers, in strips, to the skillet and heat. Add one or two ladles of the cooking water to the skillet. Combine the skillet ingredients with the pasta in a large bowl and toss. Add the salt and pepper.. Garnish with the parsley.

t has been nearly 14 years since chef Marc Vetri opened Vetri, his awardwinning jewel box of a restaurant on the site of the original Le Bec Fin. Word quickly spread around the culinary world that Philadelphia had a truly fine chef creating Italian fare. In 2005, Vetri received the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic region. Since then, Vetri has added three more restaurants. I love Osteria on North Broad Street. I’ve been there several times and was never disappointed. Two years ago, Amis opened, but I was not too crazy about it. Service was spotty and hot food arrived lukewarm on cold plates. Whenever there’s a buzz that Vetri is up to something new and different, foodies mark their calendars and await the opening. So it was with some excitement when Edward and I walked into Alla Spina, Vetri’s Italian-style gastropub right off North Broad. Beer is king here. Alla Spina, which means “from the tap” in Italian, is a beerlovers delight. There’s a long, friendly bar, wooden booths, looming ceilings, a wall spray-painted with graffiti and a staff that is second to none. In other words, Alla Spina is funky/casual. I sipped an Allagash White ($5.50) while Edward toasted the locals with a Stoudt’s amber ($5). I needed a nosh with my beer and asked for house made pretzels with spicy beer cheese ($5). with sea-salt-covered nuggets of soft pretzels and a dish of almost liquid cheese, the base of which was cream cheese our delightful waiter said. Tuscan kale with provolone ($8) was a yummy concoction of shredded, raw green, but almost black Tuscan kale topped with deep pink peppercorns and shards of slightly salty imported provolone cheese. It’s a tasty way to eat vegetables. Ciliegine salad with corn, tomatoes, a scattering of arugula and slender threads of red chili peppers ($12) was on the small side. It was a blend of small, fresh mozzarella balls, grilled sweet white corn kernels, a scattering of ripe tomatoes and some arugula here and there. It was OK — something I could make at home. From the “plancha” we selected Louisiana Gulf prawns ($18) served warm. Four mid-size prawns were nestled in a pool of citrus butter that served as the perfect dipping sauce for the outstanding French fries ($5), which were fried in suet. The disappointing prawns were naked on the plate. Crispy sunchokes with sea salt ($4) were not as crispy as the fries, but I liked their flavor and texture. They looked like small bites of cubed potatoes and the texture was similar. Their unique flavor is difficult to describe. Don’t be surprised at the lack of pasta on Alla Spina’s bill of fare. This is done intentionally. Gnocchi and eggplant lasagna keep company. Eggplant lasagna ($15) was pretty to view. Homemade wide noodles were

crimped into a round ramekin and filled with eggplant strips, goat cheese bits, fresh oregano leaves and topped with heirloom tomatoes squares. It was piping hot so I had to wait a bit before figuring out how to eat it. The flavors were OK — I could truly taste the oregano, but this strong herb overpowered the goat cheese. The tomatoes were sweet and gorgeous as they should be this time of year. Pig pot pie ($16) was a twist on the classic pot pies but lacked vegetables. Salty pork strips were mixed with a slightly rich sauce and covered in puff pastry. I mixed my fork around and found a single pea. I did not care for this dish, but Edward did. For dessert, we shared Alla Spina’s version of budino ($8), which was downright disappointing. A footed glass contained about one-half-inch of chocolate pudding — which I found to be too sweet and was

topped with homemade toasted marshmallow and a round, graham cracker-like cookie. Vetri and Osteria always bring a smile to my face. The dishes are perfection on the plate. In a small bowl, whisk together the oil and lime juice. Pour it over the corn mixture and gently toss well. Taste and correct for seasoning. Serves four.

ummer is high season for local corn and tomatoes. I keep a big bowl of Lancaster County tomatoes on the kitchen counter and we eat them every night. I simply slice them, add some kosher salt and serve them with a cool salad of chopped eggplant and a loaf of Jewish rye bread as a first course. My family prefers white corn with tiny kernels. I husk, rinse and wrap each in plastic wrap. Then zap them in the microwave for two minutes on each side, slather them with butter and sprinkle on the kosher salt. There’s a running joke in our house during the hot summer months. Edward arrives home, looks at me and asks, “what are we having with the corn and tomatoes tonight?” I try to be creative with corn and tomatoes, keeping a lookout for new recipes or adding a twist to good, old standbys. We never seem to tire of cubes of feta or slices of fresh mozzarella with tomatoes and basil from my garden. You can make a cool or hot tomato soup or Stewed Tomatoes, a comfort food from my childhood that my mother would make once a week, usually on Thursday nights, as a side dish for broiled thick fluke flounder. During summers spent at the Jersey Shore, my mother would serve sugar corn as a separate course. She thought it was a sort of dessert because it was so sweet. Instead of flounder, I think I will splurge and buy four large Soft-Shell Crabs, which have been in season since the full moon in May. They are not cheap. A soft-shell crab restaurant entrée will set you back at least $25.
■ Stewed Tomatoes ■ Ingredients:
8 large red ripe tomatoes, sliced in half, cores and seeds removed 2 large bell peppers of choice, seeded and diced 1 large sweet onion, diced
■ Soft-Shell Crabs ■ Ingredients:
Gently reheat the stewed tomatoes when ready to serve. Serves four.
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Enough olive oil to cover the bottom of a large pot Large handful of fresh basil leaves, snipped with a scissors
Directions: Cut the tomatoes in large chunks. Place all of the ingredients except for the basil, in a large bowl and mix well. Heat the oil over mediumhigh. Add the ingredients from the bowl and sauté for about eight minutes. Taste and correct for seasoning. Add the basil and blend thoroughly. Remove the pot from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
Note from Phyllis: You can add a sprinkling of dry oregano and hot pepper flakes. Some cooks add a teaspoon or so of sugar.
■ Grilled Corn ■ Side Dish Ingredients:
8 ears of fresh corn, husked and grilled on the barbecue 1 15-ounce can of black beans, rinsed and drained 1 15-ounce jar of roasted red peppers, sliced Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Sprinkling of cumin Dash of Tabasco Large handful fresh herbs of choice such as Italian parsley or coriander, snipped with a scissors 1/2 cup of extra-virgin olive oil Juice of 3 limes
Directions: Once the corn has cooled, stand an ear in a large Ziploc bag. Gently run a sharp knife
4 large soft-shell crabs, patted dry with paper towels Flour for dredging, about 1 cup Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 3 tablespoons of Canola oil 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter White wine to deglaze the pan, about 1 cup Fresh Italian parsley leaves, chopped
Directions: Place the flour into a brown paper bag. Add the salt and pepper. Dredge each crab in the flour mixture shaking off the excess. Once all of the crabs have been dredged in the flour, place them on a large plate. Heat the oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high. Add the crabs and sear them for about five minutes per side. Remove them from the skillet and cover with foil to keep them warm. Add the wine to the skillet and raise the heat to high. Using a wooden spoon, scrape up all of the brown bits from the bottom of the skillet. You may wish to add 1 tablespoon of butter to enrich the sauce. Return the crabs to the skillet and pour some of the sauce over them. Top with the parsley. Serves four. Game. “I think we’ll be strong very soon.” The 1985 World Series champions assigned the Whitman product to the Grand Canyon State, and he has shifted well from being an amateur to a salaried adult. “I’ve found it easy to mesh with everyone because I have great coaches and teammates,” Donato said. “I’m playing against the best competition there is, trying to beat guys who were high picks, but I just try to be the best that I can.” Following a four-day-on, one-day-off schedule, the left-hander has developed a routine that keeps him aware of his need to impress, arriving for practice at 2 p.m., with games occupying hhim through 11 p.m. a “My proudest accomplishments have been holding the cleanup hitter spot in go the lineup and going out and handling 225 first base,” the 225-pound specimen, who h smacked his first home run July 16, said of his initial 25 gam games, through which he “I’ committing myself is hitting .275. “I’m to being a student of the game, and I’m learning something new each day.”

The next year, he helped his East Passyunk Crossing school to its first Catholic League championship L in 49 years, tos tossing a gem against La
Salle College High School in the final to earn a 3-1 victory and the game MVP. He capped his experience by going 6-0 with a 1.10 earned run average and registering 72 strikeouts in 44 and two-thirds innings as a senior, again winning the division MVP. He finished his South Philly tenure with a 22-2 pitching mark and earned All-Catholic status as a hurler and a first baseman all three years. “I enjoyed my time at Neumann-Goretti,” Donato, who wears number 15 for the Royals just like he did for his alma mater, said. “Just my whole time in South Philly has given me a better understanding of putting out my best effort.” While still adjusting to hard fastballs, the young man has already conquered the Arizona heat. “Wow, it was brutal the first few days, with temperatures as high as 112 degrees,” Donato said. “It took me a couple weeks to adjust, but I’m over the heat now.” Donato and the other newbies will remain together through Aug. 29. Depending on their results and his output, he could end up receiving an invitation to a six-week instructional league. His talent could then lead him through the Royals system, with stops in Idaho, North Carolina, Illinois, Delaware, Arkansas and Nebraska likely. A Delaware assignment would make him a Wilmington Blue Rock, which would enable his friends and family to see him as a Class A-Advanced player. “I can only do my part on the field,” Donato said. “The organization is stacked with good players, so I’m going to give my all to even think about making the majors.” If he earns time with the parent club, he will certainly take aim at its stadium’s 330foot right-field fence. Having smoked two right field blasts in a ’10 Carpenter Cup game, he has the power and confidence to delight fans. “I always want whatever team I’m on to grow,” he said, “or I wouldn’t step out on the diamond.” SPR

Of those 24-hour periods, few figure to foster as much enjoyment as June 6, when the Kansas City Royals made him the 793rd selection in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
