hough rain hindered many performers at Saturday’s ART/GAGE festival along the 1000 block of South Street, the clouds kept quiet long enough for Kabita Bastola to shine. The 15-yearold commenced a celebration of Nepalese culture by giving a dance display, then watched 10 female elders honor their background through singing and dancing. Their presence highlighted their refugee identity and helped Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, 1020-22 South St., to stage the fifth edition of its largest one-day event. See ART/GAGE page 8

Anderson Recreation Center, 744 S. 17th St., where Bandura formed the Monarchs, named after Robinson’s Kansas City-based Negro League team, in 1995.
