An archaeological excavation led a City-hired company to find remnants of a two-century-old cemetery beneath a Queen Village playground.

H ■ A Whitman lacrosse star is hoping to situate her high school squad among the city’s elite.

istorian Terry Buckalew discovered a 19thcentury African American cemetery under Weccacoe Playground, 405-25 Queen St., six years ago. He was doing research for a lm project and stumbled upon the name of a person who was buried at the unknown Queen Village graveyard. The Friends of Weccacoe Playground and Queen Village Neighbors Association have been in the

process of revamping the site, with plans to contribute new playspaces, flower beds, trees, seating, maintenance and stormwater mitigation by next year. “We had a group in our neighborhood planning the renovations for five years,” Jeff Hornstein, the civic’s president, said. When the City became aware of the playground’s historical significance, it limited the future renovations to avoid damaging any of the remains and then closed the recreational spot from July 22 to 26 for an archaeological excavation to confirm the

presence of the remains and preserve the burial ground. The goals of the excavation were to find out how extended the cemetery was and how deep the graves were to ensure that the renovation of the playground would not damage the graves or any other remains, Buckalew said. The City hired URS Corp., a San-Franciscobased company with a Center City location, to complete the work. See WECCACOE PLAYGROUND page 10

a double lung transplant, but instead a double lobe transplant (“Saving lives, July 25). The controversy is that 60 percent of the lung tissue was destroyed to fit the two lower lobes into her tiny body. The controversy those of us who have children on the lung transplant list is that the Murnaghans used the media and the general public to get what they wanted, disregarding everything in their path. Now people will believe they should be rated higher or the kid with the cutest picture on Facebook will believe they should get their lungs first, ignoring standard medical practice where not only is compatibility and severity of disease used, but also the outlook and prognosis of the quality of life of the recipient. That is what most of us find distasteful about this whole situation. Godspeed to Sarah on her recovery; it’s a long hard road she has ahead of her, and I hope she keeps fighting, but her parents set a bad precedent with their campaign. I thought it was a bit much (Word on the Street, July 25). There are so many people who are so fascinated with the royal family. On the other hand, it is better than the constant negative context that is on the news daily. Silvia Puglia-Velykis

I loved the days of the newspaper because I worked at a newspaper. The news today is only gone wild because the world has changed so very much in the past year. When all has changed, we have to flow with it. If anyone is tired of any negative news, then be my guest — bring back the good ole days. Costa Lucci

Although I am not a fan of the royal family, I think it is a refreshing change from all of the negative news we’ve been getting. A baby was born, and that’s always wonderful news. I am a daughter of the king of kings, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Cat-astrophic discovery A Grays Ferry man was arrested when authorities located cats and piles of bones inside his home. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor

A

man who had no electricity or running water in his home is now in jail for animal cruelty since multiple cats were living in unsanitary conditions. “We received complaints from some neighbors,” Wendy A. Marano, Pennsylvania Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ communications manager, said. “We went down there a couple times to get in, and they wouldn’t let us in.” Officers’ sense of smell and sight led authorities to receive a search warrant Friday. Upon their entrance, animals scattered, resulting in six live cats being rescued, three cats found dead and a possum located in the house, along with Leonardo Vianale, 52, who purchased the property for $1 Nov. 5, 2012, according to property records, and an uncharged companion. Vianale was arrested and charged with

Pipe dream An observant resident kept a vacant South of South property from losing copper piping last week. A 37-year-old man reported hearing noise from a vacant property next to his home on the 1000 block of South Bouvier Street and seeing someone bending pipes in the rear of the space at 7:25 p.m. July 24, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Authorities allegedly spotted the figure carrying copper piping and following a call to the property’s owner that revealed nobody had permission to be there, arrested Port Richmond resident Gregory Moore, 28. Moore also allegedly had tools, a tool bag and narcotics on him, Tolliver said. He was charged with burglary, criminal trespassing, possession of an instrument of crime, theft, receiving stolen property and a narcotics violation, according to court records. His $5,000 bail was not posted as of press time.

Hard knock life A Point Breeze robbery left five individuals with a lesson on when and when not to answer the door. The victims, males ages 22 to 26, notified authorities at 11:47 p.m. July 25 after falling prey to someone who demanded entrance into a house on the 1900 block of Tasker Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Ordering the occupants to the floor, the offender relieved them of their money and phones. The intruder was described as a black

nine counts of animal cruelty, according to court records. His $5,00 bail had not been posted as of press time. More charges could follow after forensic testing determines what else was living there. “We don’t know how many animals exactly because there were piles of bones,” Marano said. “We don’t know if they are all cats or dogs or what they were.” The state of the building was in poor shape, with holes in the ceiling and roof and human and animal waste throughout. Humane law enforcement officers will revisit the site again to see if any other animals have returned, but will not be able to enter the building. “On June 26, L&I inspectors inspected the property and declared it to be imminently dangerous, due to structural issues, and unfit for habitation, due to electrical hazards and drainage violations,” Rebecca Corcoran Swanson, a department spokesperson, said. SPR male in his 20s, 6-foot to 6-foot-2, with a muscular build, clean cut facial hair, a light to medium complexion and wearing a darkcolored long-sleeve shirt and dark-colored jeans with an “H”-emblazoned white belt. Pedal mettle A brave bicycle owner thwarted a potential thief Monday in South of South. The 45-year-old man left his ride unlocked outside Ultimo, 2149 Catharine St. While inside the coffee shop, he noticed someone inspecting his possession, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Stepping outside to confront the observer, he pushed the peruser after he tried to run off with it. The two fell to the ground, with the offender punching the victim’s face then fleeing westbound on Catharine, Tolliver said. The complainant, who denied immediate medical attention after suffering knee and elbow scrapes and reporting back pain, retained the bike. The offender was described as a black male, age 19, 6-foot, with a thin build, short black hair and wearing a blue Nike T-shirt, dark-colored capri pants and black Chuck Taylor sneakers. The City continues to investigate what caused WWW.ENSGOLDBUYERDIRECT.COM an explosion and three collapse IN THE HEART OFbuildings JEWELERSto ROW in Whitman Monday. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor

Police and fire responders arrived on the scene to find three buildings collapsed and a small fire to extinguish Monday, according to authorities. A 40-year-old man, who was working inside 428 when the explosion occurred, was in the middle of the street with severe burns to his upper body. Medics treated him at the scene before transporting him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He later was transferred to Temple University Hospital’s Burn Unit where he remained in critical condition at press time. “We have not spoken to the contractor. Right now the contractor is intubated, and we haven’t had the chance to do a formal interview,” Philadelphia Fire Department’s Deputy Commissioner Derrick Sawyer said Tuesday. Five others were rescued from the rubble of the adjoining houses, authorities said. On one side, a 34-year-old man, 29-yearold woman and 1-month-old boy were inside when the walls began to crumble. The man was able to crawl out of the debris with the child in his arms and pulled the woman out. A 35-year-old man and a 15-year-old continued on page 10

“M

y recliner shook and I heard a bang. I thought a truck hit a house,” Vera Fee of the 300 block of Daly Street said Monday afternoon. Neighbors in Whitman admitted to smelling gas Sunday night going into Monday, but the city’s gas company maintains it received no complaints. A gas explosion caused three homes to collapse around 11 a.m. Monday, but the cause of the blast is still under investigation. “We went back through our records and there was not a single call to PGW reporting any odor in that area or suspected leaking gas,” Barry O’Sullivan, Philadelphia Gas Works’ director of corporate communication, said Tuesday, encouraging residents to call the company at 215-235-1212 even if they suspect a gas leak. At 11:09 a.m. Monday, a gas explosion caused 428 Daly Street to crumble to the ground, which also resulted in a residence on either side to fall as well. Although Kiky Ng, of the 400 block of Wolf Street, did not detect the smell, she said one of her neighbors called to complain about the gas odor Sunday night, but she was unsure to whom the neighbor reported it. Ng, however, did hear the explosion the following morning. “I thought the guy who fixed the roof fell

off,” she said of her initial reaction before she ran outside and saw the aftermath of a quick flame and smoke when she looked to the north side of Wolf Street, which touches the rear side of Daly.

Jolly journeys A Bella Vista organization uses runs to prepares pooches for placement in forever homes. ■ By Dom Gulli Review Intern

any canines are fortunate to receive some much needed time outdoors, playing fetch or running alongside their master. Even in the city, dog owners take their four-legged friends to an area park or dog run for exercise and a breath of fresh air. But what about their counterparts stuck in a shelter while waiting to nd their forever home? That’s where the Monster Milers come in. The Bella Vista-based nonprofit teams up with Philly shelters, like PAWS Spay/ Neuter and Wellness Clinic, 2900 Grays Ferry Ave., and trains volunteers to take yet-to-be-adopted dogs out for runs on designated routes. “[The dogs] get to release some of that pent-up energy. It eases their stress levels, which means they are more calm when a potential adopter comes to meet them. It’s a win-win,” Maria Hooper, a volunteer who works primarily out of the Grays Ferry location, said. The resident of 12th and Dickinson streets will lead a group run from the clinic, which generally holds a similar trek the third Saturday of each month, at 11 a.m. Aug. 17. The experience offers potential volunteers a glimpse of what is expected before they commit to taking an orientation and come in for at least two monthly runs. Hooper, one of hundreds of trained volunteers, first heard about the Milers a few years ago, when they were operating only out of the PAWS Adoption Center in Old City. “At the time, joining the organization wouldn’t have worked with my schedule,” Hooper said. “Then last spring a friend of mine mentioned she was going to a Milers’ orientation at the Grays Ferry PAWS clinic, which reignited my interest.” The Milers take out for runs dogs who are being taken care of at the PAWS Clinic; this allows pooches a “great outlet for energy,” according to Melissa Levy, PAWS executive director, said. “It helps present [the dogs] better to potential adopters,” she said. “It lets their personalities shine through.” For Hooper, connecting with the dogs is one of the most important aspects of being a Miler. “I love meeting new dogs and reconnecting with those who have unfortunately already been stuck in the shelter a few weeks

or longer,” she said. “You learn their lovable personalities and goofy quirks, and get to see their strengths and progress in training.” Levy agrees that working with Milers allows the dogs to connect with runners and helps with their promotion through “the social circles that members of the Milers belong to, which ultimately helps PAWS rescue more dogs and allows them to move through the system faster.” Hooper adopted her dog, Chego, a 40-pound pitbull mix, from the city shelter, Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia, from which PAWS rescues animals, too. “Chego enjoys a short jog now and then, but when he’s not up for a run I always know there are others waiting at the shelter,” she said. “Additionally, I have run into four or five former Miler dogs who have been adopted from PAWS. I’ve caught a few owners off guard when I announce that I know their dog, but they like to hear that their dog was well-loved even when it was in the shelter.” THE MILERS ARE a branch of the Monster

Minders, 916 League St., an award-winning company that provides dog-walking and sitting services through Carrie Maria and her husband, Lindsay, who launched it in 2005. Its services caught much attention from the community, leading to national regard, which then skyrocketed the program’s visibility, securing a Best of Philly for Urban Pet Sitting a year later. “We were pretty gobsmacked by it,” Maria said. She founded the Milers in 2010 to allow excitable dogs from PAWS’ adoption program to show their true colors, and for adopters to get a better feel for the dogs’ genuine identity. Volunteer Kelsey Gibbons adopted a high-energy dog, but as her pet got older and calmed down, she wanted to continue to run with pooches to stay motivated as

she trained for a marathon. “They’re very reliable running partners,” Gibbons said. Growing up with the lively breed of cocker spaniels, she has always been a dog lover and found joining the Milers a natural choice. “The best thing about working with the Milers is learning more about different breeds of dogs and giving back to the community,” the Fairmount resident, who lived at 26th and Catharine streets when she began volunteering more than a year ago, said. Another helper, West Philly’s Rebecca Baranowski, learned of the program through a newspaper article. “I’ve been a runner for a long time and thought this would be a way to get out an extra day during the week and run,” she said. She recalled a time she went to the shelter to take a dog out for a run, but found only two Chihuahuas there. “They’re not exactly the best for running,” she said. And from time to time, the canine is not cooperative during a long-distance outing. “Sometimes you’ll go half a mile or a mile and the dog will decide, ‘I’m done,’” she said with a laugh. The next big event on the horizon for the Milers is their first 5K run. The Rescue Run 5K will benefit them and promote rescue and adoption at the Navy Yard, 4747 S. Broad St., 10 a.m. Sept. 29. After the race, there will be a Rescue Rally featuring adoptable pets and food vendors. “Everybody’s looking forward to that,” Baranowski said. Even when it’s just a volunteer-and-dog duo running in the neighborhoods surrounding the clinic, onlookers react. “Every time I’m out running with a dog in their orange ‘Adopt Me’ vest, I’m always struck by how many smiles we get from passers-by — people in their cars or out on a walk,” Hooper said. “They often stop to pet the dog and to ask where they can get more information on adoptable dogs.” The Milers hope to expand the program to other cities so shelter dogs everywhere can get the exercise and love that they want and need. “We love working with the Milers,” Levy said. “We hope to work with them for years to come.” SPR

WECCACOE PLAYGROUND continued from page 1 “The excavations we did were able to confirm the cemetery boundaries. We found the walls,” Douglas Mooney, the senior archaeologist at URS Corp., said of the cemetery found to be located in the southwest corner of the playground. The archaeological team was not hired to remove or unearth the remains — only to collect information on the grounds, Mooney said. “We uncovered no human remains. All we found was evidence of the cemetery,” Mooney, who added that his team found only the top graves, as burials were stacked on top of one another, said. “The excavations we did were all very shallow. We came to the top of the cemetery, two-anda-half feet below the surface.” Buckalew, a Center City resident, who was present during the excavations, said the archaeological team was able to identify between 20 to 30 buried coffins thanks to variations in the dirt. “The soil color is darker around coffins because at the time, coffins were made of natural materials,” Buckalew said. The most recent excavation confirmed historical facts related to the cemetery. “On Thursday afternoon, a headstone was unearthed,” Buckalew said. “It was Amelia Brown, who died April 3, 1818. The gravestone was not on top of her grave. In the past, the cemetery was vandalized.”

EXPLOSION continued from page 7 female were on the opposite side when the walls shook and fell, authorities said. Both escaped. A 27-year-old woman and a 2-month-old boy were inside a home across the street that suffered damage when its windows blew out after the explosion. Aside from the contractor, the other injured parties had minor injuries for which they were transported to Thomas Jefferson Hospital where they were treated and released. Seventy homes were evacuated on Daly and Wolf streets initially, but that number dropped to 28, including the south side of Daly and 423 to 435 on the north side, Tuesday. Some homes on that block remained without electric, gas and/or water at press time. John H. Taggart School, 400 W. Porter St., served as a Red Cross shelter, which housed about 14 people Monday, but closed that evening, as those who remained displaced found shelter with family and friends. The home formerly at 428 Daly St. was “thoroughly inspected” 14 times between the time permits were issued and a final visit Friday, Mayor Michael Nutter said at a press conference he held to try to dispel gossip flooding the media about the cause

IN THE 19TH century, African Americans had to be buried outside the city limits unless the cemetery was attached to a church. Prior to the Consolidation Act of 1854, Queen Village was situated in Southwark, a suburb along the Delaware River. According to Buckalew’s research, in 1810, Rev. Richard Allen and the trustees of Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church bought a plot of land outside Philadelphia, south of what is now known as South Street. This cemetery was created for church members and the poor that could not afford a proper burial. Allen’s mission was to provide “burial aid” by giving an appropriate space and loans that were not always paid back. “The last burial was in 1864. The church abandoned the cemetery because they had no money. It turned into a community lot in 1889. The city went to build a pocket park to reduce crime and give young people a place to play,” Buckalew said. However, the historian had trouble finding information about the cemetery. “I came to find that there was very little in the historical record about the graveyard and what was available was scarce, scattered and not user-friendly,” Buckalew wrote on his blog, preciousdust.blogspot.com. He was amazed that information associated with such a famous African-American church was nowhere to be found. After taking a deeper look in diverse documents about the graveyard, Buckalew found the of the explosion, which was not released by press time. “There is, although, a lot of speculation as to what was happening in the house on Monday morning,” he said. “Of course, I’m not in the position to truly and completely address rumors or speculation — often that is what they are. All work requiring permits was completed by last Friday.” Shortly after SCK Investments LLC, 2653 Camac St., purchased 428 Daly St. for $65,000 March 15, according to property records, the City issued the company four permits — one each for building, mechanical and plumbing in April as well as one for electrical in June, Nutter said. All but the latter were completed by Friday’s check, with the City receiving the final paperwork Tuesday for the electrical permit, for which work finished Friday, too. No complaints had been received except June 24 when an inspector noted some minor repairs needed on the hot water heater. Those were completed Friday. The only remaining tasks consisted of “cosmetic work for which no permit is needed” Nutter said. A contractor who was onsite completing “tile, floorboard” jobs during the blast may not be responsible, Nutter said. The cause remains unknown, pending the completion of a Fire Marshal’s Office investigation. “There has been circling around I guess

name of the cemetery, “Bethel Burying Ground,” on the death records for the Philadelphia Department of Health. It also was referred to as “Queen Burial Ground,” but the actual name of the cemetery was never found since the official church records were destroyed in 1850, Buckalew’s blog notes. He was able to identify the names of 1,500 African-American Philadelphians, as well as their ages, causes of death, occupations and addresses, through the archives. Buckalew submitted his research to the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania so people could complete their family trees. After hearing about the playground’s renovation, Buckalew contacted the City’s Historical Commission and Society Hill’s Mother Bethel to protect the remains. When the neighborhood group became aware of the burial ground, it formed a partnership with the church in order to commemorate the site appropriately. “We set up some principles — that it would be a place for kids and a place to remember the past,” Hornstein, a resident of the 300 block of Queen Street, said. All the information gathered on Bethel Burying Ground will be sent to the Historical Commission. “This was a very interesting and challenging project. We generated a lot of information on the cemetery,” Mooney said. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

A Point Breeze resident will launch a website exploring transformational events in locals’ lives. ■ By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

“P

eople in Philadelphia don’t say ‘Hi’ enough or try to interact with one another as much as they could,” Howard Pinder said last week at Circle of Hope, 1125 S. Broad St. “I sense, though, that they yearn for authentic connections because everyone has a tale worth hearing.” The 29-year-old resident of the 1700 block of Wharton Street will affirm his commitment to camaraderie tomorrow night at the Passyunk Square worship site when he launches “Tell Me Your Story,” a web-based project through which he is chronicling interviewees’ accounts of life-altering experiences. He is using the initiative to encourage engagement and to remind participants and perusers of an often forgotten commonality. “We need to stress that everyone has value, especially to God,” the Point Breeze occupant said. “We’ve all had transformational times and can gain a better grasp of our connectivity if we share them.” Pinder commenced his curious quest in October, making it an offshoot of a similar Circle of Hope concept that relied on written submisS t a f f p h o t o b y K at h r y n P o o l e

LIFESTYLES sions. Fond of the explanations, he believed additional means could yield even more revelatory descriptions. “I wanted to take it to the streets to prove that people want intimate interactions, even with strangers,” Pinder, whose lead coordinator role for Circle of Hope has him overseeing its 60 networks, or cells, across four congregations, including the Passyunk Square one, said. “I found it amazing how much they chose to share.” Armed with zeal and a “Tell Me Your Story” sign, he spent the end of last year and considerable parts of this one traveling along South Broad Street, exuding his affinity for humanism by gathering 80 pieces — 50 of which will appear on the website. Owing to his frequent disclosure as a Christian, he found subjects more receptive to his presence and learned of bouts with betrayal, death and heartbreak yet also reliance on forgiveness and hope. “In this digitalized age, it seems we lack enough opportunities for worthwhile communication,” Pinder said. “With this, I’ve combined technology and something more powerful — face-to-face correspondence — to strengthen my belief that we’re not nameless faces; we’re vital contributors to our communities.” In covering numerous neighborhoods,

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

the story storer witnessed an increase in his personal affection for the global family, a vibe that aids him in his Circle of Hope duties. Those chores find him courting solidarity among those with whom he shares his journey to salvation. “This idea has always stemmed from my interest in understanding how people have shown their resolve,” Pinder said of “Tell Me Your Story” and his desire to add more sagas — filmed or written — to his brainchild. “I have a great spot in my heart for those who are searching.” THE ARDENT DOCUMENTER can number himself among the admired knowledge seekers. With a pastor for a father, he could have engendered a deep religious identity, yet none materialized until the Vermont native moved to Philly to attend Temple University. “I didn’t feel too pulled in a particular direction, but by the time college began, I was becoming existential and looking for answers and meaning,” Pinder said. “As I gathered more interest, I knew I would want to learn from people with similar feelings.” He learned of Circle of Hope, whose website touts its function as creating “an environment where people can connect with God and act for redemption, respond-

displays of resolve. He and his Circle of Hope peers try to extend the message that nobody is an island through public meetings and home visits, with Pinder always seeing fellowship as the key to progress. “That’s kind of what inspired me to launch the site now,” Pinder said. “I’m always looking for an excuse to gather.” The gregarious figure intends to include his story among the contributions, as it contains a look at his former time at the crossroads, a span that he capped by realizing explaining his doubt would prove more healthy than bottling it. “We should all have chances to share what’s dearest to us and what gives us pause,” Pinder, who recently celebrated his first anniversary with wife Katie, said. “I’ve been fortunate to know many people who have an interest in moving people from silent states to leadership roles.” As he prepares for tomorrow’s 7 p.m. celebration, he wants more people to learn of their unified energy. “I’m a conduit for a greater message, and it’s that you’re valuable,” Pinder said. “Don’t let yourself forget that.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Now eight years into his relationship with the space, which aligns itself primarily with Christianity’s Anabaptist tradition, he considers himself blessed to interact with likewise ponderous people who take their knowledge of an unstable world and use it to foster unity. “I immediately felt this empowering sense of love and acceptance, and that has continued to the point where I’m looking to spread the same attitude among larger populations, so, for me, ‘Tell Me Your Story’ has become a great way not only to address others but ourselves, too,” Pinder, who furthered his preparation for the labors of leading by attending the King of Prussia-based Palmer Theological Seminary, said. “We all need to open up more if we’re to gauge what drives us instead of making assumptions based on something such as a person’s exterior.” His approached parties divulged monumental occasions to him in 60-second clips, with Pinder singling out a woman who forgave her son’s killer and a man who did the same for his childhood abuser as compelling entries that touch on humans’ struggle to level vulnerability with

The Zimmerman verdict

T

he folks protesting the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin claim the verdict shows our entire system of justice is corrupt. Zimmerman’s supporters claim the verdict totally exonerated him in the killing. They are both wrong. To some, the case is simple. A black, unarmed teenager on his way home was shot and killed after a confrontation with an armed adult. One newspaper ran a headline “Open season on black boys” after the Zimmerman verdict. But it had been open season on innocent members of the African-American community long before Zimmerman was acquitted, and most of us outside of the black community neither noticed or cared much because it was black-on-black crime. Sickening stories are covered on almost a daily basis on the evening news involving innocent people getting caught in the crossfire of drug or gang wars. A little girl is sitting on her front step eating a bag of potato chips and is killed by a stray bullet. A young boy is dribbling a basketball in his neighborhood playground and is cut down by a bullet fired by God knows who for God knows what reason. An elderly woman cowers in her home and is afraid to go to the corner store for fear of getting clubbed over the head and her handbag taken. So, yes, it is open season and has been in the inner city for some time, and it wasn’t because of the Zimmerman verdict. Some of Zimmerman’s supporters don’t understand the verdict showed only there was not enough evidence to convict him of second-degree murder or involuntary manslaughter, the only two options open to the jury. Some jury members have reportedly indicated they believed Zimmerman was culpable and wished there were other options. Make no mistake about it, he provoked the confrontation, and despite the verdict, bears a heavy moral judgment that should keep him awake the rest of his life. Acquittal is not the same as morally innocent. The Rev. Al Sharpton’s rallies are calling for justice. And I understand what the president meant when we said we have to put the frustration of the black community in context. That context is of justice largely denied that infamous trials involving the Scottsboro Boys, Emmett Till and Medgar Evers exemplified. Law enforcement’s use of racial profiling in “stop and frisk” laws and the seeming indifference to violent crime when the victim is black have cre-

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

ated the basis for many black people believing the system is stacked against them. Our prisons are disproportionately filled with African-Americans, many times because of minor drug charges or simply the inability to afford a competent counsel. None of this means we should conclude the Zimmerman verdict was tainted. The difference between this case and the historic injustice of the Till case, to use an example, is there was no overwhelming evidence to the contrary in the Zimmerman trial. It is terribly unfair to the jurors that they are being painted as bigots. The prosecutors in the Zimmerman case made several grievous mistakes. They overcharged, giving no opportunity to those jurors who felt Zimmerman was guilty, but of a lesser crime. Incredibly, several of the prosecution’s key witnesses actually bolstered the arguments of the defense. The prosecution failed to prove that Zimmerman was guilty of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, not only because of its own incompetence, but also because there simply was a lack of solid evidence. In view of that fundamental failure, the jury had no choice but to acquit, which should have come as no surprise even to those who only casually followed the dayto-day events of the trial. The media reported the prosecution’s ineptness throughout the trial along with the lack of evidence that would support a conviction. I believe Zimmerman profiled Martin, if not for his race, at least for his black hoodie. My father was a decorated member of the police force, and he always feared arming wannabe cops, who sometimes are untrained and overzealous men who want desperately to prove their masculinity by flashing a badge and carrying a gun. I recall several lunchtime conversations I had with some African-American friends who also happened to be moms. They discussed the fear they felt each time their sons left the house because the police could stop them for no reason other than that they are young and black. These moms would give their sons specific instructions: Don’t give the police any back talk; don’t reach in your pocket suddenly or under the dashboard. Chances are Trayvon’s mom may have given him similar warnings when he went out. Trayvon paid with his life for a century of misunderstanding and suspicions between the races. Some say the boy should have run instead of confronting Zimmerman, but running away is sometimes mistaken for an admission of guilt. Weep not, however, for the verdict, for what really caused Trayvon’s death is the chasm still separating the races in America, that no matter what progress we have made and we have made progress, continues to haunts us.SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Mariko (Tao Okamoto), from left, helps Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in his ultimate quest, testing his physical and emotional limits as a mortal in Japan.

Howl about that ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

T

he best choice made by the folks behind “The Wolverine” was isolating their eponymous X-Man (Hugh Jackman) from his popular comic-book cohorts. In plucking the clawed, feral mutant from the world of Storm, Cyclops, et al (even “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” featured classic baddies Sabretooth and Deadpool), this new film, set after the events of “X-Men: The Last Stand,” plays, for the most part, like a gritty character study, even proving demure in its analysis of Wolverine’s moral and existential woes. Which is certainly not to say “The Wolverine” is without action. Directed by James Mangold, the Marvel flick kicks into high gear once it migrates from an American wilderness, where Wolverine has been living in the woods, to Tokyo, where Yashida (Hal Yamanouchi), a dying man the immortal Wolverine rescued in WWII, requests the presence of his savior in hopes of acquiring his healing powers. Knowing Wolverine is plagued by the guilt of killing a manic Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) for the greater good, Yashida thinks the brute warrior would gladly relinquish eternity. But, of course, there’s more to the story. And there’s surely more to be seen. The Japan setting proves an invaluable part of the movie’s appeal, providing an exotic locale that’s both novel and befitting for Wolverine. And the epic fights therein are terrific to behold, particularly a frantic battle at a high-society funeral, and an unforgettable scuffle atop a speeding bullet train that will make you gawk at its awesomeness while giggling at its absurdity. Of course, this brand-name summer tentpole ultimately sticks too close to

the rulebook, concluding with a strata of deceptions, a speech from the bad guy, a sacrifice or two and a standoff with an implausibly large supervillain. But there’s plenty to enjoy before and beyond these conventional bits, including the physical dedication of all involved. Japanese actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Rila Fukushima make for expert sword-wielders, and Jackman’s consummate devotion to this character will make every viewer feel lazy. The musclebound star looks as fit and beastly as ever. In true X-Men form, it’s uncanny.

Recommended Rental To the Wonder R Available Tuesday

It’s easy to understand why certain viewers can’t warm to Terrence Malick’s filmmaking, particularly in his later career, which sees his work grow more elliptical and interpretational than ever. But even if you find yourself unmoved by “To the Wonder,” Malick’s love-triangle, “Tree of Life” follow-up starring Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko and Rachel McAdams, it’s still the fluidly handsome work of a master, who’s driving interest has become the search of life’s meaning through art. Donna’s Chicken Delight

Dining South

D

A

onna Collins brings a new taste to a favorite protein with her Chicken Delight. This creamy meal needs some time in the oven, which allows the cook time to prepare pasta and vegetables as sides for the baked chicken. The resident of the 100 block of Snyder Avenue’s delightful dish has enough flavor and crunch to satisfy the entire family. SPR

INGREDIENTS:

Bella Vista Italian eatery offers a hot summer dinner special. With the exception of Friday nights, La Fourno Ristorante Trattoria, 636 South St., provides a date night dinner special for $50. For more information or to make a reservation, call 215-627-9000 or visit lafourno.com. SPR

DIRECTIONS:

4 boneless chicken breasts 1 can of cream of chicken soup 1/4 cup of milk 1/2 cup of seasoned bread crumbs 2 tablespoons of butter, melted 4 slices of Provolone cheese

are sometimes too sweet, but Blue Belly BBQ simmers them with the right amount of ketchup and spice. While we watched the chef prepare our dinner, we were given small ramekins for take home sauce. Blue Belly BBQ prepares three from scratch: sweet, hot and vinegar. “Make sure you taste the beef and pork before you add any sauce,” the chef said. Both the sweet and hot sauces were thick and rich. I preferred the sweet one because it was not cloyingly sweet. Blue Belly BBQ fills a much-needed void in Bella Vista. The moderately priced restaurant is a place I would fre= Very Good

od, it smells good in here,” I said as soon as Edward and I stepped into Blue Belly BBQ, a cash-only BYOB. The aroma that wafted through the small restaurant made me pine for all the marvelous barbecue I have enjoyed in the South. Blue Belly has a few wooden counter stools and simple tables and chairs, but it also does a busy takeout business. The small menu features sandwiches and platters. All of the sandwiches come with french fries and red cabbage coleslaw. For a platter, a choice of three sides is a most generous offer. We decided to take dinner home on an early, cool evening. The smoked meat kept its heat while the fries required a few minutes in a dry sauté pan. The slow-roasted pig sandwich ($13) was the big winner. Juicy shreds of pork, filled with flavor, were piled high on a soft bun and topped with pickled fennel and mustard sauce. One bite and I was hooked. The use of fennel slaw in place of a mayonnaise-based coleslaw was right up my barbecue alley. The combination of tender pork, crunchy fennel and a homemade mustard sauce prompted me to remember this recipe in order to mix up a batch at home the next time I roast some pork. The reheat on the fries worked well. They were not too salty. The St. Louis spare ribs ($16) retained a smoky flavor and aroma. I liked the seasoned dry rub used in their preparation. We found the texture OK; the pork did not fall off the bone, but it

wasn’t chewy either. The big disappointment was the Painted Hills beef brisket ($15). Everyone has his or her notion of how barbecued brisket should look and taste. For me, the beef must be tender and juicy. It should be thinly sliced against the grain in long slices. Blue Belly BBQ serves chunks of beef, which, although tasty, did not earn merits in the texture department. It would be difficult to make a sandwich with any leftovers. Classic side dishes help the beef or pork shine at any barbecue restaurant. I liked the flavor and mouthfeel of the mac and cheese. The pasta was cooked al dente and prepared with cheese that melted with ease as I gently reheated it. I found the corn cakes bland and underwhelming. The braised greens took me right back to North Carolina. Collards are rolled into a chiffonade, placed in a big pot with a piece of pork, covered with water and gently cooked until they literally melt in one’s mouth. Bits of shredded juicy pork mingled with the greens to produce a balanced taste. These hit the mark, although I thought there was a bit too much hot sauce in the mix. Fingering potato salad was another side I recommend. Small rounds of potato were perfectly cooked, seasoned and tossed with the right touch of mayonnaise. Sometimes potato salad turns to mush, but this one held up nicely. Red cabbage slaw imparted a slight pickled flavor and could have been pepped up a bit with the addition of celery, carrot or onion. Baked beans can be tricky. They

aria di Marco’s parents owned land in her hometown of Abruzzi, Italy. The rest of her family worked the land each day, but she found her niche elsewhere. “Me, I was too small for the farm,” she said, “so what I did, I chose to cook in the house.” Her inside chores began at age 13, and in her childhood kitchen, she learned to cook Italian cuisine, serving meals at exactly noon, per her father’s wishes. She became engulfed in the restaurant business after meeting her late-husband, Claudio Chiavatti, who was the maitre d’ in an Italian hotel. Over the course of 35 years, the couple owned about 10 restaurants, but nothing compares to Mamma Maria’s Ristorante, 1637 E. With her team having failed to score in its first three games, the then-freshman entered Hallahan’s annals by depositing the inaugural goal in program history. “I came close three times before that one, and I was just so happy to get us going,” Alynn said. “It’s always felt great to represent Hallahan, and that day made me especially proud.” THOUGH THE YOUNG ladies valiantly competed in that road tilt and their other

Alynn selected Hallahan out of four schools, including The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., partially because the parochial institution would be fielding its first lacrosse team. Knowing her enrollment would secure tests against notable opponents, she again committed to absorbing every lesson and devoting her energy to garnering renown for the debuting lineup. “Being new, we knew we were underdogs, but we didn’t go out there feeling inferior,” she said. “I knew, too, we’d be a work in progress, but I believed good stuff could come our way.” The confident competitor suffered an injury during the March 26 opener against

aat southphillyreview.com/blogs.php matches, they could not become acquaintances with the win column. Alynn, however, developed into a force, with 37 goals and frequent kudos from the opposition relieving some of the sting from the 0-11 campaign. “I love the competitiveness of lacrosse, and I loved that we put ourselves out there and showed who we are, even if that couldn’t combine with any victories to reflect how much we care about playing,” she said. The sophomore-to-be earned SecondTeam All-Catholic distinction for her feats, an honor that shocked and humbled her. She experienced similar feelings June 3 when she tried out for the Under Armour All-American team at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Though she did not earn placement on the squad, even the opportunity to be among likewise fiery players thrilled her. “I was around so many girls who eat and sleep lacrosse,” Alynn said of her latespring chance. “With a lot more practice, maybe I could one day approach their dedication, but even if that happens, I’ll still have other interests.” In addition to her stick duties for Hallahan, she plays varsity basketball and soccer, with softball chores for SEYAA and a Fishtown league giving her a quartet of responsibilities she would not part with for the world. “I keep up with my school work, too, because nothing is more important,” the second-honors pupil said. “I especially like history because of how often it seems stuff comes back to repeat itself.” With that in mind, Alynn hopes her team can avoid another winless season, but even if the losses mount, she will feel fulfilled as long as she senses progress. Whenever Hallahan claims its premier triumph, she hopes to be the winning-goal tallier, but more to show her commitment to the program than to play the hero. “We can be a very good team,” Alynn said. “I have soccer and basketball season first, but when I get out there for lacrosse, I’m going to be a vocal leader who helps us prove how well a team can do when everyone works together.” SPR

■ By Joseph Myers ith so many inuences contesting for adolescents’ attention, Alynn Phelan has decided nothing will outdo her focus on athletic competition. Through her latest example of allegiance, the four-sport figure is literally looking to stick it to her foes, as she is striving to transform the John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School lacrosse team into a contender, with recent personal recognition helping her to believe she will become an even more impassioned leader. “I have a busy schedule, but I don’t mind because it teaches me responsibility,” the 15-year-old said Friday at her home on the 2100 block of South Howard Street. “It keeps me away from any trouble and maintains my awareness that I need to fight for what I want to do.” She has reserved consistent spots for lacrosse on that agenda for two years, furthering interest the then-eighth grader at Christopher Columbus Charter School, 1242-46 S. 13th St., initiated through a West Deptford Township unit. Completely new to the game prior to joining New Jersey-based friends for instruction, Alynn excelled early on thanks to her curiosity and the sport’s similarities to other pursuits. “I thought it was easy to pick up because it’s kind of a mix of baseball and soccer,” she said of pastimes that she began, along with basketball and softball, through the Southeast Youth Athletic Association, Seventh and Bigler streets. “It brought out more of my competitive side, too, because I came in inexperienced and really wanted to learn.” With numerous championships through the local organization, she capably played the eager beginner for the Garden State squad and earned roster spots on last year’s Access Lacrosse Under-13 and 14 teams, with the younger group winning the Wildwood-based Morey’s Pier Beach Lacrosse Tournament. “That experience really gave me confidence going into Hallahan,” the teenager, who led the victors in goals, said of prepping for her Center City-situated secondary education site. “I went there ready to be a part of something new and exciting.”

novena to the holy spirit

Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads, so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life You are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank You for all things as You confirm once again that I never want to be separated from You even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with You in eternal glory. Thank You for your mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days and after three days the favor will be granted. The prayer must be published immediately.
