he sour odor of male perspiration. That was the smell of summer in Philadelphia back then. Before the anti-perspirant companies began marketing products to men. Before most people had air conditioning. When we used to flock to neighborhood movie theaters in the summer on torrid summer days because the theaters were “air cooled.” Everybody sat outside in the early evening to get away from the heat and humidity. Our folks didn’t own homes at the shore. They rented. If you were one of the lucky kids, your folks were able to afford to vacation at the shore for a week or so. Before I was a teen, my world was limited to a few city blocks from our house. I’d walk my friend Sal to Mifflin Square to play a game called CHEW THE PEG. Ballplaying was not allowed in that small park where mostly old folks stared as if they were judging us. Young women wheeled baby carriages through the small park. CHEW THE PEG was played with a penknife. It was Sal’s penknife. It seemed to me as if he used it solely to play the game whose rules I no longer remember. My folks would not have trusted me with a penknife. Not that they thought I’d hurt someone with it. Just myself. We used the side street around the corner from our house to play half-ball. Tree Street, where there were no trees. Some of the people that lived on Tree Street hated me. I lived on the main street. Why didn’t I play on my own street? It didn’t matter that my friend lived on Tree Street. It didn’t matter that the half-ball we played with couldn’t break a window as they feared. All that seemed to matter was that I didn’t belong. Strange, but that long-ago feeling of not belonging has still stayed with me. Even now that I am older than the people who hated me back then. When it rained on a summer day, you could find my friend and me in his house playing board games such as PARCHEESI. Sal’s mom was always kind and welcoming. I remember being fascinated that she was of Slovakian descent. At that point in my life, my world was pretty much confined to Italians, Irish, and Jews. It made Sal’s mom seem exotic to these young eyes. Sal’s father was a short, powerfully built man with muscled forearms, kind of like my own father. Both Sal and I had the responsibility of having our younger sibling tag around with us a good part of the day. If there were summer camps back then, either our families didn’t know of them or couldn’t afford them. Summers were great if only because we didn’t have to go to school. We mostly spent our time trying to escape loneliness and boredom. We didn’t visit other parts of the city. Most parents thought it was the school’s responsibility to take you to the zoo or Independence Hall during summer vacation. I spent my days waiting for the week when my folks would rent a room in Atlantic City. Most of mom’s family would be at the shore at the same time. It was a time when most of my folks’ friends were family. We’d all rent in the same area of Atlantic City, the Italian section. Florida See CARDELLA, page 5>>

Light Up the Night, urges SOSNA ahead of event Community event aimed at crime prevention set for Aug. 7 between 6 and 8 p.m. By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

S

outh of South Neighborhood Association has announced its eighth annual Light Up the Night event on Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Julian Abele Park in Graduate Hospital. The family-friendly, community event is being held to raise awareness about safety and crime prevention in the neighborhood. It also encourages residents to get to know their neighbors and to strengthen police-community partnerships. “We’re inviting the neighborhood, said Kristen Albee, the chair of SOSNA’s Safety Committee. “We hope people come out. The event is centered around working an awareness about improving lighting in the streets in the neighborhood. “We encourage residents to turn on outside lights to improve safety and deter crime, Albee said. Albee said SOSNA recently completed a lighting campaign to get people to turn on their outside stoop lights. The neighborhood organization recently awarded more than 50 Dusk to Dawn light bulbs to residents who completed a survey about lighting in the neighborhood.

“A well-lit block is easier to navigate, Albee said. “There is evidence and data that says that well-lit areas deter criminals. Also at the event will be an opportunity for locals to register their bikes with the Philadelphia Police Department. Albee said the city fire department will also be on hand with a fire truck, which children can explore and enjoy. Live music will be performed for adults, along with the opportunity to learn more about the Vision Zero campaign from members of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. Every year Light Up the Night takes place on the same night as National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. According to the National Night Out website, the organization “enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

CARDELLA: Hasn’t been the same

<<Continued from page 4 Avenue. Bellevue Terrace. It was as if the entire population of South Philly had moved to the Shore for that same glorious week. This was Atlantic City before gambling. It was the crown jewel of the Shore. The boardwalk stretched forever. Neon signs lit the sky at night. Neon horses raced to the finish line as SherwinWilliams covered the globe. We waited as we approached the Camel sign until a figure puffed a big smoke ring into the night air. Rolling chairs were lined up along the beach side of the boardwalk. Well-dressed men and women sat in them watching us stroll by. There was an expectancy in the night air. Something exciting seemed about to happen. Anything was possible on the boardwalk on a summer night in Atlantic City. When I became 11 or 12, I fell in love with a baseball team. The Brooklyn Dodgers. The Boys of Summer. No love is quite as deep as that of a

young boy. My parents purchased a huge radio, so I could receive the signal from WMGM in New York. By adroitly twisting and turning that radio on our kitchen table, I could get decent reception, always hoping the signal would return after a trolley passed outside my house. And that’s how I warded off loneliness on summer nights. Listening to the Dodgers. Hearing a young Vin Scully. Practicing impersonating Vin, who urged us to “pop the cap off a frosty bottle of Schaefer Beer, as Jackie Robinson or Duke Snider strode to the plate at Ebbets Field. I never visited Ebbets Field. I dreamed about it. It was, no doubt, more glorious in my memory than it was in person. Ebbets Field was my field of dreams. My Oz. My personal Magic Kingdom. The Dodgers left Brooklyn after the 1957 season. Love lost. I grew up. Summers changed. I could no longer listen to the Dodgers who were now in Los Angeles. I found out that magic isn’t real. Like the Dodgers, life moved on.

South Philly residents take in the 13th Annual East Passyunk Car Show & Street Festival on Sunday, July 29. Below, festival attendees admire a 1926 Ford Model T.

Classics shine at East Passyunk Car Show & Street Festival Annual event filled with wheels, meals and chance for neighbors to get out and meet each other By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

his past Sunday, residents from South Philly and beyond attended the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District’s 13th annual East Passyunk Car Show & Street Festival, a festival filled with classic cars, South Philly eats and opportunities for neighbors to get out and meet each other on a warm summer day. “I’m from the neighborhood,” said South Philly resident Tommy Capewell. “We planned for it and we came down.” Capewell brought his dad to the show, and his dad brought his 1987 Foxbody Ford Mustang. “Last year we couldn’t [make it], but we try to come out every year,” he said. “We love it.”

East Passyunk residents Brian and Jenna Ercolani also made it out to the festival. “We live right here,” Brian said. “We love how much activity there is on this street right here. We just love interacting with the community.” “There’s always great events on Passyunk,” said Jenna. “That’s why we love living here.” Both Brian and Jenna have dads who are gearheads, so coming to car shows was nothing new for them. “My dad has some classic cars so I grew up always going to shows with him,” Brian said. “I really appreciate coming out and seeing these kinds of cars and the work people put into them and the pride they take in them. And you see a lot of cars that you don’t get to see. It might be a year before I get to see one of these cars if I find a car like

this again.” “I go to car shows with my dad and we just walk around cars in a parking lot, which is nice,” Jenna said, “but this has a lot more stuff to do while at the car show, which is fun for me.” Carolyn Zinni, who owns a bridal salon also called Carolyn Zinni, said the

car show and festival have been great for business. “The neighborhood has had such a resurgence,” said Zinni. “It’s just been amazing. New couples who have lived together and now want to tie the knot and get married so the bridal salon has been a great thing.”

Representatives from Grassroots Advocacy for South Philadelphia were also present at the festival and registered more than 10 people to vote. “We wanted to do at least one per hour, so we’ve definitely overachieved,” said GRASP volunteer Dana Pavlichko. One of the biggest highlights of the show was Steve Pastella’s customized 1966 Ford Woody, which looks nothing like it did in 1966. He’s re-customized the car numerous times, but it’s currently painted black and adorned with red and yellow flames. “There’s thousands of people and most of them stopped to look at my car and take pictures of my car,” said Pastella, who bought the car in 1975 and has had it ever since. “This is my favorite show.”

While, at first glance, it may seem the homemade harvest is an ornament to the recess yard, the sprouts’ roots – and leaves – reach beyond what merely meets the eye, stretching into emotional healing and social justice. A home for various Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern herbs, the plantings serve as, quite literally, a melting pot with ancestral sources tracing across the world. Tended by four high school and college students living in Whitman and Chinatown, a garden at Furness is the ongoing product of SumOurRoots – a collaboration of VietLead, an organization that focuses on the welfare of local Vietnamese and Southeast Asian communities, the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia and the Bhuta-

nese Organization of Philadelphia. The community garden also stems from Soil Generation, which is a local “Black and Brown-led coalition of gardeners, farmers, individuals and community-based organizations” aiming to sustain accessibility to land and food resources for people of color. Last summer, after first joining SumOurRoots, the students began brainstorming ways to mend the generation gap between elders and the youth, specifically those who are considered to possess “limited English proficiency,” as nearly 50 percent of Furness students are enrolled in English as a second or foreign language programs, as reported by SPR in May 2018. “It’s not necessarily about what we grow and the crops and how to take care of it,” said Tommy Ngeth, a junior at Mastery Charter School – Thomas Campus. “But, mainly the fact that gardening is just overall a way to heal – in my eyes. … The point is, (students) don’t speak English excellently, and

moving to America, English is a huge part of lifestyle, and not knowing that – it has to be hard on them. They want to blend in with everybody, and that’s not always the case.” “Some of them just wanted a place to feel like home,” added Nicholas Voeun, a junior at Furness. “Where they were from, where their parents were from, where they originated – something that could remind them of their homeland.” After getting the Furness space approved by its principal, Ngeth and his team began hosting monthly meetings to inform the community on the new garden during the spring. However, while planning the garden in its original location behind the building, the team tested lead levels in the paint of a staircase that overlooked the planting beds. To their surprise, they discovered noxious amounts of the element. Although they were forced to move the plots underneath the school’s facade, the poisonous unmasking sparked a

“toxic teachings” commission, encompassing programs to inform students, school-wide petitions and even testimony to Superintendent Dr. William Hite during city council budget hearings in the spring. “As I was talking (to the School Reform Commission,) I got more comfortable with speaking because – what I was saying – I knew it was something I wanted to stop,” Voeun recalled. “We start up with the message of teach out – it’s safer to be outside of school than inside because of the lead contamination,” said Minh Tran, who just finished his freshman year at Community College of Philadelphia. Another major time to inform the community of the issue was in May when the team says close to 200 people came to Furness to help build the garden boxes. Elders from the neighborhood maintain half of them, while the rest are nurtured by the VietLead members. The team explained that tending to the plants is merely one way to create

harmony, as they really hope to sell the grown produce through a farmers market – something they do in a similar garden in Camden. This satisfies their greater goal of establishing accessibility for healthy foods to lower-income demographics. “It’s one of the ways to reduce poverty there. What we give them is a very fresh harvest,” said Kamal Kafley, who just finished his freshman year at Penn State Abington. “For me, urban growing is a way for communities to have access to fresh food,” Tran said. From food injustices to toxic school conditions, the Furness garden ignited a handful of communal campaigns, but for the four young adults, the greenery serves as a chance for personal growth. “I feel as though the garden is just a huge way in allowing me to be my true self in a way,” Ngeth said. “The garden allowed me to be more open-minded. And like just to understand that there is not just one narrative to something.”

SEPTA’s AT&T Station becomes NRG Station Riders will see new signage, maps and interactive screens this month By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

S

EPTA and NRG Energy reached an agreement last week to rename the Broad Street Line’s AT&T Station, located at Broad and Pattison streets, NRG Station. The partnership is expected to generate new revenue for SEPTA’s transit operations, while creating an enhanced rider experience. Starting this month, customers who use NRG Station will see new signage, maps and interactive screens. Also newly available at this and other SEPTA stations will be NRG Go portable power packs people can rent to charge phones and other electronic devices while they travel or attend events at the Sports Complex. “NRG is committed to the community and providing the first-class products and service Philly residents deserve, said Mike Starck, vice president and general manager, NRG Retail East division. “As Philly’s hometown energy supplier, this partnership will allow NRG to engage with hundreds of thousands of people every year and help power them at home, on their way to and from work, for a night out on the town, or headed to the game. We look forward to working with SEPTA on this exciting project at NRG Station and beyond. This partnership is consistent with SEPTA’s mandate to seek alternative sources of revenue. Act 44, a measure passed by state lawmakers

in 2007 to provide funding for transportation in Pennsylvania, called on SEPTA and other transit agencies to bolster efforts to generate non-farebox revenues. As part of this particular partnership, NRG will pay SEPTA $5.3 million over five years for the naming rights. “This agreement with NRG will deliver major benefits to our customers and other taxpayers who help fund the Authority’s operations, said SEPTA Board Chairman Pasquale T. Deon. “The income this generates will go directly toward the everyday costs of running the transit system. The partnership with NRG includes SEPTA’s third major station renaming agreement in recent years. SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel said the agreement exemplifies the Authority’s commitment to enhancing service while being a good steward of funding generated from fare-paying riders and taxpayers. “This NRG Station agreement is a win-win for SEPTA customers, delivering improved amenities while generating new revenues beyond the fare box, Knueppel said. “SEPTA has worked hard to find innovative ways to enhance service while controlling costs, and we will continue to aggressively pursue more opportunities moving forward. NRG Energy is an energy company with headquarters located in both Houston, Texas, and West Windsor, New Jersey. TKO: South Philly’s Joe Pepe wins big on competition program on CBS

<<Continued from page 1 sity, Pepe, who tied, at one point, the fastest player in the NFL – not once but three times – in the 40-yard dash with a speed of 4.28 seconds, studied exercise science with Concordia University while playing for the minor league team. Although due to injuries he was only with the minor league team for about a year, Pepe says he gained valuable lessons – something that would serve as an undertone throughout his life. “It was nice to always be around a team, because then I had that aspect of life, and I got to bring it (to HealthEase) with my members, and I got to bring it into the show, and I got to bring it into pretty much any factor of life,” he said. “It was nice to have that social skill built.” These days, though, Pepe is flying a bit more solo, as “TKO,” a new show hosted by comedian and Philly native Kevin Hart, requires five contestants to maneuver through a series of physically challenging courses, such as leaping from island to island and balancing on a revolving beam – all while dodging flying discs, rubber balls and a few other unidentified flying objects.

Pepe says, before tackling the first hurdle, he formulated a strategy. But, once the bells rang, he blacked out. “That first dodgeball hits the glass, and the entire plan goes out the window,” he said. He knew he had to rely on one thing – his speed. Pepe, who clinched the highest speed of completing the course in three minutes and 32 seconds, vanquishing the second place total by two minutes, only received one “knockout” – or penalty – which added one minute to his total. With a studio audience screaming and Hart romping around the stage, Pepe describes the scene as a blur of chaos but everything became clear when the final results were announced. “Suddenly, every bit of energy you thought you left on the course comes rushing right back into you,” he said. “I just wanted to run circles around the entire world. … It’s a moment that I can’t forget, but at the same time, I can’t really remember.” In yet another twist of events, shortly after he was announced the winner, Swoop, the Philadelphia Eagles mascot, paraded on the stage. Swoop’s surprise

MONTY BRINTON/Photo Courtesy of CBS

Lower Moyamensing resident Joe Pepe appears alongside Swoop and host Kevin Hart during his recent appearance on ‘TKO: Total Knock Out.’ appearance was especially personal to Pepe as, before becoming a reality TV star, he was famed around town for actually giving Swoop his name through an Eagles mascot-naming competition. Even though Hart and Swoop fulfilled his Philly void out in L.A., Pepe says the true token from home was, while out on the course, remembering

his neighbor, and also dear friend, who passed away from cancer. “That was my South Philly with me,” he said. “It’d be nice to continue her legacy if I can go home a winner. … This was my way of kind of thanking her.” Along with starting a savings fund for his nephew and planning a vacation,

Pepe plans to put his prize in savings. But “TKO” is hardly the finish line for him, as he was just approved to compete for two Guiness Book of World Record titles – the most burpees completed in one minute and the fastest mile on a treadmill. Both endeavors will raise money for charity, as the burpee funds will go toward the Special Olympics and the mile money will benefit the “Back on my Feet” organization to support the needs of the homeless. While he’s passionate about such causes, for Pepe, lending a helping hand can simply mean encouraging young athletes who may not fit the “ideal” body type, as he recalls feeling dispirited by others who told him he was too pint-sized for competition. “I kind of like that idea that I can be that voice for others who are in the same role that I used to be in. I take that whole mantle of Superman too seriously sometimes,” he said. “But, I take it in the sense that – if I can take that sense of hope for somebody else, then I’ve done something. I’ve made that ripple effect, and I made the earth a little bit better than when I came in.”

EAGLES INSIDER

NFL inducting Eagles’ heart and soul into Hall of Fame

I

Brian Dawkins set to join historic ranks of pro football’s finest on Saturday

t was late February in 2009, another lousy Super Bowl-less winter ending in Philadelphia, and it became a whole lot worse when word leaked that Eagles safety Brian Dawkins, a beloved figure for 13 seasons here, was signing a three-year contract with the Denver Broncos. The fans in the region, deservedly, were crazy with anger. That the Eagles allowed the heart and soul of the franchise to leave in free agency was inexcusable and unthinkable and irrational. The Eagles, simply put, thought Dawkins, at the age of 35, was too far past his prime to invest in his future. And that angered every fan right down to the bone. Fortunately, time healed this wound. Dawkins played three seasons in Denver and then retired after the 2011 sea-

son. The Eagles immediately inducted Dawkins into the franchise’s Hall of Fame and retired his jersey No. 20. Ultimately, Dawkins returned to the organization to work in the personnel department and the team and the individual kissed and made up and the fans embraced the reconciliation, and everyone has gone back to happy, happy. And now the crowning moment for Dawkins, for the Eagles and for the fans: Dawkins is to be enshrined into the Pro

Dave

Spadaro

Football Hall of Fame on Saturday and he will be supported by thousands of Eagles fans in attendance in Canton, Ohio. A fan base that suffered for 57 years is suddenly living a charmed life: Dawkins was named to the 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class on Feb. 3, and the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots on Feb. 4 to win the Super Bowl. As the region has celebrated since that historic night, Dawkins’ enshrinement on Saturday adds to the party. Never before had a player touched a fan base as Dawkins has with the Eagles’ faithful – his emotional, fearless and intelligent approach to the game resonated with the blue-collar, championship-starved fan base, and his big-play abilities as the get-the-ball player in coordinator Jim Johnson’s Eagles defense changed the way the NFL played its

safeties. Back before Dawkins came along, safeties were simply smaller versions of linebackers. They played closer to the line of scrimmage and were largely judged by their ability to crush opposing running backs as they came through the hole. But then Dawkins entered the league and after him Ed Reed (Baltimore) and Troy Polamalu (Pittsburgh) and suddenly the safety was a more versatile player who had to cover receivers and run sideline to sideline and blitz and, yes, fill the hole and take on 220-pound running backs. And Dawkins was better than any of them. “Truly a game-changing and generational football player,” Eagles Chairman/CEO Jeffrey Lurie says of Dawkins. “He played with incredible

energy and passion.” For his part, Dawkins is reveling in the moment. The past is forgiven. He has his Super Bowl ring and he’s soon to have his Hall of Fame jacket. All is good. “This is a thrill of my lifetime. I loved every minute of playing in Philadelphia. This honor, this is for them and for my coaches and my teammates,” Dawkins said. “I wouldn’t be here without all of that, all of them. I’m truly blessed.” We celebrate Dawkins this weekend and remember everything that he’s meant on and off the field. The true Philadelphia Eagle goes into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and no player deserves it as much, or will enjoy it more, than Brian Dawkins. Sometimes, fairytale endings do happen, and in this case, that’s exactly how it played out.

REUNITED

After twenty long years, Emily A. Guidotti, has been reunited with her beloved husband, Vincent A. Guidotti, Sr.

Emily and Jimmy were childhood sweethearts who were together from the age of 14 until the day Jimmy passed in July, 1998. Emily and Jimmy were soulmates and only had eyes for each other. They dedicated everything they had to their family and gave without hesitation from their hearts and souls until their last days. They were the greatest parents a child could ever hope for and for that we are forever grateful. We honor you Mommy and Daddy and thank you for all you have given us. Our home was always warm and ďŹ lled with what mattered most; your love, your caring, your teachings, how you worked with integrity to raise your children with the best life you possibly could give us and most importantly your unconditional love for all time. Your presence is missed forevermore and the ache in our hearts will never end.

Twenty Seven Years of Grief Evelyn McDaniel-Smith Remembers the Late Honorable Mayor Frank L. Rizzo a.k.a. Francis Lorenzo Rizzo October 23, 1920 – July 16, 1991

Emily peacefully entered into the loving arms of Jesus while being loved and cared for by her family; Her sons: Jay and Vincent; Her Daughter: Maria and her loving Grandchildren: Matthew David and Leah Marie. We would also like to thank our family friend, Larry, for his constant love, devotion and generosity. All services are private due to a special request. A Memorial to Both Emily and Vincent will be announced at a later date.

PERSONALS Prayer Thank You

5 DAY NOVENA TO ST. THERESA

St. Theresa, The Little Flower. Please pick me a rose form the heavenly garden, and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to grant me the favor I implore and tell him I will love him daily more and more. This prayer is to be followed by 5 Hail Mary’s, 5 Our Father’s and 5 Gloria’s. The prayer is to be said by 11 AM daily for 5 days. On the 5th day you will receive a single rose or more in some form, but only if your favor is to be granted. Take note of what you have promised, if God grants the favor you implore. S.T.J.
