here is so much pain in the world that if someone can make a difference for one person, that’s enough of a drop of rain to make a ripple and foster change,” Cassandra King said Monday. The resident of the 2400 block of South Camac Street has crafted a distinguished racing career, but personal glory has not occupied her mind or that of her 20-year friend and fellow accomplished rider Janine Verstraeten on their recent excursions. The two have united with the Bryn Mawrbased Cadence Cycling Foundation and the Mount Airy-headquartered Gearing Up to have their pedals help to prove the See CYCLING page 8

Domenic instead dedicated his involvement in the 42nd Phillies Home Run Derby to his lone sibling, continuing to honor his memory nearly two years after his shooting-related death. “Everything about him inspires me,” the resident of Third and Ritner streets said before leading off the 9- and 10-year-old boys’ division of the Phillies’ longest-

running program. “We especially bonded through basketball and baseball.” Those sports and soccer occupy Domenic at the Southeast Youth Athletic Association, Seventh and Bigler streets, where he has spent six years improving his athletic acumen as a Blue Jay. What are your thoughts on Andre Iguodala being traded prior to helping Team USA win a gold medal?

A-worthy marks

“He did nothing for the gold. He wasn’t even playing much. They would just put him in to give the other players a break. That was the best trade [the Sixers] made in a while. Sonny Tortorice, 13th Street and Moyamensing Avenue

“I don’t really think it was a good move on the Sixers’ part. ... I don’t think it was an equal trade. I don’t think [the Olympics] played any part. Bobby Moresi, 15th and Jackson streets

“Iguodala wasn’t gonna take [the Sixers] farther than they already are. Andrew Bynum from the Lakers, now he’s a step up. [The gold] is good for Iguodala personally, but it ain’t gonna help the Sixers win the championship. Terry Sumpter, 13th and Shunk streets “I think it was a good move. The Sixers now have one of the top centers, and it’s good for Iguodala. He can run the show in Denver. It gave Iguodala two times to be happy. He got traded and he won the gold. Duke Franklin, Broad and Ritner streets Interviews by Lauren Hertzler Photos by Greg Bezanis Comment at www.southphillyreview.com/opinion/word-on-the-street. Respecting police ofďŹ cers To the Editor : Two South Philadelphia principals — Mr. Thomas Koger, above, from left, of Stephen Girard School, 18th Street and Snyder Avenue, and Mr. Christopher Wiler, of F. Amedee Bregy School, 1700 Bigler St.— were honored Aug. 7 at Burlington Coat Factory, 424 W. Oregon Ave., for Outstanding Leadership in the Community. Mr. Harold Reed, unit director from The Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, 25th and Jackson streets, honored both of the recipients with their awards. It touches my heart to see such acts of kindness and thoughtfulness for both of the principals. Keep up the good work Mr. Koger and Mr. Wiler. Both of you are assets to the South Philadelphia school system and the community. Denise Lawson South Philadelphia

To the Editor: I am sick and tired of people always putting our police officers down. True a few do stray. The majority are hard working people. They put their lives in danger every day. They don’t even know us, Yet they are willing to protect us. They may get benefits, but does it cover the cost of their lives? I don’t think so. When you see a police officer, give them a smile instead of a frown. Josephine Zirilli South Philadelphia Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

Identifying the ID issue To the Editor: Tom Cardella’s satirical column (“Stop Philly from voting, July 19) draws the conclusion of many: Voter ID is the latest iteration of voter suppression that helps one party, the Republicans, more than the other. In his unique tongue-in-cheek style Cardella illustrates how this kind of suppression affects minority voters especially. Yet, Tom is the first columnist I’ve read who discusses the proliferation of counterfeit ID cards. These cards are so well made that they are indistinguishable from the real thing. So, if anyone is really dedicated to voter impersonation, it would be a simple matter to produce a counterfeit card. This makes the entire photo requirement moot and silly. The fact remains that voter fraud, if it exists, will not be curtailed by the ID card law. It will just make it nearly impossible for thousands of lawabiding Pennsylvania citizens, mostly

Police are seeking a man who exposed himself to four woman ranging from age 22 to 67. By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor

A

n unknown man traveled from Pennsport to East Passyunk Crossing, exposing himself to four females and assaulting two of them Monday. A 22-year-old woman was strolling northbound on the 1100 block of South Second Street at 8:55 a.m. when the man indecently assaulted her from behind and then hopped inside a small, black vehicle with faded paint and a dent on the right rear side that headed south on Second, according to a Special Victims Unit crime bulletin. Fifteen minutes later as a 27-year-old woman headed east on the 100 block of Ellsworth Street, the man assaulted her as well, according to the bulletin. When she turned around, she saw his genitals exposed through his unzipped pants. The man fled on foot. On the 1800 block of South 10th Street, the man, who was standing next to a parked car, tried to converse with a 67-year-old woman at 9:20 a.m. as he touched his uncovered private parts, according to the bulletin. The man approached a 65-year-old woman five minutes later sitting in front of her residence on the 1800 block of South Ninth Street, according to the bulletin. When he tried to talk to her, she realized he was feeling himself, so she entered her home. The man was described as Latino, in his mid- to late-20s, 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-9; having dark-colored hair; and wearing darkcolored clothing. To report information, call Special Victims at 215-685-3263, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Tracking the case An area woman was killed on the Broad Street Line tracks yesterday morning. SEPTA video surveillance depicted the 30-year-old South Philadelphian, whose name has not been released, entering the Lombard-South station at about 2 a.m., Jerri Williams, SEPTA’s director of media relations, said in an e-mail. The woman then unintentionally walked off of the platform and fell into the track, striking the third rail, which is the power-conductor rail, Williams said. At 5:01 a.m., a northbound train struck the woman at the station. The Medical Examiner’s Office’s con-

clusion on which incident had caused her death was not available at press time.

Take-out orders A Whitman fast food restaurant was robbed Monday. As a 24-year-old female manager opened the front door of Wendy’s, 2130 S. Columbus Blvd., at 6:48 a.m., an unknown man with a shirt wrapped around his head and a gun in his hand pushed in behind her, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He grabbed her hair, pointed the weapon at her head and pulled her into the office, telling her to get cash. He took her purse and cell phone before demanding her not to put in the wrong code in the safe. He swiped $400 and told the employee not to move as he fled westbound from the eatery. He was described as black with a dark complexion, 6 foot, 180 pounds and wearing a white shirt, black pants, white socks, black sneakers, gloves and a gray shirt covering his head. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Overnight invasion Three masked men burglarized a woman’s West Passyunk home Tuesday. The 42-year-old heard footsteps at 5 a.m. while sleeping in the basement of her abode on the 2400 block of Durfor Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. She heard someone try to open the basement door, which caused her to head upstairs. At that point, she saw three men fleeing out of the back door. Two of the masked men quickly escaped while a third pointed a gun at her, so she retreated to the basement to call 911. Stolen items included a Nintendo Wii, six Wii games, a DVD player, a Dell laptop and a gold/silver watch. The gunman was described as white, 6-foot-5, thin and wearing a white T-shirt, light-colored jeans and a black ski mask. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms. SPR Contact Managing Editor Amanda L. ‘I should be relaxed. I’m a dancer. I need to perform in front of a lot of people.’” Paula Johnson, of 19th and Norwood streets, was happy about the children’s activities that included dancing, bicycling, playing basketball and jumping around in moon bounces. “It’s shows that [Unity organizers] care about the younger kids to give them something to do than all that violence,” Johnson, who was sitting out in front of her daughter’s in-laws’ home watching her grandchildren, Freddie, 10, and Maniyah, 5, said. This year, Moore expanded his one-day festival into Peace Week with a rally, teen night, success conference, senior day and basketball game. “I think that trying to do it in one day is a big rush,” he said. “I wanted to touch every age group.” While Friday’s contest was postponed until Sept. 1 due to inclement weather, only a brief 15-minute downpour interrupted the block party. Guests, including Rodney Talives Sr., who had to work during last year’s festivities, found cover nearby. He passed by earlier as volunteers were setting up and decided to swing by with his son, Rodney Talives Jr., 16. “The rain ain’t gonna stop nobody,” he said after noting the good cause. “… I think it’ll have a good impact. rowing up ton Moore, along with his peers, couldn’t afford to attend concerts, so he vowed to bring free entertainment to his community if he had the opportunity. These days, the 26-year-old is smiling about fulfilling that childhood dream by orchestrating his fifth annual Unity in the Community gathering along the 2000 block of Snyder Avenue. Saturday’s festivities included free food and entertainment for the crowd of about 600 attendees. “I always thought that was something the community would look forward to and can appreciate,” the resident of 20th Street and Snyder Avenue said. Dionne Thomas, of 18th Street and Snyder Avenue, has attended every year. “He don’t forget about his neighborhood,” she said. “He gives back once a year [with the block party]. CYCLING continued from page 1 mettle of underserved children and women in transition. Aside from seeing cycling as a means to sate competitive drives, King and Verstraeten, of the 1100 block of Watkins Street, have realized each journey possesses the power to help bikers to combat fear and achieve autonomy. Knowing her athletic vocation’s depth caused King to make a communal leap three years ago through her Tri-State Velo team’s relationship with Cadence. “Through their involvement, these boys and girls learn accountability, which spills over into other areas of their lives,” the Lower Moyamensing inhabitant said of the participants, ages 9 to 18, whom the five-year-old foundation helps to develop life skills through spring and summer training and racing. Former competitor Ryan Oelkers established Cadence after determining youngsters had a dearth of cycling opportunities. Beginning in Philly before branching out to New Jersey and Delaware, he devised the initiative to assist them in likening the discipline one needs to be a consistent cyclist to the tenacity one must call upon to be a productive member of society. “We strive to get kids hooked on cycling and to foster a healthy lifestyle,” Oelkers, whose brainchild includes a four-year relationship with the Mastery Charter School Thomas Campus, 927 Johnston St., said. King, the 2009 Pennsylvania State Criterium and the Pennsylvania State Race championships gold medalist, has become so invested in their future that many Cadence figures join her squad for weekend treks. Receiving treatment as sponsored riders, they engage in as many as five races, some as many as 65 miles long. Oelkers said the youths offer a glimpse of cultural and socioeconomic diversity yet have a defining similarity — their will to achieve. “The most rewarding aspect is seeing them reaching their goals, including the chance to attend college,” he said. Verstraeten, a former Liberty Classic white jersey winner for the best young rider, recalled the thrill of competing as a junior to inspire her to join Cadence in May. The East Passyunk Crossing dweller, having sought out Gearing Up founder Kristin Gavin in December, added another aspect to her cycling resumé by agreeing to help members of the Girard College Cadence unit Mondays. Wanting to make her new affiliation especially fruitful, she courted King to join her for June 3’s Bicycle Magazine Open Gran Fondo along Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Competing as The Liberty Belles, the friends completed the three-lap fundraising gathering to benefit Cadence and Gearing Up, a three-year-old organization

that helps females to overcome the horrors of abuse, addiction and incarceration. “Through our efforts, we raised $5,300 for them, making us the most successful participants,” Verstraeten said. The two held hands as they crossed the finish line in third place, acknowledging their deepened interaction’s possibilities. “It is so easy to become overwhelmed,” Verstraeten said of circumstances that reinforce feelings of helplessness among

their assisted populations. “It is important to find proper assistance, and we’ve enjoyed being a resource for people as they discover themselves.” VERSTRAETEN ALIGNED HERSELF with Gearing Up after experiencing a period of pain. Having escaped a less-than-loving relationship, she sought a volunteer opportunity and combined her yearning to become emotionally stronger with her

he third annual Difference Makers issue will be hitting doorsteps this fall. Just like the last two years, the South Philly Review is seeking nominations from its loyal readers. They can be teachers, volunteers, coaches, doctors or any other profession. All entries will be reviewed by our selection committee, with the best ones being profiled in our very special Oct. 11 Fall Guide. Those who were

cycling prowess through Gavin, a Mount Airy resident who felt women in transition needed an engrossing path to fulfillment. “The challenges they face are complex, so I wanted them to retrieve, or acquire for the first time, a sense of dignity,” Gavin said. An obvious physical boon, bicycling also doubles as a psychological balm, Gavin, who at any given time helps 70 women at Northeast Philly’s Riverside Correctional Facility, Germantown’s New Directions for Women Inc., Mount Airy’s Interim House Inc. and Center City’s CHANCES, where Verstraeten offers support on Fridays, said. Gavin and Verstraeten see their charges through an open enrollment period and two phases through which participants track their miles, earn incentives, enroll in an earn-a-bike program, graduate and return as mentors and volunteers. “We also host a riding event one Saturday a month from April through September,” Gavin said. Verstraeten journeys as many as eight miles with her ladies and derives as much strength from them as she attempts to impart to them. “That they are able to accept that selfconfidence can come through movement and that the more they push themselves the higher the potential rewards make our interactions mutually healthy opportunities,” she said. “The bikes help them to reframe themselves,” Gavin added, noting that the tools engender occasions to establish social connectedness and seek employment. The four bicycle enthusiasts preach responsibility and resolve to their road companions, with emphasis on self-respect and camaraderie guiding interactions. “When we go out, we engage in what we call ‘clearing,’ which involves stating what we are leaving behind and what we are gaining,” Gavin said. “That helps us to see that what we experience individually is often a group dynamic.” “When we establish programs, we look for them to be sustainable, which, aside from money matters, means having kids who want to believe, who want to see cycling as a precursor to much more,” Oelkers added. As for the local cycling disciples, King and Verstraeten feel blessed to notice growth among their pupils. With wellestablished places in their sport’s annals, they decree that figurative victories matter more than ones that scoreboards and stopwatches display. “I think the Cadence kids don’t always realize the value of what they’re doing,” King said. “They will, though,” Verstraeten added. “The kids and the women are true champions.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. DEMARCO continued from page 1 and fields as therapeutic aids, as he and his parents valiantly try to live their lives while contemplating the tragic end to their relative’s existence. “Oct. 20, 2010 was the day of the incident,” Anthony DeMarco Sr. said. “The day had a strange feeling to it anyway, but little did we know how it would end.” The patriarch granted his son, who hours before had received his driver’s license, permission to use the family car so he could celebrate his accomplishment with friends. At 11:29 p.m., the 20-year-old, a promising apprentice who like his father seemed destined for a carpentry career, suffered gunshot wounds to his stomach and back on the 200 block of Jackson Street. Doctors at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital prop nounced him dead just after midnight. “We had just finished watchingg the game,” Anthony DeMarco Sr. said of cat catchtchgue ing Game Four of the National League lChampionship Series between the Phillies and the San Francisco Giants.. “Hearing the news of the shooting, we just became so shocked.” Domenic, on the verge of sleep before the terrible notice came, remained positive in pondering the future for his brother, also a SEYAA product. “I said ‘Don’t worry, Mom and Dad,’” the soon-to-be fifth-grader at rly Our Lady of Hope School, formerly JackkEpiphany of Our Lord School, 1248 Jackson St., said. and “You also told us ‘Nin will be OK’’ and y De‘He’s going to come home,’” Anthony Marco Sr. added as his surviving offspring acknowledged his nickname for his departed loved one. “It was too late though.” His clan gained some comfort Nov. 12, ’10, and May 8, ’11, with the arrests of Kevin Williams and Dawud Abdul-Hakim, respectively, who both have been charged with murder, robbery, conspiracy and related charges, according to court records. The two will have a motions hearing Sept. 24 followed by a scheduled Oct. 1 trial. “Anthony is on my mind all the time,” Domenic, wearing a pin bearing his brother’s image, said. “I feel I can win this for him.” The confident child became obsessed with baseball three years ago, developing an affinity for pitching. His batting skills, however, landed him time at the eight-year-old park. Fending off 15 foes each time, Domenic duplicated his ’10 win at SEYAA’s home run derby, one of 100 local competitions, April 17, and claimed the regional crown in Sharon Hill July 29 to become the only area representative in his age group. “It felt great to win, and I know Anthony would have been proud,” he said of overcom-

Anthony DeMarco Sr., from left, Domenic DeMarco and John Bradley, who, along with brother Paul, has followed in his father Jack Bradley’s derby duties, united after the young man had taken his swings. Domenic dedicated his time at Citizens Bank Park to his deceased brother, Anthony DeMarco Jr., inset, whose alleged killers will go on trial in October. P h o t o b y R o b To r n e y

ing the sting of dropping the ’10 regional. In anticipation of the main event, Domenic worked on his compact swing in the George Sharswood School yard, 2300 S. Second St., and Bellmawr, N.J.’s Sportz Central. “I didn’t try to do anything that different,” Domenic, one of 22,000 children whom the Phillies assist annually, said. “Hitting is so much fun to me.” THOUGH HE ENJOYED opening July’s regional affair, Domenic would have preferred to be the pursuer and not the pursued Sunday. “That’s OK,” his father said of his going first. “You’ll be the pacesetter.” After watching girls smoke softballs and younger boys smack offerings from a pitching machine, Domenic strode to the plate with an introduction from long-time Phillies public address announcer Dan Baker. Like his peers, he stood to receive at least one point for each fair ball from 10 swings, with balls traveling at least 100 feet earning him two points and one flying at least 125 feet counting as a home run

and aan granting him five points. “Anthony was just coming out of his shell,” Anthony DeMarco Sr. said of his ssh absent kinsman. “Domenic reminds me of a him in so many ways. Regardless of the outcome, today is big for him.” Domenic and his sire figured a score in the high 20s or low 30s would place the youth in an enviable position. The rules did not instruct participants to swing at every pitch, but Domenic felt composed enough to activate his stick each time. His first two cuts produced ground balls each worth one point, though his third rip soared far enough to count as a homer. Four more single-point strokes followed, with another home run coming on his eighth try. Three additional points over the final two swings capped his duties and sent him to see if his 19-point total would suffice. His ultimate sixth-place distinction contest could not collar him a trophy, but he earned plaudits from Paul Bradley, whose father, Jack Bradley, a former semi-professional player, developed the derby in 1971. “He’s a great kid,” Paul Bradley said. “We’re fortunate to have had him here.” The derby’s coordinator of events noted 21 participants have gone on to play in the Major Leagues, including former Phillies

hurler Jamie Moyer; Upper Darby’s Mike Scioscia, the two-time American League Manager of the Year from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; and Millville, N.J.’s Mike Trout, the likely American League Rookie of the Year, who patrols the outfield for Scioscia. He would love to think future professionals stepped to the dish Sunday morning, with Domenic also enjoying that possibility. “The experience was wonderful and I enjoyed the chance to dedicate the day to Anthony,” Domenic, who received a keepsake of Roy Halladay, his favorite pitcher; an enlarged card of outfielder John Mayberry Jr.; and a Phillie Phanatic bobblehead, said. “Anthony probably would have said, ‘You gave it a shot. Come back next year,’” Anthony DeMarco Sr. added. “Then he probably would have said, ‘Man, you could have done so much better.’” Domenic, who will join a new age bracket next year, figures to heed that imagined reaction. “I feel good about competing again,” he said. “Anthony would want nothing more.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Broad St., a professional guitarist who records with multiple Christian-faith-based groups as well as solo, fell into theater a couple years ago when people from Hammonton, N.J.’s Eagle Theatre caught him playing at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, N.J. and asked him to audition. “I said, ‘I don’t know much about theater.’ And they said, ‘You can teach a rock guy theater, but you can’t teach a theater guy rock ‘n roll,’” Bortnick who eventually auditioned for and was cast as the character Roger in a production

Lifestyles of “Rent,” said. “They were extremely loving and kind and gentle and patient. They’d say, ‘Stand on stage left’ and I’d go to the right.” But the rocker-turned-actor put on quite a show and the Eagle Theatre team asked him to come in and audition for one of the four leads in “My Way,” which opened last weekend and runs through Aug. 25. “My role is in a two-guy, two-girl tribute to Sinatra. No one is playing Frank. It’s four friends sharing his music and telling stories and quotes and just really giving people the scope that one single voice has affected the music of that era,” Bortnick said. With a few performances in the can, Bortnick said audiences were loving it. “It’s going great. The nice thing about it is the age average of the audience is probably like 70. And it’s really interesting to me that these men and women having difficulty just walking into the theater and getting to their seats were able to sing and clap along and these gentlemen were standing and shaking our hands at the end,” he said. “They lived this music and it brought back memories.” BORN IN NORTHEAST Philly, Bortnick planned to have a career in visual arts, so

he commuted every morning to CAPA to hone his craft. “I would take the bus, the El and the trolley every morning to get to CAPA,” he said. “I was planning to be a visual artist, so drawing, painting, sculpting.” His burgeoning career, however, was derailed by a seemingly innocuous request. “When I was in junior high and I heard about CAPA, I put together a portfolio and auditions and I was loving drawing and painting. Then, at 14, I asked for a guitar. So I got this guitar and it overtook my life like I never expected it to. People couldn’t have a conversation with me — on the phone or in person — without it being in the background.” Bortnick was hooked on music and refined his guitar skills enough to matriculate at University of the Arts where he finished out a degree in jazz music. “I actually was working my entire junior and senior years of college by gigging every night — acoustic or playing with rock bands. I would get done playing at 2:30 a.m. and be in class at 7:30. That’s how I did my last two years,” he said. After graduating in the mid-1990s and building a successful career recording and playing in the area, Bortnick began the rock band Octane in 2000, for which he

sang lead vocals until ’07. “I left that band pursue music ministry,” Bortnick, who leads worship Sundays at his Ambler-based church, said. “We were all friends and still are. They knew where I was going with everything.” The son of two Jewish parents, Bortnick accepted Jesus as his savior later in life and his faith now leads his personal and professional lives. With a home in the Somerton section, Bortnick feels blessed to have his wife, four kids and the ability to make music. “Last year the original five [members of Octane] got together and did a performance at the Electric Factory for St. Patty’s Day and then we did Xfinity Live! [1100 Pattison Ave.] last month,” he said. “When we first got back together and talked I said, ‘The only way I can do this is if you’re OK with me writing openly about my faith.’ “We’ve all grown up and probably a lot of it is that I know myself better. With all of these guys no one is coming there for any reason other than making music.” With the initial plans being laid for shows along the Shore in the near future, Octane has been heading into the studio and also plans to release a single to be put into rotation by a radio station beginning Sept. 1.

But for the next two weeks, Sinatra is still first and foremost on Bortnick’s mind. “It brings me back to my childhood. My father passed away when I was 8 and I remember my mom and dad listening to Sinatra. I remember the movies. I remember guys like Sinatra, Tom Jones and Elvis really inspired me,” Bortnick said. “[Sinatra] had this voice that was so recognizable. It’s not like today where you hear songs and you’re guessing, ‘who is this on the radio?’” Bortnick hopes his and his fellow actors’ performances will help to transport those who remember hearing and seeing Frank Sinatra in popular culture back to that time. And perhaps give young people who aren’t as familiar a taste of what they are missing. “They should come because whether you know Sinatra or not you are going to get two hours of beautifully written songs, timeless songs and get them in a way that’s never been done before,” he said. “The arrangements we’ve done as originals and are done as a cabaret style. “We are celebrating the music and involving the audience.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

F

latulence has become this century’s version of bad breath. Once only snickered at in private, thanks to the genius of capitalism, America’s flatulence problem may become a thing of the past. As with most problems, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Certain foods are prone to cause flatulence. Although with Uncle Nunzi, his particular problem encompasses all food groups. Uncle only has to “cauliflower” before he begins reacting, in a manner of speaking. Treating flatulence after it occurs is sort of like closing the barn door after the horse has left for pastures unknown. Not that I didn’t try. Not knowing how to approach this indelicate problem with Uncle, I simply went ahead and purchased underwear that used a carbon patch to neutralize the odor. I gave the underwear to Uncle Nunzi and casually mentioned I thought he could use a new pair. Uncle asked what the patch was inside the new underwear, and I came clean. The failure of the product was, shall we say, discovered in a most untimely manner — in the middle of a dinner party. Without getting too technical, neutralizing flatulence is actually a two-part proposition. While the carbon patch effectively did its job in neutralizing any offending odor, unfortunately it did nothing to muffle the sound. It was somewhere between the second course and dessert that Uncle and I simultaneously realized his problem had not been fully resolved. Let’s put it this way, the only way Uncle would have been able to hide his failure to fully digest the broccoli rabe would have been if I had selected Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” as dinner music instead of the Bill Evans Trio playing “Moonlight Becomes You.” And Tchaikovsky would have needed to have been accompanied by a very loud display of fireworks. Uncle was mortified. I felt personally responsible for overpromising on the carbon patch underwear. We both went off in search of another solution. I should interject to remind you Uncle is not alone in this problem. Far be it from me to stigmatize my favorite uncle. I should also reassure you Uncle is fully on board with my disclosing his embarrassing problem in this column, if only to encourage others so afflicted to shed their shame and come out of the closet, the water closet in this instance. Flatulence has been an unacknowledged problem throughout our history — the

shame that knows no name. That is not to say a lucky few have not profited from it. In one of an early Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, a talented gentleman used his acute flatulence to “play” “Happy Birthday.” The thing that really made the gentleman unique was that after playing the song, he was able to blow out all 10 candles on a perfectly positioned birthday cake. But it must be said — rarely has flatulence been a boon to its sufferer. Throughout recorded (and unrecorded) history, flatulence has played a key role in shaping the issues of the day. It is not well known that it was really Julius Caesar’s flatulence that caused Brutus and his conspirators to attack him on the Ides of March. Caesar had spoiled many an orgy with his gassiness until finally even his friends decided it was time for a change. When Caesar uttered those famous words, “Et tu Brutus,” he was really pointing out Brutus himself also suffered from the problem and had a helluva nerve singling out Caesar. The Wright Brothers airplane would never have taken flight if Wilbur hadn’t eaten some German sausages and sauerkraut for lunch before getting into the cockpit. Even going back to the Garden of Eden, it was not the fact that Adam ate the apple that got him and Eve tossed out of Paradise, but he had developed problems of a sort trying to digest that first apple, which posed a threat to the lush foliage nearby. This incident prompted the expression, “What on God’s green earth!” The really interesting fact about how the Navy SEALs tracked Osama bin Laden to his hiding place was that the chickpeas in his falafel had acted up, and “now you know the rest of the story.” None of the history surrounding the universal problem of flatulence made Uncle Nunzi feel any better. It was then we discovered Beano one night while watching a TV commercial during the “Sons of Anarchy.” For some reason, FX seems to run more Beano commercials than the rest of the cable stations combined. Beano claims it stops gas before it starts. It is a pill that supposedly contains natural enzymes that act in the digestive tract. At this point, we don’t know whether it will finally solve Uncle’s excessive gas. Our thought is to isolate Uncle in his room for three days and feed him assorted Italian cured meats with a little rabe and some fava beans thrown in for good measure. We are hoping against hope that Beano will work and we will not have to call in the military guy from “The Hurt Locker” to defuse Uncle in order to let him return to civilization. The project is being underwritten by Consumer Reports. If the medicine doesn’t work, maybe Uncle can learn to “play” “Happy Birthday.” SPR Comment a southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

A devilish delight

Bart Layton’s true-crime documentary, “The Imposter,” is a gripping thriller about Frédéric Bourdin’s assuming the identity of a missing French boy.

By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

C

lassic mystery meets stranger-thanfiction documentary in “The Imposter,” an intriguing and occasionally riveting film about serial French impostor Frédéric Bourdin. Throughout his career, Bourdin assumed more than 500 fake identities, but surely, few cases drew more attention than that of 13-year-old Nicholas Barclay, whose disappearance shapes the film’s narrative. Barclay vanished in 1994, and three years later, Bourdin saw a golden opportunity, staging an announcement of Barclay’s discovery, and then traveling from Spain to the U.S. posing as the missing boy. It may not be so outrageous that the public believed Bourdin’s ruse (despite the fact that, even with his hair bleached blonde to match Nicholas’, the imposter looked nothing like the boy), but what’s shocking is that Nicholas’ family welcomed Bourdin home with open arms. Directed by Bart Layton, “The Imposter” is a film that probingly questions people’s motivations, be those people wanted chameleons or desperate small-town family folk. Even if one were open to the convoluted lies surrounding the false Barclay boy’s return (which involve a military operation that brought the Texan overseas, and can account for why his accent, skin tone and eye color are different), it seems astonishing that the kid’s own family would buy it. In addition to reenacting the case with actors and letting Bourdin narrate the tale, Layton interviews the family members, all of whom seem at once pitifully manipulated and accepting of their delusions. Was the grief so strong that it proved blinding for Nicholas’ loved ones? Or is there more to the story here? That “more” is the greatest thing “The Imposter,” has to offer, a layer whose details

trump Bourdin’s treachery on the scale of unnerving, beyond-belief weirdness. While remaining surprisingly objective, Layton fans out clues and personal accounts like marbles on a dance floor, and leaves it to the viewer to navigate their validity without slipping. It’s a fun little cinematic game, and it ably toys with audience allegiance. A twisted genius, Bourdin clearly fills the movie’s villain role, but as “The Imposter” evolves, it offers growing evidence that madness is relative.

Recommended Rental A Separation PG-13 Available Tuesday One of the very best films of 2011, Asghar Farhadi’s Iranian stunner “A Separation” finally makes its way to DVD, greatly rewarding patient film buffs who haven’t yet seen it. A crumbling marriage sets the stage for a rippling series of events among a handful of simple people, all of whom learn the devastating effects a few poor decisions can yield. Brilliantly written and tautly directed, “A Separation” is at once specific to its land of origin and achingly universal. An absolutely unmissable movie. Tips for Buying Kids’ Shoes (Family Features) When it comes to buying shoes for your children, it can be difficult to choose. A child’s foot can grow up to about the age of 18, and the most important development happens in the first seven years.

SAINTSAINT PIO PIO CATHOLIC REGIONAL CATHOLIC REGIONAL SCHOOLSCHO

Here is a quick look at how fast kids’ feet grow: • Under 12 months old, every 2 months. • 12 months to 2.5 years old, every 3 months. • 2.5 to 4 years old, every 4 months. • From 4 to 6 years old, every 6 months.

Shoe Buying Tips

The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) recommends you look for the following: • The sole should be easily flexible and be able to bend with your child’s toes where the ball of the foot will be, rather than in the middle of the shoe. • While your child is standing, you should be able to press about a half inch, roughly a finger’s width, between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. • Make sure to see a professional trained in fitting shoes for infants, toddlers and young children. For example, Stride Rite’s Fit Training Program received the APMA Seal of Acceptance. The seal recognizes products evaluated by a committee of podiatrists that contribute to better foot health. • Have your child’s feet measured every 2 to 3 months until toddler years, then every 3 to 4 months after that. To learn more, and to find a retail store near you, visit www.striderite.com. To learn more about APMA, visit www.apma.org.

ue to rationing during the Depression and World War II, it is believed a cake, now commonly known as “wacky” or “war” cake, was created without eggs, butter and milk and passed down from generation to generation. Aida Kearns’ Wacky Cake is sans the same then-scarce ingredients, making it possible to satisfy vegan friends’ sweet teeth as well. The resident of the 2700 block of South 17th Street offers a suggested glaze, but notes topping it with Cool Whip is just as yummy. SPR

Lemon Hill By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

I

want to visit the “Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse: Visions of Arcadia” exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but it has been so damn hot that the thought of walking up the Parkway and climbing the stairs leaves me gasping for breath. Fortunately, the exhibit runs through Sept. 3. I am always looking for new restaurants near the museum and I found a charming pub. Lemon Hill opened in December in Fairmount. The corner location has been a revolving door of restaurants for at least 20 years, but this establishment hit the mark in a number of ways and may just stay around for a while. An employee greeted Sandy, Edward and me at the door. Lemon Hill retains the original tin ceiling, exposed brick walls and lots of warm wood trim. There is an extensive beer list and I asked Steve, our waiter, to help me make a selection from the tap list. A Brooklyn Blast Pale Ale ($6) has a limited run, but I found it a little hoppy with a refreshing flavor. We also sampled a Terrapin Hopsecutioner ($6.50), IPA from Athens, Ga., which was a little lighter but filled with flavor. We began dinner with chicken livers ($6), beets ($6), broccoli ($6) and pastrami fried chicken wings ($9). The chicken livers were cut into bitesize pieces, coated in cornmeal and quickly cooked. I found the creamy texture inside was a nice foil for the slightly crisp coating outside. I spread some on buttered toast and particularly liked the pickled M a rc o n i / Pa c ke r Pa r k

onions and dipping sauce. A rainbow of cool, chunky beets were bathed in a tangy yogurt dressing and topped with minced herbs. You may think it odd to begin a meal with broccoli, but this appetizer was delicious. It packed a bit of a punch. Each piece was topped with seasoned crumbs, which was a nice contrast with the toothiness of the broccoli. I usually shy away from chicken wings because, more times than not, they are ghastly. Lemon Hill’s version immediately gets three toques. About seven wings were coated in the spices used to cure pastrami and light crumbs and then flash fried. They were meaty and tasty with or without the homemade Russian dressing that came with the order. We should have ordered another round. Although Sandy’s taste buds have improved since she began joining us, she usually plays it safe. She ordered a patty melt ($13), a beloved sandwich from my childhood. Steve advised us that Lemon Hill uses thickly sliced, Texas-type bread. It is basically a grilled cheese sandwich with a burger wedged inside. The beef was uncommonly good and nicely seasoned, but the bread was too thick and not properly grilled. The French fries, however, were hot and crispy. Edward’s pork belly ($12) wins an award. The meat was so tender and slowcooked that it literally melted in my mouth. I’ve had tough versions of this now-classic restaurant dish, but this was by far the best.

The homemade Boston-style baked beans were the perfect side dish – a bit on the spicy side with the smoky flavor of bacon. My shrimp and grits ($14) was the only disappointing dish of the evening. Two medium-sized shrimp, with heads intact, were just OK. I enjoy pulling off the heads and sucking out the good stuff, but the shells were on, and it was difficult for me to eat them. Collard greens can be tricky. The texture was fine, but they were doused in maple syrup that made them inedible. To make matters more difficult, the collards sat on the grits and ruined my dining experience. Steve remedied this immediately and brought me a bowl of steaming hot stone-ground grits from South Carolina, which redeemed my experience. These are nothing like the Quaker Oats grits bought in the supermarket.

Their flavor and texture were divine. Lemon Hill is a fine addition to the Art Museum neighborhood. I intend to return for a bowl of mussels of the day, a catfish club or big salad after savoring the Arcadia exhibit at the Art Museum. SPR Two-and-a-half tips of the toque to Lemon Hill.

This handy-dandy guide on stocking the kitchen, with recipes included, should minimize the stress from the shop-'til-you-drop experience. By Phyllis Stein-Novack Food Columnist

■ Soup au Pistou ■ Ingredients:

Directions: Heat the oil over mediumhigh. Add the onions, carrots and celery and sauté for about eight minutes. Sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Add the broth and water, bring to a boil, add all of the remaining ingredients, lower the heat to simmer, and cook for about 20 minutes or until the shells are done. Add a dollop of Pistou (see recipe below) to each bowl of soup. Serves six.

■ Pistou ■ Ingredients:

8 fat garlic cloves 40 large basil leaves About 1/3 cup of extra-virgin olive oil 2 large ripe tomatoes, cut into chunks Kosher salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste

Directions: Place the garlic and basil in a food processor or blender. Process briefly, then add the tomatoes. Process until the mixture is pureed. Season with the salt and pepper. Place the Pistou in a jar and store in the refrigerator. Makes about 2 cups. Note from Phyllis: This is the Southern French version of minestrone with pesto.

■ Turkey Cutlets ■ Ingredients:

2-1/2 pounds of turkey cutlets, pounded thin, wiped dry with paper towels. Flour for dredging Kosher salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons of Canola oil 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter 1 cup of dry white wine Fresh Italian parsley leaves, chopped

Directions: Place the flour on a plate and season to taste with the salt and pepper. Mix well. Dredge each cutlet into the flour mixture. Shake off the excess flour. Heat the oil and butter over mediumhigh in a 12-inch skillet. Add the cutlets and cook them for about two minutes on each side, depending upon the thickness. Remove the cutlets to a plate. Raise the heat to high, add the wine and using a wooden spoon, scrape up the fond, or brown bits, at the bottom of the skillet. You may want to add another tablespoon of butter for added richness. Return the cutlets to the pan. Heat through. Place the cutlets on a platter and top with the parsley. Serves four. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/food-anddrink/features.

t’s every student’s dream. Finally, after a few years living in cramped quarters in the dorm, surviving on junk food and meals from the cafeteria, the first “place-of-my-own” is a reality. I have fond memories of my first apartment. My roommate and I cheerfully accepted family donations so we could set up the house and cook our meals. This week, I am recommending what kitchen equipment you should purchase while the Aug. 24 issue will have a feature on stocking the pantry. First, follow the sales in department stores and kitchenware shops. I strongly recommended a visit to Fante’s Kitchen Shop, 1009 S. Ninth St. The staff is very knowledgeable about everything and they will not sell you unneeded items. The student’s complete kitchen should contain a top-quality heavyweight 12-inch non-stick skillet and a 12-inch cast-iron skillet. Smaller ones are helpful but not required unless you are lucky like me and found a 3-piece set of Circulon skillets — a $100 value — for just $28.99. You also will need a 2-quart pot with lid, a 3-quart pot with lid and a large stockpot for soups, stews and pasta. Go to the Le Creuset outlet and purchase a large round oven baker which is also my go-to pot for soups and stews. The kitchen should be stocked with a pairing knife, a chef’s knife and a serrated knife along with useful gadgets such as a vegetable peeler, colander, handheld

strainer, can opener and chopping board. Dollar stores are the best places for rubber spatulas, wooden spoons and other utensils such as measuring cups, measuring spoons and a 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup. Purchase at least six cotton dish towels to help reduce the paper towel usage. An electric hand-mixer, toaster oven, pepper mill and an electric knife are must haves. If you or your roommate enjoys baking, staples include two baking sheets, a glass Pyrex pie pan, two 9-inch round cake pans, a muffin tin and an angel-cake tube pan. I like the microwave-safe Corning white, round casserole dishes because you can bake in them and they can be toted to someone’s home for a party. If family members want to chip in for a gift, an immersion blender, a food processor or a KitchenAid would top my list.

the rewards of the last two gatherings, as 70 teams helped to acquire more than $83,000 for its work. The 38-year-old facility will receive Saturday’s proceeds, too. “We have found so many people who are supportive of our mission,” Scullin, who last year helped to incorporate her nonprofit as the Kicking Cancer Foundation, said. “People are living longer because professionals are making so many discoveries.” With 48 teams registered, Scullin revealed her brainchild has easily exceeded $100,000 for its history, and she knows the outpouring of dollars and dedication has come at a critical time. According to the American Cancer Society’s Cancer 2012 report, men possess a slightly less than 50 percent lifetime risk of developing cancer, with women possessing a slightly more than 33 percent chance. As the affliction avoids playing favorites, Philly Kicking Cancer has done so, too, stipulating that each nine-to-12-member squad must have a minimum of three females.

“That idea came from one of our sponsors, Philly Sport and Social Club,” Scullin said of the gender diversity that has helped to make the charity events synonymous with hard-fought professional battles. “Everyone has a competitive streak out there. The glory of winning combines with a desire to increase the quality and quantity of life to produce a wonderful day.” THE ACTION WILL commence at 9:30 a.m., with each unit guaranteed three divisional games. The duels will last either seven innings or 25 minutes, and the most successful clubs will advance to the playoff bracket lasting from 4 to 6 p.m. Scullin and her colleagues are rewarding fundraising prowess by setting aside automatic playoff berths for those participants whose outreach has proven the most lucrative. “That’s a new component of the tournament,” Scullin said, adding that a water balloon contest will likely delight participants and spectators, who might also en-

counter an obstacle course. Scullin and friends, comprising Team Raven Lounge, will hope to claim the championship, but the outcome will not matter nearly as much as the result of their presence. The organizer acknowledged the chance to promote awareness drives participation, and she loves that people who had been content to be on a team have formed their own units. “That fact is really big in backing our belief that we can grow and be able to inspire other cities to replicate our mission,” she said, noting she desires for New York City, where her brother resides, to emulate the City of Brotherly Love. With registration full, she beamed about her organization’s good fortune and feels attendees will find great displays of athleticism and humanitarianism. The latter touched her at a promotional event, where a gentleman, planning to bowl with his children, inquired about her work. “It turns out he had just lost his wife to cancer,” Scullin said. “He said how much he appreciated our efforts and gave us a contribution right there. Our mission is constant because cancer’s effects are, too.” SPR To donate, visit phillykickingcancer.org. Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. committed athlete, Jennifer Scullin knew she had to make her mind rival her muscles. Having learned nearly four years ago that five friends had acquaintances battling cancer, she moved from offering limited sympathy to devising powerful advocacy. The president and founder of Philly Kicking Cancer will unite with 544 enemies of the malady Saturday at Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, Broad Street and Pattison Avenue, for the fourth annual Kickball Tournament to raise cancer research funds. “It just irritated me to know people were suffering,” the Art Museum-area resident said Monday. “I had to go from saying ‘I’m sorry to hear that’ to working to stop the disease’s overall advances.” Kickball, basketball and soccer form her sporting triumvirate, but the first seemed an amazing way to gather peers for a bit of levity while striving to counter devastation. With numerous fields and access to public transportation, FDR Park won the hosting honors for their August 2009 debut, which featured 18 teams and secured $10,000 for Philadelphia’s chapter of the American Cancer Society. The Northeast Philadelphiabased Fox Chase Cancer Center has reaped

Kickball enthusiasts will unite at a Packer Park venue to secure funds for cancer research.

novena to the holy spirit

Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads, so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life You are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank You for all things as You confirm once again that I never want to be separated from You even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with You in eternal glory. Thank You for your mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days and after three days the favor will be granted. The prayer must be published immediately.
