n the not-so-distant past, many would walk or drive by the vacant lot at 2025 Federal St., without having a second thought about the house that once stood there. Local artist Maria Möller, however, wasn’t one of those people. The resident of 12th and Tasker streets decided last winter that this brick-and-cement-free space was filled with potential and applied for a $5,000 grant through the Fund for Art and Civic Engagement, a new initiative of the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority’s Percent for Art Program. “It felt like a really pertinent location for the piece,” the Glenside native said. “It was located between new development and houses that have been there for a Maria Möller stands long time.” next to a piece from “The House Teaming up with Diversified Community That Was Here” exhibit that includes Services, 1529 S. 22nd St., the project’s multiple miniature rowhomes that community partner, “The House That can be seen up close during Was Here” was designed with historical Saturday’s open house. information on the former site along with Staff Photo by too-small-to-live-in sculptures of miniature K at h r y n P o o l e

What are your thoughts on the Phillies’ firing of Manager Charlie Manuel?

“I felt bad because he has been the best manager we have had, but it was time for them to make a move. Change is needed. The team is not responding to Charlie anymore. John MacDonald, Hicks and Jackson streets

State of shame To the Editor: Thanks to Gerald Wright and Helen Gym of Parents United for Public Education for their heartfelt letter regarding the crisis in our public schools (“An educational message, Aug. 15) I had the privilege of witnessing Helen’s speech before the unelected School Reform Commission at an emergency meeting Aug. 15. She was one of about a dozen speakers, including a student, parents, nurses and teachers, most of whom pleaded with the SRC to abandon its determination to suspend the section of the School Code that governs seniority, not to be confused with tenure. The SRC derives its power from provisions of Act 46 that allowed the State to take control of Philadelphia’s schools since 2001 and to use times of distress to make changes to the Pennsylvania

School Code. As Wright and Gym correctly describe, the governor and his minions first created the fiscal crisis that triggered the emergency SRC meeting, even though the money was there all along. In the meantime, an important regulation that preserved order in how staff is allocated was suspended. The effect will be that the SRC can rehire the least experienced and lowest paid employees to fill a minimum number of positions to open schools and help balance its budget. Holding education hostage like this is purposely designed to destroy unity and foster the commercialization of our schools. Shame, shame, shame on them. Gloria C. “I looked at the [Facebook] page and was turned off by the many mentions of the “good ole day under Rizzo (“Street smarts, Aug. 15). They may have been good days for some people, but not for anyone who wasn’t a white person of privilege. I think this group needs to be wary of racial tensions [it] may create. Anonymous via southphillyreview.com

“A few people’s notions about Rizzo should not make you think that all intend to create any kind of racial divide (“Street smarts, Aug. 15). This woman started the group to make everyone aware of what’s going on in the neighborhood. Everyone will have their own beliefs and opinions, but I want to know that my child is safe when they go out in our neighborhood. It’s only going to get worse if something is not done now and I give her credit for all that she is doing to help people become more involved instead of just sitting

“I think that Charlie had his time. He was an excellent manager, but it was time for him to go. Caiseen Martin, 29th and Reed streets

behind closed doors, saying ‘Oh, that’s a shame!’ Anonymous via southphillyreview.com

“I think what she is doing is great (“Street smarts, Aug. 15)! Many people ‘talk’ about incidents but rarely do anything about them. Lots of people would rather say they didn’t see it happen. Why? Because of fear of retaliation. We need to take our streets back and do it now. It’s long overdue. Let’s stop criticizing and bond together to help one another. If you see a crime, please call it in. Give a description of what the offender(s) were wearing. If this happened to you, I think you would want others to help. I know I would. I applaud you, Carol Lanni, I [applaud] your hard work and hope it pays off by letting others get involved. [Way to go]! Carole Zimmer via southphillyreview.com

“What is a shame is that something like this has to happen to make people aware that it’s not safe anymore (“Street smarts, Aug. 15). And this is not a pinpoint about one specific race. It’s about all children in South Philly — no matter the race. Kudos to you, Carol for raising awareness of something that was long overdue. We need to take back our streets and make it safe for our children. Elizabeth via southphillyreview.com

“I have a mixed reaction. I think it was time, but they should have given him the rest of the year. Joe Denisco, 12th and Morris streets

WET PAINT: Philadelphia Flyers fans — 195 to be exact — set aside part of Monday for the very exciting, glued-to-their-seats activity of watching paint dry at the Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. “South Philly is still a great place, regardless of what anyone thinks (“Street smarts, Aug. 15). I still believe this after traveling all over the country multiple times. Do you really think everything is copacetic in the suburbs? Think again. There is crime everywhere, and has been since the beginning of civilization. My grandmother was mugged in South Philly about 30 years ago in broad daylight. Several [people] immediately rushed to her aid; however, this incident was contained to our neighborhood and not broadcast over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. — because those tools were not available. Increasing awareness does not necessarily mean there is increasing crime, but awareness continued on page 8

Trio struck by bullets A triple shooting in Grays Ferry left one dead Monday night. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor

O

ne teen was killed in Grays Ferry while two of his friends were wounded. Nasir Slaughter, 17, of the 1800 block of South Ringgold Street, was with a 17- and 18-year-old male friend on the 1700 block of South Taylor Street when gunfire erupted at 10:08 p.m. Monday, police said. Slaughter was shot in the head and transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead at 11:33 p.m., according to police. His 17-year-old friend was wounded in the back while the other man was hit with a bullet in his calf. They were transported in stable condition to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and HUP, respectively. The motive remains unclear, and no arrests were made by press time. To report information, call Homicide Division at 215-686-3334, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Escape route A man escaped harm by fleeing and dropping a few belongings to prevent thieves from pursuing him. The 20-year-old was walking on the 2500 block of Washington Avenue underneath the rail bridge when two men approached him at 1 a.m. Sunday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. One of the thieves said, “You know what it is. Give up your cell phone,” keeping his hand under his shirt, which made it unclear whether he had a gun or not. Instead of giving in to the offenders, the man crossed the street and started to run, but the other man chased him, Tolliver said. While sprinting he dropped his $200 Beats by Dre headphones and his backpack that contained work clothes and a hoodie. The offenders stopped pursuing him and gathered the items he left behind. The first perpetrator was described as Latino with a light complexion, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, thin and wearing a navy blue hoodie with a graphic design on it while the other offender was described as black with a dark complexion, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot10, thin and wearing a black hoodie. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Clean sweep A man is wanted for burglarizing a Pennsport dentist for about two hours

early Sunday. The suspect entered Dentex Dental Group, 1701 E. Moyamensing Ave., via a side window at about 3 a.m. Aug. 18, according to police. H ow eve r, Surveillance video the business surveillance video taped him roaming from room to room and stealing checks, computers, a credit card reader and mail for about two hours before fleeing in an unknown direction. The burglar was described as black with a light complexion or Latino; age 20 to 30; heavy; having a goatee and a tattoo on the back of his neck; and wearing a longsleeve shirt. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Undercover mugging A trio covered their victim’s head with a sweatshirt before beating and robbing him last week in Whitman. The 51-year-old walking on the 500 block of Ritner Street at 3 a.m. Aug. 14 when three men pounced on him from behind, throwing a blue hoody over his head and punching him until he fell to the ground, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. At that time, they kicked him multiple times on his right side before taking his wallet, which contained $50, ID and medication. The group fled eastbound on Ritner Street, Tolliver said. Two of the offenders were described as white; in their late 30s; 6 foot; 225 pounds; having bald heads; and wearing blue jeans and white sneakers while the other man was described as white; in his early 20s; 5-foot7; 150 pounds; having brown hair; and wearing blue jeans and white sneakers. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Hunting for clues As authorities continue to work to identify a homicide suspect, the victim’s family has added a $5,000 reward to the City’s $20,000 posting. The Citizens Crime Commission is administering the smaller sum that contributes to the $25,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible

W

ith the School District of Philadelphia in the midst of a budget crisis, why not help out with the click of a mouse? Target plans to distribute $5 million to K-12 schools nationwide with its Give With Target promotion. Through Sept. 21 (or once the $5 million limit is reached), individuals may vote for their school of choice on the website, givewith.target.com. Once a given school reaches $25, it will receive $25 plus a $1 for each additional vote. Each school may receive up to $10,000, but voters are limited to one selection per week. Every South Philly school is listed on the website, but many have not reached the 25vote minimum to receive funds.

Safety first

T

he City and the School District of Philadelphia have devised WalkSafePHL plan, a way to improve safety concerns amid school closings that force youngsters to travel outside of their neighborhoods. Led by Town Watch Integrated Services and in conjunction with various City departments, the program will provide training to volunteers who will monitor the safe corridors during designated hours and be clearly identified via a vest and photo ID, so children can spot them. “Students cannot effectively learn if they do not feel safe during the school day, which includes their commute,” Mayor Michael Nutter said in a statement. “The WalkSafePHL initiative combines the efforts of many different organizations working toward the same goal: Safety for students as they walk, bike or ride public transportation.” For more information, call 215-686-1459 or visit walksafephl.org. ART INSTALLATION continued from page 1 row houses that have made this previously vacant space a popular topic of summer conversation. The sides of the picturesque pieces are covered in close-to-a-century worth of stories about this once ordinary house collected from census records and memories. Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents will be able to add their own parting message at the third and final open house. Using markers, paint and paste, guests will be able to add another layer with their memories of Point Breeze or the future hopes for the neighborhood. Students also played an active role by conducting interviews and installing artwork in the lot during the WorkReady summer internship program. “They were great, and an integral part of the process,” Möller said. Clarion University senior Aleya Miller, who is working for Diversified this summer, has spent Fridays at the site with a group of teenagers installing art work. “I though it was great because it was community based from where they are from,” the resident of the 2500 block of South Hancock Street said. “A lot of kids their age don’t take pride in their community to try and make it better.” THE HISTORY OF “The House That Was Here” dates back to 1879, according to the project website, when tailor James Roney resided there. Numerous others moved in after him, but on June 24, 1885, Fire Co. 24 was called to the site of the three-story home to put out a fire that was believed to be caused by a child playing with matches. The location remained a residential location until 1942 when it was zoned for mixed-use. The City of Philadelphia Department of Records has a ’56 photo that included a garage. The property time line ends in ‘62, but memories collected from the research include a fire at some point during that decade in which a fire bomb caused four properties, including the one at 2025 Federal St., to burn to the ground. “Vacant lots are everywhere,” Möller, who also was involved in 2011 City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program’s Journeys South that included East Passyunk Avenue and the Italian Market as host locations. “But I can’t think of a better place where a house once stood as truly being vacant. Memories are there, the stories of people who once lived there are there. The story of how the lot became vacant is there, as is the story of what happens to it afterwards.” Being based in Philadelphia is a plus as it’s the first city in the United States to adopt programs for acquiring and com-

missioning works of contemporary public art for new development in urban renewal areas. The Percent for Art program, which was pioneered in 1959, requires that developers, who build on the land acquired from and assembled by the Redevelopment Authority, budget at least once percent of the total building construction costs toward the commissioning of original, site-specific works of art. Möller’s art background includes both theater, as she earned a Master of Fine Arts in acting from Temple University, and photography, as she has always enjoyed taking pictures. “A couple of years ago, I turned my focus

to visual work,” she said. “It just started to excite me a lot more.” Her work has certainly caught the attention of longtime resident Alice Shockley, of the 1500 block of Wharton Street, who attended Saturday’s open house and left with a lasting impression of all of the research that was put into the project. “I found it fascinating. It was an interesting concept,” she said. For others like Miller, the project will serve as an inspiration for her future career path of being a basketball coach. The sports management major said she found the project to be extremely beneficial. “It gave me insight of what it’s like to be

in charge and teach kids,” she said. This weekend might bring the openhouse sessions to a close, but Möller said the plan is to keep the once-vacant lot filled at least through Sept. 3. “The houses themselves will [eventually] go to a community garden. They are not meant to hold up for a long period of time,” she said of the space that will eventually be put back up on the market. SPR

A Lower Moyamensing actor is fulfilling a dream by playing a character contrary to his nature.

ond of figuring out how to execute any role, James Ijames often finds himself realizing how much he and his characters differ. The 32-year-old performer is reveling in his latest challenge, as he is playing Algernon Moncrieff, a conniving comfort craver in the Mauckingbird Theatre Co.’s treatment of Oscar Wilde’s 1895 play “The Importance of Being Earnest.” In pulling off the humorous assignment, he also is continuing to question what inspires human behavior, a task he uses writing to answer, too. “I’m modest and even-keeled, yet he is another large, buoyant, vertical energy character for me,” the resident of the 900 block of Winton Street said last week of the personality, who covets love to complement his wealth and even uses guile to obtain it. “He’s someone, though, I’ve always wanted to play, so I’ve adapted to take on his flamboyant, ostentatious disposition.” The Lower Moyamensing dweller learned of the part through Mauckingbird’s artistic director Peter Reynolds and is engaging in his endeavor through Sunday at the Center City-situated Off-Broad Street Theatre. Accustomed to accepting opportunities no matter their

LIFESTYLES difficulty, he knew his turn would offer its share of tests. “Oscar Wilde is terrifying,” he said of the revered Irish writer. “I had to do dialect work to help to synthesize and present the material, and that’s proven successful so far because audiences have been receptive to our efforts.” The three-act creation features an abundance of wit, a trademark component of Wilde’s works. The full title dubs it “A Trivial Comedy for Serious People” and makes apparent its author had not intended to impart the text with much moral depth, but Ijames has noted its lines reveal a class analysis perhaps more relevant to today’s theatergoers. “We don’t have an aristocratic order in America, but we can see the characters as leading us to address how we often judge based on what people have or lack,” the thespian said. “Algernon makes many mistakes, but they’re forgiven because he’s from the right kind of people. He’s a rich person who talks with other rich people about being wealthy. I’m definitely not well-off, but I get what Wilde is going for in having us ponder perceptions of societal makeup.” Ijames has used that awareness to laud Mauckingbird’s handling of gay scribes and their output, the acceptance of which

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

has drastically changed since the late 19th century, when Wilde served a prison sentence for being a homosexual. Also a gay man seeking theatrical distinction, the local entertainer appreciates the dwindling of overtly critical reactions and the enhancing of creative possibilities. “We live less fluid lives now because people put themselves in boxes,” Ijames said. “I feel I’ve gained a greater sense of my abilities, regardless of my sexuality or anything else, by accepting rather than rejecting what seems complex.” THE INTROSPECTIVE INDIVIDUAL initiated his probes as a North Carolina youth who acted in church plays. Originally feeling music would bear his career, he shifted his focus and catered to playwrighting and acting urges at Atlanta’s Morehouse College, where he acquired a bachelor’s degree in drama. “I left there with a wonderful toolbox and set out to use as much of my preparation in challenging roles,” Ijames said of furthering his skills through Temple University’s Master of Fine Arts in acting program. True to his desire to honor canonical works and promote contemporary pieces, he has proven a consummate hire for such entities as the Arden and Philadelphia the-

atre companies and The Wilma Theater. He has garnered two Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play Barrymore awards for “Superior Donuts” and “Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches” and received the 2011 F. Otto Haas Award For Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist. “You learn to act by doing it, and I’ve loved my chances to honor writers for their toils,” the accomplished actor said. “I’ve also had many moments where I’ve connected with the city’s outstanding performers, many who call South Philly home, so that’s been another benefit of gracing stages here.” Ijames also won acclaim for writing and appearing in Mauckingbird’s ’10 presentation of “The Threshing Floor,” his tribute to fellow African-American wordsmith James Baldwin, one of many influences on his compositions. “I deliberate on what is enjoyable to say, which then has a role in my acting because of how I try to interpret what’s come before me,” he said. “When it’s out there, I want my writing to be for everyone.” Through the recently completed “The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington” through the Chestnut Hill-based PlayPenn New Play Development Festival and ongoing proj-

ects, Ijames is looking to find audiences thirsty for his creative juices. He also has fostered that by penning content for the National Constitution Center, for whom he also serves as a Freedom Rising presenter. “I’ve loved my identity as a dual artist because it’s about evolution,” the wherewithal-rich figure said. “With interpretations of pieces, I want to continue to encourage audiences to see plays as important reminders of our need to imagine. With my work, I’d have to say that, too.” In addition to playing Algernon, Ijames has spent this year performing in the Kimmel Center’s “Wide Awake: The Civil War Cabaret” and the Arden’s “Endgame.” He will direct “The Brothers Size” for the Simpatico Theatre Project, 850 S. Second St., in October at the Walnut Street Theatre and will team with “Endgame” co-star and Barrymore Award winner Scott Greer, of the 800 block of Federal Street, for the Arden’s spring staging of “Three Sisters.” “I’m very gung-ho about the projects,” Ijames said. “I’ve met and wrangled with Algernon and can’t wait for more.” SPR For tickets, visit mauckingbird.org. Bermuda hey rode from the airport to the ho-

T

tel in Hamilton in a van on a winding road with barely enough room to separate oncoming traffic. The windows were open, letting in the warm, humid air redolent of oleander and jasmine. There are places in your life that you visit once, and once is more than enough, and then again there may be a place that draws you back again and again. The couple had spent the first week of their marriage more than 49 years ago in Bermuda and thereafter seemed to reach some kind of milestone each time they returned. The last time — almost 10 years ago — had not been good. He had been restless, in a frame of mind that marks even the happiest of unions with the sourness of fatigue and discontent. This time, he vowed would be different; he would make it up to her, bask in the sunset of the best decision he had ever made in his life — the day he married her. Anthony Newley once sang “Stop the World, I Want to Get Off.” Bermuda is that chance to halt the carousel of life, even if for only six days. They tossed away all schedules, not an easy thing for him who swears by an organized regimen. Together they glided through the humid heat of afternoons spent by the pool at the Hamilton Princess, along Front Street or on a water shuttle to another part of the tiny island. Soft summer nights floated by watching the distant flashing lights from Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, as cicadas serenaded them with their own version of the Hallelujah Chorus. No cell phones. No clocks or watches, at least to which they paid any attention. One night in the bar and lounge of the big hotel, a duo performed — two men whose harmonies ranged from Marvin Gaye to Bob Marley and the Wailers. They drew a sizeable following of native Bermudians. His wife, whose adept ease at making friends had always astonished him, plied her magic with the Bermudian women and soon was dancing and clapping her hands with them on the crowded dance floor. The normally sedate lounge exploded as the audience cheered the women. Suddenly a group of young 20-something New York women, part of a bachelorette party, ran with a tumultuous uproar onto the crowded dance floor. The young women were obviously used to commanding attention and had an almost arrogant conceit in their selfconfidence as they assumed the spotlight. The dancing finally ended with the soon-to-

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

be bride brandishing a balloon in the shape of male genitalia. It took quite a while for the shock to fade away and normal conversation to resume. Afterward, the Bermudian women not only hugged his wife, but included him in their embrace. Score one for peace, love and harmony. However, all is not serene in Bermuda. Even a remote semi-tropical paradise has to deal with the reality of the world. Seated at a nearby table was a member of the Bermuda tourist board and a former member of its parliament. They struck up a conversation with him. He admitted that Bermuda was having difficulty competing for tourist dollars with other Caribbean islands. Tourism is Bermuda’s biggest source of revenue other than being the world center for international insurance corporations which are lured by less regulations and business taxes. Once boasting one of the highest GDP per capita in the world, Bermuda, too, has been hurt by the world-wide recession, which has included a dip in its housing market. Although Bermuda has a natural advantage of being a relatively short flight away from the northeastern United States, and still has pristine coral beaches and deep blue ocean waters, it is significantly more expensive than many of the other Caribbean islands. Younger couples are lured to other islands by all-inclusive packages that include drinks and food and by gambling and a wilder nightlife (what had just occurred on the hotel dance floor was the exception, not the rule). Bermuda seems reluctant to dumb down its food to offer all-inclusive packages, and so far has not succumbed to building casinos. The member of the tourism board believes that Bermuda also has forsaken its own culture. The famous steel bands that were popular in the 1950s no longer greet visitors at the airport, and seldom perform at the big hotels anymore. Bermuda’s famous balladeer, Hubert Smith, is gone from the scene and no one has replaced his unique Bermudian style. Young Bermudian performers are prone to sing American pop songs and Marley’s reggae, which is associated with Jamaica’s indigenous culture, not Bermuda’s. The money flowing from the big cruise ships that dock at the port in Bermuda cannot sustain its economy. The cruise lines run their own tours of the island, and the relatively short time they spend in port does not allow tourists much time to spend money in the island’s shops. Bermuda is battling against the tide. If you are lucky, you may experience a moment when it is almost possible to believe in a gracious and elegant world, where love doesn’t fade with age but grows stronger, where it is possible to reach out and touch the stars shining above the lighthouse, a place where Daisy Buchanan could have decided to run off with Gatsby. Only in Bermuda. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/cardella.

Clary (Lily Collins) learns she is a shadowhunter — a human with angelic qualities who can spot demons — in the first installment of “The Mortal Instruments.”

Opening act ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

I

t’s clear from the start that “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” doesn’t take itself too seriously, as the movie is stocked with surprisingly funny comic relief, but is it possible that this also is the first youngadult-fantasy adaptation that knows, in its gut, that it’s utterly ridiculous? Forced to cram an impossible abundance of plot into a 130-minute running time, “City of Bones” basically buckles under the weight of its too-muchness, but eventually, it seems to embrace and fly free with its mad swirl of elements, becoming a knowing bit of good trash instead of just another “Twilight”/“Hunger Games” also-ran. Based on the first book of Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” series (and thus, intended as the start of a bankable film franchise), “City of Bones” imagines New York as a place with a subculture far weirder than hipsters — a catch-all world of vampires, werewolves, angels and demons that only a special few can see. One of those few is Clary (Lily Collins), a Brooklyn teen who, like her mom (Lena Headey) and the blonde, tattooed Adonis-type, Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower), is a “shadowhunter,” a half-angel protector of humans and nifty stuff like “The Mortal Cup.” That brief synopsis doesn’t even begin to cover the movie’s wild scope, but no matter. What’s more noteworthy is how “City of Bones” doesn’t pretend to be much more than a swoon-worthy parade of gorgeous faces, from Collins and Bower to Jemima West and Kevin Zegers, who play additional pore-free shadowhunters to ogle. Whereas “Twilight” was deadly serious with its handsome romances, this film pokes fun at them and flaunts its sci-fi li-

bido, even touching on homosexuality and possible incest amid its love quadrangle. The triumph of all this tacky self-awareness is that it adds some kooky glee to the process of sitting through another implausible, computer-graphics creature-fest. “City of Bones” surely wants to be taken seriously on some level, but as it shuffles its cast of models through overcooked scenarios with its tongue in its cheek, it comes within inches of being a youngadult spoof.

Though Baz Luhrmann lets his taste for kaleidoscopic excess get the better of him, the Aussie director does do a few things right with his frantic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic. He nails the hollow pageantry of the titular antihero’s legendary bashes, and he casts the film impeccably, drawing unmissable performances from Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, Carey Mulligan, and, as the big man himself, a rightfully tragic Leonardo DiCaprio. Roberta’s Pineapple Cheesecake

Celebration for a cause

S

W

wapping ingredients and changing the way to prepare a recipe is crucial in order to make a dish your own. Roberta Kubiak does just that with her Pineapple Cheesecake. Instead of incorporating the traditional cherries or strawberries, the resident of the 2100 block of South Hancock Street uses the tropical favorite. And she doesn’t just pour the pineapples on top of her concoction, she whips them right into the creamy batter. This decadent delight is sure to please guests or just be a guilty pleasure to enjoy throughout the week. SPR

INGREDIENTS:

ill BYOB, 1911 E. Passyunk Ave., will celebrate its first anniversary Sunday. Chef Chris Kearse will collaborate with chef David Ansill of Northern Liberties’ Bar Ferdinand, to create a five-course meal for a 5 and 8:30 p.m. seating. Dinner is $100 per person. All proceeds will benefit the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction. To purchase tickets, e-mail info@willbyob.com. SPR

DIRECTIONS:

1-1/2 cups of flour 1 stick of margarine 6 eggs 2 ounces of cream cheese, softened 1 cup of sugar 3 cups of milk 1 large can of pineapples, drained

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix 1 cup of the flour, margarine and an egg together and coat the sides of a 13-by-9inch cake pan. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining ingredients and pour in the pan. Bake for one hour.

REVISITED

Bistrot La Minette ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

early five years ago, Cousin Carl and I dined at Bistrot La Minette, chef Peter Woolsey’s charming Queen Village restaurant. It was time for a re-visit. Edward dropped me off. A gentlemangreeted me and who asked “Do you have a reservation?” Since I did not, he laughed “would you like to make one?” I was the only patron in the room at the time. I was immediately transported to Paris with the sunny yellow walls enhanced by mirrors and art work. Lipstick red banquettes run along a wall with round hanging globe lights, reminiscent of Paris, from the high ceilings. Chanson after chanson, which was playing on the sound system, set the mood. Our server mixed a Bluecoat martini ($12) for Edward and placed it in the refrigerator for cool keeping until his arrival. I asked him to invent a drink for me as I enjoyed a libation made with Saint Germain a number of years ago. He invented a new drink ($12): A French gin which was pale blue in color, mixed with Saint Germain, lemon juice and topped with a twist. It was uncommonly delicious. Our server brought us warm bread and a ramekin of softened, slightly salted butter. We began dinner with terrine de foie gras ($18) and sardines grillées ($13). I remember my first taste of duck liver years ago in Paris, and Woolsey prepared it perfectly. He set the seasoned duck pate on a slightly sweet brioche and served it with a fresh blueberry compote and grated Coffee/Café/Sweets Caffe Chicco: 2532 S. Broad St., 215-334-3100, $

cool endive. The sweet-and-savory contrast was a lovely marriage. Grilled fresh sardines need just a bit of salt, pepper and olive oil. Four boneless beauties were set upon thick strips of roasted peppers and bathed in a light lemon vinaigrette. If you have never tried fresh sardines, this is the place to do it. The wine list at Bistrot La Minette is carefully planned with a number of moderately-priced vintages by the glass and bottle. After a sampling two, we decided on a bottle of Mas des Capitelles ($36), a heady rich red that drank beautifully with our entrées and desserts. Edward chose confit de canard parfumé au anis ($25) while I finally decided on steak au poivre ($30) simply because I have not enjoyed this French classic in a number of years. Woolsey allows a duck leg to “cook” in its own fat for a few days before he roasted it to perfection. It was meaty and juicy inside and crisp on the outside. Crisp duck skin can be nirvana. The licoricescented-and-flavored sauce enhanced the dish. A scattering of English peas and a bit of pommes puree, otherwise known as mashed potatoes, came with the duck. The potatoes were about the best you can get. They were creamy and loaded with butter. I usually prepared steak au poivre with a boneless rib steak. Woolsey used a square piece of New York strip, which is relatively lean. It arrived medium-rare, coated in crushed peppercorns and napped in a light Cognac cream sauce. You might think the use of peppercorns here might overpower Restaurant Review:

the sauce, but it did not. The ratio was just fine. My dinner came with duchess potatoes, which could have been hotter and several nicely seasoned pencil-thin asparagus. Gâteau Opéra ($8) is one of my favorite deserts. It is fashioned with layers of almond sponge cake, coffee buttercream and coated in chocolate ganache. I found the cake a wee bit on the dry side, but the oval portion of Chantilly cream added a nice touch. Since peaches are in season, we also sampled the tarte aux pêches ($8). A light, flaky pastry round was filled with ripe, sweet peaches, topped with toasted almonds and drizzled with a slightly sweet syrup laced with thyme. I enjoy sweets made with herbs and this one hit the spot. A scoop of apricot sorbet was included on the plate. = Very Good

The service was impeccable. The staff watched the tables and helped each other, especially when it became busy. Potito’s Pecan Diamonds

part of his seven-day-a-week routine since its 1985 opening. Luckily, he is not working alone as fellow baker and grandson, Matty Benigno, who shares ownership with his wife, Cristina Potito, assists with the baking. “If he doesn’t come in by 5:05 [a.m.], I have three bakers calling me,” Benigno, of the 2700 block of South Colorado Street, said. Antonio Potito’s son, Carmen, and his wife, Maria, started the Italian-American pastry shop, but he lost his battle against leukemia in 2005. The Potito legacy remains intact as Cristina Potito and Benigno took over ownership in ’09. Many of Carmen’s recipes remain part of Potito’s success story, which now has Center City and North Wildwood, N.J. locations. “We wanted to bring our awardwinning products to different areas,” Benigno, who majored in hospitality management at Widener University, said. “It’s slower

INGREDIENTS: 1 sheet pan of cookie dough 2-1/2 pounds of butter 2 pounds of brown sugar 1/2 pound of granulated sugar 3 cups of honey 1 cup of heavy cream 4 pounds of pecan halves

Staff Photos by Kathryn Poole

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 380 degrees. Line the bottom of a baking sheet with the cookie dough, making sure it is lipped around the edges. Bake for about 12 minutes. When the dough gets some color, remove it from the oven and set aside. Keep the oven on. In a saucepan, melt the butter. Then add both sugars and whisk

until the sugars are completely dissolved. Stir in the honey. Add the heavy cream, and once it starts to boil, add the pecans. Pour the mixture onto the cookie dough and bake for about 20 minutes. When the pecan mixture starts to boil, remove it from the oven. Slice the cookies to desired size. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/ food-and-drink/features.

Even son Gioacchino, 4, is helping out in the bakery, while younger brother Matty, 2, remains a baker in waiting. I know how much you love me, as much as I love you; And each time that you think of me, please know I miss you, too. But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand, that an Angel came and called my name, and took me by the hand.

Dearest Saige You have always welcomed everyone with a smile brighter than the stars that sparkle high above, filling our hearts with joy and lots of love. You are still and always will be the Sunshine in our lives. Until we meet again in Heaven, you are sadly missed our Precious Little Angel, Saige. Loving you always, Nanny Sirolli, Mom (Mim), Dad, Brother Blake, Aunt Michele, adoring family and friends.

Facing renowned competition from across the country, the 11 burgeoning baseball players registered a 4-4 record to place ninth in the 32-team field. “They looked forward to the opportunity all season long, so for them to be able to combine the bonding experience with wins against very good opponents made the trip a huge success,” coach Joe Messina said last week at the Delaware Valley Youth Athletic Association, 2840 S. 18th St., the Marconi site at which they have played together since their days as ambitious 8-year-olds. “The time really sets us up for the next step on their journey.” A resident of the 2700 block of South Marvine Street and a coach at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., the overseer drew inspiration for the excursion from two other Senators squads that had visited the city famous for containing the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Pitching his plan to his charges’ families in September, he received tremendous support from his parenting peers, who joined him in orchestrating fundraisers, and reveled in being able to take the athletes to the Empire State, not that they went minus nerves. “We play good teams all the time,” Colin Eiser said of their presence in the Tri-State Elite League, “but we knew the ones there would be much better than them.” The resident of the 200 block of Jackson Street and student at Christopher Columbus Charter School, 1242-46 S. 13th St., said the Senators’ added preparation and challenging pre-expedition schedule, which included May’s second-straight run to the Swedesboro, N.J.-situated Kingsway Knights Tournament, meshed with a bit of South Philly swagger to lessen the anxiety and inspire confidence for their Aug. 3 to 9 jaunt. Knowing their foes would be equally amped, they also looked forward to the non-competitive portions of their summer sojourn, with Joseph Messina especially enthused. “We all loved having chances to match

our talent against theirs, but it was also great to interact with them,” the coach’s son and a registrant at Our Lady of Hope Regional Catholic School, 1248 Jackson St., said of living in the players’ village and trading pins with their contemporaries. “Aside from never giving up, I think we became better people by being friendly and respectful to them.” With June’s march to the semifinals of their Little League regionals also on their résumé, the youngsters offered early indications of their excitement by excelling in skills competitions and blasting four homers to trounce Florida’s Tommy Hutton Heat 14-3 in their opener. “What a great way to start,” Messina said of his all-South Philly unit’s barrage. “We knew they wouldn’t all be like that, though.” THE LOCALS QUICKLY had their resiliency tested, as they dumped their next three contests, one to an Illinois team and two to California clubs, by a combined score of

37-7. Seeing the pageant as a thrilling occasion not only because of its location but also for its ability to give them perspective ahead of next season’s move to a larger field at Seventh Street and Packer Avenue, Messina admired that they did not let the losses’ effects linger, as they captured their final pool games against a New Jersey outfit and a New York squad to advance to the playoff stage. “I think we showed character to make it that far,” the coach’s offspring, who recorded the save against the Garden State’s North Edison representatives, said. “Having been together for so long, we knew we had the resolve to get it done.” “The first [playoff] game was nutty,” Front-and-Fitzgerald-streets dweller Charlie McKenna, another Christopher Columbus pupil, whose .500 average tied for the team lead with Mason Smith, added. “It was a fun game to be a part of.” The Senators built a 3-0 advantage over the Harvard Hit Dogs yet yielded four scores to need an elimination-preventing rally, which they executed in their final swings. Squaring off against their third Golden State adversary next, they fell 8-1 Aug. 8 to end their run. “We definitely didn’t leave disappointed, though,” Colin, whose five home runs tied for second in the competition, said of visit-

ing the Hall of Fame the next day. “That really got us feeling great about being baseball players.” “I liked the artifacts and the Phillies stuff,” Charlie added. “We saw what happens when guys sacrifice for their love of the game.” “Sacrifice” resonated as a key word, though in a different sense, for Messina, who lauded parents for their hard work in making the trip not only a possibility but a full-fledged educational odyssey. “We felt like big guys because our parents weren’t with us and we had to take care of ourselves a little bit,” .421 hitter Eric Nardini, a resident of the 2900 block of South 15th Street and a learner at St. Pio Regional Catholic School, 1826 Pollock St., said, adding the trip helped him and his mates to see their tenacity will never be in vain. Receiving rings and enshrinement into the Little League Hall of Fame at the closing ceremonies, the children are already entertaining what the next few decades could bring them. “I’d like to be in the actual Hall of Fame,” Colin said, “so the older we get, the more we’ll need to rely on each other for support.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124.
