Law & Order

E D I TO R I A L C A R TO O N

(South Philly Style)

S

o, you’re moving into South Philly. Maybe you’re what they call this new generation – “millennials.” Uncle Nunzi calls you crazy. He likes to say that one of your monthly mortgage payments is higher than the TOTAL amount he paid for his house. Regardless, I’m here to help you assimilate into our South Philly culture. Set you straight. Most important thing to know? We’re very big on law and order around here. You might have heard differently. You would be wrong. You think Frank Rizzo is worshipped around here just because he was born here. And it’s true that what used to be known as Rosewood Street is now “Rizzo” Street. Unofficially, of course. But it’s official enough around here. See, the Rizzo family moved out long before Big Frank ever figured out that his baby shoes would look nicer if they were spit-shined. Frank is loved because he was all about law and order. What I’m going to do for you today, my friend, is help you fit in down here, although, you’ll never totally assimilate if you continue to wear those penny loafers without socks and that pink oxford, button-down shirt. Today’s lesson is: Law and Order – South Philly Style.” In that regard, it will help if you unlearn everything you ever knew about law and order, wherever it is you were brought up. First: You have to learn what law and order in South Philly is not. Normally, we hate shootings in our neighborhood as much as you do. However, if the shooting is a revenge hit done by an “authorized” person, we mourn. We say nice things to the news media about the deceased, like “He was a nice family man. Bought fresh fruit for the whole neighborhood. Always said, ‘hello.’” We go to the viewing. Bring a mass card. Pay our respects. Mind our own business. This does not fall under a strict definition of law and order. Rather it is a method of cleaning house. Making way for “new blood,” no pun intended. Be aware that we also have our own way of shopping. South Jersey malls are not the end-all and be-all. Why drive when you can buy a nice BOTANY 500 suit out of a neighbor’s basement. Chances are he’ll have a good selection in your size. He, he might even throw in free alterations. And again – you never have to move your car. You as a millennial might ride a bike, but it’s the same difference. By the way, we’re not hostile to bike owners. But don’t brag about your low carbon footprint. That we don’t appreciate. Basement shopping is also available for lamps, TVs, and lots of other items. Just don’t ask for a 90-day warranty. Or gift-wrapping. You might want to tip your See CARDELLA, page 10>>

Ready to Bok: By Grace Maiorano SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

hile folks are familiar with the rooftop bar on the former Bok vocational school, South Philly residents may not realize the repurposed building, a recipient of the the 2016 Young Friends of the Preservation Alliance Award, is home to dozens of artistries, activities and other businesses – from boxing lessons and guitar repairs to skin care and chiropractics. However, on Saturday, Sept. 8, the public can witness and experience the gamut of merchants taking over the former Philadelphia School District space during the building’s Made@BOK Fall Market. “The building has been around in its new life for a few years now, said Melissa Tilley, the event’s co-host, organizer and operations manager of skincare company Franklin and Whitman – one of the building’s businesses. “We love the idea of getting some of us together who are interested in making new things and meeting the public and spreading the word here. Ten of the Bok’s tenants, including Bevy of Objects, Remark Glass and Two Persons Coffee, will participate in the market, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., as the event aims to not only support these local businesses but to also potentially attract new merchants and vendors from around the region. In fact, the reimagination of this six-story structure was recently featured in a July issue of The New York Times, which says prospective tenants from New York have reached out showing interest in moving into Bok – a 340,000 square-foot property located at 1901 S. 9th St.

Fall Market planned for Saturday, Sept. 8 “The idea (of the market) came from wanting to collaborate with others in the building and spread the word about what we’re doing here and give the neighborhood and surrounding potential clients the opportunity to come and see what’s for sale and potentially purchase and gather ideas, Tilley said. The September market is actually the fourth event of its kind at Bok, which kicked off last autumn. Aside from perusing handmade products and dabbling in delicious food, like South Philly Smokhaus’ BBQ cuisine, attendees will get to mingle with entrepreneurs and other originators of the immediate area, as 80 percent of Bok’s current tenants are residents of South Philly, according to its website. While the market mostly features merchants, the building also houses several charitable organizations, as Franklin and Whitman, which will participate in the event, donates 5 percent of its sales to dog rescue organizations. “I feel like the Bok building is bursting at the seams with creativity and hard-working people, Tilley said. “And I think the event is a great way to gather some of them together and showcase their creations. The building plans to make these markets a regular event, as other Made at Bok Markets are scheduled for Small Business Saturdays in the fall and winter, including Nov. 24 and Dec. 15. Since many of the Bok businesses are by appointment only, the markets are a prime opportunity for public engagement, unveiling hidden flairs of local creators. “I just think we’d love for the markets to continue to grow, Tilley said, “spreading more awareness about the craftsmanship and creativity that’s coming out of this building and out of South Philly.

Grays Ferry native aims to build a better future Markus Mitchell was interested in technology at a young age, partially due to uncle’s influence By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

A

fter graduating high school, Markus Mitchell worked a lot of odd jobs. He worked for UPS, Chick-fil-A, and even worked as a security guard. His first job, he said, was being employed by a company that pulled and disposed of poison ivy all across the tri-state area. He’d wake up at 7 a.m. and sometimes not get home until 9 p.m. It was rough. “I’d come home all itchy and dirty, and then I’d go home and wake up and do it all over again,” he said. At some point, he got sick and tired of working odd jobs and he knew he could do better. “I know I’m not stupid,” he said. “I got to the point where I was working and working and I was getting tired and I was like ‘I can’t keep doing this.’ I’m feeling myself getting older and I had to make a move. So what was it going to be?” Mitchell, who grew up in Grays Ferry, was interested in technology from a young age, partially due to the influence of his uncle, Earl Street, Jr. Because Mitchell’s dad was a soldier fighting in Iraq for a good portion of his young life, Street served as a father figure for Mitchell. Mitchell called Street, who has a master’s degree in electrical engineering, a “techie.” “I’ll go over [to his house] and he’ll be doing anything from pulling a computer apart, or he’s in the walls working with the light switches and things like that,” Mitchell explained. “I remember making my first $20 doing a disk defrag on my mom’s friend’s computer when I was like 10 or 11 and I learned that from my uncle. And he told me if the computer’s running slow, this is the process for getting your computer back to running a little quicker.” Through a series of fortunate events and contacts through friends, Mitchell eventually found out about the TechServ Scholars AmeriCorps Program, a technology program for young adults operated by JEVS Human Services, a nonprofit and Philadelphia-based organization that seeks to “strengthen communities by realizing their highest qual-

Mitchell decided to give it a go. “Get a year of experience for free and get paid and get a free TransPass? It’s a win-win,” he said. “Why not take the journey?” In the mornings, Mitchell was assigned to work at Taller Puertorriqueño,

an organization that uses art-education programs, socially-conscious art exhibitions, book readings and events to preserve Puerto Rican and Latino culture, to serve in a tech support capacity for the people who work there. In the afternoons, Mitchell worked for the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation in a similar capacity. At both Taller and Parks and Rec, Mitchell gained hands-on experience solving IT issues for the other employees who work at the organizations. At one point, Mitchell went on a two-week vacation, and when he came

back, Taller’s education manager, Adele Rodriguez, complained her computer had spontaneously shut off twice while Mitchell was away. “It’s probably a thermal compounding of the CPU,” Mitchell told Rodriguez. “And they’re looking at me like I’m talking a foreign language. I pull it apart and sure enough the paste on the top of the CPU is dissolved and that’s why it’s not working. So they bought the paste, I put it back on and she’s had no problems since. It’s minor stuff that people may think is a big deal, but it’s really ABC123.”

Manuel Berrios, administrative specialist and Mitchell’s direct superior at Taller, lamented the end of Mitchell’s stay at the organization, which came recently. “What I really admire about him is his demeanor,” said Berrios. “He’s always available. There’s never a ‘no.’ He’s always willing to help.” Berrios said it was a “pleasure” to work with Mitchell. “We’re really pleased to have had him here and he will be missed,” he said. GRACE MAIORANO/ South Philly Review

The Phillie Phanatic rings the first official bell in the #RingTheBellPHL campaign. Of course, the mascot sounded the signature Liberty Bell at Citizens Bank Park. Below, Phillies left fielder Rhys Hoskins addresses the crowd of students

PHILLIES: Team, city, students kick off year with help from bell

<<Continued from page 1 summer preparing for the new school year, training teachers, conducting renovations and preparing facilities. Also noteworthy this year, for the first time in nearly two decades, the school district will will be run by a local school board. “We’re a brand new school board,” said board President Joyce Wilkerson. “After 17 years, the people of Philadelphia are stepping up to the the plate and going to bat for the children of Philadelphia.” The district is eager to build upon the progress it has made in recent years and hopes, through the #RingTheBell-

PHL campaign, more community partners and the general public will lend helping hands to the district. Kenney says the budget passed by city council in June has placed the city in a better financial position to continue to build upon the district’s recent progress. The mayor also bestowed some advice to students and parents, including marking calendars, making travel plans, packing bags and pick outing out school outfits the night before. “Attendance is the key for academic success,” Kenney said. “There is no substitute for consistency and being on time. This is especially true at the start of the year.”

He says students who attend classes regularly at the start of the year prove to have better chances of keeping up the attendance through the rest of the school year, as the Fightin’ Phils also echoed the mayor’s guidance. “Relating it to baseball, if I’m not here each and every day, I will not be prepared when the game starts,” Hoskins said. “If I’m not here each and every day, I cannot help my team win. I cannot learn as much as I can in order for this organization and this team to be successful.” At the conclusion of the comments, several Philadelphia public school students ran out onto The Yard – a children’s wiffle ball field located near

right field. They practiced home runs and ran the bases, scoring high fives with Hite, Hoskins, and of course, the Phanatic. Students of all ages say they’re eager to commence the 2018-2019 school year. “One of the reasons I’m excited to ring the bell,” said Khalid Abogourin, a senior at Philadelphia Virtual Academy. “Honestly, it’s ironic, but I’m entering my last year of high school, and so I really want to hustle through this year and get to college and work with the people who helped me really get to this point and really show off for them. So, let’s ring this bell, PHL.”

CARDELLA: Know your neighbors

# " !

<<Continued from page 4 “salesperson with a box of your wife’s butter cookies. If you’re told the stuff just fell off a truck, accept the discount and move on. The words “law and order don’t apply to basement shopping. If you’re at a neighborhood taproom (a bar without the fancy pub fare) and you’re asked if you want to buy tube socks, don’t be surprised. Same, if you’re ever offered to purchase meat out of the back of a station wagon. Be assured, it’s fresh and you’ll pay a whole lot less than your local supermarket charges. Just don’t ask if the meat is grass-fed or free of hormonal injections. This isn’t Whole Foods, you’re dealing with. Regarding parking. You might have heard some unflattering things about the parking problem down here. That’s probably why you bought a bike. As I said, we won’t hold that against you. We tend to park wherever we can park. You might think our parking is chaotic because we don’t always follow your rules. For instance, we double park a lot. As a NEW resident, you’re not allowed by our code of rules to double park till live here at least five years. However, WE may double park next to your car. “We, meaning us originals.

South Philly rule. Deal with it. Just the way it is. Also, during snowfalls, be advised that if someone on your block shoveled the snow in front of his house, that means that’s his or her (because we are also sensitive to women’s rights) parking spot is owned until it snows again. Put a star next to this rule. People have bravely fought and died for this right. Be respectful. On occasion, a neighbor may put a chair in a parking spot in front of their house. This practice is done in rare instances when guests are coming to celebrate a holiday. Very, very often, you’ll find your neighbors have handicapped parking. In fact, you may be the only one on your block WITHOUT handicapped parking. This doesn’t mean that your neighborhood is heavily populated with disabled residents. Not at all. In fact, they may seem very healthy to you. Accept it as the privilege for living in this part of town. Again, be respectful. Someday, you too may get handicapped parking privileges. Or you can buy a bike. Law and order around here is very basic. You get mugged. Your house is robbed. Some punk tries to deal your kid drugs. That must be dealt with. That’s law and order. Oh, enjoy your new house or apartment. You got taken.

<<Continued from page 7 But as the door closes on Mitchell’s time with Taller and Parks and Rec, at least two more have opened. He was offered more opportunities at Philadelphia Parks and Rec and JEVS. He also submitted an application to Comcast, and could end up getting a job offer there. However, regardless of what comes of the Comcast situation, Mitchell is convinced he’s dead set on taking the opportunity with JEVS, a year-long apprenticeship program that will give him an opportunity to work in the IT field, build his resume, provide hands-on learning experiences and help him obtain valuable industry credentials.

“Markus demonstrated exemplary technical skills and professional development skills at TechServ, said JEVS’ Program Manager Alia SuttonBey, who helped recruit Mitchell to JEVS’ apprenticeship program. “We do a check-in every month to see how the scholars are doing. Every time we would talk to the folks at Taller or PPR they had nothing but great things to say about how he takes care in the equipment and what he’s doing. Not bad for a soon-to-be 23-year-old who’s networking his way up the ladder and has yet to earn a college degree. TOM BECK/South Philly Review

Seattle-based glam punk outfit Tacocat performs in front of a packed house last Thursday night at South Broad Street’s Boot and Saddle.

Tacocat rails against the patriarchy at Boot and Saddle By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

P

icking up where Bikini Kill left off in the Pacific Northwest’s Riot Grrrl movement, Tacocat did their best to help dismantle the patriarchy at Boot and Saddle last Thursday night. The surf punk quartet, which features singer Emily Nokes, drummer Lelah Maupin, bassist Bree McKenna and guitarist Eric Randall, is the architect of songs with titles such as “Men Explain Things to Me,” “Hey Girl” and “Crim-

son Wave,” and they have no time for your sexism. “Feel Free to say ‘hey girl’ in this space,” Nokes quipped, egging fans to sing along before her band launched into the song, “and then never again.” We can’t be entirely sure the crowd took that advice, but judging by the reaction of the female-dominated audience, people seemed on board with the idea. A noted showwoman, Nokes danced, played the tambourine and made frequent conversation with members of the audience, all of whom seemed to be more used to Philadel-

phia’s summer humidity than she and the rest of the band were. “Do you get used to the humidity?” she asked before receiving a resounding “no” from the audience. In addition to “Hey Girl,” “Crimson Wave” and “Bridge to Hawaii” – all tracks off the band’s 2014 debut album NVM, the Seattle-based punk rockers also performed several from their most recent record, 2016’s Lost Time, including “Dana Katherine Scully,” “Horse Grrrls” and “The Internet.” The best part about Tacocat is that they don’t overthink the music. The songs are

four chords with simple drum patterns, and there’s no need for a deep analysis of the lyrics, especially since most of the songs are tongue-in-cheek anthems about important feminist issues, or dumb diatribes against things like unintelligent social media commenters. Check out this stanza from “The Internet”: “Hate from the basement Hate from the insecure When you’re anonymous No consequence to fear Your place is so low Human mosquito No conversation only vitriol”

It’s straightforward and easy to discern, but not in a way that’s feeble-minded or whiny. Also the “human mosquito” line is as funny as it is inventive. All the band’s songs feature earworm-worthy melodies, clever lyrics and a catchiness that makes you wonder how much longer they’ll be playing small bars like Boot and Saddle. But according to the band, Tacocat has some new material on the horizon, which likely means a third album is imminent. With any luck, it’ll be the one that deservedly propels Tacocat into the mainstream.

Rising sports radio star started out as just an Eagles fan By Joe Mason SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

E

ytan Shander started out as one of us. Shander, who hosts shows on the Fanatic, is now on the radio at all times. If Mike Missanelli is out, Shander takes over his show during the afternoon. If Anthony Gargano is on vacation, Shander calls the shots on the morning show. He also hosts an extremely popular show on weekends. Now, he’s the guy running the show on the popular sports talk station, but growing up, Shander was one of the guys in the 700 level at Veterans Stadium cheering on his Eagles. “I’m from New York, but my uncle was a huge Eagles fan and he would take me to games,” Shander said. “I love the Eagles. My uncle is from South Philly and he is the one who got me to become a fan, and it’s really influenced a lot of what I’m doing.” Now he’s one of the most trusted and popular voices in Philly sports radio, but Shander certainly worked his way into this position. After graduating with a philosophy degree from Gettysburg College, he went on to study at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. Ever since graduating there in 2004, he’s been working in radio. But it wasn’t always the glamorous life of talking sports with Philly sports fans. He did whatever it took to get his foot in the door. “I worked at a small station in Atlantic City and got to learn so much there,” Shander said. “Not all on the air, I was doing everything they needed. “When I first got in, I was working in the promotions department. I would do a lot of data entry, typing in names of people who would enter contests at remotes. I would go to remotes, going to places like a car dealership and I’d have to set up huge inflatable cats. People would come up and ask for them. It was nuts.” He also took a job in Princeton at an ESPN Radio affiliate, and then he headed to Nashville, which is where he got his first break in a big market radio station. Then he came back home to Philly with WIP. He would mostly work as a

Photo special to South Philly Review

Eytan Shander wears many hats at the Fanatic radio station, including hosting the morning and afternoon shows when called upon, as well as his own show on weekends. producer and an update guy, but eventually got an overnight shift. “I was very lucky because in my career,” Shander said, “I had two legends help me, Angelo Cataldi and Michael Smerconish. Both helped me. They would encourage me and give me advice. “I’ve had a lot of help. Jason Myrtetus, who hosts the midday show now, but he helped get me on the air and (former WIP program director) Andy Bloom helped me. I’ve been very lucky to have so many great people helping

me. You can’t do it alone.” On Aug. 25, Shander will have some help celebrating some of the greatest days in Philly sports when he and the rest of the hosts from his station attend Fanfest, the day the Fanatic takes over Xfinity Live for an all-day party celebrating all things Philadelphia. It’s an unofficial kickoff to football season, and gives fans a chance to hang out with people they listen to on the radio every day. “It’s a great day, I’ll be hanging at the bar, buying drinks for people,”

Shander said. “We’re giving away a trip to London for the Eagles game and Ben Simmons will be there, hanging out for a little bit. There’s bands there, we rent out Xfinity Live and it’s our chance to say ‘thank you’ to all the people who listen. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is when you’re in this line of work, you want to be with the people. Some guys will go to a remote, smile and then do their show. I go early. I want to talk to the people. I love talking to people. It’s great to talk to people who agree with

you, but I love talking to people who disagree with you. That’s what makes sports talk fun.” Also making Shander’s job fun are the Philly sports teams. Right now, Philadelphia is riding a hot streak. The Flyers are competitive, the Phillies and Sixers look like they’re starting to head to the top of their sports after long rebuilds, and the Eagles are the world champs. It might never get better. “I don’t think Philadelphia has ever had what they have now,” Shander said. “With the Sixers, I don’t remember this, even when we had (Allen) Iverson. That was a great time, we knew we had a great player, but this is different. The Phillies, look, (2008) was great, but now we have every team. And the Eagles are coming off the Super Bowl. That’s something we have never experienced. Fan Fest will be celebrating all of that.” Fan Fest will be one day for the fans to get together and talk sports. But Shander will be doing that for the foreseeable future. He’s still focused on doing his best at the Fanatic. He’s also now doing a segment on Fox 29’s Good Day Philadelphia and does some work for SB Nation, a national sports website that hosts blogs and podcasts. He’s come a long way from when he’s started, but he’s still doing his best to pick up tricks of the trade. He wants to continue to do what he loves most – discuss sports and pop culture in the place he loves. “I want to keep getting better,” Shander said. “I will watch other guys. I won’t do what they do, or use their bits, but I’ll learn another way to talk to someone. You have to keep learning. “You have to run a show that people like. Sometimes when we’re not talking sports, we’ll talk about TV shows, so you have to stay up and watch TV or Netflix. “I think I’m a reflection of opportunity and work. I don’t have a family, I’m 39 years old, but I’m able to be flexible because I’m not married, I can do whatever they need. I still need to get better, I’m always trying to learn. I love what I do, and when you love what you do, you want to do it right.” Especially when you’re doing it for your fellow Eagles fans.

EAGLES INSIDER

Injuries in question as Eagles near Sept. 6 opener

S

ept. 6 and a glorious opener to the NFL season waits for the Philadelphia Eagles who, as dutiful defending Super Bowl champions, host the kickoff game of 2018, lower the championship banner at Lincoln Financial Field and then they play football. The general effectiveness of the offense, one that led the league in scoring for much of 2017, is just about as unknown to the coaching staff at this very moment as it is to you. “The offense shouldn’t change much no matter who the quarterback is,” AllPro right tackle Lane Johnson said. “We just roll with whoever is back there.” No doubt about that. The Eagles rolled to a win in Super Bowl LII with Nick Foles after Carson Wentz was injured seven weeks prior, and the points

mounted on the scoreboard. This year, though, with Sept. 6 bearing down, the offensive picture is about as unsettled as a defending Super Bowl champion can have for one reason, and one reason only: Injuries. Wentz, rehabilitating from knee surgery to repair his torn ACL, has not yet been cleared for game action and nobody really knows when that clearance is going to come. If Wentz can’t go, then Foles gets

Dave

Spadaro

the call to start the season. Beyond the quarterbacks, there are more questions that add to the muddy outlook. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery hasn’t stepped on a football field since the Super Bowl. He’s recovering from a torn rotator cuff and is a question mark to be there for the opener. Wide receiver Nelson Agholor is “day to day” with a lower-body injury, according to head coach Doug Pederson, and likely won’t play for the remainder of the preseason. Second-year receiver Mack Hollins is in the same boat as Agholor, without the resume built from a superlative 2017 campaign. Furthermore, left tackle Jason Peters, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 7 of ’17, hasn’t and won’t play in the preseason. Peder-

son thinks that Peters is such a special player and so on track in practice that he doesn’t need preseason to get sharp for the regular season. Certainly, Peters has the career portfolio that would suggest he can pull that off, but he’s 35 years old and, as they say, with age comes uncertainty. Running back Darren Sproles is also on the comeback trail after his 2017 season ended in Week 3 when he went down with a torn ACL and a broken arm in the victory over the Giants at Lincoln Financial Field. He isn’t going to play in the preseason as the Eagles bank that his experience and the explosiveness they’ve seen on the practice field will translate to Week 1. Those are a lot of “ifs” for a team built for high octane. In the time crunch

that are the final weeks before Atlanta comes to town, Pederson has a lot on his plate. Just how much offense can the Eagles expect early in the season? Can they knock all the rust from players who haven’t seen much, if any, preseason action? Will the defense have to tow the offense along early in the season until the Eagles find their stride with the ball in their collective hands? We’re at the point in the preseason when the only thing that matters is preparing for the regular season. How quickly can the Eagles put all of the offensive pieces together? It’s a puzzle that needs to come together very quickly for the Eagles to get off to the kind of start they want in the regular season.
