A Girard Estate resident surrendered when police allegedly caught him burglarizing a Marconi home.
Political strategist James Carville once said that Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between. I doubted that until I stopped at a gas station restroom in the rural part of the state and found a photo of George Corley Wallace above the urinal I was using.

Not adding up To the Editor: Philadelphia’s high school graduation rate is well under 70 percent. The city is full of prestigious universities, yet less than 25 percent of the adult population has attained a bachelor’s degree to date. What these universally agreed upon stats prove is the majority of students who attend public schools are not being adequately prepared to handle the rigors of college. A president/CEO of a cutting-edge company that is seeking to expand to a new area with a built-in educated population is most likely going to pass on Philadelphia. A poorly educated population affects the bottom line of living wage jobs being created and impedes upon economic growth overall in the city. If by labeling someone a “reformer you mean a person who would desire Philadelphia to one day be a destination for companies such as
Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon or Apple — “the wave of the future to set up satellite campuses in the city, then call me a reformer. In the recently aired radio and television ads, you don’t hear teachers saying to the community that as a whole we will strive to do better, and there is more work to be done to improve the system. The majority of teachers just seem to be interested in supporting political bashing campaigns for anyone who holds the office. Or it’s all the parents’ fault why so many students are doing so poorly in the school system. Taxpayers give us more and more money for the same old pathetic results. Most Philadelphia teachers complain they are being paid too little. For starters why doesn’t the school district post on its website the specific details of the salary and benefits package of every teacher and

administrator? You are public employees and in the information age this type of info should not only be made public but also be readily available to parents. As taxpayers, it’s our right to know what tangible improvements are we going to see once we dish out more money for a failing school district that has been on the decline for several decades. What’s the magic number when the excuses end and the improvements become evident in public education? Citizens are tired of writing larger checks to an institution year in and year out that continues to fail our children regardless who sits behind the mayor’s and governor’s desk. In the not-too-distant past we had a democratic mayor and a democratic governor and the schools were still performing like crap. Jason Kaye Northeast Philadelphia

Backed down A Girard Estate resident surrendered when police allegedly caught him burglarizing a Marconi home. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor
A
man, who allegedly broke into a property Monday, also was linked to a similar crime at a West Passyunk eatery in July. Nicholas Rescigno, 39, of the 1800 block of Roseberry Street, allegedly entered a home on the 2900 block of South 18th Street through a front basement window at 12:38 p.m. Monday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Upon police arrival, they entered yelling, “Police” at which time Rescigno is believed to have said, “You got me,” and started to lay down, placing his hands over his head. The 27-year-old female resident’s belongings that Rescigno allegedly bagged up were recovered, Tolliver said. Rescigno also was charged in the burglary at King of Wings, 2233 S. Woodstock St., at 4:21 a.m. July 21, Tolliver said. He is believed to have entered the West Passyunk business through a front window, according to police. After repeated attempts to open the cash register within a four-minute timeframe, he allegedly placed the till in a garbage bag and escaped out of the same window he entered. He is believed to have pulled the bag through the window, but dropped it on the sidewalk, causing it to rip, according to video surveillance. He then allegedly fled eastbound on West Passyunk with the register. He was charged with two counts of burglary, criminal trespassing, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief, along with one count of possession of an instrument of crime, according to court records. His bail, which had not been posted by press time, was set at $50,000. Rescigno pled guilty to a Montgomery County theft in 2005 and 10 South Philly burglaries in ’01, according to court records.
Robbery gone wrong A Gray Ferry man is believed to have contributed to the homicide of a Chester City drugstore employee. David Wiggins, 24, of the 1500 block of South 30th Street, was arrested Saturday at his home for his alleged involvement in the slaying of Jason McClay, 40, of Broomall, who was working at the Chester Rite Aid at 9:54 p.m. Sept. 19. Wiggins and Rita Pultro, 23, of North Philly, allegedly attempted to rob the store where McClay served as a manager, according to pub-
lished reports and court records. Investigators believe Pultro fired the shot that took McClay’s life, according to published reports. The store manager was pronounced dead at the scene. Wiggins was charged with first- and third-degree murder, conspiracy, possession of a weapon, carrying a firearm without a license and recklessly endangering another person while Pultro, who was arrested Sunday in Northeast Philly, was charged with first-, second- and third-degree murder, criminal homicide, robbery, carrying a firearm without a license and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records.

In an apparent suicide, police located an 83-year-old man deceased at a Marconi green space Monday afternoon. Police responded to the east side of Marconi Plaza, 2700 S. Broad St., at 12:16 p.m. where officers found the man, whose name police withheld, slumped beside a large tree near the Broad Street side of the park with one self-inflicted gunshot to the chest, 3rd District Lt. John Hewitt said. Medics pronounced him dead eight minutes later. Authorities wrapped up their investigation at about 1:50 p.m., but it still was unclear when the shot occurred or what his mental state was at the time of the incident, Hewitt said. The revolver used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.
Wild gunfire A man was wounded in the face in Point Breeze last week. An officer responded to the 2200 block of Tasker Street for a person shot at 1:15 a.m. Sept. 18 and located the victim, who was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with a gunshot wound to his face and left arm, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The gunfire also struck two unattended

A detailed description of the other offender, who was armed with a .40 caliber handgun, was not available at press time. A teen was assaulted until she handed over her phone in Southeast Philly last week. The 16-year-old female was walking along the 2000 block of South Seventh Street at 5:45 a.m. Sept. 18 when the robber walked up behind her and said, “Give me your phone,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Her inaction resulted in him punching her in the face, pushing her down and choking her until she handed over her Samsung Galaxy S II phone. The thief fled westbound on Mercy Street while she headed south to Snyder Avenue where she flagged down a taxi to call the cops. The offender was described as white or Latino, age 20 to 30, 5-foot-6, stocky, and wearing dark clothing, including black fingerless gloves and a mask partially covering his face. A thief held a man at gunpoint, swiping his cash and wedding band, in West Passyunk Saturday. The 34-year-old was walking westbound on the 2100 block of McKean Street when an armed man ordered him to go between two parked cars on Beechwood Street where another armed man was located, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The duo rummaged through his pockets where they found his wallet and $700. The pair also stole his wedding ring before fleeing in an unknown direction. The initial gunman was described as black with a light complexion, 5-foot10 to 5-foot-11, having a medium build and wearing a dark-colored hoodie. A back-page ad investigation led the Citywide Vice Unit to the 1000 block of South Randolph Street Saturday, police said. There they arrested Patrick Brown, 38, of that block and Ashley Henne, 19, of Bridesburg. The District AttorAshley Henne ney’s Office did not charge Brown. Columbus Blvd., where they purchased iced tea, snacks and cigarettes with a stolen credit card before fleeing south on Columbus on a motorcycle. The woman was described as age 30 to 40; having a heavy build, brown hair pulled in a ponytail and glasses; and wearing a pink shirt, blue pants and white sneakers. The man was described as white, age 30 to 40; having a medium build, close-cropped brown hair and a light goatee; and wearing an orange shirt with “Show Time” written in white on the front, tan pants and black and white sneakers. Wheels of fortune Lifelong friends will take to their bicycles to raise funds for multiple schlerosis research. ■ By Joseph Myers
Michael Gargano, from left, and Vincent Bonaccorso have readied themselves for their nearly 200-mile humanitarian effort.

E
ver since their days as students at St. Monica School, 17th and Ritner streets and 16th and Porter streets, Michael Gargano and Vincent Bonaccorso have served as lasting inuences on each other. Stoking esteem over their decades-long friendship, the 36-year-olds also appreciate the value of extending good vibes to in-need figures and will band together this weekend for the New Jersey-situated Bike MS: City to Shore event, a product of their desire to lessen multiple sclerosis patients’ numerous ordeals. “It’s something that takes only my time and yields so many benefits,” Gargano said Monday evening as he and his chum rode their bicycles at Marconi Plaza, 2700 S. Broad St. “We’re excited to continue our involvement because the need for help is growing every day.” The resident of 18th Street and Oregon Avenue and captain for the seven-member Team TBD will make his fourth trek through the Garden State, his third to show support for a neighbor battling the autoimmune disease, which affects the brain and spinal cord and wreaks havoc on bladders, bowels, faces, limbs and muscles. Bonaccorso, who in addition to attending elementary school with Gargano ventured to St. John Neumann High School, formerly 2600 Moore St., now Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., will also make his fourth journey yet first as his buddy’s teammate. “I did it awhile back after finding out about the cause through friends,” the inhabitant of the 2100 block of Shunk Street said. “I ran into Mike last year, and that rekindled my desire to do it.” In riding alongside each other during the non-competitive test, the two decided to mesh their enthusiasm for aiding the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s outreach to 400,000 courageous fighters. With that imposing total as added motivation, they knew their moment to amass money had arrived. “When I did my first Bike MS ride, I was mainly looking for a challenge and seeing it as a push-myself type of thing,” Marconi’s Gargano said of his 2010 debut. “The fundraising aspect has come to be such a rewarding component of it.” He has enjoyed steady bumps in his

procured riches and had obtained close to $6,000 as of press time, setting the pace for Team TBD, whose shirts feature question marks surrounding The Riddler, which has a $10,000 goal. He and his Girard Estatebased confidant helped to generate a hefty chunk of the currency through a Sept. 13 gathering at the Citizens Bank Park-situated McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon, 1 Citizens Bank Way, and can accept contributions even after their excursion. “It gives us a great feeling when all is said and done,” Gargano said. “It keeps us in shape, but, more importantly, it provides hope.” RELYING ON HIS Type-A personality for another dose of diligence, the team leader built up his resolve through Sunday sojourns atop his trusty bicycle. Using the Schuylkill River Trail as a chief destination, he and Bonaccorso gradually upped their endurance challenges and find themselves the epitome of prepared for their bonding experience. “The list grows each year of those I know
or come into contact with who have MS,” Bonaccorso, a senior fraud investigator for a Trenton-centered company said. “Because of that, there are many personal rewards to my participation.” To make sure they shred their legs, the pals have elected to ride 100 miles Saturday and 75 Sunday, with Gargano expecting their outings to last 11 hours. “And after that, we’re going to swim 10 miles and run,” Bonaccorso said jokingly. With Gargano, the director of food safety for a Southwest Philly-situated outfit, at the helm, the riders, including some event rookies, will become weekend warriors for a cause that has raised more than $50 million since the ride’s 1980 inception. The locals make their mounting their main way to support the fight against multiple sclerosis and do so while being well aware of their decision’s emotional qualities. “My pain is temporary; theirs is permanent,” Bonaccorso, who is married with two children, said. “We definitely don’t do this for any reason other than to build up the people who will benefit from what hap-
pens this weekend.” As the second largest MS fundraiser of its kind in the United States, trailing only a Houston-based one, the Bike MS: City to Shore challenge serves to aid patients’ handling of the incurable disease, with at least 14,000 sufferers residing in the Philadelphia area. Though their team name reflects a touch of uncertainty, Gargano and Bonaccorso have no doubts about how much their participation will profit the afflicted individuals. “It’s been great to prepare together because it takes unity to fight back against MS,” Gargano, who is married with three children, said. “As we go forward, we hope to raise even more to try to make an even bigger difference.” “That’s what it’s about,” Bonaccorso added. “Keeping up the momentum and building more.” SPR

TREEPHILLY
Branching out
continued from page 1 olis into America’s greenest city by 2015. Through the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department, which last year launched the TreePhilly Initiative to encourage businesses, property owners and residents to plant and maintain the woody wonders, last week’s hosts and guests have heeded the call for civic duty, with promises to promote involvement at their core. “So many people are engaged, and I believe South Philadelphia has a great opportunity to head to the forefront for participation,” Andrew Emma, TreePhilly’s program manager, said, noting a desire to boost its canopy cover, the area of land shaded by trees, well above the 3 percent determination by a City-commissioned University of Vermont study two years ago. “They remember when the canopy was high, and they want those trees back.” The resident of the 1300 block of South Ninth Street serves as the beautification committee co-chair for the Passyunk Square Civic Association, whose members and neighborhood helpers have added 1,200 trees over the last decade, with good tallies arising through TreePhilly’s Yard Tree Program, which bestows free trees to interested parties. The fall portion of the sign-up cycle began Sept. 16 and will run through Oct. 31, with as many as 10 species, including fruit trees, available for November pickup. Passyunk Square’s Columbus Square Park, 1200 Wharton St., will host a giveaway Nov. 10, and Emma and his colleagues are studying, mulching and pruning present plants to build community momentum. Those behaviors and similar efforts earned accolades from Nutter, who congratulated the attendees for transforming Philadelphia into the “City of Arborly Love.” “We need to tout the benefits of trees,” the second-term leader said, with praise for the volunteers responsible for 25 percent of the six-figure total as his selling point for seeing interest as being for all. “Nights like this make clear we are making an impact.” Nutter had initially sought to increase the city’s tree population by 300,000, but Michael DiBerardinis, the deputy mayor for community and environmental resources, stated revised projections have put the figure at closer to 250,000. “I think we all get it,” he said. “If you get involved, we can move this city in breathtaking ways toward sustainability.” WHILE DIBERARDINIS PAID respect to the throng, Rich Cedrone huddled with his colleagues to prepare for their literal moment in the sun. As the president of the 97-yearold park’s friends group and the South Philadelphia Communities Civic Associa-

tion, he has striven to strengthen senses of well-being for the community at large, an aim with ample support from the Sports Complex Special Services District, 3300 S. Seventh St., which recently completed a beautification project at the east and west corners of Broad and Bigler streets. “It’s exciting to have this ceremony in our backyard because we’re proud of our history and are looking forward to the future,” the resident of the 2700 block of South Iseminger Street said of the expanse, which served as the grand pre-entrance for the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition and took on its name in ’37 in honor of Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi. “Interest is growing in helping our cause, too, so we’re continuing to get ourselves out there because we believe in our work and what others are doing, too.” Under Cedrone’s watch, the recreation location has had its playgrounds resurfaced, benches replaced and lighting difficulties addressed. Eager to show off its amenities, the board members have further aligned themselves with parks and recreation and the conservancy for LOVE Your Park events, with the next display of greenery revelry to come Nov. 16. They have also connected with the American Cancer Society to sponsor the Relay For Life of South Philadelphia tribute to cancer patients and fallen battlers and host movie nights, with Oct. 4’s presentation of “The Lorax” as their upcoming film. “We also have a seasonal worker to keep the park clean for six months,” Cedrone said of another positive of his relationship with parks and recreation. “There are big
things coming for us, so it was important to get out here tonight to show how far we’ve come.” He and his allies are looking to install a garden by next year and could foresee adding it to the South Philly Garden Tour. Cedrone also noted the possibility of adding an Italian anchor soon, with the dedication of it likely to come at a future Columbus Day Parade. No matter what they come to add, the Marconi figures are enjoying their successes and had their work lauded when Nutter presented them, Emma, the Lower Moyamensing Civic Association, Southeast Philadelphia Collaborative, 2029 S. Eighth St., and other entities with framed commendations. To inspire comparable feats, Wells Fargo Co. Greater Philadelphia/ Delaware Region President Greg Redden gave a $200,000 check to TreePhilly, itself a supporter of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s three-state Plant One Million campaign. “There’s a lot of work ahead, but it’s the rewarding sort for sure,” Lower Moyamensing Civic Association president and 10th-and-Wolf-streets resident Kim Massare, whose neighborhood has added 300 trees, said. “One thing is clear,” Timothy Clair, conservancy senior director of operations and planning, added. “Planting a tree has become the thing to do.” SPR Visit treephilly.org.

Rerouting traffic
P
enn National Gaming Inc., which hopes to secure a Category 2 slot machine license to build Hollywood Casino Philadelphia at 700 Packer Ave, has reviewed and approved an initial plan, in partnership with its trafc consultants, Pennoni Associates, for a direct, westbound access ramp onto Interstate-76. The Wyomissing-based company has committed to City ofcials to include the cost of the ramp, an estimated $3 million, as part of the off-site improvements should it be awarded the license. “It became very apparent to us in early meetings with residents of surrounding neighborhoods that westbound I-76 access traffic is a current and future concern for them. In turn, we also want to better the ease of access to and from our site for our customers without interruption by events taking place in the stadium district,” Karen Bailey, Penn National’s vice president for public affairs, said in a release. A South-of-South tenor will help to address persecution and perseverance in his next role.

“I
think opera tells stories with the greatest amount of impact,” John Viscardi said last week from his home on the 2400 block of Grays Ferry Avenue. “I feel fortunate to use my voice to convey those tales.” Beginning tomorrow and lasting through Oct. 6, the grateful South-of-South inhabitant will display his infatuation with inflection by playing the surly soldier Abdallo in Opera Philadelphia’s production of “Nabucco.” In tackling the difficult character, Viscardi is furthering his appreciation for composer Giuseppe Verdi, whose 200th birth-year celebration he and his peers are honoring through the Academy of Music-situated show. “He and [Gaetano] Donizetti are really the pinnacle for tenors,” the 30-year-old said, acknowledging the former as a master of mammoth creations. “With this opera, he developed ideas that he took to other works, which I’m also preparing in the hopes of exploring them soon, too.” Viscardi landed his part earlier this year, strengthening ties with Opera Philadelphia that began during his days as a pupil at the Center City-based Academy of Vocal Arts. An often-neglected gem in Verdi’s catalogue, “Nabucco” found its maker commenting on Austria’s 19th-century occupation of his Italian homeland by likening the peril to the ancient Jews’ exile

under the titular Babylonian king. Though the opus possesses what Viscardi dubs “an awesome love story,” he believes a different component also allows it to resonate with today’s audiences. “Conflict is the root of the opera, and the saliency of the subject matter, with persecution and strife, is relevant to what’s happening in many parts of the world,” the singer said, “so it’s crucial to learn how people adapt.” Having pledged allegiance to his ruler yet also engaging in self-serving behavior, Abdallo offers an interesting test for Viscardi, with the mental requirements outweighing the physical ones. “I play a jerk in many ways and give an audience a look at what it’s like to be conflicted,” he said. “I have a nasty scene that touches on that, which I see as a reflection of the emotional context of that era and Verdi’s time, too.” With themes such as rage, romance, regret and redemption, “Nabucco,” a success upon its 1842 debut, addresses power’s shortcomings and patriotism’s ability to unite and divide. For Viscardi, the composition, whose Italian identity has led director and set designer Thaddeus Strassberger to transform the venue into a reflection of La Scala, the renowned Milan opera house
that staged the premiere, is intensifying his artistry and compelling him to become a more formidable presence in interpreting and promoting masterpieces. “Abdallo is a stepping stone in my immersion,” the performer said. “Verdi gave us so many engrossing pieces, and he’s so demanding, you can’t try to sing them. You have to know how to, and I’m enjoying preparing for this show and fostering love for his output.” VISCARDI DEVELOPED HIS overall affinity for music as a Long Island, N.Y. youth. Courtesy of his paternal grandmother, he gravitated toward tunes from Mario Lanza, a product of the 600 block of Christian Street, and added Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra to his note-based existence early on, too. He made his high school years reflections of his commitment to measures by joining numerous bands and choirs, with operatic sensitivities also surfacing during his secondary education tenure. “I wanted to get into the scene, and it didn’t take long to realize opera was for me,” the Empire State native said. “The interest kept growing, and I wanted to become a true student of the art.” Viscardi initiated his intense preparation
by attending New York University, earning an undergraduate degree in vocal performance and a graduate commendation in music performance with an opera concentration. Growing in confidence from having handled work by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others, he knew he needed extra tutelage and entered the Academy of Vocal Arts four years ago. “I really feel I developed my voice for this competitive world after two years,” Viscardi said. “The whole process of maturing as an admirer and performer of different operas enthuses me, and I’m thrilled I’ve been able to do so in Philly.” In addition to earning admittance into the Academy of Vocal Arts in 2009, he received local kudos that year when the Mario Lanza Institute and Museum, 712 Montrose St., gave him a scholarship to engross himself in his pursuits even more. “That was my first award, and what a great one to get,” Viscardi said. “It’s such a fantastic organization because it keeps alive the memory of someone who’s meant so much to so many, including me, and supports young talent, too.” Since his watershed year, which included his debut at his home state’s Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts, the artist has gone on to add accolades such as the Liederkranz Foundation Award, an Encouragement Prize from the George London Foundation and the Academy of Vocal Arts’ Giargiari Bel Canto Competition prize. Having graduated in May, he traveled to New Mexico this summer for more training and scored the Anna Case MacKay Memorial Award from the Santa Fe Opera. “I feel blessed to have had a number of opportunities to contribute to the legacy of opera,” Viscardi, who aspires to appear in Verdi’s “La traviata” and “Rigoletto,” Charles Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” and Jules Massenet’s “Werther,” said. With his upcoming artistic turn and domestic bliss with Molly, his wife of one year, the easygoing figure finds himself growing in confidence and credits his community for offering added gusto. “I love the feel of the neighborhood,” he said of his two-year haunt. “The whole city is vibrant and has all the tools to help artists grow.” SPR For tickets, visit operaphila.org. Let them use a stagecoach
P
see falling bridges as a plus. Our state senate, which is full of socialists, passed a mass transit bill back in June that would’ve resulted in a $510-million giveaway to Babylon (that’s what we call Philadelphia, and I personally am sponsoring a bill that would require that city to change its name). That bill has about as much chance of clearing the House as me hanging a picture of Ed Rendell over my bedpost. “I want to show you city folks that me and my fellow Republicans in the House are not bad people. We go to church on Sundays just like you city folks do, or make that like you city folks should do, which gives me an idea that maybe I should introduce a bill to link church attendance in Philadelphia to funds for your mass transit and city schools. I got to dial up Gov. Tom Corbett on that one. Might help his campaign, which frankly is sagging since he went all soft on us on helping some of those shiftless folks get health insurance. Anyway, I digress. I’m willing to put my neck in a noose and even let my wife put one of her delicate parts in a wringer by proposing a compromise to help Philadelphia’s mass transit system. “Why can’t you use a fleet of stagecoaches? You know like the one that I hear Wells Fargo has in its museum in Center City? I’m serious. You could kill two wild turkeys with one stone — hire the unemployed to build the darn things and the smarter ones could learn to drive them. Could work as a jobs program, get the poor off their hindquarters and out working, and give Philly riders a way to get to work (and appreciate the great history of our country at the same time). You don’t need gas for a stagecoach, so it’s also a way to get the environmental nuts off my back, too. Of course, you would need some of the poor folks to clean up after the horses, but hell, let them earn their welfare. “Now I know this isn’t a perfect solution, but that’s what compromise is — an imperfect solution. It probably means that the folks in wheelchairs won’t be able to hitch a ride on a stagecoach, but I’m figuring if they’re already in a wheelchair why do they need a ride anyway? And those free loading old folks who are nourishing themselves at the teat of Social Security, well, they’re just going to have stop gallivanting about town and get their lazy offspring to deliver the groceries to them. Get rid of the free riders and you reduce your expenses. It’s simple math. “Lot of folks in my district have a warm spot for the stagecoach anyway. It’s a piece of Americana. Hey, they could get rid of mail carriers and use those stagecoaches to deliver the mail, too.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.
Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), from left, aims to find the missing daughter of Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman).
Charges of mediocrity ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer
I
know plenty of people who’ll be gaga for “Prisoners,” and you do, too. There’s a faction of moviegoers who love their thrillers ultra-twisty and their big-name actors acting with to-the-limit intensity. That’s all fine and good — people like what they like. And “Prisoners” boasts the benefit of having been shot by Roger Deakins, one of the finest cinematographers in history, who lends the film invaluable detail and polish, and scenes of almost inexplicably gorgeous urgency (with blood from a head wound seeping into his eye, one character’s rough navigation through the lights of a rainsoaked highway is a virtuoso sequence). But beyond an “aw, snap!” kick in the tail, which results from a clue-laden, but only mildly involving, braid of tricky plot lines, there’s not much to take away from this film—nothing of great substance or thought-provoking thematic value. It may seem complicated on the surface: Two suburban couples, Keller and Grace Dover (Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello), and Franklin and Nancy Birch (Terrence Howard and Viola Davis), suffer the horror of their respective daughters’ sudden disappearances, and when cops like Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) don’t provide speedy results, Keller, in particular, takes the law into his own hands. The instantaneous ethical conflict of such an action — to be specific, Keller kidnaps and tortures key suspect Alex Jones (Paul Dano) — is one parents and non-parents alike can find intriguingly controversial. But “Prisoners,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, doesn’t explore the controversy much further than what’s stated in the synopsis, proving more inter-
ested in the shallow convolution of Aaron Guzikowski’s script. Granted, there are ample curious hooks to keep you interested, and the acting, though overcooked, is still frequently impressive, especially thanks to Jackman and Howard. Ultimately, though, the film is little more than a puffed-up, star-studded, competent crime thriller, whose glaring typecasting points to its limited perspective (Bello, Dano, and Melissa Leo get thankless roles they could play in their sleep). If you find yourself unable to grasp the moral of the story, that’s because there isn’t one.

If you’re not prepared to shell out the dough for the recent theatrical re-release of “The Wizard of Oz,” screening in Imax 3-D, perhaps you’ll be more inclined to add its special edition Blu-ray to your library or Netflix queue. Timed, like the film’s new theatrical run, to the fantasy classic’s 75th anniversary, this new cut of everyone’s favorite over-the-rainbow adventure promises a pristine transfer, with redder ruby slippers and yellower Yellow Brick Roads than you’ve ever seen before. olitical strategist James Carville once said that Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between. I doubted that until I stopped at a gas station restroom in the rural part of the state and found a photo of George Corley Wallace above the urinal I was using. Being the moderate that I am, I believe we city folks have to make an effort to understand our rural legislators better. We can begin by understanding why, if you are a House Republican in the “Alabama” portion of our state, you oppose giving SEPTA any more money. Here is an excerpt from my interview with Chester Alan Mathers, a rural legislator from Pennsylvania. “I tend to associate the name SEPTA with septic tank — something that has to be cleaned on a regular basis. My constituents require only one thing and one thing only when it comes to me representing them in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, that I stick it to them high falutin’ city folks every chance I get. Most of the letters I get are composed of three words when it comes to Philadelphia — Just Vote No. Once I visited Philadelphia (I didn’t even stay overnight) and the next thing I knew my constituents heard about it, and some butt crack from the Tea Party was running against me in the primary. So what is it about voting not to give SEPTA more money that you big city slickers don’t understand? “The SEPTA folks come to Harrisburg every time we’re working on their financial needs and they never say, ‘we already have enough money to transport all those minorities, the wheelchair brigade and really old people who ride for free.’ No, they tell us about a couple of bridges that are about to fall down if we don’t kick in more greenbacks. If that’s not bad enough, they paint this doomsday scenario where they’ll have to close down rail lines, a subway line and convert trolley routes to bus lines if we don’t cave in soon. Do they really think the guy who calls himself “A great American” and complains to me on a daily basis about giving all that money to “Filthy Philly” really gives a hoot if a bridge falls down now and then? “This guy has me on speed dial. My constituents think rotten infrastructure is a way of “thinning the herd” in the big city. They

Here are a few ideas to spoil your guests: · · · · ·
Place a small silver bell at each place setting, and then observe the tradition of kissing your new spouse each time one rings. Fill favor boxes or organza bags with a sweet treat, such as Jordan almonds or pillow mints. Small silver frames can do double-duty as wedding favors and place card holders. Greet guests at an outdoor wedding with ornate fans to keep them cool. Encourage your guests to kick up (or off) their heels by providing a basket of cute flip flops for dancing.
Another memorable gift is to honor your guests with a donation to a charity that is special to you and your fiancée. Announce your gift on a handcrafted tag attached to a beautiful candle. The decorative candles can be clustered around the centerpieces at the reception or simply used as the centerpiece itself. Carol’s Oyster Stew
Sud-is-faction
P
finity Live! Philadelphia, 1100 X Pattison Ave., is hosting its second annual Xtoberfest 3 to 8 p.m.
retend this is an episode of the popular Food Network series “Chopped,” and milk, Worcestershire sauce as well as a can of oysters are in the mystery basket of must-be-included ingredients. Some contestants may stall at the stove trying to figure out the best combination for these items, but Carol Myers, of the 1300 block of Castle Avenue, would quickly start executing her Oyster Stew in hopes of pleasing the judges. Of course, when playing at home, the only thing that matters is enjoying the dish with family and friends. SPR
INGREDIENTS:
Saturday with beer gardens, Octoberfest-style foods, music, prizes and more. More than 150 beers will be available for sampling. Tickets are $35 to $55. Designated driver tickets also are available for $20 and include food and soft drinks. Free parking will be available in lots S and T. For more information, visit xnitylive.com. SPR
DIRECTIONS:
1-1/2 cups of milk 1/4 cup of flour 3 tablespoons of butter 1/2 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon of salt 1 8-ounce can of oysters
Blend the milk, flour, butter, Worcestershire sauce and salt for 30 seconds. Pour into a sauce pan and cook until smooth and thick. Stir in the oysters and heat until piping hot. Serve with oyster crackers.

Who are the Difference Makers in your community?, The people who go above and beyond to assist others? The good Samaritans who help clean the block, aid you in bringing in groceries or lend a hand in so many ways it’s hard to count? Once again, The South Philly Review will be telling their stories. They may be teachers, volunteers, coaches, doctors and any other professionals, but they also may be that helpful neighbor or the kid down the block who always shovels your walk without being asked. Find out who the difference makers are in the 2013 Fall Guide, coming October 10th.

Cafe L’Aube ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r
B
rittany is a region in northwest France that is home to simple cuisine. When Anthony Bourdain visited the area, all he wanted was a shellfish tower. Since the famous Belon oyster hails from this area, it is often the focus of this large looming feast. Lobsters, cockles, mussels, head-on shrimp and clams are piled high and served with lemon wedges. The region also has given us crepes. Buckwheat flour is used to prepare sweetand-savory crepes. I have loved these thin, tasty pancakes since childhood and was delighted to discover that Cafe L’Aube, just off Rittenhouse Square, features them. The simple menu includes crepes, sandwiches, croissants, baguettes, salads, strong coffee and assorted beverages. The French are not big on breakfast. A roll and coffee will suffice. Cafe L’Aube, has some of the finest coffee you will ever taste. The beans are roasted for the café and produce a deep, dark, rich color and flavor. It is served in oversized café au lait cups. On my first visit, I immediately got big eyes because I was not sure what type of savory crepe I wanted. The chef and I spoke in French, and he said “let me make you something special.” I sat down at a table, listened to jazz and French music softly playing on the sound system and read a magazine. I sipped my coffee ($2.50) and was in for a tasty surprise. The chef prepared a savory buckwheat crepe ($9.95) made with buttery, sautéed mushrooms and leeks. Anyone who prepares a dish with mushrooms and leeks for me has made a friend for life.

He also added thinly-sliced prosciutto and Emmentaler, which imparted a buttery, nutlike flavor. The saltiness of the ham married beautifully with the natural sweetness of the leeks while the mushrooms added a rich headiness. I wanted to sample a sandwich, specifically a croque monsieur because I have fond memories of this French version of a grilled cheese, which I loved so much with a glass of house wine in moderatelypriced bistros throughout Paris. The croque monsieur ($8.50) is lovingly prepared on oversized sandwich bread baked daily at The Art of Bread, Georges Perrier’s bakery in Narberth. It was layered with prosciutto and Emmentaler, which melted beautifully, before it met a gentle bath of crème fraîche and delicate béchamel. Once the bread soaked up these sauces, it spent time on the grill and was plated piping hot. You should eat a croque monsieur with a knife and fork. My first bite proved what a fine idea the use of béchamel was in its preparation. It imparted a slightly sweet flavor which I liked, especially when paired with the ham and cheese. I usually nap bread with butter when I make grilled cheese at home. This was a distinctly different flavor. A mound of fresh greens including red oak, romaine, frisee and spinach was served on the plate. Homemade oil and vinegar dressing was placed in a tiny cute pitcher that I poured on and enjoyed. Although Cafe L’Aube brews marvelous coffee, I wanted something cool. A bottle of San Pellegrino lemonade ($1.95) hit the spot. It was fizzy and refreshing. Cafe L’Aube serves light fare. er era, it might have been called a ladies’ lunch place. I purchased a pain au chocolate ($2.60) to go to enjoy at tea time. Later in the day, I brewed a cup of tea and tucked into the best chocolate croissant you can buy anywhere in the city. The breads and vegetables come from local purveyors, but the meats and cheeses are international and very French with a nod to Italy and Switzerland. the homemade pies, pizza pockets and pop tarts at Kermit’s Bake Shoppe, 2204 Washington Ave. While his late-grandfather sold both family restaurants before he was old enough to cook, Durkin got his start from the teachings of his relative who continued to prepare homemade pizza and pasta. “That was some of the first food I learned [to make] and now I’m doing it again,” the New Jersey native said of his new endeavor at the Point Breeze pizzeria. Durkin, who graduated from The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College and competed on its 2004 Olympic team overseas, spent time at Radnor’s Susanna Foo and Fairmount’s Waterworks before taking on wedding cakes at Exton’s Desserts International. During his time there, he met and sold goods to Adam Ritter, the owner of The Sidcar Bar & Grille, 2201 Christian St., and now Kermit’s. Also, living at 22nd and Catharine streets near the South-of-South bar, Durkin
shared his aspirations with Ritter. “Adam said when I got done with the show, [“Next Great Baker,”] we should talk, and that’s how it came about,” Durkin said. At Kermit’s, Durkin likes to provide customers with a fun and seasonal assortment, which may include pineapple upsidedown or funfetti cakes. He also likes to add twists to traditional desserts, or as he puts it, “a little signature item in each one,” like the freshly ground salted pretzels used for the crust in his Lemon Pretzel Bar.
INGREDIENTS: 2-1/2 pounds of granulated sugar 26 ounces of whole egg 12 ounces of lemon juice 1/2 ounce of lemon zest 6 ounces of all-purpose flour 18 ounces of butter 11 ounces of 10x confectioners’ sugar 4 ounces of egg yolks 3.2 ounces of milk Pinch of salt
1 pound of pastry flour 1 pound of pretzel flour
DIRECTIONS: For the lemon custard, sift the all-purpose flour and set aside. Combine the whole eggs, lemon juice and zest until smooth. Add the flour and whisk vigorously until no lumps are present. Place the filling in a non-metal container, wrap well and let set for at least 12 hours in the refrigerator. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. For the pretzel sugar crust, sift the salt and flours. In a separate bowl, combine the yolks and milk. Set both aside. Cream the butter and confectioners’ sugar until smooth and

pale. Slowly alternate making additions to the butter mixture between the sifted and liquid ingredients, until combined. Pour into a half sheet at 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick and bake until golden brown. Let the crust cool and remove the filling from the refrigerator. Skim off (do not stir) the foam from the top until the clear smooth liquid appears, Pour the liquid over the crust and bake again for about 10 minutes or until the custard is set with a controlled jiggle. SOCIAL AND OBIT
Love always, your daughters Carla and Jo-Anna
It’s so hard for me to be apart from you, even when it’s only for a short while. I’ll see something, I wish I could share with you, experience something new, and wish you could be a part of it. But I hope you know that even when we’re not together, I’m always thinking of you. During the day, you’re with me in thought, so that whenever I see something I think you’d enjoy. You’re sharing it with me. And at night, I fall asleep dreaming of how wonderful it will feel to be back in your arms. Every day that we’re apart, I’m looking forward to when we’ll be together again so I can show you how much I missed you..how much I love you.

The Philadelphia Flyers hope a revised roster can erase last season’s disappointment and place them among the league’s elite.

f the Philadelphia Flyers wish to spring into spring with the hope of ending the franchise’s nearly four-decade championship drought, they must not fall in the fall. This year’s version of the Broad Street Bullies will need a solid start to avoid duplicating last campaign’s postseason exclusion and will rely on gritty veterans and ambitious youngsters to return to prominence. After having won five playoff series the previous three years, including three in the magical run to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, the athletes had planned to make their fans feel frenzied but ended up leaving them frazzled. They needed to wait until January to wield their sticks because of the NHL’s lockout and battled injuries and inconsistency over their 48-game slate, amassing a 23-22-3 record that left them six points shy of a playoff berth. The league’s board of governors approved a realignment plan March 14, with the Flyers assigned to the new Metropolitan Division. Though that move marks novelty, they still will face the aggressive style of teams such as the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins regularly, meaning coach Peter Laviolette’s charges, who open the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St., cannot afford to try to bank on a late push as last year’s roster members did in tallying six wins in their final seven contests. Always mindful of how to keep the fan base fervent, general manager Paul Holmgren assessed the squad, which became the franchise’s second to miss the playoffs since 1994, and decided the main head that needed to roll belonged to Ilya Bryzgalov. Upon signing the goaltender to a nine-year, $51-million contract two years ago, the front office executive had envisioned the enigmatic yet talented Russian as a great complement to a strong corps of defensemen. Having helped the Anaheim Ducks to claim the Cup in 2007, Bryzgalov failed to adjust

Captain Claude Giroux averaged a point per game last season and stands nine scores away from the 100-career goal benchmark. He will center the top line with Jakub Voracek and Scott Hartnell as his wings. P h o t o P r o v i d e d b y T h e P h i l a d e l p h i a F ly e r s
to big-market scrutiny and though he put up decent statistics, he earned much of the blame for the postseason-free crusade, with the team using a compliance buyout July 25 to end his time between the pipes. Steve Mason joined the Orange and Black via an April 3 trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets and notched four victories and a 1.90 goals-against-average in seven tilts. The 25-year-old winner of the ’09 Calder Memorial Trophy for top rookie will pair with Ray Emery, who will make his second stop in South Philly. The agile netminder, who collected 16 wins for the ’09-’10 Flyers, went 17-1 for the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks and inked a one-year deal July 5. Though highly skilled, the masked men will require consistent contributions from
their defenders, who like Bryzgalov faced criticism for their play last year. Often lost in the judgments is that the unit suffered numerous injuries, with Kimmo Timonen dealing with a broken foot and Braydon Coburn and Andrej Meszaros tending to damaged shoulders, among other setbacks. Management will call on the blueliners to stall offenses but will expect them to light the lamp occasionally. To make that more likely, Holmgren acquired the rights to Mark Streit from the New York Islanders June 12 and signed the 35-year-old Swede to a fouryear deal June 28. The 6-footer served as the Islanders’ captain for two years, gaining a reputation as a capable scorer and commendable defender. He, the aforementioned skaters and peers certainly stand to prove powerful puck chasers and will
WHILE WORRIES HAVE customarily arisen among zealots regarding the defense, few have feared offensive struggles for their hockey heroes. Last year’s bunch deposited 2.75 goals-per-game, good for ninth in the league, and this season’s crop of forwards will look to blister shots past enemy keepers with impunity. Fan favorites Daniel Briere and Simon Gagne count as the biggest losses, the former electing to join the Montreal Canadiens after receiving a buyout and the latter learning last week the club could not find a role for him. Though their absence will upset many, Claude Giroux hopes to continue his maturation as the captain and make linemates Scott Hartnell and Jakub Voracek elite wings. The talented center led the team with 48 points, with Voracek beginning to show more flair and flare with a club-high 22 goals. Coming off a career-best 37-goal year in ’12, Hartnell netted eight scores in 32 games, losing a third of the campaign to a broken foot. Free-agent signee Vincent Lecavalier will likely center Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds on the second line. Also a Cup winner, the long-time Tampa Bay Lightning force will play a huge role in bettering Simmonds, whose 32 points place him third on the squad. Youth and experience will mesh on the third line, with Sean Couturier and Matt Read looking to perplex opponents, with the probable selection of Maxime Talbot as the final member of the trio. The always important fourth line also figures to affect the outcome of games, with last year’s first-round draft pick Scott Laughton to have Holmgren and Laviolette gauging his professional preparedness. With a full season of expectations and prognostications ahead, the Flyers, who have made five finals appearances since the second of two title runs in ’75, must mesh early. If not, the ice could become quite hot for Laviolette et al. SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.
