ast Passyunk Avenue’s narrow, crowded streets cause a parking war almost every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night between restaurant patrons and neighbors. “I occasionally will go to the civic associations and just sit in and listen to what’s going on,” Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corp.’s Executive Director Sam Sherman said. “Every single time that you meet with the community groups, parking is an overriding issue.” The demand for parking options in the area has been growing drastically as new See VALET PARKING page 8

T
hough his first three years at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., often filled him with sadness, Stephon Littles promotes the “It’s not how you start but how you finish” adage.
The 17-year-old has begun his senior term with brimming hope following his institution’s Sept. 6 removal from the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s persistently dangerous schools list. The news marks further progress for the Lower Moyamensing location, which had earned designation as a notorious spot since 2007.
“I know I attend a school that has had a bad reputation for some time, but I’ve always tried to do my best,” the resident of the 1500 block of South Mole Street said Friday outside his secondary site. “The reality of negative events has hit us hard, but See SOUTHERN page 10
