here is no doubt South Philly has been undergoing a dramatic revival throughout the past few years. From new businesses to a facelift in residential living, the overall area is becoming more than a place called home – it is a destination. A big thanks can go out to John Longacre, the

president and founder of Longacre Property Management Group, 1928 S. Bancroft St., who has been working to rehab Newbold for the past 10 years. From his first endeavor, the South Philadelphia Taproom, 1509 Mifflin St., to Ultimo Coffee, 1900 S. 15th St., and more, Longacre has proven that great businesses can drastically improve an otherwise struggling neighborhood. “These businesses create a buzz, and residential development starts to take place,” Longacre, who

has also been restoring old homes in the neighborhood for years, said last week. Since vacant lots are few and far between in Newbold, it’s no surprise Longacre was drawn to develop on the former grounds of the Francis M. Drexel School on 16th and Moore streets, which was demolished in 2010. Most recently, neighbors described the land as an unsolicited parking lot, See NEWBOLD LEED page 10 >>

With New Jersey’s decision to allow gay marriages, should Pennsylvania soon follow?

“Yes. It’s a civil right and nobody should be denied their civil rights in this country. All adult citizens should be treated the same way. Ken Sehres, 20th and McKean streets

“I absolutely think it should. I believe same-sex marriage should be allowed everywhere and that the nation should come to an agreement on it and not leave the matter to each state. Sarah Welsh, Third and Daly streets

Fall cleansing To the Editor: I want to publicly acknowledge and thank the officers and volunteers of the West Passyunk Neighbors Association. My street shares an alley with another street (respectively the 2200 blocks of South Beachwood and Norwood streets). Sadly, many people in the neighborhood see this area as their personal trash receptacle. Recently, the WPNA informed the residents of both blocks that they would be cleaning our alley Sept. 28. Before I went out that morning, I stood on Jackson Street, and you could not see very far down the alley as a result of all the weeds. There also was quite a bit of debris on the ground. I was dumbfounded when I arrived home about three hours later. You could actually stand on Jackson Street and see clear through to Wolf Street. I went home and into my backyard. It may sound incred-

ulous, but I was hardly able to see any dirt on the ground. All I saw was one lonely leaf. I went out there again just to look and admire it. I told my father that if I had a camera, I would actually take a photograph. It was as if somebody used a vacuum cleaner or a firehouse to wash it. I went out there to look a third time. There is an organization called the League of American Bicyclists, which gives ratings to municipalities for being bicycle friendly. Towns can receive a rating of bronze, silver, gold, platinum and now diamond. If I had to rate the job these folks did on our alley using the aforementioned rating system. I would have to create a new category: Double diamond. In the past decade, this alley has been swept about four times. One of my neighbors did it once, and I did it at least twice. Despite having

spent about four hours cleaning it one time (it took more than one day), I never achieved this level of cleanliness. I hope all of the people who have homes abutting the alley will appreciate this effort, and maintain its purity. I also hope they will consider helping these people with their various community-oriented events. William M. Piccinni South Philadelphia

Standing in support To the Editor: Kudos to Joseph Myers for a close look at how Gov. Tom Corbett’s threatened withholding of funding could affect a local, high performing school (“Leveling with them, Oct. 17). The school community was absolutely right to protest the possible removal of a teacher with the consequence of split grades in many classrooms. I recall the frustration of teaching two different grades at the same time. And that was before highstakes testing! Our union fought to end this outrageous practice. In the article and its inside photo, I was delighted to recognize the name and face of a former bril-

South PhillyReview liant student from John H. Taggart School, Jennifer McCloskey Miller. Jennifer, I am so proud of you for standing up for your children’s education. If we are ever to restore any sanity to public education, it will be parents like you who help make it happen. Well done. Gloria C. Alex, you truly AMAZE me (“Birdie watching, Oct. 17)! Your courage, your strength, everything you have ever dreamed of and wanted, you did it !!! Continue your list because you will have a long life of great things to accomplish! I love you, and I’m so proud to be your Mom! You’re the greatest gift GOD can give, and you’re all mine. — Deann via southphillyreview.com

Please do some reviews of Point Breeze restaurants (“Cheu Noodle Bar, Oct. 17). Are you prejudiced against the people who live there? — Jermaine via southphillyreview.com

Jermaine, it seems that she is prejudiced to reviewing restaurants in South Philly at all, even though the paper she is writing for is the SOUTH PHILLY Review (“Cheu Noodle Bar, Oct. 17). Maybe you could tell me, what are some good restaurants in Point Breeze that you could recommend?

“I think so because we already have freedom of speech, so why can’t we have freedom in deciding who we should marry? Gia Fuscellaro, 1900 block of South Camac Street

— Ang via southphillyreview.com

Dear Jermaine & Ang: I have reviewed American Sardine Bar and South Philadelphia Tap Room (“Cheu Noodle Bar, Oct. 17). I enjoyed both of them very much especially South Philadelphia Tap Room. I have returned several times just to enjoy the fine food and drink.

“Definitely because we live in a free country, and as long as you’re not bothering anyone, what’s the problem? Charles Taylor, Sixth and Morris streets

uthorities met the complainant at 12:36 a.m. Oct. 17 on the 1900 block of Passyunk Avenue, observing blood profusely emanating from the back of his head, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man stated he and a friend were inside a residence when the offender reportedly asked him for money. Meeting refusal, the intruder allegedly pulled a knife and threatened to kill the denying party. A struggle caused the knife to hit the floor, with the offender purportedly striking the victim twice in the head and several times in the upper torso with a two-pound weight. The complainant lost his cell phone to the supposed attacker, whom he said ran out the front door, Tolliver said. The older adult thought the figure might be in the Ritner-and-South-Carlisle-streets area, so police surveyed the stretch and observed a white male walking eastbound with blood adorning his face, neck and hands. After authorities stopped him for investigation, the complainant identified the man as his attacker, with police, who retrieved the complainant’s cell phone, arresting 33-year-old Keith Buce, of the 2300 block of South Carlisle Street, and charging him with possession of an instrument of crime, theft, robbery, making terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and assault. He awaits an Oct. 31 preliminary hearing.

Unconscious effort A spat over a vehicle’s speed led to a stadium complex area altercation Sunday. The male complainant reported he and his girlfriend left Xfinity Live! Philadelphia, 1100 Pattison Ave., at 9:55 p.m. and walked to their car in a lot at Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. As they approached their ride, a black pickup truck, which they described as having a silver tool chest in the cab, zoomed by and nearly struck the complainant, whose mate joined him in arguing with the car’s motorist about his speed. When the offended male tried to photograph the vehicle with his cell phone, three men exited and repeatedly punched and kicked him, resulting in a loss of consciousness, with his partner sustaining nonspecified injuries, Tolliver said. The figures fled the scene in their vehicle.

The two described the attackers as white males, in their mid-20s and with medium builds. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Suddenly silenced Two phone-hungry attackers robbed a boy and left him injured in Point Breeze Saturday. The youth reported that at 12:30 p.m., he had two unknown males approach him from behind on the 1100 block of South Cleveland St., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The first stranger delivered a punch to his mouth then covered it so his victim could not scream. After twice asking “Where’s your phone at?”, the first figure went into his prey’s pants pocket and copped a black T-Mobile Galaxy cell phone before he and his accomplice fled westbound on Federal Street toward 17th street, Tolliver said. The youngster described the lead thief as black, 18 years old, 5-foot-8, having a dark brown complexion and wearing a gray hoodie. He said the second was also black, 22 years old, 6-foot-1, having the same complexion and a nappy beard and wearing a blue hoodie and the same color jeans. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Property pilfered An encounter with an aggressive group of Asians cost a male his phone and cash in Girard Estate Saturday. While walking along the 1800 block of Ritner Street at 12:30 a.m., the complainant had as many as seven unknown male figures approach him, with the first pulling his hood over his head and instructing him to remain quiet, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A second stranger pointed a gun at the man, with another kicking him in the head after pushing him to the ground. Another party scoped his pockets and scored his wallet, containing $100 and identification, and a black-and-red Verizon Pantech cell phone. The complainant reported no injuries, though, Tolliver said. He described the first foreigner as 18 to 20 years old, having a dark complexion and wearing dark clothing. The second was also 18 to 20 years old and dark complected; 5-foot-9, 170 pounds and having

Minivan madness

Morning misery A gun-wielding attacker committed a Monday morning robbery in Marconi East. The female complainant reported that shortly before 6:10 a.m., she was walking along the 700 block of Johnston Street when she saw an unknown male standing at Marshall and Johnston streets, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Motioning for her to come over to him, he pointed a black gun at her to demand her handbag. The sought-after item contained identification, keys and $30, with the thief also confiscating her Samsung Galaxy cell phone before delivering a fall-producing slap to her head. While on the ground, she received instructions to run from the scene, Tolliver said. She sustained minor pain to her head but did not require medical treatment. She described the offender as black, in his mid-20s and 6 foot; having a thin build, sparse facial hair; and wearing dark blue jeans, a green hoody and black boots. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Student robbed An elementary school pupil received an unwanted lesson Monday in West Passyunk. Walking along the 2000 block of South 19th Street at 7:51 a.m., the boy and a witness observed two unknown males, with one asking the time, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. After giving it, the learners continued along 19th Street until the first offender grabbed the victim’s arm from behind and demanded “Give me the phone, or I will kill you,” also claiming to have a gun. Going into the teenager’s pocket, the assailant grabbed an iPhone 4S before he and his accomplice fled on foot. The victim and his peer, who said they saw no gun, described the first figure as black, 19 to 21 years old, 5-foot-11 and light-skinned; and wearing a black jacket and light blue jeans; and the second only as a black male wearing a black hoody. An attacker used a metal rod to pull off a Whitman-based robbery Oct. 18. Walking along the 2100 block of South Fourth Street at 10:52 p.m., the complainant crossed Winton Street when an offender wielded the weapon to deliver a from-behind blow to his head, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Falling to the ground after receiving numerous punches to his head, the victim suffered another blow from the rod and more punches. The unknown male rummaged through his pockets, taking $400 before fleeing westbound along Winton Street, Tolliver said. Experiencing bleeding, swelling and head pain, the complainant received a transport to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Tolliver said. He described the aggressor as black, 18 to 25 years old, 5-foot-10, 150 pounds, with a thin build, round face, light facial hair; wearing a dark green hoody and black jeans and possibly being nicknamed “Drizzel.” To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

A medium for all A Lower Moyamensing inhabitant is planning to make headway on the airwaves. ■ By Lauren Hertzler Review Contributor

F

or many recent immigrants in South Philly, being able to acquire the news in their native language is a difcult, yet very necessary, task. Chris Randolph, of 11th and Shunk streets, is hoping to bridge that barrier through the South Philadelphia Community Radio, a new project he started for the area. The multilingual radio station will offer programming for everybody living in South Philadelphia. Cultural centers, civic associations and community organizations alike have expressed interest in underwriting and hosting shows, some in different languages. It will also give an outlet for local musicians to broadcast their work to a large audience, and possibly even provide an opportunity for high school students to get on-air experience. Since June, the radio station has had nonprofit 501(c)(3) status, thanks to its 31-yearold incubator and fiscal sponsor New Beginnings within the Philly-based Resources for Human Development organization. And because of a Federal Communications Commission decision to allow urban low-powered licenses for small organizations two years ago, the startup community station was able to apply for a license this week. “Since the ’90s, there’s been a movement in the U.S. to push the FCC and federal government to allow community groups to apply for small licenses called micro broadcasting,” Randolph said. “But for a while, larger stations, including National Public Radio, lobbied hard against it, fearing that the new small stations would interfere, taking their audience away.” In 2011, the Lower Moyamensing resident said, the federal government forced the FCC to allow urban low-powered licenses, which can operate only at a maximum power of 100 watts, enough to cover nearly a 3.5-mile radius, and this past spring the FCC announced it would open up an application process for interested participants Oct. 15. Because of the government shutdown, the process experienced a delay, but that didn’t discourage South Philadelphia Community Radio. “In our case, the shutdown didn’t really matter,” Randolph, the station’s managing director, said. “We were prepared.” RHD put up the money for the application fee and also for a broadcast engineer, who has been helping fill out the forms mandated by the FCC.

“Which is very generous on their part and more than I asked for,” Randolph said, adding that RHD was “thrilled” not only to be an incubator of the project but also the licenser. The non-commercial station’s goal is to be up and running on its own within three or four years. “Then we’d leave the RHD nest,” Randolph said. But, he noted, the radio station won’t be able to happen without the community’s financial support. South Philadelphia Community Radio is asking for $21,000 in donations to help pay for studio equipment and other startup necessities. It kicked off its fundraising campaign Oct. 15 at Marconi Plaza, 2700 S. Broad St., through Indiegogo, igg.me/ at/southphilly, and had managed to muster $195 as of press time. “Community radio is a cheap project,” Randolph said. “It would be a tremendous black eye and a shame for the community if it’s something we cannot fund. The expenses here are minimal.” HE ADDED THAT many people are sharing information about the radio station on social media, and expressing excitement for the possibility of it, but not contributing financially.

“People have enjoyed forwarding it on the expectation that someone else is going to fund it,” Randolph said. “What really needs to happen to the 11,000 people who looked at our post on Facebook is they have to step up and actually give us some money.” Trish Biedron, RHD’s New Beginnings director, said she’s really excited about the mission of the program, and said if funding doesn’t come in, RHD is still going to support the station. “We will work with them and try to get the funding,” Biedron, who’s been with New Beginnings for two years, said. “But we’re trying not to look at it that way. Ultimately, we’re just going to keep the mindset positive.” Randolph said he waited until he had established a concrete plan before asking for donations. So far, he’s made an arrangement to have studio space at the Bhutanese Community Center, 2526 S. Seventh St. He has also asked the Methodist branch of Jefferson University Hospital, 2301 S. Broad St., if the community radio station could host its antenna on the building’s roof. “The hospital was extremely positive,” Randolph said, adding that it’s also interested in promoting health initiatives and messages through the radio station, especially in different languages. “They were

enthusiastic to be involved.” But just because South Philadelphia Community Radio applied for a license, doesn’t mean it will get one. The FCC can award up to three licenses in the region. And although he did not wish to delve into the topic too much, Randolph, whose fundraising campaign has seven weeks remaining, said he does have a backup plan to run the station no matter what happens. And that’s a good thing, Aldo Siahaan said. The resident of 13th Street and Snyder Avenue said the radio station would be extremely beneficial for the community, especially for first generation immigrants who might not speak English very well. Siahaan, a pastor and Indonesian community leader, said right now most Indonesian immigrants rely on the Internet or a bulletin he sends out for news. But, he noted, “not all of them have Internet access.” A radio station would be more beneficial because of its accessibility, he noted, adding that it’s an inexpensive medium. And, Randolph said, “Everyone knows how to use a radio.” SPR

covered in dirt, but luckily for the neighborhood, Longacre’s anticipated homedevelopment project, reNewbold, finally broke ground after five years of planning. “This has been an area of blight on this plot of land...so today is truly a celebration,” 2nd District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson said at reNewbold’s ceremonial groundbreaking Oct. 16. “Today represents for me, not only part of why I believe in a vision for Philadelphia, but more importantly a vision for a stronger South Philadelphia.” The new townhouse development, designed by Fishtown-based Postgreen Homes and Kensington-situated Interface Studio Architects, is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum project in South Philly below Washington Avenue, said Chad Ludeman, the president of Postgreen. The project will include 16 rowhomes, two condominiums and one retail space, all built three times more efficiently than the standard code. Ludeman, who often works in the Kensington and Fishtown areas, said he pitched several concepts on the design to Longacre two years ago. “We looked at apartment or condo building on part of it, but we settled on this because there are a ton of two-story working class homes in the area, and we wanted to get that back into the mix,” Ludeman said. The development, however, did not come without complications. Ludeman revealed they were off to a rocky start — not in designing but in building — because of “complications with the previous owner, issues in demolishing the old property and back taxes.” “So it was really just cleaning all that up that took so much time,” Ludeman said, adding that Longacre and his reNewbold partner Joel Luber were the sole handlers of all the nitty-gritty issues. Luber, also Longacre’s attorney for more than 15 years, noted the best part of the project is effectively having an entire city block to build on. “Instead of building one house, we’re going to build 18 houses,” he said. “So that will create such a wonderful improvement to the whole neighborhood. You can’t help but increase the values of all the homes around here.” Luber, who wished not to disclose the cost of the project, said they’re aiming to have the project finished within 18 months, but the sooner the better, especially for Nick Fama and Chinda Rann, who purchased a space in reNewbold last April. “We were getting worried for a while, we weren’t sure when it was going to take off,” Fama said. But Ludeman, listening closely, said

The excited overseers and stakeholders of the reNewbold project expect the brainchild to increase the aesthetic identity and economic security of the neighborhood. Completion of elements of it could occur within the next six months. P h o t o P r o v i d e d b y L e va n a L ay e n d e c k e r

he’s hoping to have their three-bedroom rowhome finished and ready for move-in within six months. Fama, a native of South Philly and current resident of New Jersey, chose reNewbold because of the “whole revitalization of the neighborhood.” “I still have family in the East Passyunk area, and that area is really hoppin’ now,” he said, admitting that an added bonus is the free parking spot that the develop-

this happens.” Robert Marino, the president of the Delaware Valley Region of Valley Green Bank, said reNewbold is an “exciting venture for me professionally and personally,” as he grew up about four blocks from the new development. The reNewbold project has been well-received by the long-time neighbors of the area, including sisters Diana Martino, of Hicks and Moore streets, and Phyllis Mariani, of Mole and Moore streets, who rave over Longacre’s contributions to their community. “He made our neighborhood go up,” Mariani said. “This neighborhood was pretty bad for a while, but he made a big change.” Mariani and Martino confided they are anxious to find out what retail store will be included in reNewbold. “You’re going to absolutely love it,” Longacre told the sisters. “I’m not telling you the store, but I promise you’re going to love it.” As for Nghiem Nguyen, a 40-year resident of the 1800 block of South Bancroft Street, which rests directly across from the new development, his only concern is the bother of living next to a construction site for the next year or so. Besides that, he said, “The new space will be nice to keep the area clean, and it’ll be safer than before.” SPR

C Newbold siblings are marking another year of providing Halloween hijinks. ■ By Joseph Myers

ourtesy of their seamstress mother’s endeavors, Jake and Kara Christiansen always donned well-received Halloween costumes while maturing in Puerto Rico. Still fascinated with deeming disguises as aids in fostering fun and fear, the siblings are again serving as laugh- and scream-inducing performers for Terror Behind the Walls, the Eastern State Penitentiary’s much-lauded seasonal celebration. “It’s as if we’re kids all over again but in a professional way,” Kara, 27, said of a recurring benet of participating. “There’s an exchange of energy that always makes the interactions exciting.” She and her 29-year-old brother live with four more haunters on the 1600 block of Wharton Street, forging an extended family of fright fomenters who infuse fall with their desire to satisfy scare seekers. For the Christiansens, employment at the historic prison also yields a two-month period to strengthen their communal integration and self-awareness. “Through it, something has come out that we didn’t even know we had,” Kara said of their six-year tenure at the famed Fairmount spot. “It’s great to

share our enthusiasm with crowds and to learn about ourselves.”

LIFESTYLES there to provide that service, and we do it very well.” The relatives have had novelty injected into their scream schemes, as visitors can elect to have the actors’ longstanding notouching-the-patrons policy waived and engage in separate adventures with the hires. Not wanting to spoil the details of the alternate experiences, Kara could confess she and her peers have garnered positive feedback from the switch. Group attendance also thrills her and Jake, especially when they can use their Spanish mastery to haunt guests in their mother tongue. “Participants remember us, too,” Kara said. “It’s all in line with the fact that you can’t underestimate the need to connect with people, even when, or maybe especially when, you’re looking to shock them.” BORN IN ILLINOIS, the Christiansens spent most of their formative years in Puerto Rico, with stints in Minnesota and California also broadening their worldview. Describing her move to Philadelphia eight years ago as “a whim,” Kara began to further her interest in jewelry, eventually morphing into a successful selfemployed maven. Finding the metropolis exhilarating, she encouraged her kinsman to flock to the City of Brotherly Love, a

CATCH, Inc will be hosting Depression Screenings on:

Seeing precise gestures as the causes of most scares, they admire guests’ willingness to let down their guard and tremble via their often-improvised actions. They generate more joy when their brother Myron, 32, comes from Puerto Rico over the final two weeks of the run to assist with the most bustling part of the Terror Behind the Walls slate. “That’s always great because we can hang out with him as he takes a scare vacation,” Kara said of intensifying her family’s affair with fear. Being a key presence in the action has inspired the female member of the sibling duo, who calls herself a “part-time horror actress.” With a role in the genre-specific “Flowers,” a Philadelphia-shot movie set to wrap by December, she noted that any time is a good one for unnerving someone, though she and Jake find it thrilling that their most consistent chores come during their favorite time of year. “There’s a great sense of community among us,” the latter said. “Come let us be your creators of a terrifying evening.” SPR

move that brought them to the 2200 block of Mifflin Street, with their current location housing them for nearly a year. “It’s been awesome since then,” Jake said of his receptivity to South Philly, which he estimates 50 Terror Behind the Walls figures call home. “Everything seems convenient to reach, and there’s a real sense of family here.” Through their vocations, which for Jake also included a stint with Bilenky Cycle Works, the two have seen acting as an interesting diversion, with Kara, who recalled a few Puerto Rico-based theatrical duties, the more enthused initially, though her brother’s interest now rivals hers. “I believed I could be loud and fit the role of someone looking to scare others,” Jake said of his progression through the Terror Behind the Walls ranks, with his current character “spewing insanities at everyone who walks by.” “It’s excellent to have this opportunity, especially with Kara.” Though the siblings, who for three years worked together on the attraction’s Street Team, have not striven for distinction as consummate acting professionals, they have mastered one priceless component of executing their charges, timing.

“We weren’t the type who shamelessly looked for attention as kids,” Jake added. “With these roles, we’re having a great time getting them worked up and in the spirit while also being able to reflect back on how much we liked this time of year as children.” Familiarity with Terror Behind the Walls began seven years ago mostly through word of mouth at Epic Adventurez, an interactive theater camp to which the siblings contribute. Enthusiastic upon gathering more knowledge, they set out to raise heart rates no matter what their roles, with Jake especially cognizant of the value of each assignment. “Regardless of our location, it’s how we apply ourselves that makes the experience genuine,” the 2011 Terror Behind the Walls Actor of the Year, who is playing Phil, a crazed Gauntlet-situated inmate, said. “For me, the best part has to be the moment when someone’s scream turns into a laugh because we’re tapping into a wide range of emotions.” “We’ve definitely evolved in our appreciation for the opportunity,” Kara, the ’08 Actress of the Year and zone manager of the Night Watch section, added. “It’s just so much fun to get to develop our characters. Michelina (Thoughts while waiting for the Obamacare website to come up)

I

f ignorance is bliss, there must be an awful lot of happy Americans out there. The Bible is wrong. It is not the meek who will inherit the earth because the ignorant have already beaten them to it. Yes, I know more Americans today are college educated than when I was a callow youth, but then watch Jay Leno on a given night when he interviews a trio of campus morons who believe that Abraham Lincoln was a wartime president — World War II. There would be no Ted Cruz in the United States Senate if the favorite game in Texas weren’t It Pays To Be Ignorant. Cruz is the Don Quixote of the Tea Party. He dreams the Impossible Dream of defunding the Affordable Care Act, and defeat hasn’t deterred him. In point of fact, the only real people who have the power to destroy Obamacare are the ones who set up the website. My grandkids could have done a better job and would have included a feature that would have allowed customers to play Xbox 360 while choosing an insurance plan. The government just avoided default by raising the debt ceiling, which allows us to pay for money that Congress has already authorized. That’s right, pay for money already authorized. It’s like you spent a lot of money using your credit card and now here’s the bill. You don’t like paying it, but it’s pay or have the credit card company turn you into financial a eunuch (ouch!!). The debt ceiling is not something you notice when you get bored during sex (“Sam, the debt ceiling needs painting”). The need to raise the debt ceiling is not something our “Kenyan” president invented. Under our Obama, the debt ceiling has been raised six times while under Saint Ronald Reagan, the debt ceiling was raised 18 times. The better question is why do need a debt ceiling anyway? Why not do away with a debt ceiling? If we did away with it today, that would be a good thing — think of it as being one fewer opportunity for Michele Bachmann to speak. There is only one other country in the world that has a debt ceiling, Denmark, and you know how depressed the Danes are all the time. Before the financial crisis was temporarily resolved last week, pundits, such as New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, were suggesting that what President

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

Obama had to do was, in the vernacular of the street, “grow a pair.” Dowd has been an unhappy woman because she has found our last three presidents wanting — Obama because he lacks cojones, Bush 43 because he lacks a brain, and Clinton, well Clinton has a brain, but apparently Maureen located it in Bill’s genital area. Anyway, Dowd wanted Obama to lock the key leaders of Congress in a room and not let them out until they agreed to reopen the government and raise the debt limit. But it wasn’t a lockdown that got the House Republicans to cave; it was a stare down by Obama. We Italians know the power of the stare down only we call it the “evil eye” or “malocchio.” Unknown to the rest of you, the president called my Uncle Nunzio on the hot line to seek advice. Uncle told Barack to send for Michelina. Even the National Security Agency doesn’t know about Michelina, who is reputed to be 102 years old with a wart with tiny dark hairs sprouting out of her upper lip. Michelina is the foremost practitioner of the evil eye (after staring down the manager of a supermarket, she once caused the entire chain to go out of business because they refused to carry De Cecco pasta). There is a report that John Boehner’s tan faded after looking into the right eye of Michelina. The president is considering using Michelina during talks with Iran in the near future. Because of Michelina, Uncle Nunzio has gained favor with our president. He visited the White House recently to chat over lunch with Mr. Obama. I understand Obama has now given up beer in favor of Uncle’s homemade wine. Uncle intentionally stayed away from politics during their lunchtime conversations, preferring to philosophize about subjects such as why the sales women behind the Clinique counter always wear white coats. I was surprised Uncle noticed that kind of thing, but he apparently told one such salesperson to stop showing off. After all she is just a saleswoman trying to find the right shade of makeup for her customer, not cure cancer. Uncle also found out the president is a hockey fan (Note: even Obama addresses Ed Snider as “Mister” and also worries about whether the Flyers will ever score more than three goals in a game again). He had no comment when Uncle said that the best case for birth control is Britney Spears wanting more kids. Uncle reports that the president is rooting for Snookie on “Dancing with the Stars.” Obama told him he only pretends to like kale because it pleases Michelle, who grows an awful lot of kale in her White House victory garden. I don’t believe any of Uncle’s chitchat with the president. But what I do believe is that we have finally found the answer to the Tea Party — Michelina. Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) endures a significant alteration to his identity as a 19th-century violinist sold into slavery.

Eye-opening memoir ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

T

his year will go down in history as one that marked a vital leap forward for black cinema, with multiple portraits of the black experience uniquely and unflinchingly crafted by black directors. The film that ostensibly stands at the front is the fact-based “12 Years a Slave,” a blistering snapshot of American slavery from British filmmaker Steve McQueen. Adapted from the memoir of Solomon Northup, a free New Yorker who was tricked, stripped from his family and sold as a slave in the south, the supposed Oscar front-runner is as brutal as anyone’s heard, never batting an eyelash when it comes to illustrating the great horrors of our nation’s stained past. The sometimes tear-inducing brutality is unquestionably justified. There are sequences in this film, such as one nightmarish whipping, that may never leave one’s memory, and that’s precisely the point: This oft-glazed over shame of America’s background should be regarded, as McQueen has observed, with as much “never forget” shock and distress as the Holocaust. And it helps that the director has cast his film impeccably. Chiwetel Ejiofor gives his nuanced all as Northup, Michael Fassbender is monstrous and pitiful as a slave owner and actresses Lupita Nyong’o and Adepero Oduye are both astounding as fellow slaves whom Northup encounters. The trouble with the movie is McQueen is such a self-consciously artsy director that he lets his formal approach obstruct the message he’s trying to send. Too often, amid absurdly long takes or over-emphasized aural choices, it feels as though viewers aren’t just enduring the horrors of

slavery, but the arduousness of McQueen’s forced technique. Many shots are among 2013’s best, but there are plenty more that could have been considerably trimmed, leaving room for deeper exploration of Solomon’s soul and the effect of his experience. How do these atrocities change a man who survives them? And what are the emotional, human specifics of what he lost in the process? McQueen’s at-arm’s-length predilections never truly let one know.

An inventive vampire film that helps to reclaim the genre from Twi-Hards, Neil Jordan’s lush and eerie “Byzantium” focuses on a mother and daughter (Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan), who’ve lived through the ages as immortals, one fine with bloodletting, the other haunted by her plight. Distinct in its setting (which features plasma waterfalls) and its biology (these vamps have sharp nails, not teeth), the film is the perfect art-house pick for Halloween season. For Great Cancer Care, There’s No Place Like Home.

You’d go a long way to find the best cancer care. But it’s nicer when you don’t have to. Jefferson’s Methodist Hospital in South Philadelphia offers a rare combination: the renowned cancer specialists of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson – backed by leading-edge technology and clinical trial options – with a close-to-home feel that allows cancer patients to remain in their comfort zone. It’s hard to match the quality of the cancer specialists who have helped to make Jefferson a National Cancer Institute-designated center. But when those doctors are located right in your neighborhood, that’s even more exceptional.

Dante’s Macaroni and Cheese

Spirited specials

M

acoroni and Cheese is typically one of those don’t-feel-like-cooking options that doesn’t require prep work. Unlike many, Dante Candelora puts a lot of thought and effort into his version by blending together a mixture of five different cheeses followed by an extended baking. The resident of the 2300 block of South 11th Street also encourages his fellow mac-and-cheese lovers to adjust the mixture to their liking, such as using smoked cheddar to create a bacon-like taste. No matter what cheeses are chosen, this recipe is sure to satisfy that classic American craving. SPR

INGREDIENTS:

B

DIRECTIONS:

1 box of elbow macaroni, cooked according to package directions 8 ounces each of shredded Monterey Jack, Colby, extra sharp cheddar, mild cheddar and Muenster cheeses 1/2 pint of heavy cream 1 can of evaporated milk 2 Eggs, slightly beaten 1 stick of butter, softened Salt, pepper and paprika, to taste

Preheat oven to 350. Lightly butter a 13-by-9-inch pan. Place the pan on a larger cookie sheet to prevent juices from dripping onto bottom of oven and burning. Strain and return the cooked macoroni to pot. Stir in the cheeses. Add the butter. Stir in eggs, heavy cream and evaporated milk. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Spread the mixture in the prepared pan. Sprinkle with the paprika. Bake for 30 minutes covered with foil. Remove the foil, and bake for an additional 30 minutes. Serrano ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

I

enjoyed my first meal at Serrano during a Book and the Cook dinner more than 25 years ago. It was hosted by the late Elisabeth Rozin, a food writer and educator, who planned a marvelous international menu: Martinis laced with saffron, African peanut chicken soup, Indonesian cucumber salad, cassoulet and vanilla ice cream with chili ginger sauce. Although I have made repeat visits to Serrano, I never reviewed it. The original owners sold the restaurant. The kitchen is now under the guidance of executive chef Gina Rodriguez. Located in Old City on Second Street’s restaurant row, Serrano is a long, narrow space with original brick walls, soft lighting, a friendly bar with a top bartender and a menu that reflects Rodriguez’s culinary imprint. It’s a mix of Asian, American and Mexican fare. I sipped the finest Rob Roy ($12) to date while Edward went local with a Bluecoat martini ($10.75) Cocktail prices were about as modest as one can get. Dinner began with corn fritters ($5) and crispy pork wonton ($10). The fritters were round, golf-ball size fried dough with a hint of ground corn sitting in a small bowl, with a dollop of honey on the bottom. They arrived cold, so a fresh order was prepared. The second dish was OK, but I assume this was Rodriguez’s interpretation of fritters. The wonton appetizer, which was cold and disappointing, consisted of three small, fluted bland pastry shells with tiny bits of pork that were so salty I could not eat it. We had a few questions about the entrees on offer, and I had to pull out my portable flashlight to read the menu. The meatloaf didn’t sound particularly appetizing to us because of the piled on mashed potatoes and other ingredients, but we were assured they would arrive in separate compartments. Rodriguez’s meatloaf ($19.50) was prepared with chopped bacon that imparted a tasty addition to ground beef. It had a terrific texture, like pâté, which I liked, but it could have been hotter. The garlic mashed potatoes were creamy, and the addition of garlic was a fine idea. Alas, they could have been hotter as well. Shoestring fried onions were yummy and crisp, free of grease and seasoned just right. A side dish of hot baby carrots contained the right bit of crunch. Our waiter told us the scallop dish ($25) was the chef’s signature creation, and after a detailed explanation, I decided to try it. First, I do not like food served in a large, shallow bowl unless it is soup or some type of pasta. I assumed large, dry scallops would appear in the bowl, but I received about four small-sized ones. The were seared nicely but could have been hotter. The scallops were placed around a mix of mushrooms, fingerling potatoes and sausage slices. They vegetables and sausages were chunky, and I thought had a hash been prepared, it would have imparted a better flavor and texture to the final dish. All the ingredients sat in a pool of chili oil, which added a little kick. Edward asked the bartender to recommend a glass of beer. A Harpoon’s Winter Warmer ($6) was the perfect choice for the meatloaf, and I sipped a glass of New Restaurant Review:

Zealand Sauvignon Blanc ($9). Service was a bit spotty. We waited about 30 minutes for our appetizers, but it became better as the rhythm for our dinner developed. Although drink prices were very modest, I thought the price of entrees at Serrano’s was a bit too high. The food lacked the vibrancy I remembered, but every chef brings his or her interpretation and ideas to the bill of fare. = Very Good

Chhaya Café’s Pumpkin Waffles

Chef Vernana “V” Beuria

Chhaya Café Owner: Vernana “V” Beuria Opened August 2010 1823 E. Passyunk Ave. 215-465-1000 chhayacafe.com

The 34-year-old resident of Seventh and Reed streets attended the University of Pennsylvania to major in economics, and even took a financial consulting job out of college. There was only one problem: She hated it. Instead of suffering through a career of misery, she decided it was time to try something else and enrolled in The Restaurant School, which paved the way for positions at the Marathon Grill and the Urban Outfitters cafeteria in The Philadelphia Navy Yard. However, Beuria’s goal was to start her own business, with a waffle truck being her original idea. That was before she discovered an available piece of property at 1823 E. Passyunk Ave. In August 2010, Chhaya Café opened its doors. “I walked by this space, and it was just perfect,” she said of the quaint 28-seat establishment that serves a variety of coffee and waffles, along with other breakfast and lunch items.

The East Passyunk Crossing spot offers a weekend brunch menu as well. The chef/owner keeps things fresh by adjusting the menu with seasonal ingredients. She is currently featuring a popular Halloween-themed ingredient in her Pumpkin Waffle. “When we first opened in August 2010, one of the first things people came in and asked for was the pumpkin spice latte,” she said. “There was such a demand for it that we decided to come up with something for the fall.”

Stocked with cards, candy, and collectables the store “popped.” The holidays were my parents favorite time. At Christmas they would decorate the store which became the neighborhood showpiece. In the early years the store was a big part of my life. After school I’d walk in, eat dinner, and start my homework. Then, down to the store to help mom and dad. What a great team. In the Early 90’s my dad became ill and in 1995 he passed away. The Mike and Marie team was down to one. My mother had a difficult decision to make, move on or run the store on her own. For the past 19 years she ran the card store alone, never losing the excitement whether wrapping a gift or picking an Italian card. Mom never lost her enthusiasm. The decision to close the store was hard to make. Packing up her inventory and locking the door for the last time was bittersweet. I will miss the Card and Gift Gallery very much since it was a part of me. Yes, The, “Card Store on Broad Street” will be missed but as the expression says, “All good things must come to an end.” I wish my mother a wonderful and restful retirement. I am proud of her and hope she achieves the same joy in the future.

Unbridled excitement A former Grays Ferry resident and a Bella Vista-school graduate will head west for a polo competition.

postsecondary facility to the U.S. Polo Association’s National Intercollegiate Championships final, said of his participation, which until recently had him mounting with 18-year-old brother Daymar, the fifth member of their family to help Hiner. “I’ve had many memorable experiences, and with another chance at gaining renown, we’re up for the task of taking on a great team.” Work to Ride will compete as the U.S. High School entrant based on its having captured the ’11 and ’12 National Interscholastic Polo Championships and will face its lauded opponent in Nov. 2’s first match. With a tremendous track record that includes the ’05 Eastern Regional Interscholastic Polo Tournament crown, an ’03 HBO “Real Sports” profile, distinction in ’99 as the first African-American polo team in the nation and a ’94 Sports Illus-

trated piece, Work to Ride aims to provide spectators with added appreciation for the relationship between animals and humans, with the decision to have notable young mounters face one another destined to make onlookers excited about the sport’s possibilities. “Pitting high school versus college champions is interesting from a sporting perspective,” spokesman Mike Saucier said. “Not only that, it’s polo upstarts versus the most storied program in college polo.” MINDFUL OF THEIR overall growth, Rosser and Rease have hit ages where they regularly contemplate how much longer they can continue as competitors. Regardless of the number of goals he scores or prevents, the latter individual credits polo for intensifying his self-belief and gratitude. “Growing up in West and North Philly, I

encountered many people who had no idea what they wanted to do with their lives and others who locked themselves into only a few options,” the 18-year-old freshman at the Rhode Island-situated Roger Williams University said. “I knew that if I could apply myself, I could see what I could become.” The North Philly denizen learned of Work to Ride through Daymar Rosser, making polo the first sport from which he derived more than recreational enjoyment. Joining at 10, Rease came to view the Rossers as brothers, with Daymar, a senior at Valley Forge Military Academy, Kareem’s alma mater, being especially close to him. The team has received much press for being minorities succeeding in a sport that features few non-Caucasian Americans, but neither Rease nor Kareem continued on next page »

eeming polo his “passport to the world,” Kareem Rosser has seen his commitment to becoming an accomplished competitor yield journeys to Asia and Africa. While international travel has proven enlightening, the ex-Grays Ferry dweller also enjoys treks throughout America to tout the “sport of kings” and will revel in another trip Nov. 1 to 2 when he captains the Work to Ride squad at the Scottsdale Ferrari-Maserati Polo Championships. “I love being an ambassador for the game and my team, especially,” the 20-year-old, who has promoted each for more than half his life, said Friday from Colorado State University, where he is a junior business major. “It’s great to have such a large upcoming occasion to be a contributing voice.” The third edition of America’s largest polo event will find Rosser, who spent roughly four years residing on Taney and Tasker streets, and three other athletes, including Brandon Rease, a recent graduate of The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., venturing to Arizona to face the NCAA champion University of Virginia Cavaliers. Having made their tournament debut last year by downing Harvard University, the Work to Ride roster members will look for another profile-building victory, but no matter the outcome, they will strengthen their bonds with one another and their mammal mates. Such unions have come through their interaction with program founder and coach Lezlie Hiner. The executive director devised the initiative in 1994, seeing forging connections with horses as a character-building endeavor for 7- to 19-year-olds, who receive free instruction in horse sports, with polo drawing the biggest response, in exchange for maintenance of the animals and their quarters. Centered at Fairmount Park’s Chamounix Equestrian Center, the brainchild has consistently produced enrollees bent on maturing and enduring as winners. “I thought it would be a great way to grow, make connections and network,” Rosser, the 2011 Polo Training Foundation Male Interscholastic Polo Player of the Year, who in the spring guided his

Polo’s been a great way to come to know myself better.” In looking for more self-awareness, the two figures, who will gallop with sisters Shariah and Sheree Harris in serving as the more experienced riders for Hiner, have concluded polo has crafted social and cultural immersion opportunities that might not have come if they had taken up another sport or refrained from athletics entirely. Knowing the difficulty of devising a professional existence as a polo player, each is keeping his options open, with Rease, who tabbed himself the equiv-
