eandering around people and stands stacked with fruit and produce along South Ninth Street is typical for South Philadelphians. Known as America’s oldest and largest outdoor market, the South Ninth Street Italian Market has become synonymous for being a one-stop shop with recognized stores selling everything from poultry, meats, cheeses, coffee and spices to trinkets and souvenirs. But not until recently was there a single place where neighbors, tourists and merchants alike could go for information or See VISITOR CENTER page 8

The new ride will couple with a Center City-based express service to facilitate employees’

Feeding hope for the future To the Editor: We volunteer at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1332 S. Third St., which has many outreach programs and provides food to the needy. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, anyone who is in need may go there and receive what they have to share. On Tuesday, it is fresh fruit and canned goods while Wednesday is meat and more vegetables. The people who are in charge of this program give up a great deal of their time and we, who are volunteers belonging to the Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church, 916 S. Swanson St., have received many, many blessings for being part of this program. We enjoy this ministry very much. The organizers have been told that the church will be closing at the end of the year. Another building is needed to hold services and continue with the ministry of feeding the poor and homeless. The building belongs to the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania and they cannot continue to support this ministry. After helping out, one leaves this building with gratitude that we met these people who are such caring individuals and want to share this quote: “I was hungry and they gave me food, thirsty and they gave me water. I felt alone and they brought me in. It’s a quote by which we should all live. Hopefully, someone will provide a building where all of the good work will continue.

be looking over your shoulder. There is no escaping him no matter how clever you think you are. Wall Street banks got a bailout, but you are still on the hook; bankruptcy cannot save you. The only option you have is to temporarily delay payments, but the interest keeps on accruing, and your mountain of debt gets even higher. Uncle Sam doesn’t want to hear your sob story that the country is recovering from the worst recession since the Great Depression. If you took out college-loans, the government feels it is not its problem even though you cannot land a job that pays a living wage salary so you can afford to send them a monthly payment, which is typically a few hundred dollars. I consider myself fortunate to have never missed a college-loan payment, and I was able to pay off all my loans eight years after I graduated from college. Sacrifices were certainly made. I always bought used cars, and I ended up living at home for a few years before finally

V I E W Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion

being able to afford to move out on my own. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' most recent report states that out of the 10 fastest growing jobs, only one of them, biomedical engineers, pays an average base salary of more than $81,000. The two fastest growing jobs are, personal care aides, average salary of $19,640 and home health aides, typical annual salary is $20,560. If you are a college student who has taken out loans, you might want to start getting cozy to the idea of living with Mom and Dad much longer than you had anticipated because when the college-loan bubble implodes, you are going to want to be living at home. Outstanding, student-loan debt has reached $1 trillion and now even has surpassed our countries consumer credit-card debt. Indebted to Uncle Sam To the Editor: Going to a four-year college has become synonymous with the American Dream. For many of us to be able to afford the tuition at a university, we have no other choice but to take out college loans, which on average add up to graduating with a principal balance of $25,000 strapped onto our backs. Once you sign on the dotted line to borrow the tens of thousands of dollars to fund your higher education, keep in mind until you pay back every dime, plus interest, Uncle Sam will

MAKING THE FIR FLY: An ornamented ďŹ r tree along the 900 block of Montrose Street symbolizes the joy and expectation of the Christmas season. Bypassing the machine About $10,000 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets were swiped from a state employee’s work vehicle in Passyunk Square last week. VISITOR CENTER continued from page 1 to purchase signature Italian Market items. With a soft opening in May during the street’s annual festival, the Italian Market Visitor Center, 919 S. Ninth St., started operation, and this past weekend, the $10,000 venture, funded entirely by the Italian Market Merchant’s Association, marked its official grand opening. “With Saturday being American Express Small Business Saturday, there was no better weekend to open a business than this weekend,” Michele Gambino, business manager for the South Ninth Street Business Association, said. “It’s a perfect fit for a grand opening weekend.” The Italian Market always had a very active merchants’ association, she said of the organization that conceived the center in 2010. When the pavements and awnings were refurbished and the festival was revived over a decade ago, a breath of new life was brought into the association. “Once they became active, we set up a mission statement, vision, goal and objectives and one of those goals was to open up a visitor center,” Gambino said. After five years of being aggressive and keeping an eye out for the perfect space, a former phone store became available in March. “Obviously our big thing is to be a center, a place for information where people come to be greeted into the Italian Market,” Gambino, who has been the business manager for the past five years, said. THE STORE’S WINDOWS — inscribed with the signature Italian Market, red, white and green lettering and a large sign hanging above — announced the grand opening. Author Linda Milanese-Kerschner stood behind a table out front to debut her book, “Pizza Friday,” about growing up in an Italian family and making pizzas on Friday evenings. On Sunday, Christina Pirello held the same spot to showcase her newest book, “I’m Mad as Hell, And I’m Not Going to Eat it Anymore,” both of which are on sale in the store. A Toys for Tots box was assembled next to the table while veteran accordion player Ralph Salerno took turns playing inside and outside of the shop. Inside, Dave Brown from Talluto’s Authentic Italian Food, 944 S. Ninth St., passed out small bowls of a fresh mozzarella cheese and tomato salad while customers also sampled olives and meats from a Di Bruno Bros., 930 S. Ninth St., antipasto tray or a sweet treat from Anthony’s Chocolate House, 915 S. Ninth St., all while learning about the visitor center, picking up a shopping map brochure or browsing the goods for sale. Since May, the association has learned through trial

and error what works and what doesn’t in regards to items for sale. Gambino said the group plans on restructuring to become a visitor center gift shop in the coming year. In the middle of Saturday afternoon, passers-by were called to come in and experience a little bit of the Italian Market. And they could purchase items such as a spaghetti spoon from Talluto’s, measuring cups from Fante’s Kitchen Wares Shop, 1006 S. Ninth St., olive oil, homemade pasta, Italian aprons and shirts, toy accordions and more. From Friday through Sunday in celebration of the grand opening weekend, the business association organized a sleuth of entertainment including “Ask the Merchant” where owners Emilio Mignucci of Di Bruno Bros. and Tina Grassia of the Italian Market Spice Co., 949 S. Ninth St., conducted tastings. Customers even joined in singing with the accordion player while merchants set up and decorated the Christmas tree and nativity scene directly across the street. Other activities included macaroni art for the kids, a meet and greet with artist Tessa Meier and a Mummers’ trio. Meier, owner and founder of Featherstone portraits, created a series of paintings depicting moments in the Italian Market including exchanges and interactions among merchants and customers, unique landscapes and colors of produce to describe just a few, all of which are on display in the visitor center. A resident of the Italian Market neighborhood since ’03, she even introduced a few new pieces. As a whole, the Italian Market merchants seemed pleased with Saturday’s turnout. “I think it’s the greatest thing that we have done as an association,” Brown said. Six part-time employees help manage the self-sustainable nonprofit entity.

More than 70 of the association’s active merchants were influential in getting the 300-square-foot, ground-floor visitor haven off of the ground and chipped in for the grand-opening festivities. “It’s for the betterment of the street, it’s cleaner and nicer,” Brown said. “It’s all to give the customer a better experience.” Felicia Ottobre, of 13th and Dickinson streets, stopped in with her friend after purchasing a pizzelle iron at Fante’s as a gift and agreed. “I think it’s a great idea,” she said while her friend browsed the selections and reiterated the same sentiment. The store has a little bit of everything, Gambino said. It acts as a center point or association office of sorts for merchants and a neighborhood location as well. “It has become this place that people are sort of attached to,” she said. One older neighbor stopped in just to say hello while a couple who hadn’t been in the area for decades used the site for recommendations. If neighbors are entertaining family or friends from out of town, they stop into the visitor center to introduce them to the neighborhood. As one of the top three tourist destinations in the city and with more than 100 small businesses, the visitor center was the result of the innate need for the Italian Market to have a better representation to tourists. “That’s what makes the Italian Market so interesting, it’s a small-business district for the neighborhood, but a whole bunch of tourists come down to experience the market as well,” Gambino, a West Deptford, N.J., resident, said. hiladelphia high schools are invited to participate in Shire’s Great Food Fight! benefitting Philabundance, and help the growing number of food-insecure families who turn to the local organization based at 3616 S. Galloway St., for assistance. By collecting food during February and March, Shire’s Great Food Fight! comes at a time when Philabundance’s inventory is typically low after holiday food drive donations have been distributed. The Shiresponsored regional high school food drive will provide a much needed boost of nonperishable foods to those in need. Participating schools will compete for financial prizes of $10,000, $5,000 or $1,000 while joining forces to achieve an ambitious goal: To collect 100 tons of food — the equivalent of 200,000 meals — for Philabundance over a twoweek period. In 2012, the second year of the initiative, 21 schools collected 71 tons of food. Dec. 15 is the deadline for high schools to register with the collection drive running from Feb. 25 to March 8. NAVY YARD TRANSIT continued from page 1 doning SEPTA, whose Route 17 makes weekend Navy Yard stops and whose Route 68 ventures to Tasty Baking Co., 3 Crescent Drive. Rather, they are aiming to address the 71’s low ridership figures and allow the transit operator to allocate buses to busier lines. Five percent of Navy Yard employees reach their sites via public transportation, according to a February corporation survey, with Agate noting the replacement option and the express, set mainly to benefit GlaxoSmithKline workers who will begin moving from Center City to 5 Crescent Drive next month, will likely triple that mark. “To some degree this is experimental, but with Glaxo’s impending move, this is a great time to try it,” Agate, who revealed the Navy Yard’s operating expenses will grant passengers free rides, said. The present offering dates back to 2004, when the City, SEPTA and Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp., as part of its master plan, developed it to convey Navy Yard personnel. It begins at AT&T Station, Broad Street and Pattison Avenue, and courses through the campus using two paths, aiding an average of 307 daily commuters, SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch said. That places it 83rd out of 120 routes, and though its $77,000 revenue lags way behind its $243,000 operating cost, it has not become a liability for his employer, whom he said hopes riders will call upon in connecting with either the shuttle or the express. “Anything that will increase transit use has our support,” Busch said. The current model begins services at 5:42 a.m., with roughly 20-minute increments for its 17 morning and 17 afternoon and evening trips, the last terminating at AT&T Station at 6:50 p.m.. Next week’s substitute slightly will alter those periods, allowing for 19 and 21 such journeys, respectively. The reduced waits could make a difference for Davis and his fellow travelers by diminishing the likelihood of tardiness, with the complimentary jaunts certain to prove popular, too.

“Although I can walk from AT&T Station to The Navy Yard, the shuttle will be great during inclement weather conditions and also if you are just trying to get into work more quickly,” Davis said. “I feel it will increase ridership because the shuttle is free and someone will not have to pay an extra fare or waste an extra token to ride it.” LIKE ITS PREDECESSOR, The Navy Yard Loop will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and contain bicycle racks. Wi-Fi capabilities will offer novelty to the maximum ridership of 40 patrons, who may elect to use a mobile phone application to alert them of the location of the loop. The vehicle will essentially follow the 71’s trail but will add Langley Avenue as a destination, endowing even more workers with a potential commute solution. Agate el al notified them of the shuttle’s implementation two weeks ago, having discussed its feasibility at Sept. 21’s onsite Transit Connections Forum overseen by state Sen. Larry Farnese. The meeting drew many of the employers from the campus’ 120 businesses and transportation agency heads to plot the expanse’s transit identity. They agreed on the shuttle and the express as solutions but not certainties. “We’ll take another survey in the spring to observe ridership patterns and gauge satisfaction,” Agate said. He will hope to hear great responses from Glaxo employees. Looking to strengthen its 172-year presence in Philadelphia, their company announced its relocation to the mixed-use office, research and industrial environment in February ’11. The arrival of 1,350 employees from two Center City offices by the end of next year’s first quarter will push the worker population beyond 10,000 and further the corporation’s mission to make the campus a regional hub. The fresh faces will reach their new four-story, 205,000-square-foot building via The Navy Yard Center City Express. Officials had considered three locations as its origin, choosing 10th Street between Market and Filbert streets because of its proximity to the widely used Market East

Station, which connects with numerous bus and rail lines. While the shuttle will run all day, the express, which will have the same amenities, will make 14 morning peak time runs, beginning at 6:15 a.m. and ending at 10:32 a.m., and 15 afternoon and evening peak excursions, starting at 2:30 p.m. and lasting through 7:25 p.m. Though it will cover less Navy Yard territory than the shuttle, it will be nonetheless crucial to working to enhance what Agate, who is overseeing a marketing campaign that will encourage employees to use the additions, sees as “the economic benefit of The Navy Yard.” “I will definitely be using the shuttle to get to my job most of the time,” Davis said. The McKean hire one day might be able to take the Broad Street Line to complete his duties, as the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, the corporation, the Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Utilities and SEPTA applied for a Federal Transit Authority grant to further plans to extend the underground option 1.5 miles into The Navy Yard. The alteration could cost $370 million, according to the corporation’s ’09 The Broad Street Line Extension Feasibility Study, and the forum attendees discussed possible funding sources. Even if the project proves too costly, Davis will enjoy the settled offerings. “I’m sure these additions will increase ridership by more than 10 percent because of the convenience and the more-than-flexible new schedules,” he said. “Riders will always be able to reach the shuttle and express throughout the day so they can arrive at and from work safely and easily.” SPR Visit navyyard.org/shuttle. Dave Jadico, one of two area residents behind a new production, brings an original silent piece to the stage. By Jess Fuerst Review Contributor

S

ilence is golden. At least, Queen Village’s Dave Jadico and co-star and co-writer Aaron Cromie hope so. “The piece is silent, meaning the characters don’t speak at all,” Jadico, from Sixth and Carpenter streets, said of yesterday’s world premiere of “Dave and Aaron Go To Work.” “There is no dialogue but there is a music score and soundtrack.” Jadico and Cromie — who have been working together in Philadelphia more than 10 years — brought the new piece “to life after six years in the making with a little help from 1812 Productions. “We were working on a piece for 1812 Productions, both Aaron and I were in that show, and it had a hat juggling part in that show. It was sort of a vaudeville production and we got to playing around since I’m a juggler also,” Jadico, 43, said. “We created these characters for a short Fringe piece called ‘Two Hats, Two Heads.’” The new work is an extension of that Fringe Festival show that received community support Photo provided by John Flak

Lifestyles to get off of the ground. “It sat on the back burner for five years. Then Jennifer Childs, who runs 1812, said they had an opening this year in the holiday/December slot and she asked us about the show,” Jadico said of the work that can be seen at Plays and Players Theater until Dec. 31. “A year ago 1812 raised some money to help us workshop it and now it’s finished.” The finishing touches, however, were being perfected up until the curtain opened. Jadico, who also does set design, was stacking books on the set’s shelves over the holiday break and the five-person cast — three of whom are not seen — were bringing all of the magic together just last week. “There are three other people working behind the scenes to do the stage magic and puppetry and special effects,” he said. “That was our intention from the beginning. We both have extensive training in clowning and physical comedy, so we’ve performed silently many times in different shows. “We’re both very comfortable with what is often referred to as clowning but it’s really more like what you see in Cirque du Soleil — they tell a story, which is why the silent film reference is a good reference, like the Charlie Chaplain films that tell a story.” A veteran of Philly stages, this is the

first large-scale piece that Jadico has created and brought to audiences. Though it was a milestone undertaking, the seasoned performer and artist doesn’t feel any of the first-time jitters. “I don’t really get nervous anymore. I feel anticipation and I get excited,” he said. “It’s comedy so you really don’t know till the last character is there and the last character is the audience. So when they show up, then we’ll know what kind of show we have.” JADICO’S FATHER THOMAS hails from 17th Street and Oregon Avenue, while his mother Angie (nee Acerbo) grew up at 11th and Morris streets. When Jadico and his many siblings arrived, however, the family moved to Bucks County. “My mom and dad are both Italian, and my grandfather owned a grocery store at 11th and Morris,” he said. “They didn’t speak any English since they were Italian immigrants.” Before Jadico moved back to his parents’ hometown in 2005, he grew up playing the saxophone, guitar and piano, and dreaming of a career in the arts. “I was actually going to go into music but under my parents advice we thought engineering would be smarter if I was trying to make a living,” Jadico said of his

1987 freshman year at Drexel University where he majored in architecture. “After a year, I realized more that I wanted to get into the arts. I shifted to music, which was more my speed.” Jadico completed a curriculum focused on recording and saxophone, but his design and fabrication background would later come back into play with his set design work. Drexel also offered him the opportunity to get a taste of the bright lights at center stage. “[In] my senior year in college I did my first show, ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.’ I really liked it,” he said. “Instead of going off looking for a music job, I auditioned.” Jadico landed a theater job outside the city that lasted a year, but a new artistic outlet would help form his current creation process. “ComedySportz had an ad saying they were having auditions so I just went to an audition,” Jadico, who is the current artistic director of the group for which he has performed with for 18 years, said. “That’s where I learned how to be an actor.” Being back in the city also suited Jadico, who found the nurturing community just what he needed to bring life to his many talents.

“I’ve really enjoyed entertaining people and making people laugh, which is why I have stuck with it all these years,” he said. “In Philadelphia you can make a living being an actor. There are a lot of theaters and it’s a good environment for creating new work. There is a lot of creation and private, independent support for the theater and new work.” With a foundation in improv, Jadico brings his many talents — music, design, and comedy — together in “Dave and Aaron Go To Work.” Cromie has similar sensibilities, which is why, Jadico said, they are often cast in the same productions and have had success collaborating. “It’s a fabulously funny show for all ages. In the way that all ages can appreciate ‘The Muppet Show,’ they can appreciate a show like this. We’re saying it’s for people 6 to 106 years of age,” Jadico said. And a show would not be complete without his biggest fans coming in with a frontrow ticket. “[My family] is very supportive. They come see me do all my work. I have a lot of siblings,” Jadico said, adding with a laugh, “They better be there.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

Based on Stephen Rebello’s book, “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho,” “Hitchcock” follows the personal life of the movie’s mastermind.

Clueless By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

A

rdent fans of Anthony Hopkins may want to see what the actor does as Alfred Hitchcock, whom he embodies with the help of abundant prosthetics, but it’s hard to think of another reason to recommend “Hitchcock,” a patronizing biopic about the famed suspense master. Watering down Stephen Rebello’s sourcebook, “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho,” the film is rather insultingly cobbled together, shoving wellknown material into the hands of serious actors in the evident hope of currying Oscar favor. The hook is that Alfred Hitchcock had a secret weapon — his wife, Alma Reville (Helen Mirren), who, apparently, was every inch the woman behind the man, revising, editing and even co-directing many of his films. Reville’s role is an interesting factoid to share with the public, but John McLaughlin’s laughable script makes it a gooey, banal core element — a strengthof-marriage dock to which the other failing elements can tie up. Even Mirren falls short of making an impression, playing a poorly drawn woman and getting an Oscar-clip scene that, like the rest of the film, feels routine to the point of lifelessness. Hitchcock himself is presented in a very unbalanced fashion, which begs the audience to alternately perceive him as a grotesque monster and loving husband. Director Sacha Gervasi often opts to make the icon wholly repellent, from his demeanor and terrible diet to his wild way with actresses, which famously led to the common terror of many leading ladies (in the film, Scarlett Johansson is Janet Leigh and Jessica Biel is Vera Miles). The one provocative

move sees Hitchcock dreaming of butcher knives and Ed Gein (Michael Wincott), and perhaps going so far as to fantasize murders of his own, but the thread is no sooner dropped in favor of more viewer backpatting. (Did you catch that blatant “Birds” reference? Good for you!) “Hitchcock” is the kind of film that would have been better left unmade, as it serves its makers a helluva lot more than it serves its subject, and its only sharp edges are those of the cookie-cutter sort.

One of the year’s few masterpieces, Benh Zeitlin’s “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is at once magical and bracingly authentic, taking place in the rarely-seen swamps of the Southern Delta, and using the tale of a young girl to convey beautiful post-Katrina allegory. Gorgeous in all its un-gorgeousnessness, the film is a true original, playing with form and narrative and channeling world events, all while presenting a poignant journey about family and self-discovery. A must-see. SPR Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-entertainment/movies.

matically assuming my favorite food is a cheesesteak; I have a photo of Frank Rizzo in my wallet next to a picture of my wife; I don’t know proper English; and maybe I’m mobbed up. Not that there’s anything wrong with liking cheesesteaks, Rizzo, that my English would please the Queen or having strangers thinking you might not be someone to mess with. Stereotypes are wrong because it’s a lazy way of thinking about the world and the people in it without doing the necessary personal research. It’s shorthand for insight. Another thing I don’t like is folks who perpetuate the South Philadelphia stereotype, trade off it, and then get offended when others stereotype them negatively. You keep calling folks “cuz” and using “yo” and some folks are liable to also believe you took basic English 101. When some stranger says this is a “colorful” area of the city, he or she is right, but it doesn’t mean the only musical heritage we have is played at the parade on New Year’s Day or singing in harmony on street corners. It doesn’t mean hoagies are our haute cuisine or our only interest in life is how long Andy Reid is going to haunt us before Jeffrey Lurie finally fires him. It also doesn’t mean we can’t get along with any ethnic or racial group but our own or our mother had a mole on her chin, went to church seven days a week and only took time out from praying the rosary to make meatballs on Sunday morning. Again, there’s nothing wrong with any of that, but it doesn’t necessarily define all of us. It might surprise you to find out that not everybody down here thinks “Rocky” is the best movie ever made. Some of us even realize Rocky Balboa is fictional and a stereotype off which Sly Stallone made a career. Pardon me if I take offense when I first meet you if you start asking me about mob hits or assume I never read a book. And I am not exactly thrilled when you ask me if it’s safe to walk around my neighborhood. It is and maybe we don’t want you walking around our neighborhood if you really feel that way. I just turned 74. I’m a white male and although I do get grumpy on occasion, I resent also being stereotyped as just another grumpy old white man. Is there a limit to the number of stereotyped groups one can fall into? Well, there should be. It might just surprise you this “grumpy old white man” thinks the only good tea party happened when Sam Adams and the boys dumped that British tea into the Boston Harbor, and that I have no problem with gay folks being gay or getting married. Please take the time to get to know us. SPR

hate stereotypes. Maybe it’s because we live in an area that has become one big stereotype. Play a word association game with folks outside our area and see what they identify with South Philadelphia (notice I didn’t write “South Philly” because I dislike that nickname as much as people from San Francisco hate “Frisco.” I don’t make a big deal out of it. It’s just a personal thing with me.) Maybe I’m being too sensitive, but I don’t think so. Years ago I worked as a sports talk host at WIP. The program director called me into his office one day and said, “I thought you’re from South Philly.” “I am,” I replied, wondering where this conversation was heading. “Well, you don’t sound like you’re from South Philly,” he said. We got into a brief discussion about how he thought I should sound because I resided in South Philadelphia. The conversation included a snide remark from yours truly, who mentioned my folks had paid good money to send me to Temple University where I majored in communications so I wouldn’t think the plural of “you” is “youse.” It went right over his head. I left his office feeling that somehow I had disappointed him. What I realized years later was WIP has a lot of listeners in this part of the city. The boss must have believed if I started referring to the callers as “cuz” I would have connected better with the audience. Look, I understand there is a grain of truth in stereotypes. I also understand not all of the stereotypes about our area are necessarily negative. The problem is everybody gets tarred with the same brush. Strangers assume they know you because of where you live. I don’t want someone to assume they know my likes and dislikes, my attitudes and such because I have lived here all my life. Don’t be mistaken. Not wanting to be stereotyped is not the same thing as being ashamed of your background. Far from it. There’s a lot to like about South Philadelphia or I wouldn’t have remained here all of my life. I like the food, the accessibility, the sports complex, the overall feeling that South Philadelphia is where it is happening. I do wish South Philadelphia had even a fraction of the number of bookstores as it does pizza parlors and tanning salons. What I don’t like is somebody auto-

Eileen’s Slow Cooker Sausage Lasagna

Keeping warm

A

Passyunk Square eatery will host its fourth annual fireplace lighting Saturday. Devil’s Den, 1148 S. 11th St., holds Light My Fire at 1 p.m. with a limited selection of smoked and wood-aged beers, such as The Bruery’s White Oak, The Lost Abbey’s Deliverance and Nebraska Brewing Co.’s Hop God. For more information, call 215339-0855 or visit devilsdenphilly. com. SPR

S

low is one of those words that seems to be rarely used around the holidays as people rush from store to store making sure that everybody on their shopping list gets at least one gift. Eileen Collins’ Slow-Cooker Sausage Lasagna could help ease the stress. Once the resident of the 300 block of Wolf Street places her layered mixture in the slow cooker, she has six to eight hours to focus on running errands. When dinnertime arrives, grab a plate and scoop up a spoonful or two of this well-seasoned meal that you’ve been craving all day. SPR

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

1-1/2 pounds of sausage, cooked and chopped 4 cups of marinara sauce 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning 1/4 cup of onions, minced 15 ounces of ricotta cheese 1 cup of shredded Parmesan 3 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese 12 lasagna noodles, uncooked

E-mail news on restaurant openings or special events to asnyder@southphillyreview.com.

Combine the sausage, sauce and seasoning in a bowl and set aside. In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta, Parmesan and two cups of the mozzarella. Cover the bottom of the slow cooker with approximately 1/4 of the sauce. Layer in four of the lasagna noodles, breaking to fit. Top with half of the cheese mixture.

Dinner is on us Continue the process by alternating the layers: Sauce, four noodles, remaining cheese mixture, sauce, four noodles and sauce. Cover and cook on low for approximately six to eight

hours (three to four hours on high) until the noodles are al dente. Sprinkle with the remaining cup of mozzarella and let melt before serving.

She now lives in Idaho and was not here for Thanksgiving. Her older sister, who lives in northern Virginia, loved it too. out of the 1960s, before we told her it was tasty and ordered a half carafe ($13). We also received a loaf of Sarcone’s seeded bread. It was not crusty enough and the interior was cottony. But this is old world Italian-American food and there is nothing wrong with it. We noticed two gentlemen tucking into a small antipasto. It was called antipasto rustico ($11) and some would find it ordinary, but this is what I wanted at Marra’s. The plate contained a bed of cold iceberg lettuce dressed in olive oil, some olives, a few tiny cubes of sharp provolone, a few thin strips of salami and roasted peppers. “Remember that table over there?,” Edward asked as he nodded to a table for four a little bit away. “That’s when Berthe said she loved anchovies and we ordered a big anchovy pizza. It was much too much and realized a few anchovies with other ingredients would not make the pie as salty.” We ordered mussels in white sauce ($10.50), which were very sandy and gritty. Another order arrived a bit better. The sauce needs pep like white wine, garlic, onions, hot pepper flakes, but this is how Marra’s has been making mussels for decades. A small Margarita pizza ($8.50) was on order. Although I found the tomato sauce a bit sweet, it was fresh tasting and homemade. Small rounds of mozzarella topped the pie, along with a few basil leaves. Marra’s makes a thin-crust pie, so I was quite content.

wo weeks after Edward and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary, we hosted our first Thanksgiving dinner. I did all of the cooking myself. We started a new tradition the night before. Edward and I set two tables and went to Freddy’s for pizza. To this day, I never cook the night before Thanksgiving. And the only comfort food I crave is pizza. Freddy was an affable Hungarian who regaled us with stories of the Hungarian revolution and Hungarian food and wine. Although Freddy’s was a BYOB, he would always offer us a glass of white Hungarian wine. Frank, an Italian-American, was in charge of the kitchen. He baked marvelous pizza. Freddy and his wife married on Nov. 22, 1963, the day President Kennedy was assassinated. They thought about calling off the small, intimate ceremony, but decided some joy had to be celebrated before the next three dark days. After Freddy retired, we sought a new place for our Thanksgiving-Eve pizza. To this day, I don’t recall how we discovered Marra’s on East Passyunk Avenue, but it became our go-to spot for pizza and Italian-American fare. “Let’s go to Marra’s,” I said to Edward. I instantly knew a floodgate of memories would overcome me because I associate Marra’s with years gone by. My mother loved its pizza. The host showed us to a table by the window. Our server, the great granddaughter of the owners, offered us a sip of house pinot grigio, served in a wine glass straight

Patience is required as this recipe, filled with fresh aromas, needs time to reach its maximum enjoyment point, but it will likely become the hot topic at the table.

eef braised in red wine and stock is one of our favorite one-pot wonders. I always buy chuck and cook it on top of the stove for about three hours. During a cool spell, Whole Foods already sold out of chuck, so Sebastian the butcher recommended I substitute Boneless Short Ribs for the stew meat. Short ribs have become a restaurant menu favorite over the past few years. They can be braised in wine, stock or even beer. Chef Tre Wilcox prepared short ribs in a Corona sauce, which he served over cheddar grits during a “Top Chef” edition of restaurant wars. I had to try preparing short ribs at home. Sebastian told me the cooking time for braising is the same as for chuck. Short ribs are about four inches long and can be cooked in this state or cut into thirds. Onions, shallots and garlic are the aromatics of choice along with bay leaves and a sprinkling of dried thyme leaves. Mushrooms sautéed in butter go into the pot during the last 30 minutes of cooking time. You can serve short ribs with buttered noodles or mashed or sautéed potatoes. I recently played around with a sweet potato recipe that brought smiles around the dining table.

Sturdy greens are called here as they add flavor and texture to the dinner. Broccoli rabe, Swiss chard or kale are fine choices.

Enough canola oil to coat the bottom of a 4-quart pot 3 pounds of boneless short ribs, at room temperature, wiped dry with paper towels 2 large onions, diced 2 shallots, sliced 4 fat garlic cloves, sliced Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 4 heaping tablespoons of flour 2 cups of beef broth 1 cup of dry red wine 2 heaping tablespoons of tomato paste 2 large bay leaves Sprinkling of dried thyme

Directions: Heat the oil over medium-high. Add the short ribs and brown them on each side. Remove to a bowl using a slotted spoon. Sauté the onions and shallots for about five minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for a few minutes more while being careful not to burn the garlic. Return the short ribs to the pot and sprinkle with the flour. Sauté the beef until the

flour loses its raw appearance. Add all of the remaining ingredients, bring the contents of the pot to a boil, lower to simmer, cover the pot with the lid and simmer for about three hours. Serves four.

■ Quick No Fuss Mashed ■ Sweet Potatoes Ingredients: 4 jumbo yams or sweet potatoes, washed and dryed Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter Sprinkling of cinnamon

Directions: Prick the potatoes all over with a fork. Place them in a large glass lasagna dish and microwave on high for 30 minutes. Carefully remove them from the oven. Let the potatoes sit for about 10 minutes. Slice each potato in half, scoop out the flesh and place it in a saucepan. Mash the potatoes with the back of a soup spoon. When ready to serve, reheat the potatoes gently. Add the butter and cinnamon and blend well. Taste the potatoes because an extra tablespoon or so of butter can’t hurt. Heat over medium until heated through. Serves four.

■ Broccoli Rabe ■ with Bacon and Garlic Ingredients: 3 bunches of broccoli rabe 6 ounces of pancetta, diced 4 fat garlic cloves, sliced 4 heaping tablespoons of olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Sprinkling of hot pepper flakes

Directions: Bring a pot of salted water to the boil. Add the broccoli rabe and blanche for about three minutes. Drain the broccoli rabe in a colander and rinse with cold water. Drain well. Sauté the pancetta in a 12-inch skillet until just crisp. Remove to a bowl using a slotted spoon. Add the olive oil to the skillet and heat over medium. Add the garlic and sauté for a few minutes. Add the broccoli rabe to the skillet and season with the salt, pepper and hot pepper flakes. Sauté the broccoli rabe over medium-high heat for about five minutes. Serves four. The Maine attraction An East Passyunk Crossing student will toss fastballs for a New England institution.

J

ust as he has needed to ponder which pitches will baffle batters while manning the mound for Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., Joe Kinee found himself contemplating which postsecondary site would best benefit his brain. The All-Catholic hurler shook off interest from three suitors to select the University of Maine, signing with the America East Conference member Nov. 14. Before heading to New England, though, the senior standout hopes to add a third consecutive Catholic League championship plaque to his East Passyunk Crossing school’s walls. “Each school left me with a good taste in my mouth,” the resident of the 2400 block of South 16th Street said last week. “I began to become nervous about which I would choose.” The 18-year-old learned of Maine’s interest during the summer through participation in the All Star Baseball Academy. He made his official visit Sept. 28, with his observations leaving Holy Cross, Saint Joseph’s and Villanova universities as disappointed pursuers. “The feelings were intense when I got there, and the whole atmosphere drew me in,” Kinee said. “I really saw it as a place where I could flourish as a student athlete.” While his diamond duties will center on making the Black Bears contenders, he will focus on physical therapy as his major, advancing his scientific sympathies. Though he also calls on math to build his analytic skills, Kinee enjoys civics, too, with three years as class president helping him to augment his outgoing nature. The teenager has devoted much care to developing a diverse definition of a leader, using classrooms and fields as work spaces. He has excelled in both, with ranking 11th in his class, gaining entrance into the National Honor Society and re-

ceiving distinction as a Millay Scholar proving the former and earning FirstTeam nods as a pitcher and an infielder cementing the latter. “I would say my proudest individual accomplishments are my All-Catholic honors,” Kinee, whose pitching ledger included a 6-0 Blue Division record, said. “As for the team, it’s been great knowing so many people committed to winning.” THE DEDICATED COMPETITOR began his courtship of victories during a sixyear stint at the Delaware Valley Youth Athletic Association, 2840 S. 18th St. He discovered an interest in pitching at age 11 and began working with former Major League pitcher and 1983 St. John Neumann High School alumnus Frank DiMichele in eighth grade. “Frank has changed me from a thrower into a pitcher,” Kinee said of the southpaw, who appeared in four games for the California Angels, now the Los Angeles Angels of

Anaheim, in ’88. “I’ve responded to his message about remaining composed no matter the circumstances.” A year into his tutelage, the confident athlete began his secondary career, earning a varsity roster spot as a freshman. Joining a loaded squad, he saw his opportunities increased in his sophomore campaign, which saw the Saints down Monsignor Bonner 3-1 to capture the parochial prize and conquer Franklin Towne 6-1 to win the Class AAA City Title. In the latter at McNichol Field, 26th and Moore streets, Kinee tossed two shutout innings, punching out five outclassed hitters. “That year gave me confidence to have a great junior season, making me believe I could be someone to lean on,” he said. With new coach Mike “Big Zoom” Zolk guiding the action, Kinee

Following a 13-0 humiliation of Philadelphia Electrical and Technology in the City title game at Ashburn Field, 20th Street and Pattison Avenue, Kinee opened the state playoffs with a 2-0 win over Twin Valley, though he needed to work out of three bases-loaded jams. “I approached that game like all others, concentrating on minimizing distractions and getting outs any way I can,” he said. Kinee also drove in the game-winning run with a single, ingratiating himself even more to Zolk. “He’s a great kid who loves to compete, who is relentlessly hardworking and who will do anything I ask him to do for our school and program,” the coach said. “Kids feed off Joe’s competitive fire, as do I.” Because of his pedigree, Zolk believes Kinee will be a most valuable player candidate and a chief mentor for their young group. “I can’t think of a better role model on and off the field to help our young kids learn not only about our program but also about hard work, commitment and being just a good person,” Zolk said. Set to serve as the Saints’ co-ace with fellow senior right-hander John LaMotta, Kinee will not shirk his duties as a workhorse, even mentioning he would accept a request to play the outfield if Zolk wants to pencil in another player at third base. “If I want the young guys to step up, I have to do so too,” Kinee said. “I want us to keep the same family atmosphere and leave with more titles and deeper friendships.” As the college selection process often left him feeling burdened, the young man is enjoying parting with pressure and anticipates a fruitful final few months in South Philly. “The weight’s off,” he said. “It’s time to enjoy this year with my teammates and friends.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. 3 Tips Before selling 1 2 3

Ask your agent to show you their marketing plan- (It’s no coincidence that we sell 70% of the Homes in your area). Interview any other agents that you might have in mind- (find out where & how many of your commission dollars are being spent to advertising your property. Find out where your commission dollars are really going- (90% of buyers start their search by looking for homes on the internet.) What is your online presence? Can potential buyers even see your home?

The permit application is being submitted to authorize the acceptance of up to 300 tons per day of municipal waste in addition to the currently approved acceptance of construction /demolition waste. The construction and operation of the existing facility was approved by DEP on July 14, 2008 with authorization to accept up to 1500 tons per day of approved waste with all outbound waste to be transferred by rail except for up to 300 tons per day of waste by truck. The application does not propose any changes in the current approved capacity of the facility, the permit area, outbound truck limits or operating hours. Internal modifications to the approved transfer facility are proposed to address issues concerning the acceptance and transfer of municipal waste. All municipal waste received will be transferred by truck to designated, permitted disposal facilities. As the host municipality and county, the City of Philadelphia may submit comments to DEP within 60 days of receipt of the permit application recommending conditions upon, revisions to and approval or disapproval of the permit application. DEP will also accept and consider comments from the public during the permit review process. A copy of the permit application will be available for review at the DEP Southeast Regional Office, 2 East Main Street, Norristown, PA 19401-4915. Comments should be directed to Mr. Robert D. France, Acting Regional Waste Management Manager at this same address.
