that afternoon but bonded with 47 acquaintances from the Christian Street YMCA, 1724 Christian St., for their eighth annual holiday luncheon. Though Minggia had hoped only to give them recognition for their roles in building her well-being, she received a surprise as they commended her tireless fight against a rare ailment and devotion to their vitality. Standing by Washington To the Editor: As you may know, the School District of Philadelphia released a list of school closings. Amongst those was my school, George Washington Elementary [1198 S. Fifth St.]. I am saddened by this news not only because of my position, but because of the potential George Washington obtains. Once you walk through the halls you will see and feel the learning that goes on in this building. We are a community of lifelong educators and learners. The school district is making a mistake. We are currently working on cards of sympathy and enjoyment for the victims and families of [Connecticut’s] Sandy Hook Elementary.

ing open presents that were left for them by Santa. Because of you, many of these children will now get to know what that feels like. I believe that there is nothing more gratifying than putting the smile on the face of a child. Thanks for giving them a chance to believe that there really is a Santa Claus, and most of all, for making them smile. [Review Sales Rep] Mary Ellen [Corazo] is so fortunate to be working with such very kind and compassionate people. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!

To the Editor: How ironic is it that after this tragic horror that took place in Connecticut, we find all religious leaders of every possible faith in a public school participating in a prayer service for the families of the deceased victims. The very public schools that have no need for God, yet we find them doing just that, praying. Our president, who spoke very well, quoted scripture and Jesus as he tried his hardest to comfort this devastated community. It was very nice to hear those words come out of his mouth. I would say that it’s time to put God back in the schools. As you can see by this tragedy, he was welcomed back for a one-night-only appearance.

Police responded to the 2800 block of South Iseminger Street at 2:55 p.m. Dec. 12 for a report of a person with a gun, Officer Tanya Little of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. A man who posted his bail stemming from burglary charges was caught allegedly trying to break into another home Friday. David Men, 23, of the 2300 block of South Darien Street, allegedly was standing on top of an air conditioner located in the rear of a 33-year-old woman’s home on the 2800 block of South Eighth Street, opened a second-story window and hoisted himself inside at 7 p.m. Friday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When a man walking his dog spotted Men, who has nine other aliases listed in court records, from an alley, he asked a neighbor if the dwelling’s owner was home, Tolliver said. The neighbor observed Men jumping to the ground, and another neighbor tackled

and held down Men until police arrived. While Men did not take anything from the residence, he was arrested Nov. 12 for an Aug. 28 burglary on the 2400 block of South 12th Street, and posted a percentage of his $5,000 bail Nov. 13, according to court records. For his most recent offense, he was charged with criminal conspiracy, burglary and criminal trespassing, and his bail was set Saturday at $50,000, which he had not posted by press time, according to court records. The 36-year-old deliveryman was dropping off prescription drugs at 1 p.m. to Olde Philly Pharmacy, 2036-38 S. Third St., when an unknown man pointed a black firearm at him and said, “Give me the keys to the van or I’ll kill you,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Instead of complying, he fled into the business and locked the front door behind him. The offender, who was described as white, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, heavy, and wearing black clothing, fled empty-handed west on Snyder Avenue and northeast on Moyamensing Avenue in a black SUV or minivan. The unidentified man tossed a brick through the store’s front window at about 2:15 a.m., jumped the counter, grabbed several boxes of cell phones, valued at $265, from a rear drawer and fled through the window, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Police were unable to locate him after arriving to the scene five minutes after the break-in. The suspect is described as a black man, in his 30s; having facial hair; and wearing a black hat, black coat, jeans and white sneakers. The same store was robbed at 3:46 p.m. Nov. 5 when a pair of robbers left with

Girl troubles A teenager stabbed a man in an attempted Newbold/Point Breeze mugging Dec. 13. The 37-year-old was on the 1700 block of Federal Street after leaving a friend’s home when an unknown girl holding a steak knife approached him and commanded cash, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man resisted and was stabbed once in the abdomen. The victim ran to 15th and Ellsworth streets where he flagged down police and lost the offender, who fled in an unknown direction. Medics transported the victim in stable condition to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he was treated and released. The perpetrator was described as a black female with a medium complexion, age 16 to 18, 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-6, 160 pounds, having short, black hair and wearing a blue and green jacket. Sharp tactics A father-and-son argument resulted in the elder man threatening his kin with a two-foot-long machete. During a squabble of an unknown nature at 11:52 p.m. Dec. 5 at the family’s home on the 700 block of Snyder Avenue, Reinaldo Sierra, 62, allegedly walked toward his 28-year-old son and swung the machete while standing about five feet from him, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The offspring fled into his bedroom while awaiting police arrival, by which time Sierra had left the premises. Police transported the man to South Detectives to be interviewed, Tolliver said. While waiting, his father is believed to have called and warned there would be trouble when he came home. Officers accompanied the man back to his residence where they discovered Sierra allegedly screaming from a second-floor window. Officers arrested Sierra, but did not recover the weapon. Sierra was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and possession of an instrument of crime, according to court records. A man was robbed of his car while stopped at an intersection Tuesday. At 2:20 a.m., the 24-year-old was headed eastbound on the 600 block of Snyder Avenue, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. When he stopped at a red light at Sixth Street, two unknown men approached the driver’s side of his dark green, 1998 Chrysler Concord. One of the men pointed a black handgun at him and demanded the car before yanking the driver from the auto, Tolliver said. The man struggled as the other offender tried to search his pockets, so the offender punched the car’s owner in the face. With the gunman in the driver’s seat, the other thief hopped in the backseat and the pair fled eastbound on Snyder in the sedan with a Pennsylvania license plate, HYN9568, Tolliver said. It is unknown if the victim sought medical treatment. The armed man was described as black with a dark complexion, in his mid-20s; having a medium build and a beard; and wearing a dark-colored hoodie and pants. A detailed description of his accomplice was not available at press time. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

A hospital patient was arrested after allegedly throwing a pail of vomit at his nurse last week. Nathaniel Vereen, 24, of Northeast Philly, was allegedly admitted to Methodist Hospital at 1:30 a.m. Dec. 13, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. While in the emergency room, he became irate when the attending physician declined to provide him a narcotics prescription for his ailment. Upon allegedly becoming disappointed in his medical attention, he is believed to have declared that he wished to be discharged, Tolliver said. A 44-year-old nurse went to remove the IV from his arm, but he allegedly yelled, “No, don’t touch it. I want to talk to the doctor” before turning away from her. When she turned to exit the room, Vereen allegedly hurled a bucket full of his vomit, which landed all over her back. Vereen was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records. He posted 10 percent of his $3,000 bail Dec. 18. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

CASINO REVOLUTION continued from page 1 Category 2 slot machine license, a move that could situate a casino and a hotel along a stretch that would include his company’s headquarters. “I’ve always looked to take advantage of opportunities, and applying for this project is another example of that,” the octogenarian said Monday. The New Jersey native, who splits his time between the Garden State and Florida, added that proposals by Stadium Casino LLC, who wants a gaming hall adjacent to the Holiday Inn, 900 Packer Ave., and PA Gaming Ventures LLC, who wishes to build within the Food Distribution Center at 700 Packer Ave., inspired him to consider expanding his portfolio, culminating with the Nov. 14 incorporation of PHL Local Gaming LLC and his Nov. 15 submission to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. He has aligned himself with Chicago’s Merit Management Group, which specializes in overseeing local casinos akin to what all six suitors for the license want, to plot Casino Revolution, an intended multi-phase venture that would in its early existence consist of a gambling site and a 250-room hotel that together would occupy a little more than one million square feet. Developer and Merit CEO Joseph J. Canfora said Monday that more plans are forthcoming and that the present ideas, including restaurants, a buffet, a steakhouse, a food court and parking, total $367 million. “It’s a nice parcel of land to build a casino on,” he said. “The acreage Mr. Procacci has definitely offers us flexibility to have a positive impact on the area. On a macro level, these requests are all about location, location, location.” To build their case for securing permission to build Pennsylvania’s 12th casino and offer 2,000 slot machines, 60 gaming and 25 poker tables, the business partners gave the board a 10-page site impact study that envisions their creations’ locations to be between South Front and Third streets, with Packer and Pattison avenues as the dominant thoroughfares. The traffic flow will not cause problems because of the project’s relative distances from the stadium district, according to the document, with Canfora adding the buildings’ separation from neighborhoods gives PHL three immense plusses. “My acreage probably stands out the most,” Procacci, the owner of seven buildings across a 1.4-million-square-foot expanse, said. “We’re eager to make use of our territory and definitely have the funds to back this plan entirely.” The proprietor, who along with sibling

Casino Revolution and its associated amenities would occupy more than one million square feet. Rendering Provided by Hnedak Bobo Group

Michael formed Procacci Bros. in 1948 out of their father’s Camden basement, established his local presence in ’64, purchasing space in the Food Distribution Center. With operations also in Mexico, Puerto Rico, California, Florida, North Carolina and New Jersey, he oversees 12,500 employees responsible for handling nearly 300,000 tons of produce and flowers annually. The wholesale behemoth received the ’95 Produce Man of the Year Award from The Packer, a fresh produce industry publication, and maintains an active profile with his first brainchild due to his vow to work another 11 years. With a firm reputation in one field, one might wonder why Procacci, who would employ 1,000

workers as Casino Revolution’s primary stakeholder, would seek novelty now. “This would be new for me,” he said. “However, with my background, I think locals would be glad to have me as a casino owner, and I would make great use of area vendors and investors, too.” LIKE THE OTHER applicants, including two parties who would like a Center City casino and one who covets a Fishtown location, Procacci needed to submit a letter of credit or bond worth $50 million to the board, the equivalent of a slot license’s cost. If he were to win over the authorities, he would have to give $16.5 million more to cover the table games component.

The entities are rolling figurative dice after officials decided during the summer to accept proposals for the license, which for four years belonged to backers of the Foxwoods Casino project, who wanted to give Fishtown’s SugarHouse Casino a city-based gambling complement on South Columbus Boulevard between Tasker and Reed streets. Their failure to honor promises to raise sufficient equity doomed the deal and caused the board in December 2010 to revoke a license for the first time. The victor in the high stakes competition could offer as many as 5,000 slot machines and 250 table games. “We’re aiming for a balanced approach to the numbers game,” Canfora said of Casino Revolution’s decision not to make use of the maximum allotments. “This way we cut down on problematic issues and concentrate on rewarding the board for its trust in us.” The developer desires to replicate the success of Bellingham, Wash.’s Silver Reef Casino, which Merit manages and has devoted energy toward in making it a beacon for job training and economic growth for the Evergreen State. Money matters certainly will surface 9 a.m. Feb. 12 when the board will host an information-only session at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The Center City site also will oversee public input hearings on all six projects April 11 to 12. Beginning March 4, the board’s website will open for registration for those interested in speaking at the hearings. A die-hard casino supporter, Jake Lilliworth plans to attend. “It’s the American way to make a living,” the resident of the 1700 block of South Orianna Street said. “I’ve read about all the projects and applaud the principals. They’re rich and want to get richer.” “I have mixed feelings about this proposal,” Steve Scarlata, of 18th and Johnston streets, added. “It’s better to have a casino than an abandoned lot, but this location is not far enough removed from SugarHouse and would likely saturate the market since it is catering to the same clientele. With Chester [Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack] and Atlantic City so close, I don’t see this as a good move from a business standpoint.” Board spokesman Doug Harbach stated his employer will carefully review all comments and proposals. With no definitive timeline set for naming the license’s victor, Procacci hopes the powers that be will favor his expansive concept. “The opportunity is there to build,” he said, “and I believe we have the best plan.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. YMCA continued from page 1 Sisters of the Water, who aside from breaking bread sealed their place in her heart by giving her a crystal plaque symbolic of the clarity of the water than binds them. “I have a love for coordinating and really wanted to use that to give us another occasion for sharing,” Minggia, a 2012 South Philly Review Difference Maker who offers one-hour sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays, said before her unexpected accolade. “These are phenomenal people who give credence to my belief that we should treat others the way we would want for them to treat us.” Such a philosophy, rooted in her deep relationship with God, has guided the gregarious figure her entire life but most intensely over the last 30 years. She struggles with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a disorder in which one’s immune system counters its traditional role and damages nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and often paralyzing the afflicted. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that 3,000 to 6,000 Americans develop it annually, meaning as many as two cases per 100,000 people. “I’ve had to hold on to my spirit because it’s been a long, often rough road,” Minggia, who deals with permanent damage to her central nervous system, said within feet of Moses, the walking stick that has guided her gait since her diagnosis. The beloved organizer infrequently called upon her aid during the five-hour celebration, as she confidently covered the distance separating the seven tables, dishing out an anecdote to almost every friend. She began developing the unions in ’05, three years after her malady had forced her into retirement, seemingly ending a productive professional identity that included 17 years as a City employee, the lion’s share with the Department of Human Services. Her recovery plan included pool therapy, an interesting proposition for the non-swimmer, but Minggia, who five years ago acquired certification from the Arthritis Foundation, accepted the recommendation and made the six-block trek from her thenresidence to the YMCA to rejuvenate her body and soul. “And I met these fantastic people,” she said with a wave of her arms. “We have such a strong connection and love each other for who we are. We all know we have limits, but there are so many different feelings once we’re in the water.” MINGGIA, WHO WELCOMES as many as 30 students per gathering, immediately sought to repay her peers for their genial natures and talked with her superiors

They left the confines three years ago for a Bala Cynwyd restaurant before Minggia found the present location last year. “It’s an easy fit,” she said as her mates began their meals. “These events add another dimension to our lives, and I’m grateful to the Y for helping us to fill our companionship needs.” While the attendees dined on steak, chicken, stuffed shells, mixed veggies, rice, salad and ice cream, they discussed their families, friendships and pool prowess as

Most of her festive friends came from her current class, whose members range in age from 43 to 96, with 10 attendees from the aerobics gang. Minggia had begun teaching the groups simultaneously but chose to concentrate on the former after six months because of health considerations. Regardless of duration

Though the endowment endeared her to the pupils even more, they doubled Minggia’s delight when they pre sented the plaque. “Oh my darling, oh my darling,” she of fered as her opening, choosing the refrain from “Oh My Darling, Clementine,” which she sings during sessions. “You hold such a special place in my heart, and a day lik today provides a great reminder that no matter how horrendous our struggles may become, if we acknowledge the presenc of God, we will find a way.” Minggia, who credits her aquatic test as mental and physical strength builders then joined her irreplaceable confidant for rollicking dance numbers, including the “Electric Slide,” which allowed her to show her syndrome will always receiv her resistance. “Carrolyn is outstanding,” Christophe Fine, the aquatics group’s youngest mem ber, said as he adjusted his Santa hat and flashed the smile that has made the specia needs figure a popular presence. The resident of the 1200 block of South Broad Street joined the class two year ago, desiring to have fun and to stay coo during the summer. His formal foray into disciplined aquatics has given Fin many joyful moments, and he yearns fo more mornings and celebrations with hi friends. “Everything is beautiful there,” the joy ous gentleman, one of a handful of men who provide The Sisters of the Water bit of gender diversity, said. “I’m gratefu for Carrolyn because she makes us fee great.” SPR

A recent South of South transplant hits the right notes in an original holiday musical. By Jess Fuerst Review Contributor

T

his year, Bckseet Productions has an untraditional story for the holiday season. “She’s in her mid-30s. She’s recently unemployed, just like everyone else. Basically, she’s a businesswoman embittered and jaded. Life didn’t go the way she thought it would go,” Cindy Spitko, of 23rd and Fitzwater streets, said of her character in the production, “ELFuego.”

“ELFuego” is an original musical by Bckseet artistic director and South Philadelphian Kate Brennan, where four unlikely companions join forces with a disgruntled North Pole elf who tries to save Christmas. Spitko’s task is taking on Hope, a former Freddie Mac executive with little holiday spirit. “I kind of view her as pretty lonely, not having much of a social life. She’s all about work, and since she’s been fired from her job she’s not exactly sure where she belongs,” Spitko, 27, said.

Lifestyles Her companion travelers on this journey are a pregnant nun, a perpetual graduate student and a military veteran. Though the anecdote may not have a fairy-tale ending, Hope does find out what she brings to the table. “She has found happiness in this place she can belong and can contribute and they know who they are in this new world they created,” Spitko said. “If we were projecting and it was a year in the future after the play, she would provide the structure behind how the new North Pole works. She’s a backbone.” The play may feature a few world-weary characters, hardened by long hours at the office, but there is holiday cheer to be found by all ages. “I’ve been kind of grappling with this: Is it child appropriate? Because we do say curse words, but we say ‘elf’ instead of the curse, so it’s just implied. I think it is appropriate,” she said. “We had a 5-year-old kid in the audience and he loved it. “The target audience is adults, people that are kind of in their late-20s, early-40s, all within the generation where we’re constantly inundated with buy, buy, buy and sell, sell, sell. There’s a push against that now.” Opening last week, the production runs through Dec. 29 at The Adrienne Theater. The first few performances made the crew hopeful for a successful run.

“It can be like an oil painting out there when people don’t laugh at all, and they weren’t like that. It went great. They seemed to love it,” she said. FROM AMBLER, SPITKO was lucky enough to have access to effective and enthusiastic teachers who instilled a love of theater in her from an early age. “I’ve done it my whole life. I went to private school, so when we were really little, we had Christmas programs, so I got to sing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It was my first solo,” Spitko said. “I did it all through elementary and middle school. I went to Upper Dublin High School and there was an actress, Debbie Thompson, who runs an amazing theater program there. “We did three shows a year. It was a marathon. I was always exhausted, always working on theater. I really loved it, loved the rush of it.” Her love of the stage continued through college, where she earned her bachelor’s in acting from Arcadia University, which connected her with local artists, who helped to ease the transition from school to Philly’s stages. “I was with working actors, directors and producers. I was really taught by people that were constantly working and are still working. They’re colleagues of mine now,” she said.

Though Spitko feels she has a look that doesn’t fit easily with generic characters and can cause casting directors to pass over her, she has put together a evergrowing body of work that has included showcasing her singing voice, which is not something people often associate as part of her repertoire. “[Brennan sent me an e-mail saying] ‘here’s all the info about this part,’” Spitko said, adding that she and Brennan worked together on a project three years prior. “I went in and there were two or three other actresses auditioning. I auditioned and I don’t do all that much musical theater, so they were surprised to hear me sing.” Musical theater, however, is a favorite of Spitko’s. And the work the cast has put into “ELFuego” lives up to the genre’s standards. “What I really appreciate about really good musical theater is that the song really lifts above what words can simply do. That’s the whole point — the reason for songs in a musical theater show,” she said. “It’s something to appreciate that sometimes a monologue can’t explain it, but what can is them hitting these high or low notes. What it’s really like breaking down the song is that the reason behind the lyrics is the same as the reason behind the notes. I also just love singing.”

The process of bringing together an original work is rigorous for cast and crew alike. While the notes and lyrics may have been laid down early on, the characters still needed to be fleshed out with the nuances each performer would bring when they entered rehearsals a month ago. “It definitely has grown. I think Kate was very solidified in what she wanted, so a lot of text and lyrics are very much the same. I really feel like, upon reading what we have now, the relationship developed with the cast and with the characters is much more deepened,” Spitko said. The last piece, the audience, came into the mix for the first time last week, and the work continues to be molded by what each house brings every night. “Basically what I’m telling people is it’s not your typical holiday show. I feel the show represents where we are generationally,” Spitko said. “We’re so oversaturated with Black Friday sales and corporations and all this nonsense. There is a beginning of backlash against that, a grassroots campaign. “This show represents how tired we are of what the holiday season has become.” SPR To purchase tickets, call 267-603-3533 or visit bckseet.com. By Tom Cardella Columnist

Christmas around thetraditional world Christmas means differ-

A

ent things around the world. Your intrepid columnist has dug out a few of the more unusual ones. The traditions are real. The comments his own. Greenland: The traditional meal is Kiviak. It consists of 500 auks (birds of the area) complete with feathers, beaks and all in a seal stew that is placed under a rock, sealed with grease and allowed to ferment for many months. And then, yummy! Think of Kiviak the next time you complain about the Christmas turkey. It is not true that Kiviak was the featured Christmas dish on “The Chew,” but Mario Batali did consider it. Italy: It is traditional that instead of Santa Claus, La Befena, the witch, brings presents to children. She is very economical; instead of needing all those reindeer, she uses a simple broom. The drawback is she scares the hell out of the children, and is one reason why my Uncle Nunzi fled the old country for America. Ukraine: Apparently they never heard of sprayed on snow, tinsel or Christmas ornaments in the Ukraine because natives decorate the tree with real spiders and spider webs. The big problem is they wind up with a lot of flies in their Christmas trees. Japan: Two things to remember if you’re celebrating Christmas in Japan. Never send a red colored card there because it is considered poor etiquette. Isn’t red one of the traditional colors of Christmas? It also is a tradition in Japan to eat at Ketucky Fried Chicken (true). Reservations are needed. I’m not sure whether they prefer original or extra crispy. Pass the soy sauce. Caracas, Venezuela: On Christmas Day in Caracas, the streets are closed and churchgoers rollerskate to services. This could be a kind of Christmas roller derby if they allowed body checks. You see what lengths people will go to when the NHL is on strike. Spain, Portugal and parts of Italy: Have you ever heard of El Caganer? This one is a bit bizarre even for me. The Caganer is a figure of a male with his pants down defecating to symbolize a good harvest. Think of the marketing possibilities — a definite natural for the Wildwood Boardwalk. Spain seems fixated on excrement because they also have a traditional Christmas “pooping” log that even has a name — Caga tió. Believe me, readers, I am not making this crap up (if you’ll par-

don the expression). The log is placed in a fireplace, beaten with a stick while serenaded with a traditional “pooping” song intended to encourage the log to do number two. The log gives forth (so to speak) candies, nuts and, as a grand finale, a head of garlic or salted herring. I don’t know about you, but I’m heading to Spain for my next holiday trip if only to see the salted herring emerge. Norway: In Norway, they hide the brooms to keep witches from stealing them and taking a ride on Christmas. No mention of why the Italians don’t steal this idea so La Befena is grounded in their country. United Kingdom: Always the sedate ones, the folks of the U.K. simply make a wish while mixing pudding in a clockwise direction. Maybe Jell-O can market a version. Latvia: This one could make it on Broad Street on New Year’s Day in our country. The Lats have a tradition called “Mumming,” whereby their Mummers wear a variety of masks, including the faces of bears, horses, goats, gypsies and living corpses. What, no ostrich plumes? Austria: In Austria, they celebrate Krampus Night (no, it doesn’t occur every 28 days) during which Santa’s evil twin punishes naughty children. This is why my Austrian Uncle Karl fled Austria when he was very young. Spain again: As if it weren’t enough to be content with a tradition of defecating figurines and “pooping” logs, Spain also has a unique tradition on New Year’s Eve. People of all ages wear red underwear and sometimes nothing more to bring in the new year. I’m picturing a Spanish model wearing red Victoria’s Secret lingerie. Can you hurry up with my booking to Spain for the holidays? Finland: Here’s a cozy Finnish tradition. The whole family heads to the cemetery on Christmas Eve to pay respect to the deceased. Picture the children singing sad songs and carrying candles while being traumatized for the rest of their lives. My family would have a lot of trouble if we were trying to live up to this Finnish tradition. How do you carry the plates of smelts, baccalà and calamari through the cemetery without spilling it? Luckily, we don’t have strange Christmas traditions in America. We buy a live tree and stick it in the corner of our tiny rowhome living room, decorate it with cheesy ornaments and lights that would never pass a real safety inspection and spray it with phony snow. We place toys around the tree, half of which get returned as soon as stores open Dec. 26. We eat a ton of food, get indigestion and promise to go a diet the very next day. And I wonder why a good Christmas song hasn’t been written in 40 years. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Top 10

Worst Movies of 2012

By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

O

f this year’s glaringly awful movies, all of which had the gaul to ask for your hard-earned cash, the ones that truly offended weren’t so much the dumb comedies and special-effects clunkers that annually fall to the bottom, but the failed prestige flicks that promised far more than entertainment. Behold the worst of the worst.

8. One for the Money The title says it all in this Katherine Heigl action comedy, which sees its star collect another paycheck to ingratiating effect. Feeding the stereotype that all New Jerseyians get their GTL (gym, tan, laundry) on, Heigl plays a Snooki-fied bail bondswoman in training, which is just as

6. Wrath of the Titans Many will tell you that “Clash of the Titans” marked a low-point in 3-D filmmaking, its hasty post-conversion resulting in grayed, hideous imagery. Now comes the cash-conscious sequel, which is just as ugly but twice as abrasive and bombastic. Following the modern mantra that more is more and bigger is best, “Wrath” sees a “Clash” Kraken and raises it an unfathomably huge lava monster, which all but eats the screen as viewers strain to keep watching. This is excess for excess’ sake, a needless sequel and the worst kind of studio tentpole. 5. The Raven As biopics go, “The Raven” must be some kind of first, desecrating its subject’s memory while twisting his final days into a bygone-era “CSI” episode. Someone is killing people in manners reflecting Edgar Allen Poe’s (John Cusack) stories,

4. The Devil Inside Sad proof that the found-footage thriller has yet to be a good gimmick and die, “The Devil Inside” follows a dreadful non-actress as she pretends to look for her possessed mother in Vatican City, where nuns wear creepy contact lenses and Beelzebub’s victims scratch crosses into their skin. There’s no sense recounting the details here: It’s the same old jolts, body contortions, and lame excuses to keep the camera rolling. But don’t doubt the film’s validity, cuz, you know, it’s based on true events. 3. John Carter Fanboy purists will bark at you all day in defense of “John Carter,” a film whose source text predates “Star Wars,” “XMen” and pretty much every other genre franchise, therefore making its infernal redundance forgivable. That’s all very nice, but being the first fish-out-of-water, zeroto-hero story doesn’t give one free reign to regurgitate decades-old, exhausted movie tropes and rest on laurels while refusing to offer any original spectacle. After its first act, “John Carter” runs on autopilot, as does your brain. 2. Hitchcock If “The Raven” desecrates its subject, “Hitchcock” filets its eponymous auteur like a quivering Janet Leigh, reducing him to both grotesque monster and soap-opera-

sweet hubby. It’s hard to believe just how terrible Sacha Gervasi’s comic thriller is — a knee-jerk, dreadfully scripted slab of Oscar bait, whose wafer-thin provocation is quickly snuffed out by terribly saccharine uplift. Watering down the making of “Psycho” and gracelessly putting the spotlight on Hitch’s oversimplified marriage, this by-the-numbers misfire is condescending to a fault, turning a biopic of one of cinema’s greatest directors into something worthy of the subtitle “For Dummies.” 1. Bully These days, it seems all one needs is an issue and a camera to make a buzzworthy documentary, which stands poised to earn critical kudos just for being about something dire. Pushed by The Weinstein Co. as the nonfiction film of the moment, and capitalizing on every headline-grabbing opportunity (the campaign to lift the film’s R-rating made national news), “Bully” is by far the nadir of this artless trend, failing to accomplish anything beyond selling itself as a product. Directed with amateurish insensitivity by Lee Hirsch, who twists the knife with inexplicable shots like a tortured kid whose face is smeared with wing sauce, the movie squanders the opportunity to offer useful commentary on the modern bullying epidemic, offensively limiting its purview to a collection of Middle-America hicks and ending not with a presentation of useful solutions, but an advertisement for its still burgeoning grassroots foundation, information on which can be found on the advertised website. This is not the movie that’s going to initiate change to help your bullied child — it’s the one that’s going to give the green light to more useless, selfimportant docs that defeat their own supposed purposes. 9. Hick The fetishization of Chloë Grace Moretz, continues with this utterly pointless comingof-age road movie, which borrows from “Taxi Driver” and “The Wizard of Oz” for no discernible reason but to wink at the audience. Plotless and interest-free, it’s an insufferable ride that can’t end soon enough.

7. The Impossible Part horror film, part sticky-sweet sapfest, J.A. Bayona’s “The Impossible,” which recounts the plight of one family who survived the 2004 tsunami disaster, is as tonally incongruous as it is laughably insensitive, causing nausea with both gore and sentiment as it glorifies one lily-white clan above all others who lived through the terror. The fact-based story does nothing to help Bayona’s bad taste, which involves repurposing the same old disaster-movie formula, and giving this fateful event the Roland Emmerich treatment.

making the author a suspect, and then, the greatest asset to police. Cusack tries to give gravitas to literature’s dark prince, but all efforts are negated by this ludicrous production, which devalue’s Poe’s work with a stupid whodunit, and makes the grand, retrospective mistake of implying that he was a legend in his own time. Nevermore, indeed.

10. Compliance A divisive festival hit, this claustrophobic retelling of a real-life string of “strip search prank call scams” tricked many viewers into thinking it had true sociological importance, its what-would-you-do quandary emerging as a hollow talking point. But as it watches a restaurant manager blindly follow the phoned-in orders of a pervert posing as a cop, and dehumanizing an innocent female cashier in the process, “Compliance” becomes less and less a conversation piece than something altogether unwatchable — a sadistic lab-rat experiment and the feel-bad movie of the year.

implausible as it sounds. Made by women but regressively sexist, the film’s a feminist failure to boot.

n East Passyunk Crossing chef will merge his love for the Feast of the Seven Fishes and Bouillabaisse, a French seafood soup, through Dec. 30. Chef Marco DeCotiis of Noir, 1909 E. Passyunk Ave., offers his Seven Fish Bouillabaisse for $23 a bowl during the eatery’s 12 Days of Fishmas. “... [S]ourcing fresh fish at the Italian Market is the key to making this soup really special,” the Montreal native and son of Italian immigrants said. For more information, visit, noirphiladelphia.com. ave the cookies for Santa and introduce the youngsters to a different enticing option to satisfy their craving for sweets this holiday season. While it might not sound as appealing as St. Nick’s favorite snack, Kathleen Valle deems her Fried Dough creation as her grandchildren’s favorite Christmas Eve treat. After trying the resident of the 2600 block of Dudley Street’s traditional recipe, the children surely will have sugarplums dancing in their heads. SPR

The Farm and the Fisherman By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

n October, we instituted a new rating system. Four toques is the highest a restaurant can receive if it meets the finest standards. I found one. The Farm and Fisherman is a 30-seat BYOB owned by the husband-and-wife team of Josh and Colleen Lawler. Josh Lawler was the chef de cuisine at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, the ground-breaking New York restaurant and working farm from Chef Dan Barber, who spearheaded the farm-to-table movement. He met Coleen, a former sous chef at the Manhattan’s Picholine, at Drexel University. The room features light wood and tables set with white cloths and napkins. The soft lighting was perfect; I could actually read the menu and admire the food on my plate. The staff kept the pace of our dinner running smoothly. Keep in mind that Lawler adjusts his menu seasonably and sometimes daily. Warm Parker House rolls and creamy butter kept Edward and I content as we talked over the menu. We brought a bottle of Muscadet and a fine Bordeaux. Lawler had a warm touch with his cauliflower and mushroom salad ($11). He used trumpet, cremini and honey-cap mushrooms, sautéed in butter, which imparted a rich, heady woody flavor in contrast to the subtle cauliflower flavor, resulting in an appetizer that was vibrant and satisfying. capped the vegetables. Lawler’s instinctive flair continued with Spanish mackerel ($14) paired with tart Granny-Smith-apple slices, minced coriander, fennel and mint and infused with mustard oil, which married perfectly with mackerel and herbs. Sweetbreads ($14) have a mild flavor, and when properly done, they are seared crisp outside and remain creamy inside. Lawler hit the mark. He served them simply with some greens and cool, crisp radish slices. Handmade tagliatelle ($18) was another winning dish because a few ingredients were permitted to sing in harmony without fuss. Cubes of slightly salty Berkshire pork belly mingled effortlessly with the fresh pasta ribbons, slices of black truffle and a hint of Parmesan cheese. Several days before our dinner, I told Edward I was in the mood for venison. The culinary gods must have heard me. Lawler prepared one of the finest venison dishes ($34) I have ever tasted — a masterpiece of flavor and texture. My venison, topped with reduced pan juices, was medium-rare and so tender I could have cut it with a butter knife. Melt-in-your-mouth is relevant here. Late-fall is time for root vegetables and baby Brussels sprouts. Lawler added turnips, salsify, which has a mild artichoke-like flavor, some bacon for punch and baby sprouts, which were Restaurant Review:

charred and had a smoky flavor and aroma. I finished every bit on my plate. Edward and I have never tasted fennel pollen. It can be overwhelming. Lawler had a slight of hand with fennel pollencrusted pork rack ($26), which was seasoned and hit the hot pan, producing a beautiful flavorful crust on the pork. Small, roasted baby lettuce, along with black and Carolina gold rice, were included on the plate. We shared an apple tart ($8) with whipped cream, a light and sweet end to our meal. It can be rare when a restaurant develops a loyal following. It took several tries to book a table. During our dinner, every seat was taken. Our waiter knew his repeat = Very Good

No boarding passes are required to enjoy an internationally inspired Christmas feast of European delights. Phyllis Stein-Novack Food Columnist

F

or the past few weeks, I’ve been asking friends about their family Christmas dinners. Since Americans have roots in many nations, the family’s ethnic background often takes front and center in the holiday meal. Southern Italians feast on fish Christmas Eve but turn to turkey or ham on Christmas Day. My Greek friend Effie said duck with chestnut stuffing is not unusual on the Greek Christmas dinner table while those with British, Irish and Scottish roots turn to pork loin or a crown roast of pork. This year, you may wish to take a tour around the world for Christmas dinner. Last week, I made langoustine etouffe, a Louisiana dish, which was originally made with crayfish. I found frozen langoustine tails at Trader Joe’s and played with the recipe. Why not add it to your Christmas Eve fish feast? It also can be made with popcorn shrimp. Boneless duck breast is a favorite in our house. Its rich flavor plays off splendidly with any type of sauce or spiced fruit. Use the rendered duck fat to sauté potatoes or turnips and include them on the plate. Smoked Scottish salmon is served during the holidays throughout the United Kingdom. It is very expensive so why not make gravlax, the salt and sugar cured salmon which Swedes enjoy as an appetizer? It is a quick and easy recipe but must be made several days in advance.

■ Langoustine ■ or Popcorn Shrimp Etouffe

Ingredients:

1 large red bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 large yellow pepper, seeded and diced 1 large orange pepper, seeded and diced 1 large onion, diced 2 shallots, diced

4 ribs of celery, diced 4 fat garlic cloves, sliced Enough Canola oil to coat the bottom of a large pot 3 pounds langoustine tails or popcorn shrimp Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Cayenne pepper, to taste Pinch of dried thyme 2 large bay leaves 3 heaping tablespoons of flour 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter 2 cups of chicken stock 1 cup of dry white wine

Directions: Place all of the vegetables in a bowl and toss well. Heat the oil over medium-high. Add the vegetables and sauté them for about eight minutes. Add the langoustine tails or shrimp and sauté for about three minutes. Add the seasonings and toss well. Lower the heat to medium and sprinkle on the flour. Stir to coat well and insure the flour is cooked. Add the butter and stir until it dissolves. Add all of the remaining ingredients, bring to a boil, lower to simmer and cook for about 30 minutes. Serve over steamed rice. Serves four to six.

■ Seared Duck Breast ■

Ingredients:

3 8-ounce boneless duck breasts Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions: Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Score the fat on each duck breast. Season with the salt and pepper. Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat. Add the duck breast, fat side down and sear a few minutes on each side. Lower the heat to medium and cook for a few min-

utes more. Place the skillet in the oven and roast for about 10 minutes for medium-rare duck. Check for doneness as each oven is different. You may need to roast the duck for five more minutes. Let the duck rest for five minutes before slicing. Serves four to six.

■ Spiced Pear Compote ■

Ingredients:

6 Bosc pears, peeled, seeded and cut into small chunks 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter Kosher salt, to taste Ground cinnamon and ginger, to taste

Directions: Heat the butter over medium heat until it foams. Add the pears and sauté them for about five minutes. Season with the salt, ginger and cinnamon. Lower the heat to medium-low and allow the pears to cook for 30 minutes. The pears should retain a bit of crunch. Serves four to six.

■ Potatoes and Turnips ■ Sautéed in Duck Fat

Ingredients:

Rendered duck fat from the duck breasts 4 large Yukon gold potatoes, cut into cubes 4 large white turnips, peeled and cut into cubes Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions: Heat the duck fat over medium-high in the same cast-iron skillet used to sauté the

■ Gravlax ■

Ingredients:

1 3-pound salmon, head removed, crossed in half lengthwise 2 large bunches of fresh dill 1/3 cup of kosher salt 1/3 cup of sugar

Directions: Place half of the fish, skin-side down, in a glass dish. Pat the dill over the fish and sprinkle the rest of the ingredients on top. Top with the other half of the fish. Cover with aluminum foil and weigh down the fish using 2 28-ounce cans. Refrigerate for two to three days, turning the salmon and basting with the accumulated juices about twice a day. To serve, remove the salmon and place it on a serving platter. Scrape off the dill, salt and sugar. Pat dry with paper towels. Slice the salmon thinly on the diagonal. Serve as a first course with lemon wedges and crusty bread. Serves eight. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/food-anddrink/features.

I awake each morning to start a new day, but the pain of losing you never goes away. I go about things I have to do, and as the hours pass I think again of you. I want to call you and just hear your voice. Then I remember that I have no choice. The pain gets deeper as the days of on, I wish you were here for me to lean on. I miss all the little ways you showed you cared, for all the laughs and good times that we shared; you were my trusted confidante and best friend. I look at your smiling face in all my photo’s. Memories flood my mind as I touch the mementos. Sometimes memories bring comfort and make me smile, but there are times when grief takes over for a while. I love and miss you so much

Festive footwork A luminous holiday jaunt helped running clubs collect food for the hungry.

By Joseph Myers R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

Representatives from two running groups covered 3.5 miles in their annual trek. This year’s version included their first attempt to provide provisions to the needy. S ta f f P h o t o s b y G r e g B e z a n i s

end nearing, the Striders and their Fishtown allies elected to ensure that households can make more bountiful whatever holiday they observe. “We came here happy and now that we’ve built on that by helping Philabundance, let’s hit the streets,” Beer Runners founder David April said as his peers, many bundled to fend off a late autumn chill and others opting for shorts, clapped. “I’ll see everyone at the bar.” JUST BEFORE APRIL’S declaration, the levity picked up when runners doubling as reindeer arrived pulling a sleigh bearing Santa Claus. Not to be outdone by his

Christian companions, Fishtown’s Neil Brecher came dressed as Jesus, topping his outfit, quite literally, with a menorah hat. Heading west on Oregon Avenue as the run commenced, the nimble nighttime participants, many of whom have competed in notable local and national events, enjoyed conversation on topics such as their holiday plans, the Eagles’ wretched season and hopes for a joyous ’13, yet those matters trailed the libations as the dominant interest, with science supporting their cravings. April, who will mark the Beer Runners’ fifth anniversary tonight with another barbound trek, began his club, whose Facebook page lists 668 members, as an homage to Professor Manuel J. Castillo of the School of Medicine at Spain’s University of Granada, who proposed in ’07 that moderate amounts of beer can prove as effective as water for rehydration and recovery following exercise. “The professor is never far from our minds,” April said as he and his friends finished inspecting the 2700 block of South Colorado Street, one of seven brightly decorated blocks they included on their itinerary. As the clubs welcome runners of all abilities, last week’s gathering possessed a relaxed feel, and the laughter coming from the participants provided just the jolt Alfonso has lacked since his November termination. “I appreciate what these guys and girls are doing,” the Lower Moyamensing dweller said. “I’d definitely have a beer with them.” Had he followed them to their ultimate destination, Alfonso certainly would have received even more exposure to their gregariousness, as they celebrated their efforts with draft specials and more vivid lights. “We’ve become a close group of friends over the last few years,” Strider Elizabeth Coleman, a resident of the 200 block of Sigel Street, said. “It was such a pleasure to see the event grow so exponentially and successfully over that same time, from a handful of runners from the same neighborhood, Pennsport mostly, to an event of roughly 200 runners from all over the city and beyond.” SPR For more information, visit southphillystriders.com. from the American Sardine Bar, 1800 Federal St. “Behind their competitive exterior, we have so many people who just want to enhance their communities, too.” In seeking to establish a relationship with Philabundance, the Striders, with 252 members listed on their Facebook page, are courting a proven humanitarian. The region’s largest hunger relief organization, the 28-year-old company assists approximately 900,000 people at risk of hunger and malnutrition in nine Delaware Valley and four New Jersey counties, relying on its programs and unions with nearly 500 agencies to do so. It distributed 19 million pounds of food last year, and with 2012’s

his has been a rough 12 months for many people,” Larry Alfonso said Dec. 13 as he glimpsed nearly 200 runners at 16th Street and Oregon Avenue. “This time of year, though, I look for unexpected sources of joy, and what I’m seeing tonight will denitely be among them.” Out for an evening stroll that included picking up takeout food, the recently unemployed resident of the 2500 block of South Jessup Street had his spirits lifted, as the merry meanderers, members of the South Philly Striders and the Fishtown Beer Runners, united for their sixth holiday lights run, bedecking themselves in festive attire to cover a 3.5-mile course complete with copiously decorated streets. They added novelty to their revelry, donating 356 pounds of goods to assist the hunger elimination mission of Philabundance, 3616 S. Galloway St. “We love any chance to improve our camaraderie with one another and our neighbors at large and count on this run to bring on a few laughs, with the bonus being the chance to help the less fortunate,” Striders’ co-founder Kathy O’Neill, with daughters Emma, 13, and Anna, 10, along to collect canned goods and blare support, said as fellow enthusiasts congregated at the Broad Street and Oregon Avenue starting point. The resident of the 200 block of Wharton Street began the club six years ago, using her recreational running infatuation and a strengh-in-numbers approach to attract members, who meet Tuesday and Saturday mornings, with an optional Thursday a.m. journey, at Front and South streets and Wednesday nights in Old City. Though many Striders call Pennsport home, their group has acquired geographic diversity, with participants coming from locations such as New Jersey and West Chester, and contains highly competitive and compassionate individuals, according to member Leonard DeProspo. “Seeing this sort of altruism is always touching,” the resident of the 200 block of South Street and Philabundance volunteer said before his colleagues found their feet leading them through Marconi, Lower Moyamensing, East Passyunk Crossing, Passyunk Square and Point Breeze, where they replenished themselves with libations
