Sunday reflections To the Editor: I must have to agree that there is a certain and incomparable feel about Sundays that is much different from all of the other days of the week. I don’t know why it is, but you just know it’s Sunday. It used to be the smell that wafted throughout the house, especially your bedroom, of mom’s gravy (tomato sauce) with the accompanying of the sausage and meatballs joyfully frolicking in the swarm of the tomato gravy. It will soon be transferred into the bigger pot with the ravioli. Then there was the spread on the floor of the Sunday comics that added to that unmistakable feel of Sunday morning at home. But as I have mentioned in the past, it is a horribly sad time because there is no more family left,

and all of my friends have departed. The loneliness is excruciating. God in heaven, how I miss and long for my family, and all of my friends. To all of you, love your family and always hold them dear and close. The alternative is indeed crushing. My heart truly goes out to all of you and your loving family and friends. he Philadelphia Police Department announced Tuesday they are seeking leads in determining who burglarized the 3200-block-of-Pietro-Way home, located in The Reserves section of Packer Park, belonging to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson between Jan. 6 and 10. Law enforcement officials know that a safe in the abode suffered damage and that at least $250,000 in cash and jewelry are missing, Officer Christine O’Brien of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. Decorative disaster Surveillance video captured two males vandalizing a Hawthorne establishment’s exterior and delivery van. At 1:34 a.m. Surveillance Video Jan. 9, the men approached Isgro Pastries, 1009 Christian St., with the first applying spray paint to the bakery’s front window as his accomplice served as a lookout, police said. Older adults scammed

Authorities busted a man in Grays Ferry after he pointed a rifle at them. While serving a warrant on behalf of the Attorney General’s Office at 4:15 p.m. Monday, a police officer in the area of the 1500 block of South Corlies Street observed a male walking west with the barrel of a rifle protruding from his jacket, Officer Christine O’Brien of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. Identifying himself after exiting his vehicle, the law enforcement figure discharged his Glock after the other man allegedly pointed the rifle at him. No shots hit the individual, who reportedly fled on foot and was lost in the area of the 3000 block of Tasker Street. Uniformed officers on the 2600 block of Dickinson Street later apprehended the male, whose name remains unreleased. Authorities retrieved a lever action, Winchester rifle at the original location. While pursuing the supposed weapon wielder, a special agent operating an unmarked police vehicle was involved in an auto accident at Tasker and Corlies streets. He sustained minor injuries, declining treatment for his legs and hands. The struck automobile contained two males, who received treatment at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Internal Affairs and the District Attorney’s Office are investigating and reviewing both.

Two ne’er-do-wells pulled off a home robbery of a pair of Girard Estate residents Friday. Hearing a knock on her door on the 2500 block of South 20th St. at 1:30 p.m., the first complainant encountered two men who claimed to be Philadelphia Water Department workers, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. They informed her the block had a problem with water mixing with gas, with the first walking to the basement with her, leaving the second with the other occupant. The first imposter asked her to turn on the washing machine and water, with the experiment lasting as long as 15 minutes before the second resident joined them, giving the other phony individual unsupervised time in the home. Another 10 minutes passed before the basement-bound figures returned to the first floor, with the second offender waiting in the kitchen. The would-be employees instructed them to leave their water running and told them they would return shortly to check the status, Tolliver said. Almost 15 minutes later, the residents discovered the second-floor bedroom safe was pried open. They determined they were missing $2,500, with $500 more absent from two drawers in the same bedroom, as well as a gold bracelet and ring.

Cash shortage Police are hoping surveillance footage can help them to nab a Point Breeze bank robber. At 10 a.m. Surveillance Photo Monday, the depicted individual entered the First Trust Bank, 1332 Point Breeze Ave., and gave the teller a threatening note, authorities said. He received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled south on 21st Street from Reed Street. Gas store assault A Hawthorne-based gas station attack left an employee injured last week.

At 11:43 a.m. Jan. 9, an unknown male entered the Sunoco Gas station, 801 S. Broad St., and quickly departed without paying for a Red Bull Energy Drink, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The complainant said he returned to the site perhaps 15 minutes later yet could not gain entry due to his locking the front door. The worker, however, needed to open the establishment to receive a delivery a few minutes later, with the offender bursting into the business and punching him several times in the face before inflicting a knife wound under his right eye, Tolliver said. An unknown customer grabbed the intruder’s arm to prevent more damage, with the employee scampering to a secured cashier area and locking the front door. Another hire called authorities, with both watching the offender kick the door several time, fleeing on foot once his kicks succeeded and heading eastbound on Catharine Street. The victim, who received transport to Pennsylvania Hospital for bumps and bruises on his head and the aforementioned gash, described the attacker as black, 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds; having a dark complexion; missing teeth; wearing a red jacket, matching yellow pants and shoes and carrying a back pack and a stuffed animal. Eatery compromised Detectives have surveillance video as their primary aid in bringing to justice a man who damaged and robbed Hawthornes Cafe, 738 S. 11th St., Sunday. At 5:11 a.m., authorities converged on the site and observed a shattered front glass door, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Reviewing footage, they determined a masked offender had thrown a red, square brick through the door to proceed to the register area. The clip shows him using various items to open the container, which he ended up fleeing with, Tolliver said. Authorities recovered it on the 700 block of South Jessup Street, with approximately $300 missing. The unavailable surveillance footage shows a man of an unknown race wearing a dark-colored mask, a long jacket and one glove. No information on his height, weight or approximate age were available. Police arrested a man for his alleged assault on a fellow male in Lower Moyamensing. At 1:50 a.m. Sunday, officials responded to a call of a person with a gun on the 800 block of Jackson Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. They located an unconscious man with blood emanating from a head wound and had him transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received treatment for severe brain trauma. Law enforcement workers returned to the facility at 11 a.m., where a witness stated she had seen him struck with a bottle and identified the aggressor as TJ Em, Tolliver said. They located the 19-year-old resident of the 2000 block of South Fifth Street on the 400 block of Tasker Street and arrested him, charging him with two counts of assault, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person. He had not posted his $100,000 bail as of press time and awaits a Jan. 28 preliminary hearing.

New Courtyard at The Navy Yard An international hotel brand welcomed its first overnight guests last week as the urban campus’ newest addition. n By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

he doors of the brand new Courtyard Marriott South at The Navy Yard, 1001 Intrepid Ave., opened 5 p.m Jan. 7th. julia’s wish continued from page 1 CHOP, she looks forward to the pageantry while her mother simply finds herself grateful for more days with her daughter. “She’s been through so much,” Grace Parmisciano said. “Our faith and support from so many people have pulled us through.” The matriarch made a connection with the Blue Bell-located Make-A-Wish Foundation representatives through a CHOP child life specialist. Having received her new organ Nov. 22, ’11, Julia left the hospital Dec. 2, with her parent completing an application a short time later. Their clan learned the young fighter would earn placement on a waiting list for her request’s fulfillment, with their delay likely lasting into ’15. Certainly blessed with patience because of their ordeal, they recently reveled when hearing Julia would join other courageous youths at the show. “She is a smart kid,” President and CEO Dennis Heron said of Julia’s decision to visit a warm climate and desire to encounter entertainment icons. “We hope she has a wonderful time and love that our allies, as always, are enthused about making every child’s experience life-altering.” Being that her previous state proved lifethreatening, Julia and her kin aim to honor Heron’s hopes and continue to forge affinity for having one another as their ultimate source of strength. They have needed to be resilient since doctors diagnosed then-4month-old Julia with dilated cardiomyopathy, which hinders the pumping of blood and weakens and enlarges one’s heart. Drama mostly spared the family, with the maturing girl leading an active life that included involvement in multiple sports while an Epiphany student. Three months after an echocardiogram showed her affliction had worsened, she eventually went into cardiac arrest following a May 18, ’11 incident at her alma mater. “It was definitely tough to have to stop doing so much of what I loved, but I knew I had to stay strong,” the teenager said. “My family has been there for me so much, so I’m very fortunate.” The youngster feels so enamored with her relatives, including father Francesco, brother Joseph and sister Francesca, that she pondered petitioning for an excursion to Hawaii. Her mother, however, wanted her to choose something deeply personal. “Music played such a big role in her recovery that I wanted her to stick with it,” Grace Parmisciano said of her descendant, who counts pop star Selena Gomez, with whom she performed a piece at CHOP during the July 15, ’11 dedication of The Voice multimedia center, as her favorite artist. “It’s great that she’s going to get the

“It’s an impressive number,” Heron said. “We have to keep in mind, though, that the most important wish is the next one. Maybe there will come a day when we won’t need to do this, when diseases, afflictions and infirmities will stop penetrating families’ lives.” Conflict has remained distant from the Parmisciano bunch since Julia returned to her Lower Moyamensing abode, with her heart functioning perfectly following two 2012 bouts with mild rejection. She has resumed her active lifestyle and serves as a cheerleader for the basketball and football squads at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., where she is a sophomore. Enjoying conversation with her contemporaries as adults crowded around to talk with her, the center of attention commended Make-A-Wish for its intervention. “They do so many things for so many kids, and it’s just amazing,” she said. A Passyunk Square actress lands the role of a lifetime with Arden’s Children’s Theater ■ By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

t’s almost as if Louis Sachar had Rachel Camp in mind when he created Mrs. Jewls, the kind teacher in his peculiarly charming series of novels for children. There are certainly strange things afoot in his 30-story schoolhouse, but there’s nothing off-putting about Camp’s enthusiasm for igniting youngsters’ creative imaginations. Her lead role in the Arden Theater’s production of “Sideways Stories from Wayside School” is a perfect fit. Even when the chalkboard’s on the ceiling and the door’s in the ground, Camp imbues her classroom with a spirited celebration of one of life’s greatest gifts: Learning. The resident of the 1200 block of Dickinson Street has been putting in many hours at the Old City mainstay. Not only will she star in this production’s 99 performances through Feb. 15, but she’s been working with children through the Arden’s Drama School, namely the Kids’ Crew program, and infecting artistic youths with the acting bug. She’s also an integral part of her sister-in-law’s ZoomDance, Ninth and Federal streets, leading classes that interpret books they read through dance. “I love kids,” she gushed. “I think I’d be happy as just an actor, but I prefer actor-teacher.” Good thing she loves it, because sometimes she and her peers are practically living at that theater. LIFESTYLES dren’s theater program is no joke, as she stressed, it’s taken just as seriously as any other staged performance. “The unique thing about the Arden is that they put the same resources into their children’s programming as their regular, more adult productions,” Camp said. “It’s very important to me, and they take it very seriously.” The productions aimed at and crafted for youths is one of Arden’s biggest boons. The tickets sell and these eager young minds are pretty much the best audience an actor could ask for. Even at 10 a.m., when they’re finally sitting in a seat, they’re more than eager to let Camp transport them to foreign kingdoms or distant lands. “They’re so excited to be out of school and to see real live magic on stage,” she said. “For some of them, a lot of them, it’s their first time coming to the theater, to see real humans performing acts they’d never imagined.” The two-hour performances run for 10 weeks at a nine- or 10-show-a-week pace. During the holidays, she pulled out three performances a day. These are not run-of-the-mill performances either. They always entail a Q&A and a meet-and-greet session. But Camp seems to breeze through it all, stoked by the enthusiasm of her audiences.

“They boo for characters who are villains and cheer loudly for heroes. It’s something very visceral,” she explained. “They are fearless when it comes to their reactions — they have no filter.” Camp said the questions are outstanding and always manage to perpetuate her passion for exactly this line of work. And the Arden doesn’t wish to deceive; the actors are encouraged to explain and illustrate the illusions. “Dozens of hands immediately go up: How’d you DO that?” she elaborated. She ends up regularly explaining why there’s only five students on stage as opposed to 30, or how Mrs. Gorf turns her students into apples when they answer incorrectly, or why it makes sense that she’s teaching students who are, technically, older than her. THE KING OF Prussia native and Montclair State University grad has also been involved in a slew of camps, consortiums, and outreach efforts. Two such programs are directing Upper Marion Townhip’s fifth- to 11th-graders in “Into The Woods, Jr.,” and teaching classes within Norristown’s Theatre Horizon Autism Drama Program. In 2011, she won a Barrymore Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her turn in “The 25th Annual Putnam

moments of “The Borrowers,” “Robin Hood,” “Cinderella” and “The Flea and the Professor.” Part of the program is meeting with kids over the course of four weeks, getting them to tell stories or pretend characters. It’s in these short residencies that the truly magical potential for pulling tots out their shells and getting them to develop, as she called it, “a creative intelligence” appears. “There’s generally one kid per classroom that is incredibly shy and withdrawn and sort of doesn’t seem like the kind who’d be excited to get up and do something silly or create a character,” she said. “By the fourth class, it’s that kid that’s the most excited to perform and say things that are completely unexpected and brilliant.” When the class ends, it’s rarely the last Camp hears of these budding thespians. They’re very quick to write letters of love and thanks, often from unexpected sources. “The first kid that was like that in my class, she wrote ‘You changed my life, you made me believe in myself, you inspired me to write stories.’ From a girl who’d never said a word in class,” Camp recalled. County Spelling Bee.” The boundless actress is trained in musical theater, but she’s not just an actor who works with kids. The moment when she realized she was on the perfect path came in her turn as Natalie in “Next to Normal.” The Arden’s fall ’12 run of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical about bipolar disorder let her explore all the depths of acting that she’s always craved. “As much as I love children’s theater, as much as I love musical comedy, the thing that attracts me to theater is complicated stories; stories with darkness and conflict,” she articulated. “Things that bring out the turmoil of the human race. And ‘Next To Normal’ was the perfect example of a show where I got to sing and work with an amazing cast and director.” To say Camp is capable of great breadth in her field, it seems, is an understatement. Like a truly gifted and expressive performer, she can turn on a dime from animated and physical to thoughtful and still. “To perform something with that kind of intensity and complex nature — I loved it, I loved every second of it,” she said. “Empathy is probably my favorite thing about theater. Getting to step into someone else’s shoes and hopefully the audience will step into them with you.” With the Arden school, she’s run through

What if the deficit isn’t the problem?

e have all heard the question, “If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, has it really made a sound?” I’m not big on philosophical questions, but here’s a fact based question, the answer to which explains why we Americans are so vulnerable to BS solutions to our everyday problems. Answer this question for me: Since 2009, the year when Barack Obama first took office, has the federal deficit gone up or down? According to a poll cited on MSN.com last week, 71 percent of Americans think the deficit has gone up. Of those 71 percent, about 88 percent of folks who identify themselves as Republicans believe the deficit has gone up (no indication of how many of them get their news solely from FOX). The reality is that since Obama first took office, the federal deficit has gone DOWN, continues to go down as this column is written, and is predicted to keep going down for the foreseeable future. Based on percentage of Gross National Product, the budget deficit has actually been cut in half. But nobody knows it or practically nobody. Let me hasten to add that these figures haven’t been compiled by the Democratic National Committee, they come straight out of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, a favorite source of conservatives when the stats represent bad news. Please let this fact sink in because if the federal budget isn’t spinning crazily out of control, what the hell are we doing making the reduction of the deficit our number one priority while people are out of work? Didn’t Congress just cut off temporary emergency unemployment benefits? The conservative argument is simply when you make the unemployed desperate for income, they will find work. The idea is rooted in the belief that by and large, those out of work are the “takers” and not really interested in finding a job. That argument seems plausible until you find out there are almost three unemployed people looking for work for every job opening. Unfortunately, I get the feeling the Public is as unaware of that fact as they are about the federal deficit falling. If all of this were just part of an exercise in philosophy class like the tree falling in the forest, it wouldn’t be a big deal. We could all laugh it off and go back to wondering when Princess Kate will get preg-

nant again. And please, this disconnect isn’t about Obama and his legacy. Please. Leave your politics at the door on this one. There are people out of work and families in need who depend on our getting our facts in order so that public policy solutions fit the actual problem. I realize that the Christmas season is over and it is customary to not worry about the hungry until Thanksgiving rolls around again, but maybe our national psyche needs an overhaul. You see, because most of us have bought into the false idea that our number one national priority is to reduce the deficit, we are imposing needless pain on those Americans who are suffering hard times. Instead of worrying about spending, we should be worrying about unemployment. Americans out of work are our biggest problem, not the myth that the deficit is ballooning. What would happen if we understood the really serious problem in America? We would be spending money not cutting spending. Instead of falling for the myth that the stimulus didn’t work, we would understand that the stimulus worked, it just wasn’t big enough. What we need is another stimulus. I realize for some of you the idea of the government spending on another stimulus package is as crazy as thinking that the earth is more than 6,000 years old. Bear with me. Let’s begin with reinstating temporary emergency unemployment benefits. This would not only alleviate the hardship on those out of work, it would put more money back into the economy. Next let’s use a new stimulus to restore cuts to hire back teachers, cops and firemen. I can hear the howls that public sector jobs don’t count for anything, you need private sector jobs. First off, if you think public sector jobs don’t count for anything then the next time your kid’s favorite teacher gets laid off or you can’t find a cop or get a fire engine to put out the fire in your house, call Sean Hannity. And why is it we think that folks who get their jobs back — public or private — don’t spend money like everybody else. See, here’s where the dirty little secret comes in. If you want companies to start hiring again, you need employed folks to spend money on their products. Conservatives would have you believe that companies aren’t hiring because they’re not sure what new taxes may be placed on them by those big, bad socialists in Washington. Actually the big firms are sitting on a boatload of money waiting for people to start buying their products again. When Americans are employed, they will buy that dishwasher they’ve needed, but couldn’t afford because they were out of work. When they start buying, companies will start hiring. It’s the beauty of capitalism. All we have to do is get our heads out of our butts and realize the federal deficit is going down. Really it is. Questionable ‘Survivor’ n By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

ost of the news surrounding “Lone Survivor,” a fact-based war film adapted from Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell’s book, has been inflammatory. While promoting the movie, Mark Wahlberg, who portrays Luttrell, lashed out at Tom Cruise for comparing acting to fighting in Afghanistan. Upon the film’s release, critics who disliked it were slammed with “anti-American” insults. And just last week, a texter in one of the film’s screenings was shot to death. This all may be coincidental, but it’s not quite unrelated. “Lone Survivor” seems to have inspired the type of ostensibly patriotic, but fundamentally ugly, actions that reflect some of the worst aspects of Americans. Set in 2005, Luttrell’s story focuses on the failed Operation Red Wings mission, wherein he and three other SEALs were caught in a grisly firefight with Taliban soldiers. Unfolding in the woods of Afghan mountains, the movie, directed by Peter Berg, is among the most violent I’ve ever seen, ripping Wahlberg and company to shreds until only the title character walks out alive. As a study of what the human body can withstand, “Lone Survivor,” however excruciating to watch, is at least fascinating. But as a political statement, it’s an evidently dangerous piece of work, promoting jingoism and a certain militaristic mentality that yields more hate than it does pride in brotherhood or heroism. It’s one thing to acknowledge America as a democratic superpower, and the Taliban as fierce extremists from whom folks should protect themselves. It’s quite another to choose, as a filmmaker, to have your first shot of the antagonist involve his

conducting of a beheading, and the declaration of him as “the bad guy.” There is no shading here, no exploration of anything beyond the stereotypical, bro-ish psyche of the U.S. male soldier. Furthermore, Berg ultimately dishonors these SEALs by making them part of a masochistic display, which, again, is less politically honorable as it is superficially volatile. If only “Lone Survivor” had taken a cue from “Captain Phillips,” which also dealt with Americans facing down foreign terrorists, but found a balance between bravery and bloodsport.

ome may be reading this week’s recipe and asking, “Why spend the time slaving over a hot stove when there is a wide variety of flavors available for purchase at the local supermarket?” Well, for some like Jim Lyons, of the 1000 block of South Chadwick Street, the extra time and energy is well worth it when desiring endless spoonfuls of his Stove Top Rice Pudding. Besides, once those recent purchases find their way to a trash can, someone in the house will likely shout: “We are out of pudding!” Guess who’s going back to the store. SPR

in town. We are familiar with those malty kind of plastic looking hot cakes some diners pass off as the real deal. You can get any kind your heart desires. Chocolate chip ones have become favorites of ours since we first tasted them at the Hershey Hotel. Porto’s version ($10) consisted of three large, perfectly prepared, piping hot golden brown pancakes dusted with confectioners’ sugar. They were light and fluffy and certainly homemade. A scattering of berries was included, which was a nice surprise. Edward became hooked on scrapple ever since he fell for it at Kraftwork last year. Porto’s was well-seasoned and thinly sliced. Unfortunately, my omelettes were just average. The chef did not whip the eggs properly. When they’re are beaten, no white should be visible. I ordered a cheese omelette made with Saint George, a cheese our server advised was a bit more sharp than sharp cheddar. My piping hot item was a bit overcooked. Although it was puffy, the outside was brown and not a glistening golden yellow. A side of thick slab of bacon ($3) was crisp and free of grease. I also liked the Jewish rye toast that I slathered with soft butter. Oven roasted potatoes tossed with roasted peppers and onions came with my brunch. As I said, the staff at Porto has to be the nicest one will find anywhere in the city. A gentleman next to me, who was reading the Talmud, lives in the neighborhood and told us he eats brunch there every Sunday. That evening, I looked forward to the caldo verde. I added a bit more stock to the pot and found the soup to be tasty, well-seasoned and comforting. Porto serves an inexpensive brunch, Restaurant Review:

aldo verde is the national soup of Portugal. It is made with shredded kale, potatoes, onions and sausages. I never heard of it until I received a copy of the “Food of Portugal” by Jean Anderson many years ago. At that time, it was the only cookbook on Portuguese cuisine published in English. I heard about a new breakfast/lunch/ brunch restaurant called Porto, and was pleasantly surprised to find this famous soup on the menu. Although I could eat a bowl of it at 11 a.m., I decided to take some home and see if this caldo verde would transport me to Portugal. Porto is located at 11th and Wharton streets. It fills the niche for those who hunger for pancakes and eggs on cold winter weekends. The sign still reads luncheonette, a marvelous word from my childhood that fills me with memories of inexpensive burgers or grilled cheese. This was the location of Carman’s Country Kitchen, a funky place run by an eccentric woman with an attitude. The property retains the tin ceiling, old-fashioned cash register and is painted in sunny greens and yellows. The staff is about the nicest one will find anywhere. There are only about 18 seats, and when Edward and I arrived, we were fortunate to get the only open table. All through brunch there was a steady stream of regulars, which is a good sign. Steaming mugs of La Colombe coffee ($2) were served in pretty yellow, green or brick-colored mugs. There are blackboard specials as well. Porto serves some of the best pancakes

Mike’s career spanned many years at Bryers Ice Cream, and most recently Nationwide Insurance Company. Mike was very dedicated to all his family and friends. He was an inspiration, and will be eternally missed and remembered by all who knew him. Mike enjoyed; sports, the shore, working out, music, cars and most of all, he cherished time with his family and friends. He coached his children’s sport teams, and participated in prayer groups over the years. He was a man of faith and principle and set a positive example for many. He also served as a Eucharist Minister prior to becoming ill. Mike is survived by his son Andrew Gallo, Daughter Alexa Gallo, wife of 16years, Linda Gallo. Son of Vincent J. Gallo and the late Rita (Ferullo) Gallo. Anwar Epps and the Palumbo Griffins are looking to orchestrate their program’s best season. the scoring bug in the second frame along with a serious case of grab-every-rebound syndrome, garnering seven points and five misses to reverse the team’s poor firstquarter rebounding display. The home club reached intermission with a 27-22 lead, with Epps leading the attack with 15 points. “Coach pretty much gives me the green light when I have the ball,” he said. “I just have to commit to play great defense, and that’s something we all love doing.” Offensive versatility and defensive diligence have guided Palumbo for most of the season and helped the team to make the most of its entrance into late December’s West Side Winter Classic. The Griffins knocked off The High School of the Future in their tournament opener, dumped host West Philadelphia High School and collected the crown by defeating Robeson High School, with Epps averaging 23 points in the set of triumphs. “That was a big step in becoming a better team,” the 5-foot-9 sniper said. “We wanted to keep that up in January because we

know how important league games are.” The Griffins slumped to a 68-52 loss to Kensington Jan. 2 but rebounded Jan. 6 and 7 with road triumphs against World Communications and Mastery South to put themselves back in the divisional mix. Though the Raptors entered winless in league play, nobody, least of all Chau, underestimated the visitors. “We’re always looking to get better,” the 6-foot-4 lane clogger said of looking to top last year’s gains, which featured the school’s first playoff victory. “I think it went well today.” The resident of Ninth Street and Snyder Avenue continued his scoring clinic in the third quarter, depositing three of Palumbo’s five field goals and played strong defense to limit the Raptors to weak perimeter shots. Yet to receive solid looks from colleges, the Lower Moyamensing dweller showed that scouts should further inspect his frame and brain, executing agility and smarts to take Palumbo’s lead

to 37-31 entering the final quarter. A physical fourth saw the teams make many visits to the lane to exchange deuces. Chau proved a champion of the glass, putting back three Epps misses for buckets. “He’s definitely someone we’ll need to come through if we want to progress,” Schneider said of preparing his charges for the privilege of being involved in February contests. “Like all of us, he’s motivated to improve.” Epps, who has already begun to wade in the waters of college selection, considers regular-season wins fantastic as they of course lead to postseason appearances but wants livelier celebrations to be Palumbo’s come the playoffs. “We definitely don’t want just to match what they did last year,” he said of the program’s history makers. “We want more.” In Tuesday’s trip to New Media, the Griffins won 48-47. The metaphor has proven successful for his Hawthorne-based athletes, especially so for junior guard Anwar Epps, who has engaged in a literal trek in his first Public League campaign. Behind 22 points from the sharpshooter, the host Griffins edged the Randolph Raptors 50-43 Jan. 9 in a Division-D clash. “I’m looking to bring leadership and take us as far as possible, maybe to a state championship,” the 17-year-old said following his club’s ninth victory and fifth divisional triumph. “In this system, we look out for one another, and if we keep doing so, we can definitely make some noise.” The Overbrook Park inhabitant has become the leading marksman for the thriving squad, the same role he ascended to last year for West Catholic. Because of family matters and the influence of cousin Shafi Meachum, another junior contributor for Schneider, he left the parochial institution and has become a blessing for the coach and his teammates. “It’s been great to witness his commitment,” Schneider, a software company employee whose basketball background includes stints with the Center Citysituated De La Salle in Towne and the West Philly-based Concerned Parents Network Amateur Athletic Union outfit, said. “He’s been a big part of our ‘One family’ theme and has definitely helped us to have good chemistry.” “The game seems faster now that I’m in a public school,” Epps, whose childhood nickname, “The Bomb,” reflected his penchant for bursting toward the bucket, said. “That definitely keeps me enthused and ready to run.” The agile figure seemed like a blur to the guests early on, as he routinely registered quality shots.
