t took a little while for it to come together. But now, they are pretty much inseparable. Aaron Dixon, Shymar Wiggins and Jamire Evans all met just a few years ago at South Philadelphia High School. Arriving from different neighborhoods, they were introduced to each other on the basketball court. Competitive fire took over. But eventually they saw great potential in each other. “We had to calm Shymar down a bit,” Dixon, the Rams’ senior power forward, recalled with a laugh. “He had some anger issues. But even though I didn’t know him that well, I still came over and talked to him.” Once the egos were curbed, the three talented hoops players quickly became great friends. “By far, these two are my best friends,” said Wiggins, the 6-foot-6 senior center, who averages a double-double for the Rams. “I talk to them every day.” It’s not just on the court. The three amigos spend just about all their free time together, whether it’s playing recreational basketball, working out in the gym, shooting pool or just hanging out. “We go to open gyms on weekends and try to link up,” said Evans, an unselfish passer who plays both strong forward and shooting guard. “We have fun together as friends and as teammates.” It’s that type of chemistry that has coach Thomas Terry smiling, as he knows his senior captains will lead the way. The skill always seems to be in the pipeline when it comes to the South Philadelphia basketball program, having won the City Public title 16 times. But it takes a little more than pure talent to get the job done when the stakes are high. See SPHS, page 8>>

ake way for this big-headed goofball, Bazooka will launch his way straight to your heart! Bazooka is one of the most easy going dogs we have had the pleasure to encounter. His good manners and sweet-natured personality make it hard to believe he was found on the city streets. At the perfect age of 6, Bazooka is full of energy and enthusiasm! He is an incredibly loyal companion and a constant source of entertainment. While he can keep himself busy with toys of any kind, his one true love is the tennis ball, which he will happily chase for hours, triumphantly carrying two in his mouth at a time. Bazooka enjoys morning jogs and outdoor adventures, but also knows how to settle down for relaxed couch time at the end of a fun day. He will be a great fit for an active, fun-loving home with older kids who are comfortable with large dogs. Another pup to fetch with would be a plus! Hang

E D I TO R I A L C A RTO O N

in there I

t’s 29 days since I wished you a “Happy New Year.” Are you happy yet? Me? I’m tired of 2020 already. Face it. Happy New Year greetings just don’t work. So, let’s agree to stop wishing each other a Happy New Year, because where’s the “Happy?” You show me a person who’s happy in 2020, and I’ll show you a person who still thinks Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston are getting back together. We should ditch the optimism. Next year, on Jan. 1, I’ll greet everybody with, “Hang in there.” How can anybody be happy about 2020. OK. OK. OK. I AM happy for former Eagles receiver and friend Harold Carmichael, who’s going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Finally. But you think it’s so great being in Canton, Ohio in August for the ceremony? Harold – gentleman that he is, will thank everybody who voted for him. If I were inducted, I’d open my acceptance speech with, “What took you so long?” I am also happy that former Eagles coach Andy Reid is taking Kansas City to the Super Bowl. Maybe this time, he’ll win it. Andy’s a nice man. He deserves it just for having to put up with Angelo Cataldi all those years he (Reid, not Cataldi) was coaching the Eagles. My wife Fran won’t let me listen to Cataldi until he clears his nasal passages. When I told her how much Angelo earns, she hid my Allegra and prayed I got a head cold. Once you put aside Carmichael and Reid, there’s nothing yet in 2020 to be cheerful about. January got off to a bad start with the Mummers Parade. I write a column defending the Mummers from the parade haters, and some mook decides to wear black face. I don’t buy his excuse, either, that he was just impersonating Al Jolson. What’s he doing next year, wearing a white sheet and claiming he’s impersonating Casper the Friendly Ghost? President Clueless ordered a hit on Soleimani in Iraq. Soleimani was picnicking or whatever it is terrorists do in their leisure hours. Iraq, being a sovereign nation, is understandably ticked off. Trump can’t understand that, possibly because he frequently confuses Iraq and Iran and forgets which one we have troops in. Don’t blame Trump. See CARDELLA, page 9>>

LE T TERS TO THE EDITOR Head Start Action Committee responds to Cardella column Since September 2019, the Head Start Action Committee has been working to reverse the deplorable decision by the Columbia Child Development Program to discontinue Head Start services in Sullivan County, as referenced in a Dec. 4 article published in your paper. After meeting on Jan. 9, HSAC submitted a detailed report to the Region 3 Office in Philadelphia requesting the facility continue being funded under the grant application HHS-2020-ACF-OHS- CH-R03-1741, Head Start and/or Early Head Start Grantee – Columbia and Sullivan Counties, Pennsylvania. This report, which includes a Child Care Assessment Survey, Reach and Risk Level statistics, and an evaluation of CCDP’s representation of the county over the last three years, not only bolsters the center’s argument for continued service, but effectively refutes a CCDP Community Assessment that they say forced their decision to terminate the

facility. Yet despite the overwhelming evidence, and the consistency at which HSAC members and local officials have repeatedly tried contacting Region 3 for remedy, no response by the agency has been given. Should the facility close in June as scheduled, scores of area children won’t have access to preschool for the 2020 school year – and Sullivan County will have the dubious distinction of being the only county in the state of Pennsylvania without a Head Start option. HSAC is a 137-member nonprofit consisting of concerned parents and community leaders hoping to find an amicable solution so our children, now and in the future, will have access to quality preschool in this mountainous, rural region of north central Pa. We’ve been associated with CCDP for nearly 40 years, a relationship we believed was beneficial to both. Their decision to terminate this partnership without cause or notice has sent shockwaves through the community; and, with CCDP’s new facility and cost increases, the decision to discontinue Head Start in this community isn’t based

on the needs of the children and families who depend on the program, but is, sadly, purely financial in motive – and a clear violation of the 2007 Head Start for Readiness Statute, in our opinion. We implore Region 3 to acknowledge our request, and consider the overwhelming evidence outlined in our report. Why no one at Region 3 has contacted us is unbelievable; why the CCDP funding application continues without investigation is atrocious. Rob DeFeo President, HSAC

Local photographer’s ‘pet’ project culminates in book By Mark Zimmaro SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

K

risten Kidd would like nothing more than to give back to local dog rescues. Kidd, known for her photography in the Philadelphia area, started the Women’s Best Friend Project a year ago, creating a book and telling the story of women who formed special bonds with their four-legged friends, often times at breaking points of their lives. The Women’s Best Friend coffee table book was born last January, showcasing Kidd’s photography and featuring women with their canine companions. A two-year project of interviewing and photographing women and their dogs inspired Kidd to tell their stories and support local animal shelters and rescues.

Fiedler touts asbestos removal in state budget State Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler is expressing optimism in response to news that Gov. Tom Wolf will be proposing a budget with “significant resources” for asbestos removal and toxin cleanup in school buildings. Wolf previously sent about $12 million in aid to Philadelphia, but Fiedler said the crisis remains substantial and affects students statewide. She has introduced legislation that outlines $125 million in emergency funding to schools across the state with exposed asbestos, lead paint and crumbling buildings. Fiedler said, “Right now, our educators and students are in the middle of a public health emergency. It is a moral outrage that the toxic conditions continue in our schools. Every single Pennsylvania student, educator and school staff member deserves a healthy and safe school building. I’m glad the governor plans to prioritize funding in his budget. But our coalition of students, parents, educators, staff unions, faith leaders and community advocates won’t rest

“Hearing these really powerful, moving stories for two years, I knew there was something there,” Kidd said. “I knew it was something important that people needed to hear, particularly something other women needed to hear.” Kidd raised more than $7,000 through book sales and donated all of it to Harley’s Haven Dog Rescue in Perkasie, Bucks County. “It was a really fun moment being able to hand over the money to them and be like, guys, check it out. Look what we did,” Kidd said. “And that’s what we were going for.” Kidd has started working on Volume 2, which expects to be published later this year. She’s looking for another dog rescue to donate her future profits. “I just felt like it would be great to open the doors for another rescue,” Kidd said. “I wanted to expand it and develop more relationships and connections and until this money is a reality.”

Money will strengthen workforce development State Rep. Maria Donatucci (D185th dist.) announced that a grant for $137,951 was awarded to the Philadelphia County Workforce Development Board to provide 200 middle school students with career exposure in fields related to science, math, engineering and technology. The program is designed to increase interest in middle-skill, high-skill and professional careers in these high-priority industries. The funds were awarded as part of the Business-Education Partnership program, through the Department of Labor & Industry. More than $2.4 million was awarded to local workforce development boards across the state.

In addition to helping homeless dogs find their forever homes, Kidd is hoping to erase stigmas associated with grief, depression, anxiety and breed discrimination. She’s hoping to spread awareness and offer advice to shelters and rescues to fill the needs of a growing population of organizations. “I’ve told all the rescues that I’ve spoken to that regardless of who we decide to partner with, I can see through the interview process what their needs are,” Kidd said. “We can strategize for how to meet those needs, regardless if they’re a partner with this project or other projects. I run projects and campaigns throughout the year to benefit various organizations. So if not this, then likely it’ll be something else.”

Roofer charged in client’s death, burning vehicle

T

he district attorney has charged a man in connection to a body that was found in a burning vehicle in a South Philadelphia parking lot. Luis Cruz, 39, is charged with murder, arson, possession of a firearm, possession of an instrument of crime, obstruction of justice, abuse of corpse and tampering with evidence in relation to the gruesome discovery in Philadelphia’s 3rd Police District. According to District Attorney Larry Krasner, Cruz was a contractor who was hired to do a roofing job for the victim. Cruz had a falling out over the decedent’s dissatisfaction with Cruz’s roofing work and refused to make payment for the work Cruz supplied, according to the District Attorney’s Office. On Jan. 21, police officers responded to a report of a 2019 Jeep Wrangler that was on fire on the 2700 block of S. 3rd Street. Police discovered the body of 43-year-old Joslyn Morgan in the back seat of the burning vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. After a postmortem examination, the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the cause of death was a close-range gunshot wound to the head. Police used video evidence from multiple locations near the parking lot, records from two cell phones confiscated as evidence from the vehicle and witness testimony, leading them to Cruz, police said. On Saturday, Philadelphia homicide detectives executed a search warrant at Cruz’s home and discovered additional evidence linking him to the decedent’s murder, according to the DA’s report. Cruz was taken into custody, after which he confessed key details of the crime and his apparent attempt to dismember the victim’s body and destroy the remains to investigators, officials said. “This shocking crime required a significant and thoughtful investigation. I thank the Philadelphia Police Department and my office’s Homicide Unit for their expedient and careful work in tracing this murder back to Luis Cruz, who appears to have taken a man’s life over an argument about the quality of his roofing work,” Krasner said. “Because of this murder, a man is forever lost to his family and community. In addition to prosecuting this case, my office is working to make sure trauma-informed services and resources are available to the victim’s grieving loved ones.” A preliminary hearing for Luis Cruz is scheduled for Feb. 12 at the Juanita Kidd Stout Center for Criminal Justice.

Residents voice concerns to police over spike in crime By Mark Zimmaro SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

M

ore than 100 concerned residents packed a small conference room at the 1st Police District on Tuesday, Jan. 21, in response to a trend of rising crime across the city and in their South Philly neighborhoods. Residents were upset at what they called “a lack of police presence” on the streets and how taxpayer money is allocated in regard to police protection. They made their voices heard to police officials during a one-hour meeting at the district’s headquarters at 24th and Wolf streets. “We pay the most in (property) taxes and we have no type of control,” one resident said. “It’s all going towards another neighborhood.”

According to the Philadelphia Police website, 35 homicides were committed citywide in the first 27 days of the year, which is a 40-percent increase during the first three weeks of 2019. Robberies and burglaries have also been a hot-button issue, especially in South Philadelphia. “I get home late at night and drive around looking for a parking spot near my home,” one resident said. “If I can’t find one, I’ll park illegally, knowing I’ll get a ticket. I’d rather pay the ticket at this point because it’s terrifying.” The meeting was the largest-ever crowd assembled for a Police Town Hall at the 1st District, according to Capt. Louis Campione. The increased neighborhood presence was partly because it followed the news of 18-yearold South Lee Street resident Erin Schweikert’s decomposed body being

The Linc set to host annual event that aims to boost medical research on rare diseases

U

plifting Athletes, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization that inspires the rare disease community with hope through the power of sport, announced plans for the third annual Young Investigator Draft, presented by CSL Behring, taking place on Saturday, March 7, at Lincoln Financial Field. The football theme of the Young Investigator Draft is inspired by the NFL Draft. Instead of drafting emerging young football talent, this draft turns the spotlight on the next generation of promising young medical researchers who are “drafted” and awarded research grants by Uplifting Athletes to help them pursue new treatments and potential cures for many of the world’s rarest diseases. “The Young Investigator Draft serves as a powerful celebration of research within the field of rare diseases, providing a platform to distribute research funding to up-and-coming young researchers and honoring our ‘Rare Disease Champion Team,’ ” said Rob Long, executive director of Uplifting Athletes. “We’re proud to have already awarded $180,000 in grants over the past two years alone and look forward to continued success. With every new year, we discover brilliant young researchers who help us learn more about these underserved diseases.” Uplifting Athletes and its annual Young Investigator Draft focus on rare diseases because they are often underserved and so diverse. One in 10 Americans are affected by rare diseases. That’s a higher percentage than cancer and AIDS combined. Due to the large variety and complexity of rare diseases, there is very little support for rare disease research, especially compared to funding for more common diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Uplifting Athletes exists to close this funding gap. Uplifting Athletes’ emphasis for the Young Investigator Draft is on building greater audience participation for the draft event as well as inviting more medical research-related corporate sponsorship and involvement in the event. To participate in the event, visit the Young Investigator Draft Facebook event page at bit.ly/2020YID.

An investigation is continuing and one arrest was made in connection with Schweikert’s death as Maddison Leidy, 25, was charged with criminal conspiracy, abuse of corpse and other related offenses, according to police. Leidy was one of five residents at the Porter Street home who were questioned after the discovery. She is being held on $500,000 bail and has a preliminary court hearing on Feb. 5. No other arrests had been made at the time of the meeting. Schweikert’s death has sent shock-

waves through the community, especially those who live in close proximity to the scene. “This is unbelievable,” one neighbor said. “This is not a robbery. This is not drug addiction. This is beyond that … Everyone is driving down the street and stopping in front of that house. As horrible as that night was, we thought at least they were going to be gone. Within 48 hours, (residents of the home where Schweikert was found) were back in.” A GoFundMe has been set up to raise money to compensate for funeral costs. As of Tuesday, $20,455 of a $25,000 goal was reached. Police declined to speak on details of the case, but said that the best way of preventing similar occurrences was to call police on any suspicions. “That investigation is ongoing,”

Campione said. “As far as your concerns, call 9-1-1. If you see something out of order, be good eyes and ears and get that information to us. That’s the best thing you can do.” Residents are taking it a step further. Girard Estate Area Residents (GEAR) are hosting what they call an “Emergency Meeting” on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at St. Monica Gym at 16th and Shunk streets from 6:30-9 p.m. The anti-crime rally welcomes all South Philly residents to attend, and invites were sent to the mayor, district attorney, attorney general and police commissioner as well as local state and city representatives. “Next week, you got to get all your neighbors and come out because that’s where we ask for the money for protection,” GEAR representative Jody Della Barba said.

LETTERS: Readers offer their views <<Continued from page 4

Grammar matters, says letter writer Often, when I read printed texts such as newspapers or advertisements or even listen to some radio announcements, I perceive certain errors in grammar that really annoy me. Of course, even smart, educated people make mistakes. And who knows? I may make one or two in this very essay. However, there are certain common examples of incorrect usage that I find especially irritating. For instance, I notice even highly educated people frequently say or write something like, “I will try and finish the job on time.” The word “and” is strictly a conjunction. It connects two separate words or phrases. To be grammatically correct, the word “try” should be followed by an infinitive or basic verb form preceded by the word “to.” The only proper way to say the sentence is: “I will try to finish the job

on time.” In everyday usage, many people think there is nothing wrong with splitting an infinitive. Some may say, “I will try to quickly finish the job.” This breaks an old rule about keeping the two words of the infinitive together. The accurate syntax or word order is: “I will try to finish the job quickly.” Another common annoying mistake is confusing “your” and “you’re.” The first is a possessive pronoun meaning “belonging to you.” The second is the contraction for “you are.” They are not interchangeable. An example of correct usage is, “The invitation states that you’re having a party at your house.” One bad habit that really bothers me is the mixup between “like” and “as.” Both these words can be used to make comparisons; both can be prepositions, but they are not interchangeable. The verb “like” becomes a preposition in the sentence: “Bobby is like his father.” Meanwhile, the word “as” can often be used as a conjunction, for example,

in the sentence, “Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania, as are Pittsburgh and Scranton.” It can also serve as an adverb (“as soft as silk”) or preposition (“She was stubborn as a teenager”). It all depends on usage. The mistake that annoys me most is the all-too-common expression, “like I said.” It should be, “as I said.” I have made this mistake myself many times when speaking. Recently I found this sloppy question in my morning paper: “Where do the majority of guns come from.” The editor failed to correct the error – ending a sentence with a preposition – “from.” The sentence should read: “From where do the majority of guns come?” Of course, these are only a few examples of the many careless errors people make in everyday speech and writing. It just bothers me when vernacular speech or slang becomes part of published writing. Of course, language evolves with usage. Maybe “like“ will one day replace “as.” Anything is possible. Gloria C. Endres

Pennsport community awaits ZBA vote on Blatstein’s Super Wawa By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

R MARK ZIMMARO/South Philly Review

At left, South Philadelphia’s Shymar Wiggins is fouled on his way up in a game against Paul Robeson. At right, Jamire Evans sinks a free throw.

SPHS: Trio of seniors shines <<Continued from page 1 “The best thing about those guys is that they are sponges,” Terry said. “They listen. We have a great player-coach relationship. I let them take more ownership of the team this year.” And his players have proved good on the investment. The Rams were 12-8 after defeating Paul Robeson, 52-47, last week. More importantly, Southern is in the mix as one of the top teams in the Public League. Terry said he gave his guys a longer leash by letting them run drills at practice and was delighted to see they didn’t cut corners. They might not have known they were being watched but Terry was still keeping tabs. “We do a drill where if they miss a layup they’d have to run a full-floor sprint,” Terry said. “I’d be in the office, letting them run the drill to see if they would do it without me. And they did. They’ve done it from the beginning of the season, and that let me know they were going to take ownership.” Part of that strong relationship was the fact that Terry graduated to coach the varsity team at the same time Dixon, Wiggins and Evans were promoted from junior varsity to the big squad a couple of years ago. They made the journey together, as Terry previously coached them on JV.

“They’ve come a long way,” Terry said. “We grew together. I’ve worked tirelessly with them on honing their skills and getting their compete level up. Last year was their breakout year.” They’re looking to take it a step further both in high school and beyond. Dixon and Wiggins are hoping to play ball at the same college next year as a package deal. They attended prospect camps at Rutgers University and are hoping to end up at the same school, as many programs have shown interest in both. Evans is undecided, as he is also considering football, where he is a standout wide receiver. Those life-changing decisions will likely be made after basketball season, as the three sponges soak in their senior year. Evans usually supplies the laughs to help them through the daily grind. “Jamire is probably one of the funniest people on the team,” Dixon said. “Even if we’re in a bad mood, he always stays positive. We all just end up laughing. The things that come out of his mouth are hilarious.” But they also know when it’s time to flip the switch. “We can joke with each other but when it comes down to it, it’s time to be serious,” Wiggins said. “Coach will look at us three, and we know it’s time to turn it up.”

esidents of Pennsport have waited months to find out whether the city’s zoning board will approve Bart Blatstein’s proposed Super Wawa on the northeast corner of Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Tasker Street, and it looks like they’re going to have to wait a bit longer to hear the result. Upon the conclusion of last Wednesday morning’s ZBA meeting, which was continued from a previous meeting in November, members of the zoning board were informed that two of the board’s members who weren’t present for the first meeting would have to read its transcript before they can vote. Frank DiCicco, chairman of the zoning board, said that he “would think” the members will have read the transcript “within 30 days.” Most people who testified at the meeting spoke out against the Wawa, highlighting its auto-centric use as a gas station, which would inhibit the Delaware Riverfront’s ability to become a more pedestrianoriented area. In his testimony, Matt Ruben, chairman of the Central Delaware Advocacy Group, criticized the developers for submitting their permit just before a change to the zoning code passed City Council that designated Tasker Street as a “river access street” in the Central Delaware Overlay. The legislation was introduced in late 2018 or early 2019 and passed in February 2019, according to DiCicco –just after the developers submitted their permit. This is important because as per the overlay, auto-centric uses are also not allowed on river access streets – not just Columbus Boulevard. Because the development team submitted its permit just before the legislation passed, the Wawa proposal was grandfathered in to the zoning code despite Tasker Street’s presentday status as a river access street. “The reason that they applied when they did is because they knew

Tasker was about to become a river access street,” said Ruben. “They intentionally and consciously, tactically and strategically put in an application that they knew would have an unusual negative impact. And for that reason alone, my position is that this board should vote not to approve this request for a special exception. I would further suggest that the only logical way that the board could approve with this information in hand is to simply declare that the Master Plan and the overlay are unimportant and irrelevant.” The development team’s attorney, Carl Primavera – without outright denying the claim – pushed back. “The community was discussing the Wawa with the fuel pumps in 2017, and two years later the ordinance was amended to make Tasker a river access street,” he said. “Doesn’t it seem that the community, and perhaps CDAG, was the one that was trying to block this project rather than the client trying to get in before the amendment to the code?” “It only seems that way if you’re selectively omitting certain facts, which you are,” Ruben shot back. “One of which is the property still isn’t subdivided. So to assume that we as the community had any knowledge that you would be able to do an Enron around fronting on Columbus Boulevard is [wrong]. We didn’t know what you were planning so why would we even need to promote Tasker’s river access street to stop you if we had no contemplation that you were going to create this weird 20-foot strip to try and get around it?” Joe Forkin, president of the Delaware Waterfront Corporation, also testified. In his testimony, he said the Wawa would “introduce environmental hazards that would not otherwise be introduced to the site” and would “put pedestrians more at risk because of the curb cuts and the crossing of automobiles.” Harris Steinberg, executive director of Drexel University’s Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation, said

that the Wawa was “not consistent in my understanding with the plan for the central Delaware.” He called the development “an automobilecentric development proposal that is antithetical to the civic vision of the Central Delaware [Overlay].” Pat Fitzmaurice, president of the Pennsport Civic Association, brought up the issue of burden. He said that the law dictates that the burden of proof is on the developers to prove their proposal wouldn’t negatively affect the area; it’s not on the community to prove it would. “At none of the meetings – including this hearing – have we heard specifically how many vehicles this proposed use will attract off of I-95 and placed to our street grid,” he said. “We haven’t heard whether his numbers have been updated to include changing uses, designs, users or tenants of those neighbors...We need to know this to determine whether this use is inconsistent with the comprehensive plan, which does call for river access streets. We haven’t heard anything about whether this proposed use will actually affect walkability.” Katherine DeAngelis, a selfdescribed 35-year Pennsport resident and CDAG member, called the Wawa “completely unnecessary,” citing the abundance of gas stations already in the area. “This new plan attempts to attract more cars and tractor trailers that exit I-95 for gas,” she added. “This already busy intersection does not need more traffic.” In his closing comments, Primavera exuded confidence in the development team’s argument. “I think we’ve heard some very creative arguments, and I compliment opposing counsel for being creative because they had a tough case,” he said. “They had to basically say the law doesn’t apply. So, I respect the fact that they were talking about master plans and visions and spirit – it sounds like something I would do. Smoke and mirrors. The bottom line is the law’s on our side.”

CARDELLA: Gonna be a long year <<Continued from page 4 He took the Art of Bankruptcy course at Penn instead of taking Geography. Also this month, Trump was irate because liberals criticized his spelling of “imminent.” The president obviously believes that no stable genius should ever use spell-check. Trump’s learned response to his critics, “What’s the difference anyway?” I’m thinking that, “What’s the difference anyway?” might be a good campaign slogan for him after he beats the impeachment rap. Some of my friends are upset about Harry and Meghan “stepping down.” First, I have to admit that I tend to get William and Kate mixed up with Harry and Meghan. Some folks want Harry and Meghan to live up to their vows. I’ve tried to explain to Fran that the only reason that I haven’t done well earning money is I took a vow of poverty. I take my vows very seriously. Fran, not so much. I understand that the Queen no longer will allow Harry and Meghan to use their royal titles – “Freeloaders.” Some readers have constantly attacked me for my partisanship. They write letters to the editor, post on my Facebook page, and even leave notes in my bathroom. Pshaw! I watched the recent Democratic presidential debate very closely. The problem was that all the entertainment value happened after the debate, when I’d gone to use the bathroom. Elizabeth Warren confronted Bernie Sanders while her mic was still on. “You accused me of lying on national TV,” she said. Sanders tried to put her off by saying that was not the time for discussion. Meanwhile Tom Steyer stood between the two senators looking like

a guy who’d just found out his fly was unzipped for the last two hours. Warren claimed during the debate that Sanders had told her two years ago that he thought a woman could not win the presidency. Bernie claimed he never said any such thing. But he should’ve said, “I don’t remember saying any such thing, but big deal if I did.” It’s no secret that some observers, especially after Hillary lost to an uninformed, inexperienced, abrasive jerk, felt that it must’ve been the woman thing that hurt her. I think it was a factor. It’s not sexist if you believe that might still be the case in 2020. It’s just an opinion. An opinion shared by many women. Warren had her best moment during the debate when she pointed out that both she and Amy Klobuchar (the lone women on stage) were the only ones who had never lost an election. Last week, the New York Times endorsed both women. A strange posture because we don’t have co-presidents, and the women differ on key issues. January also included Fran joining her work colleagues at a place called Bury The Hatchet. I personally am not in favor of wives becoming proficient at throwing an ax. That’s not male pride; just plain fear. You may be too young to remember when, during a skit on The Tonight Show, Ed Ames’ demonstration of ax-throwing turned into one of the most-watched of all Carson YouTube videos. Ames threw the tomahawk at a painted outline of a male figure. If the figure had been a real man, he would’ve become a soprano. Hang in there. It’s only January. You can follow Tom Cardella on Facebook.

EAGLES INSIDER

Eagles need a game-changing pass rusher next season

Y

ou have a list. You have checked it twice. You want to make sure you have it right for the category of Biggest Need For The Philadelphia Eagles In 2020. And at the top of the list is …? Here’s a suggestion: Defensive end. Someone who is going to wreck offensive lines. A difference-making player. This isn’t a sexy position; instead, think of someone who is so disruptive he froths at the mouth at the very suggestion of a quarterback dropping back to pass. This, as the Eagles reconstruct the roster for 2020, needs to be a priority. The priority? No, not on a team that has

so many needs in what should be an especially busy offseason for the Birds. But the Eagles have a glaring hole at one of the game’s most important positions and they are going to have ample opportunities to fill it. If you want to point to one difference between the Super Bowl-winning defense from 2017 and the group from 2019, you

Dave

Spadaro

would say defensive line. Specifically, defensive end. The Eagles tried to revamp the position after the ’18 season as they traded away Michael Bennett and had Chris Long retire. The team signed Vinny Curry as an unrestricted free agent and loaded up on young ends, but exactly none of them stepped out as a game-changing player. Oh, the Eagles are OK with starters Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett, two of the hardest workers and toughest guys around. Graham (8½ quarterback sacks in 2019) is a borderline Pro Bowl player who attacks the game with energy and gusto. Barnett (6½ sacks) is too undersized to be a dominating player, but he plays hard and he’s smart and he

brings his game on every play. The problem isn’t necessarily with those two players, it’s what the Eagles didn’t get in terms of production behind the starters. Curry actually played well in a reserve role with five quarterback sacks and toughness against the run, and young end Josh Sweat chipped in with four sacks. The three other ends on the active roster – amazing that the Eagles carried seven ends on a 53-man roster all season – Daeshon Hall, rookie Shareef Miller and Genard Avery collectively had 1½ sacks. That’s not good enough. It’s easy to say and much harder to do, but the Eagles need to upgrade defensive end and find themselves some-

one who changes the way offensive lines scheme to block the defense. They need a player who is going to collapse the edge, who is going to beat double teams. They need a star pass rusher at the defensive end position. Go ahead and get one – either in free agency or the NFL Draft, in which the Eagles select 21st overall in April – and see how much better this defense becomes. It will be like night and day. It might be the push the Eagles need to get back to another Super Bowl. A roster that has a lot of needs has one that needs to be clearly at the top: A pass rusher who changes the game.

Bryant’s death looms large among Pro Bowl festivities By Al Thompson FOR SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

O

RLANDO – All week long, the Pro Bowl had gone on as scheduled. Light practices with players sharing stories about football, family and friends with each other, and taking time each day to spend time with the thousands of fans who made the trip to the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Kissimmee to watch practices and attend the many events around Orlando that make up Pro Bowl Week. But the news of the tragic deaths of nine people in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles, including NBA legend and Philadelphia-area native Kobe Bryant, put a somber tone everywhere from the field, to the stands, the locker rooms and press box. “Everybody was hoping it was fake,” Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton said at his locker after the game. “That’s tough, that’s tough.” On Friday, Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox had said he likes coming to the Pro Bowl for a number of reasons. He gets to meet up with opponents he butts heads with as well as players who play the same position as his. “You’re hanging around the guys, having a good time, obviously talk about ball,” Cox said Friday during a private event with a group that works with families grieving the loss of a loved one in the armed forces. “A guy like Travis (Cowboys center, Frederick) is in our division, so obviously, you’re going to talk some stuff, then it kind of fades away. But at the end of the day we’re all here at the all-star game, we respect each other. So, we’ll talk a little football so, yes.” The group Cox was doing an appearance with is called Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). About 20 Pro Bowl players were in attendance, including Darius Leonard (ILB Colts), Eric Kendricks {ILB Vikings}, Harrison Smith {SS Vikings), Jarvis

Eagles long snapper Rick Lovato after the Pro Bowl. The 27-year-old said the news of Kobe Bryant’s death just before the start of the 2020 Pro Bowl, changed the mood of the NFC locker room from festive to somber. Landry (WR Browns), Joel Bitonio (G Browns), Jurrell Casey (IL Titans), Justin Tucker (K Ravens), Keenan Allen (WR Chargers), Lamar Jackson (QB Ravens), Mark Andrews (TE Ravens),

Michael Thomas (WR Saints), Minkah Fitzpatick (FS Steelers), Morgan Cox (LS Ravens), Quenton Nelson (G Colts), Ryan Kelly (C Colts), T.J. Watt (OLB Steelers), Tre’Davious White (CB Bills), Tress Way (P Redskins)

and Von Miller (OLB Broncos) Cox said he had a great time helping put a smile on the faces of people who have had a tough time recently. “It was good,” Cox said. “We

got here, we kind of learned about (TAPS) when we first got here. These families are here, they’ve lost a loved one fighting for our c o u n t r y. T h a t ’s a b i g p a r t o f TAPS. It was a great time. We got to build some flags out of wood, made them out of wood, sanded them down, stapled them together. At the end of the day, they had plaques for the families. It was special.” An announced crowd of 54,024 filled Camping World Stadium on Sunday. The weather was outstanding, and the atmosphere in the building was happy. Then the news about Bryant started to hit people’s cell phones. Reporters were combing the internet to get updates on what had happened. The NFL held a moment of silence in the stadium to honor those killed in the accident. Eagles long snapper Rick Lovato said the NFC locker room was stunned to hear the news. “As soon as everyone said it in the locker room, I just went completely white,” Lovato said after the game. “I was in complete shock.” Like many of the Eagles from the 2017 team that won the Super Bowl, Lovato has a vivid memory of Bryant’s visit and pep talk to the Eagles just two days before th eir N F C Eas t- clin ch in g w in over the Los Angeles Rams. “He came and talked to us two years ago back when we played in LA against the Rams to win the NFC East,” Lovato said. “He went and spoke to us before that game. How inspiring he was. You could tell how much of a leader he was, how great he was at just the speech itself. His competitiveness…taking pictures with all of us, cheering us on in the Super Bowl. He had a No. 8 uniform on. It was so sad to hear that a guy, 41 years old, to go like that. And his daughter and his daughter’s friend and her parents as well, it’s a tragedy, it really is a tragedy.”

Song sung blueline:

With NHL teams adding player’s-choice pop tunes after goals, Flyers weigh what they’d want to hear

By Mark Zimmaro SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

P

icture this: Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek racing down the ice. It’s a 2-on-1. Giroux saucer passes across to Voracek, who buries the one-timer! The crowd at the Wells Fargo Center jumps to its feet, and the stadium queues up the music: In this case, it’s probably something like “Glory Days” or “Thunder Road” by Bruce Springsteen. Voracek is a noted music buff and he loves his classics. So why not share that lovable side of such a marketable player? The Flyers have the opportunity to follow a recent trend in which a few NHL teams are ditching the traditional “team goal song” after a goal is scored on home ice. Instead, teams like the Washington Capitals and San Jose Sharks are going with personalized songs in honor of the goal scorer. The song “Still D.R.E.” by Dr. Dre can be heard at the Capital One Center each time Alex Ovechkin scores a goal. On the flip side, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver becomes a singalong every time T.J. Oshie tickles the twine. It’s fun. And better yet, it’s a way to showcase the personalities of rising stars in a sport that struggles to steal the spotlight among crowded sports markets south of the Canadian border. “That would be cool,” All-Star winger Travis Konecny said. “They do it in other sports so it would be cool to do something like that. I’d definitely be interested. I guess it depends which guys are scoring a lot, and if you like their music.” Konecny said he’d probably go with a country music song if he were to choose. Voracek said he enjoys older music. He likes to “stick to the old stuff,” naming Tom Petty, U2 and AC/ DC as his favorites, when he’s not listening to “The Boss.” James Van Riemsdyk said he hadn’t thought about a specific selection but he embraced the idea if the trend makes its way to Philly. “I think the culture in hockey can sometimes be a little stuffy as far as not embracing things like that,” he said. “Obviously, it’s a team game but some-

MARK ZIMMARO/South Philly Review

Travis Konecny takes a shot during a recent Flyers practice. times you can let guys show a little bit of personality and it’s fun for the fans to be able to interact with people and relate to (players). A lot of other sports do a much better job of marketing their interests. Hockey has such great characters in the game that I think we could do little things like that to become more approachable.” Currently, the Flyers play the song “Feel the Shake” by ‘80s rockers Jetboy after any goal, regardless of who scored it. It follows a long list of past goal songs, which included tunes by Pennywise, Fallout Boy and, of course, that sort of memorable “Doop” song. There’s always the chance some players might shy away from it as the

team-first concept often trumps individualized thinking in the sport. Some guys are just indifferent about it, like Sean Couturier. “It could be nice, but for me it doesn’t really matter,” Couturier said. “I don’t really care too much, but it could be fun for the fans. It could be a way to know the guys a little more personally.” Problems could also arise with those ugly redirection goals as it might not be immediately known who actually should receive credit for touching the puck last. But there are other opportunities to dip a toe in the water. Why not use individual songs during the shootout? Think baseball walk-up music. How

pumped did you get when “Kashmir” played at Citizens Bank Park, signaling that Chase Utley was approaching the plate? Remember Yankees closer Mariano Rivera approaching the mound with Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” on the speakers? Fans were anything but sleepy.

point pace that is usually good enough to grab one of the final spots, as Columbus finished last season with 98 and took the second wild card. Montreal finished ninth with 96. The Flyers will need to continue their pace.

Halfway Home

Prior to the Flyers’ 4-1 loss to Montreal a few games before the All-Star break, Philadelphia had not lost to an Original Six team in regulation. The Flyers are now 10-1-1 against franchises that existed before the 1967 expansion. That includes a 2-0 mark against the Boston Bruins and a 2-0-1 slate against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Though the Flyers are well past the official halfway point of the regular season, the All-Star break is a time to reflect and set sights on the playoff chase. Exiting the break, the Flyers were one point out of a wild card spot with 32 games left to go. Their 60 points in 50 games is a 98-

Prayer To The Blessed Virgin

(Never Known To Fail) O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here you are my mother. O Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days then you must publish and it will be granted to you. E.A. NM-00419352

Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted. Never known to fail. A.M.T.

Holy Spirit, You who make me see everything and who shows me the way to reach my ideals, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You, who are in all the instances of my life with me, I, in this short dialogue want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones. Pray this prayer three consecutive days straight without asking for your wish. After the third day your wish will be granted. Promise to publish your dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted. Thank You St Joseph for Favors Granted.

M.D.

Prayer to St. Joseph Blessed Joseph, husband of Mary, Be with us this day. You protected and cherished the Virgin; Loving the Child Jesus as your Son, You rescued Him from the danger of death. Defend the Church, The household of God, Purchased by the Blood of Christ. Guardian of the Holy Family, Be with us in our trials. May your prayers obtain for us The strength to flee from error And wrestle with the powers of corruption So that in life we may grow with holiness And in death rejoice in the crown of victory. S.T.J. Amen.
