f you search #NoSavies or #NoSavesies on Twitter, you get an endless stream of photos, complaints and expressions of confusion from South Philadelphians. And even the ofcial account of the Philadelphia Police Department (@PhillyPolice) plays its part in the timeless debate over whether one can save a parking spot with strategically placed objects. To put it briefly, there is no debate. The space in front of your house, for better or worse, is not your property, but the city’s. “The philosophy has always been ‘The space in front of my house belongs to me’ and that’s really not the case,” 1st District Police Captain Lou Campione put it plainly Tuesday. “The space in front of your house, streets-wise, is public property unless you have a driveway in front of your house that’s been approved.” As we round the finish lap of the month, Philadelphia has experienced its fourth-snowiest January in history. With a cumulative figure of 24.7 inches, the snow and slush are still problematic parking barriers. “If somebody shovels out the spot, the thought process is, ‘Since I shoveled out that spot, I’m entitled to park there’ and

No derailing the issue To the Editor: As chair of the Committee on Transportation and Public Utilities, I felt the need to address this recent incident (Seven cars on a CSX freight train derailed Jan. 20 in the area of the South Street Bridge). I’ve had concerns about the state of our bridges and other vital infrastructure for a while now. I have contacted CSX numerous times with the concerns and complaints that have been brought to my attention by people of the 2nd Councilmanic District and others. At this moment, we do not know what caused the derailment; however investigations will happen, and we will get down to the bottom of what led to this near catastrophe. No matter what the immediate cause of this incident, we know we have a number of bridges that are in need of serious renovation and repair. I’m thankful that no injuries
have been reported in this event and that, as we believe, nothing was spilled. However we cannot disregard this just because the worst didn’t happen. This could have been a major incident, and with all the news about the dangers of chemical spills and what is occurring in West Virginia, we should take this as a wake up call to ensure that our bridges and rail lines are properly maintained and safe. Kenyatta Johnson 2nd District Councilman
Editor’s Note: Since issuing his statement last week, it has been reported that a large piece of the 25th Street Bridge has fallen.

attempts by state leaders to deconstruct public schools, as well as with an often unsympathetic media (“Time to speak up, Jan. 23). Helen is absolutely right to be skeptical of the appointment of Bill Green as the new head of the School Reform Commission. He shares the governor’s favorite goal of privatizing our schools. She is also on point when she says we need to bring back local control of our schools after a dozen years of failed state management. Enough of that. And why would Tom Cardella come to the conclusion that Helen and other parents want to close off “escape routes from public schools (“January jam, Feb. 23) just because they oppose a questionable gimmick to funnel children through “universal enrollment into pre-determined placements? They should question any attempt to blend public, private and religious education at the expense of the public and in violation of our state law. Gloria C. Stirring up conversation
“I have no idea what Mr. Cardella is saying in this garbled interpretation of me and other public school parents’ concerns (“January jam, Jan. 23) ... These concerns are hardly mine alone. Mr. Cardella neglected to attend a public meeting at the district on these issues in which more than 200 people raised concerns about data privacy, church/state separation, vouchers and other issues if the District were to turn over control of student placement to a private third party and regulate attendance in all district, charter and Catholic schools. It’s hardly the dumbed down set of issues presented above and serious readers I hope will get educated on them rather than dismiss them without thinking. Helen Gym via southphillyreview.com
“Regarding Helen Gym’s comments, my comment did not cover nor was it meant to cover the entire range of school issues, many of which I likely would agree with her [on]. Rather I was commenting upon the reports in the news media that she objected to the simplification of the process called “open enrollment whereby multiple forms were eliminated to make the process easier for parents to transfer their kids to alternative systems. She was quoted as saying that she thought that open enrollment was just another way to “chase kids out of the public school system. If she was misquoted in those reports then she should just say so. Tom Cardella via southphillyreview.com
“I think it has gotten too out of hand and too hyped. By the time Super Bowl Sunday gets here, I just want the game to be over. John Cabulis, Third and South streets

NO BUSINESS LIKE SNOW BUSINESS: The skies have not been skimpy with their output in the last week, with this snowman on the 2000 block of South Ninth Street proving their generosity and a resident’s creativity. The East Passyunk Crossing-situated fellow, though, has not gained complete acceptance, as the yellow traces reveal at least one confrontation with an unimpressed pet. SPR
“I agree with Tom that the first paragraph and title of the column specifically criticized being against simplifying the process of transferring; whether or not the author attended a public school meeting really has nothing to do with what was written. I applaud Helen Gym’s efforts to make public schools better specifically her holding the District accountable for the violence against Asian students at Southern and I doubt our columnist would be critical of that. When I grew up in the 1980s, going to public school was never an option and I applaud anyone trying to correct that but there are students who are being held back because of the conditions of the public schools and any opportunity to get out and into a better school, public or not, needs to be as easy as possible for the good of the individual student, not the perceived good of the public schools system.â€? A stunning occasion Police arrested a Point Breeze man for allegedly using a stun gun over a parking space issue. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor
J
ust past midnight Tuesday, police responded to a call on the 2000 block of Manton Street where they met with a man who said he had engaged in an argument with another male, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The complainant stated he had bickered with the individual over the latter’s removal of an orange traffic cone the former had situated to save his parking spot. The second figure allegedly produced a stun gun and used it on the first male, who after falling to ground headed to the rear of his home, Tolliver said. Spotting a patrol car’s flashing lights, he notified authorities of the incident and pointed out the defendant, whose supposed weapon they retrieved. The victim sustained injuries to his knees and wrists from the gun. Authorities charged Malcolm Greer, 47, of the 1200 block of South 21st Street with possession of an instrument of crime, simple and aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person. He awaits a Feb. 11 preliminary hearing.
Reckless robber A woman walking through South of South Sunday morning ended up losing her possessions. Traveling along the 1800 block of Carpenter Street at 2:10 a.m., the complainant received a punch to the face from an unknown man who had approached her from behind, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He grabbed her purse, which contained an iPhone, $20, keys and identification, and fled the scene, with the victim last catching him running on the 1000 block of South Cleveland Street. She described him as black, in his 30s and 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10; wearing dark clothing with a hood; and having a dark complexion and long hair, possibly dreadlocks. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.
Walking along the 2000 block of McKean Street at 12:32 a.m., he heard a person from behind for a light for his cigarette, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The requester and an ally approached him, with one grabbing him by his arm and turning him around to face them. While one man placed a black automatic handgun against his head, the other removed $11, identification and a Google cell phone from his pockets, Tolliver said, with the two fleeing on foot heading southbound along 20th Street. The victim described them as black, in their late 20s, approximately 6 foot, having goatees and wearing all dark clothing. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.
Restaurant vandalized A Bella Vista establishment suffered exterior and interior damage last week. Police reported to Supper, 926 South St., Jan. 23 in response to a burglary call and learned from the complainant that between 10:30 a.m. Jan. 22 and 9:30 a.m. the next day, someone had used a rock to smash the site’s front glass door, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The location also had a smashed cash register, which had $200 removed from it. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

A popular Pennsport shopping destination dealt with a bomb threat last week. Just before 7 p.m. Jan. 22, a manager at Walmart, 1675 S. Columbus Blvd., reported that an unknown male with a Middle Eastern accent called the location and stated “I placed a bomb in the store, and I want a $500 MoneyGram, or I will explode the bomb,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A K-9 unit arrived shortly afterward and could not detect any device. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms. SPR

Ligambi released The reputed mobster returned home Tuesday following a motion to drop multiple charges. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor
H
aving resided in the Federal Detention Center since May 2011, 74-year-old Joseph “Uncle Joe” Ligambi made his way back to his Packer Park abode after two juries could not convict him in a sprawling racketeering matter. In the case of the United States of America versus Joseph Ligambi, the prosecution asked Monday for the dismissal of charges against the individual, with U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno signing a release order Tuesday. Ligambi walked after two trials could not prove gambling, loan-sharking, obstruction of justice, racketeering conspiracy or theft of medical benefits claims against him, with George “Georgie Boy” Borgesi, his 50-year-old nephew and co-defendant, earning his release Friday on racketeering conspiracy charges. The former individual also served time for the 1985 murder of Frank “Frankie Flowers” D’Alfonso and returned to South Philly in ’97 when the court overturned that conviction.

the verdict. “We’ve had to be patient, which is the best we can do. We miss him so much.”
Brought to justice For repeatedly beating and starving their 6-year-old son Khalil Whimes, actions that led to his March 19, ’12 death, Point Breeze dwellers Tina Cuffie and Floyd Wimes will serve as many as 60 years in a sentencing issued Nov. 26. Tina Cuffie Common Pleas Court Judge Barbara McDermott punished the two for their three-year cycle of abuse against the boy in their home on the 1800 block of South 22nd Street. Their fall sentencing stems from Floyd Wimes their late summer conviction on third-degree murder charges and gives some sad sense of relief to his foster mother, Alicia James, and foster grandmother, La Reine Nixon, whom child welfare officials ordered to return Khalil to his parents in 2009 though Cuffie, 45, and Wimes, 50, had a history of having their other offspring removed due to neglect, according to court records. September testimony showed the two regularly withheld food from Khalil, who weighed only 29 pounds at the time of his death, subjected him to beatings with belts and cords and failed to have a doctor examine him for more than a year. The evidence also revealed Cuffie, who, along with her partner, will serve at least 30 years behind bars, had him run laps through their apartment the day before he perished as a punishment for his having vomited. Following a morning bath March 19, he suffered a punch to his head from his mother, leading to his transport to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he died that evening. Thirty-nine months after helping Dawud Abdul-Hakim and an unidentified figure to escape the 200 block of Jackson Street following the latter’s shooting of 20-year-old Anthony DeMarco Jr., Kevin Williams received a 35- to 70-year state prison term akin to Assistant District Attorney Jacqueline Juliano Coelho’s request Jan. 16. His sentence stems from his November conviction for conspiracy, robbery and third-degree murder, The 23-year-old, in custody since Nov. 12, ’10, operated a getaway ride for Abdul-Hakim and the at-large gun wielder on the Whitman block Oct. 20, ’10. They had encountered DeMarco Jr., of the 300 block of Ritner Street, at 11:29 p.m., with the unknown man firing his weapon into the young Whitman resident’s stomach and back. The victim, who had received his driver’s license earlier that day, died early the next morning at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Abdul-Hakim, 22, grappled with DeMarco and lobbed the fatality-inducing firearm to the mystery shooter. In custody since May 8, ’11, he is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole on a second-degree murder charge and related offenses. “It’s been rough without him,” Anthony DeMarco Sr., who has another son, Domenic, with wife Maryann said of coping with his loss and deriving strength from

Will you stay, or will you go? Special reports from Pew Charitable Trusts and Redfin concern South Philadelphia. ■ By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r
O
n Jan. 21, the Pew Charitable Trusts, a nonprot research initiative that strives “to improve public policy, inform the public and stimulate civic life,” published a 19-page report called “Millennials in Philadelphia: A Promising but Fragile Boom.” In it, both inspiring and frightening findings are shared. Namely, that Philadelphia is experiencing a population boom, one that can be attributed to an influx of young adults, but that many of them won’t stay as they start thinking about having families. The percentages of 20- to 34-year-olds in South Philly’s zip codes are healthy: 21.7 percent in 19145; 34.9 percent in 19146; 36.1 percent in 19147; and 26.8 percent in 19148. Larry Eichel, the report’s author and project director of the Philadelphia research initiative of the Pew Charitable Trusts, described the desirability of areas that aren’t too expensive yet and are within reasonable distances of Center City. “The absolute numbers are still the highest in Center City, but the big growth is in the areas around Center City – areas that are relatively less expensive to live in. People are able to come in and start taking houses and rehabbing them,” Eichel detailed. “Those are the areas where a lot of young people are going now because they’re relatively affordable, and they’re relatively close to Center City. But obviously in 19146 and 19147, you can walk to Center City, or it’s a very short bus ride.” But why would young folks leave? From one figure in the report, the question “Would Philadelphia Millennials recommend the city as a place to raise children” solicited surprising results: 56 percent say “No” and 36 percent say “Yes.” Furthermore, to the question “How likely are you to be living in Philadelphia 5 to 10 years from now?”, Millennials were much harsher than “Older adults”: 21 percent say “Definitely not”; 29 percent reported they “Probably will not.” “Some are here totally by choice, and
those probably have more tolerance for the downsides with the city – they went in with their eyes open,” Eichel noted of the diversity within the Millennial set. In the poll, 22 percent of Millennials cite “Crime/safety/drugs” as the main reason they would leave, but the largest two categories are jobs and kids: 38 percent say “Job/career” and 29 percent say “Schools/child upbringing.” As Eichel notes, however, crime and schools may be a factor for flight. But there

The Elkins Park-raised Temple alum’s not going anywhere. “I never want to leave. I know that my future children will benefit from living in a neighborhood like Point Breeze, and from everything the city as a whole has to offer,” she elaborated. “I believe in the strength of public school. There are huge problems facing the school district right now, but putting kids in private school won’t save our schools – fighting for them will.” Minton said that Millennials must prioritize in the process of home-buying and that sometimes family-building factors in, but that’s usually for the latter end of the young adult age bracket. “Price, space and school district are always the biggest consideration for anyone buying a house, but I think even more so when someone is considering living in the city,” Minton said. “The good news for potential buyers is that some of the hottest neighborhoods can be affordable.” Jestis Deuerlein, a 34-year-old entrepreneur who specializes in carpentry and finishing, rents on the 1600 block of Reed Street, Chart Provided by where she lives with her husband, P e w C h a r i ta b l e Tr u s t s Eliott Waters, and 7-month-old daughter, Josey. Wayne topped the list, but East Passyunk Crossing landed at the No. 3 spot and Newbold at No. 4. So what makes them “hot”? Blakely Minton, a Redfin agent who covers the Philadelphia area, shared her insights. “East Passyunk and Newbold residents are very active in their community,” she said. “This, paired with a fairly recent

will always be a healthy population for whom the suburban life is the ideal. “No matter how well the city does, on jobs or on education, some people who have the economic wherewithal to leave are going to leave – the schools look better in the suburbs, or where their kids can play in the street and [parents] feel more comfortable about it or in a yard. There are reasons why young families move to the suburbs, and you’re never going to destroy those.” ONE WEEK BEFORE the Pew report’s publication, Redfin, an online real estate brokerage born in Seattle in 2002, published a special report highlighting their “hottest

ing chair it is? I guess you could seize the chairs, since anything left in the street is technically litter. But that’s not anybody’s priority during a snowstorm.” Some Philadelphians say it’s a generational thing. “Renters probably won’t have cars,” Thompson explained, getting to the idea that it’s long-term residents, homeowners and block stakeholders who are often holders of the #ProSavesies philosophy. He detailed what is a pervasive mentality: “I’ve lived here 15 years, I deserve my car, I need to have my car to run errands, but I may not even use it on a daily basis.” Parking, plainly put, is a “hot potato” issue, and, it seems, very few people are willing to take the lead on any kind of largescale innovations or improvements. But it’s often the older generation who at least has the wherewithal to make its voice heard. “There’s no secret to their power: they call politicians and tell them what they want them to do, and new Philadelphians and younger residents don’t,” Geeting said. Shortly before press, a police report came through of a scuffle on the 2000 block of Manton Street over the moving of an orange traffic cone that was holding a parking spot (see page 6). The defendant allegedly used a stun gun on the victim after an argument, and now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault. “People do call 911 and complain,” . Campione said. “There’s actually a ticket that can be written to the person doing it – but it’s difficult to enforce if it’s observed. We don’t get a lot of calls, but on a snow day they’ll get five or six calls.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. Strife is beautiful An East Passyunk Crossing actress is accentuating acceptance as a gay teen’s matriarch. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor
W
ith building empathy and sympathy as the initial and ultimately integral task for an actress to address, Melanie Julian consummately plots to make connections with audiences no matter the complexity or simplicity of a role. As Sandra in Mauckingbird Theater Co.’s presentation of “Beautiful Thing,” the 41-year-old blends harrowing hardship and pleas for ease in mothering an adolescent beginning to comprehend his sexuality. “The story is told so sweetly and without judgment,” the East Passyunk Crossing dweller said of the Adrienne Theatre-situated tale. “It’s a great piece for encouraging acceptance and as a coming-out work, it offers a reminder of the importance of not being ashamed of one’s attractions or feelings.” In promoting those sentiments, Julian is portraying a woman she deems “super fun,” “tough,” “very sexual” and “sure of herself.” As a single mother in a downtrodden section of South East London, Sandra loses layers of her weary nature through her son Jamie, whose kiss with friend Ste proves pivotal in pushing the play’s emphasis on discovery and camaraderie.

LIFESTYLES As she feels many contemporary creations lack those elements, along with explorations of love and family, Julian appreciates the opportunity to execute the gentleness apparent in “Beautiful Thing.” “It’s a gorgeous script, and I love performing it to support Mauckingbird and its mission of inclusion,” she said of the company for whom she played Hippolyta in 2010’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “It really strives to help people to understand they have to battle regardless of their circumstances, especially at times where they feel nobody is going to support them.” An overt component of the 1993 brainchild by English playwright Jonathan Harvey, homosexuality takes on numerous companions as themes, with questions of self-worth, estimation of dreams’ validity and notions of acquiring lasting happiness also affording viewers occasions to see the characters as theatrical depictions of themselves. Julian finds the capacity for channeling those links particularly compelling, as they reveal her infatuation with letting patrons see into her soul, itself an evercovetous seeker of serenity. “I think we long for close bonds, and I’m fortunate to have two careers where

I can reinforce that belief,” the sixth-year assistant professor at Temple University said of meshing her acting, theater and voice coaching endeavors to garner more lessons on life’s laborious and rewarding pursuits. “The play undoubtedly is great for teenagers and young adults, but it’s really for anyone with an interest in great storytelling and wondering how better life can be by constantly looking at who we are and who we can be.” JULIAN HAS EXPLORED opuses with the same allegiance to crisp narration as “Beautiful Thing” possesses for most of her life. Through her mother, the co-founder of a community theater, the Kentucky native found taking on different identities an intoxicating pursuit and became enthusiastic about delving more deeply into theatre’s likelihood of yielding her vocation. Earning bachelor’s degrees in acting and English from the University of Kentucky, she knew forging her future would require diligence and patience and sought more education to understand the historical and critical facets of her burgeoning passion. “Like most people, I suppose, I had a period where I wondered if I were heading in the right direction,” Julian said. “I knew fairly early on, though, that I had to
situate myself in that universe somehow.” Adding master’s degrees through the University of Pittsburgh and the Steel City’s Point Park University, she became a full-fledged occupant of the creative cosmos and has excelled as a hire for The Pittsburgh Playhouse, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Paul, Minn.-based Penumbra Theatre, New York’s SoHo Playhouse, the Sacramento Theatre Co. and the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at the University of California, Davis, her postsecondary education employer before Temple secured her services. Looking to build her local stage profile, she landed her “Beautiful Thing” assignment in December and will cap her experience Sunday. “It has been a great run so far, and I’ve really enjoyed being able to have my acting and teaching feed off each other,” Julian, who is making additional use of handling Sandra’s Cockney dialect by teaching it to her students, said. “I’m definitely enthused about seeing what I can do to help out more productions as an actress and to do more vocal coaching.” Come April, she will assist husband Lane Savadove as he directs her in EgoPo Classic Theater’s “Gint,” in which she will play Oldie Mama, a character whose
name drew a laugh because it marks such a leap from the vitality that Sandra exudes. The play will mark her third work for EgoPo, which Savadove founded in 1991 and guides as its artistic director, and will find her offering vocal coaching, too. The latter talent is also keeping her busy at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, where she is helping South Philly resident Amanda Kearns and the other cast members of the Philadelphia Theatre Co.’s “Tribes.” “Like with any project, I’m enthusiastic about making a difference,” Julian, who has also coached thespians for Luna Theater Co., 620 S. Eighth St., said. With “Beautiful Thing” nearly behind her, the actress confessed to falling for its focus on family and ability to resonate with its beholders. Those qualities have made it a valuable contribution to the contemporary stage and just as endearing as far older and more renowned works. “I’m fortunate to have had this job,” Julian said. “Every experience has kept this teacher a student.” SPR For tickets, call 215-923-8909, or visit mauckingbird.org. Thoughts in Winter
P
teeth into oversight, as we must, but I also believe there is a need for secrecy and we can’t cheer every self-styled patriot to decide for him or herself which secrets are legitimate and which should be disclosed. I don’t believe the collection of meta data is the same thing as listening willy nilly to our phone conversations. While some object to the use of drones to kill our enemies, I find them a useful substitute for putting the lives of American soldiers in danger. I think there is too much discussion about the size of our military and not enough about how to use our military more effectively to meet the challenge of terrorism. The threat we face today is not the same as we faced during the Cold War. I don’t think there is much doubt we are currently prepared to face the wrong kind of war. I believe in freedom of choice for women’s reproductive rights because women are better suited to make that choice than the government. But I also believe, using the same logic, in freedom of choice for parents in choosing the schools their children attend. So, yes, I am for school vouchers, especially for the poor. I have no vested interest in any school system; I am only vested in the belief that parents who choose the schools for their kids are parents who become more interested in their children’s education. More interested parents should translate into more widespread interest in the voting booth for supporting the cost of educating children. Much of what is wrong with our health-care system today is the profit motive. Remove it. Medicare for everyone. Get rid of the idea that we should care more about protecting the insurance companies. The American birthright should be first class medical care. Capitalism is not a religion; corporations are not people. Capitalism is the best economic system we have yet devised. Robust capitalism requires the profit motive, but don’t expect corporations to act altruistically. We need stronger regulations. I believe politics is an honorable profession, and politicians’ often dishonorable actions doesn’t change that fact. By and large, politicians are no more corrupt than any other profession, but the opportunity for corruption is greater, as is the politician’s responsibility to act in the public interest. A disinterested citizenry is not something a democracy can afford and still survive. We get the politicians we deserve. We need to work at making democracy work. I believe that the tide of social justice is inevitable, as inevitable as spring following winter. On this bitter cold morning with the winds blowing and the snow piled in drifts on streets and sidewalks, I can hear the chatter of people and activity outside my window, and I’m comforted by those sounds, and the thought that it won’t be long before the thaw. Daniel (Miles Teller), from left, Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) and Jason (Zac Efron) are lotharios who think they can cheat love.
Too ‘Awkward’ ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer
T
here doesn’t seem to be any definitive awkward moment in “That Awkward Moment,” a long-delayed rom-com formerly titled “Are We Officially Dating?” There are, however, many awkward moments sprinkled in, such as when buddies Jason (Zac Efron) and Daniel (Miles Teller) have to pee horizontally after taking too much Viagra, and when Jason mistakes a “dress-up” party as one where it’s appropriate to dangle a sex toy out of his open fly. While it works for the occasional naughty laugh, the focus on male genitalia is indicative of what’s fundamentally wrong with “That Awkward Moment,” a thinlyveiled misogynist fantasy. Written and directed by Tom Gormican, the movie wants to channel the spirit of John Hughes; however, it forgets that Hughes never made his female characters mere prizes his male characters deserved (if anything, Hughes often did the reverse). Roommates Jason, Daniel, and Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) all vow to stay single in the wake of Mikey’s breakup, but wind up falling for their respective friends-with-benefits nonetheless. The film has good intentions, aiming to show that the bro-ish desire for zero attachment is usually a lie lotharios tell themselves. All it ends up being, however, is a toxic tutorial for young men going through stages of non-development, learning that monogamy has its virtues, but only insofar as what it means for their control over the girls they supposedly love. Remaining secretive about their vow violations, Jason and Daniel bond quickly with Ellie (Imogen Poots) and Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis), while Mikey rekindles
his romance with his young wife Vera (Jessica Lucas). Succumbing to the admittedly ample charms of their dates, Ellie and Chelsea are wooed with ease, and when they’re wronged in a climax that leaves the boys assessing love’s demands, it takes precious little for them to be back in the arms of the men who “deserve” them. Only Vera, who cheats on Mikey, is given true agency, and she’s basically painted as a villain. The film constantly suggests the right girl will always be waiting if the right pick-up lines are mastered.

Recommended Rental Cutie and the Boxer R Available Tuesday
A newly-minted Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature, “Cutie and the Boxer” follows the warm, yet eccentric, lives of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, a New York couple who’ve been married for 40 years and developed a reputation in the city’s art scene. Director Zachary Heinzerling intimately captures “boxing painter” Ushio’s unique work, as well as the wants of loyal Noriko, who’s stood by in the shadows and aches to define herself. oets often use winter as a symbol for death. The winter of our lives is considered doddering old age. It connotes bleakness and desolation in many minds. That is not my reality. The morning after a snowstorm in our neighborhood is noted for bustling activity. The notion of community revived. Folks digging out cars and shoveling pavements. Hard work, yes. Disagreeable, no doubt. But you want to see bleak and desolate in the city, try looking outside on a hot Sunday afternoon. You can see for miles and see only an occasional straggler. The icy winter brings with it the community working together outside to free ourselves from what the freeze has inflicted upon us while inside we search for warmth, snuggling indoors under blankets or over a cup of steaming coffee. Paradoxically, perhaps, winter also brings for me a time of quiet contemplation. I exchange views with my mostly conservative readership and e-mails with my mostly liberal friends. It may surprise some of you who view me as some kind of wild-eyed radical aberration in the midst of South Philadelphia that while I’m among my friends, sometimes my liberal credentials are severely questioned. I find everything is relative and subject to the individual’s perspective. This is an age without nuance. No shades of gray, only black and stark white. Thus folks on the right seem convinced our president is a socialist while those on the left tend to view him as a betrayer of liberal causes. In reality, a president can’t govern so that he satisfies liberals or conservatives, even most of the time. I view myself as a liberal, one who believes government can ameliorate the worst excesses of capitalism and in so doing protect capitalism from carnivorous capitalists. I tell my liberal friends that sometimes I may be more critical of liberals than conservatives because I expect more from liberals, and too many, not all, of today’s conservatives seem to be merely bigots parading under a more respectable label. I don’t see a William F. Buckley or Robert A. Taft or Ronald Reagan feeling comfortable among many of today’s “conservatives.” Lately I find myself increasingly taking a more pragmatic view on major issues. I am somewhere between those who want to canonize Edward Snowden and those who want him executed for treason because they think he is a Russian spy. I think there is a role in national security for wiretapping. I believe we will put more

Fresh Tips For
Game Day DipS (Family Features) When family and friends gather together to watch the game, loading up the table with a variety of easy-to-grab, flavorful appetizers is a winning plan. After all, casual food and good times are what game day is all about. In the world of appetizers, dip is king. From savory to sweet, this simple tailgating party addition can take on flavors that span the globe, or that are as American and as beloved as the gridiron game itself. Keep it light – A tailgating scene can seem overwhelming for those who don’t want to splurge all their day’s calories, so be sure to have lots of fresh, crunchy vegetables on hand. Start with your standard dippers – like sliced carrots, broccoli and cucumbers – or score big with unique vegetable dipper options – like snap peas, asparagus spears and radishes. This recipe for Cucumber Cups creates simple and crunchy bite-sized noshes with a delicious dip of Sabra Hummus in the center. For more great game day recipes, visit www.sabra.com. •
•
Serve Delightful Dippers – Potato and tortilla chips go handin-hand with tailgating festivities, but beyond these standards is a whole world of other dipping options. For a Mediterranean touch, go with flatbread, pita bread or pita chips. Instead of plain old butter rounds, opt for more texture with multi-grain crackers that include raw flax, chia or sesame seeds. Or, serve up a warm batch of buffalo wings with this smoky and spicy recipe for Hummus Buffalo Wing Dip. Offer Variety – A large spread of dippers calls for a wide assortment of scrumptious dips. As an alternative to sour cream or cheese-based dips – which are loaded with fat, preservatives and sodium – serve up an assortment of delicious Sabra Hummus. Hummus offers up the protein, iron and fiber that other dips lack.
Hummus Buffalo Wing Dip 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 cup Sabra hummus Whisk first seven ingredients together (vinegar through paprika). Add Sabra hummus and combine thoroughly.
Cucumber Cups Yield: 16 servings 2 English cucumbers 1 container Sabra hummus 1 teaspoon paprika 1 bunch parsley, finely chopped
Peel cucumbers and slice lengthwise into 1 1/4-inch pieces. Using melon baller, carve out seeds to create a vessel, making sure to leave bottom intact. Using piping bag or small spoon, fill each with hummus, about 1 teaspoon each. Sprinkle with paprika and finely chopped parsley.

Gina’s Never-ending Vanilla Extract
Last call
W
ith Valentine’s Day two weeks away, many folks will make candy manufacturers very happy helpers in their quest to express affection. While Gina Lucas would not slight the vendors’ capitalistic calling, the resident of the 1300 block of East Passyunk Avenue would definitely not mind if more people concocted homemade treats using her Never-ending Vanilla Extract recipe. The most common form of vanilla in use today, vanilla extract has many popular varieties, including Indonesian, Mexican and Tahitian, but the Passyunk Square dweller advocates for a personal touch in involving the bean-based boon to goodies for loved ones. As evidenced by her directions, a little independence can go a long way. SPR
INGREDIENTS: 1 vanilla bean 1/3 of a cup of vodka 1 glass bottle or jar with a tight-fitting lid

ypically, these words signal a bar’s closing. This week, they’re associated with the final chance to enjoy the Center City District Restaurant Week promotion going on through tomorrow. Three-course lunches are $20 while the matching trio is priced at $35 for dinner. Bridget Foy’s, 200 South St., Bistrot La Minette, 623. S. Sixth St., Percy Street Barbecue, 900 South St., and Supper, 926 South St., are participating. For more information, visit centercityphila.org. SPR
DIRECTIONS: Cut the vanilla bean lengthwise, and place in bottle or jar, covering it completely with the vodka. Shake well, and store it in a kitchen cabinet for two to three months. This can be used in all baking recipes. When only half of the extract remains, add more vodka, and return to the storage space.

Han Dynasty ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

hinese New Year begins tomorrow. In honor of the Year of the Horse, I decided to review Han Dynasty, which opened in Old City three months ago. The restaurant is known for its Sichuan food where spice is king. Hot peppers are featured in many of the dishes. I like spicy food, but when a chef goes overboard with a much-too-heavy hand, problems arise. It is difficult to savor ingredients when they are masked by too much heat. Han Dynasty is located in a beautiful space that has been the home of several types of restaurants. It features a lovely bar, bar seating and comfortable booths and banquettes. The original Corinthian columns set off the looming hand-painted ceiling. Our delightful server brought us a pot of lukewarm tea and helped us navigate through the menu. He told us the restaurant serves traditional Chinese food family style with portions large enough to share. Since the menu centers on Sichuan fare, heat indicators are set off by numbers, with 10 being the hottest. I had questions about the difference between the dumplings and the wonton appetizers. The dumplings, stuffed with ground pork, were served with a hot sauce with a bit of sweetness. This sounded delicious. Han Dynasty’s dumplings ($6.95) were nestled in a bowl of chili oil that was so hot, tears sprang to my eyes, and every pore of my being was affected. I wanted to taste the dumplings, so they were whisked away and came back rinsed with a small dish of soy sauce on the side. The wrapper was light and silken so the texture was

spot on. There could have been a bit more ground pork inside, but I could finally taste these treats. The same thing occurred with the spicy crispy cucumbers ($6.95). Much too much chili oil masked the half-moons of cool cukes. Since I am a soup girl, I knew any kind of rich Chinese soup would warm us up on a cold winter’s night. Edward and I looked at the choices and with our server’s help, tucked into bowls of pork with pickled vegetables ($6.95). The stock had a little kick because bits of hot peppers floated in the broth. I avoided them completely, and found the broth to be tasty with just a hint of heat. Strands of pork shared company with strands of pickled Asian greens that played off each other quite nicely. I think the addition of noodles would have given the soup more texture. For our entrees, we avoided the heat completely. We just wanted three dishes that were well-seasoned, as I hoped the ingredients would shine on their own. Shredded duck with ginger ($18.95) hit the mark. The duck was boneless, tender, juicy and not a bit greasy. It hit the hot wok with julienned green beans, green peppers, scallions, fresh fragrant ginger and a hint of soy sauce. It was a rich and satisfying dish. Cumin lamb ($16.95) consisted of bits of lamb, probably cut from the leg or shoulder, encrusted with cumin and simply wok-fried with onions, garlic and peppers. The sauce was light with soy so that it did not detract from the flavor of the meat. Since most entrees feature onions, Restaurant Review:

green peppers and scallions, we wanted to sample a vegetable dish. Baby bok choy with black trumpet mushrooms ($11.95) was a hearty mix of slightly still crunchy bok choy married with heady mushrooms coated in a rich soy hoisin sauce. “The sauce is really good on the rice,” Edward said as he munched with his chopsticks. It was, indeed. These entrees wiped away the memory of over-the-top-hot dishes. Han Dynasty has a full bar. The prices are moderate. A martini is $10, while the wine list features vintages at about $8. = Very Good

or Larry Lanci, owning and operating Lanci Bakery, 1716 Jackson St., is not a job; it’s his passion. The family story dates back to the early 1900s when his great grandfather Raphael arrived in South Philadelphia from Italy and established the family’s American baking roots, which included building the brick oven. The business’ current location, which opened in 1921, was later taken over by his grandfather, Angelo, followed by his father, Raymond. Larry Lanci had no intention of following in their footsteps as his career path was in real estate and cell phone sales. But when his father closed the business in 2007 after suffering a heart attack, the next generation was ready to fulfill the personal request “to open the bakery and do it the way you want to.” “I spent every cent I had to do it,” the Newbold resident, who opens the doors at 6 a.m. seven

I have so much pride in everything I’ve accomplished.” The 93-year-old family institution also takes great pride in its old-world-style bread recipe, and openly shares the ingredients (flour, water, salt and yeast only) on a sign posted in the store. The breadcrumbs from Lanci’s freshly baked bread are “the secret” to Grandmom Lanci’s popular Meatballs. “They go fast and everybody loves them,” the 57-year-old caretaker said. “It’s classic Italian fare.”

Broad and Morris Twin brothers with a West Passyunk connection helped the Phoenix Suns down the 76ers Monday. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

Marcus and Markieff Morris guided Prep Charter to two state crowns and are seeking professional glory as the top substitutes for a young squad. S ta f f P h o t o b y K at h r y n P o o l e
from Markieff, whom the team picked right ahead of him in the draft, he also is posting his best offensive totals. Leaving 60 passes for family and friends, they wanted to impress their backers and keep Phoenix in the playoff race, as they entered seventh in the 15-team pack. “We knew they were struggling a bit,” Markieff said, “so we thought getting off to a good start would help our cause.” THE 76ERS OPENED the dual having the undesired distinction of having the league’s worst defense, with foes firing in 109.5 points per tilt. The Suns seemed poised to become the latest opponents to register a
triple-digit outing, as they knocked down 12 of their first 14 attempts. Markieff received applause when he made his first appearance at the 5:30 mark and quickly added to the onslaught with a bucket. Marcus looked the give the struggling Eastern Conference representatives double trouble with 47 seconds to go in the opening frame and notched two free throws to help the Suns to craft a 40-26 edge. Continuing to show their tenacity in the second quarter, the young men fed off the Suns’ rapid style of play, with Markieff showing his reach by swatting four shots, picking up a beautiful assist on a dunk by center Alex Len and knocking down three shots,
at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php the third coming off an offensive putback. Marcus helped to clog the lane to leave the 76ers with little choice but to settle for high-risk jumpers and tallied two steals, the second leading to a deuce for guard Leandro Barbosa. “I love providing whatever energy we need,” Marcus said of reinforcing Phoenix’s plans on both sides of the ball. With a 62-54 lead at the break, the visitors impressed Hornacek with their ability to attack the net but had him slightly concerned over some of the looks they allowed the 76ers. Whatever defensive miscues they committed could not overshadow their offensive prowess, as Markieff et al returned to their first-quarter selves and pumped in 33 points, with five coming from the older twin, two off a technically perfect jumper over forward Lavoy Allen. Finding himself in foul trouble, though, he sat for the end of the third section and much of the fourth. Enter Marcus. Although he did not approach his 9.9 points-per-game average, he played tight defense that assisted in the Suns’ causing 21 turnovers. Usually trailing by double digits, the 76ers, who never engineered a lead, tried chipping away but fell prey to the hot hand of guard Gerald Green, who led all scorers with 30 points. Hornacek united the Morrises for the last time with 1:44 left, with Marcus tallying their final field goal with a dunk. “Coach is defensive-minded, so we’re committed to being aggressive,” Markieff, who totaled 13 points, three rebounds and as many assists, said. “That fell apart a little, but we regrouped because we’re a good team.” “We’re a good team that can be much better,” Marcus, who scored four points to go along with an assist and three boards, added. Having beaten the 76ers 115-101 Dec. 28, the Suns completed their first season sweep of the local players in four years, with the twins having played major roles in the unblemished endeavor. “I’ve come to expect greatness from them,” Hornacek said. “Tonight was no different.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. s they enjoyed cheesesteaks with their Phoenix Suns teammates Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St., Markieff and Marcus Morris accepted kudos for displaying their dutiful brand of basketball in their native city. Returning to Philadelphia together for the rst time as professionals, the twins, who garnered two state championships while suiting up for the Prep Charter High School Huskies, 1928 Point Breeze Ave., helped their Arizona-based bunch to show no brotherly love to the 76ers, whom they defeated 124-113. “It’s a big deal to come back to Philly and receive so much support,” Markieff said as his colleagues munched on their goodies courtesy of him and his sibling. “We knew the Sixers would give us a tough fight, so it’s good to get out of here with a win.” The 6-foot-10 forward has proven a provider of consistent efforts for rookie head coach Jeff Hornacek, who spent nearly two seasons hoisting jumpers for the 76ers, entering the contest averaging a career-best 12.7 points. The third-year force, who won the Western Conference Player of the Week award for the Nov. 4 to 10 period, has led his unit in rebounding and scoring six times, heading both charts Sunday in Cleveland as the Suns dumped South-of-South product Dion Waiters and the Cavaliers 96-90. Hitting town with a 25-18 record, the guests are meshing as a young club while the hosts took to the floor with a 14-30 mark. “Philly is a scrappy team, so we couldn’t relax at all,” Marcus, who joined the Suns nearly a year ago via a trade with the Houston Rockets, who selected him as the 14th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, said. “In the end, it was a lot of fun.” Seven minutes younger and an inch shorter than Markieff, Marcus is also thriving as a key reserve for Hornacek. The ’10-’11 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year for his junior season exploits at the University of Kansas, where his sibling also matriculated, he has paced the Suns in rebounding twice and scoring once, registering 18 in Dec. 3’s 110-91 loss at Memphis.
