Word on the Street What are your thoughts on the historic winter we are having?

Praising the Saints To the Editor: Huge congratulations are in order for Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti High School for winning this year’s girls’ and boys’ basketball championships! Both teams truly deserved to win as all of them were extremely dedicated and passionate about their sport. Their sense of camaraderie is to be admired. What a sweet victory for both teams to win on the same day at The Palestra. Kudos to their coaches, Carl Arrigale and Letty Santarelli, who inspired their players to do their best. I am so very proud of the students of Neumann-Goretti High School, as I am a graduate of the Class of 1974. Go Saints! Carol A. Pasquarello South Philadelphia

To the Editor: What’s the Sixers’ general manager thinking?

For the 76ers, when it comes to on the court play there is certainly a lack of positive talking points. On Feb. 24th, the Sixers lost to the Milwaukee Bucks, who on gamenight had the worst record in the NBA. These days in Philly when fans get together and talk about the Sixers, the conversation gravitates towards potential draft candidates and moves the organization is making off the court. Should they have let go all of those players starting with Jrue Holiday on draft night, and did the team get a good return on their trades? Last May, Sam Hinkie took over as general manager and president of basketball operations. The team’s last playoff appearance was Game 7 of the 2012 Eastern Conference semifinals against Boston. It was a Cinderella run that season, and one cannot forget Andre Iguodala jumping onto the scorer’s table at the Wells Fargo Center celebrating the teams first playoff series win since 2003 as the team moved

past the Bulls on to the second round. It was only the fifth time in league history that a No. 8 had beaten a No. 1 seed. The team has a large amount of cap space available heading into next season to go along with the draft picks from what’s hyped-up to be an historically deep and talented draft class. Is Hinkie going to be able to convince a coveted free-agent to sign a contract, and which veteran players is he targeting to be a part of the teams longterm plans? Teams don’t win NBA championships without veteran leadership, and the majority of sought-after veterans are not interested in being a part of a rebuilding project. On Feb. 27th, the Sixers agreed to a buyout deal with Danny Granger. As a fan, I wonder how much patience Hinkie expects 76ers spectators to have as he figures out what the master plan is going forward as he attempts to build the team back up into being a contender. All too often Sixers fans have been sold this story before, yet no management group in the team’s recent era has been able to deliver on its promises. Especially in Philly, the

Healthy mindset To the Editor: Rich DiGiacomo is very worried that the rights of parents to educate their children in proper eating habits is being undermined by new school feeding guidelines issued by the USDA (“Junk food for thought, Feb. 27). Even though beverage companies Coke and Pepsi, for example, generally limit their school vending machines to serving juice and water, Rich is concerned that their widespread advertisements for sugarsweetened sodas will be denied by a “socialist ruling. How dare the USDA interfere with the free marketing of sugary, less-than-nutritious drinks to school children? And it does not matter to him that, under the new rules, school districts will have leeway on how and when to limit this advertising. The Journal of the American Medical Association has been tracking obesity rates in children since 2003. Only recently has the JAMA noted a decrease in obesity for children ages 2 to 5 — from 13.9 percent to 8.4 percent — thanks in part to the efforts by the federal government under the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act to encourage healthier eating and exercise habits for growing children. I agree with Rich that teaching children healthy eating habits starts in the home, but it helps not to confuse them with mixed messages in the school cafeteria or on the gymnasium scoreboard. esponding to a 9:27 a.m. call Feb. 25, police arrived at Epiphany of Our Lord Church, 1101 Jackson St., meeting a maintenance person acting in place of the complainant, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The worker told authorities he had discovered the hands and a piece of the veil from a Lady of Fatima statue broken off, presuming that an unknown heavy object, likely a hammer, did the damage. The employee found the hands and fragments scattered roughly two or three feet from the art work, Tolliver said, with the vandal’s handiwork resulting in as much as $3,000 in damages. Supposed slasher busted Police arrested a South Philly resident for his alleged knife use against another man in Bella Vista. Authorities arrived at Wings & More, 900 Washington Ave., Sunday evening and learned the victim had attempted to escort out of the establishment a male whose drinking had caused him to shout and become unruly, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Because of the alleged antics, the bar owner flagged the patron, leading to the decision to make him leave. While the exit process was going on, the complainant said the individual became enraged and pulled a knife from his pocket. The victim said the blade struck his face and left arm and that once other customers and the manager came to help, the purported attacker ran into a nearby restaurant. The parties followed the supposed knife wielder, Tolliver said, into the other establishment, with officers soon locating a utility knife and arresting the defendant, 30-year-old Carlos Caballero, also known as Noel Caballero, of the 700 block of Mifflin Street, without incident. They charged him with attempted criminal homicide, simple and aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of crime and making terroristic threats. The complainant received transport to Pennsylvania Hospital, where 20 stitches were needed for his face and arm lacerations.

Reported robber caught Police arrested a Whitman resident for her alleged robbery of a Pennsport store last week. The complainant, a security worker at Rite Aid, 10 Snyder Ave., reported at 8 a.m. Feb. 25 that he saw a woman selecting and concealing various merchandise in a black bag, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He added that when store employees confronted the shopper, she allegedly resorted to using force to make an escape attempt. She supposedly continued to do so until authorities arrived and arrested her without incident. They charged 51-year-old Alice Kane, of the 200 block of Jackson St., with simple assault, retail theft and robbery. She had not posted her $2,500 bail as of press time and awaits a March 17 court date.

South-of-South silliness Another woman failed in her struggle to keep her possessions in South of South Monday. At 7:55 p.m., the complainant was walking southbound on 18th Street from Christian Street when two figures approached her from behind, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The first offender grabbed her briefcase, leading to a struggle that resulted in his punching her once on the jaw. The blow knocked her to the ground, leaving the aggressor to grab the case, which contained a cell phone, a wallet, $120 and eyeglasses, Tolliver said. The victim noted the other individual did not engage in the assault but fled on foot with the first in an unknown direction. She described the attacker as black, 17 to 25 years old and having a medium to dark complexion and a thin build; and wearing a dark-colored hooded jacket. She tabbed the second as a black female having a thin build and wearing jeans and a black jacket with fur on the hood. Police are hoping that video footage can lead them to two men sought in a thwarted robbery attempt in South of South last month. Authorities met with a 26-year-old woman on the 800 block of South 19th Street Feb. 20, learning that at 8:30 p.m., two unknown males had approached her from behind and grabbed her purse. The complainant fought back and successfully kept them from taking her bag, though she did sustain minor injuries. The empty-handed suspects fled the area, with the woman last catching them heading west on Montrose Street. Authorities are looking for a man who struck a woman’s head in order to take her purse last month in Passyunk Square. The female was walking on the 1200 block of Ellsworth Street at 7:55 a.m. Feb. 12 when the unknown male approached her from behind, police said. Once he was extremely close to her, he struck the victim in the back of the head with an unknown object. Knocked to the ground, she would not prevent the aggressor from taking her purse, which he ripped from her shoulder before running north on 12th Street and crossing Washington Avenue. She received minor injuries that required her transport to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms. SPR

Room for improvement This winter’s “sneckdowns” along East Passyunk Avenue suggest room for growth. ■ By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

J

on Geeting, a writer with a trained eye on planning and public spaces, published a blog post with ThisOldCity. com on Feb. 3 that went viral. In it, he used dozens of photos of snowy East Passyunk Avenue intersections, highlighting the way in which the diagonally designed path cuts through street grids to create spaces that could be used more strategically. More than 40,000 Facebook shares, 1,700 Tweets and 185 comments later, Geeting found himself in the middle of a social media furor that all came from his long and exacting look on the spots along the avenue that are highly eligible for improvement. Nearly 50 residents, planners and concerned citizens filled the second floor of Adobe Café, 1919 E. Passyunk Ave., for “Streetfilms, Sneckdowns & the Pedestrian,” an event that Geeting and ThisOldCity.com founder, Geoff Kees Thompson, put together to capitalize on the momentum sparked by the post’s viral status. The two invited an esteemed panel to answer questions after the viewing of progressive planning films (courtesy of StreetFilms) and a presentation on the meaning of the post. The guest list included 1st District Councilman Mark Squilla, Community Design Collective’s Beth Miller, University City’s Prema Gupta, East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association’s David Goldfarb and the Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Utilities’ Andrew Stober. The post, essentially, showed what a “sneckdown” is and how they help point out existing patterns of pedestrians and motorists, especially after a healthy snowfall (a “sneckdown” is a snowy neckdown). When snow and slush go undisturbed for lack of plowing or shoveling, all kinds of triangular shapes extend from angular intersection curbs, often far out into the street. “The sneckdowns reveal the spaces that cars don’t use or need,” Geeting explained in his presentation. In the spaces that cars don’t need along the avenue, Geeting and Thompson propose small plazas for pedestrians and neighbors to enjoy city life. “It’s a way to get some more green space in the neighborhood: more street seating, more bike parking, and calm down the traffic,” Geeting said. “It’s good for business and it reduces the car footprint in the neighborhood.”

Jon Geeting, the author of the well-received post about maximizing East Passyunk Avenue’s public spaces, gave a short presentation on the potential benefits of more pedestrian plazas and green spaces along the stretch. P h o t o P r o v i d e d b y K at i e B o h r i

The good thing about these kinds of projects is that they’re not extremely expensive and sometimes relatively easy to get executed quickly and efficiently. Hot on the heels of the $500,000 East Passyunk Avenue Gateway project that’s set to break ground this year, it was recently announced that the intersection at 12th and Morris streets would receive a $300,000 facelift. A particularly wide and awkward intersection, the money from the city comes care of the Commerce Department, which is spearheading improvement and beautification efforts to strengthen East Passyunk as a commercial and residential corridor. “It’s mostly paint, big planters, big rocks, some café tables,” Geeting noted. “They’re not really too capital intensive and easy to get these things done fairly quickly.” Gupta, who has been successful with West Philly’s Baltimore Avenue neckdown improvements and in converting underused space outside of 30th Street Station into what is now known as “The Porch,” said “in some cases it was really easy and people wanted more horticulture and safer intersections.” Hinting at the mixed reactions that some neighborhoods experience in getting these

efforts off the ground, she added “some people really like their parking and some people don’t want their illegal parking messed with. We’re learning about it and learning from our neighbors and learning how to redesign and think bigger and better for the future.” UNFORTUNATELY, THESE THINGS take time and money, some more than others. And as Philadelphia continues to grow and improve, the cheaper and quicker things can accomplish a great deal, but they still take time and money. Take, for instance, the overhaul of Columbus Square Park, which will cost nearly $3 million. It’s a much bigger project and will take a great deal more fundraising and time. But looking at Geeting’s blog post and the “sneckdowns” that materialize regularly through this snowy winter, it seems pedestrian plazas and new green spaces could populate the avenue with far greater density. Easier said than done, say some. Who’ll maintain and care for these spaces in our neighborhoods? “People want to donate their time and do that,” Squilla said. “That’s a lot of work but I don’t see anyone getting turned away.”

There’s a lot of work that goes into these spaces even after they’re built. “If we don’t have friends groups and really have an interest in taking care of things, it’s difficult,” he argued. “We can’t just build it if no one’s going to maintain it.” Stober also pointed out that the City already spends thousands on street and curb maintenance, in some cases in ways they wish they wish weren’t obligatory. “We repave our streets somewhere between every 15 and 20 years, and major arterials we try to do between 10 and 20 years,” he detailed, pointing to a “strained capital budget.” “No one ever thought one of the great civic engineering challenges of the 21st century would be federally mandated curb ramps.” The federal order to convert sidewalk curbs to allow for greater access for handicapped individuals costs the City about $8,000 to $12,000 each to design and install. But one thing that seems clear is the changing needs and wants of civically-minded Philadelphians. When the City piloted bike lanes on Spruce and Pine streets in Center City, there was a great deal of opposition. Squilla, of Front Street and Snyder Avenue, reminded the audience that change, especially in South Philadelphia, takes time. “Right now people are considering bikes on the streets part of the streets. Change doesn’t come overnight,” he said. “If the city’s going to become a better and more walkable city, we need to find alternative modes of transports: bikes, scooters, car shares or better public transport options are out there for people to not have cars.” Of course, the age-old debate of the ease in which the City allows for drivers to park for very little and the power that car-drivers have in the debate of public space use (especially when it involves parking options) was discussed. And Stober defended the City’s low parking permit price by saying “You could wind up making life a lot more difficult for Philadelphians who really require a car and earn very little money,” and pointed toward “the person who has to drive because transit doesn’t serve them.” Squilla concluded with a note of hope for the future. “Our city’s growing, it’s going to grow, and we’re in a good position to make it grown, and all of these things that you’re suggesting are going to help it grow,” he said. CHRISTIAN STREET Y continued from page 1 this building since 1914,” Ellen Baker, the Christian Street YMCA board chair, said in her welcoming remarks. “We are so proud of the Christian Street Y’s heritage and contributions.” Williams shared some of the morning’s most potent words to honor the space’s cultural and personal significance. “There are people with great need and there are people who are still trying to sneak in,” he half-joked. “There are still people who need supervision and guidance. There may be new coats of paint, but there’s nothing that’s changed about the heart of this building.” During the first half of the morning’s proceedings, a line of a dozen toddlers with swimmies on their arms snaked through an audience that towered over and looked down at them with smiles. The young swimmers were a mix of genders and

races, and the significance was not lost on the First Deputy Commissioner of Parks & Recreation Susan Slawson. “This particular facility was one of the only places that allowed African-Americans to come in and play ball and swim,” she recalled. Referring to the young swim class, she added, “That was a picture of what was fought for. As we close this Black History Month, it is wonderful to see such a diverse set of kids, and that’s what the Christian Street Y is all about.” Johnson and Harris both shared memories of patronizing this particular Y and how the space was a safe haven for them as youths and as young adults. Johnson thanked the staff, for “making sure that this facility continues to be a beacon of life and hope in the South Philadelphia community.” He used to pay $1.50 to swim at this location, and the Y’s never been flush with funds. “There were some tough times for the Christian Street Y,” he recalled. “And we

were able to weather that storm to make sure that the Christian Street Y stayed open. “I am proud as the first African American councilman from this district. And I will keep my membership active because it means a lot to me to support this particular branch financially in order for young people to come to this facility.” He then pledged $5,000, and the site’s Executive Director, Michele Stevenson, rejoiced. “Because I attended pre-school and kindergarten upstairs, I am a son of the Christian Street Y,” Harris proclaimed. “This is not just a place for recreation where parents bring their children and where people work out. The Christian Street Y is built into the fabric of South Philadelphia and without this Y, the fabric of the community goes away. We have to do whatever it takes to make sure there are 100 more years.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. It’s a ‘Kake Over’

Tastykake celebrated its 100th birthday at its Naval Yard factory last week ■ By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

O

n February 25, 1914, the rst Tastykake factory pumped out 100 cakes on Sedgley Avenue in Germantown. Phillip Baur, whose father had recently sold the Bauer Brothers Bakery in Pittsburgh, teamed up with an egg salesman from Boston, Herbert Morris, with the idea that they’d bake and deliver fresh, individually wrapped cakes. One hundred years later, Tastykake pumps out nearly ve million cakes, donuts, cookies and pies daily. In 2010, Tastykake moved into a 345,000 square-foot bakery in The Philadelphia Navy Yard, 4300 S. 26th St. And this was the site for the celebration of a century of Krimpets and Kandy Kakes. The City of Philadelphia declared the day “Tastykake Day,” and the company honored the occasion by “Kaking Over” their hometown by way of 100 deliveries to local charities and first responders throughout the city, including City Hall, Red Cross, Philabundance, 3616 S. Galloway St., and fire and police officers. Kirby the Krimpet was on hand to assist. It was in ’11 that Tastykake merged with Georgia’s Flowers Foods and made its first strides into national consumption. “That has made us stronger to make sure that we’re here for another decade and become a national brand,” Paul Ridder, the company’s president, said. He requested a warm round of applause for the employees who bake, wrap and ship treats on a daily basis: “To the thousands of hard-working men and women who are dedicated to baking and delivering our products.” Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley was present to speak on behalf of Gov. Tom Corbett. “For a kid from Philly, this is really a special day, and I get to be a part of this wonderful celebration,” Cawley told the crowd in the company’s modern new factory entrance. He found a bit of patriotic pride in the company’s success: [Baur

and Morris] were just two Americans who had a dream.” In his place, 2nd District City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson sent Roi Ligon Jr., his legislative assistant, to present a citation from the Council of the City of Philadelphia. “We congratulate their anniversary and extend to all involved the sincere respect and admiration of the legislative body,” Ligon read. The 43-year-old is combining the contributions from her most prominent geographic locations for the South Camden Theatre Co., Inc. production of “Gemini,” the lauded 1976 play by fellow South Philly native Albert Innaurato. “I think I bring a little bit of extra truth to everything,” the product of the 2600 block of South Hicks Street said last week of her status as a performer in a South Phillyset piece. “I’m able to pull from my background to convey my enthusiasm for the material.” Through March 16, the Barrington, N.J. resident is playing Lucille, the widowed girlfriend of Fran, the fa-

In handling her role, DeRosa Lukaitis is seeing the creation as an amalgamation of many compelling personalities from her formative days in Marconi. “The show is definitely relevant today,” she said of the Obie Award winner, which enjoyed more than 1,800 Broadway performances from ’77 to ’81. “People like Lucille and Fran, for example, with their quirkiness and disposition, still exist, and I think the social aspects are pretty important to contemporary audiences, too.” DeRosa Lukaitis learned last year of the plan to stage “Gemini” when costuming “Awake and Sing!” for the company. Already having proven her acting passion by appearing in its “Fortune Cookies” and “The Night of the Iguana,” she adored earning the opportunity to advance her skills and reflect on her upbringing, particularly the influence of her grandmother, Eleanor Sacerdote. She has gained another valuable insight from participating, the knowledge that one should not question inherent talent. “I had tried to convince myself I was meant only for other duties, like being

behind the scenes and writing,” DeRosa Lukaitis, who for nearly seven years has helmed the Barrington-situated Lucky Nickel Theatre Co., an all-ages entity, and for three years has served as the owner and artistic director of the LNT Center for the Performing Arts, said. “Being on stage again just reminds me how much I love doing this sort of work, no matter how much I might have written myself off as an actress after turning my attention to working with children.” Infusing the brainchild of Innaurato, who will attend tomorrow’s presentation, with her self-belief, the thespian, who last year appeared in the film “Young Again,” has given herself another chance to champion her commitment to promoting quality works. That her current chore finds her doing so for a work based in her old stomping grounds gives credence to anyone who might contend “You can take the girl out of South Philly, but you can’t take South Philly out of the girl.” “It’s definitely intriguing to have this role,” DeRosa Lukaitis said. “I’m proud of what we’re trying to do and grateful to get back on stage.” THE ACTRESS REACHED the artistic point of no return as a precocious 8-year-old viewer of the original production of “Annie.”

Then a student at St. Monica School, 17th and Ritner streets, she loved seeing children on stage and fell in love with dancing three years later. Intensifying her ardor for the arts at Girard Academic Music Program, 2136 W. Ritner St., and The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, 901 S. Broad St., she knew nothing would prevent her from pursuing her obsession. “It was who I was,” DeRosa Lukaitis said of being an impressionable youth, a characteristic that yielded her first film role in ’86’s “My Little Girl” with James Earl Jones, Mary Stuart Masterson and Anne Meara. “I just had to be out there to explore my talent and drive.” Settling into adulthood, she became a consistent hire to recording artists coveting consummate dancers and eventually ventured across the Atlantic Ocean to study classical comedy at London’s City Literacy Institute. Desiring “grass and trees,” she left South Philly for Barrington in ’98 and has enjoyed a fruitful 14-year-marriage to Bella Vista-bred husband John, with whom she rears Gia, 13, Nicolas, 10, and Demetrio, 8. A founding member of The Waitstaff, the sketch comedy troupe that has induced hysterics through works like “The Real Housewives of South Philly,” she eventually came to crave less of an up-

front existence and more of a behind-thescenes identity. “Oh, I’d much rather work with kids than adults,” DeRosa Lukaitis, who last month wrapped “Oliver” and is overseeing “Snow White” for a May staging, quipped of the delights of engaging youngster’s ambitions. “It’s been really amazing for me to help many kids to come out of their shells and find peace. I am extremely passionate about building up their esteem and appreciation for their abilities.” The connoisseur of camaraderie, whose productions feature a handful of South Philly dwellers and whose own hand penned “Dolly for Sue,” an adaptation of “Annie,” looks forward to strengthening her integration into children’s lives and remains unsure if that will involve any more need to balance directing and producing duties with acting assignments. “LNT is my main priority no matter what,” DeRosa Lukaitis said. “However, after a show like ‘Gemini,’ who knows? I’ll probably continue to look for works with as much appeal and pull.” SPR For tickets, visit southcamdentheatre.org. Quotations From Mom

M

others like to impart wisdom to their kids. Mom was always issuing her favorite philosophical nuggets to us. “Laugh today, cry tomorrow,” was one of her favorites. That one, perhaps, made its biggest impression on me. It shaped my personality. Every time I laugh, I worry that I am setting the stage for some major catastrophe. What if I never laughed, I think, maybe nothing bad would ever happen in the world. To think, I’m personally responsible for tsunamis and flu epidemics, all because I chuckled while watching a rerun of “The Office” the other night. One has to admit that’s a worrisome responsibility. For some reason, fathers never believe it is their duty to philosophize to their kids. My father’s philosophy could be summed up in one succinct phrase: “Listen to your mother.” Dad always viewed me as a boxing sparring partner. My father fancied himself a prize fighter, although he admitted that in his only amateur bout, he was knocked out in the first round. Maybe that’s why by the time I was about 8, he decided that I should be his lifelong sparring partner. I couldn’t fight a lick and posed no challenge as Dad would dance around me throwing jabs and breathing heavily through his nose (apparently a requirement for boxers, but personally annoying to me). To give you an idea how one-sided this game was between Dad and me, if instead of boxing we were playing basketball, I would have been Red Klotz and the Washington Generals and he would have been the Harlem Globetrotters. Eventually Dad would tire and I would go back to reading the latest issue of The Sporting News. Mom had no time for such foolishness. She knew that Immanuel Kant and John Locke never wasted time having fun with their kids because they were too busy dispensing philosophy. It is a well-known fact that philosophers never shadowbox with their sons, but instead spend their time proving to their sons that, in fact, they don’t even exist. The approach of Easter reminds me that Mom liked to chastise me for not sitting through three hours of services on Good Friday. “You’ll sit in a movie for three hours,” she would say pointing her finger at me, “but God forbid, you should sit in church for three hours.” Now I spend my idle moments questioning why it is that I much prefer sitting in the Ritz Theater

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

with a big bag of popcorn to a nice afternoon at Stations of the Cross. Mom also had this complicated belief concerning what would happen if you dropped a utensil. Drop a spoon and Mom would shout, “We’re getting company and I don’t have a piece of cake in the house.” Actually her beliefs in this area were not only deeply rooted, but very specific. The identity of the company who would visit depended on just which utensil you happened to drop. Drop a fork and you were sure to get a visit from a second cousin on your father’s side. Not all of Mom’s quotes were original. She freely borrowed from some of the great thinkers of our time. One of her quotes, which seems particularly topical at the moment was “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” If she were alive, Mom would have been very pleased with the way March has roared in here in 2014. She also comforted herself with the well-worn phrase, “April showers bring May flowers.” Mom did not need any long- range forecast from Glen “Hurricane Schwartz” to predict the weather. The corn on her big toe was sufficient. She would have been the Cecily Tynan or Kathy Orr of local forecasting if wished, although it must be said instead of mobile weather labs, global satellites or sophisticated computers, all she would have needed was take off her shoe and check out her big toe. If you wanted Mom’s views on prejudice, she’d tell you, “There’s good and bad in all kind.” You might think it inconsistent with that statement, but she also firmly believed in the superiority of all people born in Naples and their descendants. It was probably just a coincidence, but Mom’s father happened to be born in Naples. When she questioned you about your tardy response to performing an errand, she requested and you answered, “It’s coming,” she would reply, “And so is Christmas.” If Christmas happened to be near, she would substitute Easter. I happened to be kind of slow in getting girlfriends (I know that surprises you), but Mom wasn’t worried I was doomed to bachelorhood. “There’s a lid for every pot,” she proclaimed. I’m not sure how my wife feels about being that particular lid. Mom always assured us we would only fully appreciate her when she abandoned us, a threat she made on at least a weekly basis by announcing her intention to take a “slow boat to China” (also the name of a popular song of that era). If the food cravings of a pregnant woman were not satisfied, Mom claimed the infant would be born with the mark of that particular food. She always insisted that’s why her friend Conchetta’s daughter was born with a strawberry on her nose. I asked Dad about that. “Listen to your mother,” he said. Phileas Fogg (David Niven) and Passepartout (Cantinflas) made revelry their mission, but did their tale truly merit the Best Picture Oscar for 1956?

Five Oscar misses ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

I

n the annals of Oscar history, few will claim that last year’s “12 Years a Slave” was an undeserving Best Picture winner. The same can’t be said of these Academy missteps.

1976 Did win: “Rocky” Should have won: “Network” Sorry, Philly, but as inspiring an underdog story as “Rocky” is, Sidney Lumet’s prescient TV-land saga knocks it out cold, standing close to “Citizen Kane” as one of the greatest of all journalism flicks. (In the running that year, as well, were “Taxi Driver” and “All the President’s Men,” which, truth be told, are also better than “Rocky.”)

1948 Did win: “Hamlet” Should have won: “The Red Shoes” There are surely worse Best Picture winners than Laurence Olivier’s “Hamlet,” as 1994 Did win: “Forrest Gump” the acting legend’s take on Shakespeare’s Should have won: “Pulp Fiction” tragedy is cinema’s finest. But when Sure, we’re still quoting Tom measured against Michael Hanks’s simple-minded, mid-20thPowell and Emeric Presscentury tour guide, but cinema burger’s masterpiece “The has been aping Quentin TaranRed Shoes,” a hypnotic tino’s magnum opus with account of art’s conmuch more frequency. The sumption of the artist, original narrative-twisting, there’s no comparison. pop-culture-loving, modern Dozens of subsequent crime masterwork, “Pulp Ficflicks, including “Black tion” is the most inimitable Swan,” are indebted to THANDIE NEWTONM fi lm to be constantly Xeroxed. this technicolor triumph. AND MATT DILLONM IN CRASHM

1956 Did win: “Around the World in 80 Days” Should have won: “The Ten Commandments” In a year of strong period epics, which also included nominees “Giant” and “The King and I,” “Around the World in 80 Days” was the weakest contender, presumably soaring to victory for its lighthearted accessibility. A better pick would have been Cecil B. DeMille’s biblical spectacle, which, historically, is trumped only by “Ben-Hur” in its genre.

2005 Did win: “Crash” Should have won: “Brokeback Mountain” “Brokeback” isn’t quite as good a film as its fans proclaim, nor is “Crash” as bad a film as its haters insist. But rarely has there been a wider divide between what won the big prize and what deserved it. Was it still too soon for the Academy to reward a gay romance? You bet your boots. Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Jefferson “People say weight-loss surgery makes a big difference in their lives. But what they don’t tell you is, it also makes a difference for everyone around them. For example, take my wife and three kids – 15, 13 and 9. For them, it’s meant fewer snacks and more exercise – as well as a whole new Dad. Today, I’m 140 pounds lighter. But the way it’s changed my life, that’s something you just can’t measure.” Paul had a sleeve gastrectomy, a laparoscopic procedure with short recovery times and an excellent record of success. Fran’s Carne di Maiale

Birthday plans

T

here is little doubt that Pennsauken, N.J. resident Fran Hyman enjoys a little creativity in the kitchen. This week’s offering, Carne di Maiale asse Vitello Piccata, is a perfect example. The finished product is simply a pork loin disguised as veal piccata, capers included. Once this kitchen masterpiece is finally plated, sit back and enjoy every flavorful morsel as the taste buds record delicious marks for the chef.

INGREDIENTS: 1 pork loin 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour 1/2 cup of chicken stock 1 tablespoon of shrimp scampi seasoning 1 tablespoon of black pepper 1 tablespoon of salt 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce 2-1/2 tablespoons of virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon of Parmigiano cheese 1 teaspoon of Dijon Pam for spraying

1 /2 cup of chopped spinach 1 pound of spinach pasta, cooked according to package directions, prepared al dente Juice of 1/2 of a lemon 1 tablespoon of capers 2 tablespoons of brandy

DIRECTIONS Cut the pork loin into 1-½-inch thick slices. Pound as one would with veal until it’s ¼-inch thick. Trim fat from the medallions. Season the flour with the salt, black pepper and scampi seasoning mix. Dredge the pork into the flour. Spray the frying pan with Pam. Heat frying pan over a high heat, and add a tablespoon of the olive

I

oil. Place the pork into frying pan, and brown on both sides. Remove before done, and hold on a plate. Add the remaining olive oil to the same pan. Add 2 tablespoons of the seasoned flour. Mix into a roux. Slowly add the chicken stock to pan, mixing it in to make a thick gravy. Add the Worcestershire sauce, followed by the brandy. Add the Dijon. Reduce until there

is a medium-thick gravy. Put the pork back into pan with the gravy for four minutes, or until done. Add the chopped spinach followed by the capers. When the pasta is ready, add its water to the pan to adjust thickness of gravy to suit. Before serving, add the lemon juice and cheese. Plate pork onto pasta, and cover with gravy.

he Philadelphia Flower Show, which runs through Sunday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, is the largest and oldest flower show in the world. I always enjoy attending this marvelous event where professional horticulturalists force flowers to bloom indoors, filling the air with an intoxicating scent. I think the best time to view orchids, roses and just about every flower in between is during the early dinner hour. The crowds thin out a bit. I like to arrive around 5 p.m., which means a late lunch. For those of you who live in South Philly, visit two of my favorite haunts: Sabrina’s Café and Santucci’s.

n weekends, brunch at Sabrina’s is first-rate. There is always a line, but one can call ahead for placement on a list. The host will give callers a time for their arrival. If going on an off hour, it will not be as mobbed. I like to build my own omelette or tuck

antucci’s is home to the square pizza. I enjoy a white pie with spinach, but I also think this restaurant serves some of the best salads in South Philly. The Caesar is authentic and the dressing and croutons are made in-house. The antipasto board is visually appealing and consists of assorted cured meats, cheeses, olives and crusty bread. I think my all-time favorite is the granny smith salad prepared with pickled red onions, imported Gorgonzola from Lombardy, candied walnuts, thinlysliced Granny Smith apples and bibb lettuce tossed with an apple cider vinaigrette. The spinach stromboli with homemade rich marinara served on the side should win an award, and one can also enjoy

ut the obvious choice for a meal during the Flower Show is the Reading Terminal Market. Anything one hankers for, from sushi to deli, is on offer from the various merchants and restaurants. It is hard for me to pick a favorite place because everything served in the market is too delicious and tempting. Wonton noodle soup with greens is high on my list. You can order this big bowl of goodness with either egg or rice noodles. Want a slice of pizza to munch while making your way among the merchants? By George has thin-crust pizza, and the dough is made fresh daily. I love the hoagies at Salumeria, including the vegetarian one made with imported Italian cheeses, marinated artichokes, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato and onion. I think the finest Jewish deli in the city

is Hershel’s East Side Deli. The corned beef, brisket and pastrami are made the old-fashioned way and are sliced by hand. Chopped liver and onion and tasty red bliss potato salad, along with half-done kosher pickles, round out the list. All sandwiches are served on crusty Jewish sandwich rye. Breakfast and lunch are served all day at the Down Home Diner. Short stack pancakes, with a side of applewood smoked bacon, a pretty good cheesesteak, a hot turkey platter, fried catfish and fresh salads are also on the menu. Molly Malloy’s opened a few years ago, and I immediately fell in love with its piping hot bowls of homemade soup, especially the leek and potato, Caesar salad and chicken pot pie. Tokyo Sushi has a small sushi bar and features rolls and sashimi with a few vegetarian options. There is always a long line at DiNic’s ever since the Travel Channel’s Adam Richman named its roast pork with provolone and broccoli rabe the finest sandwich in America. If craving something sweet, stop by Termini Bros. for a chocolate, vanilla or ricotta cannoli to go. Finally, there is Melt Kraft, which is one of the newest merchants in the market. It specializes in all sorts of grilled cheese sandwiches, roasted tomato and fennel soup and Boylan’s Old Fashioned soda pop. I have not yet reviewed Melt Kraft, but it deserves a visit. I have purchased the site’s handmade artisan fresh mozzarella, and it is downright delicious. Unlike some of his East Passyunk Avenue neighbors, he doesn’t have any international culinary experiences or James Beard Award nominations associated with his name. He did own a Passyunk Square-based restaurant simply named Kris, but now shares ownership of the East Passyunk Crossing establishment located at 1801-03 E. Passyunk Ave. with brothers Dominick and Joseph Leuzzi. The culinary leader of the trio bypassed the cooking school route. “I just started at a young age working in the front of the house, and was self taught,” he said. “I am more trained as a high-end chef.” The 41-year-old Bella Vista resident gained valuable knowledge by working at high end

Center City establishments such as the now-defunct Striped Bass. These days, Leuzzi said he enjoys preparing braised meats, bolognese while customers seem to love the Barbecue Sausage Bites. “We go through 100 pounds of sausage a week,” he said. “[The recipe] is something somebody can do from home.” As far as the sauce goes, that’s a top secret in-house recipe that the family inherited when they purchased the former Passyunk Tavern in 2008. There are plenty of bottles of it available for sale at the establishment.

INGREDIENTS: 2 to 3 pounds of Maglio’s hot and sweet sausage, skinned 4 ounces of Stogie Joe’s Tavern house made barbecue sauce Salt and Pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Place the skinned sausage on the baking sheet, and cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until cooked through.

Remove the sausage from the oven, and cut on a bias (1/2-inch thick). Place it back in the oven until crisp. Toss in two ounces of the barbecue sauce, and set the remaining two ounces on the side for dipping. Season with the salt and pepper, and top with the parsley. “Gone Too Soon” Like a comet blazing ‘cross the evening sky, Like a rainbow fading in the twinkling of an eye, Gone too soon. Shiny and sparkly and splendidly bright, Here one day, gone one night. Like a castle built upon a sandy beach, Like a perfect flower that is just beyond your reach,Gone too soon. Born to amuse, inspire and delight, Here one day, gone one night. Like the loss of sunlight on a cloudy afternoon, Like the sunset dying with the rising moon,Gone too soon, gone way too soon. Love Always and Forever, Mom and Dad

Sparky Mark A Girard Estate soccer star won an honor for helping to guide his college squad to glory. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

M

ark Casasanto Jr. has perpetually pursued renown for his soccer clubs but has never coveted individual merit. The 20-year-old acquired the former in the fall, as his Community College of Philadelphia Colonials captured their rst Eastern States Soccer League title and accepted the latter last week in receiving the Conference Player of the Year distinction. “I’m definitely proud to be a winner again,” the young man said Tuesday from his home on the 2400 block of South 20th Street. “As for getting an award, that’s an added bonus to our fantastic season.” The Girard Estate dweller and first-year attendee at the Center City-situated facility had begun his time there timidly, a partial product of lingering memories from injuries suffered while a Roman Catholic High School player and of enrollment at a new institution following a year at The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. Eventually earning the captaincy, he regularly logged 90 minutes per tilt and proved a focused factor in the squad’s championship plans. “I knew I’d be joining a solid team,” Casasanto said of last year’s league runner-up. “I just wanted to be a reliable leader and take on the pressure of helping us to win as much as possible. I think my interest in taking on the stress has been one think that’s helped me succeed.” Having aided the Colonials’ run to the regular season crown, he anticipated a thrilling playoff slate and rejoiced Oct. 30 when his unit topped Williamson and Trade 4-1 on penalty kicks. Notching a goal on his boot, he brought to completion his return to a sport that before his post-secondary school graduation hiatus had occupied him since age 3. Going from reluctant to raring as a collegiate athlete, he yearns to

build on last season’s success over the summer and fall, with peers from Roman and Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., set to suit up for the impending Division 1 junior college club. “Many times during the year, I needed to be in a leadership role, and I respected those opportunities,” the right fullback, who tallied four goals and six assists during the campaign, said. “That desire to help everyone to believe in themselves won’t go away, especially after what we achieved.” LOOKbe an apostle of positivity, Casasanto has attracted many disciples who have found themselves likewise infatuated with displaying

sportsmanship and orchestrating championship celebrations. Commencing his career with the Southeast Youth Athletic Association, Seventh Street and Packer Avenue, he benefited from his father’s coaching tutelage and quickly accepted soccer’s calling to take him from being a three-sport aficionado to a solo pastime practitioner. “The game definitely became something I felt I stood out in doing,” Casasanto, who in picking the globally adored endeavor kicked baseball and floor hockey aside. “Every practice and match, I wanted to be out there competing and growing.” Meshing masterfully with his mates, he captained the 2006 outfit that won Team of the Year kudos from the now-defunct Philadelphia KiXX and generated more attention in becoming an initial member of the South Philadelphia Soccer Club. Never one to downgrade the team concept in search of the limelight, he reveled with multiple indoor and outdoor groups in co-captaining city championship aspirations and United Junior Soccer League title quests. “I definitely have enjoyed being a competitor, and I really believe I’ve gained even more awareness of what it takes to make it through traveling,” Casasanto, whose

PRO SPORTS at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php wanderlust has found fulfillment through numerous stops, including a pair of medalwinning trips to the Keystone Games for Team Metro, said. “Getting that integration has been vital.” The heavily-sought star elected to trek outside of South Philly in attending Roman, with nine of his South Philadelphia Soccer Club Strikers colleagues likewise choosing the Center City site. Captaining the freshman squad, he gained offensive MVP honors even when missing time because of mononucleosis. Making the switch to varsity, Casasanto, who confessed he had known high school competition would intensify his physical preparation, quickly learned that his mental might would also have to be untiring, as he suffered a season-ending broken leg as a sophomore and a similar year-concluding concussion and neck sprain while a senior. He proved his commitment to the Cahillites in the latter matter by refusing to let Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia trauma doctors cut off his jersey to scan him, a decision that endeared him even more to the fans of the eventual Catholic League semifinalists. “I loved my time at Roman and really wished we could have won the title,” Casasanto, who scored the Coaches Award and Senior Choice Best Soccer Player plaudit in ’12, said. “I made great friends there, so that counts more than winning, though.” With recollections of his injuries nearly inescapable, he limited himself to playing in a men’s league while pursuing culinary interests at The Restaurant School. The instruction spawned immediate doubts, so he sought out Community College, where he has certainly enriched his athletic nature and become more of an influence for sister Julianna, a Penn Charter School s attendee who will extend her soccer a journey at Chestnut Hill College. j “I intend to ride out my time at CCP and see what happens,” Casasanto, a who w assists his father at the Northwest Philly-based Imperial Security, said of P the t immediate future. “I have so much love for the game that I definitely want l to t coach. There’s time to decide.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. jm Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/ C features. f

Holy Spirit, You who make me see everything and who shows me the way to reach my ideals, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You, who are in all the instances of my life with me, I, in this short dialogue want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones. Pray this prayer three consecutive days straight without asking for your wish. After the third day your wish will be granted. Promise to publish your dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted.

Prayer TO ST. jOSePh

(Over 1900 years old)

Oh, St. Joseph whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt, before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. Oh St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ. Our Lord so that having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesis asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name adn kiss Hia fine Head for me, and ask him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen With Ecclesiastical Approval Say for nine days for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of our Lord Jesus Christ...Make it known everywhere!
