leasing brochure released in early March has piqued the interest of thousands of South Philadelphians as developer Bart Blatstein prepares to invest in an eyesore at the corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue. The developer, famous throughout most of Philadelphia for his 2009 investment in Northern Liberties’ Piazza, has been working towards recruiting businesses into a multiple-tiered hub of mixed use for over a year now. And by late ’15,

the largest intersection south of City Hall could be poised to house a cinema, grocery store, fitness center and a mix of retail and restaurant spaces. “The piazza is a completely different development. When I developed there it was barren,” Blatstein said. “There was nothing there for blocks, and I had to create buzz.” Not so for this space. “A retail center is a process that takes time. You go after your group of tenants that you want, and there’s been tremendous interest,” he added with encouragement. “I’m very, very happy with the interest, and you take your time. A center like this

is like putting a puzzle together.” South Philadelphians are buzzing with its potential, and it will no doubt spark civic association and zoning meeting attendance with interested and concerned citizens and online talks. When local writer Albert Stumm of the Passyunk Post revealed hypothetical schematics by way of the leasing agent’s marketing efforts, the comment section lit up. There seems to be a portion of South Philadelphians crying foul: 1,000+ Facebook shares and 93 comments later and there are See WASHINGTON AVE. DEVELOPMENT page 10 >>

Attending to attendance To the Editor: When it comes to education, many youth are privileged enough in that they receive support and encouragement from caregivers on a daily basis. For others, we see much less fortunate situations. Whether it is a case of absent parents, deceased grandparents, incarcerated siblings or another circumstance, many youths are lacking the guidance and advice that they deserve. And as a result, many young adults are found stepping off track, dropping out of school and/or entering the workforce with limited skills that are crucial not only to secure adequate positions but also maintain them. According to recent data from the School District of Philadelphia, in South Philadelphia the six-year dropout rate of students was between 41 and 50 percent in 2006. Research has shown that there is a strong correlation between dropout rates, early illiteracy and lack of guidance, which is why Philadelphia is taking action. In Octo-

ber ’13, Project U-Turn launched an “Attendance Awareness Campaign. The campaign, coinciding with “Attendance Works, a national and state initiative, promotes the awareness of the important role that school attendance plays in achieving academic success starting with school entry. This message is critical, especially for parents and caregivers. Even as youth grow older and become more independent, caretakers play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job. Their mentorship is vital for Philadelphia’s youth. In addition to building a habit of regular attendance, mentoring has been linked to a myriad of intellectual and emotional development skills. These include but are not limited to: good decision making capabilities, time management and planning, occupational require-

ments and rational habits of mind such as critical thinking and reasoning skills. And mentors aren’t just useful in the classroom; they often are seen filling the void of an absentee parent. Days were numbered To the Editor: Tom Cardella seems bored and confused by the phrase “The Ides of March (March 13) and knows only that it has something to do with Julius Caesar. Well, if he had lived in Rome

n 44 B.C., he would have known exactly what the phrase means. In those days, the Romans measured their year based on the moon (lunar) and not the sun (solar) as we do today. Our word month actually comes from “moon. The old Roman calendar had only 10 lunar months with the months September, October, November and December coming from the Latin words for 7, 8, 9, and 10. They ignored the two wintertime months and began their new year March 1. The Romans divided their months into three sections depending on a particular observed phase of the moon. The Kalends (hence the word calendar) fell on the first day of the month. The Nones were usually the 5th but sometimes the 7th, and the Ides were the 15th but sometimes the 13th. The Ides always fell on the day of the full moon. All the days after the Ides were numbered by counting down towards the next month’s Kalends. Thanks to William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar, we have the soothsayer’s warning to Caesar: “Beware the Ides of March! We know he did not listen and the rest is history. Gloria C. Out of luck Police arrested a West Passyunk man on St. Patrick’s Day for his alleged shooting of two males. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

S

ix months after releasing surveillance video, authorities detained 28-yearold Clifton Morris, of the 2600 block of Emily Street, Monday. They have charged the West Passyunk dweller with attempted murder, aggravated assault and related offenses for his supposed shooting of two men last summer. At 1:20 a.m. Sept. 9, the complainants started walking to their vehicle after leaving Clifton Morris a Manayunk bar when multiple shots hit them, police said, with the weapon wielder fleeing on foot. Tips poured in the next day, and law enforcement figures tabbed Morris as the suspect, arresting him without incident half a year later.

Role reversal Customers typically pull weapons in disputes with store owners, but a West Passyunk proprietor landed in trouble for allegedly using a gun to threaten two patrons Monday. At 7:38 p.m., police met the female complainant and a female witness at New Mart Groceries, 1848 W. Passyunk Ave., learning they had become involved in a verbal dispute with the aforementioned businesswoman over a lottery ticket, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. During the encounter, they claimed she barked “Get out of my store” and pointed a silver handgun at the complainant. The woman told the other female to leave the store while she called authorities, for whom she identified 27-year-old Ye Zhao upon their arrival. Police recovered a loaded firearm and arrested the resident of the 1800 block of West Passyunk Avenue, whom they charged with possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and making terroristic threats.

A malicious cycle

Authorities arrested an alleged knife carrier in Newbold Saturday morning. Meeting the male complainant at 9:30 a.m., police learned he had been exiting the Family Dollar Store, 1700 Washington Ave., when a stranger approached him for help in fixing a bicycle tire, Detective

Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man offered advice and attempted to enter his truck, upon which time he stated the foreign figure hurled obscenities at him, pulled out a knife that he pointed at his midsection and threatened to stab him. The shaken individual ran to the other side of his vehicle and phoned for help, with the alleged man supposedly fleeing northbound on 16th Street from Washington Avenue, Tolliver said. Police arrived shortly afterward and arrested 29-year-old Cosmo Diciurcio, who had supposedly returned to the area just as they had stopped. They charged the resident of the 900 block of Ritner Street with possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, making terroristic threats and harassment.

Owners, keepers Thanks to help from his friends, a man was able to reclaim stolen possessions in Passyunk Square Friday. Walking along Seventh and Morris Streets at 11 p.m., he had an encounter with an unknown male who allegedly tried to remove money from his pockets, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The complainant escaped and fled to his home, but the eager figure supposedly followed and caught up with the individual as he reached the residence. The chaser reportedly took cash and a cell phone from the complainant, whose friends opened the door to his abode, upon which time he grabbed the offender, telling his acquaintances the man had robbed him, Tolliver said. The friends recovered the items from the alleged thief and released him right away, but officers surveyed the area after receiving flash information and stopped 20-year-old Justin Weikel on the 700 block of Watkins Street, arresting him after positive identification from the complainant. They charged the resident of the 2400 block of South Third Street with robbery and theft.

Officer arrested The Philadelphia Police Department arrested a 17th District officer for his alleged involvement in a year-old incident. On March 12, 33-year-old Kevin Corcoran turned himself in to Internal Affairs following a special investigation by the decontinued on page 10

Tapped TEDx talkers

Four South Philadelphians are set to give talks on the theme “The Workshop of the World.” ■ By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

EDx Philadelphia is one of the hottest tickets in town for city enthusiasts eager for fresh and creative ideas about how to return our urban home to its past glories. TED is a nonprot organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading,” and it started as a four-day conference in California nearly 30 years ago. TEDx is a local, self-organized manifestation of the same goal and this year, Philadelphia’s third year of programming focuses on the phrase “The New Workshop of the World.” Four South Philadelphians, with extremely diverse backgrounds and specialties, are slated to give talks: Christopher Bartlett, Geoff DiMasi, Terry Gillen, and Austin Seraphin. Their respective command over their fields is a stunning testament to the range of diversity present in the area. The newest addition to the South Philly family is Seraphin, an inspiration to abled and disabled neighbors alike. Seraphin’s blind and his only visual receptors are bits of light and color. He’s been dubbed “an accessibility consultant,” with his lifelong fascination with technology, programming and computers leading to work with companies and organizations to improve aspects of access. “I’m planning on talking about accessibility and my own experiences using different technologies and the potential that we have to become a really accessible city,” the Swarthmore native and two-year resident of Hawthorne’s 12th and Fitzwater streets said. “It’s been really smooth – a lot better than I thought,” he admitted. “Transportation can be an issue but you get through it. That’s a big point I’m going to make.” The tech-obsessed programmer learned to teach a computer what to do at the age of 7. But “getting the iPhone was big,” he says. It opened his world. “I think it’s an equalizer. A blind person can go and do things pretty much the same way as a full-sighted person can.” But it’s his forays into the art world that have attracted some big fans: he and Sonia Petruse put together a groundbreaking campaign to let the blind experience graffiti (“Blind people don’t really get to see it and it’s a subversive but real art form that’s expressive,” he said) and his volunteer work at the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology has really made waves. “Museum accessibility is a hot thing,” he said. “And that’s why I’m really excited because these Touch Tours are really break-

ing ground.” The exhibits allow visually disabled culture-seekers a rare opportunity: to let their hands take them to ancient Egypt and Rome. Replicas of ancient artifacts let the blind actually enjoy a museum by simply doing something forbidden at most esteemed halls of preservation: See with their hands. Barlett, the executive director of the Center City-situated William Way Community Center, has been around a bit longer. In fact, he did something ambitious when he was young. A lifer, he decided to stay put in Philadelphia until he could see the change he set out to make. “I made a decision in my early 20s – to judge the success of my life based on the impact I have on Philadelphia,” he said. “I may move away, but I want to evaluate my life based on the impact I’ve had here.” BARLETT PERFORMED THE duties of emcee in the two previous Philadelphia installments of TEDx, a role he was thrilled to fulfill. “Being a good TED host is about loving Philadelphia, and I’m such a lover of Philadelphia,” he said, revealing his talk will be about capturing the success of minority neighborhoods in Philadelphia, the Gayborhood and Chinatown, and drawing parallels for why they thrive. “What makes these cultural districts work and what makes these neighborhoods thrive?” he asks. One of Philadelphia’s leading experts on LGBT issues, the Passyunk Square resident

even ruminated on the potential of a migrating border of the Gayborhood, wondering if 12th and Passyunk could be Philadelphia’s Gayborhood in 20 years. Not far off from that intersection is the home base for DiMasi’s P’unk Avenue, 1168 E. Passyunk Ave., a collective whose mission is purposefully broad. Technology is a tool he and his team use to build bridges and lift up organizations and businesses through creating websites and design campaigns. “Livable and inspiring places, help people stay well and to create knowledge,” he puts simply is the mission of P’unk. The artist-by-trade bought the office’s headquarters 14 years ago and founded his creative agency nine years ago on April 1. It spurred him to co-found the Passyunk Square Civic Association, initiate conversations and community-building projects and breathe some life into a then-underdeveloped East Passyunk Avenue. The father of two now calls Collingswood, N.J. home but rejects the notion this makes him no longer a part of a neighborhood to which he has extraordinarily long ties. From the top floor of his dual-address offices, one can see City Hall (where his great grandfather was a judge) and the spire of St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi, 714 Montrose St. (where his grandmother was baptized and married). The co-founder of the thriving co-working space in Old City, Indy Hall, will touch on the conference’s central theme: “I’m giving a talk on the way in which people operate, the human aspect of the workshop

of the world. I’m really interested in how people organize themselves, how they communicate with each other.” Perhaps one of the most esteemed authorities on the topic of job creation through her longstanding work in The Philadelphia Navy Yard, Gillen plans to talk about her experiences working with Gov. Ed Rendell and Mayor Michael Nutter to create jobs. She’ll share lessons learned and talk about an upswing of success the city’s experienced. “We had trouble convincing businesses to be here,” she says of days past, and looks at Comcast as a glowing beacon for what Philadelphia can still accomplish. “Comcast presents us with a real opportunity to have a major corporation’s headquarters in the city, right in the city, and a company that’s on an upswing,” she gushed. “It’s a huge opportunity for the city. It can help us brand ourselves as vibrant and as a job center.” The resident of the 2300 block of Naudain Street helped illuminate the potential in March 28’s day-long conference. “Workshop of the World talks about a time when Philadelphia was great,” she said, alluding to Philadelphia’s specialty manufacturing heyday of the 19th century. “These TED topics talk about how we can get back to that time and that level of greatness. And I think it’s a good question to ask because it sets the bar really high, and we need to set the bar really high.” SPR

WASHINGTON AVE. DEVELOPMENT continued from page 1 rants about gentrification, inappropriate use of space and requests for specifics. However, there’s a great deal of enthusiasm from neighbors who see the intersection as an ideal site for much-needed neighborhood resources. Specifically a grocery store, the primary request by most accounts. The nearby structures include The Rock School for Dance Education, 1101 S. Broad St., the Marine Club Condominiums, 1100 S. Broad St., a largelyunused Monro Muffler lot, 1004 S. Broad St., and a McDonald’s, 914 S. Broad St. The intersection, functioning as a new hub of commerce, transportation and social engagement, will bear a great deal of influence on homeowners and renters within a usable radius. Metro Commercial Real Estate, Inc.’s, the exclusive leasing agency, has marketing material that reports a ’13 estimation of the space’s service area population at 313,324, and a seemingly current “daytime population” of 474,434. Pam Zenzola, president of the Passyunk Square Civic Association and resident of the 1300 block of Federal Street, is probably one of the most excited about it. “When I see Broad and Washington, immediately what comes to mind is jobs. Construction. Whatever the building or development is going to be, we can’t afford to have an empty lot,” she said with excitement. “We have schools that need help. I see that and I think revenue for the city.” Many of the residents who have been around for some time are simply excited that a block that’s remained empty is getting put to good use. “It’s a lot that I have, my whole life, seen vacant. Well, now something is actually going to be there,” Andrew Dalzell, the South of South Neighborhood Association’s president and resident of the 2000 block

of Fitzwater Street, gushed. “The time is now and [Blatstein] sees the opportunity and that’s awesome. It represents a massive opportunity for South Philly and for all of those neighborhoods.” IT IS QUITE an intersection; a natural boundary that divides SOSNA from Hawthorne, and Passyunk Square from Newbold and Point Breeze. It’s one of the last large open spaces left in South Philly, and some residents are worried that a big rubric of corporate retail boxes will be a blight to the community, at least aesthetically, if not also in ominous macroeconomic circumstances. “The parking lot is not going to be visible from Broad and Washington,” Blatstein reassured on the visual front. “Too much [parking]? I’ve rarely heard that complaint. It’s just not practical for families. If they’re going to get a zip car and go shopping, they need a place to park. You need that amenity.” Anthony Coratolo, the newly-elected Newbold Neighbors Association president and a resident of the 1300 block of South Hicks Street, is optimistic about the desirable incoming services. “If the selection of stores and amenities is well-balanced, that’s key, too,” Coratolo said. “At this point any grocery store would be good. Especially this side of Broad Street. On the other side, you have East Passyunk Avenue, where businesses are popping up and staying alive.” “We need grocery stores. Period. End of story,” Dalzell concurred. “Wegman’s, South Philly Food Co-Op, Trader Joe’s, whatever — we need it. We’ve heard it loud and clear from our neighborhood that’s saying ‘We need grocery stores.’ Broad and Washington’s a good spot for it.” It seems clear that South Philadelphians will be making their voices heard and that Blatstein will be listening. “I understand. information as they want and as much time as they want,” the lifetime Philadelphian admitted. “And we’re working together. It’s a collaboration.” “It absolutely behooves them to come before a civic,” Zenzola said on Blatstein’s willingness to be receptive to citizens’ needs. “Even if it’s not required, to suddenly get beat down by people calling City Hall and their councilman, you might as well get a feel upfront for what the community wants or doesn’t want.” “It’s going to be a question of what civic participation is going to be,” Dalzell agreed. “How much leverage is the community going to have on this?” The key to success will be early and organized arguments at key civic engagements. “Responsible development is where you include services for the community,” Coratolo said. “Hopefully, they’ll consider that there are a lot of different needs and a variety of price points, different types of retail, and engage the community in figuring out what they really need.” The neighborhood civic that will host this new hub is Hawthorne, and the Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition’s officers, seemingly, declined questions for privacy’s sake. “I’ve already met with them,” Blatstein said. “Like in every development I do, no matter what it is, I’m available at any time to meet with any groups that want to talk. I’m happy to spend as much time as necessary, and that’s how I’ve always operated.” To be sure, we’re as many as 20 months away from a ribbon-cutting. But the process has been going on longer than one would imagine, and it’s picking up momentum. “These things don’t happen overnight,” Blatstein added. “Good things don’t happen overnight.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevertjmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. POLICE REPORT continued from page 6 partment and the District Attorney’s Special Investigations Unit. They contend the nine-and-a-half-year veteran, on duty near 13th and Lombard streets at 2 a.m. March 31, 2013, encountered a group of people on the sidewalk who dealt with his verbal abuse from him after one member stated he had made an illegal turn. Allegedly Kevin exiting his vehicle, he Corcoran reportedly slapped a cell phone from one of the people and barked “Don’t f##?!g touch me” as he continued to walk toward the owner. Corcoran then supposedly pushed the male, grabbed his chest, threw him against the side of his police vehicle, handcuffed him and threw him into the back of the automobile, the report states. He then reportedly sped off with the victim in the back seat. The complainant states Corcoran drove him to an unknown street off North Broad Street and learned the officer was arresting him for public intoxication, though he prepared no required paperwork for a public intoxication arrest, had no evidence the victim was inebriated and was in fact driving in the opposite direction of the 17th Police District where Corcoran was assigned. The detained figure told Corcoran he had never been arrested before and was an Operation Iraqi Freedom war veteran. After hearing this, Corcoran supposedly returned to the area of 13th and Rodman streets and released the man. Authorities charged him with false imprisonment, obstructing administration of law and official oppression. SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. o a quick review of this year’s Sweet Tooth runners-up, and excluding the water ice category, there is a common theme: Termini Bros., 1523 S. Eighth St. and 1538 Packer Ave., appears in each one. While they may have fallen a few votes short of victory in the other categories, the establishment known for its “Gold Medal Pastry” can now celebrate its Readers’ Choice triumph in the cookie discipline. options ranging from chocolate chips to pignoli cookies with imported nuts to the signature collection. But the cookies are just one of many goodies this Passyunk Square baking institution has mastered through its 90-plus years and three generations of experience. Brothers Joseph and Vince Termini Jr. are

efore walking into DiBruno Bros., in the Italian Market, 930 S. Ninth St., it’s a good idea to prepare the taste buds for a culinary journey across the Atlantic Ocean. On many days, including a recent springlike Saturday, customers were lined up from one end of the store to the other getting a crash course sampling a wide variety of products. After all, the establishment that dates back to 1939 bills itself as being “culinary pioneers.” The system seems to be working to perfection as the Bella Vista establishment has been served with top honors in the Italian specialty store category. “We try to do our best with every customer, before they take the product home,” assistant manager Joe Green said. “Everybody who works here is very educated. “We try to stay at the forefront with what we are offering. We are trying to remain current, and not rest on our laurels.”

hen someone typically mentions the name Frank in these parts, the rst assumption is that they may be referring to the chairman of the board, Frank Sinatra. However, as much as people wanted the late legendary crooner to be from South Philly, Hoboken, N.J. was his town. Frank Palumbo, on the other hand, made his mark by opening a namesake restaurant that was known as a showplace for Italian food and stars, including Sinatra. A 1994 re destroyed the landmark. When Lou Galdo decided to get in the catering hall business in ’99, he wanted to do things just like Frank did. Fifteen years later, Galdo’s, 1933 W. Moyamensing Ave., also is earning patrons’ high marks. “I am humbled,” Galdo said of the Readers’ Choice honor. “I am very honored the people of South Philly voted us No. 1. Winning an award in South Philly that has to do with food is a great honor because it’s the mecca of dining.” Galdo said more than 50 percent of his business comes from South Philadelphia, but customers also come from Washington Township, N.J., Delaware and Northeast Philly, to name a few. The facility has been home to a never-ending variety of events ranging from the South Philly Review’s first Pizza Olympics, funerals, showers, fundraisers and a variety of entertainment. “Wedding receptions are our speciality, Galdo said. “When I built this, my dream was to recreate a quality facility like Palumbo’s. Nobody could fill the shoes of Frank Palumbo.” The Waterfall Room decorated in second while Swan Caterers reserved third. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

hocolate ganache, oreo and red velvet cupcakes are just a few of the selections sitting in the display case at Potito’s, 1614 W. Ritner St. Many customers must’ve been very hungry when they saw best cupcakes on the ballot as the Girard Estate establishment has been delivered the top prize. “To me, it’s one of the highest honors I can receive because it’s an award given to us by our customers,” owner/baker Matty Benigno said. “We are just happy to keep our Potito tradition going. We pride ourselves on quality customer service, and the variety that we do.” The South Philly location, which is one of four with a fifth opening in Wildwood Crest later this spring, is a family affair with Matty’s wife Cristina assisting with the ownership responsibilities of the baking operation that her parents, Carmen and Maria Potito, started in 1985. Antonio Potito, the 81-yearold father of the late Carmen, is the one who usually gets the daily baking process started every morning as early as 5 a.m. It includes making the award-winning zeppoli that have been extended through the weekend. There are many more names that belong on the thank-you list, but like an Oscar acceptance speech, Matty summed things up. “I want to thank all of my employees because they are a very important part of our team,” he said. Frangelli’s Bakery mixed a second-place batter while Termini’s made a tasty thirdplace appearance.

Arriving for an apprenticeship at the Arden Theatre Co., the now-28-year-old has certainly sewn up such surety, as she has come to design wardrobe for the location and numerous other entities, including Azuka Theatre, which is presenting “Skin & Bone” through Sunday. “I’m so grateful for and humble about my opportunities,” the much-courted costumer said last week from her Dickinson Square West abode. “They’ve meant chances to engage with people who not only are brilliant but are likewise enthused about creating great work.” Always thrilled to enter a play’s universe with curiosity and care, Fritz has found herself especially excited to contribute to “Skin & Bone,” the second element of playwright Jacqueline Goldfinger’s Southern Gothic trilogy, because of its impressive script and inclusion of talented females, including fellow South Philly resident Amanda Schoonover. Centering on bed-and-breakfast-operating sisters Midge and Madge, the 1990s-set offering has enabled her to promote the sense of “visual magnificence” that cinematic and theatrical audiences often skirt so as to focus on the acting. “There’s definitely inherent challenges when taking on modern material, but I love tackling projects and reinventing worlds,” Fritz said, noting the siblings’ garb as a study in confidence and weariness.

“Depth is always there for us to notice, and that often becomes apparent through dress.” With an art studio and costume shop in her quarters, the workaholic never lacks for enthusiasm, taking cues from production teams to mesh their input with her consideration for the compelling conveyance of characters. A repeat hire for various companies, she is reveling in her inaugural job for Azuka. “New works really interest me,” she said of the handling of “Skin & Bone” at The Off-Broad Street Theater. “A play by a woman and featuring women in powerful roles? How could I not enjoy this?” Though she has amassed an engrossing and ever-expanding resumé, Fritz confessed to dwelling on finding the right fit for her skills. Fortunately for purveyors of riveting tales, more often than not that has meant pairing their visions with her visuals. “Each play is its own thing,” she said. “There’s a realm of possibilities every time, and I’m thrilled to do the exploring.” AS AN UPSTATE New York inhabitant, Fritz gravitated toward narratives early on, deeming herself “a bookish kid” and, as an ambitious third-grader, answered the “What do you want to be?” inquiry with

“I’d say I made a great choice by filling out the Arden materials,” Fritz said with a laugh, adding the stint taught her about numerous disciplines and gave her insight into the workings of Philadelphia’s theatrical presence. As her collegiate career played out, she gained confidence and an initial stitch of renown, even becoming a trainer for stage-stoked freshmen. With a literary agent looking for her to compile her views and through her design prowess, she appreciates her current patch of fruitful endeavors and yearns to take on more tasks. “At times, I feel life is a big ‘I don’t know,’” Fritz said, “but everything feels incredibly possible.” SPR For tickets, visit azukatheatre.org.

he Senate recently blocked the confirmation of Debo Adegbile to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. Senator Pat Toomey led the charge against Adegbile, and his Democratic counterpart Bob Casey joined with six other Democrats to finish the job. Another victory for truth, justice and the American Way. There is a rumor that at least one senator broke a bone in his wrist when trying to slap himself on the back. Who is Adegbile? Why has his nomination aroused so much enough emotion in the Senate? He was raised by his single Irish immigrant mother. His father was Nigerian. We like to brag in America that the opportunity is there to overcome the handicaps that life sometimes places upon us. Adegbile, one would think, fit that profile. He got his law degree and rose up the ranks to become the senior counsel on the staff of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. In 2008, as a member of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, he argued in defense of the Voting Rights Act before the Supreme Court. And then he took a career move that is costing him big time. He became a visible force in trying to get the death sentence of notorious convicted Philadelphia cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal overturned. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund had already been deeply involved in Abu-Jamal’s case when Adegbile arrived on the scene, but he played a key role. Abu-Jamal’s death sentence was vacated by the court because of improper jury instruction. Adegbile argued unsuccessfully the verdict should be overturned because of “racial discrimination” by the jury. To understand the deep feelings surrounding this case, you have to have lived in this city when it all went down on that fateful night of Dec. 9, 1981. Officer Daniel Faulkner was shot dead while conducting a traffic stop on Abu-Jamal’s brother. Abu-Jamal himself was injured. He was found guilty of having fired the fatal shot, and the case became an international sensation. Abu-Jamal had been a member of the Black Panthers Party, a noted journalist and head of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists. He became the poster boy for the “injustice” of the judicial system and for doing away with capital punishment. Although upon appeal his death sentence was vacated, Abu-Jamal’s

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

murder conviction was upheld. While in prison, he continues to publish books and commentaries. A film was produced proclaiming his innocence. During this time Maureen Faulkner, the slain officer’s widow, the Fraternal Order of Police and some of the media fought against the Abu-Jamal publicity onslaught. In some ways, the case became a scab over the City’s race relations that has never quite healed. Along came the president’s nomination of the lawyer most closely identified in Abu-Jamal’s defense, and the scab has once again been picked raw. I am the son of a decorated Philadelphia cop and have never wavered in believing Abu-Jamal got a fair trial and deserves to be behind bars. Although I’m against capital punishment, mainly because the sentence depends less on the guilt of the individual, than the amount of money one has to spend on a good defense lawyer, I have always felt Abu-Jamal was the wrong person to make that case. During the ’90s, I hosted a Sunday morning radio talk show on WWDB-FM. One morning in the midst of my heatedly arguing that Abu-Jamal was rightly convicted of murder, someone identifying herself as Ramona Africa called into the show. She claimed to have evidence proving Abu-Jamal’s innocence. I challenged her to get it to me and I would put her on the air with it. I am still waiting for the “evidence.” I have always thought that Maureen Faulkner has waged a courageous battle, the kind of which her husband would have been proud. I also believe, from a political standpoint, the president’s nomination of Adegbile was a losing fight he could ill afford now. Despite my feelings, I think the Senate was wrong in rejecting the nomination. In America, everybody — no matter how heinous the crime — deserves the best legal representation. Emotions have run so high, one would have thought Adegbile had murdered Faulkner. Toomey and the opposition say they agree every defendant deserves the best legal representation, but then pay only lip service. Toomey claims Adegbile went outside the bounds of a defense counsel in vigorously defending Abu-Jamal. Nonsense. If Adegbile is passionate in arguing a case, I want him on our side. If you think he’s an SOB for taking Abu-Jamal’s side and doing it so well, I want him to be our SOB this time around defending all our civil rights. By rejecting the nomination, the Senate has said. Any talented, ambitious attorney should now understand it’s best to avoid taking a case involving high profile unpopular defendants or causes or it might negatively affect your career. Abu-Jamal is the guilty party, not the man who defended him. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

The Sullivans caught in a moment of joy in “In America”: Sarah (Samantha Morton) Christy and Ariel (sisters Sarah and Emma Bolger) and (Johnny) Paddy Considine. .

Five great Irish movies ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

W

hether set in Ireland or crafted by Irish filmmakers, these flicks make for perfect post-St. Patrick’s Day viewing.

In America n America” poignantly follows an Irish family as they immigrate to the U.S., and land in a rundown New York apartment complex. Led by Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine (with no less credit offered young and superb Sarah and Emma Bolger, reallife sisters who play sisters on screen), the cast is exemplary. What makes the movie essential viewing is the backstory involving Irish director Jim Sheridan, who based the tale on his own past and wrote the script with his daughters.

“I

The Crying Game hough remembered most for the revealing money shot heard ’round the world, “The Crying Game,” which focuses on the love triangle of IRA soldier Fergus (Stephen Rea), his ill-fated counterpart Jody (Forest Whitaker) and transgender hairdresser Dil (Jaye Davidson), should be singled out as a starkly original thriller, helmed by Irish director Neil Jordan. The film is streaked with political unrest, and while it was groundbreaking in its time, it ages remarkably well.

T

Bloody Sunday he movie that made Paul Greengrass an industry name to be reckoned with, “Bloody Sunday” recounts Northern Ireland’s 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings, and focuses on Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt), a politician who organizes the story’s doomed civil rights march. Though initially made for TV, “Bloody Sunday” was a Sundance smash, and it announced Greengrass as a master of handheld-cam immediacy.

T

Hunger efore he confronted history with “12 Years a Slave,” filmmaker Steve McQueen burst on the scene with this unnerving masterwork, which tells the true tale of imprisoned IRA martyr Bobby Sands (a then-unknown Michael Fassbender) and the behind-bars hunger strike he organized in protest. McQueen turns even the ugliest moments into jolts of audiovisual artistry, and he hasn’t topped himself since.

B

Once s bittersweet as the musical it inspired, John Carney’s “Once” takes a poetic and naturalistic approach to blooming love, shining a light on two Dublin-based musicians (real-life sweethearts Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová) who rock each other’s lives despite being together for a short while. Penned and performed by the stars, the music is as memorable as the movie. SPR

ON THE SCENE

Fashionable conversation With today marking the spring's arrival, an East Passyunk Crossing boutique owner/designer discusses what to expect this season.

SPR: What do you like about the East Passyunk Crossing area from a fashion perspective? NS: “A lot of things are handmade, which is really cool. In here it’s the same too; everything is one of a kind and handmade. I have my studio right here. This avenue is really bumping with creativity.” SPR: What are some trends for this spring? NS: “I feel like the word 'trend' is kind of overused. You’re not going to wear a whole outfit (of this year’s trends). I like mixing it up with the little things, mix in stuff from last year. Floral prints for spring are always in. Denim, cute high-waisted shorts from the last couple of years are still pretty popular. Throwback to the '70s with a little crop top, which I sell a lot of here, or a tube

top or corset with denim-dyed shorts. Now it’s almost like a rocker style with the studs and embellishments, which is really hot.” SPR: What are some things you are trying to infuse into your own boutique this season? NS: “I am definitely introducing more vintage into the shop. I always kind of had it here but now I’m reconstructing a lot of vintage pieces and putting them together with pieces I make here. That’s also an awesome trend, mixing a really cool vintage dress with, say, your new pair of shoes. Vintage doesn’t go out of style if you mix it in right.” SPR: What’s a trend or something that’s been out there for a while that you think may have been overdone, or has run its course? NS: “Some people tend to think the tighter the better, but that’s definitely not always the case. You can wear tight and be really cute and pull it off, but if it’s ill-fitted that’s not trendy. Keep it sophisticated and classy sexy. That’s a but a little se one." big one. SPR: If you SP are heading This outfit from out for a the K. NS: “Right now I am doing a lot of oversized, flowy, layered pieces, with a cute little blazer or a jacket. I was just in L.A., where it’s actually warmer, and I wore a flowy, layered dress with a cute denim jacket, which never go out of style, and some cute ankle boots. “ SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/ news/features.

Kathleen’s Chicken Rollups

Sampling stations

T

H

he idea of making plain chicken breasts without any seasonings may result in a blah and bland feeling around the dinner table. Add some flavorful ingredients to the recipe, and that desire to call up the local take-out establishment to save the night will become a passing thought. Kathleen Valle, of the 2600 block of Dudley Street, uses a variety of different ingredients, including prosciutto and bell pepper, to give her Chicken Rollups that tasty spark. It’s one of those dishes that will help fill the void while waiting for the spring barbecue season to come around. SPR

The Strip Joint ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

T

he American steakhouse has been a tradition since the mid-19th century. What I like about such a site is simple: you know what the menu will be, there will be a seafood dish or two, side dishes are extra and the cocktails are usually first-rate. Several months ago, SoWe, located at 22nd and Carpenter streets, morphed into a steakhouse. But unlike others in the city, The Strip Joint, as it was re-christened, is moderately priced. Actually, I think it is more like a neighborhood tavern/restaurant that features beef, a pork dish and some seafood. The dining room is painted bright red and features a long bar, a knowledgeable bartender and, huzzah, a menu that you can actually read! The print lacks the fancy fonts and small type so many restaurants have adopted. The brunch menu is on the flip side. Dinner includes a house salad and french fries; this is nice. Our server showed us to a table by the window, and we settled in. The tables are covered with brown paper and set with linen napkins. Cocktails such as a Maker’s Mark Manhattan ($10) and Blue Coat martini ($11) were expertly prepared and icy cold. The house salad consisted of immaculately fresh baby spinach, red leaf lettuce and a julienne of peeled cucumbers and carrots. They were dressed in a light vinaigrette that imparted a slightly sweet flavor possibly by the inclusion of some honey. Our server brought over the pepper mill, and a few grinds, plus a little salt, Coffee/Café/Sweets Caffe Chicco: 2532 S. Broad St., 215-334-3100, $

enhanced the taste of the dressing. Mussels ($8) steamed in beer with bacon and garlic was a fine way to begin dinner. These mollusks were a bit scrawny but nicely cooked. The sauce had a vibrant flavor, but the bacon made it a little salty. A slice of toasted French bread came with the appetizer. Sometimes Edward likes to begin dinner with a vegetable side dish, especially in Italian restaurants. The Strip Joint lists a number of options, including roasted Brussels sprouts ($6). I think these little cabbages have jumped the culinary shark, but if they are properly prepared, they are so good. An order large enough for two arrived in a deep soup bowl. They retained a bit of bite but could have been hotter. I was surprised to see that The Strip Joint does not offer prime rib or a rib steak. I do not care for a New York strip, which is on the menu, so selected the petite filet mignon ($19). I like my beef rare with a good crusty sear on the outside. This is the pleasure people feel when they eat a good piece of beef. Filet is a lean tender cut that requires a good amount of seasoning. For $19, I do not expect prime quality beef, but the steak was seared, tender and rare inside. A small gravy boat of Béarnaise, which is traditional with beef, was made in-house. Unfortunately, my french fries were too salty and could have been hotter. Edward’s rib cut pork chop ($16) spent the right amount of time on the grill. Overcooking pork is a crime. Grilling pork on the bone adds a juicy flavor. This cut is a favorite in our house, and it did not disappoint. His fries were hot and not as salty as mine.

Carnivores can rejoice with a trip to The Strip Joint, as the South of South location makes prime cuts its primary mission. S ta f f P h o t o b y K at h r y n P o o l e

Whoever invented creamed spinach should be hailed a culinary hero. It is a steakhouse staple. The Strip Joint’s version ($6) was heated and served in a gratin dish, was piping hot, well-seasoned and, goodness yes, hipsters, it included shredded kale. All wines by the bottle are $30, with all wines by the glass being $9. The bartender recommended a Malbec for Edward and a Shiraz for me. Both were good choices. Our meal was properly paced, so we did not feel rushed at any time. I guess I should comment on the name of this restaurant. I am not sure The Strip Joint emits good vibrations for families who live in the neighborhood; however, a mom and dad and their two small daugh-

The last laugh Legendary comedian and South Philly native David Brenner succumbed to cancer Saturday. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

any locations can boast about having hosted David Brenner, but South Philly can brag about being the spot where the funny gure formed his rst jokes. After a courageous bout with an undisclosed type of cancer, the native of the 1400 block of South Fourth Street died Saturday in New York City at age 78. “I might be in the twilight hours, but I believe I’m as good and in some ways better than I’ve ever been,” the Dickinson Square West product said to me Dec. 19 as he prepared for overseeing the end-of-the-year Valley Forge Casino Resort-situated Comedy Stars of Tomorrow gathering. “I

get a thrill out of being up there because laughter is a really fantastic medicine.” Mr. Brenner, who lived in South Philly for seven years, captivated audiences 158 times through appearances on “The Tonight Show,” for which he also made dozens of guest host stops for Johnny Carson, whom he lauded, along with his vaudeville-loving patriarch, as a chief influence on his chucklechasing efforts. A Temple University graduate, he honored his country through a two-year Army turn, claimed an Emmy Award for his documentary endeavors, penned five books and charmed laugh lovers with four HBO specials. No matter the amount of renown or money he earned, he counted perspective as his great-

est endowment. “I love what I do,” he confessed last year. “However, the day I would like to see is where there are no stand-up comedians because people are enjoying their lives so much and are finding laughter with their own friends and family.” For his kith and kin, including wife Ruth Marzulli, sons Cole, Wyatt and Slade and grandson Wesley, Mr. Brenner left the request that they insert $100 in small bills in his left sock “just in case tipping is recommended where I’m going,” according to friend and publicist Jeff Abra-

ham. At the conclusion of o our interview, Mr. Brenner, noting we had spoken for almost an hour, said he usually did not engage in such lengthy discourse and attributed the duration to my skills as a journalist. As if he had not already been my favorite co-

God is With Us It’s really only natural to say a little prayer. To ask the Lord to bless us and keep us in His care. God’s love will assuage all pain, for after earth comes heaven, and out of our loss our gain.

★SANDEFUR★

We think about you everyday. The memories, the laughter and the things you would say. Memories don't fade, they just grow deep for someone we love but could not keep. We speak your name with love and pride. We smile through tears we try to hide. They say that time heals everything, but we know that isn't so. It hurts as much today as it did 3 years ago. Though you are absent, you are always near, still loved, still missed, still very dear and we miss you more and more with each passing day. Forever in our hearts; Love & Miss You, Mom & Dad

Saving grace A Girard Estate inhabitant has begun sharing his gusto for goaltending with local children. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

A

HIS ADMIRATION FOR the fast-paced pastime quickly compelled Dundovich to envision it as his vocation. With copious knowledge of the history of goaltending, including the feats of Flyers greats Bernie Parent and Pelle Lindbergh, and receptivity to being a focal point in games’ outcomes, he advanced enough to merit a roster spot with the Little Flyers and delighted in how seriously the sport came to influence his decisions and demeanor. “I had a great sense of commitment early on and really wanted to get better each time out,” Dundovich said. “By 11, I had the desire to be a professional even if I wasn’t sure how any plan would w o r k out.” Playing against stacked clubs as a secondary education pupil, hee helped Romann Catholic Highh School to winn fore two titles before entering into the insightful world of junior hockey. That four-year opportunity offered numerous occasions to weigh his talents against other stars’ gifts and included chances to appreciate a wider range of experiences, with the humorous viewing of a moose in his Montana yard among the most memorable. Having devoted so much to his sporting identity, Dundovich enriched his scholastic existence by majoring in business then kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts Boston and Framingham State College, respectively.

Peter Dundovich has proven a winner at each stop along his hockey journey and is encouraging area youths to be as enthused about giving their best efforts. photos by Rob torney and Peter Dundovich

Upon vacationing in his father’s native land of Croatia as a collegiate, he landed an unexpected job with a culturally diverse club, growing as a student of the world and of his obsession. “The opportunity fell in my lap,” Dundovich said of his European stay. “The style of play was so good, and I contend that getting the exposure intensified my appreciation for what I was trying to do.” Federal Hockey League gigs with the

at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php New York Aviators and the Thousand Islands, now Watertown, Privateers, brought him renown in the United States, with an eventual call up to the Trenton Titans placing him in the Flyers system. He eventually actualized his boyhood dream somewhat by becoming a practice goalie for the Orange and Black, with the last two summers yielding what he has termed “a blast” and “the time of my life.” “The guys have been awesome,” Dundovich said. “The experience has been equally incredible because it’s helped me to see myself in a different light and uncover parts of me that I hadn’t known I could tap into.” As instances of right timing have helped him to flash his form to make big saves, he holds out hope that he can one day join his hockey heroes on the Wells Fargo Center ice. If he falls short, he will have no regrets and plenty of gratitude. “What I’ve done could be as good as it gets for me,” Dundovich said, “and if that’s the case, I can sleep peacefully.” Noting that ex e perts and fa are devotfans in more ating tention te to the rigors ri and rewa wards of goaltending, ten he is enjoying enj being able abl to encourage children with as much gumption as he gum had when first putting on pads; therefore, therefore bbeing a mentor has also involved staying a student. “There’s plenty to learn, especially as the game evolves,” Dundovich said. “It’s mandatory to stay positive because with hockey, you can’t take anything for granted.” SPR For more information, contact pdundo31@yahoo.com. s a nimble netminder, Peter Dundovich has thwarted thousands of shots over the last two decades, nding favor with numerous clubs, including his beloved Philadelphia Flyers. Believing the art of stopping rubber to be the marriage of a exible frame and a malleable mind, the 29-year-old has commenced coaching young goaltenders, with Rizzo Rink, 1101 S. Front St., his local location for bestowing education. “I love working with kids,” the resident of the 2500 block of South Colorado Street said Monday at the Pennsport spot, where he has overseen a pair of camps, including one two weeks ago. “I’ve encountered some very capable players, more, in fact, than I’d expected.” In situating the Dundo Goalie School lessons at Rizzo Rink, the Girard Estate dweller has returned to the instigative influence behind his career, as hockey soon iced baseball and soccer for his attention when he debuted there as a first-grader at St. Monica School, 1720 Ritner St. Leaving behind forward duties for heavily scrutinized goalie chores three years into his odyssey, Dundovich absorbed the pressure quickly and has advocated for similar diligence among his charges. “I felt I had some sort of natural ability,” he said of his initial stint as a stopper. “As I grew up and especially through traveling and playing for solid teams, I realized a great part of the preparation is mental. That’s been big in conveying to the kids.” Drawing registrants from South and Northeast Philly, his sessions have addressed the physical and cerebral elements of occupying the space between the pipes and have found him granting what he lacked as a boy, formal training. As goalies usually garner the glory for victories and frequently reap regret for defeats, Dundovich is stressing youths’ need to acquire perspective, with one’s mindset as important as a skillset. “Experience rules over all,” the athlete, who will serve as the head instructor for upcoming Rick Heinz Goalie Camp tutorials in California and New Jersey, said. “There’s always going to be some heavy thinking involved as a goalie, but I’ve learned to block all the doubt out and

just play. That’s what has been the most helpful to me in adding coaching to my ways of showing my love for hockey.”

prayer to the blessed virgin

(never known to fail). O Most Beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful Vine Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here You are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor my necessity (Make Request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. Then you must publish it and it will be granted to you.
