t’s cleanup season. And last Saturday’s unseasonably warm conditions made for an ideal day for communities across South Philadelphia to take to their sidewalks, parks and alleyways to begin the long and arduous process of cleaning up after the thaw. As neighbors emerge from the hibernation season with coordinated cleanups, they also build

bridges and improve their neighborhoods by strengthening block dynamics in ways beyond picking up trash. The first event of the spring season for PhillyRising in the “Southeast” neighborhood (the other in South Philly is called Point Breeze) took place along the edge of Dickinson Square Park, Fourth and Tasker streets. “PhillyRising targets neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia that are plagued by chronic crime and quality of life concerns, and establishes partnerships with community members to

Spring is here. And although I haven’t yet seen “a crocus or a rosebud or a robin on the wing,” one of the unmistakable signs of spring in our area is the possibility of a transit strike.

Addressing the agenda To the Editor: It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to rejoice, albeit cautiously, over legislation affecting women in Pennsylvania. A package of bills, known as the Pennsylvania Agenda for Women’s Health, aims to protect women in several key ways. The agenda includes better legal protection for women in the workplace and improved housing security for victims of domestic violence, and it expands a woman’s ability to clearly pinpoint wage disparities, thereby insuring more equal pay in the workplace. As a young woman, and a semirecent college graduate, I am infuriated by the barrage of legislation over the past several years, which blatantly chips away at women’s rights. For instance, last year Gov. Tom Corbett signed House Bill 818, which prohibits abortion coverage under the Pennsylvania health exchanges. Further, I am saddened to dis-

cover that a woman in Pennsylvania can still be fired for resting on a stool during pregnancy or that a woman in Pennsylvania is paid 76 cents for each dollar paid to a man. A great deal needs to be addressed surrounding women’s health, but I am pleased to hear that a step is being taken in the right direction. More policies such as the Pennsylvania Agenda for Women’s Health need to be introduced and enacted — policies that support women and families, and that expand and uphold women’s rights, rather than inhibiting them. Slade Roff South Philadelphia

I implore those who feel the same way to listen to the first report, and then turn to a non-news-reporting station. They do not impress me. Joe Cirella South Philadelphia

Energetic support To the Editor: As a student of history, I often have severe disagreements with the ordinances and policies of the Philadelphia City Council. I am well aware that virtually all governments throughout history have been inefficient, wasteful and corrupt. The Philly government is certainly no exception. However, soon they will be considering the sale of PGW to a private energy company, and I whole hardily endorse this sale. The efficiency level of PGW compared to private utility companies is well below par, and I predict that if this

South PhillyReview sale is consummated, our gas bills will go down because the number of administrators will be greatly reduced. I am hoping the council will finally take some action that I will agree with. Thomas James South Philadelphia Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

Suspected slasher captured Authorities arrested a Dickinson Square West man after he supposedly stabbed one of their own. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

A

t 4:39 p.m. Friday, police converged on the 1100 block of Pine Street to take William Johnson into custody. They had identified the 38-year-old resident of the 400 block of Morris Street as the suspect in a stabbing the previous night and located him sleeping in the bushes. According to the Public Affairs Unit, an off-duty police officer and a friend were walking in Center City William at 11:34 p.m. March 20 Johnson when Johnson reportedly approached them to ask for money and cigarettes. The law enforcement agent responded by identifying himself as a cop and implored him to leave them alone. Johnson allegedly responded with profanity and instigated a fight with the first complainant, who suffered four stab wounds. The other individual, who intervened in the matter, received a gash to his chin. He noticed the first complainant in pain and inspected his injuries in a nearby establishment. Upon his arrest, Johnson, also known as William Wheaton, complained of rib pain and received transport to Hahnemann University Hospital. Authorities will process and charge him after his release.

Suspicious situation Shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to the report of a home shooting on the 2000 block of Reserve Drive. Once inside, they ventured to a bedroom and found a 50-year-old woman with one gunshot wound, Officer Tanya Little of Police Public Affairs said. About a half-hour later, emergency medical workers pronounced her dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the name of the female, nor have they ruled on whether the matter is a suicide or a homicide. Police recovered multiple shell casings from an automatic weapon in the residence. To report information, call Public Affairs at 215-6863334, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Not loving it Police arrested a North Philly resident for his alleged aggressive behavior at a Grays Ferry McDonald’s Sunday. The complainant told authorities he was at the eatery, 2851 Grays Ferry Ave., at 3:45 p.m. when an unknown man approached him, used his elbow to deliver a blow to his head and tried to run away after snatching his Toshiba laptop, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The owner ran toward the man, who allegedly pushed him into a table. The site manager detained the alleged perpetrator and retrieved the device, but the man left the establishment before police arrived, Tolliver said. Once there, authorities met with the proprietor and the complainant, who sustained bruising to his left shoulder for which he did not seek medical treatment, gathering a description of the supposed suspect that they used to arrest 33-year-old Shaun Smith on the 3200 block of Wharton Street. They charged him with simple assault, two counts of theft, robbery and recklessly endangering another person.

Zabel case update The District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that a grand jury has indicted Marcellus Jones on charges of murder, conspiracy, robbery, firearms violations, possession of an instrument of crime, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property for the June 15, 2008 killing of Passyunk Square resident Beau Zabel. The victim had recently moved to the area to be a teaching fellow within the School District of Philadelphia.

Doctor’s charges dropped Four months after his arrest in a Grays Ferry home, orthopedic surgeon Andrew Collier Jr. had charges against him dropped, according to a Tuesday release by the District Attorney’s Office. Officers had conducted a Nov. 26 raid of a home near 30th and Mifflin streets and supposedly encountered the medical professional writing prescriptions. Spokeswoman Tasha Jamerson revealed

Home invaders sought Police are looking to bring two home invaders to justice for an incident in Point Breeze. The complainant informed authorities that at 9:30 p.m. March 16, he let a female family member pick up clothing from his residence on the 2000 block of Tasker Street. After he briefly exited the home to lock the exterior door, he observed in his bedroom two men armed with knives, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The duo walked toward him and demanded money, with the homeowner throwing a $20 on the table. He grabbed a piece of wood for defense, but the offenders grabbed him and punched his head and body. Ordering him to be quiet, they said failure to do so would lead them to hurt his sleeping 4-year-old son, Tolliver said. The first aggressor stayed with the victim in the front part of the abode while the

second went to the back, with both fleeing through a rear door. The complainant went to check on his descendant and noticed the second intruder had stolen $300 and his wallet from a cabinet above the bedroom closet. The resident, who sustained a cut to his head but did not seek medical treatment, described the first as black, 19 or 20 years old, 5-foot-2, 130 pounds; having a dark complexion; armed with a 6-inch knife; and wearing a dark hoodie, dark-colored pants and a black mask. He tabbed the second as black, 20 years old, 5-foot-2, 140 pounds; having a dark complexion and buggy eyes; armed with a 6-inch knife; and wearing the same sort of hoodie, pants and mask as his co-conspirator. Raw aggression A Center City sushi deliveryman became a robbery victim in Bella Vista Friday. At 11:40 p.m., the worker from I Sushi was trying to make a stop on the 800 block of Bainbridge Street when two unknown males approached the individual, grabbed him by his shirt, forced him from his bicycle, pulled him to the ground and demanded cash, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The complainant was compliant and gave them his wallet, which contained $280. The perpetrators took the money from the holder, threw the wallet and fled on food, with the victim last catching them heading southbound on Ninth Street. A detailed description of the suspects was not available at press time. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms. SPR

Police are seeking two males for their attempted robbery of an 11-year-old in Pennsport. At 5:15 p.m. March 2, the minor and a friend were walking home from a gym when they noticed two unknown figures following them, authorities said. The two began to run, but the strangers caught up with them on the 2000 block of South Philip Street, with one pointing a handgun at the boy and demanding money. The duo fled on foot in an unknown direction when learning the complainant had no cash. The would-be robbery victim and his contemporary described the first individual as black, 5-foot-2, 13 years old; having a medium build; and wearing a blue hoodie with a Philadelphia 76ers logo. They tabbed the second as black, 5-foot-9, 17 years old; and wearing a darkcolored jacket. Long live the arts In its third decade of doling out grant money, the Cultural Fund is sustaining the arts. ■ By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

T

he Philadelphia Cultural Fund has seen its ups and downs, like many institutions in this city that are at least two decades old. It’s been known by different names and distributed a vast variety of amounts since 1991, but the 2014 grants to 272 arts and culture organizations were kind to South Philadelphia. A total of $1.63 million, which was given to approximately 90 percent of the applying organizations, will help keep entities from small to huge in action by contributing to their operating budgets. To name a few: DaVinci Art Alliance, 704 Catharine St., Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., Theatre Exile, 1340 S. 13th St., Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers, 1316 S. Ninth St., Settlement Music School, 416 Queen St., Tempesta di Mare, 1034 Carpenter St., Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St., Luna Theater Company, 620 S. Eighth St., and slew of other companies that employ South Philadelphians, In an era where arts funding is threatened by tight municipal budgets and dwindling resources, for some organizations, this money is highly welcome and needed. “It’s always a tremendous shot in the arm, and it enables us to keep all of our programs alive,” Jen Childs, the artistic director of 1812 Productions, 2329 S. Third St., said. The comedy-based theater company has been working with South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., for 16 years now and grants from the Cultural Fund allow them to continue their efforts. “Comedy is a great learning and teaching tool, and we work with teachers to achieve active learning, getting students out from behind their desks and learning about things on their feet,” the Passyunk Square resident detailed. Grant money “enables us to continue that kind of work and we owe a big thanks to [First District] Councilman [Mark] Squilla.” At a ceremony at City Hall March 10, Squilla handed out checks and shook hands. “The Cultural Fund has allowed for continued growth of the Arts in my district,” the Front-Street-and-Snyder-Avenue dweller said. “It has helped to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods surrounding these organizations.” What are the criteria for receiving this grant money? “We don’t evaluate artistic merit,” Cultural Fund’s Executive Assistant Michelle

Allen Radway, the producing artistic director of Simpatico Theatre Project, holds up one of the many signs from the Culture Fund’s hashtag effort, #whatphillyartsdo. Photo By Kevin Monko

of the Fund, helped create it under the direction of former Philadelphia Mayor and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and onetime City Council President and mayor John Street. “It’s not a program of the mayor, and it’s not a program of council, but a program for all citizens,” she explained. She attributes Rendell’s wholesale belief and investment in Broad Street as an arts corridor with the city’s revitalized arts and culture community. “That was so critical that Rendell bought into the idea that focusing on the arts and culture to revitalize the city. He took the whole Avenue of the Arts thing really seriously,” she detailed. The fund saw its highest distribution in 2010 with a pool of $3.2 million and a low in 1994 of $440,000. Thankfully, the City has put a premium of sorts on protecting and nourishing its cultural institutions, perhaps because of the aforementioned economic incentives. “The money’s gone up and down, and it all depends on how much money Council CATHY COATE, A resident of the 1400 block approves,” Coate explained. “It all has to of South Broad Street and long-time friend do with what else is going on. Some people

Currica assured. “What we evaluate is if an organization has community impact – that’s the largest weighted criteria.” The great thing is organizations can use the grant money however they see fit. “The grants that we give can be used for anything: marketing, salaries, to keep the lights on, for scholarships,” Currica added. With pride, she reported a few surprising facts: $3.3 billion of the city’s economy comes from cultural organizations and “44,000 jobs are created through the arts in Philadelphia.” Fiscal responsibility is necessary to receive grants, however; record-keeping and budget maintenance are evaluated in the process, as well. “We look at their mission and their programming and that there is a response from the community,” Currica elaborated. “Every organization organizes in its own way. We understand that. They may have a small staff and an extremely small budget, but we want to make sure they’re making smart fiscal choices.”

find it hard to justify supporting the arts and culture in a big way when there are potholes to repair and other needs. It was really a dire situation in the late ’80s and early ’90s when the city was on the verge of bankruptcy, but a couple of years later and we were able to bring it back to life.” Even a cultural behemoth like The Rock School for Dance Education, 1101 S. Broad St., has room in its budget for city support. Eighty-eight percent of its budget comes from tuition, performances and a massive summer program, but 12 percent gets picked up in other ways. “It’s not a huge amount, but it’s not insignificant for us,” school director Bo Spassoff said. “We used to receive support from the Federal Educational Outreach Program, and that’s pretty much disappeared. So we’ve had to come up with an alternative. There’s still stuff like guest faculty, scholarships for students, computers, you name it: there’s always places where we could use the additional support.” Currica detailed a change this year in the application process. Applications and budgets used to get reviewed by like-minded companies: dance looked at dance, art looked at art, and so on. But this year they split it up along budget size, and she thinks it worked out for the better. “An organization cannot receive more than 30 percent of their budget. It’s best if an organization doesn’t receive more than 30 percent — what if the grant isn’t there the next year or if they forget to apply,” she explained. Peer review based on budget size also forged a greater understanding within the community of what like-minded companies are up against and how they work. “It fosters a greater cross-pollination and understanding of different cultural institutions outside of your own specialty,” Currica said. There is a clear passion for the process and the end product — the way the arts effect Philadelphians’ lives. “For me, access to arts and arts education is a human right,” Currica said. “It’s an alternative form of education and expression that remixes the humanities in a way that makes learning less intimidating and more digestible for those who have had negative experiences with popular or traditional education. The arts also allow deeper individual expression and reception for those who socially or emotionally may be incapable of what we consider normal interaction.” SPR

PHILLY RISING continued from page 1 goals for improvement. Amanda Finch is the Southeast neighborhood coordinator, and she was on hand to connect denizens with resources on Saturday. “We ask the residents what they want to see happening and work to their needs and wants as opposed to coming in with an already-set agenda,” she explained. “We’re basically doing grassroots community development but with the support of the City because we have connections within all the departments.” So she and her team are able to have heaps of trash piled high and Streets Department can be notified for immediate removal. A few industrious women attacked a trash-filled and neglected backyard that yielded 40 bags of refuse. Finch reported that the day yielded a weigh-in of 2.61 tons of debris collected and removed. “We believe that if there’s a clean block, then it has a reflection of the crime activity,” Carmetta Dickerson, the neighborhood Town Watch representative, noted. “If it’s a clean bock, people are participating and watching out for each other. If it’s a dirty block prone to criminal activity, you end up having places where people hide drugs and they realize people aren’t paying attention.” Seems pretty simple: clean blocks establish pride and collective concern for their upkeep and maintenance. But the cleanup effort goes beyond the cosmetic. “We also identify potential houses that may have activities of an illegal nature,” Dickerson continued, elaborating on the social ripples of a coordinated block cleanup. “People don’t know their neighbors to their right, to their left, behind them and in front of them and people are saying ‘Oh, hey you live on this block?’” SATURDAY’S EFFORTS CAME from a truly collaborative effort, as Finch explained. She was a little frustrated after making a concerned effort to get a broader perspective of the neighborhood she serves.

“I kept seeing the same people over and over again,” she admitted, witnessing regular attendance at meetings by only the most eager residents. But how would she get a wider audience involved? “I work very closely with the police, with Epic Stakeholders, and Town Watch,” she said. “I figured it would be a good idea for the four of us to get together because we all have the same goal, which is to reach out to people to hear their needs and wants and make that happen in the community. So we created a coalition.” They handed out 150 recycling bins with the help of Community Life Improvement Programs (CLIP), which consists of “several programs and agencies dedicated to improving the appearance of neighborhoods throughout the City of Philadelphia

through the eradication of blight,” according to the City’s website. CLIP helps get tools in the hands of residents who wish to make a change, takes to task menacing vacant lots, removes undesirable graffiti and provides an outlet for non-violent offenders fulfilling due hours of service. In addition to cleanups lead by PhillyRising and Finch, Officer Dickerson was also looking for block captains. Captains, as the latter female explained, are keen observers: “Someone who really does not mind putting themselves out there” and who will “organize to make sure that block’s a safe block.” They “sign up to be eyes and ears [and we] train them to document information.” An effective captain may even know how to communicate unrest that goes from

home to school and back. “If it happens in the neighborhood, they bring it into the school, or if it happens in the school they bring it into the community, and we need everyone to come together to provide a positive outcome,” Dickerson divulged. In general, what was obvious on Saturday and more obvious after talking to interested parties, is that good neighbors are willing and, in some cases, eager to spend their own unpaid off time improving their block and neighborhood. Ted Savage, the president of the Dickinson Square West Civic Association, shared positive memories of last summer’s block parties with nearby residents Amanda Ashley, a resident of the 400 block of Greenwich Street, and Bill Arrowood, of the 300 block of Federal Street, while Arrowood dug and shoveled odd bricks and large stones from a vacant lot. “I don’t care who owns this,” Savage said simply, making a pile of waste for the Streets Department to pick up. Arrowood struck on a note that could be applied to the nearby Dickinson Square Park. “No good city park is maintained by the City,” he said. This notion speaks to the finger-pointing that often results in piled-up garbage and unresolved street trash — if strangers won’t pick up the garbage of other strangers, it will stay there. But as Finch notes, PhillyRising is able to show residents that the City does care about neighborhood improvement. Pointing towards the renewed coalition effort that she and her community allies plan on executing, it looks like just the beginning for the stretch of Tasker to Snyder Avenue between Fourth and Sixth Streets: “It’s inspiring to the neighbors that they get that support from the city. This was our first revamped effort at a resource-sharing block-cleaning program. We’re planning on doing it month to month moving down to Snyder.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. A shooting star A Newbold actor is reaching new heights in portraying a would-be assassin. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

egarding performing as “the best rush in the world,” Sam Sherburne usually acquires his kicks through heavily comedic turns. For his New City Stage Co. role as John Hinckley Jr., who attempted to gun down President Ronald Reagan March 30, 1981, the resident of the 1500 block of Federal Street is displaying his diversity and is experiencing a shot of novelty, too. “It’s a compelling task to be a star or a lead,” the 28-year-old said of looking to engender empathy for the would-be killer. “It’s a fun challenge, especially because I need to be interesting the whole time and have the audience track me.” Owing to his mother’s psychology background, the Newbold inhabitant noted the show, running through Sunday at the Adrienne Theatre, offers hints of a world somewhat familiar to him through its addressing mental illness and the quest for distinction. Whereas Hinckley sought renown for ridding the country of its leader, Sherburne is craving consideration as a persevering performer bent on building resolve. “I look back at my progression, and it always comes down to how much I want to apply myself and give of myself,” he said. “A consistent chore is determining how to organize the rest of my life so I can work more and work better.”

LIFESTYLES Sherburne has garnered a great guide in his journey through New City Stage, for whom he is making his fourth appearance. The company’s education director and “Voices for a New City” ensemble coordinator, he readily responded to a request from founding artistic director Ginger Dayle and producing artistic director Russ Widdall to tackle Hinckley, whose obsession with actress Jodie Foster based on her ’76 role in “Taxi Driver” inspired his aggression. Eager for the role’s required range of emotions, he has taken the work, which the overseers are staging as a workshop production, and made it a fullyfledged investigation of fragility, individuality and insanity. “I’m totally trying to do so,” Sherburne said in response to a review’s claim he is not coveting an audience’s compassion. “I understand he’s a polarizing figure, and it’s my job to help viewers to understand our mission across the board, which is not to lionize or demonize but educate.” Despite the often intense nature of examining Hinckley, who even professed after his ’82 trial, through which a jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity, that his action represented “the greatest love offering in the history of the world,” he confessed a sense of ease has permeated his endeavor, attributing it to his search for

authenticity and specificity. Adhering to his attraction to gripping storytelling, the piece, which deftly deals with processing fame and infamy, also appeals to his desire to situate himself further among the ever-growing collection of young, idealistic actors and actresses who have come to populate South Philly. “There’s a ton of energy in certain corners here,” Sherburne said. “With a play like ‘Hinckley,’ I’m happy to contribute to the vibe.” THE GRATEFUL ACTOR came to the performer-heavy expanse courtesy of numerous locations, including his native Kentucky. With theater in his genes, he debuted as a 10-year-old alongside his father in the Wabash College-situated production of Eugene O’Neill’s “Ah, Wilderness.” “I viewed acting as definitely a legitimate thing to try,” Sherburne said. “It’s not necessarily something that someone is going to become rich from doing, but I still think I can be a standout and add my values to the craft.” Letting the acting bug infect his being, Sherburne, who had believed sports journalism would win him regard, strengthened his comprehension of dedication at 15 through the Pennsylvania Governor’s School of the Arts. Always loyal to elic-

iting laughter, the immense fan of such hysterics helpers as “Saturday Night Live” and “The Simpsons” furthered his focus on funny deliveries by matriculating at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where for a time he fancied himself more of a writer and director than a performer. “I was a big fish in a small pond with regards to how much I wanted to do, meaning I had great opportunities to experiment,” Sherburne, who maintained his momentum through graduate work at Florida Atlantic University, said. “It became a matter of perseverance.” Time in the Sunshine State bore roles such as the Nurse in “Romeo and Juliet” and Trinculo in “The Tempest,” but he felt he could not start a solid life there and moved to Philadelphia in September 2011. What initially felt scary has become fruitful, as Sherburne, who began his City of Brotherly Love existence in Manayunk before venturing to Sixth and Reed streets and his current spot, has assisted the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre’s “Cymbeline” and “The Two Noble Kinsmen” and New City Stage’s “Voices for a New City,” “American Sligo” and “Frost/Nixon.” “It’s been amazing to grow with such peers pushing me along,” the presence said of Dayle, Widdall and Barrymore Award winner and fellow Newbold dwell-

er Aaron Cromie. “I’m always looking to see how I can get better and be the best version of myself.” Sherburne, who has also pleased patrons with ’07’s “Last Afternoon,” which he wrote and directed, and last year’s “Completeness” for the FringeArts Festival, is continuing to mold his mentality by serving as an understudy for the Arden Theatre Co.’s “Three Sisters,” which features seven South Philly denizens, and generating buzz for High Dramma, his friend-assisted sketch comedy troupe. Eager for his upcoming trek to Delaware for the Rehobeth Summer Children’s Theatre, the actor, who professed that being at the center of attention is “not my track” could be on track to be as consistent of a hire as many of the local performers he has come to admire. “When I had that moment in college where I wasn’t sure about being an actor, I definitely knew I wanted a life in theater regardless,” Sherburne said. “Everyone who’s still doing this at 22, 23 or beyond has talent, so I’m fortunate to take that childhood interest in storytelling and try to make it flourish.” SPR For tickets, visit newcitystage.org.

Avoid a SEPTA strike

S

vague terms reserved for figuring out what the hell is eating at the relationship between Ryne Sandberg and Jimmy Rollins. The TWU’s Brown was president the last time transit workers went on strike. At that time, he indicated that he didn’t mind being the most “hated” man in town. I guess that means we can’t appeal to his approval rating. I’m not sure how SEPTA’s Deiger feels about a potential loss in popularity, but I’m guessing she isn’t losing any sleep over it either. The thing is, Brown and Deiger aside, both parties know a SEPTA strike never really benefits either party, and certainly not the riders. It’s probably the biggest reason we haven’t experienced a SEPTA stoppage since 2009. Much of SEPTA’s ridership depends on public transit to get to work. According to the Pew Trust website, of the nation’s 25 largest cities, only five have a higher percentage of people using public transit to go to work. The same website also indicates SEPTA’s ridership has gone up 13 percent in the last 10 years. The burden of a strike hits working stiffs and seniors the hardest, the folks who have no alternative to SEPTA. The riders who have an alternative sometimes don’t return to SEPTA when the strike is over. The Phillies home opener is scheduled right after the strike deadline. Many fans have used SEPTA to get to and from the games, alleviating traffic jams in the area around the stadium, where much of our readership lives. SEPTA recently got a funding boost and has plans to update its facilities in need of repair and modernization. There has been recent talk about possibly extending subway hours. All that good stuff can quickly go down the toilet with a strike. Why, with all the positive things happening, is there even the potential for a strike? All of us know that in certain industries, there is a culture that persists that is even stronger than the issues that leads to strikes. It used to be that way between SEPTA and the TWU. Both sides would posture and point fingers. The representatives for the warring factions seemed to enjoy their moment on the local news. Egos got in the way while workers and riders suffered. For the last five years of labor peace, the image of both the company and the union has improved significantly. The transit system today is not without its problems, but it has made vast strides. By most yardsticks, SEPTA and its workers should be praised for the way they handled the past brutal winter with minimal discomfort to its riders. If either party casts that progress aside, maybe both of them have slipped and bumped their heads. At the least, maybe both sides should have their heads examined. Passion proves pivotal for Secretary (Felicity Gilbert), Jerôme Morris (Shia LaBeouf) and Young Joe (Stacy Martin) in Lars von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac: Volume 1.”

Shock value ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

I

was just discussing the overall misanthropy of Lars von Trier’s work with a colleague, who can’t quite stomach the Danish director’s apparent disdain for humanity. I really can’t argue with my colleague’s points, for if there’s any filmmaker bent on bitterly exposing us to our collective ills and inner demons, it’s von Trier. The difference is, some of us are more willing to explore those ills and demons than others, and von Trier is preternaturally gifted in thrusting them in our faces — harshly and viscerally, yet beautifully, too. I thought of my colleague when watching “Nymphomaniac: Volume I,” the first half of von Trier’s epic two-part saga about Joe, the self-hating title character with a monumental carnal history. This opening chapter marks von Trier’s least misanthropic work to date. If anything, “Volume I,” for all its unbridled shock value (prepare for a lot of on-screen flesh), is a comedy most of all. Played in adulthood by Charlotte Gainsbourg, Joe, bruised and battered, is rescued from an alleyway by Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), a timid, asexual hermit who listens to Joe’s manifesto, and offers onthe-nose scientific theorizations that border on farce. Joe’s recollection of a tryst-filled train ride gets likened to fly-fishing, while the numerical nature of her first time (don’t ask) gets linked to the Fibonacci sequence. Von Trier is deliberately making light of the events to draw us in to Joe and Seligman’s platonic bond. And yet, if you know anything about the director, you’ve already deduced that this is bait in the trap. In youth, Joe is portrayed by newcomer Stacy Martin, and her insatiable lust — it

goes beyond desire, and certainly, pleasure — apparently shatters countless lives, including that of a wife and mother eerily embodied by Uma Thurman in one standout scene. Young Joe also begins a lifelong sexual connection to Jerôme (Shia LaBeouf), a man she encounters serendipitously—or fictionally, if you don’t believe grown Joe’s tale—throughout her life. For my colleague, Volume 1 is probably a welcome respite. For me, an appreciator of von Trier’s aptitude for grand, emotional devastation, it feels like foreplay.

This year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, “The Great Beauty” is director Paolo Sorrentino’s florid masterpiece — an incredibly intoxicating valentine to Italy, and a clear, yet inspired, nod to the films of Federico Fellini. Toni Servillo is extraordinary as an aging journalist, a chic bundle of weathered, marvelous contradictions. There are some movies that wash over you with such persistent formal transcendence that you can barely fathom they were made at all. This is one of them. pring is here. And although I haven’t yet seen “a crocus or a rosebud or a robin on the wing,” one of the unmistakable signs of spring in our area is the possibility of a transit strike. Don’t get me wrong. I realize because we haven’t had a transit strike since 2009, this is what passes as the golden era of SEPTA and the Transport Workers Union (TWU). That one wasn’t even a real strike since it lasted only six days. Compare that to 1983 when the City went 108 days without public transportation (also known as the golden era for taxi cabs around here). So let’s just say I’m hopeful this time around. Of course, hope is something that evaporates around here more quickly than an investigation into political bribery. For instance, in an article dated around this time last year, the TWU asked SEPTA to start early negotiations on a new contract. SEPTA appeared to agree. Somehow we’ve gone from there to here with the City’s bus, trolley and subway drivers working without a contract since March 14th, and a possible shutdown of the three SEPTA regional and local systems looming on April 6th. You have to say it’s not promising when TWU’s President Willie Brown tells SEPTA’s Chief Labor Relations Officer, Stephanie Deiger, in response to a SEPTA settlement offer, that she “must’ve slipped and bumped her head.” I confess that I have a dog in this hunt, rurally speaking. As a senior, I ride city buses free. Most of the bus drivers know me as the old guy making yet another food run. Except for an occasional empty bottle of Snapple rattling around the aisle, I’m a SEPTA fan. I carry a bus schedule with me like other folks carry their driver’s license. My driver’s license is used for identification only; otherwise it is about as useless as mammaries on a bull (and I cleaned that up). My lifestyle needs a bus showing up every 20 minutes. The issues, as I understand them, involve — surprise, surprise — money. SEPTA supposedly budgets for a 3-percent wage increase for its workers. SEPTA drivers starting wages are reportedly $33,887 a year, going up to $55,620 after four years. A driver can earn up to $64,847 with overtime. There also are reportedly some health-care costs that have to be settled with the Affordable Care Act now in place. The issues separating the two parties have been discussed publicly only in the kind of

Brunch for thought East Passyunk Avenue stalwart Stateside’s (1536 E. Passyunk Ave.) brunch menu has been up and running for about eight weeks now and is off to a good start, according to chef Kevin D’Egidio. Designed in a similar manner to its dinner menu, it is set up to feature five larger dishes, four small plates and three sides in a seasonally rotating menu that is set to change every two to two-and-a-half months. This season’s rendition of the menu seems to have gone the comfort-classic route. D’Egidio said the eggs Benedict made with lamb bacon and, appropriately for Stateside, a whiskey hollandaise stands out as a popular dish. Chicken and waffles with caramelized leek and the pastrami pork Monte Cristo have been oft ordered as well. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

lavors of the Avenue, East Passyunk Avenue’s signature culinary event, is set for noon to 4 p.m. April 26th under a big top tent between Morris and Dickinson streets. Twentyyseven restaurants will take part, offering up samples of the Avenue’s standout dishes and drinks, including the debut of Laurel BYOB — perhaps providing the best chance to experience chef Nicholas Elmi’s modern French/American fare, as reservations are booked until June. Fond and Will BYOB, each helmed by a James Beard Award semifinalist (Lee Styer for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic and Christopher Kearse for Rising Star Chef of the Year respectively) are both set to return this year. Brigantessa, 1520 E. Passyunk Ave., which on its Twitter account (@Brigantessa_EPA) has been wonderfully chronicling its progress toward a mid-summer opening, will also make its debut. Check it out for a peak at everything from pictures of construction plans to a shot of its handmade pizza oven straight from Naples. Marra’s, Ippolito’s, and Mamma Maria Ristorante also will get in on the action, representing the old school East Passyunk Avenue restaurant scene that truly started it all. Each brings its own brand of classic Italian to the table, be it pastry, pizza or pasta. General admission tickets are $30 while the $50 VIP option includes early entry and some bonus liquor samplings. A free street festival will also take place outside the tent and is open to the public.

Townsend (1623 E. Passyunk Ave.), the namesake restaurant of chef Townsend Wentz, is among spring’s most anticipated openings not just on the avenue, but citywide. Wentz told me he is shooting for the space itself to be opened for the aforementioned Flavors of the Avenue event, which he is already set to participate in. The chef also described the menu concept. “We call it winedriven food and that means we think about what we are going to pair with the food when we make it and we think about how we create our flavors,” he said. “It’s an approach that comes from the many, many tasting menus we’ve put together.” Wentz also expressed an appreciation a for the neighborhood feel f of East Passyunk and h it plays into the atmohow sphere sph he hopes to create. "W "We [the staff] all come from a background that expects excellence, and we aren't going to make things casual for casual's sake,” he explained. “But at the same time this is a neighborhood and we want people to be able to come as they are and enjoy but expect that excellence.”

SOUTH PHILLY SANDWICH REVIEW

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

Breading for battle

N

ame one topic that people constantly debate when talking about Philly. This is not a test, but for the purpose of tonight’s highly anticipated Pennsport-based showdown it’s sandwiches, specifically who makes the best ones, instantly heats up conversation. The South Philly Sandwich Review, presented by the South Philly Review and the Mummers Museum (site of tonight’s $10 sampling frenzy), 1100 S. Second St., and sponsored by Liscio’s Bakery and Conestoga Bank, is expected to be a fun night out for the 18-and-over crowd. Rusty Martz, CEO of the museum, said they are so happy to be hosting the new event. The location also was home to October’s Family Fun Day. “We believe the museum should be a community gathering place, and enjoy seeing and meeting all of our new and old friends every time we have the opportunity to host a community event,” Martz, who also will be serving as one of the evening’s judges, said. He is certainly looking forward to sampling the different offerings that will be

presented to the judges this evening. “I haven’t found a sandwich yet that I haven’t enjoyed tasting, but if pressed for a favorite, I am a traditional cheesesteak kind of guy,” he said. Chad Vilotti, co-owner of South Jerseybased Liscio’s Bakery, said participating in the event is a “must” for his company. “We pride ourselves in making Philly sandwich’s not only delicious, but consistent and world famous,” he said. Patrons and a handful of local guest judges will have a chance to sample a variety of sandwiches during this friendly three-hour tasting session. The event, which is the result of another brainstorming session to help advertisers share their tasty products with readers, is slated for 6 to 9 p.m. T & N Deli and Sandwich Shop; PrimoHoagies; Antney’s Grub; Fat Joe’s; Dad’s Stuffing; Cousin’s Grubhouse; Mi-Pals Deli; Steak Em Up and Not Just Pizza have reserved their respective sampling stations while Eddie Tully will provide the musical entertainment. Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Hollis Thomas, who enjoyed his share of sandwiches from Tony Luke’s

and Lee’s Hoagies as a player, is another one of the judges. There are three things he will be looking for from the various offerings: Taste, size and presentation. “Sometimes it doesn’t look mouthwatering, but it’s delicious,” Thomas, using a sloppy Joe as an example, said. Vilotti, who is simply going to be an observer, of course sees the bread being the star of the sandwich show. “It all starts with the bread” is a phrase his company has trademarked. “You can have the best meats and cheeses in the world, but put them on inferior bread, and you will kill the sandwich,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong, quality meat and cheese are important, but the bread makes the meal.” Mike Lane, owner of Lower Moyamensing’s Steak ‘Em Up, 2600 S. 11th St., said he will have his cheessesteaks, which earned a recent runner-up nod in the Readers’ Choice Awards, ready for guests while the judges can expect other menu offerings that are being kept under wraps. “I am excited to enter, I hope everybody has a good time and we win something,” Lane said. Just like the Pizza Olympics, which will celebrate its sixth anniversary on July 17, be prepared to taste, walk and talk. Tickets are on sale at the South Philly Review of-

fices through 3 p.m. today with a limited number of tickets available at the door. For more information, call 215-3362500. SPR

Leslie’s Cheesy Fish

Fillings for fans

I

T

he Phillies and Aramark hosted a special preview event Monday morning at Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way, and highlighted some dining enhancements. Harry the K’s will offer a new sundae menu of soft serve ice cream and an assortment of fan-favorite toppings for dessert. The outfield-situated eatery also has added Prince Edward Island Mussels, poutine, and an over easy burger, served with a fried egg. For more information, visit philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com. SPR

magine having a weekend morning when one can wake up and shout in excitement “I am going fishing!” As long as Grumpy Old Man Winter insists on hanging around like that uninvited guest at the dinner party, those plans are likely going to be delayed. Luckily, Leslie McLaughlin’s Cheesy Fish Dish can be enjoyed with a quick run to the local store. The resident of the 1300 block of Castle Avenue dresses up the night’s catch with a well-blended mixture that will melt away those bitter memories of seasons past. SPR

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

1 pound of haddock or flounder 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese 1/3 cup of flour 1 teaspoon of dry mustard 1 cup of milk

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the fish in a greased baking dish. Cover with the cheese. In a bowl, combine flour, mustard and milk. Mix well, and pour over the fish. Bake for 45 minutes.

Chiarella’s Ristorante’s Trout Pomodoro

T

Chef Felipe Morales

Chiarella’s Owners: Dina and Tommy DeFino Opened: Feb. 2007 215-334-6404 1602 S. 11th St. chiarellasristorante.com

ommy DeFino “was supposed to be a lawyer” to add to the legal legacy initiated by his recently deceased father, Anthony J. DeFino, who garnered respect for numerous endeavors, including serving as a Philadelphia Common Pleas Court judge. Instead of studying cases, the Girard Estate dweller chose feeding faces as his passion and has helmed Chiarella’s Ristorante, 1602 S. 11th St., with wife Dina since 2007. “I’ve been involved with this business, more or less, for 40 years,” the 49-year-old resident of the 2000 block of Porter Street said from his East Passyunk Crossing establishment. “We’ve gone through some changes, especially with clientele, but we’re still committed to giving people great meals and a welcoming environment.” He and his mate received support for their mission from chef Gordon Ramsay, who revamped

their offerings for a ’12 episode of “Kitchen Nightmares.” With plenty of eateries in the vicinity, including a number of Italian ones, he knows excellent provisions must top his priorities and relies upon chef Felipe Morales to amass the masses. “I love cooking and become very happy when people like what I make,” the 30-year-old denizen of Ninth Street and Snyder Avenue said. “It’s great to be able to give them tasty options and to do so in a great setting.” The Lower Moyamensing inhabitant worked on his trade at Io E Tu, formerly 1514 S. Ninth St., and Ristorante Pesto, 1915 S. Broad St., and brings his emphasis on ingenuity to Chiarella’s through five daily specials, including Trout Pomodoro, a twicea-week treat. “It’s a nice tasting fish,” Morales, with nearly seven years of

service to DeFino, said. “I take pride in making it just right.” Always eager to ponder menu additions, the professional, whom his boss dubbed “an artist,” will never grow bored with hearing orders for the featured creation. “Many ideas come to my mind,” Morales said, “but I’m not going to give up on the trout.”

1 tomato, diced 6 spears of asparagus 1 lemon (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

INGREDIENTS:

Pan sear the trout to produce a crispy exterior. Sauté the shrimp, tomatoes and asparagus, adding white wine or lemon butter to the combination. Place all ingredients onto a dish, and consider adding juice from one lemon. SPR

Thank you, Daniel & Austin Schill & Conway Family

George Fiocca I stood by your bed last night; I came to have a peep. I could see you that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep. I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear, “It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here.

To lose someone so fine and precious Since you were a little boy, Who brought us all so much happiness and filled our lives with joy. But each year on this special day, We will celebrate your birth, And treasure every moment. That you were here on earth. We took those days for granted, And never dreamt or thought, That all or lives would change so much And yours would be so short. But now we must remember, That although the tears may fall, Jimmy we’ll miss you forever You brought sunshine to us all.

The State of their union An East Passyunk Crossing hoops squad capped its bond by claiming the PIAA championship. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

Despite a personal tragedy, Neumann-Goretti senior guard Ja’Quan Newton pumped in a career-best 33 points in a divine effort for the Saints. p h o t o p r o v i d e d b y J o h n M u r aw s k i

city coronations. “In the long run, we had to see to it that we were understanding the severity of the situation and realizing just how much Ja’Quan needed us.” “We definitely look up to him,” Kimble added of the sharpshooter. “This program is what it is because of guys like him.” HAVING

final matchup versus Donegal, 55-50, the Saints entered this season not with pessimism but admirable optimism that they could continue to further their portfolio as a powerhouse. “It was important to take each game one at a time,” Custis said of the march to majesty. “We knew we have talent, but there has to be effort, too.”

ooking to secure an undefeated season, the girls’ basketball team from Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., fell 58-50 to Seton-La Salle High School in Friday afternoon’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA nal. The Saints, entering at 29-0 for the Hershey-situated duel, shot only 24.2 percent from the eld, with just ve of their 30 three-point attempts falling. Senior guard and Third-Team All-Catholic selection Emmanuella Awobajo led the Catholic League and District 12 City victors with 13 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard and First-Team league honoree Ciani Cryor contributed 12 points, ve assists and as many steals. SPR — By Joseph Myers

at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php “We wanted to make history again,” Toplyn said of earning frequent mentions in the institution’s annals. “We’d been through enough battles to know we were ready for tough games and times.” The confident ballers played a difficult nonleague slate, generating a 6-3 mark that included victories against perennial powers Chester and King, the Public League titlist. A 12-1 run through the Catholic League, which Arrigale noted is always the source of their biggest investment of energy, emotion and time, set them up for another great postseason experience, with triumphs over Roman Catholic and Phila. Electric, respectively, kickstarting their travels toward a trifecta of trophies. Winning their first three state affairs easily, they faced Phila. Electric in March 18’s semifinal at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., with Newton making history in the second quarter. With just over four minutes remaining in the frame, he deposited his 1,924th and 1,925th points off a layup to become the league’s all-time leading marksman. The Saints’ 65-53 win sent them to Hershey’s Giant Center, where Newton would prove colossal. “His will to win is infectious,” Arrigale said while reflecting on the star’s tallying a career high 33 points. “To have that in him one day after his mother passed away, it’s so admirable. Like all these guys, he’s been a joy to be around. His resumé speaks for itself.” Indeed. Newton, who last night received the Markward Club’s Catholic Player of the Year honor, finished his career with 1,972 scores, ninth best in city history, and 11 out of a possible 12 titles. He undoubtedly factored into Harper’s estimation that this is “the best senior class to walk through here.” As Kimble will be the lone returning starter, he made predictions on next year’s bunch, classifying it as a scrappy team that will not suffer any letdowns and will add more merit to the program. No matter what the future bears, Arrigale deems the present an unmatched present. “They’ve given me a great understanding of having a second family,” he said. “For that and much more, this group will never be forgotten.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. hen he enrolls at the University of Miami, Ja’Quan Newton might nd studying the works of William Shakespeare compelling, as the senior guard at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., experienced history, tragedy and comedy last week. The Catholic League MVP enjoyed the last element Friday in Hershey, as he and his Saints gained a 64-57 overtime win over Susquehanna Township to win the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA title. “He was so composed and handled everything better than all of us,” coach Carl Arrigale said of his star, who lost mother Lisa Brown to cancer the previous day. “He’s been a model of consistency and for him to come through under those circumstances amazes me.” Arrigale, of the 2900 block of South 15th Street, and his charges have likewise proven consummately constant, as the championship, the East Passyunk Crossing school’s fourth in five seasons, gave them a sweep of the Catholic League, City and State crowns. Newton, unavailable for comment as he mourns his matriarch, cemented his statistical legacy in the state tournament, but no matter his output Friday, he had long secured his peers’ admiration. “Whenever he is on, which he was most of the time, we played better as a unit,” senior Tony Toplyn said of the fellow AllCatholic honoree. “We had extra motivation to be there for him, and it was great for us to get it done and even greater for Ja’Quan to battle through.” As senior guard Troy Harper especially considered Newton, Toplyn and the other starters, senior forward Jamal Custis and junior guard Lamarr Kimble his brothers, the loss of Brown means they all have parted with a family member. Arrigale, who invited his charges to dine at his home the day she died, cared far more about their sustaining perspective than playing a game. “This year, we went through some interesting challenges,” the 2014 South Philly Review Readers’ Choice winner as top high school coach said of what amounted to a 27-4 campaign that included their sixth straight parochial and District 12
