Fighting authority To the Editor: It is so frustrating to read the article on spring cleanups, (“Let the spring cleanups begin, March 27) which I’m reading at this very moment. I reside on the 600 block of Morris Street, an absolutely horrendously filthy dirty block as far as trash strewn in the streets. I’ve tried unsuccessfully for years to organize a bit of a cleanup, and I still, every chance I get, sweep as much as the street as possible on both sides. I sweep and pick up the trash whenever possible. For instance, the night before trash pick up, before showering in the morning, and whenever I have the energy to do so. Last year around this time, I swept both sides of the street thoroughly, and obviously there was so much trash I could not carry it all. So I left piles on the white line in the street in anticipation of bagging it the night before trash night. I was told by the 311 operator not to sweep the street and that what I was doing was illegal. She added I can be charged an illegal dumping

fine for every address on the street ($300 dollars). To add insult to injury, just this morning, a Philadelphia police officer was putting flyers on windshields on the 600 block of Morris Street and I assume the surrounding area, alerting neighbors to car break-ins. What a joke! Less than a year ago, someone broke into my car and left a telephone behind. The owner was Spanish-speaking. I did not leave a message or speak to him. I proceeded to take the telephone to 3rd District headquarters, 11th and Wharton streets, and spoke with the lieutenant on duty. Essentially what he did was laugh at me, saying he cannot do anything without witnessing it himself. I do not know the law, and although I assume that he does, it just sickens me that he had no interest in doing anything. His absolutely unhelpful, lethargic personality was disgusting. People who do not think outside the box, especially in law enforcement, bewilder me.

Thinking there was a rash of break-ins in the neighborhood, my thinking was they could at least go knock on his door (I provided them with an address) and just to let him know his telephone was found in a car that had recently been broken into. It just may have frightened him enough to curtail his activity. I left 11th and Wharton feeling so defeated. Good luck in your endeavors. I certainly appreciate them. And if by chance you have any way of putting the fireplug back on my street corner, I will wash it even more thoroughly the next time. “My daughter attends GAMP and im so grateful she was given the opportunity to see Felicia’s anti-bullying assembly (“How to beat a bully, April 3). She said it was very inspiring and loved how Felicia sang along with the kids. Although my daughter has not been a victim of bullying, I feel kids especially in middle school should be exposed to the dangers of bullying and the consequences. I think what Felicia is doing for kids is amazing, and she should be very proud of herself. She may make a difference in the life of a child who is enduring the pain of being bullied. Lisa Cavalieri via southphillyreview.com

Potent rodents A love triangle grew creepy with the throwing of live rats into a Grays Ferry home. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

A

t 10:55 p.m. April 2, police took a call for a vandalism in progress on the 1200 block of South 28th Street, learning from the complainant that another woman and a group of unknown females smashed her windows, damaged her screen door and heaved a box of live rats into the house, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The victim revealed the matter is part of an ongoing dispute because she and the lead female have the same boyfriend. She disclosed that the fellow love triangle member punched her several times and took her purse, which contained identification, credit cards and $200. She saw two of the women fleeing the area in a green Chevrolet Lumina. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

October surprise The Philadelphia Police Department arrested an officer last week for allegedly threatening a man, among other charges, last fall. Officer Edward Sawicki surrendered to the Internal Affairs Division April 2 following an investigation into the 9-year veteran’s actions the night of October 20. On the Officer Edward latter date, a 37-yearold male claims he Sawicki was the victim in a minor auto-versus-pedestrian accident on the 1100 block of South Ninth Street. He contends Sawicki struck his knee as the law enforcement agent was backing up his vehicle. The complainant then pounded on the truck to let Sawicki, who was off duty, know of the matter, with the accused supposedly exiting the car, pulling up his shirt to show a gun, rushing at the figure, yelling racial epiphets at him and threatening to kill him. The man sustained no injuries from Sawicki, whom he said kept his hand on the holstered weapon, and contacted authorities, who after positive identification of their peer, confiscated the object. Based on input from Internal Affairs, the District Attorney’s Office approved the charges of terroristic threats, possess-

ing an instrument of crime, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. Commissioner Charles Ramsey has suspended Sawicki, last assigned to the 25th District, for 30 days with intent to dismiss.

Supposed assaulter nailed Police used flash information to arrest an East Passyunk Crossing man for allegedly assaulting a woman. At 9:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities ventured to the 900 block of Fernon Street, where the female told them an unknown Hispanic man had approached her from behind, pulled her to the ground and placed his hand over her mouth, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. During the struggle, the complainant dropped her phone, with the alleged offender retrieving it. Their tussle continued for a brief time, leading the male to heave the phone and flee on foot. A witness relayed the same sequence of events to authorities, Tolliver said, with the complainant recovering her gadget a short distance away. Surveying the area, law enforcement officials observed a man who fit the flash and stopped him on the 1900 block of South Ninth Street, with the victim and witness identifying him as the attacker. They arrested 24-year-old Luis Mariu Solis, of the same block, and charged him with simple assault, theft, recklessly endangering another person, kidnapping, robbery, unlawful restraint and criminal mischief.

Serial burglar sought The Philadelphia Police Department is looking for help in nabbing a man for his completion or contemplation of four burglaries last week. The South Detective Division released the following image Friday in an attempt to bust the male, who two and three days prior had done his deeds within their jurisdiction. In the first matter, authorities responded to a radio call at 7:08 p.m. April 2 and ventured to the Philadelphia Pretzel Factory, 1410 McKean St. They learned from the complainant that as he tried to close the establishment, he noticed the doors would not set correctly to lock. The site’s security system captured an unknown black male fleeing from the area after unsuccessful attempts to pry open doors and a service window. In the second matter, the complainant,

from Los Gallos, 951 Wolf St., stated he secured all windows and doors at 11 p.m. April 1 and discovered upon returning at 9:30 a.m. the next day that someone had broken out a basement window and had removed wood that had been covering an air conditioner. Nobody had gained access to the location, and nothing was missing. At 9 a.m. that same day, officers fielded a call from a complainant at Johnnie’s Restaurant, 2240 S. 12th St., and learned someone had forced open a rear door window and had made off with $100 from behind the counter. For the final occasion, police arrived at Scannicchio’s Italian Restaurant, 2500 S. Broad St., April 2 and conversed with the complainant, who had arrived at the eatery at 11 a.m. and inspected an unknown person trying to gain entry by prying open the rear door. He reported nothing taken. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-686-3013, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Accusing another man of voicing something inappropriate to his wife, an aggressive male roughed him up in the Sports Complex area Sunday. Reaching 11th Street and Pattison Avenue at 9:29 p.m., authorities encountered the complainant, who relayed that while he and a peer were walking out of McFadden’s Bar within Citizens Bank Park, One Citizens Bank Way, the soon-to-be offender approached them and accused the former of saying something improper to his spouse, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. After having a spat with the stranger, the complainant turned to talk away, but the other man hit him in the back of the head with a bottle. While on the ground, he suffered several punches to his face, with the attacker then fleeing eastbound on Pattison Avenue, Tolliver said. A Medic Unit transported the victim to Methodist Hospital for treatment of injuries that included lacerations to his head, a swollen right eye and head pain. He described the pain producer as white, approximately 35 years old, 5-foot-8 and having a muscular build and bald head.

A Point Breeze church parted with property and received damage in a weekend burglary. A male affiliated with New Macedonia Baptist Church, 1639 S. 20th St., notified authorities at 8:30 a.m. Sunday to report the matter, telling them he had secured the holy site at 3 p.m. following March 30’s services, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Roughly 30 minutes before his call, he found the front door knob loose and the side door pried open, leading to a walkthrough of the church that revealed holes cut into the ceiling. Inspecting the destruction, he determined copper pipes, radiators and parts from the heater were missing, Tolliver said, with the estimated value of the items and the presumed totals of the damage being $10,000. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/ forms.

Older adult bound Two males tied up an elderly gentlemen to make off with his possessions in Pennsport last week. At approximately 9:24 a.m. April 3, officers arrived at a home on the 200 block of Greenwich Street, with the occupant relaying that he had been returning home at around 7 a.m. when the unknown figures grabbed him from behind and forced their way into the residence, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. They tied him to a chair by using a telephone cord and a dog leash, granting them an opportunity to ransack the home and make off with approximately $1,100 and keys. The victim was able to free himself to notify law enforcement agents, Tolliver said. He described both as white, with the first being in his mid to late 30s, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9; having a medium build; sporting a bandage on his nose; and wearing a black cap and jacket and blue jeans. He tabbed the other as in his mid to late 30s, too; having the same height and build; and wearing a Philadelphia Eagles cap and jacket. Big & Tall at heart Mark Rosenfeld is retiring after a 77-year run for his South Philly family business. ■ By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

M

ark Rosenfeld met the love of his life, Mona, at the London Victory Club on Animal Night (“You can bring your pet,” Rosenfeld explained) at the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the ’80s. “I called her four times, and she didn’t respond,” the proprietor of Torre Big & Tall, 1217 S. Broad St., admitted in his office, “and then on my fifth call, she answered.” Nearly 35 years later, the club is gone and his wife has succumbed to cancer, the latter leading him to end the 77-year run of his family business in South Philadelphia. “It gives me no happiness – it’s been my life’s work,” he said as going-out-of-business sale shoppers flooded the 10,000-square foot storefront, swiping socks to suits. “I’ve built this business on my own ingenuity and hard work and the hard work of my staff. My client base has been so solid.” Torre Big & Tall has been a family affair since his grandfather and uncle led him down this path when they founded Victory Clothing in ’37. They eagerly contributed to the World War II effort by stitching together uniforms. “We were at war and everybody turned their expertise into whatever could be done to help the war effort,” Rosenfeld said. And it could be said that he has been helping since three years old, every Saturday. “I totally constructed all aspects of garments in my youth,” he said. “So I understand the construction of garments.” That factory space used to exist at the corner of 10th Street and Washington Avenue, and, as Rosenfeld puts it, employed many South Philadelphians. “Most of our factory workers lived in South Philadelphia and came to work [for Victory],” he said. Some of them even got tapped when his late father, Philip, purchased Superior Ravioli in ’76 at Ninth and Christian streets. “He started that business and took some people from the factory that knew how to cook: ravioli, manicotti, bucatini,” he noted of his patriarch. Inevitably, his father would make him choose – pasta or pants. He went with what he knew best. “My father came to me in ’81 and asked ‘Do you want to be in the pasta business or the clothing business?’ And I chose clothing because that’s what I know,” he explained. In addition to the factory space that used to be the home to Victory’s headquarters,

they also operated what Rosenfeld called “factory to you” (FTY) at 1234 Carpenter St. And that’s where the idea for Torre Big & Tall really flourished and moved to South Broad Street. As he notes, “people wore suits everyday - denim was for laborers.” But times change. President John F. Kennedy ushered in a decidedly less-formalized dress code that used to include top hats. Now, President Barack Obama doesn’t even wear a tie. “[He’s] the first President to go with an open collar, which is more of a sign of the times and the decline of the tie,” Rosenfeld said of the leader. But back in the small retail space housed inside the 10th and Washington location, they specialized in something Rosenfeld calls “quasi-custom,” which would take measurements for a client and alter garments to fit “for any size you were – so we developed a huge following of people with all odd sizes.” They were $99 at the time. AS ROSENFELD EVOLVED the business model to focus on gentlemen of a larger frame, he started to tap the underserved athletic community. When you walk through the store’s current doors, you’ll find walls lined with celebrity athletes who are just Rosenfeld’s clientele. One of his best tactics was reaching out to teams with the offer of cheesesteakstocked limo buses. He was inspired by folks like Friedman’s Shoes in Atlanta, and

he became a hit with not just Eagles and Sixers. “People would solicit teams and get turned down because they wouldn’t have the respect or confidence of the team, but clearly they knew we were delivering a solid service,” Rosenfeld explained. There’s even a photo of the proprietor posing with Wilt Chamberlain, probably the biggest star he ever clothed. “He was kind of an idol as a kid,” Rosenfeld said of the Hall of Famer, whose career included two stints in Philadelphia. He recounted a tale of a storied snowstorm years ago that left the Minnesota Vikings stranded. “About 24 players came into the store for coats and boots and sweaters. I only had myself and one other salesman and I was taking care of all these players,” he said. One bonus of catering to professional athletes? They’re “recession-proof; all these ballplayers are recession-proof.” Needless to say, the company’s been a second home for thousands of locals and has given a huge number of South Philadelphians a living, guys like Joe Piro. “They gave me the opportunity of who I am today,” he said, having spent 25 years on the Victory/Torre payroll. The tailor came to the U.S. from Italy in ’56 and he “came to the United States to see the country and never left. They took care of

m – they’re good me ppeople.” As for his and the store’s departh ture, tu Rosenfeld is isn’t too torn up about it, partly because he has two beautiful adult daughters who are about to embark on full lives and he wants to be a part of them. His 28-year-old daughter’s graduating from Georgetown Law and getting married, as is his 24-year-old daughter (both of whom got dress support from their doting dad). Piro, a longtime friend of the family, put it nicely. “Sometimes you get to a point where enough is enough,” he said. After many months of sickness, with his wife working in the store up until she physically couldn’t, her passing marked a significant moment in Rosenfeld’s life, one that, for both emotional and superstitious reasons, seems like a sign to call it quits. Hidden in the bottom corner of Rosenfeld’s framed photo collection in the entryway to his shop is a portrait of his Northeast High School football team. He kneels next to his childhood and adult friend, Chickie’s & Pete’s Pete Ciarrocchi, with the number 77 emblazoned on his chest. “77 was a number I was happy to get to,” he admitted. SPR

“A lot of people in our club are very active in the community, enjoy giving back [and are] very civic-minded,” Linda McGrane, the club’s president, said, adding the organization collaborates with Brandywine Bicycle Club four times a year for its Adopt a Highway cleanups on Yellow Springs Road near Valley Forge National Historical Park — with the latest instance having occurred Sunday. The club’s cleanup effort Saturday was one of about 75 taking place in South Philly — and among hundreds happening throughout the city — but was months in the making as it was the first-ever dedicated bike lane cleanup in Philly. The southern end of Columbus Boulevard is a rarity for bike riders. Sindler indicated it is one of the few spots where one can ride for an extended time without coming across a traffic light. And the road connects to Pattison Avenue, providing a direct route to FDR Park, Broad Street and Pattison Avenue. However, a flat could be extremely dangerous on a street that is busy with vehicles, including many tractor trailers, traveling at high rates of speed. Cleaning alongside that road could also be hazardous, so Sindler pitched the idea late last year to Charles R. Carmalt, the Mayor’s Office of Transportation & Utilities’ pedestrian and bicycle coordinator. When traffic engineers were worried about safety, Carmalt suggested the Philly Spring Cleanup’s date and lined up a police officer to follow the cleaners in a patrol car with its lights on to alert drivers of their presence. Carmalt also coordinated the use of a street sweeper to pick up bits of glass and other small debris. The task was daunting with various items tossed in the grassy areas on both sides of the road. Sindler estimated 100 volunteers would be needed to get them all. Carmalt,

who lent a hand to the effort, agreed. “I think it’s going to take a lot more work with all the debris that accumulated, but we can get started,” the latter said. The team traveled southbound from Oregon for a bit before crossing and returning northbound with Roxborough’s Katie Eberhart, the vice president of the club’s board, pushing a shopping cart filled with the collected trash. Items they collected from along the side of the road included prophylactics, hubcaps, pieces of carpet, bottles, a bucket of roof tar and containers of fryer oil. Sarah Clark Stuart, policy director for the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, who helped to coordinate and also participated in the event, noted there are about 230 miles of streets with bike lanes in Philly. She hopes to help the club organize more bike lane cleanups, naming a revisit to Columbus or the Grays Ferry Bridge,

34th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue, as future options. “Because there’s so much high-speed traffic, it gets a lot of debris and broken glass,” she said of the latter. But for now, Sindler hopes the club’s effort made a difference on Columbus Boulevard. “I want to come out here and ride flat free,” he said.

MEANWHILE SEPTA EMPLOYEES from the Southern Depot, 1940 Johnston St., tidied up the west side of Marconi Plaza, 2700 S. Broad St., while members of the Friends of Marconi Plaza cared for the east portion. “It means pride in the area you not only work but also live,” Thomas Marcucci, senior director of transportation for SEPTA’s Southern Division, said, noting volunteers from Boy Scouts, City Year and Girl Scouts, as well as employees’ relatives,

came out to support his employer’s Philly Spring Cleanup projects. For the depot’s director of maintenance, Jason Griffin, it was his second year leading the endeavor at the park. “Many people see SEPTA as a nameless, faceless organization,” the South Jersey resident said. “To see us in the neighborhood, it’s about a connection.” The friends’ Philly Spring Cleanup coordinator Janet DeLuca was thankful for SEPTA’s assistance, which also included another team sprucing up matters at SEPTA’s Southern Depot and surrounding blocks. “Every bit of help is appreciated and noticed,” DeLuca, of Juniper and Bigler streets, said after thanking Griffin. “You will see a difference in the park, and we know that. We’re trying to really get people to appreciate — we call it an urban treasure.” After DeLuca informed Griffin of the upcoming activities at the park, including an Easter egg hunt and photos with the Easter bunny that occurred that afternoon, he thought of how important green spaces are in urban environments, reminiscing of the abundance of parks where he grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. However, today’s children sometimes take these spaces for granted, he said. “You have to drag them out, and this is a great place to drag them to,” he noted of Marconi. Steven King brought his daughters willingly to Marconi Saturday morning, and both Zanaeya, 6, and Zyonna Black, 4, were thoroughly enjoying themselves. The activity that was simultaneously going on at the playground gave King some peace of mind. “It’s a good feeling,” the resident of 20th and McKean streets, said. “I don’t have to worry about them getting cut by glass or some of that other stuff [people] just throw [to the ground].” SPR

Evasion of privacy AP Point oint Breeze dweller is presenting a play culled from her childhood writings. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

A

s an oft-commended visual artist, Ellie Brown has used myriad means to reveal the interplay between life’s complex components and simple sides. Primarily gaining renown as a photographer, the 39-year-old has traded the power of a lens for that of pens, transforming her girlhood reflections into “Dear Diary, Bye,” her debut play running through Sunday. “It’s so amazing to have this as a living, breathing thing,” the Point Breeze inhabitant said of the Plays & Players Theatresituated show. “This sounds kind of trite, but it’s like a dream come true.” Truth and validity comprise the 75-minute creation, as Brown constructed it from her 1984 diary, an account through which she pondered such topics as self-awareness, love and family. Her father, who directly factored into the original composition, with the scribe chronicling feelings surrounding her parents’ divorce, inadvertently inspired the project upon a March 2013 visit. “He read it out loud, and it just struck me as funny to have a man relaying my emotions,” Brown said of her patriarch’s role in plotting her playwrighting identity. “I definitely started to see its potential as a performance piece.” Having professionally projected herself into the visual arts field in 1997, she fostered her philosophy that art

LIFESTYLES comes from divulging and encouraging the expression of “something that’s real” by entering it into last June’s SoLow Festival. With fellow South Philly occupant Seth Reichgott directing and Harry Watermeier conveying her entries, Brown used the early summer readings at The Chapterhouse Cafe, 620 S. Ninth St., as the impetus to craft an endeavor with an elevated emotional arc. Blending cringe-worthy moments with desires to engender camaraderie between the narrator’s existence and patrons’ paths in life, the resulting brainchild finds Arlen Hancock, another South Philly denizen, with stage manager Nicole Labadie-Bartz rounding out the foursome of local participants, offering the diary as his own, not that of the 9-year-old Brown. “It makes for an interesting tension between identities,” the author said, noting hiring a man keeps the project from being a literal presentation of a young female’s management of an evolving, frequently perplexing personality. “We’ve removed the predispositions people might have had and by removing gender from the equation, we’re focusing on the overall humanity of the involved parties, especially the audience.” Having retreated to the recesses of her memory to devise the emotive piece, Brown confessed reliving so many in-

stances made her surprisingly raw. Though Facebook has come to serve as her source for solace, she feels an urge to start writing actively again and whereas her girlhood record abounded in mystery, her reworking of it teems with certainty. “I definitely don’t want this iteration to be the end,” she said. “Maybe it can become a trilogy or breed other ideas.” WHILE SHE REGARDS writing as a powerful pastime, Brown deems her primary vocation an opportunity to preserve provocative occasions and attitudes and to reserve one’s inclusion in discussing the relationship between observation and creation. Because of her parents’ similar penchant for perception, she knew she would become an artist, with selecting a medium as the lone mystery. “I started taking photos at 11 so as not to forget things and people,” the Bostonborn figure said. “It became comfortable to me to look for meaningful projects and develop my craft.” Earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Massachusetts College of Art and San Jose University, respectively, she has generated a gigantic resumé that includes accolades such as a Leeway Foundation Window for Opportunity Grant; dozens of solo

and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad; well-received publications; residencies; and lecture opportunities. “I’ve had some amazing people come into my life, so I’ve just looked to combine their inspiration and my self-belief,” Brown, who has taught likewise scrutinizing pupils at locations like Moore College of Art, Rowan University, Ithaca College and South Korea’s University of Ulsan, said. “Wherever there’s an opportunity to grow more passionate about art through communal exchanges, I want to be involved and help others to be curious, too.” Moving to Philadelphia on a whim a decade ago, Brown, with the alteration of existing books, mixed media, painting and printmaking rounding out her visual artist status, fell for the city’s do-it-yourself spirit and found greatness in its grittiness, as evidenced by “Urban Detritus,” an investigation of the compromised identity of Kensington. Having lived in the oncethriving section, East Oak Lane and Fishtown, she has resided in South Philly for six years and sees its visual artist community as a burgeoning band of innovators. “There’s definitely not a shortage of occurrences and interactions to draw from,” Brown said. “We’re all looking to reveal what drives our days.”

Classifying herself as a documentarian, the introspective individual, who had begun keeping a diary while in the first grade, tackled an irrepressible need to feed her focus on the human condition by participating in the SoLow Festival. Intensifying her consideration for how the child is the mother of the woman, to tinker with a line from poet William Wordsworth, and giving everyone the momentum to find strength in what remains behind have meant more than just providing Hancock with a forum to bend gender, so to speak. “It becomes his diary,” Brown said, “and through the presentation, the audience ends up as the diary because he’s speaking to them.” Certain psychologists consider childhood the standout stage of one’s life, but no matter one’s age, curiosity must remain a core piece of all pursuits of growth. For Brown, “Dear Diary, Bye” can prove a comedic and compelling reminder of that. “Many people say ‘Write what you know,’” she said. “I know we’re all looking for answers, so why do it alone?” SPR

Understanding zombies

W

hy is no one speaking up for one of the most aggrieved minorities in the U.S., zombies? Northwestern University athletes want to unionize to get better working conditions, but who has it worse than zombies? Zombies suffer from stereotyping. If George Romero isn’t making a movie or AMC didn’t keep renewing “The Walking Dead,” their unemployment rate would soar. Republicans would blame it on President Obama’s weakness in confronting the zombie threat. It’s a little known fact that films and TV series featuring zombies use real zombies rather than actors to save money. Zombies don’t belong to the Screen Actors Guild (something the entity is desperately trying to rectify). Minimum wage laws don’t cover zombies, resulting in a recent attempt by Walmart to recruit them (except for positions where they greet customers). Actually, Republicans like zombies when it comes to health coverage because they don’t need any. Once you’re among the undead, even the Affordable Care Act doesn’t give a rat’s behind about you. Essentially the life (if that is the correct term) of a zombie is a simple one. You stumble around town looking for meat (whether it has been inspected by the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t seem to matter) until a human blows your brains out. Once you have no brains left, you either die or request a lifetime subscription to Glen Beck’s TheBlaze. Zombies are the one minority in which Democrats seem to lack compassion. I hate to be cynical, but it may have something to do with zombies’ frequent failure to turn out to vote (except in Chicago). Democratic National Committee head Debbie Wasserman Schultz has suggested her party give away pork chops at polls to entice a greater zombie turnout. However, vegans, being almost as influential in the Democratic Party as the Koch Brothers are in the Republican Party, nixed the idea. And, unfortunately, for Democrats, zombies just don’t seem interested in the quinoa salad vegans suggested as a substitute. There is some doubt cast about whether there are actually gay zombies. If it means increasing the turnout on Election Day, Democrats are interested in amending same sex marriage laws to include zombies. As far as we can tell (not being able to get too close), it appears zombies are asexual, which Republicans believe shows

■ s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

being gay is strictly a lifestyle choice. In case it turns out zombies tend to be Democrats, Republicans are insisting they show voter ID. Zombies don’t qualify for a driver’s license, and although some apparently have birth certificates, Democrats are certain this is another devious attempt by Republicans to suppress the minority vote. Because zombies don’t drive, many of them ride public transit. One can recognize them as those who refuse to move to the back of the bus, sit in the area reserved for seniors, pregnant women, and the disabled, or sprawl across two seats. Zombie bus riders also tend to listen to music without headphones, favoring groups such as The Grateful Dead and, you guessed it, the Zombies (although younger zombies favor the Dead Kennedys). You might think one thing in the favor of zombie riders is they aren’t littering the aisles with empty soda bottles or half eaten bags of potato chips, but they do leave bones, which tend to offset any cleanliness advantage. School teachers have found a good percentage of their students in their teen years are zombies. One educator told me you can always tell who’s a zombie because when you call on one of them and ask for their homework, they either stare at you aimlessly or say they don’t have the assignment because some human ate it. The National Rifle Association is torn between fighting for the rights of zombies to bear arms (they’d rather eat them) or argue that non-zombies need guns to defend themselves against zombie attacks. I have always wondered why if a zombie is already dead, a simple gunshot to the head bothers them at all. Democrats argue the idea of arming zombies is as silly as allowing folks to carry guns into churches ( the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre replied, “so what’s so silly about that?”). Vice President Joe Biden indicated there is no need for a gun to defend yourself against zombies when you can outrun them. Biden laughed when he said it, so half of his audience thought he was joking and the other half claimed he never jokes, it just comes out that way. Uncle Nunzi believes you can distract a zombie in pursuit by carrying a couple of meatballs in your pockets and being ready to throw them. A recent poll showed Fox News viewers tend to believe more in the existence of zombies than in climate change, which they say is just a theory. Sean Hannity says he is sure zombies are dead liberals because he’s noticed they always lurch to the left. At least 4,000 friends and family of mine checked off “Like” on Hannity’s comment on my wife’s Facebook page. Zombies have found a friend in the Association of Shoe Repair Shops of America. Their motto-- “Zombies may be dead, but with all that walking, they still need soles.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Laura (Scarlett Johansson) is a predatory alien haunting Glasgow, harvesting male victims with a mysterious mission - perhaps becoming human herself.

Can’t-miss dermis ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

A

fter netting acclaim for his gritty debut feature “Sexy Beast,” renowned music video director Jonathan Glazer returned with “Birth,” a polarizing sophomore effort that starred Nicole Kidman as a woman reunited with her dead husband—who’s purportedly reincarnated as a child (Cameron Bright). The film’s reception was far from great, but in the subsequent decade, many have gradually exalted it as an unsung masterpiece. To his fans’ certain delight, Glazer outdoes himself with his long-gestating “Birth” follow-up, “Under the Skin,” another tale of a mysterious entity inhabiting a delicate human form. Clearly inspired by Stanley Kubrick though not beholden to his influence, Glazer opens “Under the Skin” with a nearwordless, elliptical transition, which calls to mind “2001: A Space Odyssey’s” HAL 9000 and its famed, stone-age-to-nuclearage match cut. Hypnotically, planet-like orbs morph into a robotic-looking sphere, which in turn transforms into a human iris. This is our intro to, and the Earthly arrival of, Laura (Scarlett Johansson), a predatorial, parasitic alien of unknown origin who’ll scour Glasgow for male victims. Why is Laura stalking these men and luring them into an inky black hallway that swallows them into oblivion? And why is a man on a motorbike following her every move? It all seems to have something to do with Laura’s native race harvesting human bodies, but “Under the Skin” is never so forthcoming to say. The film is a marvel of artistic restraint, unfolding as pure, challenging cinema that’s both beautiful and wide open to thematic interpretation.

To the eerie tune of Mica Levi’s unforgettable score, Laura slowly comes to identify with humanity, and in the process, identify herself. Indeed, identity, and how we define it, is what Glazer wants to explore most. It’s telling that the concept of rebirth carries over between his second and third features, not to mention the ways in which women are expected to use their bodies. It all seems indicative of the notion that Glazer, a mesmerizing master with only three films under his belt, is capable of continuous rebirth himself.

Though she stood no chance against “Blue Jasmine” star Cate Blanchett, fellow Best Actress Oscar nominee Judi Dench gives one of last year’s finest performances in “Philomena,” the true story of an elderly woman seeking the son she was forced to give up in youth. Co-starring and co-written by Steve Coogan, the British dramedy challenges both cynicism and religious hypocrisy, while refreshingly showing that one needn’t be young to be progressive. Maureen’s Pignoli Nut Cookies

A warm draft

A

T

hrough their Hungry for Next Season promotion, the Philadelphia Eagles and Dietz & Watson will send one lucky fan to New York City’s Radio City Music Hall to announce the team’s fourth-round draft pick May 10. Diehard supporters, who will also receive a weekend stay in the Big Apple, have until April 25 to tweet, using #EaglesDraft through text or photo, why they deserve to make the declaration, or to complete a form at philadelphiaeagles.com/news/ draft/2014.html. SPR

bounding in nutrients, pine nuts often complement fish, meat and vegetable dishes, with many connoisseurs baking them into bread. While such uses certainly charm taste receptors, what of the desire to sweeten up one’s life courtesy of the goodies? East Passyunk Crossing’s Maureen Fratantoni has the solution. The resident of the 1900 block of South 11th Street has long lauded Pignoli Nut Cookies, with her version promising a “chewy and delicious” product. Her favorite creations, they just might make you nutty for their flavor, too. SPR

INGREDIENTS: 2 tubes of almond paste, about 15 ounces 1 cup of pure cane or refined sugar 2 egg whites A handful of pine nuts

DIRECTIONS: Mix the almond paste with sugar and egg whites to a

smooth ball. Take a teaspoonful at a time off the ball. Roll into a ball with your hands, and put the balls on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Place the pine nuts on top of each cookie until covered. You will have to press them on and then lightly press the cookie down a little flatter with the bottom of a glass or your hand. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, or until set and lightly brown.

Johnny Chang’s ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

hile watching The Travel Channel several weeks ago, I happened upon a rerun of “No Reservations,” where retired chef and recent Peabody Award winner Anthony Bourdain decided to eat lunch at a restaurant in New York’s Chinatown. He was joined by a young Chinese-American chef who told him the restaurant serves authentic Chinese food, which is not on the menu, along with Chinese-American dishes. Bourdain wanted crispy noodles, won ton soup, egg rolls and sweet and sour pork. To paraphrase him, he said these dishes were the Chinese foods of his childhood. It brought back a floodgate of memories. I grew up on these dishes, along with shrimp and lobster sauce, chicken or shrimp chow mein with ice cream and fortune cookies for dessert. It’s Americanized Chinese food, and there’s nothing wrong with it as long as it is well-prepared. There are many Vietnamese restaurants in South Philly, but the neighborhood lacks Chinese ones. I recall reviewing JC Chinese many years ago, but somehow I missed Johnny Chang’s. The eatery was the South Philly Review’s Readers’ Choice Award winner as best ethnic/non-Italian restaurant, so I decided to try it. The dining room has a small sushi bar and polished wood tables decorated with Chinese characters. I was not surprised to see sushi and sashimi on the menu because although I thought Japanese food jumped the shark years ago, many Asian sites have added this cuisine to their menus.

The restaurant is BYOB and moderately priced. It was relatively quiet but I noticed a number of people picking up take-out. There is delivery service as well. I was curious about the sushi and sashimi offerings. Dinner began with a combination platter ($17.95) that easily serves two. Since I like spicy tuna rolls, I asked our server if we could substitute it for the plain tuna. The answer was “yes.” The colorful eye-appealing platter consisted of slices of fresh salmon, yellowtail tuna, lovely ahi tuna and cubes of white tuna. The fish was fresh and cool and just needed a bit of soy sauce, which I poured into a small round dish. Assorted sushi included shrimp, ahi tuna and white tuna, thinlysliced and perched on perfectly prepared sushi rice, which lacked the sometimes gummy texture I find from time to time. Pretty squiggles of carrot, thinly-sliced ginger and hotter-than-usual wasabi finished the platter. Wor wonton soup for two ($8.50) is found on the majority of Chinese menus throughout the city. Homemade chicken stock formed the base for the soup, which featured shrimp, sliced chicken breast, slices of pork and an assortment of vegetables including snow peas, broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, baby corn and napa cabbage. I discovered the wontons of my childhood floating in the tasty broth. The wrappers were thick and doughy, filled with a small amount of ground pork. The steamed dumplings ($5.50) were a disappointment. Although they were house-made, I found the noodle wrapper Restaurant Review:

A bite should produce a crispy sound, but, alas, this one was cold and a little mushy. I hoped the half Peking duck ($10.95) would make me smile. The platter consisted of a mound of cold shredded iceberg lettuce, slices of roasted duck breast and two drumsticks. The duck lacked flavor and was ice cold. Pancakes and plum sauce are the necessary helpers here, but the pancakes were quite frigid and had the texture of rubber. the room except for a couple who arrived during our meal. To be fair, the sushi and sashimi were nicely prepared. It was not the Zama, Morimoto or Izumi experience, but I suspect the Japanese fare at Johnny Chang’s is the way to go. One tip of the toque to Johnny Chang’s. SPR

A fighting chance A South Philly-training boxer hopes to gain national renown. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

Christian Carto comes from an impressive line of fighters and has garnered a high national ranking for emulating his relatives’ hard-hitting ways. P h o t o b y R o b To r n e y

learn so much, and I’m doing that,” Carto said. “There’s still a long way to go, but I’m excited.” THE FORWARD-THINKING THUMPER began boxing at age 8, gravitating toward it through a combination of his estimation of its character-building qualities and his lineage. His grandfather, Frank Carto, won the ’40 Diamond Belt and Mid-Atlantic Amateur title, with uncles Joe and Nunzio also lacing up the gloves, the latter also

claiming Diamond Belt and Mid-Atlantic distinction in ’45 and ’46. “My family’s history has been a big influence because I know I come from winners, and I want to be the best I can be, too,” the youth said. “I have a great work ethic, so I’m trying to honor their example.” Commencing his amateur career by 11, Carto gradually grew more in love with gaining ring-centered renown and two years ago blended his enthusiasm for

at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php having fun with an urge to earn kudos. Traveling to Las Vegas for the National Junior Golden Gloves pageant, he split two bouts, with his efforts catapulting him to a ninth-place national ranking. “In the beginning, I didn’t really have any plan, but getting ranked helped me to become more serious,” Carto said of his identity. “I knew I had it in me to be somebody.” Others quickly received proof of that sentiment, as last summer included his winning the 15- to 16-year-old 106-pound division crown at the Missouri-situated Ringside World Championships, gaining Fighter of the Day acknowledgment at Gardner’s Basin in Atlantic City and winning a Regional Junior Golden Gloves contest in Haverford. Joining Rosati’s Gym in September, he has benefited from his instructor’s wisdom by splitting two fights each at the Oxnard, Calif.-held National PAL Championships and the Reno, Nev.-situated Junior and Youth Open, respectively. “I really want to become better, so the fights I have lost are going to motivate me,” Carto said. For his Saturday bout, which his beloved Uncle Nunzio attended, he did not need to worry about having another defeat from which to draw lessons, as he used a solid plan to upend his opponent. As a reward for his warring ways, Carto will travel to Nevada again for the May 11 to 17 national tournament, for which he has great expectations. “It’s too early to know who I’m going to fight, but if I stay focused, I should be fine,” he said. His parents and brother Frankie figure to lead the cheers, as Carto noted they have always offered tireless support. He has gained backing from his St. Augustine Prep classmates, too, meaning come the 2016 Olympics Games in Brazil, he stands to have plenty of fans if he represents his country. “That’s the goal for my boxing career so far,” Carto, who has moved up to seventh in the land within his weight division, said. “I’m really excited about that possibility.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. wing to his Italian heritage and dedication to being a diligent boxer, Christian Carto might appreciate the concept of sprezzatura, which Merriam-Webster denes as “perfect conduct or performance of something (as an artistic endeavor) without apparent effort.” Combining quickness and allegiance to tactics, the locally trained 17-year-old ghter displayed his version of the word Saturday, as he won the 108-pound Pennsylvania Golden Gloves championship in Chester, earning next month’s trip to Las Vegas for a shot at national glory. “No matter what I go on to do, it’s something that nobody can take away,” the Deptford, N.J. resident said Monday at Rosati’s Gym, 1937 S. Chadwick St., which, along with the Grays Ferry Boxing and Fitness Club, 1500 S. 28th St., has sculpted his frame and affirmed his commitment. “Whatever success I’ve had has come through a lot of effort and hard work.” The teenager had known heading into his bout with Tyrone Arzeno-Badlanz that his persistence stood to produce a victory, with a recent Cherry Hill-situated win over the same competitor as added inspiration. Carto won all three rounds against his foe, a 2013 National Golden Gloves runner-up, at the Delaware County-based Must Fight Boxing Club, relying on the coupling of physical focus and cerebral stability. “Mickey says the mental side is more important,” Carto said of the Newbold site’s proprietor, who claimed 1981 Golden Gloves honors as a 132-pound pugilist. “I knew I needed to keep my mind on my goal and throw my punches. I always work hard, and I think that gave me a real advantage Saturday.” Refusing to bask in his achievement, the Garden State denizen devoted part of Sunday to kicking off his next training regimen, running five miles and looking forward to returning to Rosati’s, where he preps six days a week. “This kid really has it,” the owner, formerly of 16th and Jackson streets, said of the blossoming bludgeoner. “The talent and tenacity are there, so it’s going to be interesting to see how everything unfolds. I know I’ve been impressed so far.” “I came here because I thought I could

The first annual Hall of Fame event started in the morning with a golf outing at Pitman Golf Course. There was a great turn out with over 30 golfers in attendance and a special appearance from the sun. The beautiful weather was very fitting for such a special event and everyone had a great time. The event continued that evening at 8pm at the Waterfall Room on Water Street where guest, including family and friends of Di Pietro and Parrillo met to celebrate these two wonderful men. Mr Di Pietro, among many other things, severed as the Coordinator of Athletic Ministry for Region 6 from 1974 until his passing in 2013. Dan Parrillo devoted himself to the work of Catholic education and community and also served as “Baseball Czar” for Region 6. It was a great night filled with dancing, singing, remembering and honoring the life and the legacy of these two great men.
