Broad St. “We all agree that Gottlieb truly deserves this,” emcee Celeste Morello said of lionizing the 1916 alumnus of the Lower Moyamensing-situated school. “His accomplishments are testaments to finding a passion and maximizing involvement in it.” The South Philly-based historian headed the en-

lanche Burton-Lyles gladly inhabits two worlds, one powered by praising the past and the other infused with a focus on the future. The always-occupied octogenarian will unite her universes Saturday by helming the diamond anniversary celebration of fellow South Philadelphian Marian Anderson’s historic Lincoln Memorial performance. In doing so, she will honor the singer not only as an admirer but as a recipient of her encouragement. “She is such a part of our cultural background that all generations, especially the younger ones, should know of her example,” Burton-Lyles recently said from Anderson’s 2011 National Register of Historic Places-designated abode at 762 S. Martin St. “She remains relevant today for her talent, of course, and for the way she conducted herself and sought to be a positive presence and influence.” Along with numerous devotees of the lauded South of South songstress, the resident of the 1100 block of South 19th Street will head to The African American Museum of Philadelphia as an esteemer of her output and a dreamer of opportunities for potential-profuse youths. Having acquired the aforementioned home 16 years ago and transformed it into a museum and the base for a thriving historical society, she has certainly succeeded in localizing Anderson’s achievements and works to prolong her mentor’s enthusiasm for finding noteworthy successors. “There’s so much talent to experience,” the Point Breeze denizen said of having overseen the development of classical and performing artist scholars, including South Philly-situated figures, since the late 1990s. “We are quite often giving them the bridge they need.” Many aided individuals will join Burton-Lyles for the year-in-the-making extravaganza, during which she will received the Founders Award for preserving Anderson’s legacy. The three-hour event will feature piano selections from the honoree, but she knows full well the day will belong to her prized confidant. “She had amazing gifts but seemed separated from them,” Burton-Lyles said of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Grammy Award winner. “By that, I mean she was so human, so unassuming and had not a trace of pride.” Anderson also possessed immense resolve, as evidenced in ’39 by her professional handling of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s refusal to let her sing before an integrated audience in Constitution Hall. Through President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s intervention, she received redemption on April 9 the same year, Easter Sunday, no

Lack of Patriotic pride To the Editor: I just burn [up] that those who come to America from foreign countries find jobs, open businesses, become successful, buy homes, and have families, and are able to send money to relatives overseas, but will not spend several lousy dollars for an American flag to fly proudly in front of their properties. Strong case, in front of the business corridor on South Shunk Street and from Porter Street to Moore streets, there is not one single flag on the entire perimeter. Even more disgraceful are the American-born citizens in the Italian Market on South Ninth Street. On such a holy sanctimonious day, we should honor and remember those killed in battle. The sick feeling forced on me driving throughout South Philly and counting just 13 American flags. There was much partying with drinking and grills going full blast. I am so very proud to be an American that has given me so very much that I fly not one but

two flags on every patriotic holiday. What has become of yesterday when almost every house proudly displayed American emblems? “The home of the brave and the land of the free” completely passed by and I say: Shame on you. Now get back to your grill and beer. I truly believe an issue should be made by all of this. But isn’t that a terrible shame though? Especially South Street, with its huge success, fails to honor the country who gave them the privilege to display our flag. Someone must make an issue of this disgusting lack of patriotism and honor the country, for America has turned rather into one huge party. That simply sickens me, and should [sicken] you too. I remember when it was treated for what it was meant to be: Somberly, and respectfully. There is, after all, a time to party but also a time for reflection. Frank Cavallaro South Philadelphia

Accepting exceptions To the Editor: What is wrong in this world? The uproar over [the fact that] a NFL draft pick is gay. (Word on the Street, May 15). So what? Who cares what he does in his private life? He gets his job done and does it well. That’s all that should concerns fans. I truly believe LGBT people are born that way and can’t change. I always hear people say they don’t want to change. I personally don’t believe that. Why would they put themselves in harm’s way? People are quick to judge and ridicule them. They are people. Just a little different. Josephine Girilli South Philadelphia

tudents have been hard at work all year, and it’s time for some well-deserved recognition. Before the words summer vacation start echoing through the hallways, the South Philly Review and the Young Chances Foundation are looking to recognize Rising Stars — some of the top performers in grades kindergarten through 12. Principals, guidance counselors and teachers – it’s your job to make sure your worthy candidates make the nomination list. Nominees must be from South Philadelphia or attend a school in the 19145, 19146, 19147 or 19148 zip codes. Being a straight-A student or valedictorian is a strong point, but not the only criterion being taken into consideration. Maybe your student has made a dramatic academic turnaround since the first semester or overcome a personal hardship. We also want to hear about the talented individuals who excel in the classroom as well as numerous extracurricular activities. It can be anything from athletics to school clubs to volunteer work. The submission deadline is noon June 3. The selection committee will review all of the entries, with the winners appearing in the special June 26 edition of the South Philly Review. Contact the South Philly Review at editor@southphillyreview.com, or call 215-336-2500, ext. 121. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/ news/briefs.

uthorities headed to CVS, 1901 Oregon Ave., at 11:05 p.m. Saturday to handle a complaint. Meeting with staff and a witness, they learned two males entered the site and used handguns to make demands for cash, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Before fleeing the area in a silver Ford SUV that the complainants caught heading westbound along Oregon Avenue, the offenders took an undetermined amount of cash and cigarettes. Minutes after responding, police located the vehicle pulled against the curb on the 2000 block of Snyder Avenue, Tolliver said, with the windows down, lights on and the keys in the ignition. They also observed and recovered physical evidence from the automobile. Descriptions of the thieves was not available at press time. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

A woman kept an attacker from taking her possessions in Queen Village. Walking along the 700 block of South Front Street at 11:10 p.m. Monday, the complainant had an unknown male approach her from behind, with the stranger blaring “Give me your money,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He grabbed her purse and pointed an umbrella at her, but the undeterred figure replied by grabbing his sweatshirt’s hood and tightly clutching her property. Her screams led him to let go and flee eastbound on Queen Street via a bicycle. The complainant reported nothing taken, Tolliver said, and suffered minor cuts to her hands and left toe. She did not seek immediate medical attention and described the male as black, 15 to 18 years old and 160 pounds; having a thin build and a light complexion; wearing a gray hoodie with the hood up; and riding a bright blue bike. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

burglar. At 2:55 p.m. May 20, footage captured an unknown male approaching a home on the 1100 block of Rodman Street, police said, with the individual ringing the doorbell to determine occupancy. Receiving no response, he forced open the front door and made off with cash, electronics, jewelry and other valuables before fleeing in an unknown direction. The total value of the goods was undetermined at press time. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Relative distress Police arrested a Point Breeze motorist for allegedly bumping another vehicle operator’s car. At 8:05 p.m. Monday, the complainant, who had parked on the 2100 block of Sigel Street, had the reported offender approach his driver’s side window to shout “You owe my aunt money,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The other individual supposedly punched his face and reached into the car to attempt to remove the keys from the ignition. As they struggled, the complainant said he observed a black handgun in the purported attacker’s waistband and tried to drive away. The other man supposedly boarded a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu to chase the fleeing motorist and struck his bumper several times. After a pursuit, he observed a police vehicle at the intersection of 27th and Wharton streets. Having informed the officers of the situation, he positively identified the man, who was allegedly still following him. Authorities arrested 31-yearold Kyhem Penn, of the 2100 block of Sigel Street. They had not filed charges against him as of press time. SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/policereport.

Such was his friend’s devotion to his vocation, Pollack said. In attempting to bulk up the league, Gottlieb also showed immense pride in the success of his adopted city’s initial franchise, arguing for approval to make Overbrook product Wilt Chamberlain, then a University of Kansas standout, a territorial draft choice, meaning a proper pick for the Warriors because Kansas lacked an NBA squad. Marriage for all

Two local same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses as soon as they could. n By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

M

ay 20, when U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III ruled that denying same-sex couples the rights and benefits of marriage was unconstitutional, City Hall’s Register of Wills began issuing same-sex marriage licenses. Nearly 120 of them were issued in the initial three-and-a-half days since Jones’ decision, and many South Philly couples were among the first in line. One such duo, Oscar Cabrera and Christopher DiCapua of the 1300 block of South 13th Street, have been together for almost 19 years. Both Spanish professors at the Community College of Philadelphia, the Passyunk Square residents met in graduate school at the University of Kansas in 1995. “On Tuesday we went as soon as we could. We were excited, so we said let’s just do it,” DiCapua said. “We had been thinking about it for years,” Cabrera said. The couple was among the first to file for a license, and on Friday, they were married by Mayor Michael A. Nutter in the Mayor’s Reception Hall. “On Thursday afternoon, we got a call from the mayor’s office,” DiCapua explained, making their marriage not only historically significant, but also quite public. “We ended up being in all the newspapers, which I wasn’t expecting. When we were getting married, we had 10 cameras in our face.” But it’s a price the two were willing to pay to take part in such a momentous occasion. “In some ways, when you’re among the first, that happens, and we accept that and in some ways we’re kind of proud to have been the first and pave the way and put a face on our community,” DiCapua said. Carin Berger, the primary attorney who advises and facilitates clerks in the offices within wills (Orphan’s Court, wills and marriage licenses), was tipped off on Monday afternoon by the ACLU that they might be accepting some lawful same-sex marriage applicants after the following

Passyunk Square residents Christopher DiCapua and Oscar Cabrera, from left, filed for their marriage license on Tuesday afternoon. Carolyn Caton, from left, and Noelle Foizen are equally as eager about taking the next step. day’s decision. “It was a historic day and it was long overdue,” Berger said. “And we welcome the applicants with open hearts and minds and we continue to do so.” The requirements are a current valid photo ID, proof of social security number in the form of an official document, proof of the dissolution of a previous marriage by certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate, and $80 in cash or money order. Valid licenses require a three-day waiting period to use it and a 60-day period of use. So what does it mean, specifically? “First, I think of love and what it means to be totally committed to another person in an enduring and loving way,” Burger said. “The benefits that follow would be financial: Filing a joint tax return, life insurance, benefits, pensions, any benefits through your employer, health insurance, any benefits that would accrue to any married couple are now available to same-sex couples.” Noelle FoizeN disturbed her partner, Carolyn Caton, in slumber on her way to work on Tuesday morning: “Babe, I think the ruling’s coming through today,” she said, but Carolyn wove her off. “We were following the cases and we thought the rulings might come in June and even though things had been going well for marriage equality in other states, I wasn’t confident that PA would tow the line.”

Foizen and Caton, residents of the 1500 block of East Passyunk Avenue, have been together for about 13 years (“We’re starting to lose count,” Caton said). The Temple graduates are both macro-level social workers who finished Masters in Social Work at Columbia University’s School of Social Work. Carolyn works in City Hall in the Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Services developing a program called PowerCorpsPHL (an AmeriCorps-like collaboration between the mayor’s and governor’s offices). And Foizen works for the Managing Director’s Office under the Deputy Mayor of Public Safety with emergency management. “I just happened to be at the convention center for a conference,” Foizen said, she was following progress on Twitter, and at around 2:30, she “tweeted at the City to see if they were giving out marriage licenses.” A friend in the Mayor’s Office of Communications sent her a message to say “Go.” But as Caton reminded, same-sex couples have been fighting and will continue to fight for years to come. They’ve worked for years to establish power of attorney for each other with lawyers, “We’ve had to shore that up outside of marriage. That’s why, for me, I’m so happy about marriage because it’s a wonderful step for equality and the validity of relationships,” Canton said. “People can still get fired for being gay,” Foizen said. “This is an awesome little step but we still have a ways to go.”

Cabrera shared a similar outlook. “To me, emotionally, it’s very important to feel married to Chris,” he said. “My heart was warmed by how welcoming and warm and human,” DiCapua said. “And accepting,” added his husband. “To have the city embrace and accept this in a public way was very important for us and for the whole gay community of course,” Cabrera concluded. Berger added that in the 39-page decision that came from Harrisburg on Tuesday, Jones hoped this would be a sign of the evolution of equality that’s been going on over the past decade. “One of the things he said was today we refer to this as same-sex marriage, but one day soon, he hopes, everybody will refer to it just as being married. In other words, there will be no distinction between marriage and same-sex marriage,” Berger explained. The judge, a known conservative, ruled on the side of law. “You can’t rule on emotions, you have to rule on the side of the law and what the law and facts support and interpret the law properly based on facts,” Berger said. “It ruled the existing law to be unconstitutional and that’s why same-sex marriages are permissible and out-of-state same-sex marriages are to be recognized in Pennsylvania.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. lanche Burton-Lyles gladly inhabits two worlds, one powered by praising the past and the other infused with a focus on the future. “We are quite often giving them the bridge they need.” Many aided individuals will join Burton-Lyles for the year-in-the-making extravaganza, during which she will receive the Founders Award for preserving Anderson’s legacy.

LIFESTYLES less, by treating more than 75,000 people to her stunning vocal skills in an open-air concert. The Lincoln Memorial-situated breakthrough heightened her already robust reputation and has continued to amaze millions. “And I’m proud to be one of them,” Burton-Lyles said of her musical peer, whose birthplace on the 1800 block of Webster Street she owned for a brief period last decade. “Marian was possessive of such a unique voice and character. It has given me great joy to be an advocate for her and to have the chance to discuss the spirit of communication through music.” THE CONNOISSEUR OF melodies and warn personalities has made music her life’s calling, with her passionate-for-the-piano matriarch paving the way for her to fraternize with notable figures, including Anderson, for whom, through family connections, she would begin to perform by age 8. Following the immortal interpreter’s Academy of Music concerts, BurtonLyles, already a commended artist, would delight Anderson and her friends, noting in the former an immense sense of ease. “She made me feel so at home,” the raconteur said of the icon, who knew her as “Little Blanche” and who exhibited last-

ing curiosity in her progress as a Curtis Institute of Music and Temple University enrollee. “It was a delight to have her as a supporter.” Burton-Lyles went on to offer similar guidance over a three-decades-long career with the School District of Philadelphia. Likewise blessed with intense ambition, she became the inaugural African American female pianist to receive a Bachelor of Music degree from Curtis and the first woman bearing such characteristics to perform with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Blending loves for classical and popular works and altruistic interests, she has collected numerous accolades, including the Shirley Chisholm and Mary McLeod Bethune awards and the Philadelphia 76ers Community Service plaudit. Though those have greatly registered with her, her most engrossing endeavor, the promotion of Anderson and the by-products of the singer’s efforts, has proven the most endearing. “I would never state that people would have forgotten about Marian if not for me,” Burton-Lyles said. “She was someone who, though never seeking praise, truly deserved it. I’m just a conduit for her influence on us all, socially and creatively.” Being that conductor has come to in-

Broad St., and an eponymous recreation center at 744 S. 17th St. She is striving to link those locations, the museum and Anderson’s birthplace through an educational pavilion, which the society’s website proclaims would produce an audio/visual interactive tour of the environs. “We’re enthused about anything that can make people enthusiastic about Marian’s work,” Burton-Lyles said of the star, who died in ’93, aged 96, in Oregon. “We have to help people to see how phenomenal she was.” Though Burton-Lyles played for Anderson, she never had a chance to accompany her for a performance. Graduation Day

Motors isn’t a good example since they’re recalling 11 millions of their cars, but you get the idea. Use that lousy, low-paying first job as a learning experience. No, the boss isn’t always right. Often he or she nowadays is just another jackass who got lucky, but when you start out you’re in no position to judge. Remember how you are slighted, and make sure when you climb the ladder, you don’t repeat those slights. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you can’t change the world for the better. You can. That should be your goal in climbing the ladder, but you need to acquire wisdom before you can do it. Your mother thinks you’re already the cat’s pajamas. She’s supposed to think that way. She’s your mother. But you’re not the cat’s pajamas, besides which, as Uncle Nunzi reminds me, cats don’t wear pajamas. The world will keep reminding you that you’re nothing special until you earn it. Something very important to remember when you seek a career: You’re going to spend as much time, maybe even more, at your workplace than with the one you love (except of course if you’re in love with your secretary, which as Uncle Nunzi reminds me, can cause complications you are much better off avoiding). Try to find a job that’s something you love to do, even if it is not the job that pays the most money. You see, if you love your job, then it is no longer just a job. The luckiest people in the world are not necessarily those making the most money (although Uncle Nunzi reminds me that the two are not mutually exclusive), but the ones who love what they are doing. Uncle thinks it might be useful if I share a couple of my work experiences with you. College placement services are not always helpful. When I graduated Temple as a hot shot broadcaster, their placement service suggested a job opening at a discount department store calling out the specials (“Twenty-five percent off garden hose today”). My happiest jobs turned out to be the jobs where I was paid the least. You have to earn a living, but never, ever take a job just because it pays more. If you do, I guarantee you will be the grouch for the next 40 years who constantly reminds his colleagues at work just how crappy the job is. You must be able to respect the job to do it right. And you must always do the job right if you are ever to be happy. Uncle adds that you should always buy fresh vegetables, not those in the supermarket freezer. Don’t ask. Uncle says that one of the keys to life is fresh produce. That and homemade wine. It is time to go forth, not without trepidation, but nevertheless joyously. SPR Comment cardella.

With its scarily accurate storyline and impeccably gory graphics, the battlefield blockbuster “Black Hawk Down” has impacted audiences nationwide.

Five great war films n By R. Kurt Osenlund movie RevieweR

W

ith Memorial Day fresh in your memory, revisit these films that found unique ways to honor soldiers.

Full Metal Jacket (1987) “Full Metal Jacket” may be Stanley Kubrick’s most unnerving film — a Vietnam saga that aggressively depicts the transition of men into gun-wielding beasts. Everyone snickers at the f-bombs delivered by R. Lee Ermey’s drill instructor, but when a persecuted recruit, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, exhibits the treatment’s effects (and furthermore, when Matthew Modine’s protagonist goes on to grapple with it), the effect is chilling. Black Hawk Down (2001) Before “The Hurt Locker,” Ridley Scott gave us “Black Hawk Down,” another war film that embeds you so completely in the action, it’s difficult to process the fact that it’s merely a movie. Based on a failed Somali mission that erupted into the Battle of Mogadishu, and adapted from a book by former Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Mark Bowden, the film sees Josh Hartnett lead a stellar cast through whiz-bang hell. The Patriot (2000) Roland Emmerich isn’t quite what you’d call a respected filmmaker, but the disaster maestro does have his high points, and this underrated Revolutionary War epic is one of them. Mel Gibson plays a pacifist turned army leader, who finally fires back when two of his sons are killed (the elder played by Heath Ledger). Moments of grief are some of Gibson’s finest as an actor — and we need those moments

to distract us from the rest of that man’s drama. The Deer Hunter (1978) If you’ve seen it, you certainly haven’t shaken it. This sober Vietnam drama, which focuses on Robert De Niro, John Savage and an unhinged Christopher Walken as three tormented prisoners of war, made headlines for its cringeworthy scenes of forced Russian roulette. But “The Deer Hunter” doesn’t grab one by the throat until the boys show how war has changed them — a war that felt like a gun to the head in itself.

The Thin Red Line

The Thin Red Line (1998) Terrence Malick’s masterpiece ties spirituality to war in a way no other film ever has. Many will call it indulgent, but the director’s cast of dozens (Sean Penn, Jim Caviezel, et al) superbly acts out his vision of combat as perhaps the most existential of experiences — on the edge of life and death at every moment. ncle Nunzi feels it’s his duty to make sure I don’t get a big head. He is not as impressed as some folks that the Review honored me for my 50 years as its columnist by putting my photo on the front page. Uncle reminded me my smiling face is likely lining the bottom of bird cages right about now. And that lesson is one I would like to share with today’s graduates as they go out into the world to make their way. You have to be able to handle the ups and downs that life dishes out. At graduation, you’re led to believe that you’re hot stuff by your parents, aunts and uncles. The minute you doff your cap and gown and enter the real world, you are treated like the newspaper in the bottom of the bird cage. And man, do those parakeets unload on you. It’s not success you have to learn to handle in life, but failure. I know this all sounds a bit bleak, but somebody has to tell you the truth. I have my Uncle Nunzi to keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. You have this aging columnist. Don’t get down about it. Feel lucky. Sometimes a cold shower can do you good. You’re very special inside your small world to those who love you. On the outside, you begin anew as just another schlub who has a lot to prove. You will find yourself surrounded by skeptics. Those good grades you got were nice. Real nice. They earned you a big hug from Aunt Carmella and probably a nice graduation gift. Out here, the A in Sociology won’t stop you from getting your ample butt kicked if you don’t apply yourself. Figure it out quickly. Your opinions that impressed your family as being brilliant are not all that interesting to the outside world until you earn its respect. There was only one Einstein, and the likelihood is you ain’t him. Yeah, I know I used the word “ain’t,” but sometimes the word has its place here in Jungleland. Charles Darwin’s law, not the Golden Rule, is in play here. The weak don’t survive very well. Sometimes they don’t survive at all, especially if the Republicans take Congress this year. Uncle Nunzi taught me there is no job beneath you when you begin. All work honestly pursued is honorable work. Unless your folks own General Motors, you’re starting out at the bottom of the ladder. Maybe General

Pauline’s Sweet Tea Pound Cake Cupcakes

L

News on brews

ook at this week’s recipe. Does it look any different than a normal cupcake? Well, for those who can’t figure it out, Pauline Capece isn’t shy about letting her fellow residents know that her Sweet Tea Pound Cake Cupcakes are gluten-free. Instead of pushing her eating-healthier mindset, the resident of the 1700 block of Stocker Street said she enjoys tricking some of her non-gluten-free friends with her sweet offering. Pauline noted many of them don’t pick up on the twist because “they taste like the real thing.” SPR

IngredIents: 2 cups of gluten free allpurpose flour 1/2 cup of gluten free rice flour 3/4 tablespoon of baking powder 1 teaspoon of Xanthan gum 1-1/2 cups of milk plus seven tea bags (for tea milk) 2 sticks of butter

To make the tea milk, combine the 1.5 cups of milk and the tea bags. Heat, and steep, then cool, and squeeze. In a separate mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, followed by one cup of the cooled tea milk, lemon juice and lemon zest. Add the flour mixture, but do not overbeat.

Fill the cupcake pan with paper liners, and fill each 3/4 with the batter. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, until the tester comes out clean. To make the frosting, combine the butter with the 10X sugar. Frost the cooled cupcakes. Refrigerate, or freeze individually for later. Makes 24.

Pennsport/Whitman American/Continental IHOP: 3 Snyder Ave., 215-339-

July day, I was judging a salad competition at the Rittenhouse Hotel. The public relations official took me aside and said, “Fritz is having some people in for dinner. The restaurant is closed on Monday and he would like you to come.” A buffet table was set up, covered with an old lace cloth. Platters of sweetbreads en route, red ripe sliced Jersey tomatoes, Jersey asparagus, a whole poached wild salmon, pork schnitzel, creamy potatoes au gratin and a large tossed salad immediately enticed us all. Here were simple foods, in season, at their best. Dessert was a blueberry cobbler with homemade rich vanilla ice cream. Chef Franco Martorella, a South Philadelphia native, worked at The Four Seasons Hotel and then went on to the Ritz Carlton. During a Book and the Cook dinner, he too showed us that simple fare is usually best. Potato pancakes topped with smoked salmon and caviar, a green salad, roast rack of lamb with baby vegetables and a fruit tart were served with wines produced by Molly Chappellet from her Napa vineyard. Babbette’s Feast won the Academy Award for best foreign film in 1988. It tells the story of a French woman chef who lives in a bleak village in Norway, wins the lottery and spends all her money on one meal to be served to town folk who have never seen such luxuries. After a screening of the film, I was fortunate to get an invitation from the owners of La Truffe, a now-shuttered French resRestaurant Review:

taurant, which was among my favorites. Chef Georges Perrier, Chef Jean-Marie LaCroix and other French-born residents of Philadelphia, were also there. The chefs recreated Babette’s Feast. Turtle soup, quail wrapped in pastry and roasted to perfection, beef, cheese and a light sponge cake were served. The chefs tracked down the wines but could not find one of the cheeses. They found a close substitution. I miss The Book and the Cook because it highlighted so many of our restaurants. “Emeril.” I tucked into gumbo, jambalaya, Gulf shrimp and his signature peanut butter pie. This meal was a revelation, for I had never tasted authentic Cajun/Creole cuisine until I sat down to that memorable meal. Lagasse joined Edward and me during dinner and we chatted for an hour. It was as if I were taking a class in New Orleans cuisine at the Culinary Institute of America. Space does not allow me to reminisce about all the meals which have influenced me. hrough the years, I have enjoyed a number of memorable meals, many in South Philadelphia restaurants. When I reviewed Tre Scalini, 1915 E. Passyunk Ave., and found the fare so uncommonly delicious, a friend told me, “Now we will never get a reservation.” Chef Lee Styer of Fond, 1537 S. 11th St., instinctively knows how to make his ingredients sing. Spring asparagus with a poached egg and some frisee I enjoyed four years ago is still locked in my memory. So is the rabbit ragout over homemade pasta at Paradiso, 1627 E. Passyunk Ave., served up on a cold November evening in 2004. Perfect fluffy omelettes, crab cakes benedict and oversized salads are among my favorite dishes at Hawthorne’s, 738 S. 11th St. The house-made pickled herring at Noord, 1046 Tasker St., brought me right back to my grandmother’s kitchen where we pickled schmaltz herring together when I was a girl. When I hunger for Vietnamese fare, I head over to Le Viet, 1019 S. 11th St. I have never been disappointed. I learned about the food of Puglia at L’Angolo, 1415 W. Porter St., which has been going strong for 14 years. I think the finest Mexican fare is at Las Bugambilias, 148 South St. Memories of meals past are filed away. They often influence how I approach a new restaurant or what to look for when I make a return visit. Some of you may recall Deux Cheminees, Chef Fritz Blank’s French restaurant which is now Vedge, a fine vegetarian establishment. On a brutally hot

Also, special thanks to Sheryl Penrose, Diane Mackey, Helen Crocetto, Carol Palange and Albert Orsatti, whose hard work did not go unnoticed. Dynamic and dynastic An East Passyunk Crossing baseball team romped to its fourth league crown in six seasons. n By Joseph Myers Review Managing editoR

irst-year coach Kevin Schneider needed very little time to deem the baseball players from Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., difficult to defeat, as the teenagers instantly divulged a desire to sustain their reputation as worldbeaters. The resident of the 700 block of Mountain Street received impressive proof of their fire Friday, as the Saints buried Roman Catholic 11-0 at La Salle College High School to claim their fourth league title since 2009. “The tradition at the school is great, but we had to go out and create our own identity,” the Blue Division Coach of the Year said of his charges, who, in the second year of double-elimination play, crafted a 6-1 mark that included five straight triumphs. “I don’t think anybody really wanted to play us. We were prepared to go to war.” The Cahillites quickly became casualties, as the East Passyunk Crossing-based victors won the two-contest final by a 22-1 score, with the 10-run mercy rule ending each afternoon. The Saints tallied 37 runs during their playoff march, but no matter how hallowed the hitters proved, the title became theirs thanks to the threeheaded pitching monster comprised of senior Charlie Jerla, junior Pat Doudican and sophomore Ethan Pritchett. “We are at our maximum performance level, and it was great to put it all together against Roman,” Jerla, of the 1500 block of South Second Street, said of dumping their Red Division opponent. “We’ve known all along that we have the talent, and we got our chemistry together

at the best time.” The future Marist College attendee earned Second-Team league honors as a hitter and a hurler and looked forward to being a standout at the plate and on the mound last week. He perfected the premiere task by smacking a two-run thirdinning double and completed a staggering postseason campaign by compiling a five-inning shutout. Whiffing eight in the effort, he allowed four hits and kept his earned-run-average at triple zeroes. Over 16 innings, he surrendered nine hits and struck out 13. He had hoped to up the figure to 14 as the soon-to-be final batter stepped to the dish, but he more than settled for the outcome, a comebacker he tossed to first baseman Josh Ockimey. “Charlie was just dominant the whole playoffs,” junior outfielder Bay To, who led the Saints with eight runs scored, said. The First-Team contributor and Southwest resident noted the Saints have succeeded because they look to play complete contests where they give nothing to the opposition. The pitching staff almost pulled off a flawless demonstration of his

sentiment, as it yielded only 10 scores in 46 innings and fanned 40 foes. “Winning the championship just validates everything we’ve been doing since the fall,” Schneider said of the unprecedented six-victory trek to the championship. “The coaches issued them challenges, and they met them, especially after every loss.” The SainTS, who improved to 20-4 by sweeping the final, needed to regroup sporadically during the regular season but required a gut check May 13 when they fell 5-2 to Cardinal O’Hara at McNichol Field, 25th and Moore streets. The setback, which came two days after they downed Archbishop Carroll 4-0 at the same location, sent them to the Losers’ Bracket, meaning five consecutive wins would be necessary for them to revel. “There was no real sense of panic,” junior second baseman Vinny Vaccone said of accepting their assignment. “We just wanted to go one game at a time and win the championship.” The resident of the 1200 block of Wolf Street rejoiced May 15 when Doudican,

pro sports at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php the division’s pitcher of the year, proved his bat is as potent as his left arm by securing a walk-off home win against Archbishop Wood. Earning a date with the defending champions, the Saints, behind Jerla’s masterful performance and a second-inning single by junior shortstop and First-Team league selection Justin Curtin, beat the La Salle Explorers 1-0 at McNichol to set up the Losers’ Bracket final rematch against O’Hara. “It was great to beat them,” To, who stroked a double in the pivotal third inning, said of the 3-0 Pritchett-orchestrated win at Widener University. “It certainly was,” Schneider added, noting that following the La Salle game, the players felt nobody would halt their journey. Still, though, teams never win titles on paper, so the Saints eagerly anticipated the matchup against Roman, which entered with a 3-0 playoff ledger. Because of the double-elimination setup, the Cahillites needed only one victory, but the Saints left them looking for it in a big way. May 21’s “First Final” at Widener became the Doudican Show, as the Lower Moyamensing product collected three hits and six RBI to complement his eight-strikeout performance in an 11-1 annihilation. “For the second game, we just wanted to show our best and bring the title back to South Philly,” junior catcher Tommy Nardini, of the 2900 block of South 15th Street, said of the other outburst. “I was thinking, ‘We’re really about to do this,’” To said of taking the field for the final inning. Once Jerla’s toss met Ockimey’s glove, the Saints could claim one-third of their championship plan fulfilled. They will venture to Ashburn Field, 20th Street and Pattison Avenue, 11 a.m. today to face Philadelphia Academy in the Class AA title tilt. The outcome will determine seeding for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament, but no matter the number before their names, the Saints consider themselves blessed. “I don’t think we can get much stronger,” Jerla said. “We’re pumped.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124.
