wouldn’t say we’re stronger than ever but I would say we’re working on being stronger than ever, and we’re working on making our market more customerfriendly so that the customers that used to come down, and don’t anymore, will revisit the market,” Domenick Crimi, the owner of Cappucio’s Meats, 1019 S. The family-owned butcher business has been going strong since 1920, and Crimi sees his goals for his term as leader of the Association fairly simply. “One of the biggest goals is to get the press out, to get the word out that the Ninth Street Market is alive and well, with some new faces and some old faces,” the proprietor said. “As we like to say, ‘Come visit the Italian Market again for the first time.’” The Market has been a staple of South Philadel-

But as the Association’s business manager and vendor coordinator, Michele Gambino, puts it, it’s always been about food. “If you walk up and down the street, things are very familiar. Word  e-mail  Mail on the Street Honestly speaking How can the City curb violence following the shooting death of a 3-year-old Grays Ferry girl?

“Everything starts with a moral reality; there is a moral decay, not just in this city, but in the nation. ... It’s about gaining a more moral mindset.” Robert Stone, Broad and Jackson streets

“... Parents need to educate their children about right and wrong because it all starts back to the children’s roots.” Shaheien Ali, 20th and Morris streets

To the Editor: After reading “Forward thinking” by Robert Rivera-Amezola (July 31), I had to look at the front page to make sure the paper was the South Philly Review and not one of the alt-weeklies. Those papers usually are home to the condescending, pseudo-intellectual forms of letters like Robert’s that use convoluted logic to make a point. They dismiss the opinions of people like Joe Cirella (“Reflections of the good ol’ days,” July 10) who write plainly and honestly, as being “simplistic” in their observations about society. And I find Robert’s assertion that Joe’s “ruminations” as “dangerous” downright laughable. I’ve never “sanitized” the past. We’ve always had crime and other societal ills, but not at the epidemic levels that exist today. I happen to be a child of Italian immigrant parents and lifelong South Philly resident, so I understand real diversity, having lived it my entire life. But what does it have to do with what Cirella wrote? I’ve witnessed many hardworking Italian immigrants with impressive skill sets. Why do you have to

be “selective” by focusing on new Central American and Southeast Asian arrivals? That Asian community has been in South Philly for almost 40 years now, so they’re not new. How about taking an “activist stance” on illegal immigration and hold politicians accountable for the porous southern border in this country? That’s one of many “very real problems” close to home. Finally, I find it ironic that Robert quoted the “All in the Family” theme song. That show, by liberal Norman Lear (another irony), wouldn’t even get on the air in today’s politically absurd climate. I’ll take a society with real timeless values that aren’t labeled as an “imagined past” over one that uses rationalizations and euphemisms to justify a distorted value system. Vincent DiGregorio South Philadelphia

Epiphany of Our Lord Church, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Lowe’s on Columbus Boulevard. Its team of dedicated volunteers spent an entire day beautifying our spacious grounds. Personnel incorporated lovely bird baths as well as benches on the Winton Street area. Decorative stone paths were inserted together with a delightful assortment of begonias and zinnias. The statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is enclosed in a small shrine. The entrance along Jackson Street was tendered with similar care while magnificent arrangements of flowers were placed near the crucifix. An array of annuals and perennials were planted with loving care near the “Welcome Sign.” And, in honor of the Blessed Mother, a stone garden was created near the statues. Our church’s grounds have truly been transformed! We invite everyone to visit and share in our excitement. Many thanks to the entire Lowe’s organization for providing a generous community service. Your efforts were greatly appreciated! Carol A. Pasquarello South Philadelphia

Difference Maker nominations

T

he fifth annual Difference Makers issue will be hitting doorsteps this fall. Just like the last four years, the South Philly Review is seeking nominations from its loyal readers. Who are the Difference Makers in your community? Who are the people who go above and beyond the call of duty to assist others? Here is your chance to tell us their stories. They can be teachers, volunteers, coaches, doctors or any other profession. All entries will be reviewed by our selection committee, with the best ones being profiled in our very special Oct. 9 Fall Guide. Those who were selected previously are not eligible. In 250 words or fewer, tell us the story of your worthy candidate who resides or works in South Philadelphia, and send it our way via e-mail, fax or regular mail. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 12. South Philly Review 12th and Porter streets, Philadelphia, PA 19148 Phone: 215-336-2500 ext.121 Fax: 215-336-1112 E-mail: editor@southphillyreview.com

Douglas Woods

n Monday, the Philadelphia Police Department announced the captures of 22-year-old Brandon Ruffin, of the 2300 block of Wharton Street, and 22-yearold Douglas Woods, of the 1700 block of Ellsworth Street, in conjunction with the Friday death of Tynirah Borum. Authorities responded to the 1500 block of South Etting Street at 9:40 p.m. and located the child, a resident of the 1600 block of Christian Street, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. She received transport to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where personnel pronounced her dead at 10:21 p.m. Police contend that a 24-year-old male, who received a gunshot wound to the head that required assistance at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, was the intended target and listed him in critical condition, as of press time. A 28-year-old woman endured a gunshot wound to her left arm, and a 21-year-old man also suffered a blast to his right leg. Authorities listed both in stable condition. As of press time, details were not available on Ruffin’s charges. The court system denied Woods bail, and he awaits an Aug. 20 preliminary hearing on charges of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, firearms violations and related offenses. Tynirah’s family has planned a viewing at 9 a.m. tomorrow, with a service to follow at 11 a.m. at Church of the Redeemer Baptist, 1440 S. 24th St.

POLICE REPORt

Police are seeking two figures who assaulted and robbed a woman in Lower Moyamensing. Authorities reported to Cookie’s Tavern, 2654 S. Alder St., at 1 a.m. Saturday and learned from the complainant that she had left the location after an altercation with her boyfriend, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The woman contends two individuals were agitating her in regards to the incident, leading her to tell them to mind their own business. She walked to the front steps of a closed establishment on the 1000 block of Oregon Avenue and sat down, with one of the antagonistic bar patrons spitting on her and the other pushing her to the ground, Tolliver said. They proceeded to assault her with closed fists and kicks to her face and body, leaving them time to dump her purse’s contents on the pavement and make off with a Samsung Galaxy S4 cell

phone, $40, identification and medication. Residents of the 2600 block of South Warnock Street yelled for the male assaulter to stop, with him and his female accomplice fleeing the area along the same street. The victim described the male as either white or Hispanic, 5-foot-10; and wearing a neon shirt and sneakers and the woman as black, 22 to 28 years old, 5-foot-3; being heavy set; having braces and wearing a dark dress. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Home, where the #heart is #PhillyHomePortrait takes off with the help of a South Philly Instagrammer and documentarian. n By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

B

illy Cress and Austin Hodge met in person for the first time at an Instagram community meet-up in Old City, but they’d been admiring each other’s photos over digital space for months. They happened to be taking the same images. “Me and him, we take pretty much the same subject and edit them almost exactly the same,” Hodge said. And that’s houses or homes, addresses around Philadelphia that capture imaginations and stoke all kinds of thoughts: wonder, aesthetic admiration, awe, sometimes fear. #PhillyHomePortrait has since taken on a life of its own with Instagrammers across the city following suit with their own favorite domiciles. Cress and Hodge’s Instagram posts using the hashtag yield hundreds of “likes” and comments, sometimes from outside of the city, that their posts instill an appreciation for a city that’s often wrongfully ascribed descriptors like dirty, rude and filthy. At one point, their main focus would almost definitely be Rittenhouse Square, Fitler Square and Queen Village due simply to age and character. It’s hard to deny that those three neighborhoods don’t have a great deal of charm built into their brick facades and casted cement frames. Cress and Hodge tend to find intrigue in brightly-colored doors, uniquely-appointed windowscapes or overgrown hanging gardens. “Most of our popular ones are from the Rittenhouse area, Queen Village and Society Hill,” Hodge said while mosquitos nipped at our ankles in the backyard of American Sardine Bar, 1800 Federal St. “For the majority of the people, the houses that look prettier are more appealing.” It just so happens that, when he explores his Newbold neighborhood, the eye-catching factors are less-often beauty and old-world charm. His snap of a home at South Colorado and Dickinson streets portrays a dilapidated rowhome with papers and posters in the window and posted on the peeling door, a shopping cart chained to the stoop and a tangle of fencing and decorative pottery. At South Bouvier and Mifflin streets, Hodge found striking the juxtaposition of a bright blue door next to a far-less-radiant twin. “A good handful of people are using [the hashtag]. I think it’s awesome,” he said. “It gets people to go out and explore things that they’ll pass everyday but not pay attention to. As I like to call it, it’s visual awareness.” The hashtag has indeed spread. Cress and Hodge are by no means the only IG users employing the moniker when encountering a striking home. “Kind of the goal of this whole project is to get people off their asses and explore - even if it’s not houses, explore something that stands out,” Hodge added. Back in March, they teamed up for a three-artist gallery show at Metropolitan Bakery, where Hodge works. They printed four-inch squares of their favorites and posted them

around the room and sold 10 limited-edition books with perhaps the fanciest of homes. Hodge said their third book, which they’re working on now, will focus more on “everyday houses.” Cress’ Capture of South Fourth and Fitzwater streets is striking for its purple door, sherbert-colored walls and pale pink trim. At South Hancock and Catharine streets, he found framed steps, unfilled by cement, but instead populated with peonies and wildflowers. The unspoken thrill is the narratives and imagination we all build around homes we only see from the outside. Who lives there? What are their lives like? How on earth did that color end up on their siding? “Sometimes I’m curious who does own the house, but then again, if you look at the house itself, they put decorations in front or they put anything on the house. That can help you determine what kind of person owns the house,” Hodge explained. For instance, one of his favorites, a Kensington residence, had American flags in the windows and a small security

camera at the door. South Philly may not be littered with charming, Revolutionary-era rowhouses that have been gardened and maintained to perfection. In fact, the number of new homes popping up makes it less desirable than some of the gems that could be mined in Packer Park, Girard Estate and along South 13th Street. But as Cory Popp, a multi-media journalist who called up Cress and Hodge to ask if he could tag along and make a mini-documentary put it, “a lot of people think this city is dirty, but I think there’s an increasing number of people that have pride for the city and its beauty.” The resident of the 1500 block of South Broad St. applauds the IG duo and agrees with Hodge that it has the power to open eyes. “It’s a reminder, even if you’re walking to ACME on Passyunk Ave., you’re going to pass some beautiful things,” Popp said. “Open your eyes and look for it - be aware.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. italian market continued from page 1 eating,” the 2000 block of Emily Street resident said from the Association’s Visitor Center, 919 S. Ninth St. She compelled readers to think of all the time periods the Market’s endured. “Depression, wars, recessions, economic good times, changing demographics, people fleeing and coming back to the city,” she listed, “through all of that time it has survived. And it has survived because everyone loves to eat.” The Market and Association experienced a few periods of dormancy, but in 2000, with a rejuvenated Italian Market Festival backed by a revitalized Association board, they doubled down on establishing the Market’s strength and guaranteeing it’s here for generations to come. “We came up with five-year goals and ten-year goals,” Gambino explained, “because we know we have to bring the market into the next 100 years and everything’s changing. One of our goals was to revitalize the street and part of that was to revitalize the curbstands. The curbstands are what separate Ninth Street from the entire United States.” That’s included dogging missing vendors who may have vacant curbstands, even while paying the $300 monthly rent, for when they’re coming back and if they’ll allow another business to use the space temporarily. There are currently 69 curbstands on South Ninth between Christian Street and Washington Avenue, the two densest blocks for the sidewalk-friendly businesses. And two of them are brand new: Cookie Ciliberti’s 2 Hot 2 Handle Hot Sauce (909 S. Ninth St., Stand No. 8) and Dorrie Lambert’s Ginger Snap’s Grocery, right next to Ciliberti. Ciliberti was formerly involved on the Association board but left to spend time on developing her sidewalk small business.

ThaT would include the myriad of licenses required of curbstand businesses: business privilege, weights and measures, health department, business taxes, to name a few. Ciliberti joked that when Gambino came to check on her aunt Betty Ann Mongelluzzo’s flower shop (Betty Ann’s Italian Market Florist, 902 S. Ninth St.), she handed Gambino a stack of licenses, including an alarm registration fee ($50). When Gambino put out the call for applications to fill empty curbstands, she got an enormous response. But once potential

vendors realized the paperwork and rent that’s required, the eligible and able small business owners dwindled. “We probably got about 150 requests, and we sent paperwork to all of those people,” Gambino detailed. “Out of the 150, we probably got back about a dozen applications. Out of the dozen variable applications, there were probably about four that could start a business.” But even with license and registration fees and monthly rent, small businesses can still offer deeply-reduced prices on produce, dairy and fruit. “We love the fact that that’s the case,” Gambino said of the Market’s reputation for offering cheap eats that are fresh and healthy. “The reason they can sell produced affordably is there’s way less overhead.” As she points out, curbstand business

Ninth St., and Crimi’s Cappucio’s. “Everything’s going well,” Amado Sandoval, a part-owner with family members who runs the month-old eatery’s bar program, reported. They’ve received praise from a number of city publications and blogs and reports that the community’s been welcoming. “After the first week, we felt like a part of the family. The response in the neighborhood has been all good,” Sandoval said. He and his brothers Maximino, Augustin and Dionicia could be seen as representative of the influx of Asian and Latin communities that populate the curbstand businesses. And as Crimi makes it clear, as long as the stands are being used, he doesn’t care what color their skin is. “They’re the face of the Market. Ninth Street has always been about the curbstands,” the association president said. In addition to changing neighborhood demographics, he knows that new generations don’t always want to follow in their parents’ Ninth Street footsteps. “You want your kids to do better than you did so you put a kid through college and they go off and get a suit-and-tie job,” he said. Many families who’ve been up and down South Ninth Street their whole lives don’t hold on to their curbstand plots and give them away to eager immigrants. “The Mexicans work just as hard as the Italians, and they’re good people,” Crimi said, “and we can’t have empty stands.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. amison Foreman esteems each acting endeavor as a chance to fathom aspects of his humanity and to instill in patrons a greater sense of their identities’ possibilities. Beginning tonight, the 26-year-old will further his fascination with combining contemplation and consideration as Jim O’Connor in “The Glass Menagerie.” “He’s the character who comes closest to who I am,” the resident of the 1800 block of South 12th Street said of the Tennessee Williams creation. “There’s this positive restlessness within him that’s akin to what I’m going through. We want to explore ourselves and compel others.” The East Passyunk Crossing inhabitant is helping Commonwealth Classic Theatre to celebrates its 10th anniversary summer season with a three-week run at the Center City-situated Off Broad Street Theatre. The 1944 play marks his fourth collaboration with the Media-based entity, including the recent repletewith-South-Philly-residents production of “Twelfth Night.” Touting Williams’ text as teeming with rich descriptors and images, he also reveres its relevance to contemporary society, a blessing that puts its author on par with some of Foreman’s favorite scribes, namely Anton Chekhov, Henrik Ibsen and William Shakespeare. “The flow of the script is just as illustrative as that of Shakespeare’s works and allows as much attachment to the language,” he said. “Plus, when we look at what it says about the difficulties of economic inequality, that really hits home with today’s audiences.”

LIFESTYLES His role finds Foreman playing a comforter, both of himself and Laura Wingfield, the owner of the title collection, and siding with the sentiment that life and art love imitating each other. Just as O’Connor aspires for improvement, his portrayer yearns for novelty and will experience it next month. “I feel as if I’ve just lifted off the diving board and am at the apex of the jump,” Foreman said of plans to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree through the Academy for Classical Acting, a partnership between the Shakespeare Theatre Co. and George Washington University. “There’s still the fall to get into the water, and the water is September.” Before he reaches the metaphorical milestone, the thespian is reveling in having another local opportunity to tackle a superlative opus, as “The Glass Menagerie” further fuels his interest in executing works that not only sate his storytelling urges but also surfeit his poetic sensitivities. In leaving an emotional residue he hopes will help to alter viewers’ perceptions of the world, the stage presentations engender within Foreman a call to continue to enrich himself. “I’m always demanding more of myself,” he said. “With each new assignment, I find

n s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

myself taking courses in that time period and in those eras’ thought processes. I love investing the time because the work is that captivating.” As ForemAn Adores Shakespeare, one could contend, to borrow a bit from “Hamlet,” he is “to the manner born” as a performer. His parents met as regional theater practitioners, with his mother inserting him into productions once she began helming directorial duties. “Acting is essentially the family business,” the Virginia native said of his introduction to memorizing and mesmerizing. “Having exposure at a young age pretty much set me up for this career, and I’ve become so enamored with disappearing into any role for the glory of the art.” Foreman made musical theater his foremost pursuit and analyzed its serious and escapist qualities as a registrant at The University of the Arts, with Charlie Gilbert, the former director of the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts and another East Passyunk Crossing denizen, helping him to secure his South Philly abode. Once a degreed individual, he appeared in a Baltimore staging of “Damn Yankees” and a District of Columbia offering of “Sweeney Todd,” with a transformative trip to China

for a tour of “Fame” also proving his beginner’s pluck. “I soon realized I had a craving for a tad more depth and desired more of the classical theater scene,” Foreman said, noting the “beautiful qualities” of the language within the latter. “I’ll never knock musical theater, which still goes down as my first passion, but it’s been great to experience so many different sorts of projects.” Pennsylvania has proven a profitable source of variety, as he has aligned himself with standout presenters such as the Adrienne Theatre, Azuka Theatre, New City Stage, Walnut Street Theatre and Inis Nua, InterAct Theatre and People’s Light & Theatre companies. He has especially enjoyed gracing stages in Philadelphia, as he sees himself and his ilk as rejecters of ridicule directed at theater’s potency. “The last year alone has featured so many companies putting on immensely social conscious works,” Foreman said. “There are so many challenging pieces, it’s pretty clear we’re not playing small ball in this city.” The wherewithal-abounding artist added he senses traces of agitation among his peers, as they look to maximize what he believes is the city’s “unfulfilled promise.” While he loves conversing with his con-

temporaries about the future of their field, he adores aiding youths in developing delight for their interpretive and creative gifts, which he encourages as a pianist/instructor for the Arden Theatre’s Hamilton Family Arts Center. “Just like with adults, I base what I do with the children on a deep love for and understanding of what art can do for a person’s life,” Foreman, whose melodic endeavors include the 2009 FringeArts Festival musical “Realm of the Unreal,” said. “It’s fantastic helping them to use context and intellect to create a new vantage point through which to view life.” With “a treasure chest of motifs” and other ideas, the impending graduate school student knows his diligence could yield critical regard, but nothing will tempt his grounded nature to meet the puffy clouds of pride. “I’m looking to grow as an artist, but I’m only temporary,” Foreman said. “It’s art that’s going to live on.” SPR For tickets, commonwealthclassictheatre.org. Traveling man

B

ig deal, our mayor likes to travel. You want him to stay in City Hall and order in when he can be eating a croissant in the Canal Saint-Martin Quartier? Look at it this way. Mayor Michael Nutter is the first mayor of our fair city to expand the possibilities of that office. After checking out his travel itinerary since 2008, folks are falling over themselves to run for mayor of Philadelphia. Ed Rendell was my personal favorite, but he thought that water ice and hoagies were the limits of the perks of office. If Nutter wants pasta with langostinos, he goes to Rome. If he wants a falafel, he visits Israel. Is it so outrageous that if he craves Chinese, he goes to China? Critics of the mayor are merely suffering from food-envy. What amazes me is how he keeps his weight down, and that is a key point in his favor. The man is disciplined. In his defense, the mayor points out that his visits all over the world bring new business to Philadelphia. Spoiled sports complain he can’t even bring a Neiman Marcus or Bloomingdale’s to Center City. Picky. Picky. Just wait until the fall when we get a Nordstrom’s Rack at 17th and Walnut. OK, so it’s a Rack selling discount out-of-style, overstocked items and not the real deal of an actual Nordstrom’s, but you probably can’t afford Nordstrom’s anyway. You can always go to King of Prussia for the high-end stores, which is a two hours adventurous SEPTA bus ride up and back. Meanwhile if the mayor’s trips are successful, Philadelphia should, any day now, blossom into an international city. I’m picturing a Parisian salon opening next to Modell’s on Chestnut Street and a French guy sticking his head outside the door telling all the customers, “The mayor sent me.” Some of you think Nutter could accomplish more if he stayed home, but I assure you with modern technology, His Honor is very much in touch with the pulse of Philadelphia. I have it from a good source that the mayor checks the hourly weather forecast for Philadelphia every moment he is away (note — he no longer checks Phillies’ box scores for obvious reasons). The mayor has brought an international approach to Philadelphia (and I don’t mean illegal immigrants). Nutter is also celebrated for coming up with the idea of Philly311. For a firsthand experience of exactly what I am referring to, just dial Philly311. No matter what your problem, the City employee answering

n s o u t h p h i l l y r e v i e w.c o m

the phone thinks you’re speaking a foreign language. After two minutes, you’ll believe he or she is also speaking a foreign language. Welcome to Philadelphia, the International City. You’ll forget why you called in the first place. The following story didn’t happen, but it could have: Caller: “I’m calling because my trash has not been picked up.” 311: “If you want to report a crash, call 911.” Caller: “No, I didn’t say ‘crash,’ I said, ‘trash.’” 311: “Trash? What about trash, sir?” Caller: “My trash has not been picked up.” 311: “Has your neighbor’s trash been picked up?” Caller: “I think my neighbor is away.” 311: “You think, but sir, are you sure?” Caller: “I’m only sure that my trash hasn’t been picked up.” 311: “When is your trash day?” Caller: “My trash day is today.” 311: “And sir, what is today?” Caller: “Today is the day that my trash was supposed to be picked up.” 311: “It is only 4 p.m. on Tuesday, sir, trash may be picked up until 7 p.m. tonight.” Caller: “Should I call back tonight if my trash isn’t picked up by 7?” 311: “You may, but our office will be closed.” After the trash is failed to be picked up by 7 that night, the caller gets back to Philly311 on Friday. He is told that a report will be filed with the Department of Sanitation and his trash will be picked up within two days. Unfortunately his trash is not picked up and the weekend intercedes. When he calls Philly311 on Monday, he is told that since his regular trash day is Tuesday, he should just wait and see whether his trash is picked up at that time. And as author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. once wrote — And so it goes. Rumor has it that in his travels he has come up with a new idea. He will require each operator at Philly311 to speak at least two languages. How do you say “sit tight” in Spanish? If you have relatives across the ocean, they have a better chance of seeing Nutter than we do. I’m glad the pope plans to visit Philadelphia. I’m hoping he brings Nutter back with him. I don’t think the chances are too good because leather is a great buy in the market in Florence this time of year. A good way to close the budget gap is either to defeat Tom Corbett for governor in November or for the mayor to turn in his frequent flyers miles to the School District. Some of you don’t realize our mayor served as president of the United Conference of Mayors from June 2012 to June ’13. Frankly, I was surprised that with his travel experiences, he wasn’t named ambassador to the United Nations. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

Before he became “Amazing,” the 2002 version of the web-slinging hero SpiderMan (Tobey Maguire) was using his newfound talents to battle the Green Goblin.

Marvelous five n By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

W

ith “Guardians of the Galaxy” blowing up at the box office, here are five more hot Marvel movies to remember.

X2: X-Men United (2003) After (somewhat clunkily) laying the groundwork with his first “X-Men” installment, director Bryan Singer was free to explore the diverse universe of everyone’s favorite mutant posse, folding in everything from “coming-out” stories to a blue-skinned friend (Nightcrawler) that matches an indigo foe (Mystique). This stunner is the “Empire Strikes Back” of Marvel flicks. Hulk (2003) Everyone loves to knock Ang Lee’s “Hulk,” for reasons this reviewer still can’t understand. Did the naysayers not see the brilliant ways in which Lee used comic cells as a means of scene transition? Did they not appreciate his explicit, evocative use of primary colors? Were they put off by the abundance of ... green? The mind boggles. “Hulk” is an unsung gem, folks. Spider-Man (2002) People love to sing the praises of Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2,” which is indeed a triumph of genre action, but let’s not forget the quaint, yet riveting, charm of the director’s original, which casts the perfectly picked Tobey Maguire as a hero thrillingly finding his wings (... err, webs). Ripe for adolescence metaphors, this origin story lets you feel the thrill of discovery and the whoosh of swinging from building to building.

Blade (1998) From the opening moment in which an underground dance club turns into a literal blood bath, with plasma spraying from the sprinklers to the tune of a now-classic techno jam, you know “Blade” is giving you something badass and bound to last. In the role he was born to play, Wesley Snipes embodies the rare black superhero as if he himself were a vamp.

The original “Blade” launched a trilogy of action roles for Wesley Snipes.

The Wolverine (2013) While seeing the “X-Men United” can be a thrill, it can also be a case of too many mutants in the kitchen (see: “X-Men: The Last Stand”). The triumph of last year’s “The Wolverine” is that it not only explores the Japan-based mythology of the title character (Hugh Jackman), but it isolates him and actually delves into his inner core, in a way the odious “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” utterly failed to accomplish. It also helps that the ageless Jackman is still fighting fit as this feral, self-healing icon. Here’s what people are saying about us: They fixed everything, they had open communication and the personnel were really nice. - Sarah R. on June 18, 2014 I arrived at Schafer’s needing a routine oil change, but I also needed my front driver side blinker repaired and asked them to look into why my check gas cap message was coming up. The oil change took about 20 minutes and then they began looking into the blinker. What I thought was just a bulb out was actually a fuse issue, so I’m glad I didn’t try to fix it myself. They were thorough in determining the exact issue and were able to fix the problem. Great cost, no BS and stuck to my time schedule. any people hate having to do something a second time, preferring to prosper on their initial attempts. Such a mindset can cause frustration in the kitchen, but not for Marina Villari, whose Biscotti need two trips to the oven to achieve perfection. The resident of the 1900 block of South 11th Street honors her Italian heritage through this recipe, which, because of the yield, will never leave one yearning for a personal treat or offering for guests. Anastasi Seafood n By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

O

n a brutally hot July day two years ago, I brewed some iced tea and settled in to watch Anthony Bourdain tour the Hudson River Valley. He sat on the banks of the Hudson River and enjoyed hard-shell crabs and beer with local men who set crab traps in the river. I never knew hard-shells thrive in the Hudson, but I instantly started craving them. I grew up on hard-shells beginning at the now-shuttered Abe’s Oyster House in Atlantic City. Years later, I dove into them at The Crab Claw on Maryland’s Eastern Shore where we sat outside at newspapercovered picnic tables and cracked away. I wonder why there are so few places in the city that offer this delicacy. Blue crab is so sweet and satisfying. Many people believe eating hard-shells is too much effort for too little reward. I am not one of them. I found my tasty reward at Anastasi Seafood in the Italian Market. I have not been to this retail shop/restaurant in years, but it has hard-shells, so off we went. There are tables outside for those who enjoy dining al fresco, but we took seats at the bar because every table was taken. One will not find a nicer staff anywhere. A glass of beer was in order, and since I was in the Italian Market, a pint of Peroni ($6) from Italy hit the spot. Edward sipped a Yard’s Pale Ale ($6), and our feast began. The culinary gods were looking after us: Anastasi serves cherrystone clams ($1.25) each. We devoured two dozen of these meaty, freshly shucked beauties,

nestled on a tray lined with small square ice cubes, which are among my favorite foods. Don’t forget to ask the server for oyster crackers and horseradish. Soup on a warm summer night is a fine appetite stimulant. A cup of white chowder ($4.50) was made with crab and shrimp. The texture was perfect; some homemade chowders can be too thick and gloppy. This version was prepared with tiny squares of carrot that made it a bit sweet to my taste. Hard-shell crabs (three for $15) can be ordered clean, dirty, with or without Old Bay seasoning. I like Old Bay, but I prefer a light hand. I decided to go classic: steamed crabs atop a garlic olive oil sauce. A pile of napkins and lobster crackers for easy crabmeat extraction were in order. The first taste of this delicate, sweet crustacean was downright satisfying. The crabs were steamed beautifully and not one bit overcooked. Whoever was in charge of them knows how to cook crab. It was simply summer on a plate in South Philly. A fried fish combination dinner, a favorite from childhood, is difficult to find on a restaurant menu. The Anastasi platter ($20) consisted of a large slice of fried Jersey flounder, shrimp, scallop, oyster and crab balls. Each piece of fish was free of grease and fried to a light golden brown. A sprinkling of salt and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice were required. Since tartar sauce and fried fish go so well, ask for it. Customers will get cocktail sauce, however. I found the tartar sauce a bit too Restaurant Review:

sweet. The french fries were crisp and hot, but the coleslaw was a bit bland and needed more mayonnaise. Summer is the season for fresh seafood. Anastasi is offering soft-shell crabs that have become very expensive in markets within the past few years. It also has specials such as halibut and a well-planned menu for all seafood lovers. I know the craving for lobster will arrive soon. I will be off to Anastasi to enjoy. Three-and-a-half tips of the toque to (continued from page 25) = Very Good = Extraordinary

Sbraga’s Lobster Roll

F

or fans of the hit Bravo reality show “Top Chef,” Kevin Sbraga is a very familiar name, as he was the Season 7 winner. However, the culinary

career ingredients were blending in his mind long before the television appearances. “My parents were bakers and I grew up in the bakery,” the Johnson & Wales, Miami graduate said. “I have had a passion for food ever since I was a child. But it was really a dinner at Le BecFin for my 17th birthday that really changed the game for me.” Before earning his name on the South Broad Street marque, Sbraga took jobs in Atlanta and Philly to gain experience. In 2008, he did some consulting work for Jose Garces to test recipes for the chefproprietor’s “Latin Evolution” cookbook, which led to earning the full-time title of culinary director of Garces Restaurant Group. Two years later, he accepted the opportunity to be part of the “Top Chef” competition, which paved the way for lighting up his name along South Broad Street in October ’11.

scene, and I would love to be a part of it,” Sbraga said. “Not to mention, my mommom grew up in South Philly.”

The South Jersey native, who was named a ’13 Philadelphia Rising Star Community Chef, knew Philly is where he wanted to his solo culinary career. “This is home to me,” Sbraga said. “I couldn’t think of a place I’d rather open a restaurant.” The Lobster Roll recipe he is sharing was inspired by a Fourth of July trip to Kennebunk, Maine last year. “I knew I wanted to do a lobster roll for Sbraga. I decided to add tabasco sauce to it for a little heat and to bring out the other flavors in the recipe. Once I did that, it was an instant smash,” he said. Besides his eponymous spot, he is the man behind University Citybased The Fat Ham. When asked about possibly heading south of South Street, the restaurateur was open to the idea. “I totally would consider expanding to South Philly. I think South Philly has a great dining

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY DAD

JULY 15, 2004

DaD, Ten years have passed with you not around and it feels as though it happened yesterday. I still feel the way I did the day you died, the ache is still in my heart and never goes a way. a million times I’ve missed you , a million times I’ve cried, If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. The things I feel most deeply are the hardest things to say. Dad, I have loveed you and will always love you in a very special way. I often sit and think of you and think of how you died. To think I couldn’t say good-bye before you closed your eyes. No one can know my loneliness and no one can see me weeping, all my tears from my aching heart while others are sleeping. If I had one lifetime wish, a dream that could come true,

We love you, Sam, and miss you. Mommy, Franky, Gram, the Prettymans, the Bannings, the Yacovellis, the Nelsons, the Holdimans, the Gebos and the rest of our rag-tag gang.

I’d pray to God with all my heart for yesterday and you. Forever missed and always in my heart, “Loved and missed so-so much”, Love you always, because I will always be

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

Gloria Murphy 05.17.1930

08.10.2013

Rosemarie Palange 12/27/1945 - 8/12/2013

In Memory of our friend Rosemarie

It is just one year this August 10th since you left us on your journey to heaven. Your are sorely missed by your husband Leonard, brothers; Vincent and George Gallo, also missed by numerous nieces and nephews from both the Gallo and Murphy families. Many neighbors who knew Gloria in South Philadelphia and in North Wildwood have asked to be remembered to her. My fervent desire is to be lucky enough to join you in heaven for eternity,

One year ago today we went to a funeral, and then we went home. We visited with friends, we remembered the memories, we laughed and we cried. Those real laughs that bring real tears we all lost that day. Then we went home, back to our homes, back to our own life, back to whatever was left to make our lives complete. And many days afterwards that same day came back, everyone knows those kind of days the ones when your mind is flooded with reminders that you are no longer with us. Days that bring back to life the day we laughed and cried. We get together and it begins all over again.

Partial to being martial A Point Breeze teen’s commitment to karate yielded a world championship. n By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

Samantha Convento hopes to add many more trophies to her name and aspires to make winners out of similarly committed youths. Photo Provided by Samantha Convento

16 entrants executed their moves in one ring, her interior steadiness conquered the exterior craziness, and she registered the highest marks in each discipline. Ecstatic yet immediately cognizant of her overall progression, the next step of which will be acquiring second-degree black belt status, she has not rested on her laurels and has returned to Shin Karate with as much enthusiasm as a beginner. “It’s insane to think about how far I’ve come,” Convento said. “I’m having the time of my life.” The confidenT force commenced her karate crusade through uncle Sal Convento and relied on the influence of her brother, also Sal Convento, to develop diligence. “I was nervous in the beginning,” she said of what she and her sibling, a ’12

graduate of Prep Charter High School, 1928 Point Breeze Ave., where she will soon start her senior year, experienced. “I wondered why people were yelling out of nowhere. I mean, I’m Filipino, and people in my culture can be overly vocal, but that’s not something I try to be. However, this is the only place where I can be loud and not get in trouble.” Quickly countering her apprehension, Convento settled into her studies and learned of her natural ability at 13 when completing her first board break. Looking for emotional, physical and spiritual challenges, she began to compile a list of goals, deeming persistence as the key to attaining them and maximizing their rewards. “I started off wishing to be a red belt,” Convento commented of her preliminary

at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php pursuit, which she fulfilled within a year and a half. “I wanted, and actually still want, to see what the best of me can do.” Most athletes have ample occasions to test their skills before massive events, but not the competent kicker, whose first tournament was the ’10 World Championships, at which she scored a first-place forms commendation. She earned similar distinction in sparring as a blue belt two years later and set herself to donning a different hue soon after that triumph. “I wanted to beat the odds and become more mentally and physically stronger,” Convento, who in November will mark her one-year anniversary as a black belt, said. “I always desire more and by no means am I content with what I’ve done.” Just as with her pride in competing for Shin Karate and continuing her family’s martial arts timeline, the young lady has yearned to honor her own understanding of achievement, which her black belt preparation, including topping the threemile running prescription by at least a half mile upon her full immersion into the task, helped to hone. Having realized the camaraderie and commitment that can come from karate, she recommends her obsession to anybody looking not only for friendship but also improved self-esteem and resolve. “I recall having a big debate with myself about continuing with karate,” Convento said. “Then I determined that no matter what I’m going through, karate would melt the problems away; it would help me to leave everything behind.” Taking everything in stride, she has engrossed herself in Shin Karate’s mission by volunteering and instructing pupils whom she hopes will be champions, too, winning the praise of Castelli, who tabbed her “a great student and mentor.” Those learners could one day claim they received guidance from a master, as Convento, who would like to attend the United States Naval Academy, has stated she would love that title eventually, which would assist her in feeling she has surpassed her brother, whom she touts as being a tad better. “I used to say maybe one day I’ll reach my goals,” Convento said. “I’ve stopped saying that, though. Now I say some day soon.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.

ailing from a loving family, Samantha Convento has developed an admirable value system that includes respect for elders. The 17-year-old karate practitioner relaxed that regard July 18, as she achieved three first-place finishes and captured the Adult Female Dan Grand World Championship in North Carolina. “I love pushing myself to be better, so to come through on such a big stage proves that I’m on the way,” the resident of the 1600 block of Moore Street said Friday from Castelli’s Shin Karate, 709 W. Oregon Ave., her four-year martial arts haunt. “There’s still a long way to go, though.” The Point Breeze dweller ventured to the Tar Heel State as a Region 8 World Tang Soo Do Association competitor looking to build on 2010 and ’12 success at the same tournament. Unlike the other pageants, Convento entered as an adult registrant, with possible encounters against women up to twice her age having intensified her preparation. “I stayed late all the time,” the firstdegree black belt holder said of sessions at her Marconi East training site, which Louis Castelli, of the 2600 block of South Warnock Street, owns. “I knew, just like any other time, that I had to be stronger than my strongest excuse.” Raring to represent the location and her clan, she also anticipated annihilating any self-doubts and fondly recalled her mindset upon waking on what would become an unforgettable day. “I thought, ‘Wow, this is it,’” the ebullient teenager said. “I told myself that I had to do it. I had to go out and beat some people.” Once at the Greensboro Sports Complex, Convento competed in forms, sparring and weapons, and though at one point she found the setting “nerve-racking” as
