The solemnity of Kennedy Residents reflect on the 50th anniversary of JFK’s death in Dallas and its lasting effects. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

uring his Jan. 20, 1961 inauguration as the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy encouraged civic engagement by declaring “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Thirty-four months later, the 46-year-old commander in chief had his quest to give personal validation of that instruction cut short when, according to the Warren Commission, Lee Harvey Oswald

assassinated him in Dallas. With tomorrow marking the 50th anniversary of his slaying, millions are reliving their grief while also entertaining what-might-have-been scenarios and addressing what the loss has meant to America’s identity. “There was a silence all over,” Anthony Visco, then a sophomore at Father Judge High School, said of his neighborhood after residents had learned of the Democrat’s death in the Texas capital. “Nobody really knew how to process anything immediately, but I came to know we would never be the same after that.” The resident of Broad and Christian streets experienced much novelty during the brief presidency, as the Kennedy campaign for the Oval Office in ’60 had given him his initial exposure to anti-Catholicism owing to the then-Massachusetts See KENNEDY page 10 >>

Word on the Street

A recent Gallop poll concluded that John F. Kennedy is the best president since 1953. Do you agree/disagree?

“I disagree. He was only in office for a few short years and therefore did not have enough time to put his policies into effect. Bill Towey, Second and Christian streets

“I disagree. I think Ronald Reagan was the best president. I like how he brought his cowboy mentality into the White House. Karen Winland, American and South streets

Universal perspective To the Editor: I read with great interest the letter by Rosary Casiello (“State of the Republic, Nov. 14). As a Medicare member and the widow of a wounded Korean War veteran, I think I also have a right to comment on the state of health care in this republic that my husband defended. I am trying to understand Ms. Casiello’s fears of a “single-payer health plan. Veterans may apply for a single-payer plan. And of course, Medicare and Medicaid are already single-payer plans. I can’t speak for others, but I am perfectly happy with my Medicare plan, especially now that I no longer have to fear reaching a “donut hole in my prescription plan, thanks to the Affordable Care Act. Yes, a single-payer plan can be called (shudder) “socialized medicine, but I prefer the term “universal health care. That means that through a system of universal taxa-

tion (like our Medicare and Social Security taxes), the government provides health insurance to all its citizens. My friend Ruth, an American citizen who lives in Canada and is close to 90, can go to any doctor, get any kind of test and has had serious surgery, at no extra cost, by presenting a single card. What a single-payer plan removes from the equation is the profit motive. Insurance companies cannot deny treatment because it is too expensive and would cut into their profits. I am not here to defend everything President Obama has said or done. No president is perfect. But no other president has succeeded in solving the problem of health care for everyone, which so many seem determined to abort. We are not at the single-payer option yet, and the struggles of getting the ACA started are indeed a mess, but we should not fear eventual

universal health care, which every other civilized country in the world has had for decades. Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

Fitting tribute To the Editor: (Bill Chenevert’s) article (“Base for celebration, Nov. 14) was very informative, and I know that [he] did [his] homework about the Marines. Additionally, [he] accurately reported the words of the Marines interviewed. It is refreshing to know a reporter who is a good writer, and one who reports what he researches without embellishing the story sensationally. I would be glad and honored to meet you again at Cookie’s Tavern next year. Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful, the Marine Corps motto). Robert W. Baird Newark, Del. Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

“I agree. I think he had a better strategy and game plan for our country. I am not a big fan of Obama. I feel like he let us down as a nation. Reginald Jones, Fourth and South streets

“Terrific piece on bullying (Easy as ABC and 123, Nov. 14) and so important that successful members of the community come in and talk to kids to carry this message. Children need role models and they need to hear from their voice that each person can make a difference. It starts with one person! As a teacher, bullying is seen every day, but then again there is bullying even at the adult level in schools. Mary via southphillyreview.com

“I won’t let you define my views on the Affordable Care Act for me (“State of the Republic, Nov. 14). I favored expanding Medicare for all or at least the choice of a public option to compete with the private insurance companies. ACA is lousy but it is better than what we have today, 30 million uninsured Americans and rising costs. What’s your plan, other than to throw around labels that should have been buried in the McCarthy era? You are free to criticize the President (have found plenty to criticize myself, including the terrible website mess), but your disrespect is rude and downright unpatriotic. Tom Cardella via southphillyreview.com

“History has shown he has done a lot of great things for our country. He was loved by the people and brought about a togetherness, and today we are more divided. Rachel Hendrickson, Fourth and South streets

GINKO GOODNESS: Bright yellow Ginko trees are holding on to their vivid hue late into November on Moyamensing Avenue between 15th and 18th Streets. For all but two months of the year, these trees provide great city foliage and are an ideal source of shade. But once the seeds fall, you’ll think you’re smelling rotten food or catching a whiff of sewage. SPR

“I grew up in South Philly from age 5 (“Top 10 expressions and sayings heard too often in South Philly, web exclusive). How one pronounces words is a matter of choice. You either choose to speak like those around you or develop the accent of the wider region or imitating television. All of this is universal. There’s a youtube video of Patrick Stewart talking about his hometown in England and that regional accent. Snobby twits who move into South Philly and make fun of the “stupid locals is a big pet peeve of mine even though I move[d] away when I was 29. When I go back to my old neighborhood and am reimmersed in the accent, there’s something very comforting about it. rechill via southphillyreview.com

Five years later Authorities arraigned a man in connection with the 2008 murder of an aspiring educator. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

P

olice announced Tuesday they have charged 35-year-old Marcellus Jones, of North Philly, with the June 15, 2008 murder of Beau Zabel on the 800 block of Ellsworth Street. An arrest affidavit released the same day noted Jones had already been serving a life sentence for killing accomplice Tyrek Taylor the same year, police said. Having engaged in interviews with relatives and acquaintances, the Homicide Special Investigation Unit concluded Jones had participated in the killing of Zabel, a 23-year-old Minnesota native who lived a block away from the crime scene, with authorities saying the incident occurred over an iPod. Zabel had moved to South Philadelphia for inclusion in the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows program.

Fighting words A spat left a Garden State resident dead and another arrested in Queen Village Sunday. Having learned a fight had begun inside the Mixed Plate, 216 South St., authorities responded to a call of multiple gunshots on the 100 block of South Street at 1:27 a.m., Officer Christine O’Brien of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. They observed a man firing a weapon in the direction before he fled the area, with his eventual capture by bicycle police on Front and Bainbridge streets. As a result of the alleged shots from Willingboro, N.J., resident Lance Smith, 24, multiple bullets struck 21-year-old Demetry Presley of Sicklerville, N.J., in the head and chest, with officials transporting him to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he died at 7:35 p.m, O’Brien said. Authorities, who recovered the firearm supposedly used in the shooting, charged Smith with murder, aggravated and simple assault and related offenses. He awaits a Dec. 4 preliminary hearing.

Love is a battlefield Matters of the heart led to an altercation in Marconi Friday. Arriving on 20th Street and Oregon Avenue at 12:36 a.m. Sunday, authorities found the complainant, a SEPTA employee, with multiple deep cuts to her left arm, chest and eye, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The fe-

male, whose ex-boyfriend also works for the transportation provider, told them she came to their employer’s depot at 20th and Johnston streets on her day off and approached her former lover’s new girlfriend, who was sitting in his car. Witnesses observed the complainant banging on the car window to cause the other female to leave the vehicle, Tolliver said. The male eventually arrived at his automobile, causing the complainant to use her minivan to travel northbound along 20th Street, stopping just north of Oregon Avenue. The other woman, Monique Morris, 41, allegedly pulled her beau’s ride up directly behind the complainant, with the latter approaching her one-time partner and punching him in the face. Morris reportedly exited the car to retaliate, with the two engaging in punching and hair pulling, Tolliver said. Authorities transported the complainant to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for the aforementioned injuries, with information on what was used to cut her unavailable, and they took Morris, who had a cut on her right hand, to Methodist Hospital, later charging the Upper Darby resident with possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person and aggravated and simple assault.

Sticks and stones A bicyclist helped to track down one of his supposed attackers in Newbold last week. Riding along the 1800 block of Ellsworth Street at 8:25 p.m. Nov. 13, the man observed a teenager throw a rock at him, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said, with another youth, whom he saw hiding behind a truck, allegedly standing up and striking him in the face with a stick, which he later described as a tree branch that broke upon impact. Retaining his balance, he chased after the males after they began to hurl obscenities at him. He said the second figure ran to a residence on the 1900 block of Ellsworth Street, while the first bolted toward 19th and Manton streets. Officers located the reported stick swinger in the alley of the 1900 block of Annin Street, with the complainant identifying him as his aggressor, Tolliver said. They charged the 15-year-old with possession of an instrument of crime, criminal conspiracy, aggravated and simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. The other teenager, whom he described as

Four for fighting

St., at 12:15 a.m., the worker attempted to help a customer with a coffee machine when an unknown man entered the establishment and advanced to the area behind the cash register, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. After yelling for the figure to move away from that spot and remain in the store while he contacted authorities, he became engaged in a tussle with the interloper as he tried to escape, with both falling tumbling toward the rear of the store. Another male and two women entered soon after and inflicted numerous punches before the quartet left and fled in a burgundy four-door vehicle, Tolliver said. The employee suffered an injury to his left eye but reported nothing taken. He described the first male as black; 6 foot; dark complected; having a medium build and possible dreadlocks and wearing a red jacket. He had no detailed description of the others. The owner of a West Passyunk establishment ended up bound and robbed Monday afternoon. The complainant noted she was working inside Grace Grocery Story, 2049 S. 19th St., at 12:14 p.m. when an unknown female came in and asked for help with an item after having dallied for a few minutes. Having placed a selection on the counter, the patron walked around the site a second time, later pulling out a large knife and demanding money after having approached the cash register area, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The proprietor gave the aggressor approximately $100, but she demanded more and resorted to tying the owner’s hands with duct tape before grabbing numerous cigarette cartons. She then punched the complainant in the head and face multiple times, added duct tape to her mouth, pilfered her cell phone and attempted to smash it before leaving the store northbound along 19th Street, Tolliver said. Once a customer entered, the owner, who sustained minor injuries, was able to call authorities, who are looking for a black female, ages 25 to 30, 5-foot-2, 225 pounds; and wearing a black winter hat, a navy blue sweatshirt, loose blue jeans and sneakers. Authorities are also seeking the suspect for a Tuesday morning robbery at Dollar Tree, 2437 S. 23rd St. At 8:17 am, she entered the establishment and shortly afterward demanded money from an employee, using a large knife to intimidate the worker. After receiving an undetermined amount of cash, she fled the store, heading south on 23rd Street. Holiday harvest for health Wharton freshmen and BEBASHI teamed up for well-being at a Grays Ferry site. ■ By Bill Chenevert R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

t the corner of the 2600 block of Morris Street Saturday, the Vare Recreation Center hosted an afternoon of free Thanksgiving food, vaccinations, health screens including rapid Hep C and HIV tests, u shots and entertainment, all made possible by a collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School’s Management 100 class and the local organization, BEBASHI. Teams formed in the class choose a nonprot to work with and create an event or raise money and awareness for the group. BEBASHI, which stands for Blacks Educating Blacks About Sexual Health Issues, paid a visit to Wharton’s MGMT 100 class to pitch their missions and goals earlier this fall. “Two of our biggest thrusts are hunger relief and sexual health,” Gary Bell, BEBASHI’s executive director, said, with two goals wrapped into the umbrella of sexual health. Breast health, via cancer awareness and mammogram assistance, and HIV prevention and protection were two of the three primary aims addressed downstairs in the gymnasium, while assembly line dinner was served upstairs. “We wanted to get people tested and wanted to feed people,” Bell said. “Especially around the holidays, food is a good chance to get people together to eat but at the same time to get some health screens.” Boston Canary, a North Philly resident who quit his job as a store leader with Target to join BEBASHI’s staff as a prevention specialist, was administering HIV tests. “I quit because this is my passion,” the he said. Canary tested about 20 volunteers and stressed the value of HIV education. “There are four ways to get HIV, and touching and hugging is not how you can get it,” Canary explained, sharing one of the biggest misconceptions about the virus. “The four ways are blood [and IV drug use], semen, breast milk and vaginal secretions.” Bell is no stranger to the idea that both sexually active teens and adults often don’t know they’re at risk. “It comes down, quite often, to the perception of risk,” Bell posited. “If you know very little about HIV because you don’t take the time to learn about it, and you know what you’ve heard and maybe you’ve heard it’s a gay white disease or something that drug users get, if I’m none

of the above, am I really at risk?” Absolutely. Some facts from table tents about HIV were presented in the dining hall upstairs: “1.1 million Americans are infected with HIV,” “Every 9.5 minutes, one person in the US is infected with HIV,” “50,000 Americans are diagnosed with HIV every year,” and “African Americans account for 46 percent of the current HIV cases.” LAUREN TANKERSLY, BEBASHI’S program assistant, was checking in on one of the tables in the gymnasium that was dispensing condoms, courting voter registration and informing visitors of their patient

The University of Pennsylvania’s dental school had already left after giving out all of its tooth brushes, but Walgreens was on hand to provide free flu shots, and a private nurse helped patients to test their blood pressure and get their height and weight measured. One of BEBASHI’s programs, Bosom Buddies, helps women to their mammogram appointment, whether it’s their first or they’re just nervous. Giavoni Gethers, a resident of Southwest Philly and a workstudy volunteer, explained: “If she’s afraid LEGO Club 2 p.m. Nov. 23; Storytime and Music for Toddlers 10 a.m. and Stories and Crafts 1:30 p.m. Nov. 26; Wednesday Afternoon Storytime Break 2 p.m. Nov 27. 2437 S. or nervous, we go with that person through the whole journey.” BEBASHI provided quick facts about breast cancer prevention that state that one in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer, that risk elevates with age and inheritance and that despite doctors recommending breast exams once a month, only 53 percent of women 40 and older report having a mammogram within the last year. Vince Meo was on hand as a Walgreens representative to administer flu shots. The resident of the 2500 block of South Darien Street, raised at Ninth and Shunk streets, said the flow of immunization seekers was “steady.” Last year was a bad year and with flu season coming on strong, avoiding influenza helps families stay healthy. “It’s a really good preventative effort and you never know when it’s coming,” Meo said. Influenza is contagious and spreads every winter, typically between the months of October and May. It can be spread through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Symptoms come on quickly (fever, sore throat, aches and fatigue, cough, headache, and runny/ stuffy noses) and last several days. Upstairs, The Philly Reggae Band, a fivepiece force, hailing from all over Philadelphia and New Jersey, soundtracked platebuilding efforts consisting of turkey, string beans, macaroni and cheese, rice and gravy, rolls and Bundt cake. “We ranked BEBASHI as number one, and we ended up getting them,” 18-yearold Amanda Martinez, one of the MGMT 100 students, explained. The Maryland native’s eyes were opened by the experience. The level of need in Grays Ferry is, presumably, significantly greater than her native Chesapeake state’s Montgomery County. BEBASHI’s Bell noted the worth in targeting this section of Philadelphia. “This area is one we’ve kind of targeted because it is underserved,” he explained. “With programs like ours, we’re hoping to find one or two sites here, to find a community partner, like a substance abuse treatment center or maybe a church, so we can have a more consistent presence here.” Martinez learned perhaps as much as some locals discerned about their health on Saturday afternoon. “It’s a little bit of a wake-up call,” she said. continued from page 1 senator’s faith and the gruesome occasion resulted in the country’s first presidential casualty since William McKinley’s death in ’01. With so many broadcasts detailing the Kennedy motorcade’s fateful trek to Dealey Plaza, Visco and others had copious questions and believed answers would come through the arrest of Oswald. “And then he ended up gunned down,” the Bella Vista dweller said of his demise two days later at the hands of Jack Ruby, an event he viewed on live television. “Oswald’s passing kick-started a conspiracy theory binge I don’t think we’ll ever escape.” Visco feels Lyndon Johnson, Kennedy’s vice president who became the nation’s next leader two hours after the act of violence and who established the aforementioned commission that determined in ’64 that Oswald had acted alone, a finding that he refutes, might have been involved in a plot to eliminate Kennedy. As many citizens have used recent polls to claim a layered scheme existed, one may never know who orchestrated the murder or what motivated the aggression. No matter if such knowledge surfaces, Visco will never shake a common theme among those for whom Nov. 22, ’63

remains a key historical date. “We parted with our president and our innocence the same day,” the artist, who has honored Kennedy in his work, said. “The assassination happened without warning and from within. It had a very profound effect on so many people, with the need to ask ourselves what sort of decisions we should be making with our lives. To say the least, it was a powerful day.” HAVING DEFEATED RICHARD M. Nixon in ’60, Kennedy entered the White House the following winter as a greatly revered pursuer of social change. That advocacy for progressive politics yielded many enemies, too, with many presumed foes, including Cuban and Soviet officials, the CIA and the Mafia, factoring into conspiracy theories on who made him the fourth president to die by an assassin’s bullet, joining Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield and McKinley. Owing to the extremely sensitive nature of the execution, Johnson, who had taken the oath of office aboard Air Force One with Kennedy’s widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, by his side, sought to quell suspicion a week later by tabbing Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Earl Warren to head an investigation. In ’78, though, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations offered its contention the assassination was

n November 22, 1963, I was in rst grade at St. Gabriel’s Parochial School, 2917 Dickinson St., being taught by the Sisters of Immaculate Heart of Mary. What started out as a typical day that would have probably faded out of recollection by nightfall actually turned into a moment that would stay with me forever. It was a bright sunny Friday afternoon. The temperature was very pleasant. My classmates and I were anxious to get

through the day so we could play football and watch Saturday morning TV cartoons. Thanksgiving was a week away. Then suddenly everything changed. I remember hearing anxious voices and people moving around in the hallway because the doors to our classroom were open. Sister Hugh Maureen, who taught my class, was called out of room 103 to speak with other teachers. I heard crying. Sister came back into our classroom and informed us that President Kennedy, who

probably a conspiratorial event. “I’m sticking with the commission,” Ron Tempesta, of the 2600 block of South Warnock Street, said. “Nothing has convinced me otherwise. There was likely more than one shooter, but Oswald’s the guy.” Then 9 years old and a student at Epiphany of Our Lord School, now Our Lady of Hope Regional Catholic School, 1248 Jackson St., the Lower Moyamensing denizen had become “very used to Kennedy” through television appearances, especially those that interrupted his cartoons, with the leader’s Roman Catholicism a vital component of his neighborhood’s affinity for the president. Reflecting back on the autumn afternoon when Kennedy’s earthly life ended, Tempesta recalls heavy emotions marking most interactions over the next few days. “There had been a sense of danger anyway, with nuns telling us to beware of Communism,” he said of a chief piece of the frequent hostility between American and Soviet culture. “That day, though, wow, I felt so bad for him and for us.” Like Visco, Tempesta saw Oswald’s assassination and similarly acknowledged the complexity of the entire ordeal might never breed more responses to pressing questions. Despite there being much bewilderment surrounding the matter, he knows it counts as one of his lifetime’s two most was revered in our neighborhood and in our school because he was the first [RoRoman] Catholic President had been “hurt” rt” and “injured” by a “bad man.” In the eyes of first graders, if our teachhers were upset, you could just imagine the he fear that we were experiencing. I rememmber looking around and seeing that everyyone in my class was scared and confused. d. We were even afraid to walk home. Then Mother Superior Sister Agness Bernard came on the school wide PA system and said we should say a prayer for the President. Every classroom began praying the rosary for President Kennedy. Things began to calm down. The confusion and upset feelings began to subside with our prayers. After that, I knew somehow everything would turnout alright. Besides having immense historical implications that changed the world, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated also taught a young boy sitting in a first-grade classroom of a South Philadelphia Catholic School, a valuable lesson about the power of prayer and how it could be used constructively and effectively to help get you through a crisis. May JFK rest in peace. SPR Basil L. Merenda is an Attorney and served as secretary of the commonwealth in Gov. Ed Rendell’s administration. obvious examples of irrefutably powerful and educational occasions, the other being 911. The former solidified the loss of innocence he had already suspected, with the latter affirming the constant struggle between rectitude and hate. “That’s what every act of violence in this world does to us,” Maureen Fratantoni, of the 1900 block of South 11th Street, said of consequences of Kennedy’s death. “It chips at the very core of us.” She registers the assassination as all she can recall while a 3-year-old. Learning of the shooting when among relatives, Fratantoni observed gloom come over her kin and sensed evil had conquered the day. “In the eyes of a child, I knew that something really bad had happened and that the world would never be the same,” she said. Visco stressed people should avoid trivializing the death and that regardless of political or social stances, all should see that day a half-century ago as a call for comprehension. “We’ll only ever know so much or be told so much,” he said. “That day, though, exposed our vulnerability. I hope we’ll fix that soon.” SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

A watershed moment A Passyunk Square documentarian is garnering great feedback for his latest environmentally-conscious piece. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

devotee of authentic, craft-infused storytelling, Ben Kalina last year felt his next project would meditatively and poetically look at barrier islands and the contention-causing discussion of beach replenishment along the New Jersey Shore. Shortly before its supposed conclusion, though, Hurricane Sandy devastated huge portions of the country, with the East Coast bearing the brunt. With sea level rise going from a hinted-at to overt issue, the resident of the 1200 block of Dickinson Street adjusted the scope of “Shored Up,” his spring-released, fall-momentum-gaining brainchild that reflects his enthusiasm for environmental matters. “I believe it would have been a good and relevant film, but I think it lacked intensity,” the documentary’s 36-year-old director and producer said of the initial idea. “In many ways, the work was always about Sandy and the need to look at the dynamics of nature, namely how we should build with it and not impose our will on it.” Having become acquainted with The Garden State during the first phase of filming, the Passyunk Square dweller returned last October to capture materials for his suddenly altered investigation into

humanity’s complex relationship with aquatic affairs. With Sandy, the largest recorded Atlantic hurricane and the nation’s second-costliest tropical cyclone, exposing vulnerabilities in preparedness, Kalina contends no matter the rare quality of the storm, it still must give everyone pause and encourage talks on all elements regarding the climate and other pressing topics. “States are having various talks on what to do to limit climate change and on how feasible certain practices, including beach replenishment, will prove in helping us to understand the larger picture of the evolving earth,” Kalina, whose travels have taken him to places such as North Carolina, another “Shored Up”-examined location, said. “There’s so much to take in and understand, and with regards to sea level rise, it’s becoming increasingly obvious we have to address what and where we’re putting stuff. At what point, if ever, will logic return to the equation?” Having begun to tackle that inquiry earnestly four years ago, Kalina meshed his musings over the winter, with April’s Filmfest DC and May’s New Jerseybased Montclair Film Festival giving audiences evocative images and insights into the precarious state of resources and

the demand to understand one’s contribution to or means to combat climate change. Believing a three-foot sea level rise could occur by the year 2100, which would far outdo the 20th century’s 15inch increase, Kalina, whose publicity campaign for “Shored Up” includes today’s Pennsylvania Convention Center screening, knows he has created an examination of a dense set of subjects but also is cognizant that his overall quest contains much simplicity. “Telling a good story is a tried-and-true aspect of making documentaries,” he said. “We’re all characters in this tale because whether we’re informed or not, change is coming.” KALINA, WHOSE HANDIWORK received a national broadcast on DIRECTV Oct. 24 and will soon be available via iTunes and Netflix, has found himself immersed in such discourse for most of his life. With his family’s overseeing a Vermont ski resort, he learned early on about global warming’s potential for engineering widespread and environmental misfortune. Also finding himself drawn to movies, he experienced an epiphany at age 15 when watching the 1992 piece “Incident at Oglala.” “Many documentaries often lack a nar-

rative arc, and this was the farthest thing from a dry documentary,” Kalina said of the look at the ’75 murder of two FBI agents in South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. “I loved the cinematography usage and came to feel it would, in the plainest terms possible, be fun to make similarly powerful documentaries.” As an American culture major at New York’s Vassar College, he pursued NativeAmerican studies, English, history and filmmaking, the last component helping him to land a post-collegiate position providing video production instruction to children in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Gaining more verve for covering core concerns, he soon aligned with the Empire State-based Niijii Films, a partnership that has yielded associate producer duties for 2006’s “Two Square Miles,” which deals with Hudson, N.Y. residents’ reactions to a proposed cement plant, and ’09’s award-winning “A Sea Change,” which addresses ocean acidification. “They were extremely wonderful chances to take on pressing matters,” Kalina, whose work on the latter coincided with his enrollment in Temple University’s Film and Media Arts Masters program, said. “I wanted to dive in heavily and be involved with similar projects.”

You’d go a long way to find the best cancer care. But it’s nicer when you don’t have to. Jefferson’s Methodist Hospital in South Philadelphia offers a rare combination: the renowned cancer specialists of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson – backed by leading-edge technology and clinical trial options – with a close-to-home feel that allows cancer patients to remain in their comfort zone. It’s hard to match the quality of the cancer specialists who have helped to make Jefferson a National Cancer Institute-designated center. But when those doctors are located right in your neighborhood, that’s even more exceptional.

For Great Cancer Care, There’s No Place Like Home.

Having done so with “Shored Up,” the auteur is plotting his next synapse-firing work, which will analyze geoengineering, the large-scale effort to reduce global warming he says many have deemed the ultimate way of trying to play God. Calling Passyunk Square home since ’08 following a three-year stint in Queen Village, he runs Mangrove Media from his abode, producing videos for environmental organizations, nonprofits and schools. “That further embodies my philosophy on producing engaging material that honors my commitment to authenticity,” Kalina, who has two children with Corinne Militello, his wife of eight years, said. Reflecting on “Shored Up” and its reaching the masses, the director hopes people become more curious about the larger context of environmental decisions and press authorities for more answers. “It’s important to get a handle on these issues,” Kalina said. “It shouldn’t take calamitous events like Sandy to yield action.” SPR

he found out that gay men preferred his wife to him. You think it was because Sonny became a Republican congressman? I was living what I thought was a happy heterosexual life. But as I look back, there were warning signs. I wrote a column in support of fair housing laws for gays. As a result, I received a phone call from the leading crusader for gay rights in the city at the time, Mark Segal. Mark congratulated me on the column and told me that I had an invitation to dinner anytime I so chose. He likely doesn’t remember the occurrence, but the fact that I do remember that incident all these years later may mean something, although I’m not sure exactly what. As my life winds down, I continue to search for the true sexual me. Would I prefer having dinner with Neil Patrick Harris to Roseanne Barr? Yes, I guess I would. Do I like the color pink? I do have a pink linen sport shirt that I love, but I also like flannels (not a gay male disqualifier, but close). On the whole, I do find my gay male friends wittier and much better company than some of my straight ones, but I worry that I am stereotyping. On the other side of the ledger, I have never been able to shake my fondness (my wife would call it an obsession) with female breasts. And then there is the reality that I also find my gay female friends wittier and better company than some of my straight friends. One of them claims that I am a lesbian trapped in a male body. Now that’s an interesting concept. In one sense, my life would be easier if I were a lesbian. I might have been able to go “dutch” when I dated. Then again, I’m not sure where my talent for skipping comes in. I do admit to being attracted to Jodie Foster (most famously Clarice in “The Silence Of The Lambs”), who happens to be a lesbian. Was I disappointed when Jodie came out of the closet? Not really. I still adore her, hence the possibility of my lesbian interests. Some of my lesbian friends tell me this also would explain why I like football, K.D. Lang and dogs so much. Then there’s my thing for flannel. I am a happy straight male, gay male, lesbian in male clothing right this minute. Conservative state Sen. Pat Toomey has come out in support of an end to gay discrimination in the workplace. This proposed legislation is called ENDA. I also am thrilled gay marriage is becoming so much the norm that it has become trendy even in South Jersey. Civil unions seem nothing more than the equivalent of separate but equal, a practice reminiscent of the segregated Old South. I am out of the “closette” and never going back in. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) must again prove their cunning after having won a fierce competition.

Fired up ■ By R. Kurt Osenlund Movie Reviewer

t’s taken until the end of November, but viewers finally get the action movie of the year in “Catching Fire,” the second installment of “The Hunger Games” saga, based on Suzanne Collins’ novels. Not only is this epic sequel better than its 2012 predecessor, it’s also better than its source, book two of Collins’ series. In print, “Catching Fire” saw the breathless pacing of “The Hunger Games” start to wane, but on screen, it picks up incredibly, as there’s never a dull moment under the direction of Francis Lawrence, who took the reins from the last film’s helmer, Gary Ross. It’s safe to assume that this dread-laden follow-up benefited greatly from both a decreased release rush and an increased budget, as everything from the lavish costumes to the upper-crust Panem Capitol are suddenly richly realized. All the while, the film’s emotion hinges on the breakdown of that fabulized veneer, which exists to distract oppressed citizens from the horror of their children being sent to die for sport. Thanks to the defiant act that made both of them winners last time ‘round, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) are on President Snow’s (Donald Sutherland) naughty list, as their bravery has galvanized an uprising. Ripple effects are seen pulsating through every character, including Effie (Elizabeth Banks), the Capitol’s public relations puppet, and Johanna (Jena Malone), a spitfire and former Hunger Games victor who’s none too thrilled that Snow has organized another bloodbath, pinning every previous winner, young and old, against one another. If the dramatic core of the first film was

the notion of kids killing kids, the legitimizer of every possible pitfall in “Catching Fire” is the primal urge to survive. It trumps the familiar love triangle that might have hogged the spotlight a la “Twilight,” and it’s the basis for the boiling revolution that’s starting to bubble over in various Panem Districts. And leading us through it is warrior woman Lawrence, who ultimately reminds one, with a heated glance, how rare it is to find a female, in a strong leading role, in a popular film this good.

It may not be the vanguard triumph certain critics hailed it to be, and Lindsay Lohan’s acting has never been worse, but Paul Schrader’s “The Canyons,” a tale of debauchery in L.A., is worth checking out if only to be part of the conversation. Focusing on a swinging couple embroiled in some shady business (Lohan’s cold other half is played with breakout verve by porn star James Deen), the film is likely to leave eyes rolling, but there’ll be plenty to chat about by the water cooler the next day. here seems to be a prurient interest in my sexual orientation at least by some of my readers. I have always been fascinated by the phrase “sexual orientation.” In college I never viewed orientation day as the least bit sexy. I beg the indulgence of the rest of my readers who are not the least bit interested in the sexual preferences of someone who will be 75 years old next week. At my age, you’re proud if you have any sexual preference at all other than to be left alone. When asked my sexual preference, I usually check the block “rarely.” This column is dedicated to the reader who asked me to “man up and come out of the closet” (although some cynics might say that sentiment is inherently contradictory). Let me begin at the beginning. As I look back over my life, I find some early signs of sexual confusion. For some reason, in a class spelling bee I spelled “closet” c-l-o-s-e-t-t-e. My teacher gently advised me that though the French might approve of the spelling, she had to disqualify me. My classmates mocked me. It was a simpler time, and I decided not to file a civil suit against my school, the teacher and my classmates. My parents thought I was strange because I liked playing in their clothes closet. One time I had to be given medical attention after being overcome by the odor of mothballs. I distinctly remember my Dad saying to me, “Come out of the closet, damn you. Come out of the closet, I said.” He found me semi-conscious next to his old woolen sweater. In truth, I was not a very tough kid. I assiduously avoided fights in the schoolyard. My ability to skip very fast was what saved me (I was the most sought after kid when we performed “Skip to My Lou” on May Day). As I grew older, I wasn’t successful in dating, so I concentrated on playing half-ball games in the Key schoolyard at Eighth and Wolf streets. To my great surprise, in May of 1964, I got really lucky and married a lovely woman (she had once been voted Miss Abruzzese by a private Italian club). That same year I was hired by this newspaper. Some personal facts: I like Cher, even way back when she dressed like a hippie while singing “I Got You, Babe” with Sonny Bono. I wonder how Sonny felt when

Elizabeth’s Chicken with Rice

Changes at SoWe

S

itting on one side of refrigerator are three boneless breasts of chicken while the other has three pork chops. Suddenly, the mind starts spinning in the can’t-decide-what-to-make-for-dinner universe. Luckily, Elizabeth Terenchin pulled one of those universal recipe cards from her collection that covers both main ingredients. Poultry fans can prepare it as a Chicken with Rice dish while pork lovers can change things up with her One Pan Pork offering. Just to make the decision a little tougher, the resident of the 1800 block of South Bancroft Street said her dish comes out great every time. SPR

oWe Bar & Kitchen, 918 S. 22nd St., introduced Matthew Gansert as its new chef, and is in the process of updating the fall menu. The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College grad previously worked at Resurrection Ale House, 2425 Grays Ferry Ave., and Rittenhouse Square’s Pub and Kitchen. “I enjoy both the details of culinary execution as well as the overall hospitality aspects of the industry,” Gansert said. For more information, call 215-5455790 or visit sowephilly.com. SPR

2 teaspoons of butter 3 boneless breasts of chicken or pork chops 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper 1 cup of white converted rice 2 cups of chicken stock 1/4 of an onion, chopped small Capers and mushrooms, optional

Sauté the onion and mushrooms, if desired, with the butter. In a large pan or skillet, brown the chops or the chicken on both sides, and add the salt and pepper. Stella Rossa ■ By Phyllis Stein-Novack R e s ta u r a n t R e v i e w e r

or the past few years, a number of pizza restaurants have opened their doors offering a plethora of pies with classic and unusual ingredients. Nothing can top Pizzeria Vetri when it comes to that crisp, slightly blistered crust and marvelous toppings. But I also like SliCE, Pizzeria Pesto and Zavona Wine Bar Pizzeria. If you are looking for a moderately priced Italian restaurant that welcomes families, Stella Rossa is for you. Located at 10th and Walnut, it is a fine spot for a lunchtime pizza or sandwich, as well as dinner before the theater. On the night we dined, a number of families were off to see “Elf.” The menu offers no surprises, as one can build a meat, cheese and olive board, munch on a salad or tuck into pasta or pizza. Several entrees are on order as well. Stella Rossa was packed when Edward and I arrived early on a recent Saturday evening. There was a 30-minute wait, so we decided to dine at one of the bi-level restaurant’s two bars. The cozy, warm atmosphere featured brick walls with soft lighting and music. The staff was friendly and professional, even when service was at a high pace. I sipped a Negroni ($9)while Edward enjoyed a Bombay Sapphire martini ($9.75). A bartender brought us small square rolls made with pizza dough and a spicy olive oil to keep us happy. I am still dreaming abut the arancini ($8). These fried risotto balls can be difficult to prepare because arborio rice has a tendency be fickle when it is first toasted and laced with stock. Four of them arrived piping hot, and were stuffed with provoCoffee/Café/Sweets Caffe Chicco: 2532 S. Broad St., 215-334-3100, $

lone that oozed creaminess as soon as I took my first bite. The rice also imparted a creamy texture. I also liked the seasoned breadcrumbs that coated the appetizer. We dipped them into a fresh marinara fragrant with chopped basil. Fried calamari has become so ubiquitous, I often hesitate to order it. I don’t like frozen rings of squid that taste like rubber bands. Stella Rossa’s version ($11) was nicely done. Whole baby squid along with rings were coated in a light crumb and gently fried to a golden brown. The coating never fell off the calamari. Sliced banana peppers were included for a bit of punch, and the roasted garlic aioli and spicy marinara dipping sauces were a fine idea. Besides pizza, meatballs also are close to my heart. A number of restaurants make them pretty well, a number can be tasteless and gummy. Stella Rossa offers them prepared with either beef or veal or vegetarian. We chose beef meatballs ($9), and they quickly brought a smile to my face. The beef was beautifully seasoned. They were braised, browned and served in a soup bowl filled with fresh marinara and topped with grated shreds of Parmesan. The crisp crostini were perfect for dipping, but I liked the small dish of fresh ricotta that I schmeered on the bread. Three good-sized meatballs came with the order. Now to the pizza. The dough is made at the restaurant. The red or white pies, which are baked in a wood-burning oven, can be ordered with a variety of toppings. We selected the mushroom pizza ($12) topped with Taleggio, one of my favorite cheeses which is sometimes called the Brie of Italy. It melted beautifully on the Restaurant Review:

I thought the pizza could have been crisper. Stella Rossa offers wine by the four -ounce glass, seven-ounce glass, half-carafe or bottle. I like this wine service because it affords guests to sip a glass or two of different wines with their meal. We chose a halfcarafe of Montepulciano ($17) that was just OK. Redwood’s Maple Bourbon Crème Brûlée

C

Chef Rand Maltese

Redwood 340 South St. 215-238-1512 Owners: Daniel Christensen, Joseph Cucolo and Bill Curry Opened October 2012 redwoodphilly.com

hef Rand Maltese averages about 60 hours a week in the kitchen. It’s not exactly the career path one would picture for someone with a communications degree from South Carolina’s College of Charleston, but just like the dishes he prepares daily at Redwood, 340 South St., the 32-year-old chef just needed time to develop his career recipe. “I worked in a cubicle before,” he said. “I am a hands-on guy. I can’t sit at a computer all day.” He got to know one of the current Redwood owners, Daniel Christensen, while working at a South Carolina restaurant. He dabbled as a bartender and server before rewriting his career direction in the kitchen. The duo also worked together at Redwood’s sister Queen Village establishment Copabanana, 344 South St.,

“Dan always knew I had a passion for food,” Maltese said. “One day he needed a cook really bad.” Now, that responsibility, which includes putting together brunch and dinner menus, is in the hands of the chef, who originally hails from the Maryland area. Redwood’s Maple Bourbon Crème Brûlée is one of the establishment’s current dessert offerings, which occasionally fills that breakfast void. The chef stresses that patience is the key when preparing this dish, as it requires a two-to-four-hour stay in the refrigerator. Maltese has no plans for reducing his hours for the holiday, as Redwood will be open, and offering patrons a three-course Thanksgiving feast.

INGREDIENTS: 1 quart of heavy cream

Staff Photos by Kathryn Poole

3 vanilla beans, split and scraped 3/4 cup of Jim Beam Maple 1 cup of sugar 8 large egg yolks 2 quarts of hot water

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Combine the heavy cream, vanilla beans and Jim Beam in a saucepan, and slowly bring the mixture to a boil. Turn off the heat, and let sit 20 minutes until completely cool. In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks and 1/2 cup of the sugar until the yolks lighten slightly Add the cream mixture, slowly stir-

ring occasionally. Slowly pour the mixture into eight crème brûlée dishes or shallow ramekins. Place them in a larger cake pan or roasting pan. Pour the hot water into the roasting pan, and cook the mixture for 40 minutes. Remove the dishes from the roasting pan, and refrigerate for at least two hours. Set dishes out about 30 minutes prior to serving. Divide the remaining sugar on top of custard. Using a propane torch, torch the sugar until it turns a caramelized brown Let sit for five minutes, and serve. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/ food-and-drink/features.

Hey Son,

It’s been a long year and Mom & Dad still miss your voice. I wish you never left your Michael & Michaela, Dad & I. We all talk of you. We all miss you and love you so very much. I can’t believe you are gone, it hurts so much. I can’t wait to be with you son. Mom will always speak of you. I love you so very much. It hurts my heart to know you are gone, you left your name to carry on Michael A. Montano, Sr.

I want to thank all his friends for being there for his kids. Thank you so very much! And they know who they are!!

Little did we know that morning that God was going to call your name, in life we loved you dearly, and in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you; you did not go alone, for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. Your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Bertha’s family would like to express special thanks to Max from Mancini Funeral Home for the loving care given to our mother, also to Tommy from Mi-Pals for the trays you sent in our time of need. We thank everyone for your flowers, cards and prayers during this difficult time. Love, Denise & Carmen, Grandson Joseph, Ryan & Barbara and Big Joe

Its been a year since God called you away, but we haven’t stopped thinking about you every minute, every day. Wish you were here with us to celebrate these holidays, but you will be in our hearts and in everything we say! Memories and stories are told about you with smiles on our face, a tear or so is always shed but then laughter to replace. We were so lucky to have you, now your in a better place. Until we meet again and we see that beautiful face. We love you Nan our angel!!! Love, Kelly, Kristin,Curt, KellyAnn, Louie, Brandy, Jimmy, Cacey, Ashyia & Zaiden

God Took Him To His Loving Home God saw him getting tired, a cure was not to be. He wrapped him in his loving arms and whispered “Come with me”. He suffered much in silence, his spirit did not bend. He faced his pain with courage, until the very end. He tried so hard to stay with us but his fight was not in vain, God took him to His loving home and freed him from the pain.

Jackie, Charlie and Terri wish to express their sincere gratitude to all our family and friends for the overwhelming outpouring of generosity and compassion extended to us during our time of loss

Pieces of their minds A scholarship-winning junior helped his Bella Vista school to gain acclaim at a chess competition. ■ By Joseph Myers Review Managing Editor

grandmaster status, said. “There’s a lot to play for.” THE PALUMBO PLAYERS gained their chance to compete among other chess enthusiasts through their success in the aforementioned league. The collection of public and charter schools has allowed the current crop of board behemoths and their predecessors to foster camaraderie and enhance comprehension of subjects such as math and science. Palumbo registrants have sought distinction since ’07 and have become consistent maneuverers who have earned the respect of their contemporaries and overseers. “This is an environment very conducive to learning,” Passyunk Square’s Myers said. “There’s great ethnic diversity and strong leadership, and these kids want to contribute to the sense of pride that we look to establish here.” Doing so has meant registering numerous winning campaigns via their alignment with the After School Activities Partnerships. Three seasons ago, they went unblemished in 10 league contests, ascending to the city’s No. 2 ranking and advancing to the finals,

at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php where they fell to Julia R. Masterman High School. Another undefeated regular season run two years ago landed them in fourth among secondary units, with six stars competing in the Carlisle-situated Pennsylvania Chess Championships. Last year yielded another trek to the Cumberland County competition, with Bernard finishing 10th among seventh to 12th graders with a United States Chess Federation rating under 1300 and Dang, who generated three points at The Meadowbrook School, landing in second place in the unrated category for similarly aged and rated participants. “It’s been educational and helpful for me to be on the team,” the latter, a 15-year-old resident of the 500 block of Shunk Street, said. “Everyone’s a cheerleader.” “These guys teach each other,” Myers added. “That’s inspirational to see.” That affinity for fraternity helped the youths earlier this year when they assisted in raising roughly $10,000 to cover a trip to Nashville for the fifth SuperNationals competition. Traveling with the Philadelphia Chess Society team, they added more memories and experience and, most importantly, more appreciation for their sport. “We feel fortunate to have great coaches, and we’re always looking to improve,” Dellomargio said, adding they are closely following the World Chess Championship battle between defending champion Viswanathan Anand and top-ranked Magnus Carlsen for pointers. Bursting with talent, the teenagers hope to accumulate the funds to show off their skills, with Fritz noting they are looking to raise $1,000, which ASAP would use to finance their trips. With so much success behind them, Bernard yearns to amass more opportunities. “ We h o p e t o g o t o a f ew places,” he said. “I think after Meadowbrook, we have momentum.” SPR To contribute to Palumbo’s fund-raising efforts, visit sites. google.com/site/palumbochess/. f he continues to keep coming through with his promises, Christopher Bernard soon might have relatives and friends persuading him to enter politics. Having vowed to his teammates at The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., that he would emerge as a scholarship victor at Nov. 2’s Seventh Philadelphia Metropolitan Grade/High School Chess Championship, the 17-year-old claimed three victories and a draw to earn a seat at the Drexel University-situated Lebow College of Business Summer Economics Institute and lead his Bella Vista squad to third place at Montgomery County’s The Meadowbrook School. “I was kind of nervous even though I thought I would win, so I’m happy I was able to do it,” the junior and resident of the 1600 block of Moore Street said Friday among his chess chums. “I want to get better, so I like having these guys to support me.” The Point Breeze dweller counts senior and fellow 17-year-old co-captain Angelo Dellomargio among his biggest believers. Last year, the Fairmount inhabitant captured the same endowment, which honors the top sophomore or junior performer, and fully expected his peer to join him as a prized piece mover. “The game is mentally intimate,” Dellomargio said of its attraction to him; Bernard; juniors Jacky Chan, Ferdinand Luhur and Sambath Sang; and sophomore Andrew Dang. “It’s individualistic yet unifying and allows us to play with such creativity.” Buying into that

school of thought courtesy of Dellomargio and a coaching staff that includes team founder, New Jersey denizen and Center City-based attorney Frank Fritz and Palumbo Spanish instructor Ed Myers, the latter of the 1100 block of Annin Street, Bernard approached his five matches with his customarily aggressive style and learned after the competition of his financial fortune. “I was surprised but really relieved,” the pupil, who learned the game from his grandfather and has forged a fascination for engineering checkmates since his family’s 2006 arrival from Indonesia, said. “I take chess seriously but overall, it’s supposed to be fun.” Though nearly seven months remain in his junior year, Bernard is already anticipating heading to University City for the weeklong institute, which will find him completing projects that could yield an economics career. It will not, however, involve studying any boards in attempts to frustrate foes. Set to engross himself in Palumbo’s Philadelphia Scholastic Chess League slate, though, the teenager, whose scholarship totals $1,200, will have plenty of occasions to cause furrowed brows and accept congratulatory handshakes. “We all have to try to stay inspired,” Bernard, who would love to achieve

SOLUTIONS

(over 1900 years old) Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt, before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. Oh St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, so that having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach w hile he reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen. With Ecclesiastical Approval, Say for nine days for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail. This prayer was found in the fifthieth year of our Lord Jesus Christ...Make it known everywhere!
