Travel Alternatives

While travel restrictions and COVID concerns may be preventing trips abroad, there are still a few alternative ways to visit far away places.

Virtual walks on YouTube

Turn on your treadmill or simply relax on your couch and watch a virtual walk. There are many destinations to choose from including big cities, small towns, beaches, national parks and historic sites. There typically isn’t anyone talking so the only audio you will hear is the sounds of that location.

Live webcams

Live webcams are set up in almost any location imaginable including tourist destinations, city skylines, small towns, beaches, ski resorts, volcanos and animal sanctuaries.

Books and movies

Reading books and watching movies can be an easy way to temporarily transport you to desirable locations. And some, like Under The Tuscan Sun, have both book and movie options available, so you can choose which one you would prefer.

Travel experts

Watch videos or read books by travel experts like Rick Steves and Samantha Brown who go in-depth on things like history, food and culture.

Virtual recorded tours

When the pandemic hit and travel came to a screeching halt, many popular tourist destinations began posting virtual tours. A simple Google search will provide an extensive list of virtual tour options including museums, zoos and aquariums, safaris, theme parks, national parks and famous historical sites.

Virtual live guided tours

Join a tour guide online in real-time as they walk through some of the world’s most popular cities and unique travel destinations. You can even interact with your tour guide and ask questions throughout the tour.
