Passing of the torch – from one editor to another

It’s the end of an area, so to speak, at the Southpoint Sun newspaper office. Longtime editor Sheila McBrayne has decided to leave the newspaper business and will be handing over the reigns to Mark Ribble. McBrayne graduated from Niagara College’s Journalism-Print program in 1990, and landed a job right away with her hometown paper, The Ridgetown Dominion. On getting the itch to write, McBrayne said, “My Grade 7 t e a c h e r, Mrs. Anderson, told me not to worry Sheila McBrayne, Mark Ribble about my failing grade in math and gave me the best advice ever: You’re a good writer. You should be a writer. So that’s what I did.” With short stints at the Dominion, Rodney Mercury and West Lorne Sun, she was among a group of friends who decided to start their own paper in 1994, The Ridgetown Independent News. McBrayne was editor there from No-

vember 1994 until 2009, when she relocated to Wheatley. She came aboard at the Wheatley Journal in the fall of 2009. Five months later, she collaborated with Jim Heyens to create The Southpoint Sun with the first issue being published on February 3, 2010. The Southpoint Sun has grown and expanded over the years and has become the paper of record for the Leamington, Kingsville and Wheatley area. Under the umbrella of Southpoint Publishing, they have diversified into many creative fields including custom commercial printing and specialty publications like Southpoint Living. Southpoint Publishing also owns The River Town Times in Amherstburg. McBrayne passes the torch to Ribble, who has been with the company for about five years. He started his newspaper career in 1985 as a pressman/compositor with the Leamington Post. From there he migrated to writing a weekly column and also pitched in with advertising sales and editorial assignments. When the Post closed its doors in 2012, he spent some time with the Windsor Star’s circulation department before joining the Sun as an advertising representative. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of being the editor and helping the Sun remain as this area’s top independent weekly newspaper,” he said. “Sheila has left some big shoes to fill.”

Leamington to have needle, syringe disposal bins By Sheila McBrayne LEAMINGTON – Council is trying a new concept for the Municipality of Leamington, which aims to keep used needles out of parks and playgrounds. Leamington Council, at its March 10 meeting, approved a two-year trial to see if sharps and syringe disposal bins are needed. Through a grant from the Ministry of Solicitor General, the Police Services Board was made aware of the funding through the OPP Harm Reduction Strategies.

“It’s more prevalent than you think.” Tim Wilkinson “Residents have complained about discarded needles around town. It’s unfortunate that we need them, but that’s where we’re at,” stated Councillor Bill Dunn. Council approved the purchase of five sharps

Work has begun on Point Pelee main road

LEAMINGTON – The main road into Point Pelee National Park was temporary closed on Wednesday, March 11 as part of a larger federal infrastructure road renewal project, which will result in much-needed repairs and resurfacing of a 7 km stretch of the main road running from the park gate to the Visitor Centre. The main road in Point Pelee National Park was closed to vehicles south of the Marsh Boardwalk day-use area to facilitate road repair activity as part of the larger project. The road remained open from the park entrance to the Marsh Boardwalk, and access to the multi-use trails will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists. The entire main road infrastructure project involves: the underground installation of electrical and phone lines

to minimize impact of utility corridors through important forest and coastal savannah habitat; upgrading sewage treatment to protect the park’s wetland ecosystems; and repaving the 7-kilometre main road, which runs from the park’s entrance to the Visitor Centre. These improvements will benefit species at risk and the park’s natural habitat, improve water quality and significantly decrease long-term maintenance costs. This infrastructure improvement work began in late January 2020 and the full project is expected to be completed by late fall of this year. Throughout the construction period, visitors may experience occasional delays, lane closures and conditions consistent with road re-surfacing.

Lightning Robotics Team 8081 excels at inaugural competition

LEAMINGTON – A rookie robotics team from UMEI Christian High School made their mark at the regional FIRST Robotics competition held February 28 through March 1. Thirty-six robotics teams from high schools across Southwestern Ontario gathered at Durham College in Oshawa to collaborate and learn from each other and compete with their own robots. The UMEI rookie team, Lightning Robotics Team 8081, entered for the first time and surprised their counterparts with three awards. Each year, teams are given a new task to challenge their robots on the competition day. However, it is the job of the team to figure out how to complete these tasks over the course of just a few months. They are given basic tools and supplies to build their robot that they will then use to compete with alongside other teams. The UMEI team has fostered dedicated students

like Natasha Schartner (grade 12) who works as the teams public relations representative and manages sponsorship outreach and relationships, marketing and social media, and branding design and apparel. Lightning Robotics Team 8081 is the home of students interested in robotic engineering, science technology, design, public relations, finance, photography and more. The weekend encompassed 12 qualifying matches for Team 8081 without any downtime. Throughout these matches, the team’s robot was always functional even after sustaining damage. They practiced teamwork by building alliances with other schools and showed their true endurance while problem solving errors and glitches in their robot in between matches. John Fittler and Wes Shuttleworth, lead coaches and UMEI’s science teachers, have this to say about their team: “We were so proud of the way

our group came together as a team and the personal growth that they acquired at this tournament.” Lightning Robotics Team 8081 placed 10th in the qualifying matches and continued on to the playoffs where they were able to form an alliance, something not normally bestowed on a rookie team. Team 8081 left with three awards to take home. Highest Rookie Seed Award for being the highest ranked rookie team in the qualification rounds, Rookie All Star Award, and team member Raylene Schartner received the Safety All Star Award for the team. Participants, judges and spectators alike were impressed by the new rookie team. “I think our team was on a huge high after this whole weekend after months and months of work. It’s exciting to see it all come together in one quick weekend,” said Natasha Schartner.

One final McThot After 30 years as a reporter, editor and owner, it’s time for me to call it a career. I have loved becoming part of the Leamington area community. And I loved serving my hometown of Ridgetown for 20 years.

McTHOTS Sheila McBrayne Being a small town community newspaper reporter and editor is a responsibility more than it is an occupation. You always feel like you are ‘helping’ the groups and organizations promote their causes, their fundraising and their membership. I’m always amazed at the generosity of small communities. I used to say that everything I loved about working in a small town was also everything I disliked about it. I didn’t like that everyone knew your business, but at the same time, it’s because they knew and they cared that you always had support. Leamington and Ridgetown certainly know how to support their own. I’ve reported on so many amazing fundraisers for young kids with medical needs; house fire victims; and other tragic circumstances. It’s so satisfying to be able to help through the power of the press. Of course, even in a small town, it’s not always ‘good news’. I’ve had my share of hard stories to cover. When

issues divide a community, it’s hard to stay neutral and present both sides without hurting feelings. I have seen my industry change so much. When I started in 1990 I worked in the dark room developing film and prints for the paper as well as reporting. We shared three desktop computers. There was no internet. No email. No digital cameras. I know, it seems archaic, but somehow the paper published every week. Now, we’re on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as the printed paper. The times have changed. My favourite description of myself is that I know a little bit about everything and a lot about nothing. I’ve covered stories of politics, science, technology, health, sports and things that I didn’t even know existed. The best part of my 30 years has been meeting so many interesting people. And I’ve met some real characters over the years, and I mean that affectionately. I revel in the amount of friendships I’ve made through the communities. So what’s next? I don’t know. I’m taking the summer off and looking for a second act. I’m not retiring; I’m just leaving the newspaper industry. They say it’s not really work when you love what you do... I love the newspaper business, but it’s time for someone else to enjoy that position and that someone is Leamington’s own Mark Ribble. Mark has been in the business for 35 years and will be an excellent community ambassador.

Active minds. Kent County Board of Education has taken a fresh, new approach to their Kindergarten curriculum. A new program has been implemented, the basis of which is activity or play. Through a series of activity centres including water, sand, paint, writing, etc., the students are able to make their own wonderful discoveries while simultaneously learning to co-operate and assist one another. Pictured above are students from Wheatley Public School’s Kindergarten class as they work together to construct a castle. From left to right - Amy Robinson, Frank Schmidt, Michael Carvalho.

Calm and peaceful he is sleeping, Sweetest rest that follows pain. We who loved him sadly miss him, But trust to meet again.

Flyers strike first; playoffs suspended

Before a robust crowd of almost 800 fans at Highbury Canco Arena, the Leamington Flyers got off to the right start in their GOJHL series against the St. Marys Lincolns last Thursday. At game time, the future of the series was unknown, but the Flyers struck first in the series with a decisive 4-1 win at home. After the game, the league announced they were suspending the 2019-20 playoffs until further notice due to the COVID-19 virus. Hockey Canada further confirmed that decision, shutting down all hockey under its umbrella for the foreseeable future. The home team fired 39 shots at Lincolns’ goalie Kyle Curtin, but it was St. Marys who struck first. Brock Trichilo beat Flyers’ netminder Ryan Polidori at 15:20 of the first period. Polidori shut the door from that point on, facing 25 more shots. The Flyers responded with three unanswered goals in the second and an empty net tally in the third to ice the victory. Wyatt O’Neil, Nicholas Beneteau and Jacob Kalandyk scored in the second frame, with Dylan Montie collecting the empty-netter with 15 seconds remaining in the game. The game only produced two minor penalties, one to each team. With that, the Flyers players and coaching staff sit in limbo, wondering what will become of their perfect

“I was very proud of my team and the way they played under those circumstances.” – Cam Crowder

playoff record of 5-0. Coach Cam Crowder remarked how weird it felt to play such an important game with so much chatter about cancellation even prior to puck drop. It made for an uneasy feeling. “I was very proud of my team and the way they played under those circumstances,” he said. Crowder went on to thank the fans, the players and

the staff for such a successful year. “We had almost 800 fans out, which was unbelievable given the circumstances.” He was, however, disappointed for the graduating players. “I feel for the 20-year-olds who are graduating from junior hockey, ending their careers because of a viral outbreak.” 4150 Sandwich St. Windsor ON

Lady Cavs host OFSSAA volleyball KINGSVILLE – The Kingsville Lady Cavaliers hosted the OFSAA AA Volleyball championships last week, finishing in fourth place their pool. The tournament, featuring 20 teams from around the province, was played at KDHS, LDSS, Migration Hall and UMEI. Kingsville, in Pool C, kicked off the tournament against Ottawa’s

Samuel-Genest, losing 25-4 and 25-8. The Lady Cavs found themselves up against Streetsville Secondary in match two, falling in two games, 25-16 and 25-9. Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School from Sudbury was their third opponent of the tournament. Needing to put some points on the scoreboard, Kingsville pushed Lo-Ellen to the limit, falling 25-

21 and 25-22 in straight games. Game four of the round-robin found them up against Fenelon Falls, with the Cavaliers winning both games of this one, 25-22 and 25-18. That set up a best-offive consolation match against a strong Port Perry team on Tuesday evening at Migration Hall. The Cavs held tight with the Rebels, but lost in

three straight games, 2522, 25-20 and 25-13. Port Perry went on to compete in the consolation final, where they lost to Lo-Ellen. The gold medal match between Streetsville and Burlington’s Nelson High went four games with Streetsville coming out on top. Tournament organizers were Jason Leili and Sydney Booth.

Kingsville Cavliers’ Katelyn Bergen (6), helps teammate Kyra Lear at the net during the Cavs’ game against LoEllen, played at LDSS last Tuesday. Kingsville lost the match 21-25 and 22-25. (Sun photo) Kingsville coach Sydney Booth, with her back to the camera, gathers her team at the OFSSAA AA Volleyball Championships last week. The Lady Cavs dropped this match to Lo-Ellen Park out of Sudbury by 21-25 and 2225 scores. The Cavaliers finished fourth in their pool and lost their playoff match to a strong entry from Port Perry. Pets of the Week

LADY

5 year old female - Lady is a very sweet and loving feline. She ADORES being pet and is always asking to have her head scratched. Lady loves to be by your side or perched up on you lap. She has no interest in playing with any toys and would much rather just be showered with your love. Lady is a little shy in kennel and opens up when she feels less confined, a home with no young children trying to be all over her would be best.

GROOT 3 years old Anatolian Shepherd Mix - I’m a sweet boy full of energy, I hope you’re looking for an active fella! I LOVE exploring and being a dog, that sometimes I forget a human is on the other end of the leash, so it’s safe to say I’ll need some help with leash walking and not pulling you or bouncing all over the place. I would love a yard to run in, and will need other ways to expel my energy. I’m also a big cuddle bug and will give you all the love in the world!

Filipino basketball league opens The annual Filipino Basketball League, organized by the Filipino-Canadian Association of Leamington, hosted its opening ceremony at the Kinsmen Recreation Complex on Sunday, March 8. The opening ceremony was a huge success. It was attended by the players, sponsors, organizers, volunteers, family and friends. This year there are seven teams from Leamington and two teams from Windsor, all playing under the banner “We Are One”, which is to help provide the Filipino community – some of which are migrant workers – with local support and camaraderie. Games will be played every Sunday and the league runs until May 31. The season wraps up with a closing ceremony and championship games.

Local boxers hoping to fight in Scotland By Sheila McBrayne KINGSVILLE – Kingsville boxing coach Doug Patterson has three young men who are qualified to box in the Scotland versus Canada Tournament to be held in May. “Hopefully, all three will be fighting in Scotland… We’re just waiting for the nod if there’s someone for them to fight,” said Patterson. All three are registered with Fighting Island Boxing Club in Amherstburg and train at Seng’s Martial Arts and Fitness in Kingsville. TIAGO BALTERIO Tiago is a two-time youth 17-18 year old national champion and will be boxing in the World Youth Championships in Asia in the fall. Despite a background of only about two and half years of competitive organized boxing, Balteiro’s accomplishments include gold medals in the 2018 Ontario Golden Gloves, Canadian Boxing Championships and Ontario Silver Gloves. Also, last year he won gold in the Brampton Cup and was also the champion of the 2017 Ontario Golden Gloves.

TYLER ST. JOHN-WORTH Tyler St. John-Worth of Tilbury competed in Toronto in the 2019 Bronze Gloves tournament. St. John-Worth entered the Men’s Open Elite 64 kg class. He has boxed in Hungary, Russia, Ireland and was in Scotland three months ago.

LUCA COPPOLA Patterson’s third fighter is Luca Coppola, 126 pounds, from Leamington. All three fighters compete nationally and internationally. “I have produced eight Canadian gold medallists and would like to produce a few more as long as I can continue coaching,” said the 75-yearold Patterson.

Tiago Balteiro, left, gets his hands taped by coach Doug Patterson, as he prepares for the upcoming Scotland versus Canada tournament being held in Scotland in May. (Submitted Photos)
