Pumpkin Spice Season
What’s hot...
It’s that time of year when pumpkin spice is everywhere you turn. The Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte is credited with starting the trend and you can now enjoy one without having to drive very far since the world’s largest coffee house chain opened a location in Leamington last year.
Sustainable Clothing TikTok Is Taking Over TikTok is quickly becoming the most popular app in the world. Users choose from a database of music and sounds that they then use to record no more than 15 second videos of themselves lip-syncing, dancing or doing comedy sketches, and sometimes a combination of the three.

It’s Christmas For Sports Fans
There is no shortage of sports to watch this time of year, with the football season well underway, the start of the hockey and basketball seasons, and the Major League Baseball playoffs.
If you haven’t already heard about sustainable clothing, you will soon. It refers to clothing that is made using more environmentally conscious methods of production and fabrics made from recycled or organic materials, like the Carolyne Sweater (above) from arcapparel.ca that was made with organic cotton.

RIFT SAWN WHITE OAK
White oak in kitchen cabinetry is very desirable for 2020! The white oak is cut in a way that reveals a linear grain and manufacturers of custom cabinetry are playing with bleaching and staining the wood to remove the natural orange undertones. It is definitely more costly but the effect is simply gorgeous!

Must-Haves 5
For A Stylish Cold Weather Wardrobe
by Victoria Baird
For many, fall is launching into the season of overwhelm: you’ve survived back-to-school but that still leaves Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s and anything in between such as a conference, birthday, wedding or anniversary celebrations to plan for. Unfortunately this usually means one of two things happen when it comes to planning/shopping for fall: A – You do nothing, feeling closet paralysis, wearing the same outfit over and over because it works. B – You impulsively buy a handful of gorgeous new items (the latest and greatest) yet you are unsure of how to incorporate them into your current fall wardrobe. Without a doubt, these five pieces will create a great foundation within your closet to be worn over and over and in different ways.

DARK DENIM JEANS
A good pair of dark denim jeans can take you almost anywhere. Dressed up with pumps, blouse and blazer on a weekday to rolled up and paired with a sweater or tee and sneakers on the weekend.
CLASSIC WHITE SHIRT Maybe you have one already in your closet and are bored with wearing it the same way with a blazer for work, 9-5. Shake things up. Try tying at the waist, paired with your jeans or a leather skirt, add a statement piece of jewelry and booties for a night on the town.

A boot that sits just below the knee tends to be the most flattering for all body shapes. A simple tall black riding boot can be paired with leggings, denim and skirts/dresses.
A GREAT COAT
Living in a climate that can be unpredictable from fall into winter puts us in a pickle. We want warmth and style, and a long wool coat will do just that. Wear it buttoned up when the weather is cold, or open with a more relaxed feel (like t-shirt, jeans and sneakers) for a weekend street style look on a pleasant day.

A Blanket Scarf
Don’t be shy about size, blanket scarves are supposed to be BIG. Wear as a scarf or use as a wrap instead of a jacket. And it’s a stylish alternative compared to a sloppy cardigan to have on hand if your office gets chilly.

Essential oils have been growing in popularity over the years, and for good reason. They offer us so many ways to support our bodies, homes and minds using non-toxic, plant-based products that truly work. Diffusing certain oils and blends is the perfect way to not only cleanse your air of all those germs floating around, but it also helps ease sinus congestion and makes your house smell great too. Essential oils have anti-microbial properties which means they truly clean the air and help build immune systems.

These little bottles of plant juice offer so many wonderful benefits, not only for cold and flu season, but for just about any ailment you may have. Here are some fun facts about essential oils: • Essential oils are all-natural compounds found in the root, petal, rind, leaf or bark of a plant • They have anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties • Essential oils can get into our bloodstream within 30 seconds • Oils are 50-70 times more powerful than herbs • They help support physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing Oils can be diffused, applied topically (need to be diluted with a carrier oil) and used to make a DIY all purpose cleaning spray. But with this industry’s growing popularity, you’ll see oils popping up everywhere you turn so be warned, not all oils are equal. Make sure you are using good quality oils otherwise you could be doing more harm than good.

THE 411 ON
CBD When cannabis became legal last year, it brought attention to the various different ways it can be used. One way is CBD, which has become so popular that many retailers are having trouble keeping CBD products in stock due to the high demand. Here is what you need to know about CBD.
What is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol and it’s one of the more than 100 chemical compounds found in cannabis plants, including marijuana and hemp.
Can CBD get you high?
No, on its own CBD does not produce a high. The ‘high’ comes from another compound in cannabis called tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC.
How is CBD being used?
Many people are now replacing traditional medications with CBD products to aid in the treatment of a variety of conditions including anxiety, insomnia, menopause, inflammation and chronic pain like arthritis. There are claims that CBD can be used to treat cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease, although many medical experts warn that more scientific evidence is needed to back these claims.
How can CBD be taken?
CBD is available in different forms including oil, topical cream, spray, tincture and edibles.
18 | Southpoint Living
What other products is CBD found in?
While primarily touted for its medical benefits, CBD can also be found in many other products like cosmetics, lotions, candy, coffee and water.
How popular is CBD?
VERY popular, as evidenced by the increasing number of products hitting the market and the fact that retailers are having trouble keeping CBD products in stock.
Celebs are getting in on the CBD action
A number of celebrities are launching their own line of CBD products including entertaining guru Martha Stewart and comedian Chelsea Handler. And CBD parties have become popular with celebrities after Kim Kardashian had a CBD themed baby shower.
CBD isn’t just for people
There are CBD products now on the market for pets (mainly dogs), to be used to treat many of the same ailments that humans are using it for like joint pain and anxiety.
Is CBD legal?
In Canada, CBD products are currently only permitted for sale in licensed cannabis stores. However, that could change as it’s anticipated that the government will legalize CBD soon. In the United States, CBD is legal if it comes from the hemp plant and contains less than 0.3% THC.
Where can you buy CBD products?
In Canada, CBD products are currently only permitted for sale in licensed cannabis stores. However, a large number of CBD products are available online and in unlicensed stores. In the United States, CBD products are readily available in many locations including many major drugstore chains.
CBD buyer beware
Medical experts warn to proceed with caution when using CBD products due to the lack of regulation of the products and since formal research is lacking regarding the long-term effects associated with using it. When in doubt, talk to a physician or medical professional about whether CBD is right for you.

Fashion and beauty: • Imagine a vacation photo on Facebook that tags merchandise for sale, like the new Gucci bag you picked up in Vradero. • You can already virtually try on makeup using Sephora or a pair of glasses using Warby Parker. • While in your suburban house you visit a fashion house with personalized styling backed by data science and artificial intelligence, like Stitch Fix and Project Muse. Entertaining: • Throwing a do for a few is easy since you can welcome guests from the kitchen with a video equipped doorbell, grill from the comfort of your three season Florida room with the iGrill and order food from catering apps UberEats or Skip the Dishes. • Expecting more guests? Avoid repeating the Wi-Fi password with the Amazon Echo smart speaker feature called Alexa Blueprints that lets you create your own questions and answers. Food and drinks: • Get ready for a robot to mix your drink. Boston restaurant Spyce has an automated robotic kitchen designed by MIT engineering graduates and the soon-to-open Sushi Singularity restaurant in Tokyo will prepare custom meals using a 3D printer.
Health and wellness: • Telemedicine already connects remote communities with doctors, but combine telemedicine with virtual reality and you open the opportunity for doctors to remotely assist patients with dementia or cognitive impairments. • Health-to-home or healthto-work are key trends in healthcare, such as HENRY The Dentist that provides in-office checkups, mobile mammography services and fertility hormone testing from home thanks to Toronto startup Lilia. • Other trends include bluelight blocking glasses to help you sleep better and smart clothing to keep you cool during menopause. Travel: • Keep an eye out for recognition technology including hotel check-ins with facial recognition or access to hotel rooms by fingerprint or mobile phone. • Augment friendly TSA staff with robots who can detect concealed weapons. • Kayak already sizes up your bag long before pre-boarding with its augmented reality app, and AI and virtual reality will help you pick the right hotel room in the right neighbourhood.

TRAVELS Who:
Ashton and Alan Beausoleil of Leamington
Where:
Rome and Praiano, Italy for their honeymoon.
Why:
We decided on Italy for our honeymoon because it incorporated all of our favourite things: pizza, pasta and WINE! Neither of us had ever been to Europe before and we thought Italy would be a perfect place to start. We also have family and friends who were recently there which was helpful for recommendations.
About their trip We flew into Rome and spent our first night there, which was great. The next morning, we took a train to Naples and then private transportation to Praiano that we arranged through our villa. The transit system, Italiarail, is extremely user friendly and safe, especially when you don’t speak the language. Praiano is located on the Amalfi Coast near the popular town of Positano. We chose to stay in Praiano instead of Positano because it was recommended to us as a quieter town with fewer tourists. We were so happy with our choice! Everyone was friendly and it was so safe to walk around at all hours. The restaurants were AMAZING and the view is undeniable. Our day trip to Capri was also an experience I would highly recommend. We used the company Positano Boats which picked us up right at the marina in Praiano. We also ventured into Positano on our second last day on the coast. We took a city bus which picked us up right outside our villa and brought us to downtown Positano. Positano is beautiful but is very busy, so it was nice to come back to Praiano at night to relax. Although Praiano is much quieter than Positano, there is still lots to do and I would stay there again. After four days on the coast we headed back to Rome for our last two nights where we toured the city and did all of the popular stops including the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Coliseum, Roman ruins, Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps which are all a must see, at least for your first trip.
Their recommendations PRAIANO

Amazing view, clean and modern. They have a pool and a restaurant in-house where they make everything fresh! It is a great location to walk anywhere in town.

DAY TRIP
RESTAURANT
The view here is amazing. You’re close to the top of the mountain and the food compares to nothing we have ever had. Black truffle pasta and fresh seafood!
This day tour was a must! We used the company Positano Boats which picked us up at the marina in Praiano around 8:30am. We saw many sites on the boat ride and once you arrive in Capri you are free to do whatever you choose.
Definitely try to make a reservation as this place is ALWAYS packed. The food is absolutely amazing. There are two women who sit at the front window and hand roll all of the noodles used in the restaurant. Not only is it a cool experience but you’ll talk about this pasta for the rest of your life!

INFANTILE SPASMS
Why it’s so hard to diagnose and why an early diagnosis is crucial When Jessica Johnston’s son Bradley was four months old, she and her husband Ryan noticed that he had stopped smiling. Not long after, he began crying hysterically day and night.
it looked exactly like what was happening to Bradley. Her paediatrician, Dr. Ann Contrucci, advised her to take him to the hospital immediately.
The doctor in the ER witnessed Bradley having a spasm and “We could not calm him down said it looked like reflux, but no matter what we did,” Jessica Jessica refused to accept that said. “I look back at it now and I diagnosis. think that was him telling us that something was not right.” “I told her, You don’t understand, he used to smile, he used to babble, he used to follow my But it wasn’t until they noticed that Bradley’s twin brother Blake fingers, he used to look at me, was clearly “leaps and bounds” he used to make eye contact ahead of his brother in terms of and he’s not doing any of that.” development that the couple realized something was wrong. An EEG in June showed that Bradley is clear of Infantile Spasms, although he has to remain on seizure medication until January 2020. Bradley is now one year old and is three to four months behind in his development. However, it’s a good sign that his development is progressing again as he is now able to sit and chew food on his own, and he’s beginning to crawl and talk.

He does physiotherapy monthly and he will need occupational therapy along with speech therapy in the coming months. Long term, there are still many unknowns for Bradley; Jessica and Ryan know they just have to wait and see how he develops intellectually, but they know his long-term prognosis is better because of their persistence early on. “The doctors have told us that the things working in our benefit is that he was developing fine before this started happening and that we caught it early and treated it early,” Jessica said. It was two weeks after they had first noticed Bradley’s behaviour that he was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms. And Jessica is happy that she trusted her instinct, despite worrying that doctors and nurses were going to think she was just being a “paranoid mom”. “With this disorder, every moment counts because it can do such irreversible brain damage,” Jessica explains. “But we honestly do believe that we’re one of the lucky ones.”

About Infantile Spasms • Infantile Spasms is a rare form of child epilepsy. • It often starts when a child is three to seven months old. • The spasms are brief (only a few seconds long) but can occur in clusters that can last several minutes and occur numerous times throughout the day. • Some indicators of a spasm are the arms and legs jerking, head nod or the eyes opening wide. • Infantile spasms are most likely to occur immediately after a child has woken up. • Infantile Spasms can be diagnosed with an EEG, MRI or CT. • Infantile Spasms can occur because of a pre-existing issue, such as a brain injury or genetic disorder, although in some cases there is no identifiable cause. • Many of the symptoms of Infantile Spasms are similar to the symptoms of colic or reflux, often making an early diagnosis difficult. • If you believe your child is having Infantile Spasms, you should see a doctor immediately due to the importance of early treatment.

Her instagram account is a steady stream of pin-worthy pictures including mouth-watering food, incredible thrift store finds and impressive holiday decor. Here is one of her favourite family recipes.
My mom’s squash and apple bake is a family tradition. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, and makes a nice foil to the other vegetables and proteins you are serving. It’s super easy and you can assemble it ahead of time. Throw it in the oven about an hour and a half before you’re ready to eat.

Now you need to
BUDGET
for all those gifts
Many holiday shoppers worry about whether or not they will have enough money for gifts, while others anticipate using credit cards or other financing methods to stretch their abilities to spend even further. This can make the holiday season more stressful than it needs to be while affecting finances into the new year. Budgeting for the holidays is a great way to keep spending in check. With these suggestions and shopping strategies, holiday shoppers can better manage their spending. LOOK AT LAST YEAR
The first step to establishing a budget is to review spending from last year. See how much you allotted to each person and how much you actually ended up spending on those people. Did you go over or under? Think about the other ways you spent money, including on decorations, entertaining, etc. Once you have a clear picture of how you spent your money last year, you can start building a budget for this year.
SET LIMITS
Set limits on spending. You may want to be generous with everyone and go above and beyond, but overspending is impractical and can have some grave consequences. Many financial planners recommend shoppers spend no more than 1.5 percent of annual income on holiday expenses, so establish realistic spending limits that won’t break the bank.

MAKE A LIST
Select the gifts that have the most importance or those you want to buy the most, and budget with them in mind. Resist the temptation to buy extra items in an effort to make gifts look more impressive.
KEEP TRACK
Be sure to keep receipts and maintain a log of all your holiday spending. You will not know if you are sticking to your budget if you do not keep a running tab of all your spending. Those receipts and spending records also will be handy to keep for next year when you have to establish a new budget.
[ new year ]
New Year, New Resolutions New Year’s is a time to reflect on the year that passed, and to plan for the year ahead. But if you’re tired of making the typical New Year’s resolutions (we’re looking at you working out and eating healthier), here are some others to consider: • • • • • • • • • •
