Self-care Minimalism After spending so much time at home, the appreciation for less clutter is at an all-time high.

It means different things to different people, but no matter what it means to you, there is no denying we could all use a little more of it these days.

NFT

Picnics With so many activities limited to the outdoors, it’s no surprise that picnics will be a popular form of social gathering this summer.

What’s hot...

Audio-Only Apps Clubhouse started the trend and now social media giants like Facebook and Twitter are joining in. There are no pretty pictures with witty captions; with audio-only apps it’s all about talking to others or listening to others talk. You can ‘host a room’ to chat about a topic of your choice, or you can listen in on other chats and potentially even get ‘on stage’, which simply means you get the chance to talk in someone else’s room. 6 | Southpoint Living

Vegetable gardens Last summer, many people tried their hand at growing their own vegetables and it turns out a lot of people really enjoyed doing it. While the homemade bread fad seems to have faded, vegetable gardens seem less like a fad and more like a summer tradition.

There is a lot of talk about NFTs these days but what exactly are they? According to Forbes, an NFT is a digital asset that represents real-world objects like art, music, in-game items and videos. They are bought and sold online, frequently with cryptocurrency, and they are generally encoded with the same underlying software as many cryptos.

Buying local Now, more than ever, we know the importance of shopping local. Many small businesses are at risk of permanently closing if they don’t get the support of the local community. Here are a few easy ways you can support small businesses: • Seek out small businesses for items you previously bought at larger stores or online • Recommend your favourite small businesses to family and friends • Share social media posts from small businesses to help spread the word about their products and services • Write reviews online in support of your favourite small businesses • Even if you don’t need to purchase anything from them now, consider buying a gift card that can be used later.

Summer Beauty

Freelance makeup artist and Shoppers Beauty Boutique Cosmetician Katarina Ingratta shares five of her favourite summer beauty products.

Mascara

A quick and easy way to enhance your eyes. My ultimate favourite mascara is the Lancôme Lash Idôle. The unique brush allows for even application with maximum separation and volume.

Tinted moisturizer

A lightweight formula and coverage that is a great substitute for your usual foundation in hot summer months. The Smashbox Halo Healthy Glow All-In-One Tinted Moisturizer is comfortable to wear and has an added SPF of 25. It evens out the skin’s complexion with light coverage.

Moisturizing primer with SPF

To stay hydrated and protected from harsh UV rays. The Lancôme UV Expert Aquagel Defense 50 is an all day primer and moisturizing gel with SPF 50. It melts into the skin without leaving a white cast and helps with makeup longevity.

Liquid highlighter

For a natural, lit-from-within glow. The Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter leaves the skin looking dewy and fresh. It can be used as a highlighter on the high points of the face, such as cheekbones or the tip of the nose, or just as a sheer foundation.

TAME THAT

BRASS

Easy ways to prevent and correct brassy hair this summer. Exposure to chlorine and summer sun can contribute to brassiness, making hair more vulnerable to damage and breakage. Hair products that contain silicones, sulfates, parabens, and colouring can also contribute to the problem. Avoiding hair damage and unwanted colour changes comes down to prevention and correction. These tips can make a difference in hair health. • Specialty hair masks that coat tresses can be effective to protect against chlorine or salt water, which may leach into hair shafts and cause brittleness and brassy hues. • Stick to the shade when outdoors to avoid having hair fried by exposure to the sun’s UV rays. If that’s not possible, wear a hat or hair products that contain UV protection. • Consider highlights over all-over hair lightening/ colouring. With highlights, there will be fewer coloured portions of your hair and less opportunity for lightened hair to turn brassy. Stylists can add enough highlights to make the total effect appear much brighter. • Use a toner or correctional “purple” shampoo. Toning products rely on colour wheel technology, with opposite colours on the wheel cancelling each other out. Orange and yellow (brassy) hues are opposite blue and purple. Therefore, using special shampoos that contain blue and purple pigments will offset brassy hues. • Determine if the water in your home is “hard,” which means it has high levels of chlorine, metals and minerals in it. Water-softening systems and filters can help mitigate hard water issues. Also, there’s no need to wash hair multiple times a week, which can cause hair dye to fade more quickly.

Summer Styles that are always in style

by Victoria Baird Whether this summer has you staying local due to travel restrictions or you’re heading to a cottage or planning now for a winter getaway, one thing is for sure - you will never go wrong adding one or all of these pieces into your summer wardrobe!

1

WHITE DENIM

It’s a must-have for your summer wardrobe. Whether you choose a white denim pair of jeans, jacket, shorts, or skirt (or all of the above!), you’ll be amazed how refreshed your current pieces will look paired against it.

2

SUNDRESS

3

A sundress is the epitome of how we want to feel in the summer - carefree and feminine. The right dress will take you from a backyard bbq to an outdoor wedding to a day walking barefoot in the sand. Not only will you look fabulous, but you’ll also be comfortable and cool.

ESPADRILLE SANDALS

4 5

Espadrille sandals offer your feet a kiss of comfort and summer style. With the traditional roped bottom and cotton upper, it makes for the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe.

KIMONO

Originally worn as a formal garment in Japan, a kimono is now the ideal layering piece in the heat of the summer. The long, loose, light weight and almost sheer robe with wide sleeves adds interest and personality to any outfit.

STRAW HANDBAG

I can picture it now draped in the crook of my arm, with a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine peeking out, as I’m walking barefoot across the grass in my sundress to set up our picnic date under the big tree. Seriously though, straw bags come in various shapes, sizes and styles so find the one that works best for you!

WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE

HOUSEPLANTS Houseplants can be used to improve indoor spaces, and they also provide various health benefits.

Help with allergies Rooms with houseplants tend to have less dust and mold in them than those without any foliage. Leaves and other parts of the plants serve as natural filters, catching airborne particles and allergens. Put more oxygen into the air The human respiratory system works by bringing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite during photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide and then release oxygen. Plants can put much more oxygen into the air, improving indoor conditions. Increase indoor humidity and reduce illness Studies found that indoor plants can increase humidity in indoor spaces, which decreases the incidences of sore throats, dry coughs, dry skin, and the common cold. Higher absolute humidity can decrease the chances of survival and transmission of the flu virus.

Filter the air Researchers found certain houseplants can combat the potentially harmful effects of volatile organic compounds. Plants may help filter out VOCs like benzene, acetone and formaldehyde, which can enter indoor air via cleaning supplies, dry-cleaned clothes, furniture, and paints. Improve interior atmosphere Plants can be used to screen unattractive areas, moderate room temperature by shading spots from the sun and even reduce noise. Plants also can improve ambiance and create a pleasing atmosphere in a room. Can improve mood Growing and caring for plants can alleviate everyday stress, help people feel more at home and improve mental health. A rehab center in Norway found patients reported a greater increase in well-being four weeks after having greenery added to their surroundings.

THE 411 ON PLANTBASED EATING What is plant-based eating?

In the simplest terms, plant-based eating means the emphasis is put on eating foods that are derived from plants.

What type of foods are considered plant-based?

Vegetables, whole grains, fruits, beans, seeds and nuts.

Does plant-based eating mean I can’t eat meat?

Some people who eat a plantbased diet choose to eliminate meat altogether (like vegans and vegetarians), while others may focus mostly on plant-based foods while occasionally eating meat.

Will plant-based eating help with weight loss? While weight loss isn’t guaranteed, if you eat more plant-based foods you will likely eat less foods that are known to cause weight gain. 16 | Southpoint Living

What are the benefits of plant-based eating?

Plants have essential nutrients that can’t be found in other foods. Plant-based eating can boost your immune system and help to reduce inflammation in the body. The combination of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre found in plant-based foods could potentially reduce your chances of developing things like type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and some types of cancers.

Doesn’t plant-based eating lack in certain areas, like protein?

There are a number of different sources of protein that don’t come from meat sources, like beans, legumes, peanut butter, soy milk, nuts and seeds. You can also incorporate protein powders into meals if you worry you aren’t getting enough.

Are all plant-based foods healthy?

Not necessarily. If your plantbased foods are coming in a package, make sure you read the ingredient list. Some foods that are marketed as plant-based may actually contain sugar, additives and preservatives. The best way to eat as healthy as possible is to try to eat as many “whole” foods as possible, food that’s in its original form that hasn’t been processed or had ingredients added to it.

What is the best way to start eating a plant-based diet? The easiest way to start eating more plant-based foods is to make small, gradual changes including making simple swaps like the following: • Instead of dairy milk, try almond, coconut or cashew milk • Instead of butter, try avocados or coconut oil • Instead of using eggs for baking, try apple sauce • Instead of a beef burger, try a black bean or chickpea burger

Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl

INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups cooked sweet potato (approx 2 large sweet potatoes, remove skin)

• 1 cup black beans, drained and mashed • 1 1/2 cup quinoa, cooked (you may also use rice or lentils) • 1/2 cup green onions, chopped • 1/2 cup to 1 cup of oats • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce • 1 tablespoon paprika • Salt + pepper to taste • Any other seasoning that you like! DIRECTIONS: 1. Cook your sweet potatoes in the oven or air fryer at 400F for 20-30 minutes. 2. Cook your quinoa by following the instructions on the package. 3. In the meantime, while your potatoes and quinoa are doing their thing, rinse and drain your black beans. Dry your beans off with a towel to soak up some water and mash them in a separate bowl. 4. Wash and chop your green onions. 5. Once your potatoes are done cooking as well as your quinoa, allow everything to cool and then measure your ingredients out. 6. Add your cooked potato to a large bowl and mash it. Add your quinoa, mashed black beans, 1/2 cup of oats, green onions, BBQ sauce and seasoning. 7. Stir everything together with a large spoon or use your hands here - have some fun! If they are too sticky, add in the other 1/2 cup of oats. 8. Take about 2-3 tablespoons worth of your mixture to form your patties. The thinner they are the easier they will be to cook. Form the shape of your burgers and place them on a plate. 9. Cook these on the BBQ for about 15-20 minutes. They should not stick, but if they do at first, be patient! You can also cook them over the stove top with a little bit of olive oil.

Full of antioxidants, protein and good fats! BLEND THE FOLLOWING INGREDIENTS: • 1/2 an avocado • 1/2 frozen banana • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder • 2 ice cubes • 1/2 cup water or plant based milk (or more if needed)

• Cacao nibs • Coconut • Pumpkin seeds • Chia seeds • Granola • Strawberries Enjoy!

Easy Healthy Jalapeño Hummus INGREDIENTS: • 2 cloves garlic • 1 can chickpeas drained and rinsed • 3 tablespoons lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup olive oil • 2 jalapeño peppers (seeded and chopped) DIRECTIONS: In a large blender or food processor, add all of the ingredients in one by one. Process away until it turns into a puree. That’s it! Store your hummus in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Serve with fresh cut up veggies, crackers or pita bread. The benefits of

Micro Weddings

While some people are waiting until gathering restrictions are lifted so they can have a large wedding, many couples are opting to have a more intimate micro wedding. Micro weddings include less than 50 guests and feature a number of benefits that wouldn’t be possible with a larger wedding.

Photo by Vicki Bartel, stemware by Wild Dandelion Rentals

Spend more time with guests When you have a smaller guest list, you have more time to spend with each of your guests and have more time to enjoy your wedding instead of spending the entire reception trying to talk to hundreds of guests.

Save money or stretch the budget With a smaller guest list you can spend less money, however many couples are taking their existing budget and using that money to have a more elegant and luxurious wedding than they would have had with a larger number of guests.

More unique venue options are available When you only need to seat a small number of people, that allows for non-traditional venue options (i.e. backyard, art gallery, AirBNB) that wouldn’t be possible with a large number of guests. Or if a traditional venue is what you’re looking for, many are now offering packages for micro weddings.

Less stress over the seating plan The dreaded seating plan becomes a lot easier with a smaller number of guests.

Make your wedding more than a day With a smaller number of guests, your wedding could become a full weekend affair instead of just a single day, with an extravagant dinner the night before and a decadent brunch the day after. 20 | Southpoint Living

Make it more personal for your guests A smaller number of guests allows for a more personalized affair, including elegant table settings and wedding favours with their name on it.

Many people like the intimacy of a small wedding, and there is a good chance this trend will continue even after large numbers of people are allowed to celebrate together again.

N

Here is what local vendors are saying about micro weddings:

Gloria Cavenago & Linda Jeffery Magnolia Ranch We love being able to create a unique and intimate space so couples can focus on the importance of being united with their closest family or friends. Being in a gorgeous, natural setting requires very little embellishment and the photo memories will last a lifetime. Nicole Vallance Photography

Caitlin Luno-Gilligan Wild Dandelion Rentals I could not be more excited about the new micro wedding trend! Over the past year, I have seen a shift in how couples are planning, and what is treated as a priority. More than anything, they want their closest friends and family around them on their big day. Because the guest list is so much smaller, they actually have time to enjoy the wedding they spent so much time planning. I've also noticed people are really focusing on the details because they have five tables as opposed to fifty. This translates to absolutely beautiful photos and guests are treated to a one of a kind experience tailored exactly to the couple.

Cate Foulon & Katricia Crosby Sage River Events With the change of the world, the normal wedding industry has had to make changes in order to adapt and still be able to celebrate love. Introducing micro weddings has been one of our favourite parts of the past year. Micro weddings allow couples to still celebrate their union with their close loved ones, without any stress. Even with the industry working its way back to a norm, we see micro weddings becoming a staple in the event world - and we are thrilled!

Linda Shean, Sherry Seguin & Aime DeLaronde Flower Fashions On King Micro weddings are intimate, warm and simple. It’s the perfect way to simply celebrate without all the stress. Sometimes simple is best. We have to embrace the situation and look for the positive. We truly see a more relaxed bride. Southpoint Living | 21

Outdoor Entertaining

[ entertaining ]

MUST-HAVES FOR

With social distancing, stay-at-home protocols and social gathering restrictions, we’re definitely not entertaining people in our home like we used to. BUT, there’s still ways for us to connect with the important people in our lives and one of the hottest trends is to move the party outdoors! Here are nine must-haves for outdoor entertaining:

Mara Derikx

joyfulhostess.com @joyfulhostess

BLANKETS & PILLOWS

COMFY SEATING

Scatter a few blankets and pillows on the seating as well as having a designated basket for extra items. This way, guests can easily grab what they need to get comfy.

Don’t have enough? Ask guests to bring their favourite lawn chairs or set up pillows and blankets picnic style.

FIRE LIGHTING

When the sun goes down, set the mood with the soft glow of firelight and white string lights. If using real candles, keep them protected from the wind by putting tea lights inside mason jars. Another option is to swap real candles for battery operated ones. 22 | Southpoint Living

Who doesn’t love the smell of a bonfire wafting up into the starry skies? It creates an inviting atmosphere where everyone can gather, stay warm and make s’mores! Just be sure to check municipality bylaws when it comes to the regulations around wood, propane or gas-powered fire pits.

BUG SPRAY & SUN PROTECTION

Nothing ruins a party like an army of mosquitos or heat stroke! Be prepared by placing a basket with bug spray, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a few hats for guests to help themselves.

g

SIMPLE FOOD

The focus should be on foods that can be prepared or purchased ahead of time so that you can spend more time with guests. While BBQ and make ahead salads are typical, if you’re not hosting a full meal, a crostini bar is a fun way to keep food simple yet special. Try assembling an assortment of sweet and savory toppings like: jellies, dried fruits, tapenades, chutneys, bruschetta, cured meats and cheeses.

BEVERAGES

Keep guests cool by setting up a self serve station. Fill a cooler with ice and individual serving size beverages (and don’t forget the water). How about setting up a lemonade station for the kids? If you like, you can include some options for adults to customize their own “spiked lemonade” with flavoured vodkas, gin or even peach schnapps.

GAME & ACTIVITY CENTRE

People are more likely to toss a frisbee, swing a hula or play some cards if it’s within easy reach. Try setting up a few lawn games and fun items to keep little ones (and grown-ups) entertained.

Now that you’re ready to move the party outside, let’s make the best of the current situation; unite where we can and focus on the joy!

S’MORES STATION

What’s a summer party without s’mores? Try using Nutella and peanut butter in lieu of breaking up hard chocolate pieces. These spreads instantly make the smore’s gooey and rich. For an extra treat try it with BOTH peanut butter and Nutella – it’s like having a Reese’s peanut butter cup!

Let me make your move stress free.

My Favourite Things

Baby Snuggles

“In December of 2019, I became a momma to my little lady Lyla Rosabelle. It is the hardest and best thing I have ever had the privilege of doing. Even on the hardest of ‘toddler tantrum’ days, baby snuggles make it all worth it. She is my inspiration for absolutely everything I do.”

Jewellery Design

“I have the best job in the world. Working with beautiful gems and precious metals to create pieces that speak to a person’s character, life and style is one of the most rewarding things…and I get to experience that daily. I truly believe that jewellery is an individual thing, it is meant to be personal, personalized and enjoyed.”

Home Decor

“I believe that creating the life you want to live starts in your home. Cultivating a culture of creativity, organization, tranquility, revitalization, or whatever you desire for your life, all starts there. Combining pieces of your family, your purpose, your style and doing it in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and functional is one of my passions.”

Barre

Jessica Wharram Wharram’s Jewellery

Slow Sunday mornings

“A restful morning, with the largest cup of coffee known to man, a homemade breakfast and my planner is my favourite way to both end and start my week. I subscribe to Sunday as a day of rest, but I also like to set the tone and my intentions for the rest of the week that follows.”

26 | Southpoint Living

Fashion

“Fashion is something that has always intrigued me. It is so incredibly representative of who a person is and the things that they put the most stock into. I adore that we all get to make our own rules and be entirely true to ourselves.”

Wine

“As a single mom of a toddler, I belive in wine as a necessity of mere survival. But I also believe in the culture surrounding it. Good friends at a winery on a sunny Saturday afternoon, or a glass of red wine while preparing dinner. We are so blessed to live in an area so abundant with incredible wineries.”

Women are flocking to barre because they want to be willowy but not fragile, toned but not tiny, muscular but not masculine. They understand that the perfect body is one that is healthy. -Misty Copeland

Fresh Blooms

“Fresh flowers every week is a concept I believe in wholeheartedly. I believe in setting an atmosphere in one’s home - one that is inviting, peaceful and yet full of life. Flowers do this in the most beautiful way. They can be sophisticated and formal, lively and bohemian or even timeless and tranquil.“

Skincare Rooted In Kindness Why a local entrepreneur felt compelled to start her own skincare brand Most people become entrepreneurs because they are trying to solve a problem, and that’s exactly what prompted Harrow resident Sarah Battersby to start her eco-luxury skincare brand State of Kind. After years of trying to treat her inflamed skin, Sarah realized the products she was using were doing more harm than good. “Through a lot of researching, I discovered the trendy 10-step skincare routine I was following was inadvertently damaging my skin, and the planet,” Sarah explains. It was while working as Medical Division Director at Aphria that Sarah began to understand the benefits of CBD and its potential to soothe and heal skin ailments, so she started searching for a CBD skincare solution that could help her. But when she couldn’t find a product that suited what she was looking for, she enlisted the help of clean beauty scientists and medical experts to develop State of Kind. “I set out to create a skincare brand that would enable people to do more for their skin, with less,” Sarah explains. “I wanted to provide a skincare solution that could be trusted and that reflects the best of CBD science and exceptionally clean skincare.” Prior to launching State of Kind, Sarah found that many questionable ingredients were being included in skincare products due to a lack of regulation. 28 | Southpoint Living

In Canada, there are approximately 500 banned ingredients and in Europe there are more than 1300 banned ingredients, while the United States has only 11 ingredients that are banned from beauty products. State of Kind contains 100% natural ingredients and has a list of more than 2800 banned ingredients. Sarah Battersby, founder of State of Kind

“Safety and efficacy are extremely important to me,” Sarah says. “I want our consumers to feel safe and confident that they can trust we’ll only ever include ingredients that are biocompatible, meaning your skin can recognize and benefit from the ingredient.” After more than two years in development, State of Kind launched in the United States earlier this year with plans to enter the Canadian market soon. State of Kind’s debut product is Kindly Restore, a sleep concentrate that has already garnered attention from major media outlets including Beauty Independent and Who What Wear. Additional State of Kind products are currently in development. As a result of Sarah’s passion for clean, conscious living, State of Kind uses glass bottles for their packaging and produces their products at an eco-conscious manufacturing facility.

Kindly Restore

In addition to making products that are kind to both skin and the environment, Sarah also founded State of Kind based on the philosophy that using skincare should be more than just applying product; it should be treated as an opportunity to pause and do something kind for yourself. “I think we get so caught up in what we’re ‘supposed to’ care about that we neglect to sit with ourselves for a few minutes to reflect, re-prioritize, and realign.”

Life Lessons Learned From The Lens Of Our Littlest Learners by Mona Taouil We don’t just teach kids. We actually learn much from them. Often during challenging times, looking for wisdom and direction become a focus and goal. Young people - our children - possess unlimited potential in offering us adults opportunities for healing during troubled times by actually anchoring us. They have the power to ground us, in our adult troubles, in the literal here and now, and more importantly within the context of our purpose, our reasons, our WHY... by simply being in the presence of their valuable company. As easily as observing a child at their natural play is, it can often lead us to pivotal moments of wonder, of awe, and allows us to gain great insight not only about the child but also about life in general.

Having contributed much to pedagogy, education systems and structures as well as having grown professionally and personally myself over the course of my professional career, I’d be remiss if I didn’t proudly state that it’s the actual kids who have an abundance of wisdom to share and from whom we can learn the most about what really matters. While it is so true kids can say the darndest things, I have come to know that if you are truly open to learning from them, they need not even say a word yet they could teach us so much, including the following which are some favourites, from the lens of a child:

1. Sometimes in the middle of our work when

I get a short break to run, walk, or play, I feel more energized and feel more ready to continue on.

For this educator and school principal with over 23 years in education, even during our most difficult days the classrooms call my name.

2. Singing and music can make even the hardest jobs fun!

For me, walking into our kindergarten or grade 8 classrooms (now a virtual walk into their Google classrooms! ) often provide me with relieving moments of instant happiness, serenity and a quick reminder of my own and our collective WHY.

work, my gifts, my talents and stop to ask me questions about it, it shows me they care and makes me want to learn and do even more.

Getting back to the WHY of doing something, is not only helpful but critical, especially during challenging times. 30 | Southpoint Living

3. When I see and hear others talk about my

4. At times, I need a safe spot - a corner, or

an area where you can leave me be please especially if I’m struggling or having a hard time. I sometimes need just 10 minutes and I’ll be okay to rejoin the group.

5. Just because I’m quiet doesn’t mean I don’t know the answers - sometimes I’d just rather let others speak. I’m still learning, and this is okay.

6. You can have more than one best friend. But everyone needs one. 7. It takes just one brave person to make a

mean person stop what they’re doing.

8. Breaking big jobs down into small steps

helps me start the job, and be more careful in my thinking.

9. When you capture a living thing, even though you wish you could keep it, sometimes the best thing to do for it is to let it go. 10. When I’m asked a really difficult question

it really helps if I rehearse my answer out loud first. Other people like to draw or sketch it out first. Both help!

11. Remember your healthy snacks- they help you to think more clearly.

12. Even the hardest thing ever doesn’t seem so bad once it’s done. Get it done, or maybe get help getting it done. 13. If someone is really hurting, you should bring them to someone who can help. Hopefully these life lessons through the lens of our youngest remind us to learn every day, to not give up, and to adopt a hopeful and faith-filled spirit of awe and wonder at all blessings around us. Don’t forget to stop, watch, learn and grow, and remember that our own learning and living just may be inspired by the youngest in the playgrounds of our lives!

When it comes to vision problems, early detection can improve the chances of correcting any issues. But with children, it can be hard to know when something is wrong. Here are some signs that your child may be having vision problems: • Squinting, which can be a sign of compensating for poor vision. • Sitting too close to the television or holding a tablet screen close to the face. • Covering or shutting one eye. • Rubbing eyes due to visual fatigue and not general fatigue. • Pulling toys or other objects closer. • Head tilting, which could be a signal that vision may be better in one eye than the other. • Inability to make steady eye contact or track an object in an infant older than three months of age. • Crossed or misaligned eyes after age four months. • Children who are easily distracted in learning situations or have difficulty paying attention may be losing interest due to trouble with their vision. If you think your child may be experiencing problems with their vision, make them an appointment to see an optometrist. The Ontario Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their first eye exam at 6 months, again between ages 2 to 3, and every year after that. 32 | Southpoint Living

COPING WITH

STRESS

DURING UNCERTAIN TIMES Stress can affect people’s lives at any moment. Some say that a certain measure of stress can be a good thing that pushes individuals to try their best to overcome obstacles. However, chronic stress is potentially dangerous for the mind and body. Pandemic stress mixed with existing stress may require additional coping techniques. Turn negative thinking into positive thinking The occasional pep talk can help people manage their stress. Rather than saying “Everything is going wrong,” tell yourself “I can handle this, I have done it before.” Find the silver lining in situations and they may not feel so stressful. Take things one step at a time Getting ahead of yourself by looking too far into the future can compound stress. Focus on the here and now. Make to-do lists and take situations as they come day by day or hour by hour. Situations are often fluid, so worrying about something that is weeks away is often a waste of time.

Exercise regularly Exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Physical activity can release your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries. Exercise can also mimic the effects of stress, helping to condition the body to its effects and buffer the cardiovascular, digestive and immune systems from negative effects.

Don’t drown in perfectionism Trying to be mistake-free can trigger anxiety and stress. Being perfect is impossible and everyone makes mistakes. And while making mistakes can lead to growth and experience, perfectionism may staunch growth because a person is too afraid to take chances. Not every decision you make will be ideal, but each is a learning experience.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TICKS AND

LYME DISEASE

Ticks are common in our area and it’s important to protect yourself against them when spending time outdoors. While some ticks are a mere nuisance, the blacklegged tick is of concern as it can spread the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Public Health Ontario has identified our community as a risk area for Lyme disease, so it’s important to understand what Lyme disease is and how you can protect yourself from exposure to ticks. The following information is courtesy of The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. What is Lyme disease and what are the symptoms of Lyme disease? Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread through the bite of a blacklegged tick. Early symptoms of Lyme disease usually occur within one to two weeks, but can occur as soon as three days or as long as a month, after being bitten by an infected tick. Symptoms may include: • fever • headache • muscle and joint pains • fatigue (tiredness)

• numbness or tingling • swollen lymph nodes • skin rash that looks like a red bull’s eye

Who is at risk of Lyme disease? Anyone can get Lyme disease, but people who spend more time outdoors are at higher risk. Where are blacklegged ticks found? Ticks are often found in the woods and the edge area between lawns and woods. Ticks can also be carried around by animals into yards, gardens and into houses. How to protect yourself from ticks: • Use insect repellent • Avoid walking in tall grass and stay on the centre of paths. • Cover up. Wear long- sleeved shirts and pants. • Wear light coloured clothing to spot ticks easily. • Tuck your pants into your socks and wear closed toed shoes. • Do a full body check on yourself, children and pets after being outdoors. • Shower within 2 hours of being outdoors. • Put your clothes into a dryer on high heat (at least 60 minutes) to kill any possible ticks • Put a tick collar on your pets. Blacklegged tick • Keep grass in your yard short.

For more information visit wechu.org

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BITTEN BY A TICK

• Remove the tick as soon as possible. The

bacteria are most likely to be transmitted after the tick has been attached to you for 24 hours or more. • You can remove ticks by using tweezers or a tick key. Do not remove the tick with your fingers. • Pull the tick gently outwards and don’t twist. If you twist, mouthparts may get left behind. • Once the tick is removed, clean the area with soap and water. • If you have any symptoms or health concerns after a tick bite, consult a health care provider as soon as possible. • If you are able to take a picture of the tick, upload the photo to etick.ca and they will confirm what type of tick it is.
