Dear Community,
Dear Community,
In May, Erie Shores HealthCare welcomed the arrival of our temporary mobile MRI unit and recently announced that we have begun patienttesting. The unit will bring advanced diagnostic abilities to our hospital and alleviate regional MRI wait times ahead of the completion of our permanent MRI Suite.
The Ministry of Health will cover operation costs of the MRI, and it is up to us (Erie Shores Health Foundation) through the generosity of our community to purchase the physical machine and make the facility upgrades required to house it.
With the generous donations from Sun-Brite and Unico, and other individuals and organizations within our community, we are excited to share that the physical MRI machine has been completely funded. We are very grateful for the community’s synergic response to this life-changing project thus far.
The remainder of the MRI project funding is needed to complete our permanent MRI Suite as it requires high-level, specialized renovations so that we can safely and effectively operate the technology.
The MRI Suite will allow us to engage advanced technology in our MRI scans, facilitate the movement of inpatients for the ease of our patients and staff, ensure optimal patient comfort, and secure MRI permanently within our hospital.
Though we are not there yet, we are one step closer. We need the support of our community to bring the project in its entirety to life. Each and every donation toward this project is a significant contribution to advancing patient care and has a profound impact on our community as a whole.
For more information on the project and to find out how else you can donate today, please do not hesitate to contact our dedicated team.
We will continue to provide project updates as we progress.
Sincerely,
Penny Bellhouse Executive Director, Erie Shores Health Foundation

Floral flavours like lavender, orange blossom and elderflower have become popular in food, especially in baking, because they provide a delicate and nuanced sensory experience that adds a refreshing and aromatic dimension to dishes. Above, the lemon lavender donut from Belamund Café in Leamington.

While I love beauty and buy new products on a regular basis, sometimes it can be nice to travel lightly. Here are some products that can help you be minimalistic in your beauty choices:
Katarina Ingratta @makeup__by__kat
I own an abundance of eyeshadow palettes that I really only end up using a handful of shades from. Lately I have been making the switch to eyeshadow sticks or single shadows. This eliminates the bulk from your makeup bag and is more practical for everyday use. Eyeshadow sticks also eliminate the messy fallout that normally happens with powder eyeshadow.
My go-to eyeshadow sticks are the Nudestix Magnetic eye colours. They are creamy and blendable yet set in place and last all day long. My favourite shades to use are “Nudity” & “Angel” on the lid and “Chocolate” on the lash line for a smudged eyeliner look. The Ombre Skin eyeshadows from Clarins are highly pigmented, blend effortlessly and are available in a beautiful selection of neutral shades.
If you’re looking to add a little bit of sparkle to your eye look, apply the Urban Decay Moondust eyeshadow in the shade “Space Cowboy”. It amplifies any eye look and makes it look like you put in so much more effort than you actually did.
I often travel with cream-based products as they are typically smaller, easier to take with you and less likely to break in your luggage. Nudestix blushes and bronzers have been a go-to of mine for a while now. The shades “Cherry Blossom Babe” and “Bohemian Rose” in the Nudies bloom collection are the perfect cool-toned pinks. If you prefer a more natural looking blush, reach for the shade “Sunkissed Pink” from the Nudies Matte blush collection. They are also the perfect multi-use product (see more on that below) as you can use them as your cheek, lip and eye colour. They also offer 3-piece mini travel sets with a variety of shades for you to try.
Opt for multi-use products wherever you can! I love using the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Perfector 4-in-1 Glow for a natural looking base. It illuminates, primes and evens out the overall skin tone. You can use it alone or apply it underneath your foundation for an added glow.
Self-tanning lotions and creams, as well as cosmetic bronzing powders, are the safest ways to achieve a sun-kissed glow. The key to getting even coverage and natural-looking results comes down to a few steps:
Tackle other beauty regimens prior to self-tanning.
Various treatments like shaving legs, getting a manicure or even touching up hair colour may require the use of products that can remove self-tanner.
Exfoliate the skin prior to applying self-tanners.
Self-tanner will come out darker in areas where the skin is thickest, so you will need to spend more time exfoliating on the elbows, knees, heels and ankles, where skin is the thickest. You will also need to moisturize these areas as well.
Work in sections (such as the legs, torso, then arms and hands).
Massage the product into the skin in a circular motion. This technique separates a professional-looking glow from a bad faux tan because it prevents weird creasing or marks from bending over with product on. Wash your hands after each section with soap and water to avoid orange palms.
Dab off any excess product.
Brush a slightly damp paper towel over knees, wrists, elbows, feet and ankles to pick up excess colour and eliminate unevenness.
Use product sparingly on the face.
Dab a dime-sized amount of product on areas that would tan naturally, such as the cheeks, the bridge of the nose and chin, then blend outward.
Allow product to dry and set according to the directions. Avoid making contact with water or getting dressed too soon. Avoid water for four to eight hours after applying product.
If you’d like to live a healthy, stimulating lifestyle, then Wildwood Golf & RV Resort is the place for you.
Our player-friendly executive style course features well-groomed fairways and greens as well as verdant grounds highlighted by lakes and bridges. The sense of home, community, health, and recreation are inspired by the beauty and tranquility of the resort.
Totalling 4350 yards, the course creates a scenic greenbelt as it rambles around the resort’s lush landscaped property.

Where should I splurge when designing and decorating my bedroom?
Your bedroom should feel like a personal sanctuary. Investing in key pieces can significantly enhance the comfort, style and functionality of your space. Here are the key areas where you should splurge:
The bed is the heart of your bedroom. Investing in a high-quality mattress is important as it directly impacts your sleep quality and well-being. Pair it with a beautiful bed frame that complements your bedroom’s aesthetic. Luxurious bedding can transform your sleep experience. Egyptian cotton or linen sheets, a plush duvet and supportive pillows not only enhance comfort but also add a touch of elegance to your space.
Lighting plays a critical role in creating ambiance and functionality in your bedroom. Splurge on lighting solutions, including an elegant chandelier or pendant light for a statement piece, bedside table lamps for reading, and adjustable accent lights to highlight artwork or architectural features.
A well-organized bedroom promotes a sense of calm and relaxation. Invest in custom storage solutions such as built-in wardrobes, beautiful dressers and cleverly designed nightstands. These tailored pieces not only maximize space but also provide a seamless, integrated look.
Quality window treatments are essential for privacy, light control, and adding a finishing touch to your bedroom. They soften the space and add a layer of sound absorption. Consider investing in custom drapes or highend blinds that offer functionality and style. Layering with sheer curtains can create a luxurious, hotel-like feel.
Splurging on art and accessories allows you to infuse your personality into your bedroom. Choose a few statement pieces, such as a large artwork above the bed, elegant mirrors or unique sculptures. These items can serve as focal points, making your bedroom truly unique.
While often overlooked, flooring is a critical component of bedroom design. Investing in high-quality hardwood as well as durable and stylish area rugs can elevate the overall aesthetic and comfort of your space. The right flooring not only feels good underfoot but also contributes to the room’s acoustics and warmth
If you have the space, creating a small seating area can add functionality and a layer of charm to your bedroom. Splurge on a comfortable chair or a stylish loveseat, paired with a chic side table. This nook can serve as a reading spot, a place for morning coffee or simply a cozy retreat.
Investing wisely in key areas of your bedroom will create a space that is not only beautiful but also comfortable and functional. Prioritize high-quality essentials such as the bed, lighting and storage, while adding personal touches with art and accessories. By focusing your splurge in these areas, you’ll create a bedroom that truly feels like the sanctuary it should be.

Incorporating the right elements can transport your home into a coastal paradise.
• Begin by selecting a soothing colour palette inspired by the coastal environment. Opt for soft, breezy hues such as shades of blue, aqua, seafoam green and sandy beige.
• Complement these colours with crisp white accents to mimic the sun-bleached effect of coastal architecture.
• Consider incorporating pops of coral, turquoise or sunny yellow to add visual interest and evoke the vibrant beachside atmosphere.
• Embrace the textures and materials found in nature to create an authentic coastal feel.
• Choose furniture and flooring made from light-toned woods like oak or pine.
• Incorporate natural fibres such as jute, sisal or seagrass for rugs, curtains and upholstery.
• Integrate wicker or rattan furniture pieces to add a touch of coastal charm and a relaxed, organic aesthetic.
• Maximize natural light by using sheer curtains or blinds that allow sunlight to filter through.
• Consider installing large windows or skylights to create a bright and airy atmosphere.
• Opt for lightweight, flowy fabrics to enhance the breezy feel of the space.
• Use mirrors strategically to reflect light and create an illusion of spaciousness.
• Hang framed artwork featuring seascapes, sailboats or marine life to bring the ocean indoors.
• Display seashells, driftwood or coral as decorative accents or focal points.
• Incorporate striped patterns reminiscent of beach umbrellas or sailcloth into throw pillows, curtains or linens.
• Incorporate weathered or distressed metal finishes that mimic the effects of saltwater and sea air.
Let the warm hues and ethereal glow of a summer sunset inspire your walls at home.

Ah, summer — the season of sunshine, picnics and, of course, delicious wine! Living in Southwestern Ontario’s wine country certainly has its perks. With an abundance of local options at our fingertips, planning a summer wine tasting party can be a fun event for both the wine aficionado and the casual enthusiast.
Here are some tips to make your wine tasting soirée a hit:
ENJOY AL FRESCO
Take advantage of the summer breeze and scenic views by hosting your tasting outdoors. Create an inviting atmosphere with cozy seating, soft lighting (using outdoor fairy lights, lanterns and candles), and of course, some mood-setting tunes. Pro tip: set a basket out with extra items your guests may need like bug spray, blankets, sunglasses, etc.
EMBRACE LOCAL FLAVOURS
With over 18 wineries in the area, there’s lots to choose from! Your tasting could include one type of wine (ex. Pinot Grigio) from various local makers. Or you could choose one winery and explore their range of offerings. Either way, taking advantage of the rich tapestry of wines available here will add a unique touch to your tasting experience - and you might even discover a new favourite!
Set the tone for your tasting with a theme. It could be based on a specific region (hello, Tuscany!), grape variety (Chardonnay showdown, anyone?), or even a colour palette like Rosé for a visually stunning experience.
Organize a blind tasting challenge to test everyone’s palate. Encourage guests to bring their favourite bottle to share. As the host, you put each bottle in a brown bag and number them. Then, take turns serving the wines for everyone to sample and ultimately vote on which one reigns supreme.
Enhance the tasting experience by pairing each wine with complementary bites. Think cheese and charcuterie boards, fresh fruits, artisanal chocolates and assorted nuts. Pro tip: Provide palate cleansers like water and plain crackers to reset the tastebuds between sips. And if you need a little help with what to serve with your wine, a quick internet search will provide you with lots of options.
Who says you need to host a wine tasting party at home? With all these fantastic wineries close by, consider arranging a vineyard tour for your guests to experience firsthand the magic behind the bottle and sample the wines on site.
As always, your job as host extends to the safety and well-being of your guests. Be sure to provide water and snacks to keep everyone feeling good and hydrated. Arrange for transportation or encourage guests to spend the night if they’ve had a little too much. You want to be sure everyone has a good time and gets home safely.
As I focus on a new chapter of life, recently engaged and expecting my first child, I do often think about my previous chapter where I spent more time as an avid runner, marathoner and for a short stint, triathlete. During the peak of my training days, I mostly ran in the Leamington area with the occasional run in Kingsville. Most people in our area would agree the best place to run and I would attest to it, would be Point Pelee! Any length worked but especially when I had to do my longer runs 18km, 25km or 28km. During a hot and humid Leamington summer, I would strap on my water and sport drink belt and head to the park. The perpetual shade, occasional breeze, fun path and safe environment away from vehicles check so many boxes. During these runs I would cross paths with other runners, walkers, hikers, cyclists and active people in our community enjoying what the park has to offer. We are lucky to have this national park so close to home.
Being an avid runner for many years, I have had the opportunity to run many of our local trails. I’m also part of a local running group called Shores of Erie Running Club where every week we pick a new route to run or walk and a nearby restaurant to celebrate afterward. I recently ran through Kennedy Woods. I really enjoyed the beautiful woods that offered a quiet and peaceful atmosphere throughout my run.
I have had the privilege of running in various locations across the globe, and I must say that our community is truly fortunate to have the magnificent new boardwalk by the waterfront. Its connection to Seacliff Park has transformed our running experience. Kudos to the municipality’s leadership for envisioning and completing this project! This boardwalk is the epitome of what makes living in Leamington so wonderful - it offers a fantastic way to embrace and enjoy all the greatness this town has to offer.
In Wheatley, Two Creeks Conservation Area is a great spot if you’re into trail running or mountain biking. If you’re walking the perimeter of the town, the Grant Bowman Trail offers a more scenic route to get you from one bridge to the other. Wheatley Provincial Park is my go-to place for a peaceful run, walk and/or bike ride, providing everything that nature has to offer. The nice thing about the park is that you can change up your route and/or distance each time and see something different every run. The new Arboretum/Learning Trail behind the arena is a cool place to visit and you can even stop to do some exercises on the equipment.
Summer is the perfect time to embrace the great outdoors and create lasting memories with children. Here are some fun ways to enjoy the outdoors with kids this summer:
• Camp under the stars: Pitch a tent in your backyard or plan a family camping trip to a nearby campground. Teach your kids basic camping skills, such as setting up a tent, building a fire and cooking outdoors.
• Explore nature trails: Embark on a hiking adventure at a local park. Encourage your kids to observe plants, animals, and insects along the way, making it a fun and educational experience.
• Create a backyard water park: Transform your backyard into a mini water park. Set up a sprinkler, inflatable pool or slip and slide. Add water balloons, water guns and water-themed games for an extra splash of excitement.
• Organize a scavenger hunt: Unleash your kids’ inner adventurers by organizing a scavenger hunt. Create a list of items they need to find in your backyard, local park or nearby forested area.
• Have a sports day: Organize a family sports day with a variety of outdoor games. Set up a friendly competition with games like soccer, badminton, frisbee, golf or relay races.
• Set up an outdoor art studio: Encourage your children’s creativity by setting up an outdoor art studio. Provide them with art supplies like paints, brushes and canvases. Let them explore their imagination while enjoying the fresh air and natural surroundings.
• Go on a bike adventure: Cycling is a fantastic way to explore your neighbourhood or nearby parks. Take your kids on a bike adventure, discovering new paths and hidden gems along the way.
• Plan a picnic adventure: Pack a delicious picnic and head to a nearby park, beach or simply your backyard. Have children help prepare and pack the food and items you will bring.
An ongoing journey
I am continually exploring new health and wellness practices. From cold plunges and supplements to podcasts, meditation, retreats and connecting with like-minded people, the journey is ongoing. A current focus of mine is starting Pink Pilates Plus+ with Maribel Abraham to share healthy, easy recipes that complement your fitness journey.
A cherished escape
I have always been an avid reader, devouring novel after novel. Getting lost in characters and stories helps me relax and manage stress. Reading for 20 minutes before bed always ensures a better night’s sleep for me.
My greatest blessings Avaya and Gray are my greatest blessings. My most important role. Being a healthy, strong mom is the reason behind everything I do. Having children later in life means I need to stay fit to keep up with them and be there for them.
Leah Mancini OwnerofPinkPilates
Travelling to new places has always been a significant part of my life. I’ve lived in Australia and visited Fiji, Bali, South Africa, Europe, and many places in Canada. A particularly special trip this past summer allowed Avaya and Gray to meet their great Nonna and extended family in the small town of Poggio Sannita, Italy.
A daily highlight
My favourite part of my day is when my children, Avaya and Gray, along with my husband Gabe and I, sit down for dinner together. Sharing a meal while discussing the main events of our day helps us reconnect amidst our busy lives. We always ask Avaya and Gray if their day was good, bad, scary or funny, and then they explain their experiences.
A life-changing practice
Pilates has transformed my life in numerous positive ways. Now in my 40s, I have never felt stronger. This practice enhances mobility and strengthens all the major muscle groups in a balanced manner, with a key focus on the deep muscles of the core. The integration of movement and breath keeps me grounded in the present moment, leaving me feeling energized and rejuvenated after every class.
Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I was blessed to spend nearly 18 years with the WECDSB, educating students from kindergarten through grade 6. Today, I continue to pursue this passion through Pink Pilates and the Pilates classes that I teach.
Jeff Wiper has shifted his creative skills from culinary masterpieces to writing a book inspired by his time spent on Pelee Island. Wiper, a local chef and Leamington native, has teamed up with Kingsville artist Carolyn Hardy to create The Birds of Pelee Island, the first in a series of books inspired by Wiper’s personal experiences and childhood memories.
“I have been coming to Pelee since 1983 when my parents were literally warming my bottle on the engine of our boat while crossing the lake,” Wiper explains. “I spent summer vacation on Pelee for the majority of my childhood, spent some great years in high school getting up to islandstyle good times and then lived there full time through my college summers, bartending at the Westview Tavern.”
Grateful for his time spent at his family cottage growing up, Wiper has now planted his own roots on the island as he and his wife Melissa have opened two businesses there. The One of A Kind Pelee Arts & Gifts store showcases over 35 local artists, and their Coneheads Ice Cream & Mini Golf features a food trailer, ice cream shop and recently added mini golf course.
Wiper has worked in the hospitality industry for more than 25 years as a chef, manager and restaurateur, and now serves as a hospitality consultant. While he has writing experience related to his professional work, like blogs, menus and recipes, this is his first published book of this type.
When it came to the illustrations for the book, surrealist artist Carolyn Hardy was an easy choice for Wiper.
“Carolyn is one of the artists that we host in our shop,” Wiper said. “She has original family ties to Pelee and she has lived on Pelee on and off for years. When attempting to highlight specific scenes on Pelee within my writing, I knew that Carolyn could take those words and accurately recreate those island scenes. This project would not have been complete without Carolyn as my creative partner, sharing her artistic interpretations.”
The Birds of Pelee Island is the first in a series that Wiper and Hardy will be teaming up on, with the second book already in production. Titled “The Enchanted Island Juicery”, Wiper says book two is a kids version/take on the “much enjoyed by adults” Pelee Island Winery.
“I am very excited to continue sharing the Island and my Island memories with locals and visitors alike,” Wiper said.
The Birds of Pelee Island is available on the island at the One of a Kind Pelee store and Pelee Island Artworks, and it’s available online at oneofakindpelee.com, Amazon.ca and Amazon.com
Leamington native Emily Dunn moved to Dublin, Ireland in January 2023 where she serves as Front Office Supervisor at Motel One. Here are her recommendations for anyone visiting Dublin:
One of my favourite areas in Dublin is Drury Street and South William Street. There are loads of great coffee, eats and drinks in this area. Not to mention the shopping, including one of Europe’s oldest city markets. When there’s a sunny day in Dublin (believe it or not they happen more often than you’d think), these streets fill up with people enjoying the sun and a few bevys. The atmosphere and the craic (social activity) are unmatched. Kaph is my go-to for coffee, Loose Canon for wine and cheese, or Grogans for a fantastic pint.
Named one of the top experiences in Europe for a reason. The brewery features a truly unique, immersive experience that even the non beer drinkers can enjoy. Walk through the entire Guinness process in the old factory where you can learn how to pour a perfect pint. After completing the tour, head up to the Gravity Bar, which has a panoramic view of Dublin city that can’t be beat!
This is my favourite place to be on a rainy day in Dublin. The gallery boasts some fantastic pieces and hosts free guided tours weekly. Each wing has a different time period, so you can focus on what you love. The National Portrait Collection has become a new favourite of mine. The gallery is free and runs off of generous donations from its many visitors. Make sure to pop into the gift shop on your way out!
The legendary Trinity College is a beautiful campus to walk around and explore. Featuring one of the oldest and most iconic libraries in the world, it’s stunning dark wood creates a mood found nowhere else. Most recently they’ve added a virtual experience about the library and Book of Kells, which takes you into the heart of some of the books on the shelves and the journey the Book of Kells has taken over the centuries.
While many people love to travel, the rising costs of pretty much everything these days is preventing many people from taking vacations. Consider these tips that allow savvy travellers to explore the world without breaking the bank:
• Avoid checked-bag fees. Packing light can help travelers avoid paying extra for checked baggage or overage fees on heavy suitcases. Maximize space in carry-ons so you won’t incur higher costs at the airport.
• Use a flight search aggregator. Sites like Google Flights will pull together several flight options based on the criteria entered. This helps customers figure out when and where they can get the best deals on flights.
• Travel off-season. Avoiding peak seasons for certain desirable destinations will help travelers save on everything from transportation to accommodations. Furthermore, you won’t have to battle crowds when you go off-season.
• Travel at off-peak times. Similar to traveling offseason, try booking trips earlier in the week, as Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday could translate to better deals on flights and hotel rooms.
• Utilize a mileage credit card. Credit cards often have built-in perks. Some give cash-back on a percentage of money spent while others may offer airline mileage or discounts on hotels. For those who will be spending anyway, it can pay to use a card that will reward on travel.
• Sign up for a loyalty program. Hotel chains may waive certain fees for loyalty members and programs often include perks like extended check-in or checkout times, meal vouchers or discounted rates.
What they are and how they can improve your health
by Tara Omstead R.S.W., M.S.W., B.S.W., B.A.
The smile of a child passing you in the grocery. Your favourite song on the radio playing at just the right moment. The touch of your furry friend as they hum snuggled on your lap. The smell of dinner preparations when you return home, happy you have someone to come home to. Your first ice cream cone of the summer season, bringing back nostalgic feelings. These are glimmers, each honing in on one of the five senses.
A glimmer is a new term in psychology referring to a small moment or comfort that sparks joy and helps your nervous system feel at ease. Individually, these moments are not grand or life-changing, but added together create a meaningful, joyful life.
Glimmers don’t necessarily just show up. We have to be on the lookout for them. A negative mindset can squash any chance of seeing the sparkly moments of your day-to-day.
I recently lost my grandmother, which has led to my reflection on the importance of positivity. My mother often called her the “eternal optimist”. Despite going through various life challenges, such as the loss of a child, she didn’t let it bitter her heart or hinder her from seeing the good life had to offer. She persevered with a positive mindset.
To me, her secret wasn’t rose-coloured glasses or the repression of uncomfortable feelings, but her collection of a lifetime of glimmers. She indulged in the little pleasures from a steamy bubble bath to a cozy home filled with her favourite things.
My grandma was a writer and spoke in poetry describing common, seemingly ordinary moments. It was not only comforting to hear her speak this way but it also taught me an important lesson: You don’t need big moments, achievements or flashy possessions to be content. Look where you are and what you have. Savour and enjoy.
You can think of glimmers as the opposite of triggers. A trigger is a stimulus that elicits a painful memory. It can be a sound, sight, smell, physical sensation or even a specific time of day or year. The same can be said for a glimmer, however, having the opposite emotional impact.
The term was introduced by social worker Deb Dana in her book The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy: Engaging the Rhythm of Regulation. She wrote, “[g]limmers refer to small moments when our biology is in a place of connection and regulation, which cues our nervous system to feel safe or calm… these are micro moments that begin to shape our system in very gentle ways.”
Tara Omstead Counsellor & Registered Social Worker @counsellingwithtara
Unlike glimmers, triggers cue our bodies to feel threatened, heightening our alertness and senses, preparing our bodies for “flight or fight.” It is our body’s attempt to be safe. Glimmers, on the other hand, cue our bodies feel calm and safe, preparing us to “rest and digest.” When we are in this state of homeostasis, we are at our best. Our bodies can function in a healthy way. When the body taps into its parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest), your heart rate lowers, and your body increases the rate of digestion. Keep in mind that the sympathetic nervous system (flight or fight) isn’t all bad. It is needed when your safety and survival are at risk. However, that state can strain body systems when it is active for too long. Given the fast-pace culture and piling demands individuals experience today in North America, it is assumed our sympathetic nervous systems are on overdrive.
When you make a point of seeing a micro moment of joy, you are also practicing gratitude. Research shows that practicing daily gratitude improves mood, health, how we deal with adversity and helps us to build strong relationships. In short, appreciating and embracing the “little things” is actually good for your health and we have science to prove it!
I encourage you to seek out the glimmers in your life. I promise you they are there! When you notice something good, involve all the senses to fully immerse yourself in the joyful experience. You are catching a glimmer by being mindful in the moment. That is the key: being mindful and being present.
A cold plunge is a type of hydrotherapy that involves immersing oneself in cold water for a short period of time. Dating back centuries, this invigorating ritual has been embraced by cultures around the world for its numerous benefits to both the body and mind, incuding the following:
Cold water immersion stimulates blood flow and constricts blood vessels. This can enhance circulation throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to various organs and tissues.
Cold water therapy has anti-inflammatory effects that can help alleviate muscle soreness and joint pain. It can also assist in reducing swelling and inflammation associated with injuries.
Cold plunges can activate the body’s immune response, leading to increased production of white blood cells and improved overall immune function. This may help in preventing illnesses and enhancing the body’s ability to fight infections.
Cold water immersion after intense physical activity can facilitate muscle recovery by reducing muscle damage and inflammation. It can also help restore muscle glycogen levels and alleviate exerciseinduced fatigue.
Cold plunges cause the release of adrenaline and endorphins, leading to increased mental alertness and improved mood. The shock of cold water can also stimulate the nervous system, promoting wakefulness and mental clarity.
Cold water exposure tightens the pores and can promote healthier skin by reducing acne, redness, and puffiness. It can also enhance hair health by sealing the hair cuticles, resulting in shinier and smoother hair.
Cold water immersion triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol, but it also activates the body’s relaxation response afterward. This can help reduce stress levels, improve mood and promote a sense of well-being.
Studies have found the ideal water temperature for a cold plunge to be between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit)

After being born and raised hundreds of miles away from each other — one in Montreal and the other in Leamington — two accomplished musicians each took pathways that spanned the globe with their journeys eventually converging.
Mary Newland left Leamington in 1972 after graduating from Leamington District Secondary School. The then-17-year-old was eager to pursue a career in music and headed to Los Angeles, which was the place to be during that time frame if you wanted work in the music business.
After working in the family business growing up — her grandfather founded Newland’s Flowers in 1933 — Mary put the greenhouses and flower business behind her to find her way in her chosen career path. And find her way she did.
After a considerable amount of time working with the Beach Boys, Mary eventually ventured out and found success with her own band in the L.A. club scene during the mid-to-late ’70s.
When her manager decided she needed a record producer, Mary was introduced to Richard Baker, another Canadian making his way in the music business in Los Angeles.
For Richard, his musical life began at the age of three, when he studied classical music. At age seven, his piano/keyboard skills drew the attention of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra who he performed with as a guest and he played his first professional, paying gig at the age of 12.
Richard comes by his musical talent honestly, as his father was a part-time musician who had his own 18-piece big band, playing the music of the golden era. Richard was quick to learn those songs, many of which he still plays to this day.
After graduating from McGill University, Richard began toying with synthesizers, something that was then relatively new to the music business. He was able to create sounds he’d never heard before and began to get creative with those.
“I spent hours playing around with that thing,” he said.
He soon joined Gino Vanelli’s band, touring and recording with him until 1976, when he got work based on the recommendation of Herb Alpert and Quincy Jones — both of whom admired his keyboard and arrangement skills.
After a tour with Gary Wright of ‘Dream Weaver’ fame, in which they were double-billed with Peter Frampton, Richard moved on to perform with Leo Sayer and eventually auditioned for an opening with Santana in 1979.
After getting the call for Santana, he was very busy. There was plenty of touring and he played on two of Santana’s albums — Zebop and Shango.
Richard left Santana in 1983 and that’s when he met the girl from the Tomato Capital of Canada — Mary Newland. They started working together professionally and eventually that turned into a loving relationship and they’ve been together ever since.
The pair left L.A. in 2006 and returned to Richard’s hometown of Montreal, where they stayed until their 2014 relocation to Leamington.
Here, they continued to work on their music and play gigs as a duo, but eventually formed the Blue Bayou Band in 2017.
The full band performs 1970s music and plays professionally all over Southwestern Ontario, while Mary and Richard the duo still play smaller venues and perform all genres from Sinatra and Bennett to Lady Gaga.
They’ve found the local music scene to be alive and well here, and have plans to record a couple of records in their home studio — one with originals and the other with some of their favourite cover songs.
As for the future, Richard is still scoring TV shows and movies amid all the other daily life stuff they do and Mary says that as long as they can stand up and perform, they will keep on doing it.
“It’s great fun,” she says. “We love it.”
They can be seen quite often in many local music venues, including Thirteen at the Inn and Paglione Estate Winery — two of their favourite places to play.

As we gracefully age, it becomes increasingly important to maintain an active lifestyle that promotes physical and mental well-being. Swimming stands out as a highly beneficial activity for seniors because it offers a multitude of advantages that contribute to overall health and vitality, including the following:
Low-impact exercise: Swimming is a low-impact activity that puts minimal stress on joints. The buoyancy of water reduces the effects of gravity, providing a supportive environment that alleviates pressure on the body.
Heart health: Swimming is an excellent cardiovascular workout that helps strengthen the heart muscle and improve blood circulation.
Muscle strength: The resistance of water provides a natural form of resistance training, helping to build and tone muscles without the strain associated with traditional weight-bearing exercises.
Joint mobility and pain relief: The fluid movements involved in swimming help improve joint mobility and flexibility while providing gentle stretching to alleviate stiffness.
Balance and coordination: Swimming requires coordination of movements and balance control, which can help seniors improve their mobility and reduce the risk of falls.
Stress relief and mental well-being: The rhythmic movements and the sensation of floating in water can help seniors unwind, reduce anxiety and improve overall mood.
Improved lung capacity: Swimming involves controlled breathing techniques, which can help improve lung capacity and respiratory health.
Enhanced cognitive function: Engaging in regular physical exercise like swimming has been linked to improved cognitive function and a reduced risk of agerelated cognitive decline.
Social engagement: Joining a swimming group or participating in water aerobics classes provides seniors with an opportunity to socialize and build connections, combating feelings of loneliness and isolation.
