Bellies filled at Breakfast with Santa in Kingsville

Hungry families packed Lakeside Park Pavilion for three sold-out sessions of Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 14. Holding this in-person event for the first time since the pandemic, the Fantasy of Lights Committee was joined by the Optimist Club of Kingsville who generously provided the pancakes, sausages, juice and coffee.

“Our club supports the local youth and we really enjoy doing this for the community,” said Optimist Club Secretary Maria Edwards.

Proceeds from the event will be used to add to the Christmas light displays at the park and to help pay for other upcoming Fantasy of Lights events.

Efforts from the Optimists didn’t just end with breakfast as they also ran a Crafts with Santa event later in the day at the park.

Kingsville passes 3.61% increase

Kingsville town council has approved their 2025 Budget with a municipal tax increase of 3.61 per cent, which works out to approximately $74.54 for an average home in Kingsville.

The budget includes $4.5 million for road reconstruction and resurfacing, $1 million for bridge replacements and rehabilitations, $280,000 for sidewalk replacements, $450,000 for road

and bridge lifecycle reserves and $660,000 for repairs and renovations to existing facilities.

The last item will ensure that those facilities in question will remain viable for the future.

“I commend our finance and management teams for the significant effort in putting together this budget, and Council for their dedicated review and amendments,” said Kingsville’s Chief

Administrative Officer, John Norton. “The budget reflects our commitment to balancing fiscal responsibility with the current and future needs and aspirations of our community, ensuring that we continue to thrive and meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.”

Once the budget is updated, it will be posted on the town’s finance and budget page on kingsville.ca.

Leamington warns of door-to-door scammers

The Municipality of Leamington is warning residents about a scam involving individuals falsely claiming to represent the Municipality’s Water Services Department to gain access to homes under the pretense of conducting water meter inspections.

Residents have reported being contacted by these individuals, who do not represent the mu-

nicipality. Please note the following to help protect yourself:

• Municipal staff will never conduct water meter inspections without prior notice.

• Municipal employees will always wear official uniforms, carry proper identification and arrive in clearly marked municipal vehicles.

• If someone requests access to your home for

a water meter inspection, you are encouraged to contact the Municipality’s Water Services Department at 519-326-4454 to verify the visit.

The municipality has contacted the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) about this issue and encourages residents to report any suspicious activity to the OPP immediately.

“We take the safety and security of our residents very seriously,” said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “We are working with law enforcement to address this matter and want to ensure our community remains informed and vigilant.”

Leamington budget sees 4.7% increase

Leamington council has approved the 2025 Operating and Capital Budget, with an eye on the municipality’s commitment to community growth, infrastructure enhancement, and organizational excellence.

Budget deliberations took place on December 11 and 12 in council chambers.

The budget introduces a municipal tax levy increase, resulting in an additional $120.54 annually ($10.05 per month) for an average urban residential home assessed at $190,000. This increase consists of a 4% allocation for municipal services and a 0.7% adjustment to cover rising

Chatham-Kent

Following online community consultations and recent budget deliberation meetings, Chatham-Kent council recommended its first update to the 20242027 Multi-Year Budget.

The budget increase of 4.99% for 2025 includes investments in Chatham-Kent’s existing Municipal services at 1.88%. There is also an allotment of 2.35% being included for investment in social

Total expenditures are set at $105 million, with $55 million dedicated to capital projects and $50 million allocated for operating expenses.

Major 2025 capital initiatives include critical infrastructure improvements such as sewer separation projects, road reconstruction, a waterfront plaza, and enhanced watermain systems, all aimed at supporting sustainable growth and service delivery.

“The 2025 budget reflects our dedication to enhancing the quality of life for Leamington residents,” said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “By prioritiz-

ing strategic investments, we are ensuring that our community continues to grow and thrive, supported by modern infrastructure and robust municipal services.”

In addition to infrastructure projects, the budget supports key municipal programs including the Music Onthe42 Concert Series, Mill St. Markets, and Canada Day celebrations.

It also ensures continued investment in technological advancements, staffing, and process improvements to enhance service delivery.

issues. The 2025 budget update also includes $4,069,961 in infrastructure spending, which allows for increased spending on future improvements to Chatham-Kent’s infrastructure, such as roads, drains, bridges and recreation facilities.

This equates to an average annual increase of $176 for the average household with an assessment value of $176,200, or $100 per $100,000 of residential assessment value.

The 2.35% being allocated to investment in social issues will allow for the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to address the complex challenges of homelessness and housing costs, in the absence of financial support from upper levels of government.

Earlier this year, council endorsed recommendations to move forward

with replacing the existing emergency shelter on Murray St. with an Emergency Transitional Cabin program on Park St. at Hyslop St. in Chatham. Staff and council continue to make efforts to secure governmental funding to reduce the growing financial burden on Chatham-Kent taxpayers.

There are no closures to libraries, rural service centres, arenas or community supports in the recommended budget.

“Both Council and staff are putting in a great deal of effort to strategically balance inflation, societal challenges, and lack of upper-level government funding while ensuring infrastructure and services are maintained and improved for the residents of Chatham-Kent going forward,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff.

Faith, friends and family help ALS patient stay positive

Peggy and George Barrette feel grateful and blessed, despite a major health journey that has drastically changed their lives over the past 20 years.

The Leamington couple — parents to nine now-adult children — are challenged every day by George’s Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis from 2004.

But they face every day with a smile — and a few tears — knowing that their faith will get them through.

George is a popular sight around the south end of Leamington as he makes his way in and out of stores on that end of town. His wheelchair — the fourth provided by the ALS Society of Windsor-Essex County — is equipped to get him to wherever he wants to go.

And he’s grateful for that fourth wheelchair. Peggy says that the Society counts George as their longest-tenured client, and in a world where one wheelchair would probably last each patient, George has managed to get four — a feat not always accomplished by ALS patients.

That’s a testament to the fortitude of the former beef farmer and the deep faith shared by he and his wife.

His mornings started early and his days ran long on the farm and George was a robust man who could tackle the physical challenges of running a farm with the best of them.

He was also a hockey dad, whose dedication to getting his kids from their Staples farm to the Leamington arena and back while still maintaining a working farm, was a sight to behold.

When he started to ex-

perience some slurred speech and unexplained drooling in 2004, Peggy thought he’d maybe had a mini-stroke, but a trip to their family doctor soon led to a trip to a Windsor neurologist, who narrowed the diagnosis down to the dreaded disease that took the life of baseball’s Lou Gehrig so many years ago.

“When you have a huge support system, it means a lot.”
— Peggy Barrette

It was around that time that they were sent to London and were introduced to Dr. Michael Strong — a Leamington native himself — who is a leading expert in ALS research and treatment.

“What a wonderful human being,” Peggy says of Dr. Strong. “He really cares about his work.”

Long known as a disease that kills the vast majority of its patients within a couple of years, recent strides have been made in research of the disease.

Even though those strides were made well after George’s diagnosis and offer no advantages to him, George and Peggy are grateful for all of that extra, unexpected time.

“I thought I would be dead in two-and-ahalf years,” said George through his iPad. “I didn’t think I’d ever get to meet my grandchildren. Twenty years went by fast.”

George communicates through typing on the iPad, through an advanced program, then reads aloud what he types so that he can carry on regular conversations.

All of the technological advances have been a godsend for the couple.

“The ALS Society has

been wonderful and they’ve provided us with everything we need,” added Peggy. “Not just the equipment, but moral support too.”

After their diagnosis, Peggy and George participated in some studies to help doctors determine what works and what does not when it comes to ALS. These studies required frequent trips to London.

“We knew we wanted to help others afflicted with ALS,” she said.

When the couple decided in 2012 to sell the farm and move to a one-floor home in Leamington, they gathered the kids and had a family meeting — then they all pitched in to make it happen.

Two of their boys bought the farm together and run an excavating business from the property and everyone pitched in to help set up the new house to make things easier for mom and dad.

“When you have a huge support system, it means a lot,” says Peggy. “The biggest thing it gave us is hope.”

And hope is what they’ve got, but it doesn’t compare to their faith that God has a plan for them. While it may not be the plan they had originally dreamed of when they married almost 49 years ago, it’s still a plan and they trust the process.

“We just trust He has a reason for it,” she said. “You just trust that God has better reasons for the way your life is unfolding.”

Peggy says that George is quite popular in the grocery stores, where the employees and even customers, are helpful when he needs something off a shelf.

“He still looks through all the flyers the same as he always did,” she says.

“He loves to help in any way he can.”

That comment drew a big smile from George, who began typing on his iPad.

“People in the stores are very helpful,” he says. “I like a bargain.”

And it’s not just the people in the stores. George and Peggy find that the community has welcomed them with open arms.

“It’s like receiving a big hug,” they say.

They belong to St. Michael’s Parish and say prayer from everyone they know has helped them through these past 20 years.

“We have a faith community that supports us and we feel their love,” says Peggy. “Our strength doesn’t come from us, it comes from God.”

The Barrettes’ nine children have produced 16 grandchildren and George is close with all of them — something he didn’t imagine when he got his diagnosis.

He’s quick to bring up a family photo on his iPad, with all of those kids and grandkids gathered around he and Peggy. They often come by to help Mémé with Pépé and

love helping to get his boots off and make him comfortable.

George smiles at that notion, begins to tear up and then reverts right back to the smile. After all, he’s still here to enjoy them. And enjoy them, he does.

Christmas with Pavlo at The Bank Theatre

The Bank Theatre in Leamington is set to host a return engagement with Pavlo and his unique brand of world music and Christmas music on December 23.

Pavlo last graced The Bank Theatre stage late 2021 during the pandemic. Tickets for this show have been steadily purchased since September and are available to purchase now until sold out.

For being all instrumental, Pavlo’s Mediterranean music speaks for itself.

Over the span of his 20-year career, Pavlo, the internationally renowned, award-winning recording artist, performer and songwriter, has released 15 albums to include four PBS TV concert specials.

Born in Toronto to Greek parents, Pavlo has made a name for himself by offering a musical amalgam he simply calls “Mediterranean music” – a blend of Greek, flamenco, Latin and even Balkan flavours, wrapped in contemporary pop.

His music has taken him all around the world. Along the way he’s performed for royalty for the likes of Prince Charles, and worked and toured with artists such as José Feliciano, Jon Secada, Olivia Newton-John and The Tenors.

“The last time we had Pavlo was during the pandemic. During this difficult time, people came together to hear this beautiful world music with Mediterranean flavour,” said Katherine Albuquerque, President of The Bank Theatre. “Celebrating the Christmas season with Pavlo is also a lovely way to end the 2024 season at The Bank Theatre.”

Chair of music programming John Moran agreed, saying, “We are so excited to bring Pavlo back to The Bank Theatre. Pavlo’s shows are pure artistry and musicianship and people on their feet in joy. You can’t beat it!”

The Bank Theatre is located at 10 Erie Street South in the heart of uptown Leamington. The show takes place Monday, December 23 at 7 pm.

Doors open at 6 pm.

Who’s dreaming of a white Christmas?

While the weather outside isn’t quite frightful, we know it’s coming… eventually.

Last Christmas, the little ones eagerly awaited the white stuff to ease Santa’s arrival, but there was no snow to be seen up on the housetop.

Instead, we had a little fog, a little rain and temperatures not reflecting a winter wonderland.

But that’s okay, at least we were here and not in the little town of Bethle-

hem, where it was 22 degrees Celsius on Christmas day, in the land where the little drummer boy met up with good King Wenceslas and asked him that important question: Do you hear what I hear? And here we sit and while the temperatures have surely dropped, we’re not in a significant snowfall event, unlike our neighbours to the north, where it’s beginning to look a lot like

Christmas between Parry Sound and Sudbury.

I was up that way a couple of weeks ago and while the jingle bells were jingling in the mall, it was a green landscape for as far as the eye could see. The silver bells glistened, but not in the snow. The radio stations have started to turn toward the yearly songs, with I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas leading the way right out of the gate. It won’t be long before

1928 Chrysler nicknamed “Lucy”

Always looking for stories. Email billtsherk@ sympatico.ca.

Around 1940, Roy Gallagher bought his 1928 Chrysler roadster in Toronto for $40.

“Everything was loose on her so naturally I called her Lucy,” said Roy. “Every weekend I parked her by the Royal Alex or the Wonder Grove Dance Hall. I drove her between

RCAF stations during the war and sold her in 1947 for $275.”

THE OLD CAR DETECTIVE

When Roy sold his car, he was paid nearly seven times more than he paid for it. Such in-creases were common right after the war when new cars were not being built fast enough to keep up with the demand. Some people had to wait two years for

a new car. And even if you were lucky enough to buy a new car, it often arrived with parts missing.

My stepdad, Earl Domm, took delivery of a new 1946 Hudson sedan with wooden bumpers, no knob at the end of the gearshift and no back seat. These parts were all on back order and whenever the Domms drove to their cottage on Lake Simcoe, their two children had to sit on lawn chairs in the back seat.

we’re all rocking around the Christmas tree. After all, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

While I don’t care if it snows, there are others I know who chant let it snow every time they get an opportunity. Yes, I actually have family members who wish for snow and while I’m no longer a fan, I can see where they’d at least want a white Christmas.

While my mom complained about Christmas often, I think it was still her favourite holiday. We would consider her one of the angels we have heard on high.

Would you like to build a snowman? Go right ahead, once our greys and greens turn to

a marshmallow world.

Building my own Frosty the snowman used to be one of my favourite things to do when I believed in Jolly old St. Nicholas, or as many know him, Santa.

Tell me, what better way to signify the arrival of the season than to get out for a sleighride or simply put on your Christmas shoes.

The grandkids will be nestled all snug in their beds, dreaming of iphones, ipods and other such nonsense, regardless of the snow situation. Their school celebrations will include ‘recitals’ about the holidays, while

we simply called them Christmas concerts. Some of those songs actually bring joy to the world as we sing about Mary’s boy-child and the three wisemen, who came upon a midnight clear.

So have yourself a Merry little Christmas, just in case we get some of the white stuff between now and then. Enjoy the time with your family, either way.

There are 30 Christmas song titles in this article. See if you can find them.

It’s beginning to sound a lot like ...

With Christmas just a week away, a few of the contemporary radio stations have long since been kicking into high gear with their most popular Christmas songs flooding their airwaves.

Then there are others that hardly play anything at all, and a few that play nothing but Christmas oriented songs up to and including Christmas Day.

Back in the good old days of the ‘70s and ‘80s at CHYR, in the first week of December we’d play a Christmas song every half hour. In the second week we would play two songs every half hour, and increase it again in the third week and so on.

Getting on with the most popular songs to keep things consistent, as everything today is generally measured by digital downloads, then looking at Christmas sales, we’ll compare all the major Christmas song sales and airplay in that manner.

Looking at the bestselling Christmas and holiday singles in North America, the biggest selling Christmas song is “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey. Originally released in 1994 on the Columbia label, to date it has

had some 3,200,000 digital downloads.

The next closest song to that is “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” This song, on the Walt Disney label, features Kristin Bell, Agatha Lee Monn and Katie Lopez and has digital downloads of 1,600,000. It was originally released in 2013.

FLASHBACK RADIO with Chuck Reynolds

the top 10 include Faith Hill’s “Where Are You Christmas?”, which still is a yuletide favourite with its 977,000 downloads.

The third highest played song is by the thunderous rock group Trans-Siberian Orchestra. It’s called “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo”.

The Number 4 entry is much softer and was originally released 13 years ago by Justin Bieber.

Having some 1,100,000 digital downloads, “Mistletoe” was released on the Island music label in 2011.

The fifth highest-selling song of all time is a perennial favourite from 1958 that continues to get plenty of play every year at Christmas time and still has a million digital downloads. From the ever sweet and raspy singer Brenda Lee, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” still manages to get lots of plays a year.

Other Christmas hits in

Not to be outdone, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra came out in 1998 with “Christmas Canon”. With 918,000 digital downloads, it became a radio favourite in the many years to follow.

In 1970, Jose Feliciano came out with a great Spanish Christmas song called “Feliz Navidad” featuring himself, which sold over 808,000 copies.

Another great Christmas hit was Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock”, which became a favourite on radio stations all across North America in 1957 and has continued to be a favourite for parties and parades.

Naturally, the last song to reach the top 10 Christmas Hits was “Last Christmas” by Wham! That was the English group of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley in 1984.

Posada celebrated at churches in Kingsville

With origins in Mexico, Posada commemorates the Christmas journey of Mary and Joseph as they search for lodgings for the birth of their son Jesus.

That same trek was recognized in Kingsville on the evening of December 14, beginning at the Epworth United Church on Division Street South and culminating at the Church of the Epiphany on Main Street West.

The evening’s program was overseen by members of The Royal Canadian College of Organists and featured traditional Spanish carols sung by the Children’s Choir, Dale Burkholder on the handbells, solo vocalists Joanna Novosedlik and Diana Sanchez, the County Classic Chorale, Paul Wharram on the organ and a moving candlelit procession of carolers that made their way between the two churches.

The celebration ended on a lighter note with food and drink of a Spanish

Remembering…

The beauty of a memory is that it is always there, Like a penny in your pocket, you can take it anywhere. When your heart is heavy and your eyes are filled with tears, You can focus on the memories and travel through the years. Your heart can visit happy times, when laughter filled the air, And the presence of your loved one will lessen your despair. So as we travel on in life, take comfort as you go, In a lifetime of sweet memories of the one who loved you so. Always in our hearts, June, Nelson, Cathie,

UFCW Locals hold 5th annual holiday food drive

The UFCW Locals 175 and 633 held their 5th annual Holiday Food Drive recently with four local organizations benefiting from the 5,900 non-perishable items collected and donated by union members over the course of the past few weeks.

According to Helene Caine of Locals 175 and 633, they’ve set a new record for most items collected for this event.

Ronald McDonald House Canada of Windsor and the Windsor Downtown Mission, along with Abode Respites Services and St. Vincent de Paul St. Michael’s Leamington, all sent representatives to the pick-up day on Tuesday, December 10 at the UFCW office in Leamington. Union representatives were also on hand and expressed their pride and gratitude for their members, who worked hard to make the donations possible.

Each organization representative took time to speak and thank the union reps for their generosity before loading their allotment into their vehicles.

Items ranged from canned goods, to pasta, peanut butter, dry goods and cereals and will go toward helping to fill the respective pantries of the four charities.

THE LIGHTS LIGHT UP WHEATLEY

The Two Creeks Summer Concert Series is a popular Sunday night option for music lovers to visit the Two Creeks Conservation Area and listen to some top-notch local talent, all the while supporting the Two Creeks Association and the work they do on the grounds of the Conservation Area. That concert series now continues through the winter months with Two Creeks Indoors — a monthly concert series held indoors for music lovers to enjoy some great local concerts. On Sunday, December 15, the Wheatley United Church hosted Two Creeks Indoors with Sharon and David Light performing Christmas songs. A crowd of about 40-50 people enjoyed old-fashioned tunes performed with joy as the Lights transformed the church into a Christmas wonderland of sound.

As we approach the close of the year, it’s a time for reflection — both on the journey we’ve taken and the path ahead. For many of us, the past year in real estate has been one of learning, growing, and adapting. It’s a year that’s offered opportunities to strengthen relationships, face challenges, and celebrate triumphs. Reflecting on the Past Year

In this fast-paced, ever-changing market, one thing that stood out for me was the deep value of empathy, education, and care in every transaction. Whether working with first-time buyers, helping families find their forever homes, or supporting clients through the often emotional process of selling, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to approach each situation with understanding and patience.

One of the best moments of my year was an unforgettable experience involving a deal that came together through collaboration and communication. It took all four parties—both the selling and listing agents—coming together to find common ground and create a win/win outcome. When the deal was finalized and both young couples celebrated their new chapters, the room erupted in applause. That moment is a reminder of why I do what I do: seeing the joy and relief of clients finding the perfect home and knowing I helped make it happen.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we look to the new year, I’m filled with optimism. 2025 is sure to bring new opportunities for buyers and sellers alike. For those looking to buy, it will be essential to stay informed about shifting market trends and work with an agent who not only understands the local market but is also committed to educating you throughout the process. And for sellers, it’s crucial to be mindful of pricing, preparing your home to stand out, and timing your listing to get the best return.

Of course, the real estate market is more than just numbers and trends—it’s about people. It’s about listening to clients, understanding their needs, and working together to make the best possible decisions. That’s where my role goes beyond just a transaction. It’s about ensuring that everyone involved is comfortable, informed, and confident in their choices.

Balancing Work and Life

As I’ve navigated this busy year, I’ve come to realize how important it is to find balance—between work and personal life, between ambition and self-care. This year has been one of focusing on my own health and well-being, which has only made me more capable of supporting my clients and helping them achieve their dreams. I’ve learned that when I’m feeling at my best, I can give my clients the best of me.

A New Year, A New Opportunity

As we move into 2025, I encourage all buyers and sellers to take a moment to reflect on their own goals for the year ahead. Whether you’re making a move or simply exploring your options, remember that real estate is not just about properties—it’s about the people and the stories behind them. Together, we can make the journey a successful, rewarding, and even joyful one.

The essence of real estate lies in creating homes that embody intimacy, coziness, and soul—a true sense of hygge. A home should be a sanctuary where you can find comfort in soothing things, revel in cozy togetherness, and craft an atmosphere that inspires joy and connection. Whether it’s lighting candles for a warm glow, curling up with loved ones, or taking pleasure in the little details that make your space uniquely yours, a home is where experiences and memories flourish.

Here’s to a New Year filled with new beginnings, opportunities, and the continued privilege of helping you find not just a house but a place to call home—a space that brings you warmth, happiness, and a sense of belonging.

Leamington’s Past courtesy of the C. Scott Holland Collection

December 1994 - Kyle Hyatt, 5-year-old son of Charlie and Pennie Hyatt, will long remember his visit with Santa last Saturday at the Ivan Coulter Park. Kyle told Santa his wish list, enjoyed the hot chocolate and candy and then he won a monster prize to provide the family with a traditional Christmas dinner. Over 100 draws were held during the afternoon for hams, turkeys and gift certificates.

Kinsmen Club was driving force behind creation of complex

In the late 1970s, the idea of building a recreation complex was discussed by Leamington town council. In January 27, 1982 assent was given to the project which included $3,500 for drawings from Windsor engineering firm Valdez, plus test holes at a number of possible sites. An application for a government grant was made under the (federal) NEED (New Employment Economic Development) program. Leamington’s Kinsmen Club would be responsible for raising all funds except for the land.

On March 3, 1983 — with help from the Kinsmen Club — government funds to build a sports complex consisting of a 25 metre pool, racquetball and squash courts, gymnasium and indoor track was estimated at $4.6 million and presented to MP Bob Daudlin.

A total of four possible/potential sites for it were examined: land west of Leamington District Secondary School(LDSS), land east of Canadian Canners, the Mill Street parking lot, or land west of the Mill Street lot.

Kinsmen spokesman Jim Reid said, “Land for the sportsplex may have to be donated,” and that the best spots were either the Mill Street parking lot or the land west of LDSS.

By early April, the H.J. Heinz Co. offered two-and-a-half acres on Sherk Street, south of Ellison.

Heinz president Thomas D. Smyth asked that the complex be named the Frank T. Sherk Complex in honour of “the first non-Heinz family member to become president and his tireless dedication to the community.”

The Sherk Street land’s value was pegged at $250,000 and council passed a resolution that the town accept ownership and operating costs.

A further resolution regarding the Sherk Complex was that the town accepts any annual deficit but the Heinz Co. stated it would pick up one-half of any deficit up to $25,000 in 1984 and up to $50,000 in 1985. The town decided to set aside a $250,000 contingency fund to support the complex and in May the federal government approved funding for the complex.

By August of that year, Kinsmen Club president Jerry Thompson and the Sherk family donated $5,000 towards

the fundraising drive.

Work began late in 1983 but halted with indefinite layoffs because no employees had union certification. The Kinsmen sought private contractors as an option in 1984 and work on the complex was slated to resume June 1 as the federal government provided further funding and a tender for private contractors was issued.

A London firm, McKay-Crocker, was awarded the complex tender with a bid of $4.58 million and the H.J. Heinz Co. donated an additional two acres of land on the complex’s west side for parking. The complex was completed in the summer of 1985 and one of its first big events was a Wintario draw on August 22. Its official opening was on September 27, 1985, and in one single day 2,000 memberships were taken. In its first month, about 1,000 people used the sports facility.

The following year a lounge was opened for the complex and in 1987, 13 workers began a strike. The heated issue was that part-time employees were not part of the bargaining unit of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 459. The strike went on for some time but eventually got resolved.

A further enhancement to the facility came in 1999 when its twin-pad ice rinks were built on land north of the complex. The rinks, originally named the Unico and H.J. Heinz rinks, are NHL and Olympic-sized and once again Leamington’s Kinsmen Club played a major role in fundraising for the $14.5 million rinks.

In the ensuing years, the complex has undergone numerous additions, improvements and changes galore. It has survived one of the toughest periods in history, from March 2020 until the lifting of COVID restrictions when all activities at the complex were prohibited.

Upon its reopening it has rebounded greatly and within the past year has added generators which will enable the complex to provide safe conditions for residents in case of any major power outages.

Looking back at its nearly 40 years of serving Leamington and southern Essex County, its creation and presence has been a boost and remains a gem.

Locally produced horror film making waves with early teasers

The friendly landscape of Windsor and Essex County may not look so friendly once the filming of the new horror film Avery is complete.

Windsor-based film company

South Detroit Films just began filming Avery in Kingsville recently with other scenes being shot over the winter and into spring and summer of 2025.

The entire movie will be shot locally, with downtown Windsor doubling as Detroit and many county spots portraying rural communities in Michigan.

Writer, director and producer Dan Savoie, has gathered plenty of local talent and supplemented that with some names that may be familiar to readers.

Jeff Burrows — long-time drummer for The Tea Party and mainstay in The S’aints Band — is in the cast for his first acting gig, as well as local radio personality and former boxer, Kara Ro.

Other names you may recognize are accomplished actresses Jacqui Childs and August Kyss, with a cameo by Helix frontman Brian Vollmer thrown in for good measure.

Harrow’s Rebecca Mickle will play FBI Agent Simmons in the thriller as well, but those who watch the film will remember nine-year-old Windsorite Elora Iera, who is playing the title character, Avery.

Avery’s dad is the notorious serial killer known as the Dollmaker. He’s escaped maximum security prison and suddenly, a killing spree starts to take hold in and around Lakewood Falls, Michigan — a fictional town portrayed by various locales in Essex County.

Little do the townspeople know, but little Avery has inherited her father’s thirst for blood and mayhem, setting off a series of events that will keep moviegoers on the edge of their seats.

Initial scenes were filmed in Kingsville on Sunday, December 8 with Elora Iera and Kara Ro posing for some pre-production

shots before enacting their scene together.

Cinematographer and co-producer Walter Riggi — a Windsor-born veteran of the movie industry — is in charge of bringing Savoie’s vision together on the big screen.

“I’m so excited to get this going,” says Riggi. “Dan’s got a great vision for this entire project. I’m really excited to be part of it.”

Riggi has worked on dozens of movies and television shows throughout his career and is happy to be on board for Avery.

“Dan has brought in some great equipment,” he adds. “I think it’s going to be shot very well and I’ll do my best to get his vision across.”

He says the Windsor-Essex area is primed to be a top choice for movie production and he’s part of a team trying to bring more productions to the area.

Jeff Burrows and Jacqui Childs will play the adoptive parents of Avery, who have no idea of their new daughter’s past until it’s too late.

Elora Iera says she is excited to get started on filming and thrilled that her character already has a teaser out on YouTube.

This is her second acting gig, with her first being a Revolution Youth Theatre production of ‘Dracula Spectacula’ last spring.

Elora’s portrayal of Avery stands out already, with the teaser being viewed over 40,000 times.

Savoie says his little protégé is already sending shivers down the spines of unsuspecting viewers, many of whom can’t wait for the movie’s release.

While Elora says that the porcelain-style mask they have her wearing is uncomfortable, it’s a price she’s willing to pay to be in the movie business. She’s always been a horror fan, so this isn’t a big stretch for her to jump into the genre. They’ve already recorded a creepy song for her, which is reminiscent of the famous “one, two, Freddy’s coming for you” from A Nightmare on Elm Street.

As the tagline says, “Evil has a new face… and it’s porcelain.”

Flyers win back-to-back weekend games

The Leamington Flyers returned to action on Saturday night, December 14 as they travelled to the big city to play the Toronto Patriots. They were back home for the first time in over two weeks on Sunday, December 15 verus the Buffalo Jr. Sabres.

Saturday’s game was also the first time the team had played since trading goalie Tre Altiman to the King Rebellion in exchange for forward Dalton Kane.

Kane — who wears #18 — got the Flyers’ opening goal in their 4-1 victory over Toronto. Adding to the victory was the fact that the Flyers had a fairly healthy lineup with the return of Michael Denney and Gavin Grundner.

They followed that up playing at home for the first time since December 1, by beating the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 4-1.

After having the last two Thursday night home games postponed due to inclement weather, Flyers head coach Dale Mitchell said, “It was a long week again with just practices. It was helpful to get some guys back into the lineup.”

“We didn’t come out very strong, but thanks to Marcus (Vandenberg) who shut the door when we needed it,” said Mitchell of Saturday’s victory. “We have a couple games until (Christmas) break so we need to play a full 60 minutes and expect to get everyone’s best.”

Leamington led 1-0 in the first period and the game stayed that way until the third when the Patriots tied it at 4:05 on a shorthanded breakaway.

The Flyers had gained the 1-0 lead when Kane plucked a Gavin Grundner rebound past goalie Alex Levshyn.

Nearly five minutes after the Patriots had knotted the contest, Griffin Grundner reasserted the Flyers lead with a left-lane blast.

On the heels of Grundner’s tally, Michael Denney unleashed a bullet that gave the Flyers a 3-1 edge. Colton Smith added an empty-net marker in the final minutes to secure a 4-1 win. Vandenberg got the victory, stopping 33 of 34 shots.

The Flyers had two call-ups for the contest as Tomas Kniaziew was the back-up goalie and Vincent Bondy played defense, wearing #3.

On Sunday the Flyers hosted a make-up game against the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, the current eighth-place team in their conference and a potential first-round playoff opponent.

The gritty physical game threatened to escalate into some exchanges of fisticuffs in its later stages as a small crowd of 360 watched.

Flyers Ethan Walker and Michael Denney combined to set up Brayden Degelas’ goal, which vaulted Leamington into a 1-0 lead at 9:44 of the opening period.

The second frame began with some excitement as Buffalo’s Alex Strachan was awarded a penalty shot attempt two minutes into the period, but Flyers goalie Marcus Vandenberg stood his ground and halted the

shot. With Griffin Grundner serving a minor penalty, Sean Truby broke into the Sabres’ zone and launched a shorthanded goal that put Leamington ahead 2-0 midway through the stanza.

Buffalo got their lone marker less than a minute afterwards to close the gap to 2-1.

The game remained that way until late in the third. Heading into the final three minutes, Buffalo lifted starting goalie Anthony Alessi for an extra attacker.

However, the move backfired as Adrian Bosev tabbed an empty-net goal to put Leamington up 3-1. Then, with seconds left in the game, Colton Smith followed suit with his own empty-net tally for a 4-1 victory.

The Flyers will play their last home game before the Christmas break when they meet the Oakville Blades on Alumni Night on Thursday, December 19 at 7:10 pm.

The Flyers’ annual Toys For Tots and collecting of scarves, mitts and hats will take place that night as well.

New charity hockey tournament raises over

A new charity adult hockey tournament held in Leamington in early November has raised $7,116.18 to help The Bridge Youth Resource Centre.

The tournament, organized by a group of 50+ Leamington hockey players, welcomed about 20 teams to this year’s event and they hope to make it an annual weekend.

Tournament spokesperson Chris Babkirk was grateful to all who made donations of cash, prizes and their time to make the tournament go off without a hitch.

“Everyone we spoke to was eager to help make the fundraising tournament a success,” he said. “At the end of the tournament, everyone had an awesome time while raising money for a great cause.”

Babkirk said many local business and individuals had a hand in helping raise the amount, which goes to The Bridge to help with their support of area

$7,000

youth and their needs.

Krista Rempel, Executive Director of The Bridge, accepted the cheque and thanked the tournament committee for their generosity.

“Every amount we get goes a long way toward helping offset our costs,” she said. “Thank you for your generosity.”

Essex County’s first all-girls soccer league kicks off registration online

For the first time in Essex County, girls will have a soccer league to call their own. Unite Her Soccer, the region’s inaugural all-girls house league, is set to launch in May 2025, offering players aged eight and up (born 2007-2018) a unique opportunity to play in an empowering and inclu-

sive environment.

Sponsored by Count Her In and registered with the Ontario Soccer Association, Unite Her Soccer provides a ground-breaking platform for girls to stay active, develop skills and gain confidence. The program is also partnered with SC United Soccer Club, creating pathways

to competitive leagues and post-secondary scholarships.

“This is about more than just soccer,” said Kara Murray, Founder of Count Her In. “We’re creating a space where girls can develop leadership, teamwork, and resilience — skills that will serve them far beyond the field.”

Registration opened December 14 and the season will run May-July, 2025 across Essex County.

The need for a dedicated all-girls program is critical. Research shows that 7-in-10 girls drop out of sports before adolescence, often due to lack of access, loss of confidence and the challenge of playing in male-dominated spaces. Unite Her Soccer aims to reverse this trend by fostering an environment where girls can thrive.

With the Sharks in control and pressing to increase their two goal lead, Stefan Jacobs is robbed by the Blenheim netminder from close range as Josh Chauvin and Owen Papulkas look for a non-existent rebound. Blenheim would capitalize shortly after on a Sharks defensive lapse to cut the lead in half en route to a 3-2 overtime win.

Sharks grab three-of-four points

The Wheatley Omstead Sharks were poised to complete a perfect weekend, gaining a road win while enduring a tough overtime home-ice setback.

Wednesday, December 11 at home, the locals jumped to a first-period 2-0 lead against Blenheim on tallies by Josh Chauvin and Vito Alfano.

They looked poised to up the lead in the second with a serious offensive attack, only to see Blenheim escape with the lone marker of the period.

The Sharks surrendered the lead at the midway point, forcing overtime.

Overtime favoured the Sharks but a costly penalty saw the Blades notch a game-winning powerplay goal.

Jaxon Drysdale made a head-shaking goalmouth save late to keep the Sharks in the hunt as he faced 28 shots on the

night, while the Sharks blasted 38 quality chances.

Saturday on the road in Amherstburg, the Bleau brothers blew down the Admirals en route to a 3-1 Sharks win. Josh tied the game midway through the second, setting the stage for Kyle’s heroics as he notched two in the final frame.

Ethan Handley showed a resilient effort after a brief layoff backstopping 28 of 29 shots.

“It would have been great to get all four (points) but we won the week overall,” said coach Josh Carnevale. “We’re getting solid goaltending, but need to find some more offence with some tough games coming up.”

The Sharks hit the road to end the calendar with road tilts in Essex, Lakeshore and Dresden before returning home on January 3.

U11B Blazers take silver in Silver Stick

The U11B Talbot Trail Blazers team traveled to Chatham on the December 13 weekend to compete in the Silver Stick qualifier tournament and brought home the silver medal.

Friday morning saw the Trail Blazers face a South Kent Lightning team in a close game ending in a 1-1 tie.

The Blazers followed up with a solid team game resulting in a commanding 8-0 win over the Strathroy Jr. Rockets.

The final game of the round robin saw the Trail Blazers face off in a hard fought battle against the Norfolk Knights. The game ended in a 4-4 tie, sending the team to the semi-finals on Sunday.

After an early first period goal for the Blazers in the semi-final game versus Haldimand River Kings, the game would need to be decided in a shootout. With three shooters finding the back of the net, Talbot Trail prevailed, securing a spot in the finals.

With a quick two-hour turnaround, the Trail Blazers were back on the ice to face the Kent Co-

bras. The championship game provided much excitement with multiple lead changes.

Down by one with an empty net, the Blazers tied the game with 22 seconds to go, forcing a

sudden death overtime period.

The two teams went back and forth, but after

10 minutes the game was still tied, sending them to the second shootout of the day.

Kent took the win in the shootout, with the Blazers taking the silver medal.

Can I please have a magic mixy doll because I saw a lot of commercials of it and I am getting a little jealous. If I could have gift cards for the homeless people that would be great. I hope you have a great trip around the world. Can you please get my brother like a little kitchen because whenever we go to Nonna’s house he goes straight to the tiny toy kitchen and talks up a storm and it’s just so adorable watching him laugh. Annalise, age 8

Dear Santa, I would like Feastables and a remote control car. Hayden
