WINTER 2021

Editorial EDITOR’S NOTE When we started working on this issue in early summer, this was going to be the GLAM issue. We know so many people are tired of laying low and dressing down, so we had big plans for a glamorous cover with a stunning gown envoking the fun and fashion many of us are longing to return to.

Southpoint Living is published by:

Southpoint Publishing

194 Talbot Street East, Unit 2 Leamington, ON N8H 1M2

But as summer progressed, it became apparent that this winter wasn’t yet going to be the return of our pre-pandemic life. So we switched gears and decided to focus on staying warm and cozy this winter. Because if we can’t control our current situation, the least we can do is control our current surroundings.

So here’s to a warm and cozy winter and wishing you all the best in what will hopefully be a more exciting, more glamorous 2022.

Hugs After spending so much time being distant from loved ones, hugs feel better than ever before.

90’s Fashion From slip dresses and bucket hats to grunge-style plaid and Doc Martens, 90’s fashion has made a comeback.

Revenge Travel After being stuck at home for way too long, many people are doing what’s being called ‘revenge travel’, spending more money than they would have pre-pandemic to take extravagant and exotic trips.

What’s hot...

Shopping Local Yes, we included this in our last issue too but many local businesses are hurting and could use the economic boost of a busy holiday season. Here are a few ways to support local businesses: • Hosting a get together? Instead of making the meal yourself, consider ordering from a local restaurant. • Purchase gift cards not only to local stores but also for services like hair, nails, massage and spa treatments. • Let your friends and family know the local stores you would love to receive a gift or gift card from.

Cryptocurrency

Empathy Ok, let’s be honest - there doesn’t actually seem to be a lot of this going around these days, but there should be. Everyone is going through something right now. Being kind and trying to understand someone else’s point of view has never been more important than now. And if all else fails, just remember the golden rule: if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Reboots, Revivals and Remakes People either love them or hate them but these days it seems like everything from the past is getting a reboot, revival or remake. Some of the more recent ones include Home Alone (above), Dexter, The Wonder Years and Doogie Kamealoha, a remake of Doogie Howser, MD. PHOTO:

Similar to NFT’s, cryptocurrency has a lot of buzz these days with the majority of people, including many who have invested in it, not really understanding what exactly it is. According to CNBC, it is ‘a digital asset that utilizes computer code and blockchain technology to operate somewhat on its own, without the need for a central party — be that a person, company, central bank or government — to manage the system’. There are more than 6500 cryptocurrencies in existence with Bitcoin and Ethereum being the most popular. Earlier this year, El Salvador became the first nation in the world to adopt a cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) as one of its official currencies.

Katarina Ingratta @makeup__by__kat

Miss Dior Eau de Parfum

A new take on the classic Miss Dior and my favourite newest addition to my collection. Top notes: Iris, Peony and Lily-of-the-Valley. Middle notes: Rose, Peach and Apricot. Base notes: Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Musk, Benzoin and Sandalwood.

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear All Over Concealer

This concealer has easily become a new favourite of mine. It is perfect for brightening under the eye or covering any imperfections. The texture is lightweight and it is a buildable formula, making it perfect for any touch-ups throughout the day.

PÜR Forever Soft Rejuvenating Lip Treatment

Just in time for winter, the forever soft lip treatment from PÜR is perfect to hydrate and soothe dry, cracked lips. It contains sunflower seed oil, vitamin E, and watermelon extract for a healthier and hydrated lip.

Clarins Double Serum Eye

Many of you have already fallen in love with the Double Serum from Clarins and they have now launched the Double Serum Eye. Proven to smooth wrinkles, reduce puffiness and dark circles, and strengthen the skin around the eyes, it is a must have in any skincare routine.

PÜR Forever Soft Rejuvenating Lip Treatment

Miss Dior Eau de Parfum

I personally love all-in-one palettes. They are so easy to reach for and are very versatile. I love the new face palette from PÜR in fair-light. Tip: Use the highlighting and bronzing shade in this palette as eyeshadow if you prefer to travel lightly and leave your eyeshadow palette at home.

WINTER SKIN

RESCUE Easy ways to show your skin some love this winter Just as skin requires certain protection from the sun and heat in the summer, skin has special needs in the winter too. The cold, dry winter weather can be particularly challenging for people with dry or sensitive skin. These tips can help maintain your skin’s appearance and health during the cold weather months: • Don’t skip the sunscreen. Sunscreen is not a summer-only requirement. UV rays can damage the skin any time of year, even if the rays are not as strong as during the summer. UV radiation accelerates and increases the risk of skin cancer. It also can lead to premature aging. Utilize a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. • Invest in a humidifier. Dry, cold temperatures can rob the skin of essential moisture, even indoors. Dermatologists suggest using a humidifier at home to boost the amount of moisture in the air. This can make skin more comfortable and can have other health benefits as well. • Skip hot showers. It can be tempting to sit under a hot stream of water to warm up. However, hot water dries out the skin by depleting natural oils. Take warm showers instead and don’t stay in for longer than 15 minutes. • Limit exfoliation. While exfoliation can remove dead skin, overdoing it can make already sensitive skin more raw. Increase the time between exfoliation treatments. • Don’t forget your lips and eyes. Something as simple as petroleum jelly on the lips can help prevent chapping, and it’s good to invest in a quality eye cream that can help the delicate skin around the eyes as well.

Winter Whites by Victoria Baird

For those of us who grew up being told wearing white after Labour Day is a huge fashion faux pas, even considering wearing white into winter could make you feel squeamish. White (winter white, ivory or stone) is the new classic that will elevate any winter wardrobe. Here’s how to make it work in yours:

Victoria Baird

Image Coach victoriabaird.com @imageandinspiration

1

OUTERWEAR

Play it safe with outerwear. Choosing pieces like a puffer vest/coat or winter snow boots is a great way to introduce white into your winter wardrobe in a way that may be more comfortable for some. Same goes for hats, gloves, or scarves.

2

SWEATER

3 4 5

A white sweater makes the perfect pairing in the winter, whether it’s paired with denim, faux leather or a sequin skirt for a holiday party. Or you can flip this styling tip and use white denim as a bottom paired with your favourite coloured sweater.

WHITE ON WHITE

Play by mixing different textures, fabrics, and materials. Layering those pieces within the family of whites is ultra-chic.

PAIR WITH NEUTRALS

Pair with other softer neutrals such as grey, camel or shades of beige for a sophisticated look.

touch of dark colour

Rich red, black, navy or forest green all make great accents to an all-white ensemble. Thinks boots, belts and bags in leather or suede.

While a classic white tailored shirt, white denim jeans and some sheer material blouses can be worn year-round, overall wearing white in winter means choosing pieces in a heavier material, meant for cooler weather and bottoms that are lined are best. 12 | Southpoint Living

[ home ]

by Kat Tiessen As the temperature drops by Kat Tiessen and we spend more time indoors, a natural instinct pops up - the desire to make our indoor spaces cozy and comforting. We start to look for ways to prepare our homes for the long, dark, cold winter ahead. Masterfully mixing and layering textures is the best way to make your space comfortable and inviting; incorporating objects that we can touch and feel the texture of. Think big chunky cable knit throws or artfully adding a fringed area rug or fringed pillow; a furry accent chair or stool; or switch up the linen for velvet drapery. Those are all smart and easy ways to add cozy pieces to your home. Textures can also be found in unexpected places like a lamp base wrapped in twine or a faux crocodile skin, the deep, visible wood grain of an accent table, and textile wall art. Those are great ways to add depth and layers of comfort to bring on the cozy. And don’t be afraid to get creative! It is the unpredicted and unexpected that personalizes and makes a space stunning. 14 | Southpoint Living

E K A H S P UA STALE WORKOUT

Eating less and moving more are the hallmarks of many fitness regimens, especially those designed for people who want to lose weight. Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce risk factors for many illnesses, making weight loss a worthy goal for those who can afford to shed a few pounds. While people have good intentions when designing their exercise regimens, over time hitting the treadmill or doing a weight circuit can lose its appeal. When exercise routines become stale, people may be put off from doing something that is essential to their overall health. Routinely switching things up can keep workouts fresh and exciting. Try a trendy workout Experiment with a new fitness trend to see if you like it. Start by talking with a personal trainer or group exercise captain at your fitness center. Chances are they’ve already implemented novel workouts for their clients and they can walk you through some of the offerings. So whether it’s barre classes that make you feel like a prima ballerina or renegade rowing to emulate a crew team, new exercises can help to banish boredom.

16 | Southpoint Living

Cut down on workout time It’s easy to lose interest in a lengthy workout. Highintensity workouts can streamline exercise to 30 minutes or less and produce the same results as longer, less intense regimens. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a popular regimen that pairs bursts of maximumoutput moves with short recoveries to streamline efforts. Bring a friend along A buddy to exercise alongside can make a regimen fun even if you’ve done the same things over and over. Plus, a healthy dose of lighthearted competition may motivate you to keep going. Change small components Apart from preventing boredom, changes to a routine also benefit your body. If exercise regimens stay the same and you keep doing the same number of reps and sets, your body can adapt to these workouts, making it difficult to break plateaus. Lack of variation also may decrease focus, which can make it hard to achieve your fitness goals. A consultation with a personal trainer can help you adapt your routine or find an entirely new one.

FIT

FASHIONABLY

EXCLUSIVE LUXURY METAL CABINETRY

A former Leamington resident has recently launched a fitness apparel line to fill a gap she saw in the market. Amanda (Neufeld) Kerr, pictured above, now lives in Sarnia but her love of fitness began when she was a teenager doing cardio classes at the Frank T. Sherk Aquatic & Fitness Centre (now called the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre). “I always knew I wanted to do something in the fitness industry,” she says. Amanda, who has competed in body building, set out to create a highly functional apparel line that empowers women to feel comfortable and powerful no matter what their fitness goals are.

MODERN EUROPEAN

“We (Canadians) don’t have a lot of fitness apparel; it’s more directed to yoga, running and cardio, that kind of thing.” Bubbles and Barbells products are made to offer support and playful designs while being functional for any type of workout and day-to-day activities. Amanda has travelled extensivley and realized how important it was to have multi-functional clothing, which was one of her visions with Bubbles & Barbells.

FULLY FUNCTIONAL CABINETS

The line currently includes tank tops, crop tops and fitness accessories with additional products planned including leggings. And why the name Bubbles and Barbells? “Life is all about balance,” Amanda says. “You can still maintain your fitness goals while having a glass of champagne.”

Bubbles and Barbells products are available locally at Howe Fit in Kingsville and Impact Health and Fitness in Leamington, or online at bubblesandbarbells.ca

A new kind of

COCKTAIL is coming soon

If you’re looking for an alternative to sugary cocktails, or an alternative to edibles or smoking cannabis, Leamington’s Blüm Beverage Co. will soon have a new product to offer. Blüm founder MaryLyn Liovas worked in the cannabis industry for several years before leaving to pursue a career as a speech pathologist. With a number of family and friends still working in the cannabis industry, Liovas would often hear about industry news and product developments, and when she began hearing about cannabis beverages, it piqued her interest. “I remember thinking this is a total game changer for people who aren’t interested in necessarily smoking or vaping cannabis, or having an edible,” Liovas said. “And this could also be an alternative to alcohol.” With the cannabis beverage market still in its relatively early days, she decided it was the perfect time to enter the market. After a year and a half of formulation and product development, Blüm’s debut product is ready to go to market. It is a strawberry, lime and mint cannabisinfused sparkling water that is a nod to the strawberry mojito. It contains no sugar, no sweetener, 10 calories and 5 mg of THC. Additional flavours are also in the works. The production process uses nano-technology resulting in no taste or smell of cannabis and allowing for a relatively quick onset of effects, similar to alcohol. “Our goal is to create cocktail-inspired cannabis beverages as an approachable and familiar alternative to alcohol,” Liovas says.

MaryLyn Liovas Founder, Blüm Beverage Co.

The cannabis industry is heavily regulated and the approval process can be lengthy. Blüm has already been approved to start selling in Alberta and British Columbia later this year, and they hope to get approval to start selling in Ontario in Spring 2022. Once approved to sell in Ontario, consumers will be able to purchase Blüm drinks through licenced cannabis retailers.

THE HE ALTH BENEFITS OF

DRINKING TEA When in need of a beverage to warm them up, billions of people across the globe routinely look to tea. That choice has been made since ancient times, as various historians trace the habitual consumption of tea to ancient China. Anything that has survived since ancient times no doubt has some good qualities, and the following teas are no exception: • White tea boasts anti-carcinogenic properties and is a significant source of fluoride, catechins and tannins, ingredients that can strengthen teeth, improve their resistance to acid and sugar and fight plaque.

• Peppermint tea is made from dried leaves of the peppermint plant and can help to soothe an upset stomach and help people overcome conditions like constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and motion sickness. Peppermint calms the muscles of the stomach and improves the flow of bile.

• Chamomile tea is widely regarded as a sleepinducer and it has also been shown to improve heart health.

• Green tea is loaded with flavonoid, which can improve heart health by lowering bad cholesterol and reducing blood clotting.

Madison Hamm’s goal of pursuing a career in musical theatre came to a screeching halt when COVID hit. The Leamington native had studied musical theatre and had planned to pursue a career in that area after college. But when the entertainment industry was forced to shut down, Madison decided to take a different approach to pursuing her dreams. “There were no auditions in the theatre world so I had to be creative to get my dreams off the ground,” Madison says. “I started writing my own music as a way for me to take my dreams and my passions into my own hands and not rely on the musical theatre industry or anyone else.” She began posting videos on social media of her singing both original and cover songs, helping her get some attention during the pandemic including that of a producer out of Toronto who she has recently been working with to record her original songs. My Kids

I’m blessed with two beautiful kids. Milania is 6 years old and Ivano is 3 years old. In the new year, we also found out that I’m expecting twins- a boy and a girl!

My Favourite Things

Hosting Family Dinners

We grew up around the table. Family was always a strong foundation to our upbringing. This is a tradition I insist on keeping strong.

Italy Italy is by far my favourite place to travel. I’ve had the pleasure of going a few times, however, my last visit in 2015 was my favourite as we surprised my Nonna in her hometown.

Table Settings

Tania Iacobelli Milavo Design Photo by Heike Delmore

Whether it’s a holiday gathering or a regular Tuesday, I love to set the table. There’s something personal about designing a table based on the occasion to represent you and the meal you are serving.

Weekends Away With My Husband With two kids at home and two on the way, my husband and I always try to get away at least a couple of times a year. Whether we are spending the night in Birmingham, MI, a long weekend away in Napa Valley or just a couple of days away in Toronto, it’s always nice to have some time to reconnect. 22 | Southpoint Living

Interior Design & Architecture

I have always had a passion for interior design and architecture. I was lucky enough to be able to start my own business, Milavo Design, which allowed me to express my creativity, do what I love and work with some amazing people.

Waterford Crystal

My mom has always inspired me to collect Waterford Crystal but one of my favourite parts of the collection are my wine glasses. This goes hand in hand with the table settings and having the perfect accessory to compliment my setup.

Bucket List Travel

[ travel ]

Travel and Leisure magazine declared that 2022 will be ‘the year of the bucket-list vacation’. If you’re looking to add to your bucket list, consider these destinations:

TANZANIA, AFRICA

The wildlife is typically the initial draw, but Tanzania also offers the highest peak in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as idyllic beaches in the Zanzibar archipelago.

MYKONOS, GREECE

One of the most popular destinations in Greece, the vivid island of Mykonos draws tourists because of its beaches, restaurants, shops and epic party scene.

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

If you’re a wine lover, Napa Valley is a no-brainer. You’ll find award-winning wineries, luxury boutique hotels and some of the best restaurants in the United States.

MALDIVE ISLANDS

This island nation in the Indian Ocean features no shortage of stunning views with turquoise water, sandy white beaches, palm trees, and lavish lagoon villas.

THE 411 ON

MEDITATING

What is meditating?

According to Merriam-Webster, meditating is “to engage in mental exercise (such as concentration on one’s breathing or repetition of a mantra) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness”.

Why do people meditate?

The most common reason people meditate is for relaxation - to calm the mind during stressful times when thoughts are running rampant. However people also meditate for increased focus and concentration, to acheieve peak performance in work, academics and athletics, to alleviate physical pain and for the overall health benefits. People also meditate because it’s convenient (it can be done anywhere), it can be done for as much or as little time as you have available, and it’s also free or has a minimal cost involved (i.e. purchasing an app). 24 | Southpoint Living

What are the benefits of meditating?

Perhaps the greatest thing about meditating is that there are a number of benefits that can improve various aspects of your life: MENTAL BENEFITS

Perhaps the most common benefit of meditation is that it reduces stress and anxiety. Meditation serves as a reboot for your scattered mind. PHYSICAL BENEFITS

If our mind is calm, we reduce our risk for things like heart disease and high blood pressure. Meditation can also help people who have trouble sleeping. RELATIONSHIP BENEFITS

Meditating will help you learn to handle stress better which means you will be less likely to snap at your spouse, kids, co-workers,etc.

What is the best way to start meditating? The easiest way to start meditating is by doing guided meditations. Check out apps like Calm and Headspace or search for guided meditation videos on YouTube. Simply close your eyes and listen as someone else tells you what to do.

What are the different types of meditation?

There are a number of different types of meditation and it’s important to find one that you enjoy and that suits your needs. The most popular types of meditation are mindfulness meditation (the act of paying attention to your thoughts, not trying to change them but simply acknowledging them and moving on) and mantra meditation (using a repetitive word, phrase or sound to calm the mind).

HOW TO HELP

HOUSEPLANTS SURVIVE A LONG WINTER

Here are a few ways to give your plants some TLC this winter Watering Watering needs change when the temperatures drop, with houseplants needing less water in winter. In fact, overwatering in winter can be especially harmful to indoor plants. Plant owners can try decreasing the frequency of their watering by half throughout the winter and see how the plants respond. Cleaning Dust settles in many homes in winter, when windows tend to remain closed for months on end and fresh air isn’t circulating as much as it is in spring and summer. Dust inhibits a plant’s ability to photosynthesize, thus compromising its ability to make it through a winter unscathed. Gently washing plants with a paper towel or cloth that’s been moistened with water can easily remove the dust.

Location Hours of daylight shorten in winter, which means some houseplants won’t get as much sun as they were accustomed to over the last several months. That means plants may need to be relocated closer to windows where they can make the most of each day’s sunlight. However, it’s important that there’s ample distance between the plant and the window, especially when winter temperatures get especially cold. If the plants are too close to a window on cold days, they could freeze. Keep them close enough to the windows to get ample sunlight but far enough away so they don’t get too cold. In addition, keep plants away from drafty windows as well as heating vents, as extreme temperatures are not conducive to healthy houseplants.

TIPS FOR STARTING YOUR OWN

PODCAST Kingsville resident Sarah Haefling is an expert in all things podcasting. She is the host of the Made It Happen podcast and the founder of Elevate Podcast Co., where she helps others build, record and publish podcasts. Podcasts can be a great way to increase brand awareness, reach new audiences and establish yourself as an expert in your field. If you’re thinking about starting a podcast, here are Sarah’s top tips: Be Prepared

It’s exciting to be starting your own podcast, but before you jump in with both feet it’s best to plan ahead and be prepared in order to make the show the best it can be. Before you start recording, make sure you have a clear vision of what you want your podcast to be about, who your target audience is, what topics you will cover, and what impact you want to make. It’s a good idea to plan out (or even record) the first few episodes beforehand so you know you have enough content to cover.

Set Realistic Goals

No matter what the purpose of your podcast is, it’s important to have realistic expectations; unfortunately those overnight successes are very rare in podcasting. But don’t be discouraged, it’s important to be patient and consistent. Try to avoid setting large download goals and instead focus on factors you can control, such as releasing a new episode every week for the next 4 months. And make sure to remember your ‘why’ throughout the process. It takes time to build your podcast and your audience, so that ‘why’ is what will keep you going during those times when it’s not moving as quickly as you hoped.

Timing Is Everything

Before you press ‘publish’ on your first episode, there are some key timing considerations you should know. For starters, your podcast will get distributed through a ‘hosting platform’ such as Anchor, BuzzSprout or PodBean. It can take days (or sometimes even weeks) before it gets approved to be released onto Apple Podcast, Spotify, Google Podcast, etc. So it’s best to plan ahead and be prepared for this. The next component of timing is when your podcast will actually be released. Will it be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly? It’s completely up to you but it’s important to stay consistent so your audience knows when to expect a new episode.

Repurpose Your Content

One aspect of podcasting that can often be overlooked is the marketing component of it. In order for people to listen to your podcast, they first need to know about it. That’s where repurposing your audio content is key. You can use the content to post on social media such as sound clips, video snippets, quote images, and more. Tips to help you

While there’s no universal formula for success, successful people often cite the importance of setting goals and how doing so was integral to their success. The following are some strategies that can make you more likely to achieve your goals: • Make it a group effort

Find others who have similar goals and hold each other accountable. Relying on others for support, insight and motivation can be a great way to achieve your goals, no matter what those goals are.

• Set goals big and small

No goal is too small, and no big goal should be considered beyond reach. In fact, achieving small goals can provide motivation and inspiration along the way to realizing your larger goals. Devise a one-month plan, a sixmonth plan and a 12-month plan for your goals. The one-year plan can serve as your big goal, while the one- and six-month plans can serve as small motivators and great ways to track your progress en route to achieving your larger goal.

• Write down why you’re setting these goals

People set goals for various reasons, and writing down the reasons can serve as inspiration when challenges arise. For example, if you aspire to change careers to spend more time with your family, writing that down can provide motivation to keep looking for opportunities when a job search stalls or feels fruitless.

I’M AN

OCTOPUS A Look Into The Fine Art Of Multitasking

by Mona Taouil One busy September morning while on the phone, trying to input our morning data, being called out into the hallway for assistance, trying to answer a real live person’s question in my office and trying to interrupt the neon green walkie talkie’s buzzing dance on my desk - all within the same few minutes - it dawned on me yet again: I could use more limbs. I really could, most days, use a few more arms! One day during this hurried action, a colleague simply asked me how I was doing and I replied with, “I’m fine. I’m an octopus.” You simply need to be an octopus some days. Is it ideal? No. Is it actually good for us or the task at hand to divide our attention span? No. Is it necessary? Yes. For so many of us today, multitasking has become the norm. Whether it is adding to your grocery list on your Notes App on your phone in the middle of a meeting, or typing as someone tries to have a conversation with you, or paying your bills online while you are stirring pasta sauce so it doesn’t burn yet again, while your mother calls and your husband asks where he left his keys….it’s in all of us! We can learn a lot from all animals and in particular, the octopus. Research indicates that the central brain of the octopus doesn’t have to make all the decisions but rather only decides which arm it needs to activate. And just like our eight-limbed animalistic friend of the sea, we too are activating our brains to send action signals to several tasks at once. Octopus can also camouflage themselves by changing their own colours and by imitating other animals to blend into their surroundings…well hello! So many of us can be Octopus-like every day by that definition! Don’t we all, at some points, want to succeed in every situation, want to calm the waters, fit in, belong, and adapt to our differing surroundings? But my hurried friends of 2021, until we grow 28 | Southpoint Living

into our actual sea legs, arms, appendages, etc., let’s take a quick look at what strategies might actually help us turn our attention-dividing actions of multitasking into a more seamless and calm effort which, with every passing day, seems like an ESSENTIAL SKILL:

1. USE TASK APPS: Many apps on our smartphones can make tasks way easier. Some of my favourites are: CAMscanner, Notes App, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Reminders App, Todoist App.

2. DECIDE WHAT IS MOST URGENT NOW: Make lists and then prioritize your lists. My favourite categories for prioritizing are : DO NOW, DO LATER, DO OR DIE. 3. BREATHE: Inhale and exhale deeply before you return to all tasks or people waiting on you. 4. CLEAN LEADS TO CALM: Clear off your work area so that, in addition to the eight tasks begging for your attention, you don’t also have a pile of paper to further distract your sharp focus.

5. KNOW WHEN TO WALK AWAY: When possible,

avoid extra distraction by removing yourself from the hub of the busy source until you check a couple items off your prioritized to-do list. Then return to the action feeling calmer, knowing you have knocked a major task off. AND finally, to really learn the art of the multitasker a la our octopus friends, we really need to remember to calm our worries knowing that in the end, all of the impossibly seeming demands swimming in our direction will eventually all get done. CALM IS IN. SO IS GOLD. SHINE ON FRIENDS!

HEALTHY RESOLUTIONS that are easy to keep

Resolutions focused on improving personal health are especially popular, and for good reason, but even with the best intentions, resolutions have historically proven hard to keep. Simplifying healthbased resolutions can lead to a higher success rate and a healthier you. Here are some suggesions: Eat more whole foods Whole foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains and fish contain nutrients the body needs to function at peak efficiency. They can also help reduce the risk of many diseases and help people maintain healthy body weight. Start slowly by introducing a new whole food to your diet each day. A gradual approach is more manageable than going on a drastic diet. Find a physical activity you like Rather than resolving to join the gym or signing up for a 5K because it’s what everyone else is doing, find a physical activity you truly enjoy and aim to do it a few times a week.

Increase your steps gradually

It’s easy to get preoccupied with the “10,000 steps per day” mantra but it may not be realistic for everyone. Take stock of how many steps you currently take each day and simply try to walk a little more than that.

Spend less time on social media Excessive social media usage can affect relationships, sense of self, sleep, academic performance, and emotional well-being, and it takes up time that could be better spent on other things like engaging in physical activity or quality time with loved ones.

Retracing Family History

When her grandfather was moving into a nursing home in 2009, Leamington native Carly Butler Verheyen’s family discovered a bag of letters that had been tucked away. It turned out to be letters that her grandmother Irene Wiebe, a British war bride, had written to Carly’s grandfather Nick Wiebe, a Canadian soldier.

Carly’s grandparents in the 1980’s and Carly in 2012 standing in front of the Queen Mary, the ship her grandmother travelled on in 1946 when she came to Canada from England.

The more than 100 letters had been written from January to July 1946 while Carly’s grandmother remained in England, waiting to be reunited with her husband after he had returned to Canada. In 2013, Carly took a leave of absence from work and moved to England for six months so she could retrace her grandmother’s steps. And coincidentally enough, the years 1946 and 2013 even lined up to the exact day. Carly hadn’t read the letters thoroughly when they had first been discovered so, after deciding

to take this trip, she waited to read each letter until she was in England. Each Monday, Carly would read that week’s letters and then plan her week according to what her grandmother had done. Throughout the course of her journey, Carly went through a range of emotions, many similar to what her grandmother had felt, and through the course of the letters she even discovered a family secret. “This gave me a chance to better understand where I come from and the stories of those who came before me,” said Carly, who now lives in British Columbia. Carly’s book, Life’s Letter, about her experience retracing her grandmother’s steps, was released on October 30th. It can be found locally at River Bookshop in Amherstburg or for more purchasing options, visit Carly’s website lifesletter.com

Devices are everywhere in the digital age. While they can be a valuable learning tool, excessive use of electronics can put children at risk of obesity, sleep deprivation, depression, addiction, and violence. Here are some ways to establish healthy guidelines for kids using electronics: • Establish a time of day when devices cannot be used and areas of the home where they should not be taken. For example, by establishing children’s bedrooms as screen-free zones, parents can make sure kids aren’t spending all of their time staring at screens when they’re behind closed bedroom doors. • Research apps and programs before installing them on devices. Speak with children’s teachers to determine which apps and programs kids will need for school. Read fellow parents’ ratings before installing any entertainment apps and programs on devices children will use. • Use tech to monitor tech. “Family Sharing” capabilities on Apple devices allow parents to manage devices and screen usage across the household. Parents can add children to their accounts and then set daily time limits on apps children will use and make certain apps off limits to keep kids safe. Other device manufacturers also offer similar tools to help parents effectively monitor and control kids’ device usage. • Encourage new interests. Commit time to activities that do not involve screens, such as hiking, gardening and painting, and frequently encourage children to explore new interests. Exposing children to activities that don’t involve screens is a great way to get them off the couch and away from their devices. And if kids don’t take to a given activity, keep trying new ones until they find something they do like. 32 | Southpoint Living

HOW TO THROW A STRESS-FREE

Soiree

After all, everyone should enjoy the party...including the host!

Mara Derikx

joyfulhostess.com @joyfulhostess

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN

Start by writing a master list of all the to-dos. Break this big list into tasks that you can accomplish two weeks before, one week before, two days before, the day before and on the day. Less cramming and more planning will ensure you’ll be more relaxed when your guests arrive!

LET YOUR PERSONALITY SHINE THROUGH

There are ALL types of parties so be sure your party showcases your own personality. If it feels awkward and fake…everyone will feel it, instantly killing your party vibe.

ASK FOR HELP

START WITH THE END IN MIND

Having a clear vision about WHY you’re hosting and the vibe you want to create is a crucial first step. Ask yourself: is this to celebrate someone/something? To reconnect with friends? To showcase your new kitchen? Will it be a casual potluck, a swanky cocktail hour, a festive brunch? Describing your event in 2-3 words can be helpful. 36 | Southpoint Living

PICK A THEME

A theme provides direction and makes it easier to pick out the rest of your party elements. It doesn’t have to be an over-the-top theme, it can be as simple as picking a colour, or style (like Scandi or Boho). You might even opt for an idea that centers around one of your fave things or take inspo from your menu.

It’s OK to ask for help. Hire a caterer, party planner, decorator or cleaning crew. Consider outsourcing one of your courses. Purchase ready-made options, ask guests to contribute, or enlist family to help. Realizing you don’t have to do it all yourself, takes the pressure off and saves you from exhaustion!

MOST IMPORTANT TIP

Hosting is not about perfection! What matters is creating a space where all feel welcome. It’s about spending time focused on the people around your table, not stressing about what’s on it.
