Editorial GLAM IS BACK. That was the theme for the cover of this issue. With the past few winters being a little cozier and more quiet than we would have liked, we wanted this winter’s cover to represent the many galas and glamorous gatherings that will (hopefully) be happening over the next few months. We don’t know what the future will hold, but whether you’re gathering with five people or five hundred, we hope you’ll get the chance to add a little glamour to your life this winter. Sincerely,

Melissa Hopper

Experiential Travel

A growing number of travellers are looking for authentic local experiences that can allow them to connect with a destination’s culture and environment on a deeper level.

Glam After a few years of sitting dormant, get out your glam attire and make up for lost time.

Entrepreneurship Whether it was because of job loss or as part of The Great Resignation, the pandemic has prompted a rise in people choosing to start their own business.

What’s hot...

Christmas Décor ‘Tis the season to deck the halls and don’t be afraid to go all out this year.

The Canadian Tuxedo The recent Paris Fashion Week saw an influx of Canadian Tuxedos on the runways and in the streets. So gather your favourite denim pieces and put them together to join the fun.

Spicy Cocktails Suits

Sweatsuits are out and power suits are in. Suits resembling those of the ‘80s have made a comeback, and not just for corporate purposes. 6 | Southpoint Living

Cheesy Christmas Movies

There is no shortage of cheesy Christmas movies and they have started running even earlier this year. Despite the fact that many have similar, predictable storylines, they are still a welcome tradition for those who love a happy ending.

For those who enjoy a little heat, traditional cocktails are being taken to the next level with ingredients like jalapeno, horseradish and Tabasco sauce. We recommend the spicy margarita (above).

Purse Essentials Freelance makeup artist and Shoppers Beauty Beautique Cosmetician Katarina Ingratta shares the products she keeps in her purse for touching up her makeup throughout the day. Katarina Ingratta @makeup__by__kat

Lip Oil

Lip oils are great to apply on their own to keep your lips hydrated throughout the day or over top of your lipstick for some shine. My personal favourites to keep in my purse are the Clarins Lip Comfort Oils in shades 01 Honey and 04 Pitaya.

Natural Lipstick

I always have a natural lip on hand. I tend to lean more toward nude/pink lips. One of my favourites is the Clinique Pop Lip Colour & Primer in shade 01 Bare Pop. My top lip liner to pair with this is the Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Liner in shade Fair Neutral Rose.

Setting/Blotting Powder

A pressed powder is a necessity that I always carry with me. I usually reach for the Clinique Stay Matte Universal Blotting Powder to touch up throughout the day. It helps eliminate any excess oil and shine, while giving a blurring effect to the skin.

Blush Stick

Blush is always the first thing to fade on me throughout the day. I find that layering a liquid blush underneath a powder blush really helps with longetivity. On days where I need a touch up, I use the Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm in shade Amp’d Up Apple or Roly Poly Rosy to refresh my makeup and add a bit of colour back to my face. TIP: Use the blush stick on your lips to give yourself a soft flush of colour and the perfect monochromatic look!

I always have a travel perfume on hand. My new favourite perfume is the new Burberry Her Elixir de Parfum. It has notes of strawberry, blackberry, jasmine, vanilla, amber and sandalwood. The perfect fragrance for the upcoming season!

REMEDIES FOR COMMON

Skin Issues

The skin can be affected by any number of conditions and, while many are not overly harmful, certain conditions can affect appearance which may impact a person’s self-confidence. For this reason, many people seek to address skin issues promptly and effectively. Here are some common conditions and some solutions that may help:

Acne

Clogged pores cause acne with the most common reasons being bacteria, hormones, dead skin cells, and excessive oil production. Non-inflammatory acne can be addressed by using salicylic acid, which naturally exfoliates the skin. It is found in cleansers and toners. Inflammatory acne can cause infection deep beneath the skin’s surface and in that case, products containing benzoyl-peroxide may help reduce bacteria and swelling.

Large Pores

Large pores are extremely common and tend to go hand-in-hand with oily skin. It’s best to be gentle with the skin to help minimize the appearance of pores. In addition to cleansing and exfoliating the skin, retinol can also help. It’s a derivative of vitamin A and it can unclog pores and restore the skin’s natural appearance.

Redness

Skin redness may occur for a variety of reasons, including sunburns, allergic reactions, dry skin, acne, and irritations. Identifying the root of redness can help to avoid it going forward. Long-term redness is often linked to seborrheic dermatitis or rosacea and certain medications and skincare products may be recommended by a dermatologist to address these issues. For a quick fix, colour-correcting makeup can help camouflage redness.

Eczema

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that produces red, itchy, dry, and irritated skin. It tends to start in early childhood, and doctors believe an overactive immune system may trigger symptoms. A dermatologist usually treats eczema with over-the-counter antihistamines and OTC or prescription steroid creams.

[ home ]

by Kat Tiessen While some employees who were working from home have gone back to the office full time, others have been able to remain working at home or have a hybrid approach where they work a combination of at home and at an office. If you are currently working from home or plan to set up a home office, here are a few tips on creating an ideal home work space.

Kat Tiessen, Designer Kat & Co. Interiors www.katcointeriors.com

@katandcointeriors DESK Select a desk that can work overtime for you so you don’t have to, like this Axis Desk by Vanguard Furniture. Alone it is a statement piece but adding drawer units under each side saves on floor space and makes this piece functional for those needing files and storage close at hand. SEATING Comfortable office seating can be as beautiful as it is functional. Make sure to look for seating that offers lower back support when required to sit for long periods at a desk. The Boutique Office Chair from Zuo Modern offers support and is attractive. RUG Underfoot, you will want to add a rug that can be easily rolled over by a desk chair but still offer that cozy feeling if you choose to work barefoot. This Birch rug from Surya is a great option as it has a low pile and is made of 100% PET yarn. That’s polyester yarn spun from recycled plastics such as water bottles, which also make this rug pet-friendly as it can be used indoors or out, and is a strong, stain-resistant fibre. 12 | Southpoint Living

LIGHTING Lighting is another important factor to consider when setting up your home office. Not only do you require task lighting but lighting also plays an important roll in creating atmosphere in your work space. Consider adding table and floor lamps along with overhead lighting which will add another layer in creating a cozy work space. The Constance Floor Lamp from Generation Lighting is an attractive piece to have on display in your work space and the Essex Table Lamp from Hudson Valley Lighting brings task lighting where you need it while looking graceful and beautiful at the same time.

ARTWORK & MIRRORS I always add a mirror to every space I design as they are beautiful ways to reflect light around the room. Artwork motivates and stimulates. It should be personal and doesn’t need to match the colours in your room. You just need to love it! Think small desk accessories, a gallery wall of your travel photographs or a large statement piece on one wall. Whatever you choose should mean something to you and inspire you.

VIDEO CONFERENCE BACKDROP Lastly, don’t forget about your video conference backdrop. Set your desk towards the centre of the room using one wall as a backdrop. Go bold and have fun with your backdrop wall. Add an interesting wall finish like wallpaper and you have just made your video screen standout from the rest!

TIPS FOR BETTER BREAKFASTS Hectic mornings compel many people to skip breakfast, but there are many ways to streamline breakfast and still get to school or work on time. The following are some tips to save time and enjoy healthy homemade breakfasts:

Develop a custom granola

Oats, nuts, dried fruits ... mix it all up to make a signature granola blend. It’s easy to eat dry or with milk and make a quick, healthy breakfast.

Embrace the no-cook oatmeal method

Master the art of making overnight oats, which don’t require any cooking. Simply layer oats, Greek yogurt, applesauce (or other fruit purees), cinnamon, and almond milk in a mason jar. Place it in the refrigerator overnight. The oats will get tender without cooking and the meal will be ready in the morning.

Make a smoothie

Do prep work for healthy vegetable and fruit-rich smoothies by chopping and preparing all ingredients the night before. Simply blend with protein powder or oats in the morning with ice.

Put your slow cooker to work

Slow cookers are not just for dinner. Use them to cook a variety of breakfast foods, including oatmeal, eggs or grits. Simply mix up your ingredients, set on low and let the breakfast cook itself overnight.

The Basics of Milk Alternatives Whether for allergy purposes or purely taste preference, milk alternatives are in demand these days. Fortunately there are a growing number of options available for consumers looking for a milk alternative:

ALMOND MILK

Almond milk is a popular and low-calorie alternative to cow’s milk. Before consuming almond milk, individuals should be tested by an allergist to determine if they have a nut allergy.

SOY MILK

Soy milk has long been a popular alternative to cow’s milk. It is lactose-free, making it an ideal option for individuals who are lactose intolerant.

Protecting what matters most to you.

OAT MILK

Oat milk has been trending in recent years. It is plantbased and free of dairy, lactose, soy, and nuts, making it a good option for people with various food allergies. Oat milk typically contains more carbs and calories than other plant-based milk alternatives.

CASHEW MILK

Another nut-based alternative to cow’s milk, cashew milk is low in calories and often fortified with vitamin D and calcium. Cashew milk also is rich in vitamin E.

RICE MILK

Rice milk is a high-calorie alternative to cow’s milk, containing around three grams of fat per cup. However, it can be ideal for people with nut or soy allergies or anyone who is lactose intolerant.

COCONUT MILK

We've got you covered. Business Insurance | Employee Benefits Risk Services | Personal Insurance

519-326-9339 hubinternational.com Leamington | Windsor

16 | Southpoint Living

Though it’s low in calories, coconut milk contains more fat per cup (around four grams) than rice milk. Nutritionists also note that the fat in coconut milk is saturated fat, which can be a concern for people with certain pre-existing health conditions. But coconut milk is plant-based, so it’s a potential option for individuals with dairy and nut allergies.

HOT TODDY Whether you’re feeling under the weather or simply looking to warm up from the weather, a hot toddy may be just what you need. The beauty of a hot toddy is that you can make it however you want it. Simply combine the ingredients in the quantities of your choice and enjoy! INGREDIENTS:

• Whiskey • Hot water • Honey • Lemon • Cinnamon stick (optional)

Assisting you with all your real estate goals.

In only a few decades, Catherine Valle Taylor has accomplished more than many people do in an entire lifetime. The 29-year-old Leamington native is an actress, starting as a child performing in plays at Queen of Peace Catholic Elementary School and the Little Tomato Children’s Theatre, and now acting in a number of short films and feature length films including two that will be screened at this year’s Windsor International Film Festival. She is a dancer and choreographer, starting dance at a young age at the former Rhine Danube Club, taking classes at Nancy Pattison’s Dance World, then dancing competitively for Cardinal Carter Secondary School and Western University, and now serving as co-captain of the Windsor Express Dance Team. She has participated in pageants at a local level, winning 1st runner-up in the Miss Leamington Tomato Festival Pageant in 2010, and also at an international level, representing Canada and finishing in the top 5 of the World University Peace Corps pageant in Beijing, China in 2016. She now serves as a coach to other pageant participants. She has raised money for numerous charities, including hosting the popular Princess Ball event in Leamington that benefited Operation Smile. She is an author, publishing the book Ava Jean’s Wings in 2021 as a way to honour her late daughter who passed away when Catherine was in her second trimester of pregnancy. She is passionate about science, earning her Master of Science from Queens University and a Bachelor of Medical Science from Western University. She also has a YouTube channel called Chemistry With Cat and she tutors high school and university students. Earlier this year, Catherine graduated from Western University earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Jean Rutherford Reekie Graduation Award. She has accepted a nursing position at Erie Shores HealthCare. 18 | Southpoint Living

Q& A

with

Catherine Valle Taylor

What do you love about acting? I love storytelling. I believe stories are healing and can change our world through their lessons or just by broadening our perspectives. When it comes to the actual job, actors have to understand what makes us human, and more importantly, how we as humans respond to the things that happen to us, and I love figuring that out and accessing that within myself.

What was your favourite part of doing pageants? The responsibility of having a voice and setting an example for future generations was something that I did not take lightly in my first pageant at 16-years-old, and it continues to drive a lot of what I do to this day. Now when I look back on it all, I’d say that my favourite part was all the friends I made: girls who were just like me, but from around the globe. We still keep in touch on social media to this day!

Why did you want to become a nurse? I’ve known that I was going to be in the medical field since high school; I loved science - I actually won the subject award one year. After finishing my Masters, I took a step back. During that time I reconnected with acting, songwriting, and modeling, but I was starting to crave a career in medicine again and I knew furthering my education was on the horizon. But what really pushed me into nursing was my miscarriage in 2019. The nurse who took care of me while I was in labour at Mount Sinai Hospital was so incredible. She was competent and knowledgeable when it came to my medical care but also empathetic and comforting in what was the most difficult time of my life. I knew right away that I wanted to learn how to give that kind of comfort and reassurance to others. I am so grateful that Western has a Compressed Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and that I got in in 2020, mid-pandemic. Now, as a registered nurse, I get to help people through some of the toughest days of their lives, both medically and emotionally, and it is extremely rewarding.

How do you juggle everything you are doing? A lot of extra hands! For real, I have a lot of support from my husband, Blake, and my family – without them, I couldn’t do half of what I do. For example, I have a tendency to book myself extremely thin, sometimes sacrificing my sleep, and thankfully Blake will often drive me to where I need to be so that I can take short naps in the car.

What are your plans for the future? I have so many things coming up that I am very excited about! A short film that I star in, ‘The Backhand’ directed by Ken Amlin, is premiering at Windsor International Film Festival in November of 2022, and so far has been accepted to FIVE festivals across North America and is even nominated for a ‘Best Cinematography Award’! I’m very excited for the world to see it and share some laughs. I am also gearing up for the new Windsor Express basketball season in January. You can find me dancing on the court cheering on The Express as one of the dance team captains led by Maggy Sonoski. I will also start filming my first lead role in a feature film in the new year. I can’t say much about it but it is the biggest and baddest role I’ve landed to date! Lastly, as my own personal passion project I’m going to be working on the production and release of the music album I have been writing over the last 4-5 years. It will definitely be a very busy time, but really what makes all this possible, and what I’m looking forward to the most is putting down roots in Leamington with my husband. Like one of my favourite movie quotes says “you can have roots and wings” - Sweet Home Alabama. Southpoint Living | 19

Nike Killshot Shoes

A 35-year-old cult classic sneaker. The classic white/suede Nike Killshot 2 is my go-to sneaker for nights out, business meetings, coffee runs and everything in between. Dressed down or dressed up, it’s just a cool shoe.

MY FAVOURITE THINGS

Chemex Coffeemaker

Hand’s down the best homemade coffee maker money can buy. It’s also one of the most affordable ways to make incredible coffee at home. You can buy a Chemex and filters at Red Lantern in Kingsville. Thank me later.

AirPod Pros 2

With travel picking up again, I love a pair of headphones with good active noise-cancelling functionality. Airpods are the one Apple device that, if I lost, I would instantly replace with zero hesitation.

1970 Land Rover Series 2A

Noah Fleming Fleming Consulting & Co.

Mikkeller Personal Best Non-Alcoholic Beer

I love my completely restored vintage 1970 Land Rover. Purchased during the pandemic, I’m not sure I can ever sell this vehicle. We love cruising the local wine trail in “Landy” and ending our evening with dinner at one of the local wineries.

The perfect beer for those warm days lounging around the pool when 4 PM can’t come quick enough! Omnipollo’s Personal Best is the best non-alcoholic beer I’ve ever had.

The Garage Gym

Garant Wood Splitting Wedge

With cold weather approaching, nothing beats a couple of hours chopping wood for an outdoor fire. A proper wedge allows you to split logs with ease. 20 | Southpoint Living

Physical & mental health is a priority. I’m not sure where I’d be without The Garage Gym in Kingsville giving me my daily 6 AM workout. I’ve been a member of many gyms, and nothing compares to The Garage Gym’s attention to detail regarding training. With locations in Amherstburg, Kingsville, Windsor, and soon-to-be Harrow – there are simply “no excuses”.

Kiawah Island, South Carolina

A true gem just 35 minutes from Charleston. We’ve visited Kiawah a dozen times and will return for New Year’s at The Sanctuary Hotel later this year. Home to world-class golf courses, free-roaming alligators, incredible dining, and a pristine 10-mile beach of hard-packed sand for epic end-to-end bike trips, Kiawah is easily a family favourite.

Winter Reads Book recommendations from the founders of Beautiful Words

Beth, Deanna and Kate founded Beautiful Words Inc. in the summer of 2020, crafting and curating bookmarks featuring questions that facilitate meaningful reflection and conversations about books. For every Beautiful Words bookmark sold, 10% of the proceeds go to the WindsorEssex Community Foundation to support literacy through various non-profits and charities in the local area.

Kate, Beth and Deanna, from left to right

Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier (psychological thriller, contemporary) “When Paris Peralta is arrested in her own bathroom—covered in blood, holding a straight razor, her celebrity husband dead in the bathtub—she knows she'll be charged with murder. But as bad as this looks, it's not what worries her the most.” This was a great slow burn mystery with twists and turns that kept us guessing until the very end. This mystery/thriller almost reads like a family drama and we are here for it! We also loved the diverse characters, the strong, female lead, the Canadian setting and learning about Filipino culture.

Lessons In Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus (humour, women’s literature) “Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. But it’s the early 1960’s and her all-male team at the Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with - of all things - her mind. True chemistry results.” This book is unputdownable! We loved how Bonnie Garmus wove so many complex issues throughout this debut novel that was such a joy to read. We appreciated the perspective of living in the 1960s as a woman of science. Lessons In Chemistry is a quirky, smart, thought-provoking novel that should be on everyone’s to-be-read pile!

Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu

(literary fiction, magical realism, dystopian) “The realm of pretend had only just closed its doors to us, and light still leaked through around the edges. Everything was baffling and secretive then, especially our own bodies, sprouting all kinds of outgrowths that were meant to be hidden, desperately ignored and not discussed, hairs and lumps that could be weaponized against us.” - Liddy, First to Fly

Utterly brilliant! This is THE book to get you out of a reading slump or when you want a quick escape. Each fantastical story in this Giller 2022 Shortlisted collection is short, wildly imaginative, compulsively readable, and strangely twisted. With themes of technological consequences, loss, loneliness, and death, Kim Fu thoughtfully exposes the ‘lesser known monsters’ of human nature with dark wit and razor-sharp precision. An unconventional and addictive read!

When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O’Neill

(historical fiction, LGBTQ) “Every decent friendship comes with a drop of hatred. But that hatred is like honey in the tea. It makes it addictive.”

Set in Victorian-era Montreal, When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O’Neill is a feminist retelling of the French Revolution. A captivating story about two unlikely friends, Marie Antoine, the daughter of a sugar baron, and Sadie Arnett, an unloved daughter of a politically ambitious family, whose intense and competitive friendship boils over to change the course of history. Let’s just say that the story is darkly delicious! As a book club, we confirmed that the opening chapter of the novel is quite possibly the best first chapter we’ve ever read!! This is a story for readers who love larger than life (and morally grey) characters, an unpredictable plot, the absurd, and do not mind sexually provocative scenes. This book offers so much for readers to talk about from the feminist themes to the grotesque allusions; the animals as symbols to the arms-length narrator. If you are familiar with O’Neill’s writing, you know that it is (always) unique, (at times) shocking, and (always) beautifully crafted. When We Lost Our Heads is a real work of art!

TOURING CANADA

Earlier this year, Kingsville’s Katie and Josh Pascoe of the band Fresh Breath embarked on their We’re Driving Everywhere tour, playing shows from the east coast to the west coast of Canada.

Katie and Josh along the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island

As we planned our show schedule during the early winter months of 2022, we both felt extremely hungry to travel. Being kept inside over the last two years only increased our desires to tour and play shows. So when things finally started to open back up, we decided to go for it all. We planned two big tours: one to the east coast of Canada and one to the west. Driving in our 2017 GMC Savana converted camper van with our dog Ruby (a 2-year-old Cairn Terrier), we had about 30 gigs lined up away from home. Here are some of the most memorable places we visited. TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA

Ruby along the Cabot Trail

This small town packs a huge punch. Located centrally in the province, it boasts a 3,000 acre park (Victoria Park) with extensive trail systems, waterfalls and endless nature inspiration. We found ourselves here in between shows and in our down time as often as possible. We also played a show here at Julia’s Lounge, a real local spot featuring daily drink specials and live music every weekend.

Although we didn’t have any shows booked out this way during our visit, we couldn’t resist the epic drive of the Cabot Trail. Because we were there in April, the weather was quite treacherous at times, even leaving us stranded in a snow squall on the side of the mountain at one point. This drive rivals the Rocky Mountains and will test your heart! Bucket list worthy 100%.

Performing poolside at The June Motel

SAUBLE BEACH, ONTARIO

Numerous times during our touring this year we’ve found ourselves in this small beach town. We were lucky enough to have multiple dates at the newly renovated June Motel which was featured on the Netflix show ‘Motel Makeover’. We performed a poolside gig for the motel patrons and public guests on the patio at Heydays Restaurant. We also always make a point to visit the Sauble Falls Provincial Park here and enjoy the crystal clear waters at the beach. Oxford Stomp Music Festival in Calgary

Maja’s Garden Bistro in Mindemoya

MINDEMOYA, MANITOULIN ISLAND, ONTARIO

In the middle of the island in Mindemoya is a special spot called Maja’s Garden Bistro featuring gourmet garden dinner shows where you’re served a four-course meal while being entertained by local and touring acts (like us)! Maja features dinner menus that include the fresh bounties from her incredible gardens and she explains the dishes to you as they’re being served. This is a oneof-a-kind island experience! We’ve been proud to be a part of it for a few years now. It’s always a highlight.

CALGARY, ALBERTA

We were lucky enough to visit here during the Stampede, which brought on all kinds of fun. We played a show in Inglewood at ‘The Attic’ to a rowdy crowd in a modernly appointed loft style bistro, caught a couple of concerts downtown and dipped our toes in the Bow River at the Fish Creek Conservation Area’s sprawling trail system. This city is alive and well with so much to offer.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Some other honourable mentions (Canada has SO much to offer and so many special places): Charlottetown, PEI for its easy going feel and smiling locals. Halifax, NS for the off-leash dog park and beach with extensive trails. Lunenburg, NS for its charm and colours. Kenora, ON for its breathtaking lakes and wildlife. Fernie, BC for its friendly small town feel, epic mountains and refreshing rivers. We’re currently on a mini Ontario tour, heading up to Ottawa and back, with plans in January 2023 to head south to Texas. It’s safe to say we’ve only just gotten our feet wet in 2022. We cannot wait to explore more of this beautiful country and beyond in the future. Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Heading Out On The Highway Earlier this year, 20-year-old Kingsville resident Jackson Ford embarked on a motorcycle road trip throughout the United States and Canada. Below, he shares details of his incredible trip including his favourite locations, issues he encountered along the way, and what he learned from his travels. WHERE:

Jackson’s trip included a stop in Winslow, Arizona

The trip covered twenty states and three provinces, starting from home in Kingsville to the Deep South of the United States then to the Pacific Coast before heading north back to British Columbia. Along the way I visited Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Galveston, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Amarillo, Taos, Sedona, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Victoria, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Banff, Calgary, Big Sky, Sturgis and Chicago.

HOW LONG:

The trip spanned two months and around 17,000 KM.

WHY:

I had been planning on going out to visit my older brother who lives in Los Angeles and considered making a road trip out of it. Then while mapping it out, I figured if I’m riding across America I might as well make the most of it and see as much as I can with the time I had. Given that it was a motorcycle trip, I had to pack very light. I had my saddle bags, backpack, and my tent rolled up strapped to the back and that was it!

FAVOURITE LOCATIONS:

My favourite locations were (not in order) Lake Louise, Grand Canyon, Calgary Stampede, Big Horn National Park, Sturgis, the French Quarter in NOLA, Redwood National Park, Pacific Coast Highway 1, US Route 66 and Big Sur.

ISSUES ENCOUNTERED ALONG THE WAY:

Just over halfway through my trip, I got in a minor accident on Sunset Blvd. at night after being cut off in traffic. Luckily I was in LA already and able to stay with my brother until myself and the bike were ready to be back on the road. As for weather, I was fortunate to only run into rain very seldom and planned my routes accordingly. However, it was very hard to beat the heat in the south as I went through a couple heat waves in Texas and Arizona. Places like Alberta and Montana had strong winds to fight against also.

BEST THING ABOUT THE TRIP:

I think the best thing about the trip was that I set out on this solo adventure with no fear and got to see so many different places that some don’t get to in an entire lifetime. I’ve been told it’s the trip of my life but I’m only 20 years old and all this did was make me more excited for whatever travel plans might be in store next. I also realized with how far I went that there is still so much of the world left out there to explore. I definitely grew as a person and have a different perspective on many things after getting home. 24 | Southpoint Living

TIPS FOR GETTING A TATTOO Advice from one of the best in the biz on what to do before, during and after BEFORE GETTING YOUR TATTOO Once you have an idea of what you’d like to get tattooed, the first step is to find an artist whose artistic style reflects what you’re looking for. Most artists now specialize in a specific style that is often represented in an online portfolio. After finding someone whose work appeals to you, it’s best to contact them to share your idea and see whether they feel they’re a good fit. Don’t be offended if they don’t connect with your concept, though! We’re often very busy and doing our best to accommodate as many requests as we can handle. The most common way to see a cumulative presentation of an artist’s work is by looking at Instagram. Many tattooers will also provide information there on how their booking process works, so it’s helpful to read it over before contacting them. When presenting your idea, referencing photos of similar tattoos and/or artwork can help to better explain what you’re looking for. Your artist will work with you to come up with something you’re both happy with.

Melise Hill

Melise Hill is a tattoo artist originally from Leamington. After studying Fine Art in London, she started her career in 2012 with an apprenticeship under Kris Kani, who owns Eerie Art Tattoo in Kingsville. In 2015 she moved to Michigan and earlier this year she opened her own private studio in Detroit, specializing in full colour neo-traditional style tattooing, focusing primarily on natural and botanical subject matter. 26 | Southpoint Living

Try to trust your artist’s guidance; we have experience with how two-dimensional artwork translates onto the body. And don’t forget, you chose that artist for a reason! Sometimes you’ll be able to see a design before the appointment, but sometimes not until the day of, so if you have a preference, that’s something you’ll want to discuss ahead of time. Other good questions to ask would be about how many hours or sessions your tattoo would require and pricing if you have a budget. You can expect to wait quite a while to land an appointment with an artist who is in demand. But for something that will be on you forever, it’s worth a little patience in the long run!

One of Melise’s recent tattoos

DURING YOUR APPOINTMENT There isn’t much you need to do to prepare on the day of your appointment, other than getting a full night’s rest, eating a good breakfast and staying hydrated leading up to the tattoo.

WHOLESOME FOOD

Depending how long your session will be, it might be smart to bring along a drink or some snacks. Most artists don’t mind chatting while working, but some do like to just focus on their work. It wouldn’t hurt to ask ahead which they prefer. A lot of my clients bring headphones or a book … whatever helps to pass the time!

LOCAL PRODUCE

AFTER GETTING YOUR TATTOO My preferred method of aftercare is Hypafix, a clear, protective bandage that is waterproof and breathable. It locks in your body’s natural healing fluids to quickly and easily heal the tattoo without scabbing. A tattoo will heal in under a week this way, rather than the usual rate of 2-3 weeks. This is my personal recommendation for clients, although each artist has their own methods that they will go over at your appointment. If you’re interested in using an adhesive bandage like the one I use, it can be purchased online and brought with you, but make sure to check with your artist first.

LAST WORDS Getting your first tattoo can be daunting. It’s important that your artist makes you feel comfortable before, during and after. If you don’t like the design, the placement, or just the vibe in general, there’s nothing wrong with walking away and finding another artist who can help you feel good about your tattoo. Doing your research and finding the right person to work with will help to give you the best experience possible!

Potential Warning Signs for Breast Cancer Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women across the globe, and knowledge is vital because it helps women recognize when something does not look or feel good to the touch with their breasts. When women are well acquainted with how their breasts look and feel, they’re in a better position to recognize any abnormalities, which may or may not be indicative of breast cancer. The following are some potential warning signs of breast cancer: A new lump or mass

This is the most common symptom of breast cancer. A lump or mass that is cancerous is often painless, but hard and has irregular edges. However, lumps caused by breast cancer also can be soft, round and tender. Some even cause pain.

Swelling

Some women experience swelling of all or part of a breast even if they don’t detect a lump.

Dimpling

The skin on the breast may dimple. When this occurs, the skin on the breast sometimes mimics the look of an orange peel.

Pain

Pain on the breast or nipple could indicate breast cancer.

Retraction

Some women with breast cancer experience retraction, which occurs when the nipple turns inward.

Skin abnormalities

Breast cancer may cause the skin on the breast to redden, dry out, flake, or thicken.

Swollen lymph nodes

Some women with breast cancer experience swelling of the lymph nodes under the arm or near the collarbone. The presence of any of these symptoms merits a trip to the doctor; however, women with these symptoms should not immediately assume they have breast cancer. Various symptoms of breast cancer also are indicative of noncancerous conditions that affect the breasts. Only a physician can diagnose breast cancer, which underscores the importance of reporting symptoms to a doctor immediately. 28 | Southpoint Living

MOOD If you find yourself in a bad mood, understanding what put you in that mood could be the key to overcoming it. Here are some of the factors that can contribute to how you’re feeling: Lack of physical activity A study found that running for 15 minutes a day or walking for an hour reduces the risk of major depression. That link is likely connected to the release of endorphins triggered by exercise. Endorphins are hormones that studies have shown contribute to a general feeling of well-being, which explains why a lack of physical activity can adversely affect mood. Chronic stress Individuals who find themselves routinely confronting bad moods may be dealing with chronic stress, which not only affects your mood but could also cause physical health problems like heart disease, digestive problems and weight gain. Identifying the source of that stress and speaking with a health care professional about how to reduce and manage it may lead to improvements in mood. Hunger A study from researchers at the University of Guelph found evidence that a change in glucose levels can have a lasting effect on mood, lending credence to the notion that many people feel moody when they don’t eat. Weather Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that adversely affects certain individuals’ moods during winter, when hours of sunlight are fewer than during other seasons, and when temperatures outside can sometimes be extremely cold, keeping people indoors for extended periods of time. Research has found that individuals report greater life satisfaction on exceptionally sunny days than they did on days with ordinary weather. Hey Gurl, I See You... by Mona Taouil Although at the time of writing this piece, as an author I was inspired to use the pronouns ‘she and her’, and the female gender in word choice. However, the meaning encompasses no gender limitations and is meant for all humanity.

Now, living in 2022, during what most people term as “postpandemic,” so many of us are suddenly realizing that while strict protocols and distancing are over, the aftermath felt by the last three years in a pandemic is certainly not. Some of us are trying our best to pick up the pieces and fill the obvious gaps as we try to heal the effects of a pandemic on ourselves, our children, and on each other. At times, most people just need to be seen and heard.

• Hey lady! I see you… how you silently beam with pride at the accomplishments of your kids, your nieces, your nephews… I see you. • Hey gurl like you! I see you… how you want to speak your truth but think again and gulp twice in silence because it doesn’t feel right amongst the company you are in… I see you. • Hey lady! I see you… how you work oh so hard, expose your authentic self, share your truth and humanity, and get it done… I see you. • A gurl like you: I see you… How you are all things to all people while you pray you don’t forget who you are for yourself… I see you. • Hey Mama: I see you… how you ache with fatigue and worry, how you shine with unconditional love for them, how you wonder in their awe, how you squeal with love, how you wish you didn’t agonize, hurt, or worry… I see you. • A gurl like you: I see you… how you fell hard but found your stride, your bounce, your strength, your voice, how you spoke up, showed up, kept going… I see you. • Hey sista! I see you… how you hustle hard for your own prizes, stopped yourself from sharing the gossip, how you held back from adding another layer to the juicy story, how you vouched for the vulnerable underdog… I see you. • Hey Boss! I see you… how you said her name in a room full of opportunities, how you thank above for all you have, how you went without for others, how you helped her up, dusted her off, and moved her along… how you dropped to your knees in prayer, in joy, desperation, in fear… I see you. • A gurl like you: I see you… as you, grow, fall, get back up, stand up, sit down, speak up, shut up, laugh, stay in bed, wonder, question, stay silent, learn, love, laugh and cry… I see you. I see YOU. GURL. WE Are. I AM. SHE Is. A Gurl like you. 30 | Southpoint Living

Ian and Kara Murray know what it’s like to juggle various aspects of life on a daily basis. As a husbandand-wife team owning a small business and parents of six-year-old triplets, they know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to finding a successful balance between work life and home life. Here are their recommendations for others who are trying to do the same.

Ian and Kara with their kids

ALWAYS have a plan and find a system that works. Set ambitious goals to keep moving in the right direction. Break your goals down but always start with an ambitious 10-year picture. What does your ideal look like 10 years from now? From there, determine what needs to happen to get you there and break it down in the next five years; three years; one year; quarterly; monthly; and (for us) weekly goals. If you don’t have a long-term vision, what are you working towards? Align yourself with the right team. You can’t do it alone. Focus on what you’re good at and hire people that fill in the blanks. Work off a schedule. Carve out time for yourself and your family too. Celebrate your daily wins. Focus on how far you have come since you started, not where you should be. As Dan Sullivan puts it, don’t focus on the gaps, keep your attention on all your gains. Exercise daily and fuel yourself with whole foods. Feed your mind and body with nutrition that maintains and elevates the energy and drive that is pushing you forward. Uncover your true core values. What qualities do you and your team need to possess that is the driving force that makes you unique and fuels your company. Surround yourself with people who embody those core values. BONUS: Thinking of working with your spouse? It isn’t for everyone, but we wouldn’t change a thing! As a husband-andwife team, here are some rules that we like to live by: Set your goals together and write them down! What are you trying to build? Are you both aligned on that? Set boundaries. Inevitably, your work life will bleed into your personal space. Write down some rules and establish systems to prevent it from taking over both realms of your life and stick to them. Examples like no more “shop talk” after a certain time and no phones at the dinner table. Get involved in your community. Do things together but also find individual efforts that fuel your passion. Work in different roles and focus on your strengths. You got into business together for a reason – you make a great team; not because you are both amazing at the same things. Write a note on the day you start in business together and be explicit about why you make a great team in the first place. Read it if things get hard. For us, our confidence came from navigating triplet parenthood together. We set some goals around what we wanted our life to look like, the experience to feel like, and decided what our system should be to keep our happiness paramount. We weren’t just surviving, we were thriving. We applied the same logic to our business. Southpoint Living | 31

5 THINGS TO DO BEFORE GUESTS ARRIVE so you can relax!

by Mara Derikx

Mara Derikx

joyfulhostess.com @joyfulhostess Joyful Hostess Mara

The truth is - those last few minutes before guests arrive can be frantic. So much to do and how did it get that late?! By tackling these to-dos 30 minutes before anyone rings your doorbell, you’ll feel more relaxed and your guests will feel like you’re ready to get the party started.

LIGHT THE CANDLES

With their warm and inviting glow, candles can make the everyday feel special. If using scented candles, light them in advance so the fragrance has a chance to disperse before guests arrive. Just be sure you’re not using scented candles in your dining area. Since smell is connected to taste, you don’t want the candle competing with the taste of your food.

SET OUT APPETIZERS

A good habit (and good hosting etiquette) is to make sure that your appetizers are ready to go before guests arrive. Not only does it save you from last minute panic, but it’s another way to make guests feel welcome and appreciated.

WINE PREP

Serving wine for your soirée? Get glasses, wine and your corkscrew ready for action. Forgot to chill your white wine? No problem, wrap the bottle in wet tea towel and pop it in the freezer for 20-25 minutes for perfectly chilled white wine.

TOILET PAPER

It may seem obvious but in the hustle and bustle, sometimes we forget. Save any embarrassing scenes and be sure there’s enough toilet paper in the bathroom and keep extra rolls within easy reach.

GET YOUR PLAYLIST GOING

Don’t overlook the power of music for your celebration! When guests arrive, it’s a great tool for creating the atmosphere AND it helps to fill in any awkward silences. Nowadays, there are so many apps (e.g. Spotify) that make finding ready-made playlists (or curating your own music) super easy. So, get your party mood going ahead of time and press play! 32 | Southpoint Living
