Red

The colour red is making a fiery comeback, and it’s a welcome change after the last few years of neutrals and muted tones. Be it a pair of bright red heels, ruby red lipstick or a burgundy jacket, you will sure turn heads.

Vintage holiday décor The allure of vintage holiday décor lies in its ability to infuse warmth, character and a touch of whimsy into modern celebrations, making it an irresistible trend for those seeking a unique and enchanting holiday ambiance.

Bright colours at home While warm tones like browns and beiges will stay, the trend for 2023 is to incorporate some colour back into your décor. Say goodbye to all whites and greys, and hello to earthy greens, empowering pinks and vintage yellows. Interior designs are aiming for more emotive colours, leaving rooms refreshingly joyful.

What’s hot...

Embracing natural curls

Recently, wavy/curly haired girls are sharing their tips for how to take care of your natural curls and how to bring them out after years of straightening. Tips such as the bowl method, “plopping”, and diffusing.

Sustainable tourism Sustainable tourism aims to strike a harmonious balance between economic development, environmental conservation and social well-being. This includes using sustainable transportation, respecting nature, learning about the local culture, reducing water and energy consumption, and choosing eco-friendly accommodations.

Upcycling & DIY fashion Non-alcoholic drinks Pinterest’s Trend Forecast of 2023 notes that non-alcoholic cocktail searches are up 225%. Many celebrities have been public about their sobriety including Tom Holland, Chrissy Teigen and Blake Lively, with the latter launching her own brand of premium sparkling beverages. 4 | Southpoint Living

Montessori-style furniture A growing number of parents are buying Montessori furniture, referring to a set of specially designed furniture and materials that are part of the Montessori educational approach. These pieces are specifically crafted to encourage a child’s independence, exploration and hands-on learning.

With more emphasis being put on sustainable fashion over fast fashion, upcycling secondhand items and DIY fashion has become popular. Not only is it budget-friendly and good for the environment but it also allows people to unleash their creativity and make a unique fashion statement.

THE PERFECT HOLIDAY MAKEUP

The holiday season is the perfect excuse to add a touch of glitter to your eyes. Apply the Urban Decay Moondust eyeshadow in the shade Space Cowboy all over the lid to amplify any eye look. It makes it look like you put in so much more effort than you actually did. Another favourite glitter eyeshadow formula of mine is the Stila Glitter & Glow liquid eye shadow. The shades Kitten Karma and Diamond Dust are perfect for any holiday makeup look. Finish off your eye look with the Clinique High Impact High-Fi full volume mascara. The gel fibre formula of the Clinique mascara creates intense volume while also being very lightweight.

Add some radiance to your skin this winter season using a glowy primer or foundation. These multi-use products are perfect to use alone or under foundation for an added glow. Get into the holiday spirit with a bold red lip or a glittery gloss. It is the perfect way to add some extra glamour and take your look from day to night. My favourite products are Clarins Joli Rouge Velvet in the shade 742V, a festive red, or Estée Lauder Pure Colour lipstick in the shade 541 La Noir, a perfect cool-toned red. If you’re hesitant to try a red lip, Estée Lauder’s Rebellious Rose is the shade for you. It has a creamy formula that is comfortable to wear and it’s the perfect blend of rose, nude and red to create a mid-tone rose shade that is not as bold as a red lip but still gives definition to your overall look. I also love wearing bolder colours in a glossy formula. The Lise Watier Plumping Lip Gloss Supreme in the shade Extravagance or the Clarins Lip Comfort oil in the shade Cherry are perfect sheer colours to wear this holiday season.

WINTER SKINCARE MISTAKES TO AVOID Winter brings chilly temperatures and dry air, which can take a toll on our skin. It’s important to adjust our skincare routines accordingly to keep skin healthy, hydrated, and radiant. However, there are some common skincare mistakes that many people make during the winter months. Here are winter skincare mistakes to avoid and what you should do instead: MISTAKE: Using hot water for cleansing SOLUTION: While hot showers and baths may be tempting in cold weather, hot water can strip away the natural oils from your skin, leading to dryness and irritation. Opt for lukewarm water when cleansing your face and body to maintain the skin’s moisture barrier.

MISTAKE: Skipping suncreen SOLUTION: Sunscreen is not just for the summer months. UV rays can still damage your skin during winter, especially when reflected by snow. Make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily to protect your skin from harmful rays.

MISTAKE: Over-exfoliating SOLUTION: Exfoliation is important to remove dead skin cells, but overdoing it can cause redness, sensitivity, and dryness. Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week, and choose gentle exfoliants to avoid aggravating your skin during the winter.

MISTAKE: Neglecting hydration SOLUTION: While skincare products are essential, don’t forget to hydrate your body from within. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. You can also incorporate hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and citrus fruits into your diet.

MISTAKE: Not protecting your lips SOLUTION: Your lips are susceptible to dryness and chapping during winter. Don’t forget to protect them with a moisturizing lip balm that contains ingredients like shea butter or beeswax. Apply lip balm throughout the day and before bed to keep your lips soft.

MISTAKE: Ignoring body care SOLUTION: Remember to take care of your body as well. Apply a nourishing body lotion immediately after showering to lock in moisture and prevent dryness.

Winter Fashion Must-Haves

As the temperatures drop, it’s time to bundle up in style and embrace the magical season of winter.

Knit sweaters

Knit sweaters offer comfort and style. Neutral tones like cream, gray and camel are timeless classics, while more vibrant shades can add a pop of colour to your winter wardrobe.

chunky boots

Chunky boots provide excellent traction on slippery surfaces and add a touch of rugged elegance to your outfits. Opt for boots made of waterproof materials to survive the winter elements.

OVERSIZED COATS

Embrace the chilly weather in style with an oversized coat that combines fashion and functionality. Look for longline coats or cocoon coats in luxurious materials to keep you cozy and chic. 8 | Southpoint Living

OVERSIZED SCARVES

Oversized scarves act as a cocoon keeping you warm. Have fun with different textures and patterns, and pair with a coat or layer over a sweater.

leather alternatives

For those looking to embrace sustainability and cruelty-free fashion, faux leather jackets or vegan suede skirts not only keep you warm but also give an edgy touch to your outfit.

KNIT HATS

Knit hats not only keep you warm, but they also add a touch of personality to your outfits, making you look fabulous while braving the winter chill. From chunky cable knits to pom-poms to slouchy beanies, there’s a knit hat out there for everyone.

Designer Kat Tiessen shares her expert advice. Kat Tiessen, Designer Kat & Co. Interiors www.katcointeriors.com

by Kat Tiessen I am planning a kitchen and bathroom renovation. What is popular for cabinetry style and colours?

Kitchen and bathroom renovations are so much fun to plan! Whether I am designing a kitchen or a bathroom, I like to start with the layout first, then I work into how the finishes (cabinet style, colours, countertops, etc.) will play into the plan. While attending the 2023 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS 2023) in Las Vegas, I saw a lot of beautiful kitchens but they all catered to a mood, rather than a trendy or popular colour of finish for the cabinetry. For cabinetry colours, mixing is the name of the game. Painted cabinetry mixed with wood tones is most favourable. Off-white cabinetry paired with light wood tones seems to be the most common choice currently, but black is really seeing a resurgence too. Black painted cabinets and black stained wood were present at many vendors throughout the show. With the painted black wood, it was great to see the beautiful grain texture still shine through the black stain. With both kitchens and baths, there was a lot of mixing of colours, textures and finishes. Pretty much anything goes these days! Vendors featured striking elements like textured metals, textured wood or even stone looks with texture. And waterfall countertops are becoming more common in both kitchens and bathrooms. Stone faced doors and drawers were also seen at a few dealers throughout the show. The effect is very modern and clean. Watch for that to be more prominent in luxury designed spaces. As you can see from these images, there is no one style or colour that leads the kitchen and bathroom design trends but instead you should have fun mixing colours, finishes and textures. 10 | Southpoint Living

Memorable Stay Hosting overnight guests this holiday season? Here’s how to make their stay a memorable one!

Mara Derikx

joyfulhostess.com @joyfulhostess Joyful Hostess Mara

COMMUNICATION

Whether it’s family, friends or out-of-town visitors, hosting overnight guests is a special opportunity to strengthen bonds and create lasting memories. To make the experience enjoyable and stress-free for everyone, here’s some tips to help you host with ease and make their stay unforgettable.

Before guests arrive, send them a welcome message that also includes important info like directions, parking and any other details they need to know. This way you can be sure it’s a smooth arrival and sets the tone for a wonderful stay.

HOUSE TOUR

Take a moment to show guests around. Familiarizing them with the kitchen, bathroom and any quirks your house may have (like the tricky shower faucet) can help prevent awkward moments later on.

WELCOME BASKET A basket with a welcome note and a few goodies adds a special touch to your guests’ overnight stay. Consider including water bottles, fun snacks and cozy socks or slippers. If you’re planning excursions/sightseeing, include that info along with the itinerary.

14 | Southpoint Living

COMFY SLEEP

To help guests get a good night’s sleep, make sure the guest room (or sleeping area) is clean and comfortable. Fresh sheets, extra blankets and fluffy pillows are a must.

OFFER TOILETRIES

Prepare the bathroom your guests will be using by including things like a hair dryer and stocking up on any items they may have forgotten, like toothpaste/toothbrushes, dental floss, lotion, etc. Not only is this super helpful for guests, it also saves you from rummaging around to find items at the last minute.

EXTRA TOWELS

Take a cue from boutique hotels and set extra towels on the bed for guests to use. Make it pretty by adding a simple sprig of lavender or eucalyptus on top.

MEAL TIME

TECHNOLOGY

We live in a digital age, so offering the use of a phone charger and including a note with your WiFi password is a thoughtful way guests can stay connected without having to ask.

Ask guests about any dietary restrictions or allergies. Knowing in advance makes prepping easier for you and it makes your guests feel valued and cared for. Keep in mind, meals can be as elaborate as a homemade brunch or as simple as ordering in from your fave pizzeria – the point is that you enjoy your time together.

MAKING SPACE

Depending on how long guests are staying, clearing some closet space or setting aside a few drawers can help them feel more at home and organized during their stay.

RESPECT THEIR PRIVACY

While it’s important to be a gracious host, it’s equally crucial to respect your guests’ privacy. Letting them have some downtime to relax or do things on their own is as important as being together.

Finding the perfect hair products

It’s not easy but when you do, it’s one of the greatest feelings. Currently mine is Silkening Gloss by Kenra or Kenra Blow Dry Spray. I have super, super frizzy and unruly hair. I love these products to control the frizz and add shine.

I have two doggies: Lumin is an 11-yearold Maltese and Lizzie is a 3-year-old Morkie. We love doggie cuddles at our house!

I am blessed with a huge family. I have two siblings - my brother Stephen and sister Kerri. I also have six sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-laws, six nephews (one nephew-in-law), eight nieces, two great-nieces and two great-nephews. My family is very important to me and the memories we make together are treasured.

Owner, Reflections Hair Salon

My husband Anthony and I both work full-time and are very busy with our careers. So when we get up on a Sunday and it’s raining, we take full advantage. We’ll make a coffee and watch a movie on the couch with our girls. It’s simple and relaxing.

Need I say more? Add a splash of vanilla almond milk creamer and I’m in heaven. 16 | Southpoint Living

In 2015, we welcomed our first daughter, Juliana, to the world and our second daughter, Ava, came into our lives in 2018. They are the light of my life! Parenting is one of the hardest and most rewarding things I’ve ever done.

In 2004, I stepped into my career as a hair stylist. In 2010, I purchased Reflections hair salon and 19 years later I can honestly say I love what I do every day. I believe I work with some of the best stylists around. Working 40 plus hours a week with these ladies is always a blast. Shout-out to Dana, Dani, Jolynn, Allison, Grace, Nikki and Hannah!

Staying active during winter! The following residents share how they like to stay active during the winter months. Eric Prudence

Karen Dunn and Kristi Kennedy Even though summer wins as our favourite season, we do love the crisp winter weather and what it has to offer. Wintertime allows us to enjoy some of the best outdoor activities. We love to take long walks with the best walking partner, our dog Finn. We frequent wide-open spaces such as Wheatley Provincial Park, Kennedy Woods and Kingsville Golf & Country Club. We play hockey twice a week in leagues at local rinks and if we’re lucky, we can play outdoors as well, IF the lake freezes, which is not always guaranteed. Other fun activities which we love are tobogganing with friends (you’re never too old for belly laughs while flying down a hill), enjoying outdoor fires in our snowsuits and toques with a few cold ones! Of course, those snowy Sundays also call for cozy comfort foods at our fave Kingsville breakfast spot, Jim’s Sub Shop. 18 | Southpoint Living

The winter season is the best time to get outside and enjoy what Wheatley and Leamington have to offer. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to skate on an outdoor pond just steps off my back porch. Wheatley Provincial Park has always been a go-to for ice skating, hockey games and everything in between. There is truly no better feeling than skating on an outdoor pond with friends and family. Wheatley and Leamington are also lucky enough to have two awesome arenas, both offering public skating and ice rentals throughout the winter season. Whether it’s spending time at the rink or out at the pond, these are two fun options for staying active during the winter season.

Aaron, Heather, Jaxson, Liam and Harrison Hutchinson With three young boys, we have no trouble staying active in the winter. Two of our boys play Southpoint Minor Hockey (Jaxson and Liam pictured right), so most of our weekends are spent in arenas. When we’re not at the arena, our boys love playing hockey on our homemade ice rink in the backyard – what’s more Canadian than that? When we’re not playing hockey, our family likes to go tobogganing at Seacliff Park in Leamington or the Two Creeks hill in Wheatley. The boys especially love our Point Pelee beach walks in the winter. They love to check out the big “hills” of ice that the lake has pushed onto the beach. We like to play in the snow in our yard and getting some good old fashioned fresh air in any way we can!

Crissa Kudroch When I think of winter, I think of Christmas and the endless amenities this season brings us. This year with our daughter, just over the age of 1, we are looking forward to the Christmas light displays in the surrounding parks and neighborhoods, visits with Santa at local establishments, and to our annual Christmas tree cut down at Coppola Tree Farms! Remembering to keep my body active during the winter months is also important to me. I participate in a few Hot Yoga and Pilates classes a week at Green Yoga studio and if the weather allows, I make time to hike the Point Pelee trails with my dog Pinot! Hoping this year, we will get our daughter into her first pair of skates and hit the rink for family skate days at the arena(s). During the cold evenings you will find me keeping warm with the season’s new flavours at our local breweries and restaurants. It’s all about balance!

Debbie Pigeon

Growing up on a farm as kids, we were always outside - riding bikes in summer and building snow forts or skating on the pond in the winter. We loved every minute of it! Now being a Nana, I love doing the same things with my grandkids. I am very fortunate to live in an area where I am able to get out and walk daily year-round. I love taking advantage of the Greenway as well as the pedestrian/bike paths around town.

Protecting what matters most to you.

Abbruzzese Family During the winter months, you’ll likely find our family riding around on our property either on the four-wheeler or with all the littles piled in the toboggan going for a quick ride. Snowball fights followed up with a nice cup of hot chocolate by our wood fireplace are also a huge hit. But our absolute favourite is learning to skate on the creek so we can play hockey one day with our more experienced neighbours! With four children aged four and under, we’ve learned to enjoy the simple joys that our backyard offers and pray for “thecolder-the-better” weather so we can enjoy the winter days to their fullest.

DISNEY TRAVEL TIPS

The Clark family are frequent travellers to Disney, having been 20 times. Kelly Clark shares tips for visiting the most magical place on Earth. Planning a trip to Walt Disney World can seem overwhelming but a little bit of research and planning will go a long way. My daughters Madisyn and Jordyn and I have been travelling to Disney for about the last 12 years, and the magic that was Disney for them as children is the same magic they feel as adults. While we are not Disney experts, we are happy to share some of our go-to tips to hopefully help make your next Disney trip as magical and stress-free as possible.

Madisyn (left) and Jordyn in the Magic Kingdom on the Hub Grass.

DISNEY PROPERTY PERKS First off, we always stay on Disney property. As well as enhancing the overall experience, if you stay on Disney property you have access to all Disney transportation, early access to the parks and extended access to dining reservations. Walt Disney World has three modes of transportation (bus, monorail and skyliner) to get from your resort to the parks, Disney Springs and other resorts. So no need to rent a car or pay for additional parking. Staying on Disney property allows guests to enter each park half an hour earlier than all other guests. This affords resort guests an advantage to getting on their “must-do” rides. Getting up early and being one of the first park guests gives you an opportunity to “rope drop” your mustdo ride and avoid paying for an Individual Lightning Lane Pass. Once in the park at rope drop, head straight to your desired ride and get on with little to no wait.

Jordyn (left), Kelly (centre) and Madisyn at the Boardwalk Resort.

20 | Southpoint Living

DINING RESERVATIONS If you plan on dining during your stay, dining reservations open 60 days before your first day of arrival. As a resort guest you can book dining for your entire stay at the opening of your arrival window, giving guests

Left to right: Grandpa Grant Snary, Madisyn, Grandma Melodie Snary, Jordyn and Kelly at the Animal Kingdom.

an advantage to securing those hard-to-get dining reservations. DISNEY WEBSITE Peruse the Disney website (disneyworld.disney.go.com). There, you will find lists and photos of all Disney resorts, lists and descriptions of every attraction (ride or show) including ride restrictions, show and parade times, and everything else Disney you may need to know. DISNEY APP Download and get acquainted with the My Disney Experience app. This app can be used for booking rides, ordering food in the parks, viewing maps that show ride waiting times, park hours, modifying park reservations and even checking out your own merchandise at certain shopping locations. There is also a tip guide that can help plan your day with a few clicks of a button. RIDES Watch rides on YouTube so you can determine if certain rides are appropriate for your family. The Disney Tourist Blog is also a great resource for everything Disney from upcoming discounts to how to navigate with Genie+. Genie+ is a fast pass system for most rides. While Walt Disney World can be done without Genie+, we would highly recommend first-time visitors or those who are taking a once in a lifetime trip to take the plunge and budget for and purchase Genie+. It can add quite a cost, anywhere from $15-$30 per person per day depending on when you travel, but Genie+ gives you the opportunity to ride more rides and see more shows without have to wait in long lines. The more popular attractions like Peter Pan’s Flight and Kilimanjaro Safaris often see wait times of 120 minutes or more throughout the entire day. The My Disney Experience app makes navigating the ins and outs of Genie+ much easier and there are plenty of YouTube videos on how to get the most out of Genie+ for your money.

Madisyn pin trading at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

Each park has a ride or two that are not accessible through Genie+ and require additional payment (Individual Lightning Lane Pass) if you want to surpass a long wait time. PIN TRADING Pin trading is one of my girls’ favourite activities to do while at Disney. Disney pin trading is a fun experience where Disney guests can trade pins with cast members and other guests. Although pins can be expensive if you buy them at one of the parks or your resort, Amazon offers used pins that are authentic and can be traded in the parks. You can even have the pins delivered to your resort and they will be waiting for your pickup upon your arrival. There are pin trading boards in several locations throughout all the parks and resorts providing ample options for trading to get your favourite character or ride in pin form. OUR BEST ADVICE The best piece of advice we would offer is to realize that one cannot do and see everything in a single trip. This is how Disney keeps fans coming back. Pick a handful of “must-dos” at each park and just enjoy the rest. Take breaks during the day to get out of the Florida heat and rest your feet. Instead of going sunup to sundown in the parks, take your little ones (and big ones) back to the resort for a mid-day swim and possibly even a quick nap. This will refresh everyone and make evening fireworks much more enjoyable. Disney is not just rides and parades, it is an experience. From the resort staff going above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable, the bus driver greeting your prince or princess with a smile, the Mickey shaped snacks, the character meet and greets, to the smells of Disney (yes Disney has its own smells). If you take the time to relax and enjoy, we’re certain you too will think Disney is the most magical place on earth. Southpoint Living | 21

The Power of Breath Control

By Anna Matheson

Breathing is an automatic process we often take for granted, but it also has the incredible ability to influence our nervous system. By consciously controlling our breath, we can shift the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, promoting relaxation and overall wellbeing.

Breathing Techniques for Nervous System Regulation The following are three different breathing techniques that can help regulate the nervous system: Diaphragmatic Breathing Also known as belly breathing, this technique involves breathing deeply into your diaphragm rather than shallowly into your chest. To practice, place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your abdomen to rise as your lungs fill with air. Exhale slowly, feeling your abdomen fall. This exercise engages your diaphragm, strengthening it and promoting efficient oxygen exchange.

Anna Matheson annasasana.com @annas.asana

4-7-8 Breathing This technique focuses on extended exhalation to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. Inhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold the breath for a count of 7, and exhale for a count of 8. This pattern calms the mind and encourages relaxation. Box Breathing Also known as square breathing, this technique is simple yet effective. Inhale slowly for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and then pause for 4 before repeating the cycle. This method not only regulates the nervous system but also enhances focus and clarity.

Incorporating Breathing Techniques into Your Routine To truly reap the benefits of these techniques, consistency is key. Consider integrating them into your daily routine: • Mindful Moments - Dedicate a few minutes each day to practice diaphragmatic breathing. Find a quiet space, sit comfortably, and focus on deep, slow breaths that expand your belly. • Pre-Exercise Routine - Incorporate breathing exercises into your pre-workout routine. This can help prepare your body for physical activity and optimize the oxygen supply to your muscles. • Mealtime Relaxation - Before meals, take a few moments to engage in mindful breathing. This can help shift your body into a restful state, allowing for better digestion and potentially reduced overeating. • Bedtime Ritual: End your day with a calming breathing exercise to unwind and signal to your body that it’s time to rest. Improved sleep quality can positively impact your weight management journey. 24 | Southpoint Living

THE IMPORTANCE OF STRETCHING Regardless of your age, stretching is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. It not only keeps your muscles flexible and strong but also helps prevent injuries, improves posture and promotes overall well-being. Here are five beginner-friendly stretches that you can incorporate into your daily routine. However, please note that it’s important to be mindful of your body’s limitations and stop any exercise that causes pain, discomfort or unusual sensations. Every person’s body is unique, and what works for one individual may not work for another. If you have any concerns or questions about stretching or your overall health, it is strongly recommended to consult a qualified medical professional.

NECK STRETCH

SHOULDER & CHEST STRETCH

BUTTERFLY STRETCH

Sit or stand tall with your shoulders relaxed. Gently tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear closer to your shoulder. You should feel a gentle stretch along the side of your neck. Hold for 15-30 seconds and repeat on other side.

Stand tall with your feet hipwidth apart. Interlace your fingers behind your back, straightening your arms. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and gently lift your arms. Hold for 15-30 seconds, feeling the stretch in your chest and shoulders.

Sit on the floor with your back straight and the soles of your feet touching. Hold your feet or ankles with your hands. Gently press your knees toward the floor. Hold for 15-30 seconds, feeling the stretch in your inner thighs and groin.

CALF STRETCH

STANDING FORWARD BEND

TRICEPS STRETCH

Stand facing a wall, with one foot forward and the other foot back. Keep your back leg straight and your heel on the ground. Lean forward, placing your hands on the wall for support. Hold for 1530 seconds, feeling the stretch in your calf muscle.

Stand with your feet together. Slowly bend forward from your hips, reaching towards the ground. Allow your head and neck to relax. Bend your knees slightly if needed. Hold for 15-30 seconds, feeling the stretch in your hamstrings and lower back.

Raise an arm overhead. Bend the elbow, reaching your hand down towards the opposite shoulder blade. Use your opposite hand to gently push on the bent elbow. Hold for 15-30 seconds. Repeat on the other side.

Lots To Do For Area Seniors

The three communities of Wheatley, Leamington and Kingsville have plenty to offer seniors when it comes to activities, socialization and help with many services.

plus come to have fun, socialize and stay young,” says Lehn. “We are continuously looking for ways to improve programming and take direction from our members.”

The community centres in all three towns offer an array of things to socialize around — be it games, exercise, tech help or health-related sessions, keeping people active in the meantime.

The Half Century Centre is located at 160 Talbot Street East, Leamington and is open weekdays 9am to 4pm with some special events in the evening.

LEAMINGTON At the Leamington and District Half Century Centre, Executive Director Christine Lehn keeps the membership hopping with a flurry of regular activities and occasional special gatherings. There are regular days for games of euchre, pepper, bridge and cribbage if cards are your thing. They also offer chair yoga, darts, line dancing, billiards and cornhole — a new game recently introduced at the club. Combine those activities with art group, band, Tuesday lunches and the always on-the-go jigsaw puzzles, and there is lots to do. Services they offer include library, foot care, Parkinson’s support group, MTO Seniors Driver’s License renewal (by appointment) and special nights such as murder mystery, fashion shows, trips to Petrolia Playhouse and the annual chili cook-off. Membership is for people age 50 and over, and they currently have 223 active members with 13 of them being 90+. Cost is $45 annually and most activities are $2 to participate, with yoga and line dancing costing a little bit more. “The Half Century Centre is a place where people 50-

KINGSVILLE The Kingsville Community Centre offers various types of programming as well as a café where people can mingle before or after they enjoy their activity. You can grab a coffee, read the paper, volunteer or just enjoying being in the community amongst peers. They also have a large community garden that participants can help care for and share in the bounty. Kimberly DeYong is the centre’s Program Director and she says the centre is growing in popularity with visitors. “We host various agencies and organizations, providing space for them to engage our participants with even more services such as hearing screening, balance assessments and more,” she says. “Agencies such as Westover, Alzheimer’s Association, Brain Injury Awareness, South Essex Community Centre and more run programming specific to their services here at the centre.” Most of their programs are offered during the day and as such are geared to a senior crowd but there is no age restriction to participate. Most programs are offered for free. Some classes have a fee to help cover the cost of materials. Tai Chi with Greg Hutton is one of the most popular programs at the centre. The Kingsville Community Centre operates primarily at 1860 Division Rd. N., at the rear of the Kingsville

Money Tips For Retirees

“The Kingsville Community Centre is an inviting space where folks can share their interests and learn new things,” adds DeYong. “Everyone at the centre is welcoming and happy to make new friends.”

Effective money management during retirement is critical. Here are some money management tips to help ensure financial stability:

WHEATLEY The Wheatley Friendship Club is located in the old Wheatley Public School on Erie Street North and offers an array of programs and activities for residents and visitors.

• Minimize unnecessary expenses by reviewing and adjusting your spending habits regularly.

Program Director Noelle Robinson says that a number of programs are available for those 55-plus. From darts, euchre, cornhole, bingo, to pepper, cribbage and other games, to quilting, chair yoga, foot care clinics and technology help, there is something for everyone. In addition, they have a Zoom presentation series where several interesting topics are discussed.

• Create a realistic budget that aligns with your retirement income and expenses.

• Diversify your investments to reduce risk and ensure a stable income stream. • Stay informed about tax implications and take advantage of deductions and credits available to retirees. • Stay vigilant against financial scams and fraud targeting retirees and seniors. • Seek professional financial advice from a certified financial planner specializing in retirement planning.

Membership is $10 per year and each activity carries a small nominal fee for those in attendance. “We are a part of the ‘Wheatley Strong’ community, and when our community needs our support we step up and open our doors,” says Noelle. “For example, the many societies around town like the Legion, Horticultural Society, Heritage Society, and the Guardian Pharmacy. We have a big heart.” The Friendship Club is open Mondays 9am – 2:30pm, Tuesday 1:30pm - 4pm, Wednesday 9am - 12:30pm, Thursday 9am - 3:30pm and Friday 9am – 3:30pm and can be reached at 519-825-4870.

Catching up with Erle Nash The former owner of Nash Tours shares memories of the well-known travel business. Life has come full circle for Erle Nash. The friendly, active 90-year-old still makes his way around to senior centres in the area to play his music, which he’s been doing lovingly for many years. He and his late wife Evelyn were local travel experts, wellknown within the travel and bus tour industry. But according to Erle, he wasn’t always a fan of hitting the road. “Hated travel,” he said when we recently sat down with him at his Leamington residence. “If I went away for a week or three days, I was wanting to be home.” Despite the dislike of being on the road, Erle and Evelyn’s travel careers got rolling when Erle began driving school bus for C.A. Bailey.

Erle Nash

“The first year, I think we had a total profit of $45,” he says. “But then it branched out and went from one-day trips to 30-day trips.” Erle says they’ve seen most of North America through those trips, which he and Evelyn planned and executed according to the wishes of the passengers. “We went through Prince Rupert (B.C.) and got on the ferry and went up through the inside passage,” he said. “We’d put the bus right on the ferry.”

“I had other jobs as well, because that didn’t put groceries on the table,” he said.

From the time they started the business to the time they wrapped it up, Erle says they put a lot of miles behind them with trips to Nashville, Renfro Valley, the west coast, east coast, Florida and Texas.

Then C.A. Bailey bought a touring-type bus and started running day tours and eventually asked Erle to be a driver.

“I drove the bus in every state except Hawaii and every province in Canada plus the Yukon,” says Erle.

“They would send me off in one of those buses, you know, to do whatever trip to Toronto or whatever,” he said. “Being a country music fan, I suggested a trip to Nashville.”

He says they started the business with practically no knowledge of the industry but saw some things from other tour companies that they copied and other things they were able to improve upon.

Between the bus company and Erle, they made plans for a bus trip to Nashville and Erle posted the trip in the window at the dime store he owned in Wheatley. “That first trip sold out in two days,” he said. “We had 40 people, so we planned one for the week after and it sold out in two days too. That was the start of Nash Tours and Travel.” Erle realized he had to move quickly, because the government was putting new restrictions on selling travel packages, which meant you had to be licensed and bonded. He quickly got licensed and bonded, and was up and running for very little cost. 28 | Southpoint Living

“It seemed to me that people weren’t people on those trips,” he said. “They were just a herd of cattle and somebody was a shepherd and was driving them around. So, we based our trips on giving people what they wanted to have.” Erle says the planning out of hotel rooms and different attractions was a lot of work but the customers always enjoyed themselves and were not hit with any hidden or surprise fees when all was said and done. After the dime store on Talbot Street burned in 1975, Erle and Evelyn relocated the travel business down the street to where Renny’s Smokehouse is now located.

He says people enjoyed their tours so much they kept coming back. “We had no trouble with people,” he says. “And as small as our business was, we had no trouble finding companies and hotels to deal with. They all wanted us.” They started in 1973 and finally wrapped it up in 2002 when Erle’s eyesight started to fail. “I had a good partner,” he says. “Evelyn worked hard. We went together on bus tours for a long time until my vision wouldn’t let me drive anymore.” He says things have changed drastically in the travel business, and the COVID pandemic pushed a lot of smaller businesses out of the industry. “When COVID hit, everybody in the tour bus business was out of business in a heartbeat,” he added. “I really feel sorry for those that were still in business because they’ve had an awful struggle to get back.” Although they’ve been out of the business for over 20 years, Erle says he still runs into people whose parents took trips with them.

“I was in my 40s when we started the business and we mostly took seniors who were 60 and up, so most of them have passed on,” he says. “But I meet people once in a while who say their mom and dad went with us or their grandparents went with us.” Erle says the miles put on driving the bus were worth it. Erle and Evelyn celebrated their “It was fun but it was hard 65th anniversary in 2016. work,” he said. “You have to plan for 40 people and think ahead to the condition of the roads.”

Even though the road was good to him, he says he’s content with staying close to home. “At my age I don’t travel too far,” he says. “We take a day trip once in a while.”

Christmas toys of old

As the holiday season fast approaches, us Baby Boomers are often dealing with what gifts to give our grandchildren. While most are asking for the latest electronic gadget or game, many of the girls will be looking for Barbie this year, seeing the popularity of the movie. Barbara Millicent Roberts was born - or rather introduced to the public - on March 9, 1959. For those of us who grew up in the late ’50s and early ’60s, Barbie was always one of the top choices out there at Christmas gift giving time. And while she didn’t make it onto my list on any of those formative years, I had countless female cousins and school mates who were well into the Barbie craze. With Mattel hitting it out of the park with the girls in 1959, Hasbro answered the call on February 2, 1964 with the introduction of GI Joe. I was lucky enough to get one of the first Joes and still have it today, tucked away in a closet. GI Joe has been through many incarnations over the years but mine — who still poses but is totally naked — has the smooth hard plastic finish. Later they introduced Joe with a short beard and a little more pliable skin. I likely had five or six different outfits at one point and distinctly remember a SCUBA apparatus of some sort, along with army helmets, guns and other accessories. Of course, this was long before the TV shows and movies took GI Joe in other directions. Do you remember the See and Say that taught you animal sounds? Or how about Etch-A-Sketch or Viewmaster? As a kid of the ’60s, I fell for the TV commercials and asked for a big toy each and every year. My older brothers at some point had acquired the rod style table hockey game so I never had to ask for that. I did, however, ask for the Coleco electronic football game. As you opened the box, you saw this football field fashioned much like the table top hockey game but with the field made of metal. You plugged your field in and then positioned all of the plastic players on the field. A tiny plastic magnetic football was given to the player whom you wanted to have the ball. Then you turned the game on and the whole field vibrated, and all of those plastic players — including the one with the ball — started moving. 30 | Southpoint Living

Eventually your running back would find his way to the goal line. Something like watching the Detroit Lions these days.

RIB’S RAMBLINGS Mark Ribble

It wasn’t really very electronic. It was just electric. As that fad went by the wayside, I went through a number of toys that I just had to have. From action games like Battling Tops to imagination toys like the Best of the West series of action figures — I had them all. I remember getting Johnny West and Geronimo at the same time and playing with them for hours. The two things I constantly asked for that I never got were Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots and the board game Mouse Trap. Mom always said that Mouse Trap took too long to put together and she never gave me a reason why Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em wasn’t for me. That’s okay because I eventually got my hands on some Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots once my kids came along and was able to yell “you knocked my block off ” on a few occasions. So many kids of the day asked for so many different things for Christmas. Some wanted Mr. Potato Head back when you had to supply your own (real) potato. Others asked for a Slinky or Play Doh or even Silly Putty. Lincoln Logs were big with the younger crowd at one time. Matchbox cars and later Hot Wheels were a big part of my childhood and that orange flexible Hot Wheels track was usually strewn all over the house. I even had the Kenner Smash Up Derby set where you had two plastic cars with many detachable parts and smashed them together and watched parts fly everywhere. They had plastic rip cords that each person inserted into the roof of the car and then pulled out, which propelled them into each other. Fun times! No matter what your choice of toy may have been back then, I think we can agree that most of the toys required a good dose of your imagination. I don’t see that as much in the grandkids’ toys these days. Times sure have changed.
