Passing of the torch – from one editor to another

It’s the end of an area, so to speak, at the Southpoint Sun newspaper office. Longtime editor Sheila McBrayne has decided to leave the newspaper business and will be handing over the reigns to Mark Ribble. McBrayne graduated from Niagara College’s Journalism-Print program in 1990, and landed a job right away with her hometown paper, The Ridgetown Dominion. On getting the itch to write, McBrayne said, “My Grade 7 teacher, Mrs. Anderson, told me not to worry about my failing grade in math and gave me the best advice ever: You’re a good writer. You should be a writer. So that’s what I did.”

Happy New Year?

I don’t often look back at previous columns, but yesterday, I took the time to read what I wrote in the last edition of 2019. I talked about feeling old and how much I enjoy my grandchildren and pretty much wished everyone a Happy New Year, wishing them the best for 2020. Little did we know…. It certainly causes you to stop and think about what this world has been through over the past few months. As I write this, my father-in-law is in a palliative bed at Met Hospital in Windsor. My wife has not seen her father since the end of October. He entered hospital in the Alzheimer’s Unit (6th floor North) on November 2, with the hope that treatment for a bad urinary infection and adjustment of some of his medications would limit the number of nighttime outbursts he was having at home. We thought it was a good thing, and would give my mother-in-law some relief from her regular struggles of trying to keep an Alzheimer’s patient on the straight and narrow. Restrictions from the surge in COVID in the area, prevented my wife from seeing her dad through those two months, and this week, he has taken a turn for the worse, and her dad will pass without having seen his oldest daughter in person by his bedside. I don’t normally share personal stuff like this in my column, but wanted people to know that COVID-19 affects families in so many different ways. I’ve often heard people say, “I don’t know anyone who had COVID, so it really doesn’t affect me.”

RIB’S RAMBLINGS Mark Ribble

just don’t know it. Although my father-in-law will pass away from something other than COVID, that virus killed his chance to have his family at his side on his way out of this world. My mother-in-law, who begged the hospital officials to let her in, finally got her wish on Tuesday evening. Now, we have to worry that she was exposed to COVID within the hospital, especially on 6 North, where they had an outbreak just last week. So COVID affects all of us. It’s not a hoax, or a chip-implanting scheme by the New World Order. It’s not a flu bug gone awry, nor are the numbers being exaggerated by the media for ratings hits. If anything, the numbers are skewed in the other directions because they don’t take into effect the number of families who have lost loved ones not from COVID, but because COVID has taken away their connection. And they certainly don’t take into account, the number of people who have ‘recovered’ from COVID, who are faced with years of debilitating effects from the disease. It’s real, folks. Let’s hope that 2021 can outshine 2020 in every way, if we all do our part. Try to have a Happy New Year.

Stop the Spread

COVID-19 can be deadly. Stay home. Stay strong. Save lives.

A COLOURFUL SPRING SIGHT

There was yellow as far as the eye could see on Saturday, May 23 along County Road 50 just east of John R. Park Homestead. The canola fields are in full bloom and just about ready for harvest. Canola is known as the world’s only ‘Made in Canada’ crop, developed in the 1970s at the University of Manitoba. The prairie provinces produce the majority of canola in Canada, but there are producers in southern Ontario as well. This crop is a winter crop, as canola prefers cooler night air to help it thrive.

Recreation Complex set up to test agri-food workers

LEAMINGTON — The newly named Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre is home this week to a COVID-19 Assessment Centre revolving entirely around the agri-food industry. With the death of two young offshore workers last week in Windsor-Essex, a collaborative effort has been made between a number of agencies to get approximately 8,000 farm workers in the region tested.

Windsor-Essex excluded from province’s Stage 2 start-up

ESSEX COUNTY — Windsor-Essex has been excluded from the province’s Stage 2 opening, which will begin on Friday, June 12. Nine other regions of Ontario, including Sarnia-Lambton, have been dealt a similar fate.

Hundreds line streets as peaceful protest makes its way to Kingsville

KINGSVILLE — The main streets of Kingsville were full of peaceful protesters Sunday afternoon as about 300 people stood in unison to support the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. The protest had people lining Main Street and parts of Division near the four corners of town and observed social distancing, while showing their solidarity for the cause.

Town opting out of OPP pact

LEAMINGTON — After 10 years of police service provided by the Ontario Provincial Police, Leamington is looking at other options. At the Leamington council meeting on Tuesday, June 9, council voted to terminate the contract they have with the OPP.

Agri-food testing centre sees low attendance

LEAMINGTON — One week after the COVID testing site opened at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreational Centre in Leamington, the collaborative effort from many medical agencies across the county has counted 704 tests. That’s a far cry from the approximately 8,000

agri-food workers they were hoping to test.

Local mask-making group donates 1000 masks to Erie Shores HealthCare

AMHERSTBURG — The growth of a locally-based Facebook group has now led to a donation to an area hospital, with more donations planned. The group MASKS4ALL Amherstburg/ Windsor-Essex County has completed the first 1,000 masks they have pledged to donate to Erie Shores HealthCare (ESHC) and turned the masks over to ESHC Director of Communications, Arms Bumanlag. Group administrative co-ordinator Krystle Bernauer said they got word that the Leamington hospital needed the masks and the group came together to make the donation happen.

June 27th Miracle a roaring success

WINDSOR-ESSEX — The June 27th Miracle organizers had their eyes on a world record for a one day food drive and while the numbers are still being tabulated, they can easily classify it as a roaring success. Volunteers across Windsor-Essex have filled arena floors to the brim with non-perishables donated by the people of Windsor-Essex. Mike Diab, who is the June 27th Miracle Leamington leader, was quick to speak of the generosity of others. “So many local companies have stepped up to help,” he said. “The generosity of this community is outstanding.”

Businesses take united stand

KINGSVILLE — Kingsville and Leamington business owners, political leaders and residents gathered about 150-strong near the front of the Carnegie bulding in Kingsville on Tuesday, June 30. The group has asked the Premier of Ontario to immediately allow Kingsville and Leamington to graduate to Stage 2 of the plan to re-open, citing revenue loss that will be difficult to overcome. The group has demanded that if they cannot be moved to Stage 2, the province must provide immediate financial relief to each business and the group as a whole.

Leamington, Kingsville ushered into Stage 2

TORONTO — With one short, spoken paragraph, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that Leamington and Kingsville could join the rest of the province in advancing to Stage 2 in the province’s plan to re-open the economy. Small business owners in this area rejoiced simultaneously, clinging to the words of the Premier as he announced that the change would take effect Tuesday at 12:01 am. He also promised to come to Leamington/Kingsville to get a haircut in the very near future.

Pop-up isolation centre ready to go at arena

LEAMINGTON — Windsor-Essex officials are hoping it is not needed, but they have planned a 50-bed isolation unit at the newly named Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre, in the rink formerly known as Heinz Arena. Working through the Ontario Ministry of Health, local volunteers and officials erected the 50 pop-up units on the main arena floor.

LifeWalk raises $45,000

LEAMINGTON — The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, along with the Erie Shores Health Foundation, have announced the results of the annual Hospice LifeWalk event. This year, due to social distancing requirements, the two annual events were held ‘virtually’ for the first time. This year’s Hospice LifeWalk raised more than $45,000 combined for both local hospice campuses (Windsor and Erie Shores).

Kingsville launches Open Streets initiative

KINGSVILLE — Despite Friday’s storms washing out the first night of Kingsville’s Open Streets event, the rest of the opening weekend went very well. The town decided to close portions of Main Street and Division Street in the downtown area to help businesses get off to a roaring start entering Stage 2 of Ontario’s plan to re-open the economy.

Premier keeps haircut promise

LEAMINGTON — Ontario Premier Doug Ford promised weeks ago that he would come to Windsor-Essex to get his first haircut since the COVID-19 pandemic began. On Thursday, July 16, the Premier and his entourage arrived in Leamington for a hair appointment at Mastronardi Barbering on Talbot Street West. Henry Mastronardi, who’s been in business for 56 years, was happy to oblige the Premier and gave him a nice trim. Ford followed up the haircut with a trip to Kingsville, where he stopped at Jack’s Gastro Pub and had a tour of SunBrite Foods in Ruthven, before moving on to Chatham-Kent for a stop at Craven Farms. Dozens of people gathered to get photos with the Premier at the barbershop in Leamington.

Leamington cancels remainder of summer events amid COVID-19

LEAMINGTON — The Municipality of Leamington has decided to cancel all municipal events and summer day camps through Labour Day. The decision comes after the first half of the summer events were cancelled during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the events to be cancelled were Mill Street Markets for August and September, the Summer Concert Series at Sunset Stadium, Sunday Serenades at Rick Atkin Park, and Music at the Marina on Friday nights.

Mayors frustrated by lack of testing

LEAMINGTON/KINGSVILLE — Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald is growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of cooperation from some agrifarms in the area. She was hoping the arrival of Ontario’s Emergency Medical Assistance Team (EMAT) in the area last week would help boost the local effort and so far it has helped. The help she really wants is for the government to mandate testing as a condition of employment in the agri-food sector. Less than one-third of the farms in Windsor-Essex have been tested. MacDonald says that’s not good enough and has asked the province to mandate it.

Ohio boaters pulled from lake

KINGSVVILLE — Two Ohio men are in hospital and another is counting his lucky stars after a harrowing night on Lake Erie on Labour Day weekend. What started out as a cruise from PutIn-Bay to Vermillion, Ohio, ended near the shores of Kingsville. The trio’s boat ran into trouble as the storms came up late Sunday night into Monday morning, and the waves carried the 32-foot pleasure craft all the way to Canadian waters, partially capsizing it in the process. The boaters had no idea they were in Canada.

Kingsville man hits the Hogs for Hospice jackpot

KINGSVILLE — When Gary Lauzon got the call last Friday from the Hogs for Hospice committee, he couldn’t believe he’d just won $120,170 in the first annual Hogs for Hospice 50/50 draw. The fundraiser was underway for the last three weeks and at press time last week, the prize had just climbed to over $50,000. In the final three days, that prize more than doubled.

Pet of the Week PEPPER

8 years old - Hello, my name is Pepper, I’m a timid and reserved lady. I’m also a golden oldie which means my adoption fee is half price! I need some time to get acquainted with strangers as I don’t trust so easily right off the bat so I need someone who is willing to take things slow with me. I like to be pet once I’m comfortable with you and I especially adore having my chin scratched for me. I’m a bit of a lone wolf and tend to keep to myself and I’m fine to entertain myself since I’m not a fan of playing with cat toys. I spend a good amount of my time lounging around and taking naps in my cubby so if you have somewhere cozy and quiet for me to sleep I’ll be happy. Visit windsorhumane.org to apply to adopt me!
