Hogs 50-50 raffle climbs to incredible $587,125 By Mark Ribble Two days before the start of the Hogs for Hospice weekend — July 27 — the Hogs 50-50 jackpot sat at $65,000. While it was expected that the jackpot would grow exponentially over the course of the big weekend, likely nobody involved expected the jackpot to grow to heights never seen before. On the morning of August 4, with about 12 hours to go, the total got over $400,000. When the dust settled on draw day — Friday, August 5 — Jamie Poisson of Windsor had won $587,125, which eclipsed previous amounts by more than $400,000. The build-up to the deadline was a story in itself, as the totals kept climbing as each hour passed. Things got so hectic that the website was down much of the evening on Thursday. Ticket buyers were able to get tickets through the Hogs Facebook page. The Hogs committee will present the cheque to Jamie Poisson next week and the Sun will be there to document that monumental presentation. Stay tuned for more details on the presentation and on the big winner. Of course, Erie Shores Hospice was also a big winner, collecting not only the other half of the 50-50 pot, but the proceeds from the weekend, which are still being tabulated.

WSO wows with wizardly wonder

By Deanna Bertrand It was a very warm sunny evening Saturday, August 6 for approximately 500 concertgoers on the hill at Seacliff Beach and the Leamington Sunset Amphitheatre for the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO) summer concert. The free concert, sponsored by the Municipality of Leamington, was part of the WSO outdoor concert series and featured a full orchestra performing music from the popular Harry Potter series of movies. The WSO is celebrating its 75th season and will be back in Leamington De-

cember 2 to play Handel’s Messiah at Leamington Mennonite Church.

The next free WSO outdoor concert is Saturday, August 13 at Reaume

Park in front of the Peace Fountain in Windsor.

Conductor and Music Director Maestro Robert Franz leads the WSO Saturday evening.

Gleaners fundraiser boosted by jewellery donation By Mark Ribble What began as a generous donation from a world-renowned jeweller has now turned into a reciprocal event benefiting a local worthy charity. Back in July, a fundraising dinner was held by the Erie Shores South Catholic Family of Parish-

es at the Portuguese Club, where a valuable one-ofa-kind pendant was auctioned off. That pendant, made exclusively by Labortas Classic Jewellery House in Ukraine, brought in about $46,000 in bids and donations. Mandi Quiring, who was instrumental in raising over $1 million in donations for Ukraine, made the connection with Lobortas owner and creator Igor Lobortas. His donation of the pendant in July also opened up the line of communication for another upcoming fundraiser for the Southwestern Ontario Gleaners. The annual fundraiser for the Gleaners will take on a new twist this year with Mr. Lobortas do-

nating two pieces to the event. “Once we talked and he found out that Gleaners has been shipping food to Ukraine, he asked how he could help,” said Mandi Quiring. “He wants to give back to such a giving community here.” Joel Epp, General Manager of the Gleaners operation in Leamington, was thrilled to hear that Lobortas wants to help the Gleaners. “We’re happy to partner with Lobortas for this event,” said Epp. “For him to recognize us in this way is wonderful.” Organizers of the event, which will be held August 27 at the Portuguese Club, have heard that Mr. Lobortas himself may try to make an appearance at the fundraiser. “He was so impressed by what we’ve done here for Ukraine that he may try to make the trip,” said Mandi Quiring. The fundraiser will feature a dinner, live entertainment and a live and silent auction, with all proceeds going to Gleaners. Southwestern Ontario Gleaners founder Tina

Quiring says she’s equally thrilled that the famous jeweller has taken such an interest in their fundraiser. “This is fantastic that he is so involved,” she said. “We’re looking forward

Lions Club holding community go-kart race day on August 27

By Mark Ribble Leamington Lions Club spokesman Bruce Medcalf is hoping that the business community will take up the challenge on August 27 and in turn, help the local Salvation Army. The Lions Club of Leamington, in partnership with Point Pelee Karting and the Salvation Army, is hosting the first — and hopefully annual — Lions Club Race Day at the popular local go-kart track. “There will be a corporate challenge element to it,” says Medcalf. “We hope businesses will send a representative to race on their behalf.” Businesses can challenge each other to a race,

with the winners getting to hold on to bragging rights until next year. “We’re hoping to get the greenhouses to challenge each other and maybe even the restaurants,” added Medcalf. Jason Papp, owner of Point Pelee Karting, says the day will be family-oriented, with lots to do for kids. “We will have discounted kart rentals so the kids can come and enjoy themselves,” he said. “Coming out of COVID, we want families to get out and have some fun.” Major Ron Wickens of the Salvation Army Leamington Corps says that he’s looking forward to a

great day at the track. “What a great way to get out and do something fun,” he said. “And all for a good cause.” The proceeds raised will be turned over to the Salvation Army by the Lions Club and Medcalf hopes they can use this year’s event as a building block to something much larger in the future. “I’d love to see a full slate of challenge races between the businesses,” he said. “That friendly fun competition creates great feelings in the community.” The event will happen on Sunday, August 27 at the track located at 538 Bevel Line Road. If interested in being part of the business challenge, cost is $100 per racer and you’ll be using the Point Pelee Karting go-karts to take on other business people in the community. There will be lots for the kids to do, including miniature races for various ages and driving skills, as well as food vendors and possibly a classic car show. For more information, contact Bruce Medcalf at 519-329-0434 or email at TheDreamAvenger@ gmail.com.

Torrential rains wreak havoc on local basements

By Mark Ribble A two-hour storm that descended on the Sun Parlour in the early morning hours of Friday, August 5 brought as much as five inches of rain to the region. Farmers initially re-

joiced at the rainfall but it quickly turned into concern as residents woke up to flooded basements throughout the region. Leamington’s Director of Infrastructure Services, Rob Sharon, told the Sun that an unusually large

amount of rainfall in a two-hour period between 3:30 am and 5:30 am made it almost impossible for the town sewer systems to keep up. “It was above the 1-in100-year level for the duration of time that it was here,” he said. “We had readings between three and five inches on the southeast side of the municipality.” Sharon said that the more western sections of Leamington were not hit as hard with the rain, which closed the Leamington Library for several days due to flooding. Some rain gauges shown on social media were well over six inches from the torrential downpour. The rain gauge at the Pollution Centre Hodgins Street resident Donna Massong’s freezer was upend- Control ed by the rising water levels from Friday’s storm. Photo submitted measured about

three inches in that twohour span. For Donna Massong, who lives on Hodgins Street, the rainfall caused her basement to take on a lot of water. “The water was so deep that my freezer was partially turned over,” she says. Massong says this is the second flooding of her basement since 2019. “It’s frustrating,” she added. “Insurance won’t cover it because it flooded in 2019.” She was still making a list and tabulating the damage on Tuesday. The municipality received notification of 26 locations that had flooding, predominantly in basements. “There was also some ground floor flooding in the uptown area,” said Sharon. “If a homeowner has not yet called us, we encourage them to do so, as it helps us understand where in town the sewer system was overcome.”

The Bank Theatre had flooding in their lower level green room area and volunteers spent several hours mopping up the mess. Sharon says that sewer systems can only convey water at a rate that is appropriate to the size and design of the sewer system and when significant rain falls in a short period of time, it can overwhelm the system quickly. Sharon says there are things that homeowners can do to help mitigate any flooding possibilities, as these rare storms seem to be occurring more often. “While I am not suggesting that these measures would have prevented flooding in all locations during this storm event, as a matter of best practice, the municipality encourages all homeowners to practice

these three steps,” he said. 1 — Disconnect eavestrough downspouts from the storm sewer system, and allow that water to instead drain onto their yard. The ground then absorbs some of the runoff before it enters the sewer. 2 — Ensure that check valves/backflow preventers are installed, and ensure they are maintained and inspected regularly. Without regular maintenance, the backflow preventer may not function as intended during a storm event 3 — Ensure sump pumps are maintained regularly and include a back-up power supply. Back up power could include battery, or water powered back-up. Water powered uses the pressure in the municipal water system to power the pump.

Wheatley family grateful n for ESHC quick actions

us

By Mark Ribble

Little Luca Jraige of Wheatley will turn three in October, but it was the actions of professionals at Erie Shores HealthCare who helped make sure Luca would be here for that birthday. Last October 7, two-year-old Luca somehow made it into the family’s indoor pool at their newly built Wheatley home. Doctors later estimated that Luca had been in the water for about eight minutes when he was found. His father Joey performed CPR as the family anxiously and frantically awaited the arrival of emergency responders. Wheatley firefighters arrived quickly along with Chatham-Kent Police and EMS, who made the determination to take young Luca to Erie Shores HealthCare in Leamington. He was quickly assessed in Leamington and prepared for a quick transfer to London as his parents Joey and Mona looked on. Once Luca was stabilized by the folks in Leamington, an ambulance arrived for the two-hour transfer to London. “I was so pleased with how they handled it,” said Joey last week. “If not for the grace of God and the quick action in Leamington, my boy wouldn’t have made it.” Joey sees Luca’s survival as nothing short of a miracle and credits his faith in guiding them though the tough times. He says that Erie Shores HealthCare sent a nurse, a doctor and a respirologist in the ambulance for the

ride and it’s a good thing they did, because Luca suffered a seizure while on route. “I believe those people were put in that ambulance for a reason,” he said. After a month-and-a-half in London, Luca was released to begin home care, which has been a very long road to recovery. His drowning injury is considered a traumatic brain injury. “He’s still recovering and has a long road ahead,” said Joey. “I’m grateful to God — first and foremost — but also to Erie Shores HealthCare for their decisive actions on that day.” Today, Luca is approaching his third birthday, but has yet to return to the typical two-year-old he was before the accident. His dad is hopeful that will eventually happen. “We’re grateful to have that second chance,” he says. Joey is fortunate to be self-employed, so he can make sure Luca gets to his appointments and treatments. They’ve begun vision therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and chiropractic care and Luca is showing definite improvement. “He’s laughing and smiling and saying a few words,” said Joey. “We’re seeing improvement in a lot of areas.” As for the doctors, nurses and professionals who had a hand in Luca’s rescue and treatment, the family will be forever indebted and even with the amount of work there is to be done, are grateful for the chance to do it. Joey and his family have decided to give back to Erie

and other musings

Remembering those stars who left us too soon I remember when I was a kid and a celebrity death would come across the airwaves, with the earliest deaths I can remember hearing about being Jayne Mansfield, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King and after that, Judy Garland and Sharon Tate. I heard lots about the JFK assassination but I was only two in 1963, so I have no recollection of that infamous day. Same goes for the Buddy Holly plane crash, which happened before I was born. The early 1970s brought the trifecta of celebrity deaths with Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison in close proximity of each other. These deaths all gave me pause at different points in my life and I can say that Elvis Presley’s death in 1977 was also a shocker. Later in life, the three Johns: John Belushi, John Lennon and later John Candy, all hit me hard. Chris Farley also took me back, then Robin Williams really sent me reeling. Monday’s passing of Olivia

Newton John brought me right back to those early ‘70s country tunes that she had hits with and I felt nostalgic in an instant. Deb and I had a conversation about all of the stars who left us too soon and how each one of them impacted our lives. Me being a musical person, my early influences were of course the Beatles, Elvis and Buddy Holly. If you count John Lennon’s assassination at the age of 40, coupled with Elvis at 42 and Buddy Holly at 22, that’s a lot of musical history packed into a relatively short time. It makes you wonder about all the great music we missed from these three alone. I remember riding in the back seat of someone’s car with my mother on the way to an out-oftown baseball game when news of Judy Garland’s death came over the radio. My mom was not a Judy Garland fan and couldn’t have cared less. Me on the other hand, I was the biggest Wizard of Oz fan on the planet — at least in my own mind.

I could only picture her just as I knew her from 1938 when she starred in the Wizard of Oz. I didn’t imagine she was 47 years old on that day in 1969. Being eight years old, I just remember mourning that pretty girl in the gingham dress who had been transported to a suddenly colourful magical land. The morning after John Lennon’s death, I was just preparing to open the front doors at Sunshine Market Gardens which later became Leamington IGA. Someone in the office — probably Pat Hickson — turned on the radio which she did every business morning before we opened the doors to shoppers. I remember going about my business getting floor mats straightened out at the front door before unlocking it for customers to come through. I recall hearing John’s name come over the radio but didn’t pay attention to what they were saying. Soon it was apparent that the radio folks were announcing John’s death and I felt like I’d

lost a brother. Some say it’s not healthy to mourn the death of a celebrity — someone you never knew personally. I’d never met John, so who am I to mourn this public figure, but I felt it just the same. As a life-long Beatles fan, I had rather enjoyed John’s brand new Double Fantasy album and the new single, Starting Over. Little did I know that the rest of the hit songs from that album would achieve their status posthumously. Nowadays celebrity deaths seem to happen on a regular basis. Debbie and I have talked about what John Candy or Chris Farley would be doing if they’d lived. Same with John Ritter and of course the great Robin Williams. Throw in Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse and the list keeps on going.

RIB’S RAMBLINGS Mark Ribble

Tomato red Olds 442 in Leamington When Catherine (my better half) went to see Henry Guenther at Aace Home Improvements about a new sunroom, she saw his classic car parked in front of his shop. “Oh, Henry,” she said. “You must send pictures of your car to Bill.” Right away, Henry emailed several photos of his car to me, and what a car! I have always been fond of the Olds 442 ever since my older brother

John owned one in Toronto many years ago. Henry also emailed the scoop on his: “I am the fourth owner. The last owner had it for 20 years. He never drove it in the snow or rain. Original colour was gold and now red with black stripes. “It was built in Oshawa and the first owner bought it in Halifax. The 400 engine was later switched for a 350 Rocket four-barrel engine. It has

a four-speed automatic transmission.” If Ransom Eli Olds could come back to life to see Henry’s car, wouldn’t he be thrilled! The first car in Leamington was a Curved Dash Oldsmobile of around 1901 vintage, so Henry’s Olds 442 fits right in. That first Olds had the engine under the floor and a tiller for a steering wheel. The three numbers on Henry’s 442 are among

the most famous numbers in automotive history. They tell us the car has a four-barrel carb, four on the floor, and dual exhausts. A great combo! Always looking for stories. Email billtsherk@ sympatico.ca.

So many left us in the prime of their careers and now Olivia Newton John, whom I felt would live forever, is gone too. Her turn as Sandy in Grease solidified her celebrity status and she used that to cross over from a young Australian country starlet to a bonafide pop star. It’s a long list of entertainers who’ve left us and I feel fortunate enough to be long enough in the tooth to say I remember seeing Moe Howard’s final appearance on the Mike Douglas show 1973 and Charlie Chaplin live on the 1972 Oscars telecast where he received a 12-minute standing ovation. I guess there are some benefits to being old after all. Now if I can just figure them out.

Bobby Vinton’s career was a parade of hits FLASHBACK As I was driving out of Seacliff Park last Sunday afternoon, I turned on our Sirius XM ’70s channel and a song came on that I can’t recall hearing for so many years by a singer who — after topping the charts in the early to mid-sixties and again in the later sixties — would become known as the “Polish Prince”. Yes, that would be Bobby Vinton with his last top 10 hit single “My Melody of Love”. With a total of 43 songs hitting the Billboard’s Hot 100 from 1962 until 1980, that song – with a mixture of English and Polish lyrics – reached #3 in the fall of 1974 but, more impor-

tantly, was also Vinton’s longest running hit song on the Billboard charts lasting 17 weeks. His very first single released, “Roses Are Red (My Love)”, in 1962, was #1 for four weeks, while six singles later, in mid1963, “Blue on Blue” went to #3 and its follow up, “Blue Velvet”, reached the top spot for three weeks. Bobby’s next release, “There! I’ve Said It Again”, topped the charts for four weeks in January of 1964, only to be bumped out at the end of the month by some new group from England called the Beatles and their first hit record,

“I Want to Hold Your Hand”. Little did all the American artists know that things were about to dramatically change in the coming months and years. However, Vinton did get back to the top of charts at the end of 1964 for a week with his selfpenned hit, “Mr. Lonely”, a song he wrote in the late 1950s while he was in the Army and feeling very lonely. When he originally brought it to his record company’s attention in 1962, Epic turned him down and gave it to Buddy Greco who bombed with it, reaching only #64

My Dad... A father’s touch, a Daddy’s kiss, A grieving Daughter, the Dad I will always miss. An empty house, an empty chair, A father’s love, no longer there. A broken heart, a tear filled eye, Another soul in the sky. The times we shared, the laughs we had. Things I miss when I think of My Dad.

Together Forever!

Your hands were strong yet gentle as you held us in your care, you taught us by example every day, No matter what we needed, you were always there, without a doubt we knew you’d show the way. We meant the world and all to you and you to us, which is why it’s just so hard to say goodbye, Your leaving left an emptiness deep inside our hearts, and some days it seems our tears will never dry. For though you gave us everything you ever had to give, and taught us almost everything we’d ever need to know, It simply seemed somehow you always would be there, for we simply never learned how to let you go. Deeply missed by your family... Always

Wheatley Library hours extended, work continues on relief well

In response to public requests, library services in Wheatley are being extended into the evening, effective this week. The temporary library service at 108 Talbot Trail will now be open each Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. in addition to its

regular hours of Tuesday from 2 to 6 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chief Librarian Tania Sharpe said it is the goal of the library to be as responsive as possible to community needs.

“Anything we can do to help the community take another step forward is positive,” she said. For more information contact the library at 519-401-7371 or visit the Chatham-Kent Library website at chatham-kent.

ca/library In operational news, it is expected that the installation of a conductor pipe at the APEC 1 site in Wheatley should be completed by the end of the work. The process involves hammering the pipe into

the ground to a depth of approximately 100 feet. The pipe is currently one-third of the desired depth. Installation of the conductor pipe is the first step toward completing a redundant pressure relief well in the munic-

ipal parking lot near the APEC 1 site. When the next phase of the work resumes, an odour of gas may be detected. If residents at any time detect the smell of gas, they are asked to immediately call 9-1-1.

Former West Kent councillor passes

Former long-time Chatham-Kent Ward 1 councillor Bryon Fluker passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Riverview Gardens in Chatham. First elected to Tilbury Town Council in 1972, Mr. Fluker later spent eight years as mayor of that community. He was elected to the inaugural Chatham-Kent Council in 1998 and served West Kent (Ward 1) until 2018. West Kent is comprised of Wheatley, Tilbury, Merlin and the surrounding areas. Mayor Darrin Canniff and Chatham-Kent Council colleagues had high praise for the former council member. “When you speak

about political leaders in Tilbury, Bryon’s name is front and centre,” said Mayor Canniff. “His years of service and dedication to his community are unmatched.” “Bryon had the unique ability to make even a boring meeting entertaining,” said Joe Faas, a former Mayor of Dresden and Chatham-Kent councillor since 2003. “We had a shared background in that we were both mayors before amalgamation. We didn’t agree on every issue, but there was respect for each other when we differed.” Councillor Doug Sulman, who served two decades with Fluker, described him as “just a bundle of energy. He

would dash into a room; “My condolences to his his comments were laced family.” Mr. Fluker is survived with humour, but you knew that he’d done by his wife Nellie, and his homework. He was daughters Jodi and Kari well-respected by fellow and their families. His councillors and obviously obituary can be found at by his community con- reaumefh.com. sidering his length of service.” “He was a great mentor to me, and the Tilbury area owes him a debt of gratitude,” said current West Kent Councillor Mark Authier, who served with Fluker in his last term. Mayor’s seat to remain vacant The mayor’s seat in Kingsville will remain vacant as the current council looks toward the October municipal election to fill the vacancy. At their August 8 meeting, the seat of former Mayor Nelson Santos was declared vacant and council had a couple of options on how to move forward. Administration recommended that the office remain empty and that Deputy Mayor Gord Queen chair the remaining council meetings and perform other duties normally falling on the mayor until the new council is elected on October 24. Administration also recommended that all vacancies on boards and commit-

Photos from Kingsville-Gosfield Heritage Society 1790-2000 A Stroll Through Time

Cedar Beach Drug Store, owned by Red Morris, Photo courtesy of the Kingsville Archives offered drugs, toiletries, china and souvenirs for sale as well as providing a luncheon menu. Speed boat rides were available from the Cedar Beach Drug Store for 50 cents a ride for summer visitors renting a cabin or for cottagers not owning a boat. The boats could be taken through the placid canal or out into the rougher waters of Lake Erie. This photograph of an unidentified family, standing outside the Cedar Beach Drug Store, was taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

This rare photograph of the aftermath of the devastating May 18, 1883 fire that leveled most of Leamington’s core area depicts the damage as seen from a spot somewhere around the northern side of Talbot Street – probably opposite the end of today’s Princess Street. One can clearly see the Deming Tavern at the left (future site of the Bank of Montreal and today’s Bank Theatre) and the Busy Big Store (southwest corner of Erie and Talbot) to the right. Photo from the C. Scott Holland collection

Examining the great Leamington fire of May, 1883

By C. Scott Holland Many towns and villages suffered devastating fires that leveled entire sections of the early prosperous towns and villages. Leamington is no exception and it did rebound from the devastating May 18, 1883 fire that razed all but a few downtown buildings. The blaze was fueled by strong winds, and while the local fire department responded quickly, they encountered several problems that hampered their efforts. One was the wind, which made it hard to control the flames, and secondly, several hoses had restricted water flow due to knots and kinks in them which had to be untangled. The majority of Leamington’s 25 plus businesses were wooden frame buildings. Sparks carried by the winds ignited other buildings, and by daybreak all but a few downtown buildings had been razed. The fire started around 1 a.m. in a rear shed behind Mrs. Vanzandt’s millinery shop on the south side of Talbot St. East. She managed to move her goods to a nearby shop, but as fate would have it, that shop would eventually be engulfed

by flames. Initially the fire traveled eastward and struck a harness shop. Soon it expanded to a westerly direction as sparks flew everywhere. By 4 a.m. the bulk of the fire was under control, but by that time not much was left standing in the downtown area. Total loss was estimated as $150,000 and insurance covered $50,000 of that – most businesses had no insurance coverage at all. The next day, an inspection of the damage showed the devastation inflicted upon the core. One of the few intact buildings left was the Deming House (a tavern) which today is the site of the former Bank of Montreal and today’s Bank Theatre. The building on the right was Lewis Wigle’s general store (originally called the Busy Big Store, now the Pita Place on the southwest corner of the main intersection). It was Lewis Wigle, MP Essex South and local businessman, who helped the town recover from the heavy losses. He lured workers and supplies from Windsor to help rebuild the town. It took a few years for full recovery.

Notice of Complete Application and Public Meeting Official Plan Amendment File Number OPA-02 (Erie Sand & Gravel) (Municipality of Leamington)

Take Notice that the Council of the Corporation of the County of Essex will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, September 7th at 5:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers, located at 360 Fairview Avenue West, Essex, to consider a proposed Official Plan Amendment under the provisions of Sections 17 & 22 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990. The Purpose of the public meeting is to consider an Official Plan Amendment affecting a total of 54 ha of land immediately south of the Erie Sand & Gravel, Mainyard/Woolatt Pit located at 260 County Road 31, identified as “expanded Mineral Aggregate Resources Overlay” and as shown on the Key Map (below). The County has received an Official Plan Amendment Application which seeks to expand the Mineral Aggregate Resources Overlay lands on Schedule E1 of the County of Essex Official Plan. As a result of consideration of an expansion to the Mainyard/Woolatt Pit and a new proposed MOS Pit, it was identified that the Mineral Aggregate Resources Overlay in the County Official Plan did not coincide with the mineral aggregate resources mapping from the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry used for approvals under the Aggregate Resources Act. The owners propose to expand the Mainyard/Woolatt Pit to the adjacent acquired lands with the proposed new sand pit being referred to as the proposed MOS Pit. A license for the expanded area is currently being pursued from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry who oversee the licensing process in accordance with the Aggregate Resources Act. The proposed new MOS Pit will have a combined land area of approximately 7.3 ha. The Municipality of Leamington adopted OPA 13 through Bylaw 21-22 on April 26, 2022 which amended Schedule “B” to extend the Resource Overlay in the Leamington Official Plan (2008) which amends mapping only. This amendment will come into effect following the approval of the related Official Plan Amendment by the County of Essex. Any Person seeking to attend the Public Meeting in person should follow all public health guidance to ensure the safety of themselves and others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Any Person who wishes to attend and address County Council by electronic means, must register with the Clerk’s Office no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 1st, 2022. To register for electronic participation, please email clerks@countyofessex.ca. Once you register, you will be given information on how to make your submission at the meeting. To participate electronically, you will need access to a computer or tablet with internet service or a telephone. Any Person may attend the public meeting and/or make written or verbal representation in support of or in opposition to the proposed Official Plan Amendment. Those who wish to address Council respecting this matter are requested to notify the Clerk’s Office prior to the date of the meeting as noted above. Any Person who wishes to watch the meeting proceedings only, please visit https://video.isilive.ca/ countyofessex/live.html. Written submissions regarding the proposed Official Plan Amendment can be made to Rebecca Belanger, MCIP, RPP, Manager, Planning Services, County of Essex, 360 Fairview Avenue West, Essex, Ontario, N8M 1Y6, telephone 519-776-6441, ext. 1325 or email (please include your mailing address) rbelanger@countyofessex.ca. If you wish to be notified of County Council’s decision regarding the proposed Official Plan Amendment, you must make a written request to Rebecca Belanger, MCIP, RPP, Manager, Planning Services, at the address shown above and such request must include the name and address to which such notice should be sent.

Closest to pins on the par threes were Kyle Humpreys #3 and #5, Todd Hodgson #13, and Scott Wilkinson #16. Long drives were Jake Schekenberger #15 and

Frank Schmit #7. The putting contest this year was won by Conner Bergen. He won four rounds with cart donated by Erie Shores. The Alumni Group will use the proceeds from this event to help first-year hockey players any age in the Southpoint Minor Hockey system to offset the cost of their registration. The Alumni will once again be supporting the firstyear referees to help offset their cost of starting up. They will also be helping the system with clinics for the house league this coming season. In the past 11 years, the Alumni Group has raised more than $115,000 for minor hockey. “The course was in perfect shape, thanks to Mike Toth and his crew for the great conditions,” said organizer Ward Hutchins.

By Deanna Bertrand Avid — with driver/trainer Ondrej Gois — became the first horse to cross the finish line on Sunday, Aug. 7 in the first race of the season for the Lakeshore Horse Racing Association at Leamington Raceway. Ten races rounded out the card for the day and results can be found on the racing association website at http://www.lakeshorehorseraceway.com The upcoming season will include many special events, according to its website, including playing host to The Voice of Roger Huston, a Hall of Fame announcer who will be on hand in Leamington on Sept. 11. The OLG Women’s Driving Championship is returning with a Leamington date of Sept. 25. The track will also host Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society Day on Aug. 14, along with Derby Hat Day on Aug. 21 and a kids day Sept. 4. Avid leads the way to the finish line in the first race of the 2022 harness racing season at Leamington Raceway on Sunday, August 7, narrowly beating locally trained Spare Time Serge at the wire. The betting favourite in the ninth race at Leamington Raceway on Sunday did exactly what he was supposed to do as he cruised to a four-length victory and set a new track record as well. Life Is Better — owned by Ken Mathieson and Henry Banakiewicz — took his eighth victory of the season, this time in 1:55:4, a new track record

for aging stallions. Scott Wray was in the bike for the record-setting win. The previous record, held by Sandburg Hanover, was 1:56:4, set on September 7, 2015. Ten races went off in Leamington on Sunday afternoon with a total betting handle of $46,081, according to Standardbred Canada.

Talbot Trail senior golfers have challenging day on course

By Bob McLean August 2 seemed to be an ideal, beautiful summer day for golf for Talbot Trail’s 58 seniors league players. However, many of the players did not score as well as might be expected. There were three nifty 50 results: Ross Mackintosh, Walter Balsam and Angelo Gabriele. Gerry Van Deven hit a marvelous shot on #9 to within 10 feet to win the CP on #9. The long putt victor was Chopper who smiled as he said, “I drained a

36-foot putt on #2.” In the 50-69y division, Joe Drummond continued his excellent play by shooting a 40. A terrific 42 was achieved by Gary Marentette. Nasher and Gerry followed up with their superb 43s. Fuzzy came in with a praiseworthy 45. Ed Fraser earned his second 48 for the season. In the 70-79y grouping, Pearcie fired the lowest score of the day by shooting a terrific 39. BW and Schmidty merited brilliant 41s. Noteworthy 43s were earned by Doug Langlois, Dutchy, Chop-

per and Rick Thompson. Al Matthews played well shooting a solid 45. In the 80-85y division, Joe Vrtel led the way with his impressive 45. Ron McCracken and Chuck McKenzie followed with excellent 46s. Other notable results of 50 or less were Neil Adamson 47, Tarciscio 48, Eugene Abbruzzese and Gary Wilson 49s, and Walter Balsam 50. The enthusiastic Super Seniors played inspiring golf off the silver tees. Very praiseworthy results were earned by Tom Hyatt 48, Bob Freure 49 and

Bill Edwards 53. Gerry Becigneul led the SS gold tee players with a masterful 42. Other impressive results were Dave la Bonte 47, Carl Robinson 49 and Murray Cascadden 55. We extend our sympathies to Bill Hutchinson on the recent passing of his wife. Bill continued playing in our league in to his 90s. He inspired us by always walking the course! Continue to have fun as you are swinging at the white sphere!

Our community is known as the Greenhouse Capital of North America, with a higher concentration of crops under glass than anywhere else on the continent. There are many important roles needed to bring nutritious vegetables from farm to fork, and Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers employ nearly 20,000 people across Ontario, many of whom live right here in our community. Greenhouse farms require a wide range of expertise, to grow, package, sell and ship produce all across Ontario and beyond.

CROP PROTECTION TECHNICIANS Crop protection technicians carefully monitor the plants to ensure that any issues are detected early and can be mitigated before affecting the crop further.

GROWING TEAM The growing team plants, monitors, and harvests the tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers throughout the season. They also coordinate with the sales and marketing teams to ensure that enough fresh produce is available to meet the demand of stores and restaurants while eliminating as much food waste as possible.

PACK LINE Once the vegetables are harvested, they move to pack lines where they are packaged and prepared for shipping.

PRODUCTION MANAGERS Production managers ensure that everyone on the farm is working together and that deadlines will be met. They ensure that the vegetables are ready when needed and they arrive to consumers as fresh as possible.

Wednesday, August 10, 2022

A lot of work goes into getting fresh produce where it needs to be so that customers always have access to fresh Ontario produce yearround. There are so many hands and skills needed to make this a reality daily, every day of the year. Our community is proud of the work that our farmers and their teams do to make Canada’s food system strong, sustainable, and resilient.

LOGISTICS TEAM The logistics team ensures that all the veggies make it to their destination quickly and efficiently.
